The 8 best safari day trips and weekends from Cape Town
Track down the elusive ‘Big Five’, and have a whale of a time doing it
Can you go on a safari from Cape Town? It’s a question often asked by curious travellers thinking of planning a trip to the Mother City, unsure of whether they’ll be able to catch a glimpse of various fantastic creatures. Happily, the answer is a big ‘Yes indeed.’ Cape Town’s charm extends far beyond the urban centre, and one of its most alluring elements – beyond the mesmerising mountain views and glimmering Atlantic Seaboard – is its proximity to nature.
South Africa is renowned for its wildlife, and while the Western Cape may be a little more under-the-radar in this arena than other regions, it still has its fair share of nature reserves. Just a short drive from Cape Town you can spot the ‘Big Five’ (that ’s: lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and African buffaloes) roaming the veld, learn about conservation efforts and spot whales breaching from the Atlantic Coast. For those wanting to take a walk on the wild side, here are the best lodges and reserves for a safari day trip from Cape Town.

The best safaris near Cape Town
1. Aquila Game Reserve
At just under a two-hour drive from the city, Aquila Game Reserve has certainly earned a name for itself as a top safari experience near Cape Town. The reserve helped reintroduce the Big Five to the Western Cape and is rooted in wildlife rehabilitation, land protection and community support. Whether you opt for a day trip or book a couple of nights, you can take a traditional safari in an off-road vehicle or choose to search for the Big Five from a quad bike. If you’re lucky, you may just spot the elusive Cape mountain leopard. After a day of wildlife thrills, soak in the infinity pool, refuel with some traditional South African cuisine or treat yourself to a spa afternoon. Accommodation ranges from rustic digs to plush cottages.
2. Inverdoorn Game Reserve
A Big Five game reserve located around a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Cape Town, Inverdoorn Game Reserve is a wild escape into the arid plains of the vast, dessert-like Karoo region. A home to lions, elephants, giraffe, zebras, hippos and wildebeest, Inverdoorn also hosts a cheetah rescue and rehabilitation centre. This conseration-focused establishment offers an opportunity to disconnect in the wilderness while searching for some of South Africa’s most exciting creatures. Rest your head in cosy, tented camps and relax in a pool with views over the veld and golden mountains on the horizon.
3. Fairy Glen Private Game Reserve
One of the closest safari experiences to Cape Town, Fairy Glen Private Game Reserve is set against the craggy foothills of the Brandwacht Mountains. Just over an hour from the city by car, Fairy Glen transports visitors to a magical, rustic setting, with options for both day and overnight safaris. Count yourself extra lucky if you spot a leopard, but elephants, lions and other creatures roam the plains in relative abundance. Stay overnight in the self-catering accommodation to maximise your chances of spotting various fantastic beasts at sunrise and sunset.
4. Goudkop Bush Camp
This simple and underrated wildlife destination is found two hours north of Cape Town. Goudkop Bush Camp is a quiet cattle and sheep farm on Skrik van Rondom Farmstall, set in the heart of the Sandveld Nature Reserve. Stay in a thatched roof hut tucked into the slopes of the valley, hike along rocky trails, look for elk and other wildlife on a game drive, or simply unwind and do nothing in this slice of nature. The on-site restaurant and farm shop will keep you happily fed and watered during your stay.
5. Sanbona Wildlife Reserve
Stretching across 58,000 hectares, Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is a pristine and unparalleled experience in the South African wilderness. A three-and-a-half-hour drive from Cape Town – taking in the stunning scenery of the R62 tourist route along the way – will get you to Sanbona, situated in the rugged and beautiful valley of the Little Karoo, just outside Montagu. Treat yourself to a weekend of wildlife viewings rooted in conservation, while unwinding in luxury safari tents or manor houses among the still plains. Elephants, lions and giraffes are all in the mix when you’re on a nature walk or a safari drive through the rolling hills and dramatic rock formations. If you fancy tracking down some visual wonders that are even easier to locate, the stargazing here is also pretty spectacular.
6. Gondwana Private Game Reserve
Situated along the Garden Route in Mossel Bay, Gondwana Private Game Reserve is a little further from Cape Town (a four-and-a-half-hour drive), but certainly worth the journey if time is on your side. Eco-friendly camps and villas ooze luxury safari aesthetic, while also blending into the towering green hills. From spotting elephants wandering the reserve and lions napping in the sun, to learning about the native fynbos species and searching for sunbirds, falcons and cranes on a bird-centric safari, a weekend at Gondwana promises to be a wild ride.
7. Grootbos Nature Reserve
Grootbos Nature Reserve embodies the meaning of ‘where the mountains meet the sea.’ Throw some forests into the equation, and you’ve got a spectacular eco-reserve. Just over two hours from Cape Town, Grootbos transports its guests deep into nature and offers an experience that’s notably different from a typical safari weekend. Set out from the elegant accommodation on a botanical walk to learn about endangered plants, look for over 20 species of mammal (including many types of antelope) and don’t forget to keep an eye out for whales appearing along the coast.
8. Hermanus
Formerly a small fishing village, Hermanus has blossomed into a charming harbour town that attracts visitors from far and wide. Whale watching is what brings the crowds here, as Hermanus is graced with migrating southern right whales from June through to December. Try and spot them from the wind-swept beaches or join a boat tour and spend a day experiencing the splendour of these mighty marine mammals. Hop in your car, make that 90-minute journey from Cape Town and stay for a day or two in this whale watching paradise.

"I have traveled and led adventures throughout 10 countries in Africa and over the years I’ve done more safaris than I can count. With all those trips comes a lot of experience. I must say that I believe we have outdone ourselves with this South African Wildlife Safari. It has just the right balance of luxury and adventure, guided time and open space! From the ocean to the mountains, the savanna to the rivers, from private wild animal reserves to the simple sophistication of “sundowners” over a hippo/crocodile pond with warm acquaintances and new-found friends, this safari is one of, if not the best we have ever created." ~Gene Taylor, Co-Founder~

Here's What You Can Do In 10 Days In South Africa With Your Teammates & iConquer!
Visit the Cape of Good Hope! Then, cage dive with sharks, go wine tasting, walk with penguins, run a marathon, tour Cape Town, Summit Table Mountain, party with friends, see a rhinoceros, giraffe, lion, cheetah, gazelle, baboons and wildebeest all in one day, dine in a "boma," hear lions roar in the distance as you sleep, see curious monkeys sway the treetops, take a picture of elephants, gazelle, impala and zebra with just one shot, sleep in a permanent tented camp, sip a beverage as the sun sets over the Indian Ocean, dine while nearby hippos tussle and snort at each other, and perhaps the biggest thrill of all, see the circle of life unfold between predator and prey. Lion, wild dogs, leopard, cheetah, hyena, crocodile -- impala, buffalo, zebra and gazelle. Ground scavengers and birds finish whatever is left. More things: Go to a rooftop party, walk the Indian Ocean coastline, dine al fresco in a South African vineyard, imagine you're in a movie with Meryl Streep or Robert Redford, visit Robben Island and walk in the footsteps of Nelson Mandela. And that is only following the outlined activities! There is also plenty of free time for you to explore on your own.

It's been too long but I wanted to thank you both for arranging a great family adventure in Peru for us. Peru is amazing and Javier and Yessica were compassionate and enthusiastic hosts; they really taught us, cared for us (especially me!) and immersed us in the culture and history of the land. 3-Day Kruger Safari Tours
The Kruger National Park is one of Africa’s great safari destinations. Extending over 19,485km²/7,523mi², it is one of the largest national parks anywhere on the continent, and home to 150 mammal and more than 500 bird species. When it comes to the Big Five, Kruger is a key stronghold for both species of African rhino, and it also supports immense herds of elephant and buffalo, and some unusually relaxed big cats. A 3-day Kruger safari provides a great opportunity to get a good look at South Africa’s most popular national park, and to enjoy a sampling of its varied wildlife. Be warned, however, that once you have visited Kruger and caught the safari bug, you may well want to return one day for a longer safari.

6 Questions About 3-Day Kruger Safaris
Answered by
Philip briggs.
Is 3 days enough time for a trip in Kruger National Park?
“Absolutely. Three days is sufficient to get a decent feel for Kruger’s landscapes and to see a good selection of its wildlife, though it will restrict you to exploring one small area of this vast park. That said, if it is possible to spend longer than 3 days in Kruger, I would give it serious consideration. Additional time in the park will allow you to explore it more thoroughly, and every extra game drive improves the odds of seeing elusive species, such as leopard, cheetah, African wild dog and rhino.”
Is it better to fly or go overland to Kruger?
“As a rule, it’s more efficient to fly, especially for a short safari. Kruger is about five hours’ drive from Gauteng (which includes Johannesburg, Pretoria and O.R. Tambo International Airport), so the return drive will eat into your safari time. That said, many Kruger tours do start and end in Gauteng, and this has its advantages too. Driving is generally cheaper, and you will see some interesting countryside en route. And, with an early start, you’ll be in Kruger for lunch. Kruger is further from seaside destinations such as Durban, Cape Town or the Garden Route, so traveling overland isn’t a realistic option unless you’ve enough spare days to treat it as a road trip. One situation where driving into Kruger is clearly preferable is if you’re already staying close by, for instance in Mbombela, Hazyview or Hoedspruit. It also makes sense to drive if your Kruger safari is part of a longer road trip through the likes of Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) or northern KwaZulu-Natal. If you decide to fly, several different airports service Kruger, and your best choice will be influenced by where you’ll be staying. The busiest flight hub is Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport, which lies outside the national park, but offers good access to southern Kruger via Numbi Gate (40km/25mi) or Phabeni Gate (60km/36mi). Useful alternatives include Skukuza Airport, which stands inside the park close to Skukuza Rest Camp, and Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport, which is near central Kruger’s Orpen Gate.”
What accommodation can I expect?
“Accommodation options are wide open on a 3-day tour to Kruger. More than a dozen rest camps offer the choice of camping or staying in a comfortable self-catering bungalow. Some safaris stay outside the park, at one of several lodges that lie close to an entrance gate. These accommodation options include simple backpacker lodges, smart chain hotels and owner-managed boutique properties. In terms of pure value for money, accommodation options outside the park are generally preferable. Personally, given the choice, however, I would always stay within the park. This allows you to enjoy the memorable experience of being in the bush at night. It also leaves you better placed for game drives in the early morning, when carnivores are most active. At the top end of the range, several private game lodges stand in concessions within Kruger, and many more can be found in the various private reserves that share open boundaries with the national park. These all-inclusive lodges tend to be small and luxurious, and to place a strong emphasis on quality wining and dining. In private reserves and concessions, guided game drives in open 4x4s are the norm, and you’re likely to enjoy better big cat sightings than you would on public roads.”
Which animals am I likely to see on a 3-day Kruger safari?
“On any tour to Kruger, you stand a good chance of seeing all the Big Five and many other iconic African savannah creatures. Elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, warthog and hippo are all but certain, together with a varied selection of antelope including wildebeest, greater kudu and impala. On a 3-day safari, lions are very likely, as are spotted hyenas and jackals, but leopard and cheetah are a little less likely. Kruger is an important stronghold for both rhino species: the larger and more placid white rhino is common and very likely to be seen over the course of 3 days, but you would be very lucky to see the more scarce and secretive black rhino. Kruger supports excellent and varied birdlife and you can expect to see heavyweights, such as ostrich, southern ground hornbill, saddle-billed stork and various vultures and eagles.”
How do I avoid the crowds in the park?
“The best way to dodge the crowds in Kruger is to avoid the public area south of the Sabie River. The majority of rest camps are concentrated in this southern sector, and it’s also the main area utilized by day safaris. The payoff is that southern Kruger offers the most reliable wildlife viewing in the park, and your best chance of spotting all the Big Five on a 3-day safari. Within Kruger’s southern sector, traffic is heaviest around Skukuza, the largest rest camp, so a good compromise is to stay at smaller rest camps such as Lower Sabie, Crocodile Bridge or Malelane. Another good compromise would be to stay in central Kruger, staying at a rest camp such as Satara, Olifants or Letaba. Central Kruger also offers good wildlife viewing, but it is seldom as crowded as the far south. The area north of Letaba is even less crowded, but wildlife viewing tends to be slow, so it is not recommended for first-time visitors. If you are not restricted by budget, think about staying at a private reserve bordering Kruger (for instance MalaMala Game Reserve, Sabi Sand Game Reserve or Klaserie Nature Reserve), or a concession lodge within southern Kruger (these include Shishangeni, Lukimbi and Rhino Post safari lodges). These exclusive variations on the Kruger experience take guests on guided 4x4 safaris through areas that are rich in wildlife but closed to the general public. Kruger attracts a high volume of domestic visitors, so it’s best to avoid long weekends and local school holidays.”
How much does a 3-day safari in Kruger National Park cost?
“The price of a 3-day Kruger safari depends on whether you stay inside or outside the reserve, and whether you camp, stay in budget rest camps, or go for more luxurious accommodation. Typically you will be looking at around US$650 per person at the lower end of the price scale, US$900 to US$1,000 in the mid-range, and US$1,200 to US$1,600 or upwards for a more luxurious and exclusive experience in a concession lodge or private reserve. Kruger is also well suited to self-drive visits, which usually work out more cheaply than guided safaris. The negative of self-driving is that you’re unlikely to see as much wildlife as you would with an expert guide, but it does offer a greater sense of autonomy.”

What our guests say about Candis
April 26, 2024
Great planning and service
Great planning and service, and everything worked like clockwork. We booked an Inyari Lodge safari with air with Safari.com. it wasn't clear if there will be 2 or three of us, so with Candis' help we booked a family chalet for 2 and added the third later when it was confirmed he can come. Candis put us on flights that maximized our game drive time (unlike some of the other guests) so we got all 6 drives in 3 nights. The lodge was great. Especially the game drives. We saw more than we hoped for. Additionally, Safari.com's insurance was very competitive. Highly recommended.

The time difference across the globe made no difference. I am so excited for the itinerary she has put together. I usually cobble my own itinerary together for our holidays and it’s so time consuming and hard work. This was a piece of cake! Thank you Shann.

Hop on Cape Town's enchanting sunset safari with this guide
Nestled at the southern tip of Africa, Cape Town is a rare gem that offers an exceptional mix of wild animals and stunning landscapes. Its distinctive location provides an extraordinary opportunity for safari adventures during the enchanting hours when the sun sets, casting a kaleidoscope of colors across the sky. This pursuit of the ultimate sunset shot with wildlife is a truly memorable escapade.
Discover wildlife at dusk
As the day's light wanes, set out on a guided safari within a renowned Cape Town reserve. This twilight time rouses nocturnal animals, and the savannah buzzes with life. Expert rangers will lead you to spots where you can capture lions hunting or elephants outlined by the sinking sun, offering a unique chance to photograph wildlife during this vibrant time of day.
Capture iconic African sunsets
The African sunset offers a stunning backdrop for capturing wildlife. To seize these moments, set up a tripod and tweak your camera for low light. Patience is essential. Await the perfect opportunity when the animals are silhouetted against the vibrant sky. This practice will reward you with that magical shot where the wild is bathed in the sunset's glow.
Engage with local guides
Local guides, with their deep understanding of animal behavior and habitats, lead you to secluded vantage points for the best wildlife views at sunset. Their insights enrich your experience, ensuring that each photograph you take is more than just an image; it's a story imbued with the essence of the wild, a narrative brought to life against the vibrant evening sky.
Savor sundowner moments
After your photo adventure, embrace the "sundowner" tradition. This is when you unwind with a drink, watching the sun melt away at day's end. It's an integral part of the experience, not solely about photography but also about connecting with the serene beauty of nature. As you relax, let the peace of the landscape envelop you, cherishing these moments of calm in the wild.
Preserve your memories
After your safari, take time to go through your photographs and pick the finest to immortalize your experience. Turn these selected images into photo books or framed prints, crafting lasting keepsakes of your Cape Town adventure. These cherished items will be a constant reminder of the time when nature's evening majesty was captured through your camera's lens.
