History and Iconic Models

Trek started out in 1975 by providing only frames. In 1976 they would supply entire bicycles.

For many people Trek is most famous for sponsoring Lance Armstrong’s U.S. Postal team during the late 90’s up to his retirement.

Trek 5000 1989

But Trek already pioneered the use of carbon fiber in 1989 with the Trek 5000.

Trek Y Foil 1998

It would result in the short-lived but daring design of the Y-Foil, introduced in 1998. One of the few bikes that is designated with something more than just a number.

Trek 850 1983

They were also early adopters of the mountain bike craze, with the Trek 850 launched in 1983.

Trek Y22 1995

Their early foray in using carbon fiber would be later used with the introduction of the iconic Y33 and Y22 models. Mountain bikes with a monocoque carbon fiber frame. Although it used the suspension technique URT ( unified rear triangle ) which would turn out to be rubbish, the original design was considered iconic.

First Look: Trek’s 2015 Mountain Bikes

New Fuel EX, Lush, and Remedy models unveiled

Headshot of mike yozell

  • The Trek Fuel EX full-suspension trail bike line sees two new 27.5-inch offerings in carbon and three in aluminum. Prices start at $2,630 for the aluminum models and $5,250 for carbon. The bikes are on their way to shops now.  • The women’s Lush full-suspension line goes from three models to four, and moves from 29er wheels to 27.5.  • The Remedy 29 will also be offered in carbon for 2015, with availability TBD.

First Ride: Re:aktiv and Fuel EX 27.5 Trek partnered with Penske Racing shocks to improve the dampers found in the Dual Rate Control Valve (DRCV) shocks found on its Fuel, Lush, and Remedy bikes. Penske Racing has a long history building shocks for some of the most demanding motorsports, including F1, NASCAR, and World Touring car racing as well as other disciplines such as ATV and motocross.

The new technology is dubbed Re:aktiv. At the heart of the system is a new damper stack that allows faster low-speed-compression reaction time while providing a firmer platform for pedaling. The new shocks will retain the DRCV air spring, and will continue to be produced by Fox Racing Shocks. The DRCV shock has two air chambers. On smaller bumps or smooth terrain, the shock uses only the primary chamber. Larger hits that force the shock shaft to travel halfway through its stroke open an auxiliary chamber that increases the overall air volume. Trek claims the DRCV offers the lively feel of a shock with a smaller air spring, but provides the plush bump absorption of a larger air spring. Combining that technology with a firmer platform to pedal against, it says, will result in a bike that will perform just as well whether you’re pedaling over rough terrain or letting the suspension (and gravity) do the work on a descent.

2015 Trek Lush 650b (Sterling Lorence)

Jose Gonzalez, Trek’s director of suspension design, explained that the new damper optimizes the suspension by keeping the shock at the sag point (previous-generation shocks tended to sit closer to the mid-point of the stroke). The benefits of this are twofold: It holds the bike closer to the true geometry of each model and allows the damper to react quicker and return to its optimum position sooner. As a result, the bikes pedal more crisply in all three shock modes, Climb, Trail, and Descend.

Trek also linked up with Push industries to supply air volume reducers for its DRCV shocks and forks. The parts are available directly from Push and allow riders to tune the suspension to their liking by altering the factory air spring rate. These small spacers are available in multiple sizes so you can make incremental changes in a fork’s or shock’s air spring rate.

Related:  Tested: Trek Lush 27.5

I tested the design on the new 27.5-inch carbon Fuel EX 9.8, a 120mm travel bike perfect for the hills and hollers of the DuPont State Forest. Compared to the previous non-Re:aktiv equipped machines, the bike did sit higher in the travel without resorting to higher air pressure and/or an air-volume reducer. The Climb mode, which was previously useful only for long, smooth ascents, became a viable setting for anything from pavement-smooth trail to smaller bumps and rougher patches of track. Set in Trail mode the shock provided crisp, efficient pedaling, remaining firm when I stood to jet up over small rises or during sustained seated climbs. Yet it still ate up the bumps when the terrain became stuttery and coarse. I spent the bulk of my time in Trail mode, resorting to the fully open Descend mode only at the highest speeds on the chunkiest terrain.

Re:aktiv will be available on Trek’s 9-series bikes this year. Lower-end models could get the new damper as early as 2015.

New Remedy 29 Carbon with Boost 148 The Remedy 29 gets a makeover for next year with the addition of carbon-frame offerings. Most of the bike remains unchanged, with geometry and spec carrying over from the current models. The biggest change is at the tail of the bike, with the introduction of Boost 148. Trek increased stiffness laterally in the wheels by partnering with SRAM to offer a hub that is 6mm wider at the axle ends and pushes the hub flanges out by 3mm each. Trek claims this will create better triangulation and even out spoke tension, and that the 29er wheels will ride closer in stiffness to their smaller counterparts. The Boost 148 design adds clearance to the frame for tires as large as 2.3 inches, while also keeping chainstays short and chainline in check for proper shifting performance. For riders using a single-ring drivetrain—the system will work with a double setup too—SRAM developed a spider that keeps the centerline of the ring in proper alignment with the cassette so shifting performance is unaffected. Trek and SRAM designated the system as “open source,” so the design is available to any manufacturer.

Trek 2015 road range - an overview

Lightweight Émonda all but replaces aero Madone

Matthew Allen/Bikeradar

Matthew Loveridge

2015 trek catalogue

Although Trek has now done away with model years, it still observes the annual tradition that is Trek World. BikeRadar was at Silverstone race circuit for this year's event, which revealed a radical shake-up of the company's road collection.

The big news is that the new Émonda line of bikes, topped by the £11,000/AU$15,999 weight weenie SLR 10 build , has all but replaced the Madone standard-bearer.

Trek's road range is divided into 'performance race' and 'endurance race' – the latter header applies to the the Domane range, while the former category is subdivided into 'lightweight' (the Émonda) and 'aero' (the Madone).

Check out more of our Trek 2015 coverage.

The remarkable Emonda SLR 10, 4.8kg (10.6lb) as pictured That said, most of the Madone range is no more. The aluminium 2 series remains, along with the range-topping 7 series, but everything in-between has been superseded by the Émonda.

There are three levels of Émonda frame which are, in ascending order of price, the S (300 Series OCLV carbon, BB86 bottom bracket), the SL (500 Series OCLV carbon, BB90 bottom bracket, full carbon fork) and the SLR (700 Series OCLV carbon, BB90 bottom bracket, full carbon fork).

The Emonda's frame is an entirely new design Prices start at £1,200/AU$1,899 for an S 4 with Tiagra, although the cheapest model is not expected to be available in the UK until April. Select versions of the S and SL models are already shipping, while availability for the SLR is to be confirmed, as is US pricing and availability. We've already got our hands on an SLR 8 and will be bringing you a full review in the coming months.

The rim brake Domane range remains largely unchanged apart from cosmetic details, while the disc range has expanded to include the 4 series. Most interesting to us is the 4.5 Disc, which gets full hydraulics with the forthcoming Shimano R685 levers, as well as mechanical Ultegra components at a very reasonable sounding £2,300/AU$3,599. If that sounds too expensive, the 4.0 Disc (Sora) and 4.3 Disc (105 5800) are £1,500/AU$N/A and £1,900/AU$2,749 respectively. Both use the hybrid hydraulic/mechanical TRP Hy/Rd brakes.

Trek hasn't forgotten its female customers. In addition to the Lexa line of entry-level road bikes and the existing WSD versions of the 7-series Madone, there's now an all-new women's road platform – the carbon Silque. It aims to combine the rear-end comfort of the Domane with some of the liveliness of the Madone, catered specifically to the needs of female riders. Refreshingly, that looks like it could mean a little more than simply 'shrink-it-and-pink-it' .

The Silque is an all-new carbon road bike developed specifically for women

Check out our gallery above for some highlights from the show, including more shots of the remarkable Émonda SLR 10.

China's Chang'e 6 probe to land on far side of the moon this weekend to return lunar samples to Earth

Touchdown will apparently occur on Saturday night (June 1).

a gold-foil-covered cylindrical spacecraft above the moon

China's Chang'e 6 moon mission is studying landing sites on the lunar far side for accessibility ahead of a planned touchdown attempt this weekend.

The robotic Chang'e 6 launched on May 3 and entered lunar orbit about five days later. James Head, of the Department of Earth, Environmental and Planetary Science at Brown University in Rhode Island, has been working with China's cadre of lunar exploration planners.

At a May 24 meeting of the project science working group for NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter mission, Head detailed the progression of China's moon effort, and in a subsequent interview with SPACE.com, shared details of China's moon exploration plans.

Related: China's Chang'e 6 probe to the moon's far side has a big lunar mystery to solve

Projected landing date

The Chang'e 6 mission profile is essentially identical to that of Chang'e 5 , Head told Inside Outer Space. That earlier effort, which landed in December 2020, returned to Earth 61 ounces (1,731 grams) of lunar material from Northern Oceanus Procellarum near a huge volcanic complex called Mons Rümker, on the northwest lunar near side.

Chang'e 6 is apparently targeting a landing on Sunday (June 2) Beijing time, which would likely be Saturday evening (June 1) for folks in North America. The mission will then spend three days studying its landing area and collecting samples. This sequence will be followed by the sample-loaded ascent module rocketing off the moon into lunar orbit, for rendezvous and docking with the mission's lunar orbiter component.

The lunar collectibles will be transferred into a return-to-Earth module for the trek to our planet. If all goes according to plan, the samples, inside their return capsule, will touch down under parachutes here on June 25 (Beijing time).

Sample catalog

The retrieved samples will then be transferred to a lunar receiving lab in Beijing for examination. The far side specimens are to be described and documented, prior to publication of a Chang'e 6 sample catalog.

The China National Space Administration (CNSA) will then make the samples available for study, via application, by the scientific community, Head said.

In the case of Chang'e 5, China ultimately delivered about 0.6 ounces (17 g) of samples to 13 institutions that had submitted applications to CNSA's Lunar Exploration and Space Program Center to utilize them for research purposes.

The Chang'e 6 landing site is within the South Pole-Aitken Basin (SPA), the largest and most ancient impact basin on the moon. The SPA is in the southern part of the Apollo basin. It's possible that Chang'e 6 will haul back to Earth lunar basalts that hold insights about magmatic processes and mantle properties of the far side.

"We can conduct exploration and research on the oldest soil and lunar soil on the moon, which will reveal the history of the formation of the moon," Wang Chi, chief scientist of the fourth phase of China's lunar exploration project, recently explained to China Central Television (CCTV).

"The main task of Chang'e 6 is to collect samples from the Aitken Basin on the far side of the moon and return them. In order to facilitate sampling, we also have a series of payloads. For example, our panoramic camera will be used to detect the terrain and landforms, and an important payload is the lunar radar, which will be used to investigate the geological structure," said Wang.

Solar illumination

The Chang'e 6 lander relies on solar panels for power generation.

"Our spacecraft depends on solar illumination for power generation, and this illumination varies with latitude," Lu Yuntong, an engineer at the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, told CCTV.

"For this mission, we have selected a landing site in a region with moderate latitude," Lu added. "We chose the South Pole-Aitken Basin due to its adequate solar illumination and reliable communication signals, meeting the engineering standards."

Popular on Variety

“When I started to see all this enthusiasm about the songs, I was like, I love those songs, too,” McKee tells Variety . “And I was so, so heartbroken to have to grieve those and move on… But music had changed. We went into bedroom pop and everything wasn’t sparkly, maximalist pop music anymore. It was dated at that time. It really is all about timing because I started seeing people talking about, ‘We miss the Katy Perry days, we miss Britney Spears, we miss traditional pop.’ I was like, I have a whole ass album, some of my favorite songs I’ve written, just sitting there collecting dust.”

But the forum posts in 2020 sparked a renewed interest in what she thought was lost forever. While in lockdown, McKee decided to “pull a Taylor Swift” and rerecord the entire album, working hand in hand with producer David Mørup to recreate the aged songs — all unfinished, all demos — in a contemporary context. Now, a decade after the cotton candy buzz of “American Girl” gave a false start to her solo career, McKee is releasing “Hot City” this Friday, finally on her own terms as an independent artist with full control of her vision.

“I learned a lot about myself and thinking about how much I’ve changed since I wrote this album, but the theme is consistent, and that is perseverance,” she explains. “And as much as I don’t really love being the poster child for perseverance, because that means that you had to fail a bunch, I feel like I have a responsibility now to be like, you just keep going. I wish there was something else that could be fulfilling to me, but I’m an artist whether I like it or not. So I feel like I’m finally seeing through my true calling or whatever.”

“Hot City” burns bright and fast, from the Cherelle-sampling single “Jenny’s Got a Boyfriend” to the sugar-soaked “Don’t Get Mad Get Famous” featuring Sophie Powers. Indeed, it’s a callback to the early 2010s when pop music with oversized abandon dominated the radio, but reconfigured with the sonic sheen of modern studio technique. Only one song, “Snatched” featuring drag queen Priyanka, is entirely new, while the original versions of “American Girl” and French-touched “Sleepwalker” sidle up to the rest of the rerecordings.

McKee embarked on the road back to “Hot City” while working on a separate album. She spent a year cold-emailing people at Sony Music before she finally connected with the catalog department, where her demos lived among the archives. No one at the company was there when she was on the roster, so it didn’t take much convincing to get clearance and begin toiling on the new version of the album.

“We’re working together and I own these new masters because they’re all brand new, but there were a couple of moments where I was like, I can’t recreate this and I want to use this original thing. And they were kind enough to allow me to license ‘American Girl,’ which they fully paid for,” she says. Even then, “American Girl” wasn’t cleared until a few weeks before album release, and McKee spent late nights in the run-up to release putting finishing touches on the final product.

When she inked a deal with Epic in 2012, she had already released her debut album “Trouble” eight years prior, signed to Reprise Records (via Warner Music) and “held hostage” for six years the contract. Her future looked promising. She’d already nabbed cowrites on Perry’s “California Gurls,” “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” “Teenage Dream” and “Part of Me” — all number one singles — by the time “American Girl” released. She was trying to break free of her reputation as one of the industry’s best-kept secrets, and “American Girl” seemed to be her ticket to stardom.

But in the end, having co-writes on songs that defined an era was a blessing as much as it was a curse. “If I had come out the gate just being Jane Doe from Minnesota or whatever and ‘American Girl’ had done what it had done, everyone would be very impressed,” she says. “But because I was coming at the tail end of an insane run, I was viewed as a flop. Even the label felt that way, where it was like, oh we signed Bonnie McKee and she’s signed to [Dr.] Luke and she’s done all this other shit. Why isn’t it blowing up overnight? Because I’m still new to the public, people don’t know who I am. Y’all know who I am because I’ve been behind the scenes and I’ve been making you money for years. But the average person on the street doesn’t know who writes these songs, so I needed help just like any other beginning artist, even though I was already a veteran.”

She was set to release her follow-up single “Slay” to coincide with her opening slot on the Jonas Brothers’ tour, and as luck would have it, the trio disbanded the day before it was supposed to begin. She regrouped and booked another tour with Karmin, paying out of pocket, but with the seemingly lukewarm reception to “American Girl,” Epic backed off from “Slay” and its backing in her as an artist.

“[Then-Chairman and CEO] L.A. Reid was just like, ‘Yeah, nah, I don’t think it’s a hit,'” she recalls. “I was like, you haven’t even tried yet. But also, even with just the ‘American Girl’ thing, I was like this is on fire, this is gonna go. And they were like, eh, we’re done spending money on that. I was like, we’re so close. So I definitely had a meltdown when I got that call that they were going to stop promoting it and I was like, why? Why?”

With “Hot City,” though, McKee is starting fresh. She’s been through depressive episodes, wondering if pop music — or music in general — was a path that she should continue to pursue. But without expectations for how it will land, she feels content giving her core fans what they’ve long been anticipating, one forum post at a time. “Right now, I just hope that it can be an escape for people, because times are tough for everybody that I talk to,” she says. “So I hope that I can be a bright spot in a dark world, and to inspire hope that no matter what, it’s never too late. And just do what you love and be who you want to be. It’s really about hope and joy and crying and dancing. That’s the goal.”
