From April to October, the weather is ideal for cycling and discovering the beauties of this region. Please do check the local conditions before your arrival.
  • REMARKS This unique itinerary utilizes cycling routes that explore the still, quiet, and picturesque hinterland along the German alps. The routes are planned with meticulous precision to avoid the tourist hotspots and the traffic that threatens to dispel the magic of the landscape.  Swimming Opportunities: If you cycle around the Bavarian Lakes in the summer months, there are often opportunities to swim. Don't forget to pack bathing suits and towels. Clothing: You are traveling to southern Germany, but of course you must not do without a windbreaker/rain jacket to protect you from rain and cold. We recommend sturdy shoes and a warm sweater for this trip.
  • IMPORTANT TO KNOW Due to the changing requirements for entry, it is imperative that you stay up to date on requirements set by the country/countries that you are visiting. Please visit our Travel Restrictions Tool page and the country/countries government webpage for this information.
  • DOCUMENTS: Before you travel, please check the passport and visa requirements of the country/countries you plan to visit. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have proper identification. For US citizens, the U.S. Passports & International Travel website is a good source of information. The Country Information tab provides details about passport validity, blank passport pages required, etc. It is important to research before you travel as airlines will not permit boarding if you do not have the required valid documents. We recommend that you make copies of your important documents and papers (insurance cards, etc.). Leave a copy at home and have a copy with you. In the unfortunate situation that you lose your original documents, having copies facilitates the replacement process. *Important note: Please check on the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) status as once implemented, this will be required to visit any of the 26 Schengen-member countries for tourism, business, medical, or transit. This is an additional check on security rather than a visa. Insurance: Before traveling, we strongly recommend you review your personal insurance and health insurance to ensure you have coverage appropriate to meet your needs, and the needs of your family and dependants, in case of any loss of property or illness, injury, or death.

Best of Bavaria

Luggage transport icon

Enjoy unspoiled nature and Bavarian culture as we cycle around crystal-clear mountain lakes, admire majestic mountain ranges and breathe in the fresh air.

Bavaria – we know what you’re thinking of: Oktoberfest, roast pork, delicious beer, leather pants, dirndls, cozy huts, deep blue lakes, and snow-capped mountains. Here, in the deep south of the republic, you can discover one of the most beautiful stretches of land in Germany. Upon arrival, we invite you on a stroll through the town center and get a taste of local cuisine at dinner in a rustic, traditional inn, before we venture out of the city on the Isar river into the Alpine countryside lying south of here. Lake Starnberg is situated 25 kilometers southwest of Munich and is probably best known for being the site of King Ludwig II of Bavaria’s mysterious death. From here, we press forward into the Alpine foreland, which unfurls in front of us with rolling hills, luscious pastures, and breathtaking mountain ranges. The picture-postcard scenery is our constant companion. Along the way, we will visit a glass factory, where we can witness the skills of traditional glassblowers. As we journey further south, we will pass several smaller and larger lakes. They not only make for superb views, but also entice you to swim in the crystal-clear mountain water. Our last day in Garmisch takes us on one final adventure in the mountains of the Wetterstein region. The Ferchensee, Elmau Castle (the site of the G7 summit in 2015), and the Mittenwald town of violin makers are also waiting to be discovered.

Travel schedule

Day 1: Arrival in Starnberg Your adventure begins with our Welcome Briefing in the hotel at 4 pm where you can meet the group.

Day 2: Starnberg - Murnau Far from the busy highways, we begin our journey on a 50-kilometer cycling path around Lake Starnberg. Despite its closeness to the lake, we’ll hardly ever be riding directly on the coastline as most of the land here is privately owned. In the afternoon, we reach the nature reserve bordering the Osterseen, a group of romantic lakes amid lush meadows and wetlands. This mystical, boggy area consists of 19 small lakes, known as the teardrops of Lake Starnberg.

Day 3: Murnau - Kempten Today’s ride takes us through the Alpine foothills, whose rolling hills, lush green meadows, and towering mountains open up in front of us in the most spectacular way. The Celts are said to have lived here before the Romans settled here some 2,000 years ago. The scenery is incredible, just like a postcard. The day’s destination is Kempten, an old Roman city on the Iller river.

Day 4: Kempten - Oberstaufen Say goodbye to the Bavarian Pfaffenwinkel, as this region is called due to the numerous monasteries and churches in the area. We will soon reach the Allgäu. The Allgäu ranks among the most beautiful and popular tourism destinations in Germany and the locals aren’t shy to point this out. Just like elsewhere in the world, the landscape has had a massive influence on its people: the people of Allgäu are welcoming, friendly, and proud of their home and feel a strong sense of being connected to their traditional craftsmanship and old customs.

Day 5: Oberstaufen Two nights in your hotel in Oberstaufen give you plenty of time to explore the charming town center, discover beautiful alpine landscapes, or experience traditional cultural events. In the morning, we head out to Lake Constance to get on the ferry to Bregenz – with e-bikes, of course. In Bregenz, we continue our trip to the Pfänderbahn. The cable car takes us even higher up the local mountain, where stunning vistas of Lake Constance as well as views as far as Switzerland await.

Day 6: Oberstaufen - Füssen Shortly after leaving Oberstaufen, we pedal along the Alpsee, which, once we have passed Immenstadt, also gives us an opportunity to take a dip in its refreshing mountain waters. Today’s route crosses the cycle path that connects Lake Constance and the Königssee, which is known as one of the most beautiful, scenic cycling roads in Germany. Pedal through the Alpine foothills, passing by numerous idyllic lakes, and many world-famous sights.

Overview for guided bavaria e-bike tour.

This guided E-bike trip from Lake Constance to Lake Tegernsee offers stunning views of the Alps and the Alpine foothills. With panoramic Alpine views from start to finish, picturesque lakes, Bavarian villages and towns, and the fairytale castles of King Ludwig II, the Guided Bavaria Bike Tour is not to be missed. Passing through the rolling hills of the Allgäu, the route leads nicely past the Bad Tölz Brewery, World Heritage church Wieskirche and Benediktbeuern Monastery before it ultimately ends up at spectacular Lake Tegernsee.

Itinerary for Guided Bavaria E-Bike Tour

Arrive in lindau.

Individual arrival in Lindau. At 4 pm, your tour guide will be waiting for you at the Hotel Lindauer Hof, right by the city's harbor basin. After a brief welcome, take a city tour with an expert guide to get a good overview of its history and take advantage of its architectural gems. Lindau is a must-see medieval town! There are arched alleys and lanes, a magnificently painted town hall crowned with stepped gables, and splendidly decorated churches. The port of Lindau is the most important in Bavaria, and a lighthouse and a massive stone lion flank its entrance.

Bike from Lake Constance to Allgäu

From Lindau, you cycle along the Leiblach river up into the Allgäu. In Genhofen, you can visit the squat Gothic Church of St. Stephen at the foot of the notorious Hahnschenkel, a steep section of the salt road that is difficult for horse-drawn carriages to climb. Luckily you cycle with E-bikes! In the afternoon, take a break in Oberstaufen, embedded in a breathtaking landscape. At Immenstadt, you will have a reserved room with a view of the Great Alpsee. In the evening, you will go to a cozy inn outside Immenstadt.

Cycle to a castle hotel

From Marienplatz, in Immenstadt, you first cycle comfortably along the banks of the Iller. Then, at the foot of the Grünten massif with the 1,730m high Übelhorn, the tour continues uphill to the picturesque banks of the Rottach reservoir, where you’ll take a lunch break at an idyllic spot. In the afternoon, the route leads to Nesselwang via Memersch (the highest point of the cycle tour at 1000m above sea level), Oy -Mittelberg, and Maria Rain. From Nesselwang, it goes through forests and fields, past small villages to Hopferau, with a view of the Zugspitze and the Tannheim mountains.

Bike around castles

On today's stage, you can see numerous castles, castle ruins, and palaces on the heights of the Allgäu and Tyrolean mountains throughout the day. From lonely vantage points to the visitor magnet Neuschwanstein, everything is there. Through green farmland, you first reach Speiden with its Mariahilf pilgrimage church, which is well worth seeing. Then, with a view of Germany's highest castle, the Falkenstein ruins, you pass the former Vilsegg fortifications through Tyrol. On the way back to Germany over the "green" border, you will reach the fairytale royal castles of the Bavarian King Ludwig - Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein. Over the Lech Bridge and past the Hopfensee, you cycle back to Hopferau.

Bike to Bad Kohlgrub

After a few kilometers on the bike, you will reach the valley station of the Tegelbergbahn. Park your e-bike and float up to the Tegelberg (1880 m) with a beautiful view of King Ludwig's dream castles. With some luck, you can observe ibexes during a short panoramic hike. Back in the valley, the cycle route leads past the Bannwaldsee on a small side road up into the forest of the Ammergau mountains. Around noon, you will reach the picturesque Wieskirche, a World Heritage Site. Finally, you will reach Bad Kohlgrub at the foot of the Hörnle via the "Königsstraße”.

Cycle to Bad Tölz

Freshly recovered this morning, you'll head for Grafenaschau, located on the species-rich Murnauer Moos. Pass the idyllic farming village of Ohlstadt with the Kaulbach villa, which is well worth seeing, and the Schwaiganger stud farm. Take a break in Kochel am See. Afterward, you can visit the Franz Marc Museum and see works of the "Blauer Reiter" by Franz Marc and Wassily Kandinsky. With the Kochelsee behind you, you cycle on to Benediktbeuern. There is a breathtaking view of the Benediktenwand (1,801 m). The Salesians of Don Bosco monastery looks back on more than 1,250 years of history. Part of the monastery is open to the public. Through the former electoral Bavarian court bath Bad Heilbrunn it goes between Blomberg (1,248 m) and Stallauer Weiher to Bad Tölz. You can easily explore the lively market street, winding streets, and historic spa district on foot. Dinner is not included tonight, so you have time to explore the city in the evening and dine wherever you like.

Bike from Bad Tölz to Tegernsee

From Bad Tölz, you cycle via Gaißach through the Attenloher Filze to Reichersbeuern. The striking church tower greets you from afar. A special feature is the Reichersbeuern Castle, picturesquely situated on a pond, which served as a film set and today houses a private high school. Shortly before the Tegernsee, the destination of your bike tour, a wonderful descent awaits you. Lastly, you'll take a boat across Lake Tegernsee. Enjoy the views of the lake and the Alps, and reflect on the last few days with a glass of sparkling wine!

Depart Tegernsee

The journey ends after a hearty breakfast. Tegernsee is well connected by train; you can reach the main train station in Munich in one hour. Alternatively, you can book the return transfer to Lindau, offered by the tour operator.

Bavaria is a captivating region located in the southern part of Germany. With its breathtaking landscapes, rich history, and vibrant culture, Bavaria offers a unique and unforgettable experience for visitors from around the world.

Stretching over an area of approximately 70,550 square kilometres, Bavaria is the largest state in Germany, both in terms of size and population. Its capital city, Munich, is internationally renowned for its Oktoberfest celebrations and is often referred to as the “beer capital of the world.” However, Bavaria has so much more to offer beyond its famous beer culture.

Lakes, Mountains and Rivers

Bavaria’s diverse landscapes will enthral nature enthusiasts. From the majestic peaks of the Bavarian Alps to the beauty of its lakes and rivers, such as Lake Constance & Chiemsee and the River Danube, the region is a paradise for outdoor activities. Hiking, skiing, cycling, and boating are just a few of the many options available for those seeking adventure or a peaceful retreat in nature.

History & Culture

Bavaria’s history is deeply rooted in its medieval heritage and royal past. Castles and palaces dot the landscape, including the world-famous Neuschwanstein Castle, which inspired Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle. History buffs can explore the historic towns of Regensburg, Nuremberg, and Rothenburg ob der Tauber, where medieval architecture and well-preserved city walls transport visitors back in time.

Bavaria is also a cultural hub, brimming with traditional festivals, music, and arts. Beyond the lively atmosphere of Oktoberfest, the region hosts a multitude of celebrations throughout the year, showcasing Bavarian traditions, such as the colourful costumes of the Trachtenvereine (traditional costume clubs) and the vibrant folk music of the Alphorn and the accordion. The world-class opera houses, theatres, and museums in Munich and other cities provide a wide array of cultural experiences for visitors to enjoy.

Furthermore, Bavaria’s cuisine is a treat for food lovers. Indulge in hearty dishes such as Bratwurst, Schweinshaxe (pork knuckle), and pretzels, accompanied by a refreshing Maß (litre mug) of beer. Whether you’re seeking natural beauty, historical wonders, cultural immersion, or culinary delights, Bavaria has it all. With its warm hospitality and the charm of its people, this region captivates visitors with its blend of tradition and modernity. Come and experience the magic of Bavaria for yourself, and what better way to explore than on an ebike?

Useful information about your cycle tour in Bavaria

Bavarian cuisine.

Bavarian cuisine stands for meat with hearty sauces, filled with meat, accompanied by dumplings, covered with meat and on top of it an extra dollop of love (butter). And as a side dish you can serve cabbage salad. That is of course somewhat exaggerated, but we’re heading in the right direction. Traditional Bavarian cuisine isn’t light. Pork knuckle with bread dumplings or ‘Leberkäse’ (meatloaf) with potato salad, aromatic bread with obazda or fluffy ‘Dampfnudeln’ also make non-Bavarian’s mouths water. The most famous Bavarian dish is undoubtedly the Munich Weißwurst with pretzels, which is traditionally served with a well chilled Weißbier – of course brewed according to the famous purity law. Delicious! But, only in the morning! After the clock strikes 12 noon, we should not see a Weißwurst!

Schäuferla

All about the sausage

There’s hardly anything more Bavarian than Weißwurst. The white delicacy was invented by master butcher Moser Sepp in 1857 and was actually a mistake. He was going to make sausages for guests for guests of his inn, but ran out of sheep intestines. So he sent his apprentice to buy some. The apprentice wasn’t blessed with intelligence and returned with pig intestines unsuitable for consumption. In the emergency, the master butcher still filled them with veal sausage – and what luck! This was the birth of the Munich Weißwurst! In Munich, these popular sausages are eaten all year round, for almost every occasion. Whether you ‘zuzelt’ (suck) them or eat with a knife and fork, it’s up to you.

The climate in Bavaria

The climate in the beautiful Free State of Bavaria is optimal for us cyclists. The classic weather in Bavaria looks like this: hot summers and very cold winters are typical of this continental climate. Spring and autumn are usually pleasantly warm. For about one third of the year the temperatures drop below zero. Like almost everywhere in Germany, Bavaria can also suffer heavy rainfall. Of course we do not expect that. We expect sunny cycling days in this beautiful Alpine region!

Did you know…

  • …that there are 622 breweries in Bavaria? Most of them are privately owned.
  • …that the Bavarian language is threatened with extinction, so has been declared a cultural asset by UNESCO?

  • …that former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger was born as Heinz Alfred Kissinger in Bavaria?

Passau - Viking Bavaria by e-bike excursion or included tour?

I hope this is the right place to post this question. I was an avid Cruise Critic researcher a few years back prepping for ocean cruises, but I am a little less familiar with the etiquette of postings for River Cruises with the fewer thread options and I have not found as much information specific to my questions in my reading thus far. I'm also still getting used to the newer format of CC - so much so that I haven't even figured out how to change/update my signature.

I'll be doing a Romantic Danube cruise on Viking in June 2023 (traveling with someone who has not taken a river cruise before) and am trying to determine which excursions to book through Viking for when they become available in October. I have only done one river cruise myself on the Rhine in May 2019 with Viking and loved it! We are very interested in the Bavaria by e-bike optional excursion, but since we don't have specifics on how long we are in the various ports, I don't know if that would still allow any time to see much else in the city of Passau. The tour is 3 hours but it looks like we have the whole day in Passau, so I am hoping we would still have time to tour a bit on our own either before or after lunch, depending on when the e-bike tour would be.

Anyone out there who has done this tour with any feedback? I have seen a few clips of this from others' videos on YouTube, but nothing more specific. I will also be posting in the general river cruise forum area looking for anyone with some daily programs from a somewhat recent (but not modified due to low water levels) Viking Romantic Danube sailing from Budapest to Regensburg to help plan our other stops. Thank you to those who have already posted information from their previous journeys - I hope to do the same after our cruise next year.

I would also be interesting in hearing some comments on this. We are taking the Viking European Sojourn (Amsterdam to Bucharest, Romania) next June and also wanted to do the Ebike in Passau. It seems that sometimes the alternative excursions are at a different time than the included one and others are at the same time. Hopefully it is crystal clear on the MyViking app in October.

It typically is denoted as a morning or afternoon excursion. It is also clear when the excursion is all day. MyViking shouldn't allow you to book a conflict.

Thanks

@MyDogRudy   first, when are you cruising?  We are on the June 4

cruise from Budapest to Regensburg.  We were originally booked for August 2022 but move it due to low water concerns.  On that cruise Passau had the walking tour of Pasau in the morning from 9:30am - 11:00am (1 1/2 hours) and the E-bike tour was in the afternoon I believe starting at 1:00pm or 1:30pm.  This gives enough time to get back to the ship for a quick lunch in between the excursions.

Sorry I do not have the total time in port.

By the way their is a "roll call" under Viking River Cruises for 2023 Romantic Danube Cruise - https://boards.cruisecritic.com/topic/2875010-all-2023-viking-romantic-danube-river-cruise/#comment-63911273 .  You will see a link in post #12 to a google doc you can enter your information and maybe see other others sailing on the same cruise.

Thank you so much for this information! It doesn't matter to me whether the extra tour is before or after the included tour, just was curious to know if you could do both. One thing about researching river cruises is there are fewer detailed reviews that show the itineraries for each day, so it is more difficult to plan ahead. For the ocean cruises I have done in the past I would book excursions directly with each vendor in each port, but Viking did such a nice job with theirs that I am likely to use their excursions - they just do not let you know when they are going to be, so to book them prior to seeing the schedule for the day risks missing something else,

I have posted on the roll call thread and added our names to the roll call excel document. We will be sailing after you, but it is still a nice way for everyone to share any helpful hints they have learned specific to these cruises.

We were just in Passau in early August on a Viking cruise.  The eBike excursion is quite expensive for 3 hours, so we opted out and walked around the city.  If you really do want to do an eBike, there are 2 places in town where you can rent an eBike for about $20-30 Euros for the day and you can easily do the route on your own.  We tried to rent the bike, but you needed an advance reservation.  The ebike rental shops are just in the town and easy to reach by foot.

That sounds a nice alternative. Passau tourism website gives this info: https://tourism.passau.de/leisure-sports/cycling/

This tour gives you a unique perspective of a little bit of everything in 3 or 5 hours: must-see tourist sights, local hangouts, Russian food, a glimpse of the modern Moscow life, amazing photo opportunities, a bit of Russian history, and a lot of fun!

A bike trip is sure to capture your heart. It enables you to see the heart of Moscow within the Boulevard Ring and to explore some non-touristic areas of the city, to get an image of the city centre and to work out at the same time.

Our tours differ and depend on whether you are interested in city scenery or nature-like landscape. A variety of places in Moscow are great for riding a bike: these are large parks, yards with old mansions, and historical streets in the centre.

Let’s see what’s waiting for you!

Here are 4 suggested itineraries for a 3-hour tour:.

Moscow Bike Route #1

St. Basil's Cathedral, GUM, Kazan Cathedral, State Historical Museum and Lenin's Mausoleum

Revolution Square and Theatrical Square

Bolshoy Theatre, Metropol Hotel, Chinese Wall, State Duma of Moscow

Alexander Garden

Historic City Center

Delicious lunch at a café/restaurant

Arbat street + Stalin Skyscraper

The  Arbat  has existed since at least the 15th century and is proud of being the oldest surviving street of the Russian capital. Nowadays, it is now an entertainment and event mecca for Muscovites and tourists alike.

Victory park

Get thrilled with 142 metres  Obelisk  and  Victory Park museum , which is an open-air museum dedicated to the Russian victory of 1945, built in 1995 to celebrate 50 years of victory

Moscow Bike Route #2

Pyatnitskaya street - the Tretyakov Gallery - Luzhkov Bridge - the Cathedral of Christ the Savior - the Gogolevsky Boulevard - the Nikitsky Boulevard - the Tverskoy boulevard - Teatralnaya street - the Bolshoi Theatre – the Kitai - Gorod - Red Square and GUM store - the Bolshoi Moskvoretsky Bridge

This route is the best one if you want to see the heart of Moscow. It goes right through the major places of interest and touches upon the most exciting and vibrant areas of Moscow such as part of the Boulevard Ring, which is absolutely loved by everyone.

Cozy streets of Zamoskvorechye will never leave you indifferent. This district has a long and vivid history and is full of old baroque houses along with Stalinist buildings. It includes three theatres, three museums and sixteen churches.

Back in the 18 th century Zamoskvorechye was known as a quiet, country-like land of single-storey houses and conservative businessmen. It remained country-like and is much more filled with business than before, as this area is just right in the city centre.

You’ll learn:

  • what was previously on the site of the Novokuznetskaya metro-station;
  • names of four abandoned metro stations and how to find these stations;
  • what is the oldest bridge among all the bridges in Moscow;
  • how old was Pavel Tretyakov when he decided to collect paintings, that are now exhibited in the Tretyakov gallery;
  • what does the real form of the Boulevard Ring in Moscow look like;
  • what tricks did the Russian government used to save the houses and buildings from bombing during the World War II;
  • what unofficial name the Bolshoi Moskvoretsky bridge has

Moscow Bike Route #3

View over the Kremlin - The Luzhkov Bridge –  The Strelka Institute –  The Muzeon Park –  The Gorky Park –  Neskuchny Garden –  Sparrow Hills –  The Luzhniki Stadium -  Novodevichy Convent – The Arbat Street – The Gogolevsky boulevard - The Cathedral of Christ the Savior –  The Bolotnaya Square

This route includes the most popular city-sights and goes along the Moskva-River. It starts with an observation point, from which you may enjoy the view over the Kremlin, and covers all the most beautiful green areas of Moscow. Historical sites are included into the route so you can feel the historical vibes of ancient Moscow.

  • where is hidden an island Moscow;
  • where in Moscow you can get printed music of the most sweet masterpieces like “Chocolate waltz” and “Cake-gallop” along with a box of chocolates of the 18 th century;
  • why the Luzhkov bridge is also called “the bridge of kisses”;
  • the place where the famous Olympic symbol – the Olympic Bear of the Olympics-1980 was flown from;
  • the stage where Rolling Stones and Madonna performed when they came to Moscow;
  • why the Krymsky bridge was Stalin’s favourite bridge and what musical instrument it represents;
  • where living statues in Moscow could be found in 1740s;
  • myths and legends about inhabitants of the main building of Moscow State University;
  • story about why Sparrow Hills were called that way;
  • how Napoleon was cheated when he was going to burn down the Novodevichy convent;
  • what was supposed to be on the site where the Cathedral of Christ the Savior is now;
  • why Moscow was nearly burnt down in the 15 th century and which role the Arbat street played in it.

Moscow Bike Route #4

Starting with wide area of the VDNKh, you are to learn interesting and fun facts about this spectacular part of Moscow.

  • where is a hidden the secret bunker under Moscow (and no, it’s not a famous Bunker 42 everybody knows about;
  • why the number of golden statues at the fountain is more than the number of Soviet republics, although it is said to correspond them;
  • why one of the Stalin statues was called “matryoshka” (Russian doll);
  • what was Picasso’s favourite statue at the exhibition in Paris in 1937.

You’ll see:

  • the world’s first light-music fountain that was built in 1950-1954;
  • pavilions that symbolize Soviet republics;
  • the Botanic garden which is twice as big as the Principality of Monaco;
  • the largest green-house in Europe (for the opening day in 1945);
  • English garden at the Ostankino mansion;
  • Ostankino Tower, one of the tallest structures in Europe;
  • the most beautiful flowers in hidden places of the parks.

Biking through VDNKh, Botanic garden and the territory of the Ostankino park will definitely be appreciated by nature-lovers and all those who are keen on speed, who knows no limits and want to explore off the beaten path of Moscow.

NCM Moscow Electric Bike Review

NCM Moscow electric bike

When you purchase through links on our website, we may earn a commission. Affiliate disclosure.

NCM make high-quality, but affordable electric bikes. In this review, I will explain why I believe the NCM Moscow is one of the best budget electric mountain bikes.

About NCM Electric bikes

NCM Bikes, founded in 2014, have quickly become one of the largest electric bike brands in Europe, the parent company, Leon Cycle GmbH is a German company based in Hanover. Their e-bikes are designed in Germany and manufactured in China.

This great e-bike is now available in the US with a higher power output 500w motor and a top speed of 20mph. The NCM Moscow Plus has a high capacity 48v 16ah battery, Tektro hydraulic disc brakes and Suntour XCM forks with 100mm travel.  This model uses the more advanced C7 LCD with increased functionality and has 24-speed gears with Shimano Crankset and Acera 8-speed rear mech. There is also a throttle fitted.

I have ridden the EU spec version and that was fairly nippy, so I would imagine with double the power on tap this US version is an absolute joy to ride!

EU Specification

The centrepiece of this Electric bike is the DAS-Kit X15 geared rear hub motor: This durable 250W rear electric hub motor is known for its efficiency and high torque output. It offers a reduction ratio of 1:5 and a maximum torque of 55 Nm, which is excellent for such a small motor. This German-designed hub motor punches above its weight and it is refreshing to see such a high-quality unit on an affordable e-bike.

das-kit x15 250 watt electric bike hub motor

48v13ah Lithium battery pack with USB charging port for mobile devices:  Usually, electric bike battery packs take up a considerable amount of space in the frame, but the Moscow’s battery is integrated into the down tube of the bike, keeping the weight low and central, which helps to improve stability. The claimed maximum range of 75 miles seems a little optimistic, but possible if the pedal assist is used wisely. The total battery energy capacity is 624wh (watt hours), so if you were consuming 20wh per mile, your range would be 31 miles. My friend owns one of these bikes and gets an average range of around 40-50 miles.

48v 13ah lithium battery pack fits neatly into the ncm moscow's frame and has a usb charger for mobile devices

This is a rugged bike built for the road less travelled:  This is an excellent bike for weekend adventures on trails and gravel tracks. The Suntour XCT front forks have 100mm of travel, which is more than adequate for light off-road riding, and the excellent Schwalbe Smart Sam all-terrain tyres provide grip where it’s needed. The gel saddle is comfortable enough, and the Velo ergonomic handlebar grips not only look great but feel great too!  Gearing is the dependable Shimano Altus 21-speed, and all the gears are indexed perfectly as expected.

ncm moscow electric bike review

Multi-function LCD : The Das-Kit LCD gives you all the information you would expect, including journey time and mileage. It also has 6 power levels of pedal assist, so you can fine-tune the power output to suit your needs.

NCM Moscow electric bike lcd display

Excellent build quality:  One thing that has always impressed me with NCM Electric bikes is the consistency of the build quality. The NCM Moscow is no exception. It looks great, but there is no compromise on functionality and safety.  The Tektro mechanical disc brakes with 160mm rotors provide predictable braking and the brake levers incorporate motor cut-off switches to ensure safe riding.

NCM Moscow electric bike dimensions

The NCM Moscow electric bike offers exceptional value for money. I have tested NCM’s other bikes and this one is no exception. They all offer a lot for the price. The specification is excellent and it is good to see a 48v battery fitted to a 250w bike. This battery is the same capacity as the Milano I reviewed previously and a realistic range of between 30-45 miles, or 31 miles using the 20wh per mile calculation, should be expected. The claimed range of 75 miles may be a little optimistic for everyday use – but it depends on how much you use the electric assist.

The Tektro Mechanical disc brakes provide adequate and predictable stopping power, while the Schwalbe Smart Sam tyres will provide sure-footed grip on a variety of surfaces, as well as a reasonable amount of puncture protection.

It is good to see an integrated battery pack on an e-bike of this price, it does finish the bike off nicely.

As far as electric mountain bikes go, the NCM Moscow is excellent. Not only is it well-made, but it has a decent battery and an excellent motor.

I serviced one of these for a customer last Summer and had to take it for a short test ride.  I was impressed with the way the small motor effortlessly handled the steep Cornish hills. The beefy 29er tyres handled the potholes and bumps of the back lanes with ease.

I had previously ridden the Milano model and there are a lot of obvious similarities. The Milano is made with the daily commuter in mind, whereas the Moscow is geared more toward the recreational rider, who will be venturing off-road more often. If I had to choose between the two, I would go for the Moscow, simply because it has that ‘go anywhere’ feel, and if you decided to use it as an everyday commuter bike, there are provisions to fit mudguards and a rack.

quality shimano altus 21-speed gears fitted to the ncm moscow

As with all the other NCM bikes I have reviewed, I rate this bike. It has to be the best-value electric mountain bike on the market at the moment.

The great thing about this bike is that the build quality is excellent. It feels very rugged and durable, although I would err on the side of caution when taking it off the beaten track. It is not a high-end mountain bike and isn’t designed to take the rigours of extreme downhill riding. The suspension forks are fine for rough surfaces and a few small potholes, but nothing too harsh like rocks and logs.

If you are in the market for an affordable off-road e-bike, then this ticks all the right boxes.

If you are looking for a more commuter-orientated bike check out my review of the Milano . If your budget doesn’t quite stretch to the NMC Moscow, It would be worth looking at the NCM Prague Electric Mountain Bik e .

Hello, I have just purchased the NCM Moscow 26″ 1st generation. I am desperately looking for a rack that fits. Do you have a reference? Thank you in advance for your help.

Bonjour, je viens d’acheter le NCM Moscow 26″ 1erer génération. Je cherche désespérément un porte bagage qui s’adapte. avez vous une référence ? Merci à l’avance pour votre aide.

I’ve seen the Topeak MTX Beam rack fitted to the Moscow. It clamps on to the seat post and is a good quality rack.

Regards, Tony

Salutations, Tony

I got my Moscow Plus last September and yesterday took it out for my 20th weekly ride from San Francisco across the bridge into the Marin Headlands, usually just over a 33 mile ride. I’m 71 and it is a work out but I don’t ride to work out. I ride to get out into nature. The seat crumbed under me within two months of getting it but some duct take fixed it perfectly. The fixture that has the key slot to use to fit in the battery came loose when I had a flat tire fixed but aside from being loose when the battery is not in it, still works perfectly. The tires handle the sharp rocks on some of the trails. The gas throttle, the bike’s gas pump, is dangerous at first. I learned to turn off the power before taking the bike down stair ramps and before wheeling it into my basement. The bike jumps out of your hands if you touch that throttle while your standing on the ground. Had a bad accident last November on a steep incline when I grabbed the handlebar to stop the bike sliding away under me and it shot off when I accidentally touched the throttle. Me, the bike and my iPad all fell and shattered in different directions. The rear derailleur was jammed into the back wheel so the wheels wouldn’t turn and I didn’t have a tool on me miles away from civilization. But 10 minutes later another cyclist with a mini tool saved the day. So carry that sack of tools they send to assemble the bike when you ride it. You never know when you’ll need them. Sharp turns are almost impossible for me on this bike but wow I love it!!! I can cycle up and down trails till the cows come home. Trails I never could cycle up before. Love that! A super great buy and I’m so glad I got it. And they had super great customer service to help me learn how to use the charger. Did I mention I’d never used an ebike before?

Hi Charlie,

Thanks for sharing your experiences, glad you’re out there enjoying your bike👍

All the best, Tony

Bought my new Moscow bike from Amazon but not long before I had problems with coffee grinder noise and serious vibration, found the cable from the controller to the back wheel had been routed too close to the drive sprocket and had chafed through causing broken wires and short circuits. Leon cycles Germany took the wheel back, but no better, a new controller followed, no better, they then told me I needed a new back wheel and motor, or a rebuilt motor, but due to Brexit they could not help any more. I now have a bike which will run perfectly when running but can take 20+ attempts to get started without grating and vibrating. Can anybody help?

I know this is an old review but I thought I’d ask my question anyway. If it get a reply, good; if not, that’s OK too. I bought a Moscow Plus late in 2020. It’s worked out very well for me. Now that I’ve owned it for a while and gotten the feel of it I’ve worked my riding stamina up to where I’m ready to ride farther and farther out. I love to fish so at some point I hope to make the trek to my nearest trout fishing stream which is approximately 30 or so miles one way. The terrain to get there is generally flat ground with one long stretch of about a mile and a half being a good downhill grade.

For an earth-bound bike rider that’s as close to flying as I’m ever going to get but, I temper that with the knowledge that on the way back I’ll have to hump it a bit to get back up that hill.

All of that to ask; Has anyone that you know of ever ridden their Moscow Plus starting with a full charge, on battery power alone to see exactly how far it would take them on generally flat terrain?

I plan on purchasing a spare OEM battery latter on this year so I won’t be able to do this battery endurance test until I have that spare battery to get me back home. In the mean time I just though I’d ask if anyone has already done this type of test. I could save me the trouble of doing it myself.

Thanks. Tim M.

Buying a new battery, if you can find one is £500.00 plus a bit, so if I were you I would stay close to home and do circuits for for a couple of hours at a time until the battery runs out of power, then walk back home using the walk mode ( there should be enough left in the battery to do that).
