At first glance the Trek 720 is a bike that very much wears its heart on its sleeve – well, if by ‘sleeve’ you mean fork legs, since that’s where you’ll find the two custom neon-yellow dry bags and the giant plastic water bottle cages they sit in.

Ample, well-thought out luggage room

That may fly in the face of the current fashion for putting weight up high in extended saddle packs, bar rolls and frame bags. But while that may keep your stuff dry through three-foot deep rivers, it’s less ideal from a handling point of view. By contrast, ensuring luggage weight is kept as low as possible, and in line with the front fork means the Trek handles well whether it’s loaded with bags or not.

And while they don’t look much at first, you’d be amazed at how much stuff you can cram into them – certainly enough to cover you for a weekend away with a roof booked over your head, or even lightweight bivvying if you just stick to the essentials. The only thing to watch is that you tighten the straps securely – especially if you’re riding light – as otherwise the bags can jump out of their clips and drag on the floor.

There’s a lot more to the 720 than its lurid luggage carriers, though. In fact, you can side-step this part of the Trek’s anatomy altogether, since unlike a conventional fixed rack, the bag mounts unclip instantly to leave you with a sub-10kg disc-braked road bike.

And a decent-quality one, too: the excellent frameset includes a fork with tapered triangular blades that sync neatly into a big rounded belly, and a flat-backed down tube complete with over-and-under bottle cage mounts.

It ends with subtly arched skinny-as-steel seatstays side-blended into the top tube in a way that looks similar to the pivoting IsoSpeed decoupler of Trek’s Domane endurance bike.

Narrow rubber doesn't do the 720 justice

That rear end and the extension afforded by the slim seatpost definitely help take some of the bumps and bruises out of rougher roads and tracks, and the broad Bontrager bar has shock-absorbing inserts under the tape to further reduce vibration and fatigue.

Unfortunately, that doesn’t shine through as clearly as it should because of the Bontrager AW1 tyres Trek has gone with. While they’re listed at 28mm, the specimens on our test bike only measured 26mm wide even on the broad, tubeless-ready rims.

Yes, that helps to keep the weight down, but means even average road surfaces felt rough compared with fatter-treaded competitors we were riding alongside the 720. Off-piste pleasure is even more limited, as the firm, thin rubber rattles and ricochets around, costing you significant speed in the process.

There’s room in the shaped stays for much wider, and a swap to 35mm transformed the Trek into a far more fun and forgiving ride. And apart from initial acceleration – which is already adequate rather than amazing due to the soft frame – it came at no obvious loss of road speed, and definitely improved rough-surface momentum and control.

As a result, we’d definitely advise bartering for a tyre swap before you buy – although given that full Shimano 105 transmission, powerful TRP hybrid disc brakes and bags are already included, the 720 still represents decent value even if you have to upsize the rubber yourself.

1990's TREK Multi Track shifters

Looking for a little help on this one. I have a 1990's vintage TREK 720 Multi Track with regular handlebars that I would like to switch out to drop handlebars with STI shifters. The current setup is: SRAM Grip Shift SRT3001-32 shifters. Rear Derailleur is a Shimano Alivio with a 7 cog cassette. There is a triple on the front. The bike has cantilever brakes. My questions is: Will the SORA, Tiagra or some lower end Shimano STI shifter work with the current two derailleurs or would I need to replace them too? Thanks!  

Money Pit I've already done this. Any Shimano shifter should work, providing that it is 7 speed. I upgraded another bike and took all the parts and put them on a '96 Trek 720. Went from low end MTB parts to a 105/Ultegra/XTR blend with a whopping 27 speeds! Drop bars give it a completely different feel. I assume you are also going to change your stem? Of course to change to 9 or ten speeds you also have to include a wheelset. Then there is money to buy this, money for that and it just won't stop. Did I mention the stem? Anyway, at the end of the day, I wish I'd just left well enough alone and still had my complete 720 the way it was. Don't upgrade - just ride.  

Leave the set up the way it is, just a money pit. My girl (girl's frame of course) has this same vintage bike. This bike is set up for a more "upright" style of riding and drop bars and STI won't work well for this geometry. If you have the micro-drive front crank set (I'm assuming you do) the front derailleur will not work properly with the STI lever. My girl's bike came with all the same componants that you have and flat handle bars. I swapped out the bars for "down hill" style handle bars with "clip ons", big differance for her and better hand positioning. You can still buy a lot of replacement parts for this bike if you decide to keep it as is. I have a complete replacement set of parts for this bike that I purchased off the internet. I recently saw a brand new Schwinn Hybrid that had a 7 speed cluster out back with Grip Shift. As Bosax mentioned, you will have to buy another wheel set if you upgrade to 8/9/10 speed gearing. This is a pretty good bike overall, I would clean her up and ride her as is. If you must change the gearing on her what about going with a "Dove" style bar or Mary One Ones with bar end shifters? The left bar end shifter is not indexed so it would work with your current front derailleur.  

Modified 720. I set this 720 up for my wife some years ago. Replaced the grip-shifts with Shimano under-the-bar thumb shifters. Some Rivendell stuff, some stuff from the garage parts box, one of the first ever Blackburn racks, and a 1975 Brooks B-15. Saddle is at my height—I use the bike to run errands. Trouble-free and comfortable. Definitely a keeper.  

keeping things as they are . . . . . . Thanks to bosax, thommy, and wim for your replies. The more I thought about this, and the expense, the more I decided to keep things the same. I have 5 other bikes in the stable that all have drops, STI, etc. etc. After giving the 720 a overhaul, I took it out for a spin and actually liked the feel of the bike the way it is. This book explores in rich, ethnographic detail life in a former 'monotown' in Kaluga oblast just a few hours drive from Moscow. The author uses the rich empirical material to argue that more than twenty years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, far from being a rapidly disappearing remnant of Soviet modernity, such 'monotowns' are sites of vibrant and complex social and economic relations, which are not solely embedded in Soviet, blue-collar, worker identities. Instead, the book explores the ways in which new forms of socio-economic relations have emerged in dialogue with the past, through which blue-collar 'workers' have come to revalorise and consequently 'make habitable' these so-called relics of the Soviet era. The book offers and alternative view of spaces, which although almost entirely absent from broader political narratives on the current and future direction of the Russian Federation and its role in the global economy, actually represent a very important part of life for millions of people in contemporary Russia.

Abstract Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, many Russian and Ukrainian households have experienced periods of economic marginalization. The role of this paper is to examine these social costs of transition, noting that official reporting underestimates the true scale of the problem, and the household responses to these costs. The discussions are based on both qualitative and quantitative research undertaken in numerous locations in Russia and Ukraine.

A small but rapidly growing body of scholars of contemporary economic development in both Eastern and Central Europe and beyond have begun to question the narrative of impending capitalist hegemony. The aim of this article is to contribute to this emergent stream of thought by first developing a conceptual framework to map the incursion of capitalism and persistence of multiple economic practises in any economy and second, applying this to understanding the everyday economy of post-Soviet Moscow.

This paper presents an analytical description of working-class identity in three key periods of the socioeconomic transformations which changed the structure of a plant’s industry and working-class life: the Soviet era (1930s-1980s), the time of economical change (1990s), and the post-Soviet years (2000s-2010s). The analytical framework of the study is based on the concept of ‘cultural class analysis’ (Savage 2015). It includes the concepts of habitus and cultural capital, and culture as embedded in economic and social relations (Bourdieu 1980). In the course of the research we conducted an ethnographic case-study in 2017 and lived in the neighborhood of Uralmash, which was designed for workers of a heavy machinery plant dating back to the 1920s in the city of Yekaterinburg. Based on 15 in-depth interviews with Uralmash workers living in the neighborhood and 8 experts, and our field observations, we discovered 3 restructuring shapes of the Uralmash worker identity. These working class identities shapes referred to 3 determined periods. The Soviet period showed a ‘consistent’ working-class identity of the Uralmash workers, whereby the plant and working spirits were the centers of their lives. The 1990s was marked by severe deterioration of workers’ social conditions and the loss of their familiar bearings in life. As a consequence, the Uralmash workers perceived themselves as ‘victims of circumstances’ with ‘collapsing’ worker identity in 1990s. Currently, ‘Soviet’ and ‘post-Soviet’ practices and values are combined in today’s ‘mixing’ and an inconsistent worker identity. The notions of ‘simple’ and ‘working-class’ as sense-making images are encapsulated in nostalgic memories and retain their role as criteria for the delineation between inequalities and social discrimination along the ‘them’ and ‘us’: ‘we are those who live belonging to the past’. The Soviet past still continues to be an important sense-making resource; in fact, it is the only ‘universal’ prop for them that support their subjective perception of themselves. Keywords: industr

Abstract. This article evaluates critically the meta-narrative that capitalism is becoming totalizing and hegemonic. Recently, an emerging corpus of postdevelopment thought has begun to deconstruct this discourse, but only in relation to Western economies and the majority (third) world. To further contribute to this emerging critique, the aim is to analyze the degree to which capitalist economic practices have permeated postsocialist societies through a case study of Moscow. Based on face-to-face interviews with 313 households during 2005/06 concerning their work practices, a relatively shallow penetration of capitalism in this city is identified, with only a minority of households relying on the capitalist economy in particular, and the formal economy more generally, to secure their livelihood. The vast majority of the population is found to depend heavily on an array of noncapitalist economic practices; and capitalist and noncapitalist practices are identified as operating in tandem with, rather than in opposition to, each other. The outcome is a call to refute the universality of capitalist hegemony and to rethink the nature of economic development from a perspective that recognizes the persistence of economic pluralism.

Starting from the distinction between short-term system transition (new institutional economics, political science) and system transformation as a long-term process of societal change, the author argues that institution-building is a long-term and complicated process and that informal institutions of everyday life do not change as quickly as the newly implemented formal ones. The author has a particular interest in the people’s economy of everyday life. He takes a look at three empirical research projects he conducted between 1997 and 2016, investigating whether informal institutions still undermine formal ones that are necessary for the functioning of a market economy. It will always be a 720, which is probably worth $50 to maybe $90 in fully functional condition, decent tires and all.
