Review: Akiba’s Trip: Undead and Undressed Almost Gets It Right
Akiba’s Trip is one of those games that’s hard to forget about, at least conceptually. It’s a game where the goal is to punch people in the jeans so hard that they fall off. It’s utterly absurd; a joke concept that may be tough to stretch to a full game, and yet the team at Acquire tried to do that.
Akiba’s Trip: Undead and Undressed is the second time they attempted the concept. The first game was a former Japan exclusive that eventually got a remastered worldwide release as Akiba’s Trip: Hellbound and Debriefed . Undead and Undressed , however, did get a worldwide release the first time around, releasing in the West for the PlayStation Vita in 2014. Now, almost 10 years later, it’s getting a Director’s Cut remaster for modern systems. So the question is, how well does the sequel hold up after all this time?
So let’s get this out of the way. Akiba’s Trip is weird. Not just because of its concept, but its execution is all over the place. One moment the game feels like it wears its concept on its sleeve, playing it up for all its absurdity. Then in the next moment, it’s tripping over its own pants with awkward dialogue and clunky gameplay.

If you’re unfamiliar with Akiba’s Trip , here’s a quick rundown of the plot. You play as a generic protagonist named Nanashi by default. He wakes up in a strange lab after responding to the reddest of red flag job adverts. He’s been turned into a Synthister, a violent emotional vampire. However, he gets rescued by a mysterious girl named Shizuku who helps him escape and shares her blood with him to prevent him from losing his humanity.
Now Nanashi, Shizuku, and his friends in the Akiba Freedom Fighters are heading out to stop the Synthister menace plaguing Akihabara. Of course, the best way to defeat them is to remove all their clothes so they can be burned away by their vampiric weakness to sunlight.
The process of doing this, however, is poorly executed. Combat involves attacking an opponent’s legs, torso or head in order to do damage to the clothing or accessories in that area. With enough damage, Nanashi or his friends can grab the shirt or hat or whatever and remove them. Remove all clothing items and they’re defeated.
This whole system is clunky to control. Fights are often against large groups, and limited dodge and inconsistent targeting can often make it tricky to position yourself in a way that you’re not getting punched in the back all the time. It’s also painfully repetitive. Every fight has the exact same rhythm, and I never really felt like I could mix up combos all that much. It says a lot that combat improves a lot when you unlock the team-up ability. This often causes so much instant damage it feels like it skips most of the fighting.
Not that things are much better out of combat. You get a decent chunk of Akiba to explore, including multiple real stores to visit and buy assorted items from. This would be great if you weren’t wandering into a loading screen every five seconds. Akiba has been split into multiple tiny regions all sectioned away from each other, with the most egregious problem being Main Street split into four separate corners.
These tiny locations also add to the problems with combat, as I frequently found myself backed into corners within the transition points. Thankfully, area transition is usually locked out while in combat, so this doesn’t lead to interruptions. However, the camera shift that indicates the transition does still happen, making it much harder to see what you’re doing.
While the first game had these problems, it could be attributed to its origins on the PSP. However, Undead and Undressed started out on the Vita, a system that boasted Gravity Rush as one of its most prominent games. That was a game with a seamless open world that Akiba’s Trip could have done well to emulate.
Where Akiba’s Trip fares a little better, however, is in its writing. There’s a satirical edge to much of the game’s dialogue, acting as a celebration and brutal takedown of otaku culture in equal measure. After all, the game starts with the protagonist taking a sketchy job offer simply because they pay in figurines. This is just a fraction of the self-referential humor about the obsessive nature of otaku. An obsessive nature that makes them a perfect target for a surreal mission to turn their entire Tokyo hangout into a hive of energy vampires. It’s all delightfully silly and it knows it.
Of course, there are times where it walks the line between satirical and just bad. On one hand, the cosplay sequence where the normally serious and distant Shizuku gets super into the hottest anime is genuinely funny. On the other hand, the awkward dialogue of the protagonist’s little sister is generally obnoxious to put up with. It’s a huge tonal problem that runs through the whole game.
Akiba’s Trip is a real mixed bag of an experience. It’s clear there was potential here with some of the writing, and the combat has a solid foundation that it fails to build on properly. It reminds me a little of Deadly Premonition , a game that managed to do so much wrong and yet ended up being a strangely compelling experience. Akiba’s Trip doesn’t quite pull off the same feat, but frequently feels like it could get close. It just never quite comes together as a cohesive whole.
Akiba’s Trip: Undead and Undressed is not a game that has aged well. Its combat is repetitive, its map is too restrictive and its dialogue sometimes leans into the worst tropes too sincerely to be called parody. However, it’s clear that there is an audience for this out there, or it wouldn’t have gotten this remaster. If you can put up with the game’s many issues, it may be possible to lose yourself in the absurdity of its concept and enjoy its more successful satirical moments.
Akiba’s Trip: Undead and Undressed Director’s Cut is out now for Nintendo Switch, PS4 and PC.
After being lured into a trap by the promise of rare character goods, aimless otaku Nanashi finds himself transformed into one of the walking undead.
However, he is spared the worst of his fate by the bloody kiss of a mysterious young woman named Shizuku. Together with the rest of his companions in an organization unofficially dubbed the “Akiba Freedom Fighters,” Nanashi must uncover the truth behind a plague of violent, antisocial energy vampires and save the Japanese electronics mecca of Akihabara before it is overrun.
Nintendo Switch version reviewed,
Akiba’s Trip: Undead & Undressed has not aged well, but if you can put up with the game’s issues, you can lose yourself in its absurdity
- I will admit there was some nostalgia for me here, as I did visit Akiba around the time of the game's original release.
- There’s even a mission where Nanashi gets cornered by maids in a side street, which was alarmingly similar to a real experience I had.
- It was only one maid in real life though, not a whole squad of them. And no one got stripped in the street. Thankfully.

NOTE: Care will be taken to identify which dialogue options and content are only for the Director's Cut DLC. If you don't have the Director's Cut DLC, you cannot do Kati's route or the DLC side missions. Additionally, we do not have access to the hidden affection values for choices that affect Kati. The affection values for the other characters were found in the official strategy guide released in Japan prior to the release of the Director's Cut DLC.
Mission 00: Prologue
Pre-fight dialogue.
A few notes about the pre-fight dialogue prompts for this battle:
- "Whatever, just give me my figurines!"
- "Dammit, just give me my figurines already!"
- "Look, just give me the damned figurines!"
- "No figurines, no deal. Good night to you, sir!"
- "Nobody ever reads the fine print!"
None of these pre-fight dialogue options increase anyone's affection. Pick any choice you want.
In your first playthrough, this battle serves as a combat tutorial. Follow the on-screen prompts to learn the combat mechanics for entering combat, basic attacks, and unblockable attacks. The on-screen prompts won't change until you've successfully executed the technique it's teaching you. The battle is over when you've completed the tutorial.
In NG+, you still have to do the fight but you don't have to repeat the combat tutorial. The battle is over when either the three accompanying synthisters are completely disrobed or Zenya takes a lot of damage. Zenya's durability is extremely high and he cannot be disrobed in this battle though, so you should focus on disrobing the synthisters.
Nanashi's clothes cannot be destroyed or removed in this battle.
Ally: Shizuku
Post-Fight Dialogue
The post-fight dialogue doesn't increase anyone's affection. Pick any dialogue choices you want.
You start the game with 10,000 yen. This is enough money to buy a weapon. You may want to stop by NEWNEYS in Radio Kaikan Area and buy a weapon during your first playthrough. These weapons have higher attack power than any you'll find for a while. Broom is the strongest weapon you can get right now. Don't forget to equip whatever weapon you buy.
Mission 01: To the Freedom Fighter Base MOGRA
The pre-fight dialogue doesn't increase anyone's affection. Pick any dialogue choices you want.
In the first playthrough, this battle teaches you about targeting different pieces of clothing, stripping clothes off enemies, and straightening your own clothes out to heal them. Victory is achieved by disrobing both enemies.
Chain strips are not allowed in this battle until NG+.
In NG+, you skip the tutorial. Victory is achieved by disrobing both enemies.
Partner: Shizuku
Weapon Sets
Return to mogra.
After returning to MOGRA, a cut scene will play with more dialogue prompts.
At the seventh dialogue prompt, pick who you'd like to visit the Battle Arena with:
- Shizuku's affection +5
- Shizuku will be your ally for the next mission
- Tohko's affection +20
- Tohko will be your ally for the next mission
- This is a neutral choice in the base game.
- If Director's Cut DLC is installed: Kati's affection +?? (unknown value)
- You'll fight alone for the next mission
You'll fight the same enemies regardless of who you choose to go with. If this is your first playthrough, you might want to pick Tohko.
Mission 02: Off to the Battle Arena
After leaving MOGRA, you now have access to Main Street NE, Main Street NW, Main Street SE, Main Street SW, Side Streets, Junk Street, and Battle Arena. The other areas are still inaccessible.
In the base game, the pre-fight dialogue doesn't increase anyone's affection. Pick any dialogue choices you want.
If the Director's Cut DLC is installed and you chose previously to go with Kati, the following choice at the first dialogue prompt increases Kati's affection:
- Kati's affection +?? (unknown value)
During your first playthrough, this battle teaches you about chain strips. As a rule, you should go for chain strips whenever possible. They give you bonus experience points and you can get underwear from enemies if you chain strip seven pieces of clothing at one time and completely disrobe at least one enemy in the process (the background briefly changes color when you've accomplished this).
In NG+, just defeat all enemies.
Partner: Shizuku, Tohko, or no one, depending on the choice you made at MOGRA
There are no post-fight dialogue prompts after this battle.
In the base game, the dialogue at MOGRA doesn't increase anyone's affection. Pick any dialogue choices you want.
If the Director's Cut DLC is installed, the following choice at the second dialogue prompt increases Kati's affection:
Mission 03: A Stranger on Junk Street
In your first playthrough, this battle will teach you about counters. Hold block and press attack while an enemy is attacking to counter them. This doesn't work for unblockable attacks. Counters aren't particularly necessary in Easy mode but they are useful in harder difficulties.
The dialogue at MOGRA doesn't increase anyone's affection. Pick any dialogue choices you want.
Mission 04: A Favor For Your Sister
Side missions available.
Side Mission 01: Adorable Little Sister's Request
- This is the only side mission that isn't optional. You'll complete this side mission now.
There is no combat in this mission.
Accept the "Adorable Little Sister's Request" mission from the Side Missions menu.
Talk to Shop Employee outside K-BOOKS located at Side Streets. He'll give you "Cosplay Sewing Recommendations". Return back to Sister's Room and speak with Nana to complete the mission. You can fast travel to Sister's Room from the map menu (it's underneath MOGRA on the map).
After you complete this mission, Nana will offer her services.
"For synthesis" provides the following options:
- This is where you'll upgrade your weapon and clothing.
- This is where you can sell anything you don't want.
"To talk" provides a minigame. See the Minigames for details.
"About partnering up" will have Nana join you.
You can also talk to any other girl at any time to partner up with them. However, partnering up with a girl will halt your mission progression because the game won't allow you to bring the wrong girl into mission battles.
Nana gives you a Striped T-Shirt with 20 durability. Just like with weapons, you should keep an eye out for stronger clothing to equip during your first playthrough.
There are no dialogue prompts after returning to MOGRA.
Mission 05: Patrol the Side Streets with Shizuku
Side Mission 02: She Wants the D... on D
Side Mission 03: Silent Mode
Side Mission 04: The Realest Unreal
Side Mission 05: Otaku: Before and After
One of the enemies from the previous battle drops a weapon with 40 attack. If this is your first playthrough, this is likely a stronger weapon than what you've currently got equipped.
Mission 06: Rin's Street Performance
At the first dialogue prompt, the following choice increases Rin's affection:
- Rin's affection +5
At the second dialogue prompt, the following choice increases Rin's affection:
Don't worry about increasing Rin's affection unless you've chosen her route for this playthrough.
Partner: Tohko
Mission 07: Shopping with Kati on the Side Streets
Side Mission 06: Mission: Sister's Wish
- This is Sister Mission 1 (don't skip this if you want Nana's ending)
Side Mission 07: The InDoors XP Challenge
Side Mission 08: Synthister Hunter
DLC Side Mission 01: A Fairy's Forgotten Music Box
There is no combat in this mission. In the base game, the dialogue in this mission doesn't increase anyone's affection.
If the Director's Cut DLC is installed, the following choice at the first dialogue prompt increases Kati's affection:
Go to Side Streets and view the cut scene. When it's done, visit UD+ for another cut scene.
If the Director's Cut DLC is installed, at UD+ the following choice at the first dialogue prompt increases Kati's affection:
If the Director's Cut DLC is installed, at UD+ the following choice at the third dialogue prompt increases Kati's affection:
Side Mission 09: The Unseeable Lens
The first dialogue prompt gives you the choice of who to partner up with for the next mission:
- Shizuku's affection +5
- You'll accompany Shizuku to Junk Street
- Tohko's affection +15
- You'll accompany Tohko to Main Street NE
- Choose this if you're trying to reach Shion's route
Regardless of your choice, the next battle is fought against the same enemies. If you choose to go by yourself, you'll partner with Shion for the next battle.
Mission 08: Patrol... 08A - Junk Street with Shizuku 08B - Main Street Northeast with Tohko 08C - the Radio Kaikan Area Alone
If you picked Shizuku or Tohko, there aren't any pre-fight dialogue prompts.
If you picked going by yourself, the following choice at the second dialogue prompt increases Shion's affection:
- Shion's affection +15
Partner: Shizuku, Tohko, or Shion, depending on the choice you made at MOGRA
Regardless of who you chose for this mission, there are no post-fight dialogue prompts.
Side Mission 10: Overzealous Fanboy
Side Mission 11: Proxy Animu
One of the enemies from the previous battle has a chance to spawn with a bat with 70 attack. If they spawned with the bat, you should pick this weapon up when they're defeated. If this is your first playthrough, this bat is likely stronger than the weapon you have equipped currently.
At the third dialogue prompt, the following choice increases Rin's affection:
Mission 09: Search for Shizuku
Side Mission 12: Sister's Wish 2
- This is Sister Mission 2 (don't skip this if you want Nana's ending)
Side Mission 13: Beware the Power of the Plip
Side Mission 14: High Level Cosplayer
Side Mission 15: Starman-Crossed Lovers
If this is your first playthrough, visit Nana and enhance your weapon as much as you can. The next fight can be tricky and take a while if your weapon is weak.
There are no pre-fight dialogue prompts before this battle.
Zenya cannot be stripped. Damaging him enough causes the next cut scene to start. Zenya always has the same equipment for this battle, so there are no weapon sets to list.
In NG+, you have access to the unison strip move. Using a unison strip makes the fight much easier.
Partner: Shizuku
The following choice at the dialogue prompt increases Rin's affection:
- Rin's affection increases+5
The third dialogue prompt lets you choose who you want to visit Battle Arena with:
- You'll accompany Shizuku to the Battle Arena
- Tohko's affection +15
- You'll accompany Tohko to the Battle Arena
- Shion's affection +10
- You'll accompany Shion to the Battle Arena
Mission 10: Train at the Battle Arena

Side Mission 17: Common Courtesy
Side Mission 18: Magi's Secret Experiment
This battle takes place in two parts.
The first fight is against the girl you chose at MOGRA.
The second fight is against a single opponent. If this is your first playthrough, this fight teaches you about unison strips. Execute a unison strip to win this fight.
In NG+, just defeat the enemy.
There are no weapon sets to list for either fight.
There are no dialogue prompts when you return to MOGRA.
Mission 11: Meet Up with Everyone by the Station
There is no combat in this mission. In the base game, none of the dialogue prompts increase anyone's affection.
Visit Radio Kaikan and view the cut scene. When it's over, head to Junk Street for the next mission.
Mission 12: Patrol with Shizuku
Side Mission 19: Artlien Wars
The pre-fight dialogue prompt doesn't increase anyone's affection. Pick any dialogue choice you want.
The following choice at the dialogue prompt increases Shizuku's affection:
- Shizuku's affection increases+5
One of the enemies in the previous fight drops a weapon with 100 attack. If this is your first playthrough, this is likely stronger than the weapon you've got equipped currently.
You'll fight Zenya again in the next mission. Make sure you have your strongest gear equipped and enhance your weapon as much as you can.
Side Mission 20: Mission: Sister's Wish 3
- This is Sister Mission 3 (don't skip this if you want Nana's ending)

About This Game
Key features, mature content description.
The developers describe the content like this:
This game uses a stripping mechanic that leaves enemies in their underwear after combat. One game mode allows players to dress a female character in a revealing outfit (e.g., lingerie/underwear) and follow the camera as it moves around her figure. The game text and dialogue also contain sexual references. The words “f**k” and “sh*t” appear in dialogue. In one fighting mini-game, players use knives and cleavers to slash at each other, resulting in brief splashes of blood.

AKIBA'S TRIP: Hellbound & Debriefed
Supernatural creatures are stalking the pop culture mecca of Akihabara—and you know that because they've turned you into one of them. Their only weakness, and yours, is sunlight, which means there's only one way to stop them: call them out on the streets, knock their clothes off, and expose their skin before they can do it to you.
Arm yourself with a rolled-up poster, a guitar, a laptop, a magical girl wand, or (if you insist) an actual weapon, then hit Akihabara's colourful streets. Browse recreations of real-life shops circa 2011, mingle with Akiba's residents and tourists, and discover the town's many secrets.
Will you work with the secret paranormal-hunting agency, give the creatures a fair shake (hey, some of them seem all right), or just look out for your otaku friends? Choose your side, choose your missions, and enjoy a freewheeling adventure with AKIBA'S TRIP: Hellbound & Debriefed.

AKIBA'S TRIP: Undead & Undressed
- You can leave Rin's route for last, since she doesn't have anything exclusive to her. Her side mission can be obtained on Shizuku's route, Tohko & Shion's routes have exclusive side missions, and you want all non-DLC side missions cleared for the best movement accessory: Walk With Your Head Down (Zombie Stalker has a really slow walk speed for cutscenes).
- You will not have a partner to Unison Strip with in Shion/Kati's routes for the most part, while for Kati's route, you need to clear the other 4 routes so you can give your partner Zenya good gear upon character creation.
- The above two create a paradox, so avoid doing Shion/Kati's routes on Otaku difficulty unless you've got +999 gear by grinding the Arena on Easy through repeated NG+ playthroughs, are willing to take the time to do arena and side missions for EXP, and use the Latest OS from DSP (EXP x 1.75) from Junk Street's DOSPARA (15,000 Yen) at certain times to obtain more levels*.
- You need to at least do Kati's route on Casual difficulty or higher so you can obtain The Master's Spirit from 100-Man Kumite, otherwise it does not drop.
- Battle Arena Rank D, C, B, A, and S.
- Junk Street from Chapter 2 onward, or after clearing Main Mission #13 "Hurry to Electric Town Plaza!", since enemies with 50 base EXP will spawn alongside the 30 base EXP Foreign Tourists (228 ~ 481 EXP each), there's no police here to arrest you, and it's better to farm than Side Streets, Showa Street Exit, or Electric Town Exit.
- MM #18 "Cosplay Fest Begins"

Where do I find a doujinshi for the Otaku Power Quest?
Akiba's trip: hellbound & debriefed, playstation 4 nintendo switch pc psp, akiba's trip: hellbound & debriefed (playstation 4).
- I’ve got a few figurines. I’ve got some used laptops and I know where to buy a new laptop which I’m hoping counts for a PC but I have no idea where to get a doujinshi. I could swear I’ve checked all the shops and I’m on my 2nd play through having done all the other quests at this point so I don’t think I missed it in the storyline or previous side quests. Have I missed it somewhere or is it locked in a certain ending? Flyingmonkey125 - 2 years ago - report

- I finally figured it out right after I asked this of course. Doujinshi can be found in the crane game in the Akiba Station Front area. The used laptop did in fact count as a PC. The guy even lets you pick the ones to give him by asking about each one. It seemed to me like he asked about the ones I had most of first. Or maybe it just worked out that way for me.
