Ninth-straight nod from the atp and wta sets new record.

INDIAN WELLS, Calif., December 15, 2023 –  For an unprecedented ninth straight time, the BNP Paribas Open has been named the ATP Tour Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 Tournament of the Year, as determined by player vote. Tennis Paradise has been recognized as the premier 1000-level event of the season by both Tours since 2014. In addition, it was also recognized by the WTA in 2013, making it 10 consecutive times on the women’s side and 14 overall.

“We are honored to see the ATP and WTA players once again vote Indian Wells as their favorite 1000-level stop of the year,” said Tournament Director Tommy Haas. “This award reflects the dedicated support from all of our wonderful tournament staff, volunteers, fans, and so many others who bring the BNP Paribas Open to life every year and contribute to the sustained success of our one-of-a-kind event.”

More than 450,000 fans flocked to the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in 2023 as the BNP Paribas Open was defined by a New Era of rising superstars taking center stage in the desert. Carlos Alcaraz and Elena Rybakina rose above crowded draws of competitors to earn their first career BNP Paribas Open titles in what was a thrilling tournament from start to finish.

The BNP Paribas Open has become beloved by players, fans, and media alike due to its unique tournament atmosphere. With world-class players competing in the stunning natural beauty and backdrop of the Coachella Valley, the event has become a must-see destination for tennis fans around the world. With unparalleled dining options; top-notch player facilities and amenities; and plentiful practice courts that let fans get up-close and personal with their favorite stars — the Indian Wells Tennis Garden is widely recognized as one of the premier venues in all of sports and commonly referred to as “Tennis Paradise” throughout the tennis community.

The Masters 1000 designation is the highest tournament category on the ATP Tour, outside of the Tour Finals, and includes the tournaments in Miami, Monte Carlo, Madrid, Rome, Cincinnati, Canada, Shanghai, and Paris, in addition to Indian Wells. The 1000 designation is also the highest tournament category on the WTA side outside of the Tour Finals, encompassing the events in Dubai, Miami, Madrid, Rome, Canada, Cincinnati, Guadalajara and Beijing, in addition to Indian Wells.

The 2024 BNP Paribas Open will be held at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden March 4-17.

Tips for Visiting the Indian Wells ATP Event

indian wells tennis paradise

Planning to visit the BNP Paribas Open? This ATP Masters 1000 tournament is a 2-week-long event hosted at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden and features some of the best players in the world.

We can also add that Indian Wells is a fantastic location to visit, beautifully located between desert and mountains. So let’s provide you with some tips to make the most out of your trip.

More About the Tournament

The BNP Paribas Open is part of the ATP Masters 1000 tour and held in the sunny city of Indian Wells over 2 weeks in March 2024. To be more precise, from March 3rd – 17th, 2024.

As always we can expect sunny and warm “Californian” weather and this event is often referred to as Tennis Paradise .

This is one of the most prestigious events in tennis, possibly the biggest tournament outside of the four Grand Slams. It’s a mandatory tournament for both WTA 1000 and ATP Masters 1000 . This means that the players includes the top 75 (ATP and WTA) players in the world, plus of course wild cards and qualifying players.

How to Bet on Indian Wells Masters

Indian Wells Location and Travel Tips

Getting to Indian Wells is a breeze, especially if you’re flying into Palm Springs International Airport which is just 15 miles from the event. From the airport, it’s just a short drive to the tournament venue.

Another option is to fly into any of the Los Angeles airports, for example LAX, and drive for about two hours towards the desert. If you’re going to rent a car, think about this long before the event start as this time of the year it’s also Spring Break holidays and it might be hard to find cars for decent prices.

There are several companies offering transports, accommodation, special ticketing or complete package for anyone interested.

Where to stay during BNP Paribas Open?

Well, this depends a lot on your preferences. In general we can say that if you plan to be around the courts most of the time and want to be near the action, stay in Indian Wells, Indio or Rancho Mirage. Other nice areas include Palm Springs, Desert Hot Springs, Cathedral City and La Quinta.

There are really nice rental houses available in these areas, to hang out in before and after the matches. Some of the nearby hotels include; Indian Wells Resort Hotel , Miramonte Indian Wells Resort & Spa , Tommy Bahama Miramonte Resort & Spa but it’s better you do a proper search for any hotel or house that suit your needs.

Ticket Info

Tickets for Indian Wells typically go on sale several months before the event, so be sure to get them early to secure the best seats. From single-day ground passes to full tournament- or luxury packages, there’s an option for every budget.

Tickets can be bought from the official site or via ticketing sites such as Ticketmaster , or Vivid Seats .

Here are the main days in March to choose when buying single tickets or packages.

What to Bring

Sunprotection is a must – the sun can be very hot here in March. Comfortable shoes and a cap or hat are also essential, as you’ll be doing a lot of walking between matches. And don’t forget to stay hydrated and bring water wherever you’re going around the event.

Note that the organizers usually have a “Clear Bag Policy” which means this:

  • Each fan may carry one bag that is clear plastic, vinyl, or EVA no larger than 12’’ x 6’’ x 12’’ or
  • A one-gallon clear plastic freezer bag (Ziploc bag or similar)

Almost everything around the event area is “cashless” and as you might be using your mobile for this as well as the official app , make sure your phone is properly charged each day.

Court Areas and Other Attractions in the Area

There are very decent food options in and around the courts, however the lines can be long at times. There are also many possibilities to buy cold beers or other alcoholic drinks.

While you’re in town for the tournament, there are of course other things to explore around Indian Wells. World-class golf courses and luxurious spas are just two nice options to relax or have some fun.

And why not take a day trip to nearby Joshua Tree National Park or hop on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway (image) for stunning views of the Coachella Valley.

Is it Worth it Visiting Indian Wells ATP Masters?

Definitely, even if it can be quite an expensive trip. This is one of our favourite tennis events of the year and it’s quite suited that it’s called Tennis Paradise.

I don’t know if it is often called “Tennis Paradise” so much as it is always calling itself “tennis paradise” – and trying to make the “Fifth Slam” a thing. In other words, it is always calling itself tennis paradise.

This kind of self-praise is acceptable and normal here in the US!

It’s a great tournament, one of my favorites, but the relentless branding and self-marketing is pretty obtrusive when you’re there and something that really stands out compared to other tournaments.

Personally, I also don’t think you can call something paradise in the midst of a region where everything is dead and brown and nothing grows because they get so little precipitation. Obviously, a little bit grows in the immediate area from irrigation – but still.

From humility to headlines: Navarro upsets Sabalenka in Indian Wells

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. -- Emma Navarro concedes the number 23 ranking feels like an odd companion next to her name. So you can only imagine her reaction after she strolled onto the second biggest tennis court in the world and knocked out Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka from the BNP Paribas Open.

"When I acknowledge my ranking right now compared to a year ago, it's really crazy and seems really fast," Navarro said on the WTA Insider Podcast earlier this week. "But then when I go out and hit or play a match, it doesn't feel like anything's happened that fast."

'Exhibition tennis!': Navarro wins a wild all-court point vs. Sabalenka

Navarro looked like she belonged Wednesday with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 win against World No.2 Sabalenka to reach the Round of 16. The victory is Navarro's best by ranking and boosted into a fourth quarterfinal on the season and first of her career at the WTA 1000 level.

As if those milestones weren't enough to underline just how good the Charleston native's 2024 season has been, she now leads the Hologic WTA Tour with 18 wins.

Not bad for a player who was still battling to crack the Top 100 12 months ago.

Listen to the the full interview with Navarro on the latest episode of the WTA Insider Podcast below:

The evolution of Coco Gauff: A glimpse into the future as she turns 20

No.1 swiatek sets quarterfinal match vs. wozniacki in indian wells, insider podcast: blinkova relives her historic australian open tiebreak.

Navarro made her WTA main-draw debut in 2019 and was the No.1 college recruit a year later. She chose to attend the University of Virginia, where she took home the NCAA title as a freshman. She turned pro in 2022, and after a season of nonstop play last year, she earned a Top 100 debut and season-ending finish at No.38.

The momentum continued in January, when she captured her first WTA title, in Hobart, and posted her best run at a Grand Slam, a third-round appearance in Melbourne.

"There's been a lot of slow and methodical progressions to my game," Navarro said. "It's like if a grandparent sees their kid once a year, they're like, 'Oh, you've gotten so big,' but the kid doesn't feel that much bigger than last time. That's a little bit how I feel."

On Wednesday, Navarro faced Sabalenka for the first time in her career. In a tight opening frame, Navarro won two tight deuce games on her serve to take a 4-3 lead, before breaking Sabalenka and ultimately holding again to take the first set.

'It means the world to me': Navarro emerges from under the radar

Sabalenka would break Navarro once in the second set to tie the match.

After 19 games, the match had yielded only two breaks of serve, but in the third, Navarro and Sabalenka exchanged three consecutive breaks. Eventually, Navarro wiped away Sabalenka's last chance to break to extend her lead to 4-1 and closed out the win.

Navarro finished the match with 22 winners to 14 unforced errors. Sabalenka struck 38 winners to 34 unforced errors. The key difference was in the break points converted. Navarro converted four of the five chances, while Sabalenka was two of six.

Last year, Navarro played 88 singles matches across all levels, crossing the globe in 29 tournaments. For a player who admits she struggled to see herself as a professional athlete, she has become the consummate pro.

"I dedicated a ton of my time to tennis, but there were other parts of my life, so I never, considered myself to be a tennis player, solely," Navarro said. "And I saw the best players in the world as just tennis players, nothing else. They're kind of these untouchable sort of figures that I would never be able to compete with because I'm just Emma. I'm not a world-class athlete.

"Being able to identify myself as that took a while and it's still a work in progress, I would say. But it's pretty crazy to be in this list of names in the Top 30 in the world, and just competing alongside so many amazing players."

11 - In the Open Era, only Carla Suarez Navarro in 2015 (12) has won more three-setters than Emma Navarro in 2024 (11) within the first three months of the calendar year. Navarros. #TennisParadise | @BNPPARIBASOPEN @WTA @WTA_insider — OptaAce (@OptaAce) March 13, 2024

In Indian Wells, she's been a reliable highlight reel, showing off her all-court physicality and ability to improvise. As she racks up win after win, Navarro has become one of the toughest outs in the sport. She is 11-2 in three-set matches this season.

Watch this: Navarro's hot-shot stunner ends a 35-shot rally vs. Svitolina

Navarro says matches felt like life-or-death situations for much of her career. Now, she's learning how to tap into that competitive intensity without bringing along the anxious baggage.

"Obviously I want to win, but I don't feel it's life or death anymore," Navarro said. "But it's definitely something where, feeling those super intense emotions, like 'I have to win this.' It sort of clicks on this thing in your brain where it's you'll do absolutely anything it takes to win.

"So it's been an adjustment trying to find that from somewhere else, from a healthier place than this is life or death, but still trying to get to that same place where I'll do whatever it takes."

Navarro will next face either No.9 seed Maria Sakkari.

"I know there's a lot of challenges coming up for me ahead, just with always consistently playing against the best players in the world," Navarro said. "It's not easy, coming out and performing, week after week. So I know it's going to be challenging.

"But that's kind of why I do it. I love to be challenged, and I love to push myself, and just try to continue to improve myself all the time. So, yeah, I'm in it for the challenge."

Rafael Nadal Nets First Top 20 Win Since 2022 With Victory at Madrid Open

  • Author: Tim Capurso

Rafael Nadal defeated world No. 11 Alex de Minaur 7–6 (6), 6–3 in the second round of the Madrid Open on Saturday, earning his first ATP Tour victory vs. an opponent ranked inside the top 20 since November of 2022.

Nadal, 37, at times showed flashes of the form that helped him win 22 Grand Slams in his career. The Spaniard had his signature, lefty forehand-down-the-line shot working well, in addition to his crosscourt backhand, which he fired for winners multiple times.

Nadal, with a raucous crowd behind him, won a thrilling, 77-minute first set in a tiebreak, then quickly broke de Minaur's serve to grab a second set lead he would not relinquish.

When told during a post-match interview that it seemed like "the old Rafa Nadal was back," Nadal pushed back on the notion.

Are we beginning to see the return of the old Rafael Nadal? 🤩 @RafaelNadal #MMOPEN pic.twitter.com/cKrwHWYYmN — Tennis TV (@TennisTV) April 27, 2024

"No, no, no not yet," Nadal said with a laugh. "It needs time, and I think for moments have been good level of tennis. I was able to do positive things but still on and off."

Nadal missed nearly the entire 2023 season after requiring surgery on his hip, an injury that had the decorated tennis pro pondering retirement going into 2024. On Wednesday, Nadal would not fully commit to playing in the French Open, a tournament he has won a record 14 times.

If he can maintain the form he displayed Saturday while staying healthy, it's likely he'll be on the court at Roland Garros when the French Open begins on May 20.
