Anaconda Smoke Stack State Park

See one of the tallest free-standing brick structures in the world, a legacy of the legendary anaconda copper company..

The old Anaconda Copper Company smelter stack, completed in 1919, is one of the tallest free-standing brick structures in the world at 585 feet. The inside diameter is 75 feet at the bottom, tapering to 60 feet at the top. In comparison, the Washington Monument is 555 feet tall.

The stack dominates the landscape like the company once dominated the area’s economic life. Since the smelter closed in 1980, the stack has become a symbol of the challenges that face communities dependent on finite resources.

Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the stack may be viewed and photographed only from a distance. Interpretive signs that detail its history are located in the viewing site near Goodman Park.

Anaconda celebrates Smeltermens Day with tours of smelter stack

Every year for three days only, a tour bus filled with tourists, locals, and historians travels to the massive smoke stack that stands tall over Anaconda.

"Our relatives came through Ellis Island and I personally had people tell me that they only had a picture of the stack on them," said Margie Smith.

The 585-foot tall smelter stack overlooking the town of Anaconda sits atop a massive Superfund site surrounded by land owned by the Atlantic Richfield Company.

The yellow bus pulled to a stop and let out those wanting to get as close as possible to a piece of Anaconda’s history.

One of those people is local historian Ray Haffey.

"It’s the symbol of the copper industry—largest in the world, a stack, and it has not only historic relevance, but for this community it stands as a tribute to why the community was built," said Haffey.

The smokestack was built in 1918 in the hopes it would lower emissions of toxins and spew them out higher than the original Washoe stack that was only 300 feet tall.

The stack operated until the 1970s when Atlantic Richfield acquired the Anaconda Minerals company. Three years later, all smelting operations were shut down and, in 1983, Atlantic Richfield wanted to demolish the stack.

Margie Smith, along with Mike Finnegan and other members of Anacondans to Preserve the Stack lobbied the 1985 Montana Legislature to save the stack.

"We made several trips to Helena and lobbied and the final day at midnight they passed the bill that preserves the stack," said Finnegan.

Thanks to their efforts, the Anaconda Smoke Stack became a state park and a national landmark.

"It’s part of why we’re here. There's not many things left to tell our story and Anaconda’s changing so fast, so we need to take care of it," said Smith.

Their experienced staff will show you the ins and outs of river fishing in Anaconda, as well as float fishing on some of the local lakes. Fishing tours with Iron Wheel Guest Ranch are open to all experience levels.

Discovery Ski Area offers a number of different lessons and guided skiing adventures for all levels of skiers and riders.

10. Visit the Local Brewery

Anaconda, like many other towns in Montana, offers visitors a taste of the craft beer scene. Not all craft breweries are great, but Smelter City Brewing in Anaconda is one craft brewery you cannot miss.

Housed in an old bank building, the owners of Smelter City have taken a great deal of time and effort in restoring the historic building.

Smelter City offers a variety of rotating brews and flagship beers for you to enjoy. The brewery is kid and dog friendly. Oh, and our favorite feature is the merchandise store located in the old bank vault.

11. Discover Anaconda Visitor Center

If you are looking for plenty of information on Anaconda and the surrounding area, you’ll want to visit the Anaconda Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center .

Located in a replica of the town’s original railroad station, you’ll enjoy not only a wealth of information but also a beautiful train display. The Visitor’s center is located conveniently in downtown Anaconda, a perfect starting point for all of your local adventures.

Staff in the Visitor’s Center can provide helpful information on the best things to see and do in Anaconda, and they even have a very interesting video of the history of the area.

In the summer, check out the Anaconda Historic Bus tour, which provides a guided tour around Anaconda.

12. Take a Family Day Trip to Fairmont Hot Springs Resort

Fairmont Hot Springs Resort is a great place for the whole family to enjoy a little bit of fun and relaxation.

This resort is open year-round and offers a variety of great activities including a waterslide, four hot spring pools, golf, and tennis just to name a few.

Many people like to stay at the Fairmont Hot Springs Resort, but you don’t have to be staying there to enjoy all that the resort has to offer.

The Fairmont is known for its pool. They have two Olympic-sized lap pools and two mineral-soaking pools. The warm water in the soaking pools is purported to provide health benefits for a range of ailments.

The other amenity that the resort is known for is its 18-hole golf course. The “ Mile High, Mile Long ” 5 th hole on this course is particularly famous and is known to be one of the most challenging in the state of Montana.

The resort also offers a variety of dining and lodging options, making it a wonderful place to stay or visit when in the Anaconda area.

13. Timothy’s Memorial Chapel

Constructed on the hillside, 600 feet above Georgetown Lake is St. Timothy’s Chapel . This beautiful place of worship was built in 1965 by the Bowman Family in honor of their son who died in 1956 at the age of 18.

The chapel sits on the site of the Southern Cross ghost town near Anaconda. It was constructed of natural stone from the area, and plenty of clear and stained glass, making the chapel a perfect place to take in the glory of Montana’s natural beauty.

The Church at St. Timothy’s Chapel is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church, however, it is open to all visitors that wish to experience the beauty of the chapel and the views that it provides of the Rocky Mountains , the Continental Divide, Pintler Wilderness Area, and many of the surrounding 11,000 foot high peaks.

Sunday worship services are available mid-June through October at 11 AM.

14. Anaconda Country Club

If your visit to Anaconda needs to include some time on the links, then you’ll want to pay a visit to the Anaconda Country Club .

Located just outside of the town of Anaconda, this great golf course offers both 9-hole and 18-hole play, with a par 72 for 18-holes. It is important to point out that this course is only a 9-hole course, but you’ll play different tee-box sets for the ‘front’ and ‘back’ nine, giving the course a different challenge for each hole.

Mill Creek wanders through the course providing some additional challenges to play, along with 3 man-made ponds and a variety of challenging bunkers.

Anaconda Country Club also offers a driving range, putting and chipping greens, a well-stocked pro shop, and a great restaurant and bar for your 19 th hole adventures.

15. Visit Georgetown Lake

One of the most popular places in the Anaconda area for both locals and visitors is Georgetown Lake.

This beautiful lake is a popular spot for boating, fishing, camping, and even windsurfing. This 3,000-acre lake sits at 6,000 feet of elevation and is one of the most spectacular mountain lakes in Montana.

The lake is surrounded by amazing mountain ranges including the Flint Creek Range and the Pintler Range. If you’re into fishing, Georgetown Lake is not to be missed. The lake boasts some of the best Kokanee salmon and rainbow trout fisheries in Montana.

The lake is boat accessible, with four boat ramps. The lake is also open in the winter for ice fishing and snowmobiling.

16. Splurge on Dinner

While you’re in Anaconda, you’ll want to check out some of the local restaurants. The Barclay II Supper Club is one of the best in town and offers a more elegant dining option than many of the other restaurants in town.

The Barclay II Supper Club has been family-owned and operated for over 20 years. They offer a full 7-course meal with options such as steak, pasta, and seafood. The lounge offers a full bar and one of the most knowledgeable and friendly bartenders in town.

The Barclay II Supper Club is a local favorite and a stopping point for many of the visitors that return to Anaconda year after year. The atmosphere here is relaxed yet elegant, and the food is by far some of the best in Montana.

17. Seek Out Adventure

Pintler Adventures is the best place in Anaconda for folks that want to have an amazing adventure. Pintler Adventures is a rental provider that offers ATVs, UTVs, RVs, snowmobiles, and even watercraft like paddleboards, canoes, and kayaks.

Their experienced and knowledgeable staff can provide you with some of the best trails and sites to see in the Anaconda area. They even offer a limited number of guided tours.

18. Scrapbook House

Well, maybe you’re not into outdoor adventures, or maybe you need something to do while the rest of your crew is out playing golf or snowmobiling.

A great option in Anaconda is the Scrapbook Retreat House. This great spot provides a different type of getaway in Anaconda. Located west of historic downtown Anaconda, the Scrapbook House provides a wonderful spot for learning the art of scrapbooking, crafts, and art.

The Scrapbook House is a non-hosted retreat available for weekday or weekend stays and provides all of the scrapbooking supplies you might need.

19. Road Trip to the Pintler Veteran’s Memorial Scenic Highway

If you enjoy seeing the sights and want to have a great, relaxed drive, with amazing views, you’ll want to spend a day driving the Pintler Veteran’s Memorial Scenic Highway.

The drive takes you from Anaconda, 64-miles past Georgetown Lake, Philipsburg, and concludes in Drummond. Along the route, you’ll enjoy views of mountains and prairie, as you follow Flint Creek.

Many people choose this route when traveling to Butte and Missoula instead of driving I-90.

Free Things to Do in Anaconda, Montana

20. Copper Village Museum and Art Center

Free museums are a great adventure in many Montana communities. The Copper Village Museum and Art Center in Anaconda is a great free museum to check out.

Located in Anaconda City Hall Cultural Center, the museum features exhibits of heritage arts, history and traditions of the area, and Montana contemporary artists. In the City Hall Cultural Center, you can also visit the Marcus Daly Historical Society Museum and gift shop.

The exhibits in the Museum aren’t the only thing worth seeing at the Anaconda City Hall Cultural Center. The building itself was saved from demolition and carefully restored.

Today the building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

21. Anaconda Smoke Stack State Park

Constructed in 1919 and standing 585 feet tall, the smelter stack from Anaconda Copper Company is one of the tallest brick structures in the world.

The smelter stack is the last remnant of the Anaconda Copper Company that was once the center of life in Anaconda. When the smelter closed in 1980, most of the buildings were removed and the site became a superfund cleanup area, due to the contamination from heavy metals.

The stack is the only remaining structure from the smelter and is now listed on the National Register of Historic places.

Visitors to the State Park can view the stack from a distance at the viewing platforms located in Goodman Park. The Park also has plenty of interpretive signs that detail the mining history of the area, and the environmental clean-up challenges.

22. Washoe Park

Filled with beautiful gardens, mature shade trees, and plenty of places to relax and play, Washoe Park is a great spot to visit while in Anaconda.

The park has many typical features like a playground, tennis courts, a swimming pool, and even a duck pond. But it’s the features of this park that are unique that you really must see.

The Begonia House at Washoe Park was carefully restored by the Anaconda Garden Club and features many beautiful gardens.

There is also the Montana State Fish Hatchery, which is the oldest in Montana and is dedicated to developing populations of the cutthroat trout, the state fish of Montana.

Washoe Park also plays host to the annual Art in Washoe Park Festival. Considered to be one of the best art, culture, and food festivals in the state. You’ll enjoy juried art and craft booths from around the U.S. along with food and live entertainment.

The anaconda smelter stack.

Montana is home to many unique and beautiful sights, including one of the tallest free-standing brick structures anywhere in the world: the Anaconda Smelter Stack.

Built by the Anaconda Copper Company, this brick structure has become a well-known landmark visited by thousands of people each year. It is so large that the entire Washington Monument could fit comfortably inside of it.

This monument is so famous that Montana named a state park after it: the Anaconda Smokestack State Park. Located in Anaconda, Montana, the park is about an hour and twenty minutes outside of Helena.

A brief history of this masonry feat

Construction started on the Anaconda Smelter Stack in 1918 and was finished a year later in 1919. It stands 585 feet tall. The structure is 75 feet in diameter at the base and tapers to a diameter of 60 feet. To keep the structure safe, it was equipped with a lightning protection system. 

An impressive architectural design, the stack was meant to discharge gases created by the numerous smelting and roasting furnaces within. Combined with the exhaust flues, the stack was capable of carrying between 3 and 4 million cubic feet of exhaust gas per minute.

The stack opened for business on May 4, 1919. Many considered this day to be a monumental occasion as dark plumes of smoke floated into the skies. Anaconda Copper Company and its newest smelter stack were considered monuments to industrialism. Even today, it’s a reminder of the large-scale mining operations that once dominated the area.

The Anaconda Copper Company

The Anaconda Copper Company dominated the area in the 1900s and drove much of the economy in the region. It was one of the largest mining operations in the world during its time. Initially, the company focused on producing copper, later shifting to other metals like silver, aluminum, and uranium. 

Irish immigrant Marcus Daly, one of three “Copper Kings”, founded this company in 1880 along with a group of investors from California. The company quickly found success with its first copper mine in Butte, Montana. Later, the company expanded its hold overseas, owning and operating mines in Chile.

Fun Fact: Daly originally wanted to name the settlement Copperopolis, but the name was already taken.

It was this international shift that eventually led to the company’s downfall in the 1980s. The financial stress of its overseas operation combined with declining copper prices drove the company to start closing mines and plants. 

With progress comes pollution

As impressed as those in the area were at the time with this momentous new stack, it started spewing toxic waste into the land, water, and air from its very first day in operation. 

After the site was closed in 1981, a community group rallied to save it. The stack and the surrounding 300 square miles were named a Superfund site in 1983. It’s still undergoing a rigorous cleanup process today. 

Many additional buildings and facilities used to surround the Anaconda Smelter Stack, all of which were torn down decades ago. Visitors to the site can see how deep some of the holes being dug as part of the cleanup effort are, a show of just how widespread the contamination of heavy metals was.

Members of the general public were forbidden from visiting the site for nearly forty years because of the heavy metal contamination. It recently opened for tours in 2018 to celebrate the stack’s 100th anniversary.

Cleaning up the Anaconda Smelter Stack

Getting the stack named a Superfund site was just the beginning of the effort to undo nearly a century of damage copper mining left behind. 

The entire effort, which includes cleaning the soil, is estimated to cost $83 million. Those who grew up in the area, many of whom held summer jobs at the stack to pay for college, are glad of the efforts to make the site clean and keep it accessible to the public.

Visiting the Anaconda Smelter Stack

The site is open to the public, though with some restrictions. Because the site and surrounding land are still in the process of being cleaned of the toxic heavy metal waste, the stack itself can’t be accessed or toured. 

Those who visit will marvel at the massive concrete base and what remains of the terra cotta coating. Of course, the views of the serene countryside surrounding the stack are another reason to make the drive. Visitors can also stop by the Copper Village Museum and Arts Center, located in City Hall, to learn more about the history of smelting and copper mining.

Pilot in fatal Anaconda helicopter crash was family man

BUTTE — The pilot who died in a helicopter crash in Anaconda on Friday, April 26 leaves behind his wife, three sons, and a fourth son on the way, according to a fundraiser organized on the family's behalf.

A GoFundMe campaign for 28-year-old Justin Price states he "was a great loving father, with his kids and wife being his world."

Price was piloting a Bell 206 helicopter in the area of Anaconda’s smelter stack when it crashed about 7:45 a.m. Friday. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Authority are investigating the incident.

An obituary for Price says he was born in Helena and grew up on the family ranch in Avon. His wife, Jessica, is described as his "childhood sweetheart" who grew up on the neighboring ranch. Price's flying career took them to Oregon and Alaska before returning to Montana.

Price has twin 4-year-old sons, a 2-year-old son, and his wife is expecting their fourth child, according to the fundraiser. Proceeds will go toward helping cover expenses for the family.

Moscow Metro 2019

Will it be easy to find my way in the Moscow Metro? It is a question many visitors ask themselves before hitting the streets of the Russian capital. As metro is the main means of transport in Moscow – fast, reliable and safe – having some skills in using it will help make your visit more successful and smooth. On top of this, it is the most beautiful metro in the world !

. There are over 220 stations and 15 lines in the Moscow Metro. It is open from 6 am to 1 am. Trains come very frequently: during the rush hour you won't wait for more than 90 seconds! Distances between stations are quite long – 1,5 to 2 or even 3 kilometers. Metro runs inside the city borders only. To get to the airport you will need to take an onground train - Aeroexpress.

RATES AND TICKETS

Paper ticket A fee is fixed and does not depend on how far you go. There are tickets for a number of trips: 1, 2 or 60 trips; or for a number of days: 1, 3 days or a month. Your trips are recorded on a paper ticket. Ifyou buy a ticket for several trips you can share it with your traveling partner passing it from one to the other at the turnstile.

On every station there is cashier and machines (you can switch it to English). Cards and cash are accepted. 1 trip - 55 RUB 2 trips - 110 RUB

Tickets for 60 trips and day passes are available only at the cashier's.

60 rides - 1900 RUB

1 day - 230 RUB 3 days - 438 RUB 30 days - 2170 RUB.

The cheapest way to travel is buying Troyka card . It is a plastic card you can top up for any amount at the machine or at the ticket office. With it every trip costs 38 RUB in the metro and 21 RUB in a bus. You can get the card in any ticket office. Be prepared to leave a deposit of 50 RUB. You can get it back returning the card to the cashier.

SamsungPay, ApplePay and PayPass cards.

One turnstile at every station accept PayPass and payments with phones. It has a sticker with the logos and located next to the security's cabin.

At the platfrom you will see one of these signs.

It indicates the line you are at now (line 6), shows the direction train run and the final stations. Numbers below there are of those lines you can change from this line.

In trains, stations are announced in Russian and English. In newer trains there are also visual indication of there you are on the line.

To change lines look for these signs. This one shows the way to line 2.

There are also signs on the platfrom. They will help you to havigate yourself. (To the lines 3 and 5 in this case).

Anaconda Smoke Stack State Park

See one of the tallest free-standing brick structures in the world, a legacy of the legendary Anaconda Copper Company.

About the Park

The old Anaconda Copper Company smelter stack, completed in 1919, is one of the tallest free-standing brick structures in the world at 585 feet. The inside diameter is 75 feet at the bottom, tapering to 60 feet at the top. In comparison, the Washington Monument is 555 feet tall. The stack dominates the landscape like the company once dominated the area's economic life. Since the smelter closed in 1980, the stack has become a symbol of the challenges that face communities dependent on finite resources. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the stack may be viewed and photographed only from a distance. Interpretive signs that detail its history are located in the viewing site near Goodman Park.

Parking Lot Construction

Work on the parking lot at the Anaconda Stack State Park is to begin on Monday, June 13.

Parking will still be available along the street and the main exhibit will be accessible during most of the construction. 

Access to the exhibit will be closed only when work is being performed on the ADA ramp replacement. 

Please use caution when visiting the park during construction.

• Montana residents who pay the $9 state parks fee with their annual vehicle registration have no daily entrance fees to state parks. For residents who don't include this in their vehicle registration, non-resident day use fees apply.

• Day use entrance fee with a vehicle:  $8
• Day use entrance fee as a walk-in, bicycle or bus passenger:  $4
• With a Nonresident Entrance Pass:  Free
