During your stay in Ajaccio, you will notice that many places are named after Bonaparte . That’s not a surprise, as the emblematic French Emperor was born there!

That’s why I wanted to start this Ajaccio’s travel guide with the birth house of Napoleon Bonaparte.

Born on August 15, 1769, he spent a part of his childhood there. The last time he visited this house was in 1799, when he came home after his successful military campaign in Egypt.

The house is now a museum dedicated to the Bonaparte family . When walking through the different rooms (bedrooms, living room, dining room, boudoir), you will discover some of the original furniture, but also the Bonaparte’s family history and family tree.

You will find all the useful information to plan your visit on the official website .

If you’re visiting Corsica and Ajaccio in August , don’t miss the Napoleonic Days, organized as a tribute to the Emperor.

Napoléon Bonaparte Ajaccio

If you’re an art lover, then you should definitely visit the Fesch Palace during your stay in Ajaccio.

It was built by Napoleon’s maternal uncle , Cardinal Joseph Fesch, to create an art-dedicated place  in Corsica. He also wanted to encourage the artistic and intellectual training of the island’s young people.

Nowadays, the Palace has kept his original purpose, as it houses Ajaccio’s Fine Arts Museum .

During your visit, you will enjoy masterpieces by great Italian painters such as Poussin, Botticelli or Titian. The museum hosts one of France’s largest collections, right after the Louvre Museum in Paris .

You can also discover a whole section dedicated to the Bonaparte family, with several portraits and another one presenting Corsican paintings .

And if you want to know more about the rates and schedules, you can visit the official website.

Fesch Palace Ajaccio

The Fine Arts Museum’s entrance ticket allows you to discover another tourist attraction of Ajaccio: the Imperial Chapel .

Built in 1857 by Napoleon III, this historical monument is located right next to the museum’s South wing.

The chapel hosts the tombs of a few imperial family members , including Napoleon’s parents, Charles and Letizia Bonaparte.

You can also choose visit the Imperial Chapel without going to the Fesch museum before.

Imperial Chapel Ajaccio

During your holidays in Corsica, you should definitely take some time to taste the best local specialties.

In Ajaccio , the best place to do so is the market located on the Foch square. There, you will find all the best local products: delicatessen, regional cheeses, wines, or jams.

It’s perfect to prepare a good picnic or to find the best products to bring back from your trip to Ajaccio!

You can enjoy the Ajaccio market every morning from April to October. Note that it closes on Mondays from November to March.

If you’ve rented an apartment in Ajaccio and have the opportunity to cook, don’t hesitate to go to the fish market locted close to the City Hall. There, you can buy fresh fishes caught in the morning!

Corsican Delicatessen

While walking in Ajaccio, you will discover the city’s Cathedral.

In fact, don’t expect a huge building. The Cathedral is a rather small church located between the houses, recognizable by its bright orange facade. It was built at the end of the 16th century and is dedicated to Our-Lady-of-the-Assumption, Ajaccio’s patron saint, who saved the town from a plague epidemic.

If you’re lucky enough to get inside the Cathedral (as it has quite random visiting hours), don’t miss the “Vierge du Sacré-Coeur” (The Virgin of the Sacred Heart) painting by Eugène Delacroix . You will also discover beautiful frescoes.

And for the anecdote, Napoleon Bonaparte was baptized here in 1771.

You’re going to Ajaccio?

You probably know it: the hardest part of planning your trip is to find an hotel offering a good value for money!

Hopefully, there is a pretty simple solution to this problem: do like me and book your hotel as early as possible!

So, my best advice is to take 5 minutes (now) to have a look at the list of travelers’ favorite hotels in Ajaccio.

And if you see a good offer, book it!

Most hotels offer free cancellation, so it’s quick, easy, and you will avoid the the inconvenience of finding nothing but mediocre rooms at exorbitant prices.

Once you’ve booked your hotel, it will be time to continue reading this guide and find out more about the best things to do in Ajaccio!

Ajaccio Cathedral

The Place de Gaulle is a large square, considered as the boundary between Ajaccio’s old town and the new districts.

There, you will find a statue of Napoleon (again!) surrounded by his 4 brothers, as well as a monument commemorating the liberation of Ajaccio by General de Gaulle, during World War 2.

The square is directly overlooking the sea. It’s also the starting point of the small shopping streets , where you will find many bars and restaurants.

The place often hosts animations and concerts in summer, as well as the Christmas Market in winter. The locals are often playing “Petanque” here, while their children are riding bicycles and scooters.

place de Gaulle Ajaccio

The Place d’Austerlitz is another tourist site of Ajaccio referring to Napoleon.

This vast square is dominated by a large statue of Bonaparte with is famous cocked hat. This statue is the exact replica of the one exhibited at the Invalides, in Paris.

The monument is completed by 2 eagles statues and a commemorative stone retracing all his victories and battles.

Right next to the monument, you can also go to Bonaparte’s cave . It is said that as a child, he often came here to contemplate the sea from these rocks.

Grotte Bonaparte place d'Austerlitz Ajaccio

The surroundings of Cours Grandval , connecting Place de Gaulle and Place d’Austerlitz, are also known as the Foreigner’s district.

This neighborhood was built in the middle of the 19th century to welcome the English and German tourists looking for nice weather. During your stroll along the Cours Grandval , you will admire several beautiful buildings , including:

  • The Grand Hotel
  • Castle Conti
  • Cyrnos Palace
  • The Anglican church
  • Germania Hotel.

  • Petit Capo beach or Sevani beach, only separated from Grand Capo by a field.

The 2 beaches are easily accessible by car, as there are car parks located close to each of them.

And if you like hiking, go to Parata Point and take the customs officers’ path. This beautiful walk along the entire coast offers you breathtaking views of the Genoese Tower and the Sanguinaires Islands!

Commanding a lovely sweep of bay, the handsome city of Ajaccio has the self-confidence that comes with a starring role in world history. In summer, there’s more than a whiff of the Côte d’Azur to its pastel-toned, cafe-filled historic core and the trendy waterfront promenade that stretches west, buzzing with beachgoers by day and party people later on. But it’s in the tangled old-town lanes that the spectre of Napoléon Bonaparte looms largest, with the house where he was born in 1769 now serving as a museum to his memory. The headland alongside is dominated by a redoubtable citadel that’s sadly off limits to visitors, while a palace amid the newer boulevards to the north displays magnificent art collected by Napoléon’s uncle. With ferries from mainland France mooring right alongside, Ajaccio’s always bustling with activity.

Napoleon Bonaparte's birth house is in one of the narrow streets of the old town, rue Saint-Charles. The Bonaparte house is today home to a museum exhibiting its personal souvenirs. Other pieces (documents and medals) are on display in the Salon Napoléonien in the town hall. Many other museums are not to be missed, such as the Fesch museum bringing together Italian paintings and the A Bandera museum tracing the history and culture of Corsica.

The Gulf of Ajaccio features beautiful beaches and seaside resorts like Porticcio .

Additional information Ajaccio

City of Art and History and first commune liberated of France during the Second World War, Ajaccio is one of the jewels of the Island of Beauty, Corsica. Former imperial city, it takes place to the south of the island, on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea.

Very ancient, the commune of Ajaccio underwent a first development in antiquity, around the 2nd century BC, but it is mainly towards the end of the 15th century that it really takes off with the arrival Of the Genoese in its midst. The latter entirely rebuilt this abandoned city. It then passes under the bosom of France, and becomes chief town of the only department of the island under the orders of Napoleon I who originated there. The Corsican town is a popular vacation spot for the great people of this world in the 19th century and is still a popular tourist spot.

The economic center of the island, with Bastia, Ajaccio also has an important architectural, cultural and natural heritage that seduces visitors passing through this sunny and heavenly region.

Things to see and do

It can be reached by taking the stairs of a pyramid of granite. By the side, the cave Napoleon would have been the refuge of the great man during his childhood. There are family memorabilia, as well as objects testifying to the Corsican heritage. Other objects, such as documents and pieces that belonged to the Emperor, are visible in the Napoleonic Hall of the Town Hall. Do not miss the Imperial chapel that still houses the burials of its parents, as well as its brothers and sisters.

Built in the sixteenth century, the citadel of Ajaccio takes place in a strategic location to defend the city from maritime attacks. Originally a Genoese castle, the building is today a property of the army and can only be admired from outside.

Baptism of Napoleon Bonaparte, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta dates from the Renaissance. Classified as Historical Monuments, it unveils a baroque style developed by the Italian architect, Giacomo della Porta. The church reveals a beautiful yellow facade, and one can admire in its interior a master-altarpiece of the seventeenth century, as well as a painting attributed to Eugene Delacroix, The triumph of Religion.

Other religious buildings line the narrow streets of Ajaccio, like the neoclassical church of Saint-Roch. The chapel of Saint-Antoine de la Parata or the church of Saint-Erasme also deserves a visit.

The Lantivy Palace, which is part of the Monuments Historiques, is now used as a seat in the prefecture. Built in the XIXth century, it takes place on the course Napoleon and takes its name from a former prefect of the island, Gabriel de Lantivy of Kerveno. While walking in the center of the city, one can also appreciate the "quarter of the strangers" and its dwellings dating from the Belle Epoque. Discovering villas and palaces that welcomed English tourists at this time. Now transformed into social housing, the Cyrnos Palace was a luxury hotel of the 19th century that still unveils its façade.

Ajaccio has several museums, like that of Fesch, labeled Museum of France. Created by a gift from Cardinal Joseph Fesch, uncle of Napoleon I, he unveils a fine collection of Renaissance Italian paintings, as well as one of the most important works of art of the Napoleonic period. The museum A Bandera, meanwhile, offers to learn a little more about the history of Mediterranean Corsica through various collections and varied.

On the road of the same name that borders the south coast of the city, you can discover the charms of Saint Francis beach or discover the tomb of Tino Rossi, another great child of the country. Site Natura 2000, the archipelago hosts an important lighthouse, as well as natural reserves preserving the fauna and flora.

15 Best Things to Do in Ajaccio (France)

The capital of the Corse-du-Sud has the happy knack of packaging all of the things that people adore about Corsica .

You’ve got history, because Napoleon Bonaparte was born and baptised in the city, and his family donated lots of exciting memorabilia to the museums.

There’s cinematic natural scenery at Pointe de la Parata a few minutes from the city, or the mountains in the background covered with wild herbs, heather and myrtle shrubs.

And then you come to the beaches, which are plentiful, white and bathed by pale blue seas with mind-blowing clarity.

Lets explore the best things to do in Ajaccio :

1. Pointe de la Parata

Pointe de la Parata

On an island where stupendous natural spectacles are almost commonplace, Pointe de la Parata will still make you lost for words.

This is a black granite promontory announcing the northern limit of the Bay of Ajaccio, near the end of a stubborn string of rocky apexes that continue offshore to create the Sanguinaires Islands.

The headland is capped with a Genoese watchtower, 55 metres above the water and built as part of a network to defend the coast against Barbary pirate attacks in the 16th century.

Drive down  to the restaurant, and from there you can take the walking trail to get a closer look at the tower or dip your feet in the transparent seas.

2. Route des Sanguinaires

Route des Sanguinaires

Pulling out from the south coast of Ajaccio is a seaside route that leads to Pointe de Parata.

It incorporates the “Corniche Ajaccienne”, a raised, bending road that hugs the torturous contours of the rugged coast.

It’s all about the views, out to the Sanguinaires Islands and over the best beaches in Ajaccio, like Plage de Marinella.

On the way is the Saint-Antoine Cemetery where the feted Corsican singer Tino Rossi was laid to rest.

Now, you could make a similar journey via the Sentier des Crêtes (walk of the crests), only with your own two feet.

You’ll scurry along the ridge far above the coastal developments in a world of pines, prickly pears and blooming myrtle, for heart-lifting vistas of the sea.

3. Musée Fesch

Musée Fesch

Ajaccio’s Museum of Fine Arts is named after Napoleon’s uncle, Joseph Fesch, who was archbishop of Lyon.

In the early-1800s he founded this museum by donating his extravagant painting collection, and it constitutes one of the largest sets of Italian baroque and renaissance painting anywhere in France.

Cosmè Tura, Giovanni Bellini, Michelangelo, Veronese, Titian and Salvatore Rosa are just a few of the most famous artists featured.

The Fesch Museum is also where you can begin to track the history of the Bonaparte family, as there are around 700 works specific to the First and Second Empires, and busts of the Bonaparte line.

4. Maison Bonaparte

Maison Bonaparte

Napoleon’s birthplace is one of those attractions that is more about the significance of the place rather than what is there.

Really, all you need to know is that you’re inspecting the home in which an epoch-maker was born on 15 August 1769. The house has been decorated with Bonaparte family furniture, even if you have to use your imagination to picture what it would have been like in the 18th century.

The first Bonaparte to live at this understated four-storey house was Napoleon’s great-great grandfather in the late-17th century and the building remained in the family’s hands until 1923. Napoleon only spent his earliest years here, so there’s much to learn about the rest of the imperial family and their relationship with Ajaccio.

5. Salons Napoléoniens

Salons Napoléoniens

At Ajaccio’s town hall is a richly-decorated gallery replete with sculptures, paintings, medals and engravings connected to Napoleon and donated to the city by the Bonaparte family up to 1936. The horde of art and memorabilia is so large that it overflows into the Fesch Museum.

But the most riveting pieces are in town hall, where you can continue your little voyage through Ajaccio’s Bonaparte history by seeing the register recording Napoleon’s baptism.

On damask walls there’s a full-length portrait of Napoleon, paintings of Napoléon III and Empress Eugénie, as well as Napoleon’s brother Joseph when he was declared King of Spain during the Peninsular Wars.

6. Plage de Capo di Feno

Plage de Capo di Feno

There are more than 20 beaches in or near Ajaccio, mostly lively corners with transparent, smooth waters and white sands.

You may feel the urge to break from the crowd and if so you can drive the 10 kilometres to the coast just north of Pointe de la Parata.

Plage de Capo di Feno has a more savage beauty, with scrubland and forest, and a sandbar offshore causing breaks for surfers.

It’s not one for casual swimmers, but you can paddle in the wash and sunbathe on the pale sands.

Bring friends and a blanket, and stay to the evening  because the sunsets are unbeatable on this west-facing  beach.

7. Place Foch

Place Foch

Next to the town hall is an elongated square ringed by impressive old palm trees.

There’s a familiar face to receive you: Raised on a pedestal looking along the square to the port is a marble statue of Napoleon in the guise of a Roman consul, sculpted by the Italian Massimiliano Laboureur.

If you want to zip round Ajaccio’s sights in comfort you can catch the Petit Train at Place Foch.

But maybe the best reason to stop is for the Marchés des Producteurs de Pays on Saturday mornings, when the sheep’s cheese, cured meats, olives and wine made and grown in the countryside near Corsica are laid o

ut irresistibly on stalls on the square.

8. Ajaccio Cathedral

Ajaccio Cathedral

Back on the trail of Napoleon, Ajaccio cathedral is the church where the emperor was baptised on 21 July 1771. Not only that, but his mother Letizia started going into labour with him while attending the Mass of the Assumption on 15 August 1769. The marble font in which he was baptised is just inside the entrance.

Aside from its relation to Napoleon, the Cathedral is a handsome if stern 16th-century mannerist building with ochre walls that are illuminated by the sunshine.

Pause for a moment in the Chapel of the Madonna of Pianto, adorned with murals by Domenico Tintoretto (son of Jacopo) and Eugène Delacroix.

9. Tête de Mort

Tête de Mort

Rise early on a summer morning and beat the heat for a trek above Ajaccio, with breathtaking coastal scenes.

The trail zigzags up from the Bois des Anglais through the mastic shrub, cacti and wild olive undergrowth of the fabled Corsican maquis.

After a time you’ll arrive at a sinister-looking granite boulder, named the Tête de Mort (Head of Death), which according to local legend is the petrified head of Lucifer himself! The path then loops back round to meet the sea at Parc Berthault a few steps from Plage du Trottel, for a walk of about 90 minutes.

10. A Cupulatta

A Cupulatta

Turtles and tortoises from five continents live in this sanctuary and research centre 20 kilometres northeast of Ajaccio.

There are 3000 animals in all, from 170 species, and the Corsican climate and carefully configured tanks and enclosures at the two-hectare park allow them to flourish.

The turtle hatchery and nursery is sure to make you smile; if you come on the right day you can see a baby turtle breaking out of its egg.

Passing from Galápagos tortoises to diminutive European pond terrapins it’s food for thought to see how these animals have evolve in different parts of the world.

11. Plage d’Argent

Plage d'Argent

At the port in Ajaccio you can board a speedboat that will whisk you to this paradisiacal beach south of the city.

It’s the quickest way to do it, taking you there as the crow flies in around 20 minutes instead of an hour-long car trip on twisting mountain roads.

You’ll know why you made the effort when you set foot on the ribbon of flawless white sands that curls around the shallow bay for more than a kilometre.

The sea is as clear as glass and is still at knee-height ten metres from the shore.

And behind you are just a couple of homes and restaurants in hills coated with pine, heather and myrtle.

12. Watersports

paddle boarding

It would be redundant to list all the local companies providing water-based activities like paddle boarding, sea kayaking, diving, surfing and guided snorkelling trips (there are as many as 50 in the vicinity). Almost every beach around  Ajaccio has a watersports centre, and at the port there’s an abundance of yacht charter firms providing crewed and bareboat rentals.

As with motorboats and yachts, you’ll need a boat licence to hire a jet-ski by yourself, but not if you’re with a qualified supervisor.

Firms like “Hiking Jet Passion” offer guided trips to the most beautiful coves around the Gulf of Ajaccio.

13. Scandola Cruises

Scandola Cruises

Also in the port is a wide choice of cruise companies taking you on day-long voyages up Corisica’s west coast to the UNESCO-protected Scandola Nature Reserve, beloved for its basalt and granite rock formations.

The sight of the park’s sky-scraping cliffs and creeks plummeting to the sea from hundreds of metres will stay with you long after you’ve gone home.

Your captain will drop you off at a beachside cafe for lunch and if you’re in luck you may see dolphins, monk seals and birds of prey on the cruise.

Many operators will also stop at a cove to let you spend an hour or so swimming in crystalline rock-pools.

14. Lac de Tolla

Lac de Tolla

Found 30 kilometres inland from Ajaccio, Lac de Tolla is an artificial lake created in the 1950s by an EDF dam.

There are five square kilometres of cool water in a bowl of mountains with chestnut, walnut, holm oak and pine trees on their slopes.

There are campsites around the shore, and a marina in summer renting pedalos, canoes and paddle boards.

Tolla can also be your trailhead for an hike into the Prunelli Gorge, where there are sheer cliffs and glistening rock pools at the foot of cascades.

You could also go by road if you don’t mind hairpin turns over 100-metre drops.

15. Food Excursions

goat's cheese

On Corsica honey has the European Protected Designation of Origin, and if you’re curious about where your food comes from there are seven “miellieries” or apiaries within touching distance of Ajaccio – though one may be enough! You can also take tours of the dairy farms making sheep’s and goat’s cheeses or call in at a farm that makes its own flavoured vinegars and mustards.

Ajaccio also has its own AOC, with vineyards on sunny slopes growing only sciaccarello to make bold red wines with spicy aromas.

The best things to do in Ajaccio

Before revealing all our ideas for things to do and see in Ajaccio, here’s a short video to give you an initial impression.

1. The Bonaparte House

Why visit the maison bonaparte.

The house was classified as a historic monument and became a national museum in 1967 .

Exterior of the Bonaparte house

The Maison Bonaparte museum is a must-see during your stay in Ajaccio. Indeed, the town is deeply marked by its history with the emperor. Napoleon was born here on August 15, 1769, and lived here with his family.

Interior of the Bonaparte house

What’s more, the museum is beautiful. From a purely aesthetic point of view, you’ll succumb to the wealth of paintings, sculptures and decorative elements on display in the various rooms.

At last, we discovered a side of Napoleon we didn’t know, one that isn’t told in history textbooks!

What you will see

Our visit to the museum introduced us to the parents and governess of the young Napoleon. The tour begins on the second floor, where paintings, sculptures and other works of art relating to Napoleon’s childhood and youth are on display. With the help of an audio guide, we retraced his youth and his last visit to Ajaccio in 1799.

The Bonaparte House Museum audioguide

On the second floor, the rooms are decorated according to the wishes of Letizia, his mother. Here you’ll see some of the finest furniture purchased in 1796. Madame Mère’s drawing room is particularly admirable. Following the direction of the tour, you’ll also pass through the study of Napoleon’s father, the birth room, the dining room, the gallery, etc. Several other rooms are dedicated to the Napoleonic legend, featuring historical objects such as paintings, books and sculptures.

Finally, we ended our visit with a visit to the cellars, which contain a variety of agricultural artefacts linked to the Bonapartes’ past as landowners. Among other things, we discovered a reconstructed oil mill.

How much time to allow

We recommend you allow 1h30 to 2h for the visit to the Maison Bonaparte. If you’re an avid reader, you’ll certainly need to allow 2 hours, as there are plenty of informative panels. If you’ve taken the audioguide, the visit is quicker, but you’ll still need to allow at least 1 hour.

2. The Palais Fesch and its imperial chapel

Why visit the palais fesch.

As we entered the Palais Fesch, we were taken aback by the grandeur of the monument. The north wing houses Ajaccio’s municipal library, which we’ll mention later in this article, while the south wing houses the imperial chapel.

Exterior of the Palais Fesch and its imperial chapel

The Palais Fesch, also known as the Musée des Beaux-Arts d’Ajaccio, is one of the city’s major cultural and artistic landmarks. It houses three major collections: Italian painting from the 14th to 18th centuries, the Napoleonic Empire and Corsican painters. Art lovers will be impressed by the beauty of the Italian paintings: from hunting scenes to still lifes, portraits and more. A real feast for the eyes!

Fesch Collection

For history buffs, the museum devotes an entire floor to the Cardinal Fesch collection, which includes a plethora of portraits of members of the Bonaparte family. As you can see, the story of Napoleon’s life plays a key role! You’ll also discover the tombs of the principal members of the imperial family in the imperial chapel.

The tour is divided into 5 stages:

  • 2nd floor: Italian paintings dating from the 14th to 17th centuries,
  • 1st floor: Italian paintings from the 16th to 18th centuries,
  • Ground floor: the Napoleonic department,
  • Ground floor: Corsican paintings,
  • Imperial chapel: imperial tombs.

Corsican painting

You’ll discover mostly paintings, but also statues and various historical objects (medallions, clocks, etc.).

We recommend that you allow between 1h30 and 2h for the visit to the Palais Fesch, which includes the museum and the imperial chapel. It also depends on your level of interest in the various works on display. For lovers of Italian and Corsican painting, or Napoleon worshippers, the visit can easily be extended.

Further information on the Palais Fesch

As mentioned above, the palace comprises three separate buildings: the museum, the library and the chapel. A visit to the Imperial Chapel is included in the price of the museum ticket between May 1 and October 31, 2023. You have to count:

  • Full price: €8,
  • Reduced rate: €5 (students and over-65s).

Opening hours:

  • From November 1 to April 30, the museum is open daily from 9am to 5pm,
  • From May 1 to October 31, the museum is open daily from 9:15 am to 6 pm,
  • Closed from January 1 to 16, Christmas and New Year’s Day.

3. Ajaccio municipal library and heritage room

Why visit the ajaccio library.

The municipal library is located in the north wing of the Palais Fesch. It’s a superb building, inside and out. It owes its renown to its heritage room, which concentrates 3 types of content: the old stock, the legal deposit and the contemporary study stock. The old stock is very rich, with a total of 20,000 books.

Ajaccio outdoor library

We recommend you stop by. Ajaccio’s library is well worth a visit, as it’s a majestic place that takes us back into the distant past. Come and enjoy the central table and the antique books adorning the walls!

Ajaccio library - heritage room

The Fesch heritage library contains priceless treasures:

  • Among the older collections: 29 incunabula (books printed in the early days of printing before the 15th century), 218 manuscripts written between the 16th and 20th centuries, 67 old books on Corsican history, etc.
  • The Bonaparte collection: over 3,000 books dedicated to Napoleon and his family.
  • Legal printing deposit: the library is required to keep every book published on the island for preservation and study.

Old stock from the municipal library

A visit to the heritage library can be a quick affair if you don’t take the time to wander around the heritage room and consult the books. In this case, you can count on just 20 minutes. On the other hand, if you’re passionate about antiquarian books, you’ll need 45min to 1h.

More information on the Ajaccio library

Ajaccio’s municipal library is currently being renovated. If you’d like to visit, we recommend you consult the official website in advance.

Admission is free.

4. Ajaccio harbour and citadel

Why visit the port of ajaccio.

The Tino Rossi marina is very lively. It is home to numerous shops, ice-cream parlours, restaurants and bars. You’ll also find a wide range of sea excursions on offer.

Ajaccio marina

We recommend taking a stroll around the harbor and continuing on to the breakwater. As it is high up, it offers an unobstructed view of the harbor.

Afterwards, you can extend your stroll by walking to the citadel. It has been under renovation since 2021, but is open to the public. Inside the building, you’ll find a summer guinguette, craft stores and art projects.

First, we strolled along the quays to enjoy the superb view of the marina.

On our way, we passed bars and restaurants overlooking the harbor, then walked towards the breakwater. We were pleasantly surprised by the restaurant Le Poséidon, which has a special feature. Installed directly on a boat!

Restaurant Poséidon in the port Tino Rossi

To extend our stroll, we went as far as the citadel to discover the interior of the heritage site.

We recommend you allow 1 hour for this walk, which includes the port, the sea wall and the citadel. If you’re stopping off for a drink along the harbor quays, or at the guinguette in the citadel, you’ll need to budget more.

Port of Ajaccio

The port of Ajaccio also welcomes huge ferries. We were struck by the sheer size of these boats! Tourists disembarking from these ferries have a direct impact on port traffic.

In fact, the flora and fauna of the archipelago are unique. The islands are inhabited only by seabirds: gulls, shearwaters, gulls and more. As far as vegetation is concerned, it’s possible to observe up to 150 different species on Mezu Mare. The most famous of these is the arum mange-mouche, also known as the little dragon eater.

Sanguinaires Islands

The Sanguinaires Islands are also renowned for their mysterious history. In Les lettres de mon moulin , Alphonse Daudet evokes the presence of human life on these wild islands. In the 16th century, men built a Genoese tower on the site of the Mezu Mare lighthouse. In 1806, the island became a sanitary center for coral fishermen returning from Africa.

On the archipelago of the Sanguinaires Islands, you’ll be able to observe:

  • Local flora and fauna,
  • The semaphore at Mezu Mare,
  • The view of the Parata site,
  • The sea and its transparent water.

Sea excursions from Ajaccio

To reach the Sanguinaires islands, we took a sea excursion from Ajaccio. We recommend this activity, which generally lasts between 3 and 4 hours.

The Sanguinaires islands can be visited at dusk. Several sea excursions offer twilight outings. In fact, the scenery is breathtaking when the sun goes down. We highly recommend this memorable experience!

6. Go as far as Pointe de la Parata

Why go all the way to the parata site.

The Pointe de la Parata is a must-see during your stay in Ajaccio. We enjoyed an extraordinary view of the Sanguinaires Islands from the peninsula. Indeed, the Grand Site des îles Sanguinaires et de la pointe de la Parata was awarded the Grand Site de France label in 2017. And we think it’s richly deserved!

Pointe de la Parata and its Genoese tower

Criss-crossed by many hiking trails, the Parata peninsula is an exceptional natural area shaped by wind and sea. The vegetation is lush and the scenery breathtaking. For those who love walking, we climbed up to the Genoese tower of La Parata. We then left the path to get closer to the sea. What a pleasure to hear the lapping of water against rock!

Pointe de la Parata and its Genoese tower

A little tip for sunset lovers: the Pointe de la Parata is an incredible spot where you can take your most beautiful shots at dusk!

From the pointe de la Parata, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Sanguinaires islands. You can also enjoy the Genoese tower, the local flora and fauna, and of course the sea!

View of the Sanguinaires islands from the Parata site

We recommend you allow 1 hour for the tour of Parata. Download the full tour on the official Ajaccio Tourist Office website .

More information on Pointe de la Parata

There are 4 ways to reach the Parata site:

  • By car: 25 minutes from Ajaccio, easy access paid parking.

  • By train from Ajaccio.

Enjoy a privileged view of the Grand Site de la Parata from a cruise boat!

7. Tour the Ajaccio market

Why visit the ajaccio market.

The Ajaccio market is the ideal place to discover Corsican gastronomic specialties. It’s close to the Tino Rossi marina and Place Foch. Gourmets will love this gourmet hall!

Ajaccio market

We loved wandering among the stalls of local specialities, and smelling the aromas of Corsican charcuterie and cheese. The smell of Corsica permeates the market. Sheltered by the covered market, a number of traders offer quality, handcrafted products. Weather permitting, the market also extends outdoors.

Ajaccio outdoor market

Under the gourmet hall:

  • The fishmonger’s, which welcomes local fishermen,
  • Delicatessens,
  • A cheese factory,
  • A wine merchant,
  • A pastry shop,

Following on from these stands, you’ll find other Corsican producers outside the hall.

Corsican charcuterie stand

For those of you with a sweet tooth, a visit to the market can quickly drag on as you stroll past a tempting stall. We recommend you allow 45 minutes to take in the smells from the stalls and taste the local specialities.

Alternatively, a complete tour of the market can be done in just 20 to 25 minutes for the fastest.

More information on the Ajaccio market

If you’d like to visit the Ajaccio market, market days are as follows: Tuesday to Sunday between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m., and Mondays only during the summer months.

The food market is complemented by a fairground market on Saturday and Sunday mornings. You’ll find clothes and costume jewelry.

8. Town Hall and statue of Napoleon

Why go to place foch.

Place Foch is at the heart of life in Ajaccio. Located close to the marina, it is home to Ajaccio Town Hall and the statue of Napoleon. The esplanade is lined with palm trees, and serves as the departure point for the little train we’ll be talking about later in this article. If you take the time to observe the buildings that frame the square, you’ll get a taste of the local architecture.

Napoleon statue in Place Foch

In the upper part of the square, the white marble statue of Napoleon stands proudly, facing the sea. At its feet, you’ll find a fountain with four granite lions guarding the surrounding area.

Now head back down towards the harbour, where you’ll come across a large pink-toned building. This is the Hôtel de Ville, in which the Napoleonic salon (which is unfortunately rarely accessible to the public) is hidden.

Ajaccio Town Hall

Take a look at the Place Foch:

  • The statue of Napoleon as a Roman consul, by Italian sculptor Massimiliano Laboureur, stands on a pedestal adorned with allegorical figures.
  • Ajaccio Town Hall and its colorful touch.
  • Opening onto the marina and its dynamic neighborhood.
  • The departure of the little train from Ajaccio.
  • Restaurants and shops, including the Palmiers bookshop.

We recommend that you allow 20min for a tour of the square and its points of interest. City Hall is not easily accessible, but if you have the opportunity to enter it, you’ll need to allow more time.

Place Foch, view of the statue of Napoleon

More information on the Napoleon statue

The statue atop Place Foch was unveiled on May 5, 1850. It pays tribute to the famous Napoleon Bonaparte. It was part of the collection of Cardinal Fesch, who bequeathed it to his native town in his will. This sculpture, dedicated to the emperor, is a must-see when visiting Ajaccio!

9. The foreigners’ quarter

Why visit the quartier des étrangers.

The Quartier des Étrangers was built in the 19th century to welcome the first tourists to Ajaccio. Along the way, we came across some beautiful period buildings and former luxury hotels. Today, these monuments are used for housing or offices. No worries for the historians among you, you’re bound to meet the famous Corsican emperor several times along the way!

Place de Gaulle and the statue of Napoleon on horseback

Direction Place du Diamant, also known as Place de Gaulle, which is the starting point for the walk. A statue of Napoleon on horseback stands proudly. Take the time to walk around the esplanade, where a view of Ajaccio Bay can be seen. As you stroll along, you’ll never cease to be amazed by the architecture of the Ajaccio period, so keep your eyes peeled!

We recommend downloading the itinerary directly from the official Ajaccio tourist office website . The tour is great for families, couples or even individuals!

Along the way, the Foreigners’ Quarter offers many surprises:

  • The statue of Napoleon in Place de Gaulle,
  • The Lycée Fesch,
  • Cours Grandval,
  • Le Grand Hôtel,
  • Château Conti,
  • The Cyrnos palace,
  • The Anglican Church,
  • The great monument to Napoleon.

Cours Grandval

We recommend you allow 1h to 1h30 to visit the Foreigners’ Quarter in its entirety. There are several benches along the way, so it’s possible to take frequent breaks. Note, however, that the circuit is gently sloping at the start and steeper towards the end. There’s also a staircase at Place d’Austerlitz to climb to the top of the monument to Napoleon.

More information on the Foreigners district

The Foreigners’ Quarter is best visited in fine weather. There’s no possibility of covering up in the rain, but the walk is well worth it! During your walk, you’ll have the chance to soak up Ajaccio’s atmosphere and discover the two main historic arteries in the city center.

10. Ajaccio Cathedral

Why visit ajaccio cathedral.

Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption Cathedral is located in the old town. This religious building, whose architecture forms a Latin cross, faces the sea. The cathedral, the highest point of the Piazza Maria Teresa, stands out for its ochre color and Baroque character.

Ajaccio Cathedral

Classified as a historic monument since October 30, 1906, it now belongs to the Collectivité Territoriale de Corse. From the outside, the church appears relatively sober, without too much decoration. And yet, when we entered the building, we discovered a baroque universe in stark contrast to the exterior.

Inside the cathedral

Once inside, a multitude of details are waiting to be discovered. We recommend that you enter the cathedral – it’s inside that the magic happens!

Once inside Ajaccio Cathedral, you’ll be able to take in the sights:

  • The impressive view of the nave,
  • The marble baptistery on which Napoleon was baptized,
  • The organ built by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll in 1846,
  • The high altar was donated in 1811 by Princess Elisa Bacchiochi, Grand Duchess of Tuscany,
  • The little chapel of the Madonna del Pianto,
  • Eugène Delacroix’s painting Triomphe de la religion ou Vierge au Sacré-Cœur ,
  • The side chapel dedicated to the Virgin of Mercy,
  • Notre-Dame du Rosaire chapel, etc.

Inside the cathedral

We recommend setting aside around 30 minutes to visit the cathedral. The visit can be extended if you have a particular interest in religious buildings.

More about Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption Cathedral

Ajaccio Cathedral is open every day from 8.30am to 11.30am and 2.30pm to 5.45pm, except Sunday afternoons. Please note that visits are not possible during religious services.

More information on excursions

Sea excursions from Ajaccio are very popular. We particularly enjoyed our experience, which combined land and sea. Day trips often include a 1 or 2-hour stopover on land.

12. Visit Ajaccio’s beaches

Why visit ajaccio’s beaches.

Ajaccio is a very popular seaside resort, especially during the summer season. Indeed, the quality of the water makes the town a great place to swim, not to mention the Corsican weather. What’s more, sea temperatures can reach 23.7°C in midsummer!

Barbicaghja Beach

Located mostly outside the city center, Ajaccio’s beaches are particularly popular with tourists. Whether you’re more interested in wild beaches or not, you’ll find what you’re looking for in the surrounding area!

There are several beaches within easy reach of Ajaccio town center:

  • Plage Saint-François: a small beach right in the center of town, ideal for sunbathing without taking the car.
  • Trottel Beach: 2nd closest beach to the city center, perfect for relaxing for a few hours.
  • Barbicaghja beach: small, pleasant beach easily accessible by car, parking spaces along the road.
  • Terre Sacrée beach: beautiful beach topped by the Terre Sacrée milestone, with views of the Sanguinaires islands.
  • Capo di Feno beach: large sandy beach with crystal-clear water, renowned surfing spot.
  • Porticcio beach: large beach accessible by sea shuttle from Ajaccio harbor.

Look out for our dedicated articles on each of Ajaccio’s beaches!

Plage St-François

Depending on your aspirations, you can easily spend a few hours, half a day or even a whole day on one of Ajaccio’s beaches.

More information on Ajaccio beaches

With the exception of the small Plage Saint-François and Plage Trottel in downtown Ajaccio, we recommend that you have a car for easier access to the beaches. Most of them are quite far from the Ajaccio conurbation.

If you opt for a sea excursion departing from Ajaccio, it’s very common for the program to include stopovers in secret coves or beaches!

Don’t wait any longer and book your cruise from Ajaccio!

There are a number of hikes that provide access to unspoilt beaches, including the “sentier des douaniers” from La Parata, which leads to Capo di Feno beach. Once again, we recommend that you have a car at your disposal, as you must first drive to La Parata (25 minutes from downtown Ajaccio) to access this circuit.

Discover the Naporama Museum

Interior Naporama museum

Looking for something to do with your children in Ajaccio? Look no further, we’ve got the answer! The little ones will fall under the spell of the Naporama playmobil museum, which tells the story of Napoleon’s life. Games have been set up for children, and famous playmobils such as Scoobydoo and Maléfique are hidden in certain scenes. Adults too will enjoy this entertaining and enriching experience. We highly recommend it!

Games for children

The museum is really small, as it’s run by an association. Admission costs €4 in cash only. The receptionist also takes care of giving guided tours, depending on the number of visitors at any given time. We recommend that you come at quieter times of the year to take full advantage of its explanations. For more information, visit their official website .

For soccer fans, what could be better than attending an ACA match? AC Ajaccio frequently plays at the Stade François Coty outside Ajaccio city center. Don’t miss the chance to witness a unique sporting event in Corsica! Check out their official website in advance to plan your visit and watch a match live.

What to do near Ajaccio

Visit the city of turtles: a cupulatta.

Why not take a family turtle-watching trip? A Cupulatta, also known as the City of Turtles, is a 2.5-hectare natural site home to 170 species and over 3,000 animals. The park aims to protect and safeguard the turtles, offering them optimal conditions for reproduction and a peaceful life. We loved exploring the reserve and discovering the unique specimens!

Reserve your ticket to avoid queuing!

If you’re a thrill-seeker, we recommend canyoning during your stay in Ajaccio. Throughout southern Corsica, you have access to several canyoning spots more or less secluded inland. Our canyoning trip had a profound effect on our trip to Corsica. There’s nothing like a bit of adrenaline in an exceptional setting!

Canyoning South Corsica

Depending on the time of year you come, canyoning trips are more or less frequent. We went in low season, so it was harder to book a slot. However, the canyon was full of water! During the summer months, water can be scarce.

Discover Capo di Feno: a wild natural area

Capo di Feno is a vast natural area on the outskirts of the Ajaccio conurbation. Comprising a cape and a beach, the site has been Natura 2000 protected since 2011. We loved discovering this wild place! From the Grand Site de la Parata parking lot, it’s a 2h30 round-trip walk along the customs path.

Capo di Feno Beach

Capo di Feno beach is particularly renowned as a great surfing spot. It is very extensive, with white sand and translucent water. But in reality, there are two beaches separated by a field: the more touristy Grand Capo and the lesser-known Petit Capo. From the beach, we had a breathtaking view of the Sanguinaires Islands! However, the only downside is that this natural beach can sometimes be laden with algae.

ajaccio corsica tourism

Ajaccio ( Corsican : Aiacciu ) is the capital of the French Mediterranean island of Corsica , home to 71,000 people (2019). It is a sun-kissed tourist town with frequent visits by cruise ships. It has a boardwalk along its attractive coastline, with excellent restaurants and lots of Napoleon-related sites.

Understand [ edit ]

Although the coastline of Ajaccio and its natural harbour was almost certainly visited many times in antiquity, the development of a proper city did not happen until the late 1400s when the Genoese built a citadel that still stands to this day and serves as a military installation for the French army.

After most of Corsica was conquered by the French in the 1700s, Ajaccio remained a Genoese territory until the late 1760s.

Napoleon Bonaparte (Napoleone di Buonaparte) was born in Ajaccio in 1769 just after the city became the capital of Corsica. Although from mostly Italian-Corsican heritage, Napoleon rose through the ranks of the French military to become the leader of France and then Emperor. For a time he also ruled most of Europe.

Ajaccio was one of the last cities to become French in Europe, but it was the first French city to be liberated in 1943 following the fall of the Third Republic in 1940.

Ajaccio, the birthplace of Napoléon, breathes elegance and sophistication within its pastel-shaded rainbow of pavement cafés, promenades and gracious squares.

Ajaccio is the capital of Corsica and the island's largest city. Its modern history is dominated by the figure of Napoléon, who was born in the city. His presence is everywhere in Ajaccio, yet not in an overpowering sense; indeed the city wears its layers of history with a lightened touch, yet it is still rated as one of the most intriguing stops on the island. This is evidenced in the narrow streets and the lovely, varied architecture, particularly the fabled cathedral. The city also has a beautiful harbour area with numerous boats and yachts, arriving from French ports such as Marseille, Nice and Toulon - something that lends the area a Côte d'Azur feel.

Ajaccio harbour

To the north, the Gulf of Sagone is a vast bay that opens between the gulfs of Ajaccio and Porto. With hillsides cloaked in dense maquis, and beaches flanked by oak and olives it is the ideal base for walkers or beach lovers, away from the hustle and bustle of Ajaccio. The city itself makes a good base however, and there are several good Ajaccio hotels to choose from if you fancy the idea of a break in the capital.

Things to See & Do

  • Ajaccio , the chief town in Corsica sparkles with Mediterranean buzz reminiscent of the Côte d'Azur and is the largest town on the island. His place of birth, Napoléon Bonaparte gave the town international fame and visitors cannot escape his commemorative presence throughout the town. It is an attractive town with an exceptionally mild climate and boasts a wealth of cafés, restaurants and chic shops. The old town is especially charming with a cluster of ancient streets spreading north and south of the Place Foch, which opens out onto the seafront by the old port. The Place de Gaulle forms the town centre. Following on from this is the Cours Napoléon, lined with chic boutiques and brasseries, and running parallel to the beach for almost 2km. There are plenty of places to visit including Napoléon's house ( Maison Bonaparte ), Musée Capitellu, the citadel and Musée Fesch.
  • There is a local produce market held every morning Mon-Sat at Place César-Campinchi providing an ideal scene to capture the essence of local life as you watch the world go by.
  • The sea front promenade along the Route des Sanguinaires is a pleasant place to stroll and leads to some lovely beaches , the least crowded being the furthest along. The Nave Va company run boat trips from the old port near the citadel out to these islands, as well as further afield ( Bonifacio , Porto and the Calanches).
  • North west of Ajaccio is the nearest of the Bonaparte family's country houses. Les Millelli is a stolid plain 18th-century building with a wonderful terraced olive grove that overlooks the gulf (great for picnics). There are other châteaux ruins further along.
  • Heading south around the bay you reach the town of Porticcio , a busy, lively resort with an abundance of shops including many small speciality shops selling locally produced pâtés, saucissons and cheeses. Porticcio has a large expanse of sandy beach with windsurfing, boat hire and a choice of other water sports and beach activities. As you turn a corner on the road south of Porticcio, the golden sands of the huge beach at Agosta Plage stretch ahead. Here it's quieter than Porticcio but with beach activities and good water sports due to the choppier waters in this bay.
  • Sartène is said to be the most Corsican of Corsican towns, and is a brooding place of tall buildings and narrow, cobbled alleyways. Famous for its local wines you can experience the culture at first hand.
  • Long sandy beaches characterise Corsica's largest Gulf, the Bay of Sagone , which stretches 40km down the west coast to the north of Ajaccio. Cargèse is a lovely clifftop village at the northern tip of the bay. Its Greek history has left it with a unique atmosphere today and there is a certain charm to the quiet streets and whitewashed houses. With five beaches within the vicinity it's a great base for a relaxing beach holiday - the Plage de Pero is one of the most spectacular in the area.
  • Cargèse is at the northernmost tip of the bay and is a charming cliff top village with an unusual history and ancestry linked to the Greek Peloponnese. Even today there are both Catholic and Greek Orthodox churches although both are presided over by the same minister. The whole Gulf of Sagone (Corsica's largest gulf) is characterised by long curves of sandy beaches stretching 40km from Capo di Feno up to the Punto di Cargèse. Sagone is further south and thrives as a water-sports centre whilst Tiuccia is tucked into the Gulf of Liscia at the easternmost indent and has a trio of minor historic sights. Two 17th-century Genoese watchtowers and the other, the ruined Castellu di Capraja. It is the most sheltered spot and has a fine golden beach.
  • Aullène is now a relatively remote village of the southern mountains among magnificent scenery. It has fewer than 200 permanent inhabitants today, but once it was a place of importance before any of the modern, faster roads by the coast were built, the only route from Ajaccio to Porto Vecchio went through here. Surrounded by chestnut and pine forests, it is a splendid centre for exploring the mountains.
  • Take the breathtaking walks along the lush green ridge of hills known as the famous ' les Crêtes ', just a short drive from Ajaccio centre.
  • The tortoise park of ' A Cupulatta ' makes a good family day out. Located half an hour away on the N193 in the small village of Vero, the park, which is home to some 150 different species of tortoises and turtles. The site is open every day from 9am to 7pm in the summer and from 10am to 5.30pm during the rest of the year.

Visit Ajaccio (Corsica, France)

Ajaccio, on the west coast of Corsica, is encircled by wood covered mountains to the rear of the town, and the port and citadelle towards the sea, on the Gulf of Ajaccio. The town is popular with tourists for much of the year around due to its consistently warm climate and its sheltered position.

Visit Ajaccio

The centre of Ajaccio is based around the 16th century citadel in the south of the centre and spreads west and north from here: this part of Ajaccio includes the Place Bonaparte and the renaissance cathedral, and continues up to Place Marechal Foch a little to the north, and is the part that is of most interest to visitors.

Pretty colourful houses in centre of Ajaccio

France This Way review: because of its scenic harbour and lively historic centre Ajaccio is one of our favourite towns in Corsica and should be included as a stop on your 'Tour of Corsica'!

Start your visit at the citadel, a substantial 16th century fortified building with a large (dry) moat. You will sometimes see mules in the moat, or perhaps a goat sat nonchalantly on the defensive walls! You can not enter the citadel because it is still in use by the military, but it is situated betwen the pleasure port to the east and a beach to the west, two of the highlights in the town.

The beach (the Plage Saint-Francois) in Ajaccio centre is a pleasant sandy beach below the walls and while it can be crowded it is very convenient if you are staying in the town centre.

The harbour area is very picturesque its with cafes and boats and tall colourful houses. Walk to the end of the jetty (the Jetée de la citadelle) for a nice view across the harbour to the town.

North-west of the citadel you can explore Ajaccio old town. Centred south of Place Marechal Foch the historic centre has narrow streets lined with attractive pastel coloured houses, typical of Mediterranean towns and very picturesque.

In the old town you can also see (and visit) Napoleons birthplace, the Maison Bonaparte, an impressive orange town house. Note that it was in the cathedral here, the Cathedrale Notre Dame de la Misericorde, that Bonaparte was baptised.

You will also want to continue north from Place Marechal Foch along the Rue Cardinal Fesch: this is one of the most attractive streets in the centre and also has a wide range of shops.

A few hundred metres along this street you can see some of the most important monuments in Ajaccio: the Fesch Palace (now a museum), the Imperial Chapel and the historic Bibliotheque (take a look inside the library to see the shelves heaving with ancient books).

Ajaccio Cathedral

There are a large number of cafes, bars and restaurants around Ajaccio, and it is in these that you will find the true town - the laid-back casual approach to life that Ajaccio seems to adopt so well. Place Foch especially is a very popular place to sit under shady trees and do some people-watching.

The rest of central Ajaccio merits an explore as well, to see the grand prefecture (local government office) and the Quartier des Etrangers ('foreigners quarter'). The Ajaccio Office of Tourism is on the Boulevard du Roi Jérôme a short distance north of Place Marechal Foch.

Napoleon in Ajaccio

Above all, Ajaccio's claim to fame is as the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte. In the town you can visit Napoleons birthplace, now the National Bonaparte Museum and the caves where he played as a child. Statues of Napoleon abound and there are streets and places named in his honour. The most impressive monument is the one in the Jardins de Casone.

Located 200 metres north of Place Foch, the Fesch Museum has a highly regarded collection of Italian Renaissance paintings, originally collected by Napoleon's uncle and the Maison Bonaparte where he lived is perhaps the most visited attraction in Ajaccio

Maison Bonaparte

North of the town centre there is a walk along the hills out of Ajaccio (the Route des Cretes) that is well worth following for the views across the town and coast. It is signposted from the Bois des Anglais: park in Place d'Austerlitz.

Other highlights and places to visit nearby

- Visit the lovely botanical gardens and olive groves covering more than 10 hectares around the Bonapartes country house at Les Milelli, five kilometres north-west of Ajaccio

- The region outside the town has several highly rated beaches, including those to the west of the town around the Capo-di-Feno and the resort of Porticcio to the south. Closer to hand there are several beaches along the Route des Iles-Sanguinaires, west of the town.

- A popular boat trip that starts from Ajaccio is to visit the Isles Sanguinaires . These are an unmissable highlight of a visit even if you don't take the boat trip.

- Another site not to be missed is the prehistoric site at Filitosa, 40 kilometres south of Ajaccio.

10 things to do in Ajaccio

Immerse yourself in the corsican capital.

In Ajaccio, everything – or nearly everything – is centered around the island's child prodigy, none other than Napoleon Bonaparte, who influenced both the history of Corsica and France. It's almost impossible to wander through the streets without coming face to face with a statue or monument associated in one way or another with this illustrious figure.

However, the imperial city is also a vibrant capital with a port and colorful marketplace, where you can meet welcoming locals and discover a number of religious buildings housing unexpected treasures. If the countryside is more your thing, why not take to the open air or gain some altitude and discover everything that the surrounding area has to offer? Singer Tino Rossi once said that in Ajaccio, time goes by as if in a dream. Come and find out for yourself with these 10 things to do in Ajaccio.

Napoleon's Ajaccio: from Place Foch to Maison Bonaparte

An open-air tribute.

ajaccio corsica tourism

Napoleon Bonaparte's Ajaccio, from Place Foch to Maison Bonaparte, highlights one of France's most well-known historic figures who was born in Ajaccio in 1769. The city streets that were once his childhood playground are today imbued with his presence. The Corsican capital, which owes its status to its golden child, has all the components necessary to discover the history of France's first emperor.

Visit the house of his birth, now the Musée National de la Maison Bonaparte (National Museum of the Bonaparte House) dedicated to the illustrious family. Next, continue your journey and admire the statues and monuments placed in his honor (Place Foch, Place Général-de-Gaulle and Place d’Austerlitz). And in June and August, don't week miss Napoleonic week with Napoleon-themed days.

Fesch Museum

Corsica through the eyes of its artists.

ajaccio corsica tourism

The Fesch Museum (Le Palais Fesch) lets you discover paintings by Italian masters such as Titian and Botticelli along with works by local artists whose drawings and paintings are extremely well represented here. This is the perfect opportunity to unravel the mystery of the Corsican spirit through the work of local artists, all while enjoying a moment of culture and contemplation.

Portraits of the Bonaparte family can also be found in a dedicated area. In keeping with Napoleon's legacy, this building, found on the seafront, was commissioned by Napoleon's maternal uncle, Joseph Fesch, whose ambition was to educate the young inhabitants of the island in intellectual and artistic pursuits.

A tour of the harbor, a fusion of authenticity.

ajaccio corsica tourism

A tour of the harbor shows how the history and face of Ajaccio are intrinsically linked to the sea in the Corsican capital. Enjoyment can be found at every hour of the day. At sunrise, you'll see the fishermen returning, nets full of wriggling fish; during the day, watch the comings and goings of yachts and rustic boats, or the regulars in the cafe; and at nightfall, experience the warm and friendly atmosphere well into the early hours.

Come and admire the shimmering colors of the mussels against a sparkling backdrop and listen to the gentle sound of boats knocking together.

Shopping at the market

A stroll among flavors and fragrances.

ajaccio corsica tourism

Go shopping at a local market to get a real flavor of the town and its inhabitants. The main market (Le grand marché) is a local institution and can be found in Place Foch. It's open every morning (except Mondays from November to March) and is brimming with specialties for you to taste or to take home, while you take in the ambience of the capital.

Wines, jellies, hand-crafted biscuits and regional cheeses – everything's here so that you, and your friends and family at home, can explore Corsica through the medium of taste (fresh produce can be vacuum packed for transportation). And if you're able to do a little cooking during your stay, why not try some lovely fish, freshly caught that morning?

The luxurious Foreigners' Quarter

La belle époque in ajaccio.

ajaccio corsica tourism

The luxurious Foreigners' Quarter (quartier des Étrangers) was created to accommodate mid-19th-century tourists – primarily English, German and Swiss – who started to flock to Ajaccio for the winter. Luxury hotels and other buildings emerged, today housing offices or apartments.

A tour of this former vacation quarter will take you on a journey back through time to a golden age. Start the tour at Cours Granval and admire the façade and gardens of the Grand Hôtel. A little farther on, Château Conti and Cyrnos Palace rise majestically. Other landmarks include Villa de Gregorio, Villa Costa and the Anglican church.

Location: Cours Grandval, 20000 Ajaccio, France

Imperial Chapel

A symbolic place.

ajaccio corsica tourism

The Imperial Chapel (La Chapelle Imperiale) is next to the Fesch Palace (Palais Fesch) and houses the tombs of the Bonaparte family. Among others, Napoleon's parents, Charles and Letizia Bonaparte, are buried here in accordance with the wishes of Joseph Fesch, the cardinal to whom the town owes the Fesch Museum. Classified as a historic monument, this limestone building was built in 1857 on the initiative of Napoleon III.

A painter from Ajaccio was commissioned to decorate the vaulted ceilings using a range of gray colors to resemble marble, as well as exceptional trompe l'oeils. The dome that sits atop the building's Latin cross plan acts as a skylight, enhancing the chapel and enshrining it in a soft, muted light, conducive to contemplation.

Ajaccio Cathedral

A hidden treasure.

ajaccio corsica tourism

Ajaccio Cathedral, although modest in size, is nonetheless spectacular once inside. Built at the end of the 16th century, it was where Napoleon Bonaparte was baptised in 1711 before being classed as a historic monument. Behind the orange façade, you'll discover a superb high altar, a gift from Napoleon's sister, as well as a number of chapels on either side of the Latin cross plan.

In the Chapel of the Madonna of Pianto, you can admire a painting by Eugène Delacroix titled 'La Vierge au Sacré-Cœur'. The second chapel is dedicated to the patron saint of the imperial city, Notre Dame de la Miséricorde. Look out for the trompe l'oeil frescoes and organs.

Place de Gaulle

The beating heart of the capital.

ajaccio corsica tourism

Place de Gaulle, at the intersection of the old town and the more recent districts, benefits from an unobstructed view across the Gulf of Ajaccio. In the center, you'll see a bronze statue of Napoleon Bonaparte on horseback, wearing a toga and surrounded by his 4 brothers. However, it is named after General de Gaulle in commemoration of the town's liberation during the Second World War.

It is also the central hub for the little shopping streets, with their many bars and restaurants, and hosts year-round concerts and activities, including the Christmas market. The locals enjoy a game of petanque here, while their children make the most of the long malecon where they can ride their bikes or scooters.

Hamlets of the inland region

Look out for some real gems.

ajaccio corsica tourism

The hamlets of the inland region offer unmissable cultural and natural treasures if you have some spare time and want to get a little fresh air while discovering another side of this region. You'll find a real mix of what Corsica has to offer with small medieval villages, hiking trails through the scrubland, rivers, waterfalls and even historic ruins.

Head off to Bastelica with its superb fountains and make the most of the magnificent landscape dotted with pozzines (waterholes found typically in Corsica). After this, why not get some fresh air on Vitalaca lake (Lac de Vitalaca) before heading to the village of Tulla, with its dizzying panorama.

A little trip to the Blood Islands

Change of scenery at the gates of the capital.

ajaccio corsica tourism

A trip to the Blood Islands showcases their rich flora and fauna as well as their remarkable architectural heritage. The legendary Archipelago of the Blood Islands (Archipel des Îles Sanguinaires), as described by Alphonse Daudet, lies off the Pointe de la Parata. This collection of 4 islands owes its red color to the porphyry rock and constitutes a sanctuary for marine birds (such as yellow-legged gulls) and even dolphins.

Architectural highlights include the Square Tower (Tour Carrée) that dates back to 1550, the semaphore dating from 1865, the lighthouse dedicated to the aforementioned poet built in 1845, and the Genoise Tower (Tour Genoise) built in 1608. Book a cruise and discover the island either by day or on an evening cruise where you can watch the sunset accompanied by Corsican wines, a buffet and guitar music as an added bonus.

Ajaccio Cruise Port

The port of Ajaccio is nestled in the Gulf of Ajaccio and is located within a short walking distance (approximately 0.5 km/0.3 miles) from downtown Ajaccio.

Ajaccio cruise terminal ( Gare Maritime in French) is situated at Quai L’Herminier , located between a charming marina and a small fishing port (Port de Plaisance et de Pêche Tino Rossi) in the southern part. The cruise terminal is small and offers basic facilities such as telephones, restrooms, and a taxi rank.

The ferry terminal , located right next to the cruise terminal, offers daily ferry trips to mainland France (Marseille, Nice, Toulon) and occasionally to Italy (Porto Torres – Sardinia).

Major cruise lines sailing to the cruise port Ajaccio include Royal Caribbean International, Azamara, Oceania Cruises, Holland America Line, Celebrity Cruises, Virgin Voyages, Seabourn Cruise Line, and Cunard Line .

Getting Around Port Ajaccio

  • Ajaccio city center is easily explored on foot. Upon exiting the terminal, turn left and after a few hundred meters you’ll reach the city’s main landmarks, shops and eateries. The area is flat and accessible to people with walking difficulties/wheelchair users.
  • The currency in Corsica (France) is EURO (€). Credit cards and local currency are widely accepted.
  • The main shopping areas in Ajaccio downtown are centered around Rue Fesch, Rue Bonaparte, and Quai Napoleon. Some must-try items of interest include Corsican wines, cheeses and souvenirs related to Napoleon Bonaparte.
  • The majority of shops, banks, information services and businesses are open all day (typically from 8 am/9 am to 7 pm) Monday through Friday. However, some shops may be closed from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm during lunch break. Some shops may be closed on Monday mornings, opening during afternoon hours only.
  • The Tourist Information Center is located at 3, boulevard du Roi Jérôme, near the main square Place Foch, approximately 250 meters south of Ajaccio cruise terminal (upon exiting the terminal, turn left and you’ll reach it in less than 5 minutes’ walk).
  • A taxi rank is available outside the terminal. Taxis can be quite expensive and feel free to negotiate the price. The drivers may not speak English as the official language in Corsica is French.
  • Public transport is available. Ajaccio bus station (Gare Routière d’Ajaccio) is located right outside the cruise terminal and the buses stop around the city. However, the buses to more remote places on the island are not that frequent, so make sure you check the up-to-date timetable from the local Tourist Office.

1. Ajaccio Cathedral

The Cathedral of the Assumption of Saint Mary ( Cathédrale Notre-Dame de l’Assomption de Ajaccio in French) was built in the 16th century and is one of the most iconic historic landmarks located in the heart of Ajaccio’s old town.

Dedicated to ‘La Madonuccia’, or Little Madonna, the city’s patron saint who is believed to have spared the town from the plague, the cathedral is famous for Napoleon Bonaparte’s marble baptismal font, where he was baptized in 1771.

Inside the Chapel of the Madonna of Pianto, visitors can admire “The Triumph of Religion”, the famous painting by Eugène Delacroix.

2. Bonaparte House

Maison Bonaparte is the house where Napoleon Bonaparte was born and raised. The house was almost continuously owned by members of the Bonaparte family from 1682 to 1923, including the legendary French military leader who was born here on August 15, 1769.

Today, the house serves as a national museum where you can explore portraits, documents, the original furniture and memorabilia that belonged to the Bonaparte family.

3. Place Foch

Foch Square or Place du Foch is a beautiful tree-lined town square facing the harbor front. The square is dominated by the building of Hôtel de Ville , the town hall that nowadays houses Salon napoléonien where you can find various Napoleonic paintings, statues and memorabilia of the imperial family.

The square is known for the statue of Napoleon wearing a Roman toga, sitting above a fountain of four lions. Here, you can find numerous cafes and eateries overlooking the charming marina.

Statue of Napoleon, Place Foch, Ajaccio

4. Place du Gaulle

Piazza de Gaulle is the vast central square in the city boasting incredible sea views and overlooking the beautiful Plage Saint-François. The square features the Monument to Napoleon and His Brothers (Monument à Napoléon et ses Frères) where Napoleon is dressed as the Emperor of Rome, surrounded by his four brothers.

5. Cours Napoléon

Cours Napoléon is the main shopping street that starts north of Place du Gaulle and runs parallel to the harbour. Here, you’ll find clothing stores, souvenir shops, eateries, cafes, hotels, pharmacies and everything you may need for your stay in Ajaccio. This street is not a pedestrian-only zone, so beware of vehicles.

6. Citadel of Ajaccio

Citadelle d’Ajaccio was built on a strategic site by the Genoese in 1492 to protect the city from attacks coming from the sea. Today, you can wander around its ramparts, enjoy stunning views of the Gulf of Ajaccio, or even sunbathe on the small beach below the fortress.

Citadelle d'Ajaccio

7. Place d’Austerlitz and Grotte Napoleon

Place d’Austerlitz is the place where, according to the legend, Napoleon liked to play as a child. Grotte Napoleon refers to the large sheltered rocks behind the square where he used to play and dream of conquest and glory, fascinated by the great characters of history.

Nowadays, the square is dominated by another impressive statue of Napoleon standing on a white granite pyramid, erected in 1938. The monument is known as Monument commémoratif de Napoléon 1er , or Le Casone , and depicts Napoleon in a military uniform he wore in the Battle of Austerlitz. This monument is located around 1.5 km/0.9 miles (a 20-minute walk) from Ajaccio port.

Note : There is also a cultural and interpretation center “La Grotte Napoleon” located on 4 Rue Saint-Charles in Ajaccio downtown. This center offers a cultural, visual and tasting experience where you’ll have an insight into Napoleon’s life. Don’t mix it with Grotte Napoleon on Place d’Austerlitz.

8. Fesch Museum

Fesch Museum (Musée Fesch) is the city’s finest art museum housed in Palais Fesch , a remarkable palace that belonged to Napoleon’s uncle, Joseph Fesch. The museum boasts a vast collection of Italian paintings including works by European old masters and features Chapelle Impériale which was the Bonapartes’ funeral chapel.

Napoleon’s parents, Carlo and Letizia, and other family members are buried in the crypt. Fesch Museum is located right across from the cruise terminal.

9. Saint-François Beach

Plage Saint-François is a beautiful sandy city beach located near the Citadel and Place du Gaulle, only a 10-minute walk from the Ajaccio cruise terminal. The wide beach is backed by a palm-lined promenade on Boulevard Lantivy and is easily accessible on foot.

Other popular beaches are Trottel Beach (a 5-minute drive from the terminal), Marinella Beach (a 15-minute drive), Ricanto Beach (a 10-minute drive), Porticcio Beach (a 15-minute drive), and others. Cruise lines normally offer shore excursions/transfers to some beaches for an additional fee.

Saint-François Beach, Ajaccio

10. Sanguinaires islands

Known as Îles Sanguinaires and Archipel des Sanguinaires in French, the Sanguinaires islands are an archipelago of four tiny rocky islands of magmatic origin composed of dark and light rocks, located at the entrance to the Gulf of Ajaccio, just off the coast of Corsica.

The islands are home to colonies of seabirds out of which more than 150 species inhabit Mezu Mare , the main island known for a scenic 19th-century lighthouse (Phare des îles Sanguinaires).

While there, you can admire the most spectacular views of the Corsican coastline and the Mediterranean Sea from a couple of viewpoints, including Pointe de la Parata where you can visit Tour de la Parata ( La tour génoise de la Parata), a Genoese tower dating from the 16th century.

Translated into English, Îles Sanguinaires means “The Bloody Islands” due to their rich and mysterious past, so a good way to visit this place would be on a guided tour. Boat tours from Ajaccio are also a popular way of visiting this incredible place.

On this unique journey, you can discover authentic Corsican villages, the breathtaking Lake Tolla, the Prunelli River, and other natural beauties of the island while learning about its fascinating past. Prunelli Gorges is situated northeast of Ajaccio, approximately a 40-minute drive from the port.
