SlumberPod In the Wild

My 2-year-old daughter LOVES her crib and HATES the pack-and-play. We bought this for a trip to Florida and she absolutely loved it. She slept great, and she even cried when we started to pack it away. We’ll be bringing this to every overnight and vacation!

Game changer for room sharing at home!!! Our preschooler and 10 month old can finally share a room per hour distracting each other. It creates enough of a sound and physical barrier for both of them to be undisturbed. Love love.

We recently traveled with our infant for the first time and were nervous about night. We were thrilled that our daughter slept so well in the slumberpod and now we have to bring this with us whenever we travel.

Love this little tent! Great for camping and for sunny days to play outside with the rest of the family. Easily folds, small enough to fit in luggage and nice breathable mesh for baby. I have told all my mom friends to get one if they haven’t already!

Great customer service! I like my pea pod but had trouble with it getting bent past the point of fixing on our first use. Now I’ve got a new one and it’s working great! Love being able to just throw it in the car and go!

How to buy a travel crib

Modern families live their lives on the go, and when they have babies or young children in tow, a travel crib makes staying away from home a little bit easier.

Unlike standard sized cribs made to stay in one place like a piece of furniture, travel cribs are portable places for a young child or baby to sleep or play. Typically, travel cribs can be easily set up and broken down, are lighter in weight, and are slightly smaller in size than a standard crib. Ideally, travel cribs don’t have a significant footprint when in use and will fold up compactly, often fitting into a case for travel.

There are many reasons why travel cribs are an “it” item on baby registries: They’re convenient, easy to use, portable, and can be used for more than just infant sleep. Do you need to set your baby in a safe place while you take a much-needed shower? Or pop over to Grandma’s house while you head out for date night? Travel cribs give you flexibility by providing a safe space to sleep or play.

There are a variety of travel crib options on the market today, but there are two main styles that are safe according to pediatrician recommendations:

  • Folding cribs: These sleep spaces look much like a traditional crib, though they’re often smaller and have features like wheels for portability. They generally fold flat for storage and are made of plastic, metal, or both.
  • Play yard cribs: These cribs double as play spaces and may have a removable bassinet or a padded bottom that’s safe for sleep.

Some families also have inflatable beds or mattresses to use for guests, but they’re not recommended for babies or young children under 15 months.

Dr. Jordan Wright, MD, FAAP, a pediatrician with Kaiser Permanente in Denver, Colorado, says that though there’s only “limited” data on air mattress safety and young children, there’s reason to believe air mattresses are not safe.

“Officially, the CPSC does not not recommend the use of these products in kids under 15 months; noting that even when properly inflated, these products still have the potential to lead to suffocation or for children to become entrapped between the mattress and the bed frame or the mattress and the wall,” Dr. Wright says. “I would recommend parents consider alternative sleep spaces that do not pose that level of risk.”

Of course, it’s important to follow the American Academy of Pediatrics’ (AAP) safe sleep recommendations Opens a new window when using travel cribs or putting your baby to sleep anywhere. Babies should always be put to sleep:

  • On their back, not on their stomach or any other position
  • On a firm sleep surface, such as a crib, bassinet, portable crib, or play yard with a tight-fitting, firm mattress and fitted sheet designed for that particular product, with no blankets, pillows, stuffed animals, or anything else in their sleeping space

See our buying guide at the end of this article for more on safety.

The large mesh windows allow you to easily see into or out of the playard so you can watch while your babies play. • Assembled crib: 39.75 x 39.75 x 31 inches; folded crib: 10 x 9.5 x 37 inches
  • Recommended for newborns to age 2

Not every parent needs a travel crib. Some parents stay put while their children are young, or visit only family members who already have cribs or other safe sleeping spaces set up for small visitors. But if you’re a family on the move, a lightweight travel crib can pay off in better sleep for everyone.

Just as travel cribs vary in function, they also vary in price, from a low of about $65 to $300 or more. Generally speaking, the more bells and whistles that are included, equal a steeper price tag. Higher-end travel cribs may include a more comfortable pad and accessories like a bassinet or carrying bag, and may also be more lightweight, easier to set up and break down.

However, for some families, basic is just fine, so don’t count out those more affordable options. Some of the less expensive travel cribs are just as lightweight, safe, and easy to use as pricier competitors; they may even come with accessories of their own.

Speaking of accessories, travel cribs generally come with their own mattress, but some are thicker and more plush than others. Any mattress used by a baby under age 1 should be firm, and should be covered only by a tight-fitting sheet, with no pillows, blankets, stuffed animals, or any other soft material inside the crib.

Lest you be tempted to skip the hassle of traveling with a safe sleep space in favor of co-sleeping with your baby, Dr. Wright offers this advice: “If parents want to travel without a crib they should know that there is not a specific age at which the AAP recommends or condones co-sleeping, or at which evidence has objectively shown co-sleeping to be a safe option. It has been clearly demonstrated to pose a serious risk to children under 1 year of age, and should be avoided in this age group regardless of travel.”

Dr. Wright also highlighted the importance of reading your crib’s instruction manual, and following its safety guidelines. “Travel cribs should only be used according to the manufacturer’s guidelines,” he said.

Before you invest in a travel crib, here are a few key points to consider:

  • Size: Think about how big the crib will be when it is set up and also when it is broken down and folded into its travel case.
  • Storage: Where will you keep it? Does your travel crib come with it’s own storage bag? Is it compact and will it fit into your trunk? Can it fold down flat and store under the bed?
  • Travel options: How easy will this be to travel with? Can you carry it while holding your baby? Does it come with a bag with handles? Can you fit it in a tote or suitcase? If you plan to fly with the crib, can it fit in an overhead compartment or must it be checked?
  • Versatility: It is nice to have a travel crib that’s spacious enough to pull double duty as a play yard.
  • Age range: When purchasing a travel crib, read the product manual for the weight and age recommendations. Most travel cribs are for children under 3 years old. In many cases, older children can climb out of a travel crib, posing a safety risk.
  • Ease of setup: You aren’t going to want to use a travel crib if it takes all day to set up. Find one that is easy to use and fits within your lifestyle needs.
  • Care: Is the mattress easy to take out and wipe off? How can you clean when the inevitable blowouts happen?

SlumberPod Review – The Best Baby Sleep Travel Accessory

The SlumberPod still stands as my favorite baby accessory EVER. I love pulling out my SlumberPod when I’m away from home for the simple reason that my son loves sleeping in it.

Thanks to the SlumberPod, I am able to enjoy traveling again!

The SlumberPod also made it into my roundup list of the best baby sleep products !

In this updated SlumberPod review, I highlight each of the main features and explain exactly how it can help parents like you get more sleep while on the road with your babies.

I also have some really cool and unique tips to share with you that will help you get the most from your SlumberPod.

What is a SlumberPod sleep tent?

The SlumberPod is an easy to assemble baby sleep tent that goes over your pack n play and helps infants, toddlers ( and now even pets ) get some much-needed sleep when sharing a room with an adult.

In short, the SlumberPod gives your baby a dark room within your room.

slumberpod reviews

Picture this, baby goes to bed at 7:00 pm but mom and dad don’t have to. You can keep your lights on, walk around and even watch TV while your little one sleeps away in the same room!

What I like the most about having a SlumberPod is that it allows my baby to go to bed while I can still relax and enjoy some baby-free time. It’s also super easy to assemble and fits over most standard travel cribs.

How does the SlumberPod Work?

The SlumberPod helps babies or toddlers sleep better and longer when you’re not at home.

Your kids no longer have to share the same sleeping space as you even if they you are room sharing in a hotel or at the cottage. The Slumberpod gives kids privacy (and darkness) when parents want to keep a tight sleep schedule but may not want to go to bed at the same time as the little ones.

Slumberpod items spread out

The SlumberPod Fan

The SlumberPod fan is a simple yet useful add-on. Even though the baby sleep tent material is breathable, the air does not move much if the windows are closed and it can feel stuffy on hot days.

slumber pod baby fan

The SlumberPod design team not only added a fan pouch, but they also had the perfect fan made to fit into the side pocket.

The fan works great and moves the air very well. I actually sat inside the pod to feel how it was and I can confirm it works.

baby sleep tent travel

How does the SlumberPod compare to other sleep tents?

SlumberPod is really the best sleep tent out there, period. There are many competitors that try to emulate what the SlumberPod does but they don’t come quite close.

In my opinion, the closes competitor is the SnoozeShade but they offer a different product altogether. I even made a detailed comparison of the SlumberPod vs Snoozeshade you want to know more about.

There are a few other alternatives that you can find in my list here . Keep in mind they do not offer what the SlumberPod offers in terms of quality, accessories, options, and especially darkness inside the pod. If you are however looking for a cheaper alternative , they can come in very handy.

SlumberPod FAQ

How big is the slumberpod.

The SlumberPod measures 50″ Long x 36″ Wide x 56″ High when assembled and it can fit a pack n play that is up to 44” L, 30” W and 36” H.

Does the SlumberPod fit over my playard?

The SlumberPod fits most pack n plays, playards and playpens. Here is a list of some of the most popular play yard models that fit inside the SlumberPod. This list is NOT an all inclusive so there are many other models that will also fit inside the SlumberPod, so make sure to check the dimensions.

You can also fit some mini cribs inside the SlumberPod These include the Delta Children portable crib, and LA Baby The Original Bedside Manor Mini Crib.

SlumberPod is ALSO compatible with many cots and small inflatable mattresses. Make sure to verify the dimensions of you cot and test it out before going on your trip.

Is the SlumberPod safe?

Many parents worry about SlumberPod safety and I’m glad they do. Sleep safety for babies is of the utmost importance and SlumberPod made sure their product was certified to the highest standards. The SlumberPod passes ALL safety tests in the United States, Canada and Europe related to infant and juvenile products.

The SlumberPod is Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) compliant and it even passed other more severe voluntary tests. The mother daughter team at SlumberPod left no stone unturned when it comes to sleep safety your children.

The team at SlumberPod goes into detail about the safety of their product here .

Does the SlumberPod get hot?

In my experience, the SlumberPod can get warm on a hot day if the room is not climate controlled. I have found that opening all of the windows and having the fan on inside the pod will help reduce the temperature significantly.

Slumber Pod now sells their own fan for this exact purpose and the new sleep pod comes with a fan pouch that is accessible from the outside.

Does the SlumberPod fit over a crib?

The SlumberPod does not fit over a standard size crib, but it does fit over a mini-crib and most pack n play, playards and toddler cots.

How to fold the SlumberPod?

It’s really easy to fold the SlumberPod. Simply remove the tent poles, lay the material down on the floor, fold it over itself 2 or 3 times and then roll it up tight. Once rolled up, the whole tent and poles fit into the carry bag.

Does the SlumberPod come with a mattress?

No, the SlumberPod does not come with a mattress, but this is by design. It’s meant to be compatible with many other popular portable mattress brands, including most Graco, 4Moms and BabyBjorn products.

When looking for a travel mattress for the Slumberpod, just ensure it fits their dimensions: (50″ L x 36″ W x 56″ H)

Can the SlumberPod be used for outdoor activities?

The good news is that this versatile sleep solution can indeed be used in various outdoor settings. In this section, we’ll explore how the SlumberPod can be integrated into your outdoor adventures to ensure your little one gets a peaceful sleep.

Adapting to Different Surfaces

The SlumberPod’s design allows for easy setup on a wide range of surfaces, from grass to sand to dirt. The tent’s bottomless feature means that you can place it over a portable crib or play yard, so your baby remains comfortable and protected from the outdoor elements. For additional stability, it’s a good idea to use the included tent stakes.

Providing Shade and Ventilation

Outdoor activities often mean exposure to sun and heat, but the SlumberPod has you covered. The UPF 50+ fabric offers excellent sun protection, keeping your baby cool and safe from harmful rays. Additionally, the mesh ventilation panels ensure proper airflow, so your little one remains comfortable even during warm outdoor outings.

How to setup the SlumberPod in 2 minutes flat

This is not just a Slumberpod review. In this article, I also want to show you how to assemble and use this awesome blackout sleep tent.

The SlumberPod is extremely easy to assemble and even comes with an brief visual assembly manual attached to the carry bag. In my instructions below, I will show with step-by-step pictures a slightly different way that I have been using for months very successfully.

The “User Manual” tag in the carry bag suggests that you lay the SlumberPod material over the playard, whereas in my version I choose to do it flat on the ground. Both ways work just fine and allow for one-person assembly in 2 minutes or less.

Remove the 3 items from the bag (1x pod material, 2x tent rods)

Lay out the material with the center in the middle and connect the tent rods

Pass the rods through the blue slots in the material

Insert the ends of one of the rods into the nylon pockets at the bottom corner while keeping the pod flat on the ground. Don’t try to lift the pod yet.

Insert one end of the second rod into the nylon pocket and go to the opposite side of the pod

While inserting the other end of the second rod, guide the pod upwards and pull the material down as needed

SlumberPod

Connect the 3 plastic hooks from each side to the tent rods. There are 12 hooks total.

At this point you can either set it over the pack n’ play as shown in the video below:

Or you can fold it flat and place it out of the way until bedtime.

The SlumberPod design – convenience and longevity

The simplistic design of the SlumberPod allows for a very quick setup and takedown. The SlumberPod is nothing more than a blackout tent without a bottom.

If you’ve ever gone camping and put up a tent you already know exactly what to do and how to set up the SlumberPod.

I made a video and took pictures of each step to help you get set up in under 2-minutes.

Here is the video of me setting up the SlumberPod in under two minutes.

Pictures and set up instructions are shown in the SlumberPod Assembly section.

Build quality and materials

The SlumberPod is held up with two standard tent poles, but the material of the canopy is what makes it stand out.

The material used for the entire pod is really nice. It’s thick, dark, breathable and it doesn’t wrinkle.

The fabric of the new SlumberPod is exactly the same as the original. It is made from 85% polyester and 15% spandex which makes it breathable and stretchy.

front windows slumberpod 2.0

Once you slide the poles into place and attach all of the hooks, you can feel the SlumberPod becomes very taut and sturdy.

The fact that the blackout tent is light and bottomless makes it super easy to move around without feeling like it’s going to fall apart.

The whole pod can be easily stuffed back into the carry case with the poles and all. Once in the carry case, it can fit in a standard carry-on luggage or backpack.

The windows

Another amazing feature of the SlumberPod design is the multiple “windows”: two in the front and two in the back.

The window design has changed slightly in the new SlumberPod . The new setup has changed the rear windows and kept the same design for the front windows.

The front windows have the same dark material under the canopy that helps keep most of the light out even when the window is open.

The front windows open the same way as before (see images below). The upper window is height adjustable but the lower one only has one fully open setting.

slumberpod front window closed

The rear windows have changed. What used to be a thin mesh can now be better described as netting. Because of this, SlumberPod changed the “open” setting of the new windows.

slumberpod rear windows open

The way to open the rear windows now is with a small post that holds the material away from the window to allow for airflow without letting the light in. A clever way to have the windows “open” while maintaining the blackout darkness that SlumberPod is known for.

slumber pod review rear window

The addition of the fan pocket in combination with the new windows means that airflow is much improved inside the sleep tent.

I can personally attest that the windows significantly increase the airflow inside the SlumberPod. I tested and witnessed with my own eyes what the open windows can do. The temperature inside the baby sleep pod dropped from 75F to 70F (24C to 21C) after the windows were opened.

Bottom line: the windows work!

The camera pocket

The one piece of the SlumberPod design I didn’t love in the original version was the camera pouch. The plastic material that they used in the camera pouch was thick and distorted the image to a point that it made it very difficult to see the baby in the dark. This was the case for many different baby monitors including mine.

SlumberPod camera pocket

The other (minor) problem was that the pouch was fully enclosed in plastic. This means if your camera had a temperature sensor it would not ready the real temperature inside the pod but the temperature inside the camera pouch and they could differ significantly.

The updated SlumberPod attempted to fix these two issues. First, they added a mesh material to the sides of the pouch to allow for airflow and therefore an accurate temperature reading.

slumber pod reviews pouch

Secondly, they made the plastic material slightly thinner and more malleable which helps with the camera image and the infrared beam for night vision.

The new fan pocket

This new feature is a huge bonus for me. One of my favorite tips for parents using the original slumber pod was to bring a portable fan and place it on the ground beside the playard to get the air moving inside the pod.

slumberpods fan pouch

Since the addition of the fan pocket, you can simply place your fan inside the pocket from the outside of the pod. It works like a charm.

SlumberPod has added an easy access fan pocket on the side that fits most small portable fans. They also decided to come out with their own fan that fits perfectly in the pocket – great job again!

SlumberPod tips that will enhance your experience

I consider myself a SlumberPod expert because I’ve been using it for well over two years, with two of my kids, on multiple trips, weekend getaways, and naps at grandmas. I’ve set up and taken down the SlumberPod dozens of times and I don’t get tired of it.

I was using the SlumberPod way before they went on Shark Tank and got a deal from Barbara – ok, enough bragging.

Because I’ve used the baby sleep pod in almost every possible situation, I figured out some trick to make it even better.

Here are some tips I want to share with you that will most definitely enhance your SlumberPod experience:

Please note that I crossed out my original tips that are no longer applicable to the new SlumberPod but still left the text for reference in case you are looking at a second-hand SlumberPod.

  • I realized that even though the SlumberPod canopy is breathable, the air can get a bit stale inside, especially on hot days. Since I love moving air and always have a fan going in my room, I figured my son must love it too. For this reason I always bring a small portable fan. The new SlumberPod design has a fan pocket that is accessible from the outside and they also offer their own fan that fits perfectly in the pouch.
  • When you share a room with your baby or infant you may want to go about your night after he goes to bed. I found that a sound machine playing white noise helps create a sound barrier between the pod and the outside world so you can walk around, watch TV or play on your phone with the volume up while your baby sleeps away in the same room.
  • I like to see my baby when he’s sleeping and I know many parents feel the same way. The SlumberPod has a camera pocket that works very well with most baby monitors.
  • The slumber pod can take some space when open, especially if you are sharing a small hotel room with your infant baby. If you push the two poles towards each other from the side, the SlumberPod actually folds flat to less than an inch thick while still set up! So, it can be placed right behind the pack n play or against any wall in the room and it takes so much less space.
  • A few days after I returned from a two-week vacation in Mexico (where my 8 month old slept through every single night and many naps in his SlumberPod) I decided to open up the SlumberPod and found an odd, musty smell coming from it. I then confirmed that my brother-in-law also had the same issue. I can only assume that the humidity from the Mexican heat got in the material and stayed there even though our rooms were air conditioned. Bottom line is that all you need to do is air it out once you get home.
  • I now bring my SlumberPod everywhere I go. It might as well stay in the trunk of my car permanently. Let’s say you go to grandma’s to hang out for a while? Pop the pod open and put baby to nap when it’s time. It literally takes 2 minutes to setup and take down and will certainly help them sleep better.

Phil & Ted’s Traveller Full-Size Travel Crib

Why shelly recommends it:.

It only weighs 7 lbs.–compare that with other play yards! Add to that its terrific versatility and its hard to find a better travel bed. Use it from birth on up through three years (or more), indoors and out. Breathable mesh panels let you take this to the park and beach just as easily as Grandma’s house (where rubber feet will protect her floors).

The self-inflating air mattress works much like a Therm-a-Rest (or backpacker’s mattress), providing good insulation from the cold ground as well as padding from hard floors. An optional UV-protective cover fits over the top to offer protection outdoors (though you’ll have to throw a beach towel or something over the sides for sun protection now that they are 100% mesh (please let me know when you’ve finished thinking that one through, Phil&Ted).

The Traveler also has a zipping side panel to allow in and out access for playtime on the beach, and for older children who are ready to come and go on their own from their own travel bed. It stands 51″ x 24.8″ x 31″ when open, and folds to 24.8″ x 8.6″ square packed in its carrying case.  Find it online at:   Amazon.com

BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light

At 11 lbs. the Travel Crib Light weighs a little more than Phil & Ted’s full-size travel crib, costs around $100 more, and you probably won’t be able to use it as long (it also doesn’t offer the unzipped side self-access for older children).

That said, the easy to assemble BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light is worth it to some parents for the 1-minute (or less) set-up time, space savings when folded and set-up, and eco-certified softer fabrics–every bit of which can be gently washed in the machine.

In theory, the BabyBjorn Travel Light can be used for newborns up to around 3 years old (older children may be happier with the longer mattress of the Phil & Ted or Peapod Plus, both of which they can freely come and go from when they’re ready). Measures 32” x 44” x 24” set up, and is 19″ X 24″ X 6″ packed in its travel case.  Find it online at:   Amazon.com

The Peapod Baby Bed for Travel

Peapod portable baby travel bed

Helps create your “tent within a tent” safely on cold camping trips, and gives a clean, safe place for baby to snooze bug-free, whether indoors or out. Folds into its own carrying case at 16.5″ diameter and 3″ thick, then pops up when needed to 46″L x 28″W x 18″H.

The Peapod Plus weighs less than 3 lbs. Although this is recommended for  1 to 3 years, you may prefer the slightly larger Peapod Plus, which can be used on through the preschool years (see below).  Find it online at:   Amazon.com

The Peapod Plus Travel Bed

Peapod Plus portable baby travel bed

The Peapod Plus can be used from infancy well through preschool, and includes a lightweight sleeping bag. In addition to the UV mesh found in the smaller Peapod, the Plus also has roll-down nylon sides for added wind protection.

Other differences: The poles used in the Plus are thinner and more lightweight than the very heavy-duty ones used in the original above, keeping its weight down, but at the cost of some stability (if you have rowdy rompers in the house, you may prefer the original Peapod). Travels at 19″ diameter and 6.5″ thick in its carrying case. Unfolds to 52.5″ x 34″ x 25″.

Find it online at:       Amazon.com

Fold ‘n Go Infant Travel Bassinet

munchkin brica fold n go travel bassinet

This portable folding infant bassinet sets up in 10 seconds (okay it took us 20 the first time, but…) and features a rigid steel frame with four-point Safe-T-Lock System , providing a sturdier alternative to some baby travel beds with soft sides. Mesh side panels also allow for better air circulation.

The Brica Fold N Go bassinet folds to 22″ at its widest point x 16″ x 2″ thick and weighs less than 3 lbs. Unfolds to 30.5″L x 22″W x 10″H with an included 29″ x 18″ foam mattress with cover. For newborns up to 3 months or 15 lbs., or when baby starts pushing up.   Find deals on the Brica Fold ‘n Go Infant Travel Bassinet online at:   Amazon.com

The Snuggle Nest by Baby Delight Folding Infant Travel Bed

The very popular Snuggle Nest has been improved with new safety features, including ventilation through breathable sidewalls and an optional 1.5″ incline wedge to help elevate baby’s head–very helpful should a little nose get stuffy during your travels.

This model of Snuggle Nest plays soft music or womb-like sounds and includes a convenient night light you’ll be glad to have when checking on baby in an unfamiliar hotel room. Cover can be removed and washed.

What I don’t like about this newer model is that the wrap-around bumper means it won’t last as longer for taller/longer babies, and the new “vented” side walls actually look less breathable than the earlier mesh used.

Still, for travel with a swaddled infant, this may be just what you need. Open dimensions are 17.5 x 6.5″ x 18″. Folds in half for travel. Weighs 3.5 lbs.   Find deals on the Snuggle Nest online at:     Amazon.com

First Years Close and Secure Folding Infant Travel Co-Sleeper

First Years cosleeper used for travel with infants

Baby travel beds with a built-in, battery-powered night light are few and far between. This co-sleeper also adds an extra measure of protection, buffering your baby from head to toe, making it a suitable sleeping spot for infants both in the “family bed” and out.

As mentioned, it features a built-in night light, which can be helpful for late-night checks, especially when staying in new and unfamiliar places. Machine washable cover and sheet included. Overall dimensions are 26″ x 16″ x 6″ (24″L within bumpers). Folds to 19″ x 17″ x 7 1/2″ with carrying handle.   Find it online at:   Amazon.com

Summer Infant Travel Bed with Toy Bar and Shoulder Strap

Summer Infant folding travel bed for infant

Great for the airport and possibly even on the airplane. It starts out folded into a travel bag with a shoulder strap and bottle pockets on each end. Then, when you need a clean, safe spot for baby to stretch out while you await your flight, just unfold this portable baby bed and the toy bar is already in place.

What’s that? There’s NOT a changing table in the lavatory on your flight? No problem. This will give you a clean, workable surface with no-roll sidewalls to use either on the airplane seat, floor, or–if the toilet design suits–in the lavatory over the closed lid. Oh, right! And when you get to the hotel, you’ll also have a handy baby travel bed. 😉   Find it online at:    Amazon.com

The Shrunks Inflatable Portable Bed for Toddlers and Preschoolers

Great solution for occasional visits to Grandma’s house, car trips, and camping (but at 6 lbs. and still bulky when deflated, you probably don’t want to pack this portable bed on the plane).

The air mattress insert is the same size as a standard crib mattress, and you can use it with your own crib/toddler bed sheet sets. (If your child is already pushing the limits of the toddler bed, take a look at the kid-size inflatable travel bed that fits a twin-size sheet .)

The inflated bumper with side rails allows you to tuck blankets deeply to help them stay put. Inflates in just 30 seconds using the included electric (plug in) pump. Phthalate-Safe, BpA-Safe and Lead-Safe.   Find it online at:    Amazon

The Shrunks Inflatable Portable Bed Rails

inflatable bed rails for travel with kids

Make the most of extra beds where you find them by easily adding these portable bed safety bumpers to hotel beds, guest beds, cruise ship berths, and then some.

Inflate with the included foot pump and slip under the side of the bed’s fitted sheet to prevent roll-off. Deflated, these bed rails take up very little space in the suitcase and they weigh in at only 1.8 lbs for the pair. Phthalate-Safe, BpA-Safe and Lead-Safe.   Find it online at:    Amazon.com

How did we get our start?

The idea for SlumberPod started in December 2014 when Katy and her husband and baby were visiting Katy’s mother (Lou) for the winter holidays. Because it was a packed house, the three had to share a room. The baby woke up two nights in a row—seeing her parents across the room—and refused to go back to sleep. Thing was … their baby was rarely a bad sleeper at home. Katy and Lou decided it was time to create a safe, easy and portable solution to help make vacations more restful and fun for everyone—and SlumberPod was born!

10 best baby camping beds for tent camping trips.

baby smiling inside a tent

Are you planning on taking your bub on their first camping trip in the great outdoors? Or maybe you’re starting somewhere with a little less commitment – like your backyard. Either way, you know that camping with a baby requires quite a few extra supplies to make everyone’s trip more tolerable.

Whilst we’re more used to sleeping on soft sand nowadays, we’ve endured our fair share of hard, rocky ground, and we know how essential a quality baby camping bed is (for everyone’s rest!). Thankfully, there are many different styles of baby beds for camping to ensure you’ll find the perfect version for your baby.

A safe, comfortable baby camping bed is essential for any family camping trip, and we’ll be discussing several different designs and features in more detail below. The right sort of camping bed for your baby will depend on their age, the size of your tent, and what kind of surface you’ll be camping on.

This post is part of our essential outdoor gear series for adventurous families

What to look for in a suitable camping bed for babies.

Let’s take a look at several key features to consider, along with a few different baby camping bed styles before we jump into our favorite camping bed brands.

Key features to look for in portable camping beds for babies

Portability — This is certainly the most essential feature for any baby camping bed. You’ll undoubtedly be carrying multiple packs to your campsite and keeping an eye on wayward children! The best portable camping cot for baby will be compact enough to fit in your existing luggage and weigh in under 15 lbs.

Ease of Assembling — No one wants to pack additional assembling instructions for an overly complex baby camp bed. Find one that is quick and simple to fold out and pack back up.

Material — Despite your best efforts, you’ll probably need to clean your baby’s camping cot after a few trips out into nature. Machine washable material is preferred, but at the very least, you should be able to spot clean any soiled areas without damaging anything.

Age/Weight Range — Are you planning on taking your bub camping regularly, or are you searching for something for a specific trip that you won’t use again in the near future? Infant camping beds generally last through six months. Larger models will undoubtedly be heavier, but you can also use them through toddlerhood.

Size — Before you purchase any baby camping bed, we recommend taking note of your tent or RV’s dimensions. How much room will you have to put something up? If you’re tent camping, you might be better off with a pod-style or camping cot as opposed to a traveller crib.

Cost — How often you plan on using the baby camping bed will often help determine how much you’re willing to spend on one. There are infant camping cots for every style and price range, and we’ve included a wide selection with your budget in mind.

Different Baby Camping Bed Styles

Pod Style — Baby camping pods are a bit like an instant pop-up tent for your bub. They’re ultra-lightweight and usually have a removable mesh cover to keep biting bugs out while keeping your child as cool as possible. These sleeping pods usually have a lightly padded mattress that’s well-suited for softer ground. However, you can easily add a second mattress or thick blanket underneath to make sleeping more comfortable.

Portable Loungers — If space is a concern, you might want to invest in a portable baby lounger that you can place next to you in bed or close by while you’re sleeping. Most camping cots like these have a cushion around all sides with an indented area in the middle for your bub to snuggle into. These are ideal for infants, but many loungers can accommodate older babies and even toddlers.

Bassinet/Crib — If you have room in your tent or RV, you can always bring a lightweight travel crib. This type of baby camp bed can also act as a portable playpen during the day or when you’re preparing meals and need to place your bub in a secure area. Most cribs for camping have minimal parts to make setup and breakdown as pain-free as possible.

Traveling with Babies: How to Fly With A Pack and Play

Whether this is your first time flying with a baby or your tenth, preparing for air travel with your kids is a lot of work and can be stressful. The packing, prep, and travel time can be overwhelming for first-time and experienced parents! From the first time a baby comes home, you need somewhere for them to sleep safely, and as they get older, a spot for them to play without getting into trouble. If you plan on traveling, you will still need these things, which can be particularly difficult when the place you visit isn't exactly baby-proof. A pack n play is a play space, a bassinet, and a diaper changing station, making it the perfect solution. Whether driving or flying, you can fold them up and tuck them away in an easy-to- carry case for travel.

CAN YOU GATE CHECK A PACK-N-PLAY?

When traveling with my three young kids, I purchased small suitcases adorned with their favorite Disney characters, with wheels and a handle for my toddlers. You can also buy a solid color and use fabric markers to decorate and make it unique, so they’ll want to pull it. I bought mine from Amazon for $20, but you can sometimes find them used or even borrow from a friend. The toddler suitcases contained small toys, coloring books, storybooks, and a tablet to help keep the kids entertained during the flight. Each of the toddlers having their own suitcase that contained their belongings helped make traveling memorable, and they

Toddler pulling her suitcase through the airport.

To make things even easier on everyone, all three kids’ clothes were in one checked bag equals less luggage to wait for after the flight.

I held my infant in a wrap-style baby carrier to allow for hands-free, ensure that the baby was always near, and help keep the baby calm through the noisy space. The long piece of stretchy fabric was easily adjustable to different body types, which made it great for traveling, especially when visiting family.

Infant in wrap-style carrier while traveling by air.

When traveling by airplane, some parents rent baby equipment at their destination. Whether a stroller, crib, car seat, high chair, or pack-n-play, these rentals get pricey - upwards of $25 a day per item. If you plan a little, you can bring your own gear and minimize what you carry through the airport! I always brought a stroller as it provided transportation for kids that get tired, a place to put the small suitcases, a bag of snacks we purchased before the ride, and the diaper bag. At your gate, check in at the desk to receive a tag for gate-checking a stroller. Your stroller will be waiting for you when you land at your destination.

30 minutes can change your parenting forever

In just 30 minutes we can better understand the root cause of your parenting challenges with sleep and child behavior and create a plan to address them.

No more guilt & shame

No more yelling & punishing, no more fighting within your marriage, watching priceless moments with your child transform into yelling, anger and overwhelm is heartbreaking as a parent..

Unfortunately too many parents go through these challenges alone and end up feeling exhausted, overwhelmed and powerless because the situation almost never gets better on its own.

Mindful parenting involves being fully present and engaged with your child, fostering emotional connection, empathy, and emotional regulation. This approach helps manage stress, improves communication, and encourages positive behavior through non-judgmental listening and thoughtful responses. By modeling calm and compassionate behavior, parents create a nurturing environment that supports both their and their child’s well-being. Practicing mindfulness allows parents to handle challenges with patience and kindness, making it a transformative approach for family dynamics.

Your child’s tantrums are more and more frequent, bedtimes & mealtimes transform into frustrating negotiations and sleepless nights.

It becomes even more difficult to stay calm and aligned with your partner’s decisions as the fatigue accumulates and your daily family life becomes a real struggle.

The reason you’re struggling is simply because you don’t have the right tools & strategies yet. There is nothing wrong with your parenting and there is a way to finally enjoy the family life you’ve dreamed of, with fun, joy and deep connections.

Hi, I'm Kristine!

I’m a Mindful Parenting Educator and child sleep consultant dedicated to freeing families from the exhaustion and guilt that can overwhelm us all.

Why? Because I’ve been there myself… Mealtime meltdowns, diaper changing tantrums, car seat protests, using time-outs, threats, getting SO angry that I would slam doors. This was NOT the vision of the parent I wanted to be. So I decided to get to work: classes, reading stacks of books, therapy, coaching, Sleep Consultant Certification, practicing real time… and after years of work my family completely transformed. I completely transformed… and our connection was deeper than ever. I then discovered that all the work I had done could help other parents make the same transformations for themselves and their children. And this is what I want to help you with.

When you drop them of, you say goodbye and you can’t wait to see them after school… You’re not dreading dinnertime because it’s now a time to connect rather than micro managing how many bites they’re eating.

Bedtime routine is really sweet, you laugh, snuggle and your children feel safe to stay in their bed the whole night. You know you’ll all have a good night sleep…
