But the most unique feature of this extra-long trailer has to be its distinctive floorplan, which offers two separate bedrooms, with a king bed in the front and a queen bed in the rear.

Making this trailer perfect for two couples or two individuals traveling together, by providing each party with their own private space.

It’s not just the two separate bedrooms that make this travel trailer’s floor plan great though.

Gulf Stream Trailmaster Supreme 33DBDB Interior

As this Gulf Stream camper also has two full bathrooms as well.

The Forest River Cherokee 324TS is the second-longest travel trailer, with a length of 40 feet 5 inches .

Only missing the longest designation by a mere two inches.

Even though this trailer came in second place in length, there’s nothing second place about this Cherokee’s features and amenities.

As the Cherokee 324TS uses every inch of its length to maximize sleeping capacity, comfort, and enjoyment.

Starting first with its sleeping capability, the Cherokee 324TS offers a massive 11-person sleeping capacity, thanks to its bunkhouse layout.

Offering a large rear bunkhouse that can sleep up to five all by itself.

 • Dry Weight : 8,135 Pounds
 • Gross Vehicle Weight Rating : 9,850 Pounds
 • Slide-Outs : 2
 • Sleeping Capacity : 5

At 40 feet 4 inches, the Jayco Jay Flight 380DQS is the 3rd longest travel trailer you can buy.

Which feels a lot like a destination trailer, thanks to its full-size sliding glass door in the center of the trailer.

However, due to its onboard batteries, 60-pound propane capacity, 40-gallon freshwater, 32.5-gallon grey water, and 39-gallon black water tank, the camper meets all the requirements for a self-contained travel trailer.

Jayco Jay Flight 380DQS Floorplan

Jayco Jay Flight 380DQS Floorplan

Offered in several layout options, this Jayco Jay Flight comes standard as a two-bedroom trailer, with a front and rear bedroom, each with a queen bed.

However, one of the most popular layouts for the trailer is the optional front bunk room floorplan, which brings the total sleeping capacity of the 380DQS to nine.

Making this long travel trailer from Jayco great for large families .

To see other travel trailers with large sleeping capacities, check out our blog post “ 12 Must-See 3 Bedroom RVs (With Videos and Pricing) “.

Jayco Jay Flight 380DQS Kitchen

This large travel trailer also has a very open and airy feel, thanks to its two slide-outs, ample floor space, and full-size sliding glass door, which brings in a ton of natural light.

And because the camper is a Jayco, it also offers several Jayco-exclusive features.

Including such upgrades as a custom frame, a rock-solid stabilizer system, a Magnum Truss roof system, and JAYCOMMAND, which allows you to control/monitor the RV from your phone or tablet from just about anywhere.

 • Length : 40 Feet 1 Inch
 • Dry Weight : 10,725 Pounds
 • Gross Vehicle Weight Rating : 12,250 Pounds
 • Sleeping Capacity : 4

The 4th longest travel trailer is another Jayco, however, the Eagle 332CBOK, couldn’t be more different from the above Jay Flight 380DQS.

Because while both campers are super long, they have entirely different layouts, focusing on entirely different functionality.

As the Jay Flight 380DQS focuses on maximizing sleeping capacity, while the Eagle 332CBOK focuses on maximizing the comfort for two.

Making the Jayco Eagle 332CBOK the ultimate couple’s camper .

Jayco Eagle 332CBOK Floorplan

Jayco Eagle 332CBOK Floorplan

But what makes the Eagle 332CBOK the ultimate couple’s camper, beyond its large size?

Well, it turns out, quite a few things.

Starting with the camper’s well-laid-out floorplan.

As the 332CBOK floorplan offers a private front bedroom with an upgraded east-to-west king bed on a slide, a stand-alone dresser with a 32-inch TV, and a large front wardrobe with washer/dryer prep.

Plus, the trailer also provides one of the best main living areas for couples on the market.

Offering opposing slide-outs, theatre seating opposite a well-appointed entertainment center with a fireplace, and a free-standing kitchen table.

As well as a fully equipped rear L-shaped kitchen with a large center island and a 21 cubic-foot residential refrigerator.

Jayco Eagle 332CBOK Interior

The features don’t stop there though on this Jayco Eagle.

Because like the above Jay Flight, the Eagle offers several class-leading exclusive features.

Including such upgrades as a custom frame, a Magnum Truss roof system, a rock-solid stabilizer system, and JAYCOMMAND, which allows you to monitor and control the RV from your phone or tablet.

5th Longest Travel Trailer: Forest River Vibe 34XL

 • Length : 39 Feet 10 Inches
 • Dry Weight : 8,518 Pounds
 • Gross Vehicle Weight Rating : 9,685 Pounds
 • Sleeping Capacity : 4/6

The Forest River Vibe 34XL, the 5th longest travel trailer offers a very similar floorplan to the above Jayco Eagle 332CBOK.

Making this camper another great choice for anyone looking for the ultimate couple’s camper .

Because just like the Eagle 332CBOK, the Vibe 34XL offers a private front bedroom with an east-to-west bed on a slide, as well as a spacious main living area with opposing slide-outs and a large rear L-shaped kitchen.

Forest River Vibe 34XL Floorplan

Forest River Vibe 34XL Floorplan

There are a few key differences between these two large travel trailers though, starting with their sleeping capacity.

As the Vibe 34XL can sleep an extra two, when equipped with its standard convertible dinette booth, bringing the total sleeping capacity to six.

Speaking of sleeping though, one disadvantage of the 34XL is that it only offers a front queen as opposed to a king bed.

Forest River Vibe 34XL Interior

In addition, the washer/dryer prep in the 34XL was moved to the bathroom, instead of in the front wardrobe.

And the last big difference between the two trailers is that Forest River opted to reduce the size of the fridge in the 34XL to make room for a small flip-up desk.

Allowing the Vibe 34XL to offer a small workspace for those that need to work from the road.

 • Length : 39 Feet 3 Inches
 • Dry Weight : 8,583 Pounds
 • Gross Vehicle Weight Rating : 10,110 Pounds
 • Sleeping Capacity : 10

At 39 feet 3 inches long, the Forest River Salem Hemisphere 314BUD is the 6th longest travel trailer.

Making a great choice for large families, the Salem Hemisphere 314BUD is one of the most popular full-size bunkhouse campers on the market.

Offering up to a 10-person sleeping capacity, thanks to its large rear bunkhouse, convertible U-shaped dinette booth, tri-fold sofa, and queen-size bed.

Forest River Salem Hemisphere 314BUD Floorplan

Forest River Salem Hemisphere 314BUD Floorplan

There’s more to this Salem Hemisphere than just a high sleeping capacity though, as the camper is also loaded with comfort and convenience features.

Including such features as two large slide-outs, dual entrances one of which leads directly into a bathroom, a well-equipped L-shaped kitchen, and a full-wall entertainment center with a 50-inch TV and an electric fireplace.

One of my favorite features of this Forest River travel trailer though is its two bathrooms.

Forest River Salem Hemisphere 314BUD Interior

As the 314BUD offers both a spacious main full bath as well as a smaller rear half bath, which as mentioned above can be accessed from an exterior door.

Also, if you like to spend most of your time outside while camping, this large Salem trailer has you covered.

As the trailer offers a massive 18-foot awning, as well as an outdoor kitchen with a fridge, griddle, and LP quick connect.

 • Length : 38 Feet 11 Inches
 • Dry Weight : 9,582 Pounds
 • Gross Vehicle Weight Rating : 11,000 Pounds
 • Sleeping Capacity : 6/8

Coming in at number seven, the 7th longest travel trailer is the Winnebago Voyage V3538BR, which is another popular bunkhouse camper .

Offering a large rear bunkhouse with a slide-out and sleeping for up to four, thanks to two upper single bunks and a tri-fold sofa.

Where this bunkhouse camper really shines though is in its main living area.

Winnebago Voyage V3538BR Floorplan

Winnebago Voyage V3538BR Floorplan

Because while most living rooms in bunkhouse campers are often an afterthought, Winnebago went above and beyond to offer not only one of the largest but one of the best.

By giving the living room in the Voyage V3538BR, opposing slide-outs, a well-equipped kitchen with a center island, a large dinette booth or a free-standing table, and theatre seating directly across from a full-height entertainment center.

Winnebago Voyage V3538BR Interior

And to complete this flagship bunkhouse camper, Winnebago topped the trailer off with a spacious private front owner’s suite offering a queen or optional king bed, dual wardrobes/nightstands, and a large wardrobe closet with washer/dryer prep.

 • Average Cost : $40,000
 • Length : 38 Feet 6 Inches
 • Dry Weight : 8,498 Pounds
 • Gross Vehicle Weight Rating : 10,800 Pounds

Rounding out this list of the longest travel trailers is the 8th longest, the Coachmen Catalina Legacy Edition 343BHTS .

Which seems only fitting.

As this Catalina Legacy Edition has the same layout as the first trailer on this list, the Gulf Stream Trailmaster Supreme 33DBDB.

As both travel trailers have the same unique two-bedroom layout, with an east-to-west queen bed on a slide, in both the front and rear bedrooms .

Making the Catalina Legacy Edition 343BHTS perfect for two couples traveling together, like the above Trailmaster Supreme 33DBDB.

As both trailers provide each couple with their own private space inside the camper.

Coachmen Catalina Legacy Edition 343BHTS Floorplan

Coachmen Catalina Legacy Edition 343BHTS Floorplan

Where the Catalina Legacy Edition 343BHTS has the edge over the Trailmaster Supreme 33DBDB is on price.

As the 343BHTS is on average $10,000 cheaper compared to the 33DBDB.

Making the Coachmen Catalina Legacy Edition 343BHTS the superior choice for those shopping for a large travel trailer on a budget .

Coachmen Catalina Legacy Edition 343BHTS Interior

Just because the 343BHTS has a more budget-friendly price though, doesn’t mean it’s a bare-bones camper.

As this large Coachmen Catalina is loaded with features and amenities.

Including such features as a fully-equipped L-shaped kitchen with a peninsula, a full-height entertainment center, ample interior/exterior storage space, a standard exterior cargo rack, and washer/dryer prep.

10 Best Travel Trailers For Large Families

10 Best Travel Trailers For Large Families 1

Camping with a large family can be a fun experience. However, it can also be quite challenging to make sure that everyone has their own space without being too crowded. With such a wide variety of styles and brands on the market, which ones are the best for larger families?

You also need to take into consideration how big your family is. Whether it be 4, 6, or even 10 people you need to accommodate, here are 10 travel trailers that are great for that large family.

Some of these are pricier than others. They also vary greatly in size and layout. Remember, there’s not a one size fits all travel trailer that works for every family. Look at your family’s needs, what you want to spend, and the size range that you are wanting. After all, what you consider essential may not be the case for the next family.

These trailers will require a large truck to haul. Most of these will weigh at least 8000 lbs. dry. Once you load it up with water and all your supplies, you could easily be looking at a load exceeding 10, 000 lbs. Something like a Ford F250, F350, F450 or Ram 2500, Chev Silverado 2500HD, or a Toyota Tundra or Nissan Titan is something you will want to consider. Remember that when it comes to towing a Diesel will tow more than a gas counterpart. Do your research, you will want to make sure you have a little more room in the towing than to max it out at what the truck can handle in towing .

Here are some of the 10 best travel trailers for large families on the market today. We’ll go over the best features as well as what we liked and disliked about each.

Quick Navigation

Jayco jay sport 12ud, shasta oasis 18bh travel trailer, keystone outback ultra lite 210urs, keystone hideout travel trailer 272lhs.

 • Coachmen Freedom Express Travel Trailer292BHDS

Keystone Passport 2950BHWE GT Travel Trailer

Palomino puma 32rbfq travel trailer, forest river salem 31kqbts, dutchmen aspen trail 3680 flds travel trailer, keystone hideout 38fqts travel trailer, choosing a trailer for your family.

When deciding which trailer will be the best fit for your family, you need to first determine how much your truck can tow and how big of an area you can store it. It is also a good idea to come up with a budget. These can get expensive fast. You would hate to fall in love with one unit just to find that you can’t feasibly make the purchase.

I like the budget friendly, Jayco Jay Sport 12UD. It is the smallest travel trailer that we are going to look at today. This is a tent-style trailer meaning that it is not only lightweight, but it will also fold down small while in storage. There are 2 large beds on either end of this trailer that both folds out when set up. It is also unique in that it has two different dinettes-a standard one and a u-shaped one. Both of these fold down into additional sleeping space.

10 Best Travel Trailers For Large Families 2

Specifications Include:

 • Sleeps up to 8
 • Unloaded Vehicle Weight-1895 lbs

 • Rear Bunk-54 x 80
 • Interior Height-80 1/2″

 • Approximate price $15 067

Cons Include:

 • No washroom
 • Less protection from weather and wildlife
 • More time to set up
 • Less storage space when folded down for travel

Another great feature of this is its weight or lack thereof. This can easily be towed by smaller SUVs. You will also have a much easier time seeing around you and backing it up. If you are worried about bears, I suggest checking out this link . It has a lot of great information and tips to help keep you safe.

The Shasta Oasis is another small unit with big potential. The length is only 22’5″ making this a great candidate to fit into smaller sites. For this reason, I think this is suitable for a wider range of areas and campsites that you can visit without needing to worry about fitting. Not only this, but it is also the most lightweight and can be pulled with a smaller, half-ton truck or a larger SUV. There is a 60 X74 master bed located at the front of the trailer as well as a dinette the converts into a bed. This is a bunk model with 2 small beds of 26X74 at the back.

 • No slide outs
 • Smaller tank sizes
 • Not as many features

This is a base model of camper when compared to many others. Due to this, I found the price to be quite a bit lower than other trailers. However, this can make the areas squishier when housing 4 or more occupants. You may also want to consider a campsite with sewer hookups if you are wanting an extended stay. If you are just starting out and are unsure of how your sewage system works check out How To Dump Your Dark & Grey Water Tanks In 21 Easy Steps.

This Keystone camper has a layout different from any other travel trailer. The master bed comes in a king size giving you plenty of room to stretch out at night. While there is a slide-out, it doesn’t pop out of the side but out of the back. This is where the large bed is. What this means, is that the camper is smaller in length when in storage but still has all solid walls, unlike a tent trailer or hybrid trailer. Other sleeping areas include small-sized bunk beds located at the front, as well as a dinette and sofa sleeper off of the kitchen area. The overall weight of this camper is fairly low making this ideal to tow with a half-ton truck or higher. The low hitch weight is also a bonus.

This Keystone Hideout is perfect for the family with the ability to clean up easily with the built-in central vac system and a hidden laundry chute. The electric, 120-volt fireplace offers a comfortable place to warm up and relax on those cooler nights. The front contains a queen-sized bed. Meanwhile, in the back is a large set of bunk beds measuring 52″X74″. These have a convenient ladder built into them for easy access for young children. There are also two entrances to this unit. The front one uses solid step technology to eliminate trailer bounce as you are entering and exiting. The back one conveniently enters straight into the bathroom.

10 Best Travel Trailers For Large Families 5

There is also a dinette as well as a jackknife sofa which will both fold down into beds. These give the trailer the capacity to house 6 people comfortably.

There is a bunk room with 3 additional beds in a separate room at the back. This room is handy in that it contains its own wardrobe area.

Once you start to get into the 30’ campers, you may start to have issues with parking. Check to see the size of the campsite as well as where you are wanting to store this beforehand.

This is the most popular version of the Keystone Passport trailers. This unit can sleep up to 10 people. By utilizing the queen bed located at the front of the trailer, as well as the large bunk beds at the back which measure 51″ X 74″ you have plenty of space for the family without needing a lot of set-ups. Should you decide you need a little more sleep space, the u-shaped dinette offers a larger sleeping area than standard-sized tables. This also comes with the option of either a tri-fold sofa sleeper or theatre seating. If you go with the theatre style, keep in mind that they will no longer fold down into a bed but will be comfortable for reclining in to relax and watch tv.

10 Best Travel Trailers For Large Families 7

This unit is nice as it is light in weight. Even full, it does not exceed the 10000 lb mark. This makes it easier for hauling with a 3/4 ton truck or larger. This varies slightly depending on the make and model. While it is a few feet shorter, it also has a much lower hitch weight than the Keystone Hideout. This makes it compatible with a higher range of trucks as well as able to fit in more campsites. The table and couch both slide out for extra floor space when set up. This unit is also handy for its double entrances. One leads into the kitchen of the trailer while the second one goes directly into the bathroom. Unlike many new models, this bathroom still features a bathtub and shower combo for bathing those young children. The bunk beds come with a built-in ladder for easy access. There is also lift up storage under the bottom bed as well as a cargo door for storing larger items while traveling. Hyperdeck flooring offers additional peace of mind with its high performance, waterproof features. No need to worry about unseen spills or a roof vent being left open in the rain.

 • Sleeps up to 10 people

 • Carrying capacity-1524 lbs.
 • Hitch weight-704 lbs.

 • Approximate price $33 794
 • Small waste water tank
 • Long in length, may be harder to store as well as take to certain campsites
 • No solid door separating bunk beds, only a curtain
 • Long in length

While a smaller fridge isn’t necessarily a deal breaker, it might mean that you need to do some shopping in the middle of your trip. This is especially true if your large family is staying for an extended period of time.

The Palomino Puma trailers offer a spacious living area with various amenities to make your trip more comfortable. It has 3 large slides to maximize your area when set up. The master bedroom contains a high-density foam mattress for extra comfort as well as a slide. This gives it the ability to have a wardrobe as well as tons of closet space. Also, the unit can host a second air conditioning unit in here should you be camping in hot climates.

There is also a separate bunkhouse with a solid closing door for each bedroom for a more peaceful night. This room has 2 upper bunk beds as well as a fold-down sofa. There is a wardrobe with extra storage space for clothes and an area for a separate television. In the main area, the couch and table both slide out for more floor space. These both fold down into yet another 2 beds. The L-shaped table adds for a larger sized bed when folded down. This unit also contains a full outdoor kitchen with a cooktop, microwave, sink, and refrigerator. This is great for both cooking and cleaning up. However, unlike the fridge inside the camper, this one will only work when hooked up to a 110-volt power source.

Even though your truck may have the weight rating for this camper, it may not have the hitch rating. Check you user’s manual beforehand to ensure you aren’t at risk of damage or an accident if you haul this unit. Also, having no bathtub can be inconvenient for families with especially young children who need to get washed up.

Forest River offers a premium bunkhouse camper for large families. The three massive slide outs add tons of extra live-in space. This first slide bumps out the u-shaped dinette and couch. Both of these fold down into additional beds. The second and third slides are both located at the back of the trailer in the bunkhouse. These bump out 2 separate sets of bunk beds for a total of 4 more beds. There is also an option to switch one of these beds out for another couch. The ground space left behind as a result of these slides leads to a large entertainment center complete with extra storage and a television.

10 Best Travel Trailers For Large Families 9

On top of this, there is also a master bedroom located at the front of the trailer. This additional room contains a queen-sized bed.

 • Hitch weight-905 lb.
 • UVW-8573 lb.
 • CCC-1292 lb.
 • Exterior length-36’6″
 • Exterior height-11’3″
 • Freshwater tank-39 gal

 • Blackwater tank-27 gal
 • Approximate price $39 522
 • Heavy to haul
 • Unit is long making it harder to drive with, park, store and fit into campsites
 • Small black water tank

The length of this unit can make it especially hard for some families. While it does offer a lot of live-in space, parking, towing and storing can all be difficult.

Dutchmen has one of the widest ranges of travel trailers meant for larger groups. While they do have a few smaller models, the majority of them sleep at least 6 people with the larger models allowing up to 10. The Dutchmen Aspen Trail 3680 FLDS can sleep up to 10 people comfortably. The queen-sized master bedroom is located at the back of the camper. This is a spacious room as the head of the bed is a slide-out. This room is equipped for a second ac unit should you desire to have one.

10 Best Travel Trailers For Large Families 10

There are two entrances. A large awning has the advantage of covering both of these doors to ensure optimal coverage. The back one leads either into the bathroom or this bedroom. The front entrance boasts a sliding, glass patio style door. This leads to the main part of the camper. There is a fold-down couch as well as a table. These are both located on the second slide out. At the very front of the camper is another L-shaped couch located in front of a 110-volt electric fireplace. This folds down into an even larger bed then the queen-sized one. This camper is unique in that it comes set up for two different types of rear cameras. The first one is used for backing up the unit while the other one is to monitor the traffic behind you. This is especially handy when hauling a unit as large as this one due to the lack of vision it causes.

 • Length39′ 9″
 • Height (with AC)11′ 5″
 • Shipping Weight (Average)8,310 lbs.
 • CCC weight 2392 lbs.
 • Hitch weight-872 lbs.
 • Cargo Carrying Capacity1,518 lbs.

 • Grey Water Capacity78 gals.
 • Waste Water Capacity42 gals.
 • Awning Length20′
 • Refrigerator Size18 cubic feet
 • 2-20 lb. propane tanks
 • 50-amp hook-up
 • Approximate price $36 402
 • Lack of light switches
 • Large (long)
 • Overall weight is heavy
 • Only set up for 2-20lb. propane tanks

When considering this unit, make sure to note the size of it. Depending on where you plan to camp, there may be areas or campsites that you will not fit. You will also need to think about the best place to store something as large as this. There is only one light switch inside the main door and that is all. Every light is located on the ceiling and must be turned on by pushing a button in the middle of it. This can be problematic for either young children or for those who are shorter in size.

Keystone Hideout 38 FQTS can accommodate up to 8 people. This unit is unique in that it has 2 master bedroom areas. These both contain a queen-sized bed. In the rear one, the headboard slides out for extra floor space. With the room at the front of the trailer, the closet slides out for additional storage space.

10 Best Travel Trailers For Large Families 11

This unit also has a third slide which takes out the table and sofa. While both of these can fold down into beds, there is also an option to switch out the table for a free-standing one. However, if you take this option, you should be aware that the table will no longer act as a bed. On the other hand, you can move this table around. This feature can come in handy for a place to sit down and eat outdoors instead of inside.Easy cleaning is essential when traveling with a large group. For that reason, Keystone has added in a central vac system as well as a hidden laundry chute to their new campers. The ladder on the back gives easy access to the walk-on roof for any repair work needing to be done or to simply fetch that frisby that has gone astray. There are also locations ready for solar panel hookups for the freedom to trickle charge your batteries all day long. The back and sides are both prepped should you desire to add on cameras for easier viewing.

 • Sleeps up to 8 occupants
 • Shipping weight-9291 lbs.
 • Hitch weight-1200
 • Length-39′ 11″
 • Height-11′ 4″
 • Freshwater tank-43 gallons
 • Waste water-78 gallons
 • Grey water-78 gallons
 • Propane 2-30 lbs.
 • Interior height 81″
 • 12 Volt 55-amp converter
 • 13.5K BTU air conditioner
 • 4 1/2” Crowned roof
 • Approximate price $40 688
 • A heavy hitch weights
 • Long making it hard to store, tow and fit into many campsites
 • A heavy overall weight
 • Awning is not long enough to cover the second entrance

The hitch weight on this trailer is quite a bit higher than any of the others covered. At 1200 lbs., many trucks will not be able to handle this unit even though they may have the towing capacity for the overall weight. Your best option is to not use anything smaller than a one-ton truck. If you happen to have a diesel engine, even better. Attempting to tow this with anything not rated for the hitch weight will greatly increase your risk of either damage to the truck or an accident.

While these all sleep 6 people or more, they come in a ton of different layouts, price ranges, and sizes. You have to decide how much you would like to spend as well as your primary usage. If you are wanting more pro-longed stays, you may find a larger model with more features more comfortable. On the other hand, if you don’t have a large space to store the unit, don’t have a vehicle with a high towing capacity, or if you are simply intending on camping in more cramped areas, you will certainly benefit from a smaller model. It all depends on your family and personal preference.

That’s our list of the most innovative new lightweight travel trailers of 2022. These small RV models are big on affordability, convenience, and amenities.

As a bonus, the features are packaged in a small camper footprint. In most cases, you won’t need to purchase a tow vehicle for these trailers. To find out how much weight your car can pull, open your vehicle’s manual. Look for the maximum trailer towing capacity and you’ll find the answer.

Why lightweight travel trailers are in demand

If you’re thinking about buying one of these lightweight travel trailers, you’re in good company. Demand for big and small RV models is soaring.

For example, according to the latest issue of RV RoadSigns , the quarterly sales forecast published by the RV Industry Association (RVIA), RV manufacturers are still scrambling to meet consumer demand that started in 2020. This year, more than 600,000 new RVs will be sold. These figures are all-time high that will exceed the record-breaking RV sales of 2021.

“The remarkable production from the RV manufacturers and suppliers is nothing like we have ever seen before, and our new forecast shows the record-breaking streak will continue,” said RVIA President and CEO Craig Kirby.

Editor’s note: RV manufacturer materials costs are constantly increasing. The current base costs for the small, light travel trailers on our list may have changed since the time of this writing (Q4 2021).

Ways to Get the Most RV For Your Money

Posted: January 21, 2024 | Last updated: January 21, 2024

The best deals on recreational vehicles tend to come in the fall. If you’re looking, the time to cash in on discounts may be now. But no amount of luck and money saved will be worth the bargain if you come home with the wrong rig and a serious case of buyer’s remorse. We consulted the experts, including people who live in them, love them, sell them, rent them, and write about them while traveling full time, to help you understand some of the most critical considerations and hidden costs. (It’s important to note that several of the experts profiled here, like so many members of the general public, use the term RV interchangeably with motorhomes and trailers.)

Cash for Camping

If you're planning to go big, a new Class A motorhome starts — yes, starts — around $40,000 to $200,000, according to Camper Guide; with all the bells and whistles, they can push a million bucks. One of the most expensive, the Elemment Palazzo, comes in at a whopping $3 million. Smaller motorhomes won't approach seven figures, but still range from about $40,000 to $100,000. Travel trailers, pop-up campers, and fifth wheels are more economical, starting around $10,000 to $15,000 and topping out around $50,000.

Savings Tip: Joining an RV membership club can save you on camping fees, RV accessories, and even gas. Know Your Options

There are so many RV options that are such big commitments that confusion can be a buyer’s greatest enemy. RVs can generally be broken into two categories : motorhomes and campers/trailers. That’s a broad generalization, so below we have a basic rundown of each of the primary options within those two umbrella categories. You, of course, will have to expand on this guide by doing your own research.

Motorhomes are distinguished by being self-propelled — they are motor vehicles outfitted with living space. Depending on the class, that living space could range from fairly spartan to ultra-luxurious.

Class C motorhomes stand out for their traditional cab-over layout. They have many of the same features and amenities as Class A RVs, such as kitchens, bathrooms, and sleeping quarters. Those features are smaller, however, because Class Cs are smaller — usually between 20 and 30 feet long. They’re also cheaper, easier to drive, and more accessible.

Campers/Trailers

These trailers attach to a special “fifth-wheel” hitch in the bed of the big, powerful trucks that are required to pull them. The biggest trailers you can buy, they get their characteristic look from their raised, forward living/sleeping quarters.

Mention an "RV," and images of massive, gas-guzzling homes on wheels that appeal mainly to those nearing retirement is what might first come to mind. But an industry trend driven by — who else? — millennials is seeing recreational-vehicle profiles getting "smaller, sleeker with more technology built in," Recreational Vehicle Industry Association spokesman Kevin Broom told The Spokesman-Review in 2019. Cheapism has rounded up a few of these tiny RVs that are turning heads, at a number of different prices, from more affordable trailers that cost less than $15,000 to luxury motorhomes that ring up at a staggering $500,000.

Related: 25 Mistakes to Avoid When Buying an RV

Light enough to tow with family vehicles, pop-up campers extend up and out to transform into big tents that don’t have to touch the ground. They have a hard base and canvas body and have been the staples of budget-minded camping families for generations.

Considerations: The Big Three

Trying to narrow the options down to the exact RV that’s right for you can be a daunting and overwhelming task. You can clear the clutter by concentrating on the primary factors that will help make a decision for you. “Financially speaking, there are three main considerations to look at when comparing an RV/motorhome and a camper/trailer,” says Tory Jon, owner of Camper FAQs . “How often will you use it, do you already have a vehicle that will tow a trailer, and costs, both upfront and running costs.”

Try before you buy — consider rental options at sites such as RVshare .

Most buyers’ budgets will determine their options, and motorhomes cost big bucks. “A nice motorhome fully decked out can cost $100,000 or more,” Jon says. “That’s a lot of money for a vehicle that will just sit in your driveway most of the year. Whereas a nice travel trailer will run about $20,000, so it might make more sense for a low-usage situation.”

Motorhomes Are Generally Much More Expensive to Buy

Just like cars, RVs come with two sets of expenses: the purchase price and the many other ongoing and long-term costs. “Upfront costs aside, with both motorhomes and travel trailers you will have maintenance, gas, insurance, depreciation, and various other fees,” Jon says. “And travel trailers beat motorhomes in almost every category. As a general maintenance rule, motorhomes have more things that can break. And the more decked out your motorhome is, the more that holds true. Plus, if you need to take your vehicle in for maintenance, your living quarters goes with it.”

Motorhomes Are Also More Expensive to Own

Bigger Is Not Always Better

It’s natural for newbies to spring for as much RV as they can possibly afford. This is almost never a good strategy. “The bigger and more expensive your vehicle is, the higher the insurance costs will be, so expect to pay more for a motorhome than a travel trailer,” Jon says. “Depreciation should be expected with most any vehicle purchased and is often overlooked. Just keep in mind that motorhomes have odometers and the more miles clocked, the faster it typically depreciates, giving the advantage to travel trailers.”

With motorhomes clearly established as the more affordable option, consider question No. 2 before you start looking into cost-effective trailers: Do you have a vehicle capable of towing it, or will you need to buy one? “If you already have a vehicle that will tow a travel trailer you can save on the upfront costs, as towable trailers are much less expensive than a motorhome,” Jon says.

Towables Must be Towed by Capable Vehicles

Cost aside, it’s hard not to be at least a little bit envious when you spot a family cruising in a big, hulking motorhome during your daily commute, and for good reason. They are, in a word, enviable. “Entire families can be together on long road trips,” says Keith Dix, owner of Touchdown RV in Indiana. “Motorhomes usually contain more amenities, such as a generator for power, and are usually more luxurious, with more space.”

Motorhomes are a one-and-done vehicle. When you find the one that suits your needs, all that’s left to do is plan a trip. “A lot of people prefer the overall package of an RV because it’s built-in and ready to go,” says Michael Lowe, CEO of Car Passionate. “It also allows people to make use of the ‘home’ aspect of the motorhome while staying in the same space as the driver.”

The Complete Package Isn’t Always a Good Thing

“Choosing a class A motorhome actually has more cons when it comes to insurance and gas because it is much more expensive to maintain,” says Mollie Newton, founder of Pet Me Twice, who has been living the RV lifestyle for three years. “However, the class C motorhome may be more accessible than a class A because the former is much smaller, so I suggest you can start off with that. Plus, motorhomes do give more comfort.”

An RV is one more thing you’re required to insure — and your choice will have a lot to do with the premiums you’ll have to pay. “Insurance on trailers is more affordable since it’s technically not considered a motor vehicle, making RV insurance more expensive in comparison,” says Lindsey Maxwell, co-founder of Where You Make It, which covers topics such as full-time RV travel, van life, and converting vehicles.

Also, consider signing up for a roadside assistance service. AAA offers RV coverage as an add-on, and Good Sam Roadside Assistance is a favorite with many RVers.

RVs are all-inclusive because the living space is one with the vehicle, but that reality can also be a drawback. “Some people may prefer campers because the space isn’t built around the vehicle,” Lowe says. “Each aspect of it is built to feel homey and isn’t restricted.”

Campers Can Be Cozier

Although budget realities set the buying parameters, money isn’t the only consideration. Let your RVing plans serve as your guide. “If you plan to travel with a group of more than a few people, roominess has to play a role in your decision making,” says Gigi Stetler, who created and leads the first female-owned RV company in the United States, RV Sales of Broward, and has 30 years of experience in the industry. “Class A and C RVs can be quite spacious, allowing everyone to spread out. Class B rigs aren’t much bigger than vans, so they’re more suitable for two people. The bigger travel trailers are also quite roomy, and often provide even more space than Class A and C rigs. But trailers can get cramped with more than a few bodies in there. And of course, we can’t forget to mention the bathroom. If you intend to drive for long stretches, you won’t have to worry about stopping to use the facilities with a motorhome.”

Related: 32 RV Accessories to Make Road Life More Luxurious

Let Your Purpose Determine Your Purchase

Buyers have a tendency to imagine themselves on the open road, cruising into the RV lifestyle without looking back — but the open road doesn’t always feel so open when you’re driving or towing something as big as an RV. “Everyone dreams about driving a big rig across the country, but anything over 26 feet or 4,500 pounds will severely restrict your ability to drive, park, or enjoy national parks,” says Geneva Long, founder and CEO of luxury travel-trailer company Bowlus. “It’s also a guaranteed unpleasant experience once you add in high winds, poor driving conditions, heavy traffic, and limited camping locations due to your oversize. Conversely, a travel trailer tends to be much more lightweight and easier to tow than a motorhome, so the aforementioned should be non-issues.”

Keep in Mind, You Do Have to Drive the Thing

Motorhomes cost more, but they’re less involved on the front and back ends when it comes to getting on and off the road. “When you get to your destination in a motorhome, setup might just consist of hooking up the utilities and stabilizing the unit,” Stetler says. “The same applies to a trailer, with one big added step: unhitching, which can be a lengthy process. And as for teardown, again, with a motorhome this is usually pretty quick, but it will take some time with a trailer.”

Ashley Mann is the owner of RVinspiration, an RV living blog with a slant toward interior organizing, decor, and modifications. She and her husband spent three years living full-time in a 28-foot fifth-wheel camper. “In terms of saving money, I strongly encourage people to buy used instead of new,” Mann says. “When we bought our RV, we were afraid of buying something more than a few years old because we didn’t want to be stuck with a lot of repairs. But knowing what great shape our RV was in when we sold it at 11 years old, I wouldn’t hesitate to look at something that old if I were to buy again, because the cost difference is huge … older RV’s can be every bit as nice as or even nicer than brand new ones if you remodel them.”
Related: Where to Buy an RV Across America

Buying Used Can Make a Lot of Sense

If you're not a full-time RVer, now is not the time to plan or embark on any trips, says Angela Neylon, who RVs full-time with her husband, Bill, and their dogs Henry and Cailin. "My father-in-law heard about people renting RVs to leave a bigger city to go quarantine at parks in Arizona and Nevada. If you are not a full-time RVer, I do not recommend doing this," Neylon notes. "I understand the appeal. If you travel in an RV, it's pretty easy to stay isolated on the road. However, with spots at parks being so limited right now, those spots need to be saved for full-timers."

If You Do Buy Used, Be Thorough

Before you buy a new RV, or even a used one, consider getting a feel for the vehicle or trailer, not to mention the lifestyle, by renting before you dive in. “In my opinion, the biggest mistake first-time RVers make when choosing a vehicle is buying one,” says Fabio Rosato, founder of Roadologist.com. “You see, all of those aspects to consider, those features to compare, and those decisions to make, they are all really an issue if you’re buying the RV. But ask yourself, do you really need to buy it? Unless you plan on living in it, or you plan to travel with it more than a couple of times a year, buying it may not be the best decision, both economically and practically.”

Consider Renting at First

Camper vans are the smallest motorhomes, which provide many of the best benefits of self-propelled RVs and trailers — and can be affordable and practical. “If you’re trying to save money, then buying a camper van is the way to go,” says Kate Moore, who founded the travel blog Parked in Paradise and lived in a camper van for two years. “They have simpler plumbing, heating, and cooling systems so there is less to go wrong — not to mention the gas mileage. Camper vans are less expensive upfront, and won’t require storage fees in the off-season. You will be sacrificing a bit of comfort traveling in a camper as opposed to a full RV. But the compact size means you can fit in smaller campgrounds and go on more rugged adventures.”

Camper Vans Can Be a Happy Medium

When it comes to motorhomes, bigger is not necessarily better — in fact, small Class B vehicles have access to many more places. “Staying at established campgrounds can add up quite a bit over time, and it’s a cost that people don’t often think about up front,” says Katie Diederichs, a travel blogger and founder of Two Wandering Soles. “One of the biggest benefits of owning a camper van, as opposed to an RV or tow-behind trailer, is that you have many more options when it comes to finding a free place to park for the night. From urban camping to BLM land to Forest Service Roads, it is actually quite easy to find free places to stay with a camper van. The larger your rig, the more difficult it is to find a place to park for the night.”

Camper Vans Offer Greater Access

Diederichs self-converted two camper vans on two very different budgets, proving that it’s possible for just about anyone to live the lifestyle — depending on what they’re willing to sacrifice and what they can’t go without. “The first camper van my husband and I converted cost less than $3,000 in total for the vehicle and the build,” Diederichs says. “In exchange for the low budget, we had to give up some luxuries — like having a toilet. The second camper van we converted was done on a much higher budget, so we were able to install solar panels, a fancy kitchen, and a composting toilet.”

Cash-Strapped DIYers Should Consider Camper Van Conversion

Diederichs self-converted two camper vans on two very different budgets, proving that it’s possible for just about anyone to live the lifestyle — depending on what they’re willing to sacrifice and what they can’t go without. “The first camper van my husband and I converted cost less than $3,000 in total for the vehicle and the build,” Diederichs says. “In exchange for the low budget, we had to give up some luxuries — like having a toilet. If you do decide to do your own build, Diederichs advises:

Give yourself enough time. If you’re in a rush, it will be harder to find the best deals on individual items.

Do as much of the build yourself as you can.

Just like homes and cars, RVs are pricey to maintain. Mobile Home Parts Store surveyed several RV experts and found they spent an average $1,410 a year on RV upkeep, or nearly $118 a month. Of course, that includes routine tasks such as replacing tires, getting oil changes, and keeping brakes in top shape, but there are other RV-specific things to worry about as well. Think broken generators, awnings, windows, and slide motors.

No Matter Your Choice, Expect Surprises

It's Time for the 'Sonic the Hedgehog' Franchise to Move Off-Planet

Why limit yourself to just Earth?

The Big Picture

 • Sonic the Hedgehog characters have the means to travel to alternate worlds with their rings.
 • The Sonic film franchise is hindered by staying on Earth, meaning it lacks narrative diversity.
 • Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will stay Earthbound, missing the potential to explore the vast universe.

The Sonic the Hedgehog movies have been fun and well-received by the franchise's passionate fanbase. However, the multimedia franchise, which recently transitioned to streaming television with the Knuckles miniseries, appears noticeably hampered by a growing obstacle. The central events of Sonic the Hedgehog , Sonic the Hedgehog 2 , and Knuckles remain anchored on planet Earth, even though Earth is not the home planet of Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails. The experience is dulled because the writers refuse to explore more vibrant worlds . The films tease glimpses of other planets, such as Sonic and Knuckles' unnamed homeworld, and the Mushroom Planet, where Dr. Robotnik ( Jim Carrey ) was stranded for a while. Although it doesn't look like the Sonic film franchise will leave Earth later this year with Sonic the Hedgehog 3 , it's time for the franchise to escape the safe confines of Earth and explore the vast universe at its disposal.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3

The characters in 'sonic the hedgehog' have the means to easily travel to alternate worlds.

One striking element of Sonic the Hedgehog is Sonic's connection to Green Hills and how he views the town as his new home. Sonic was offended when he realized that Tom Wachowski ( James Marsden ) wanted to relocate to San Francisco, leaving his hometown in the middle of nowhere in Montana. While Sonic grew fond of the small town, it seemed such a far cry from previous iterations of Sonic , who never seemed like the type of person who would want to settle down and put down roots, especially in his wild, rebellious teens. But this is a different version of Sonic, who was orphaned at a young age and raised by Longclaw . The two are later separated after an attack by the elders of Knuckles' Echidna tribe , leaving Sonic alone on Earth. However, with his rings, Sonic could travel anywhere on Earth or even go to other worlds .

The rings are still out there in the Sonic the Hedgehog movie universe. The rogue G.U.N. agents, Willoughby ( Ellie Taylor ) and Mason ( Scott Mescudi ) have access to Sonic's recovered rings in the Knuckles miniseries. They are used as ammo in a fancy portal gun. Tails also uses rings to travel to other worlds and Earth in Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2: The Official Movie Pre-Quill comic tie-in. Since the ability for quick and easy travel to other worlds across the universe already exists within the franchise, it should not be difficult from a narrative standpoint.

The 'Sonic the Hedgehog' Franchise Is Held Back by Staying Earthbound

In all fairness, the Knuckles miniseries was likely extremely limited from a budgetary standpoint. That means the series could not do much exploration beyond giving Knuckles and Wade Whipple ( Adam Pally ) a road trip across rural America, with the final act taking place in Reno, Nevada. That said, with the two theatrical features and Knuckles mainly taking place on Earth, it would be nice if later entries shook things up with a new setting. The Sonic the Hedgehog video games are defined by striking, exotic, and unique locations .

The movies do feature scenes and settings that pay homage to the video games, but it feels like a copout that they all primarily have to stay on planet Earth when other alien worlds exist . Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails primarily have to interact with each other or other human characters. And unfortunately, the human characters are the franchise’s weak link. Therefore, an easy solution is to expand the scope of the film franchise by taking the main characters to other worlds and planets .

If future Sonic the Hedgehog movies take their adventures off-world, the main characters could encounter new, colorful characters. Tom and Maddie ( Tika Sumpter ) can join Sonic and his friends to maintain the human element for narrative purposes. It would be nice to have the shoe on the other foot, seeing the humans as the proverbial fish out of water, contrasting the previous two movies and Knuckles , which largely showcase the aliens learning more about human and Earth culture . Future films could feature Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails returning to their respective home worlds.

Imagine if films could visit Little Planet, which would be a great way to introduce characters such as Amy Rose and Metal Sonic, who first appear in the Sonic CD video game. The fanbase avidly anticipates Amy Rose's arrival, and a new female character would provide a refreshing addition to the cast. If the main characters embark on new adventures, rather than passively waiting for others to arrive, the experience will be more exciting. This would stimulate more character development for the main cast, and it would provide the perfect opportunity to introduce other anthropomorphic alien characters. The potential for new characters is vast, with fans anxiously awaiting the big-screen debuts of Amy, Rouge the Bat, the Chaotix, and Big the Cat . There's no reason to stop at Shadow the Hedgehog in Sonic 3 . Arguably, Shadow might only be the tip of the iceberg for introducing new characters to the film series.

Sonic Leaving Earth Offers Poignant Thematic Material

The Sonic the Hedgehog movies depict Sonic creating a found family with the Wachowskis, Tails, and Knuckles. Tom and Maddie now view the trio as their "kids," and Sonic views the Wachowskis as his adopted parents. Considering Sonic begins the franchise as a young orphan separated from his owl guardian, it makes sense thematically that he would yearn for a home. Therefore, Sonic should eventually answer the call to leave Green Hills, Montana for a new adventure.

Much like the films present the metaphor for the found family, future adventures that take Sonic off-world could provide a metaphor about children growing up and leaving the nest, going off on their own. The material suggests that Sonic has a greater destiny, and he will likely travel to other worlds to help other people and face other villains and threats. If Sonic does part ways with his adopted family, that would provide future film installments with some bittersweet, poignant material , as well as an opportunity for tremendous character development for Sonic, who accepts his calling as a hero to liberate or protect his animal brethren across the universe.

'Sonic the Hedgehog 3' Is Likely Staying on Earth

Although the Sonic the Hedgehog film series should consider moving things off-world sooner rather than later, it doesn’t seem like that's happening anytime soon. It looks like the next big-screen installment of the franchise, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 , is keeping things Earthbound. The mid-credits scene for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 indicates that coordinates were discovered on an old government black site dating back over 50 years, teasing the appearance of Shadow the Hedgehog . However, the stinger scene didn't indicate anything about the black site being off-planet or off-world.

An early teaser trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was recently shown at CinemaCon in Las Vegas earlier in April . Nothing from the footage indicated that Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, Shadow, and Dr. Robotnik would be taking their fight away from planet Earth. For now, it appears Sonic and his friends are stuck on Earth and Green Hills . It remains to be seen if future sequels or other spinoffs will consider shifting the characters away from planet Earth. Keeping events perpetually on Earth seems rather mundane for a franchise such as Sonic the Hedgehog , especially since the film series has already revealed the existence of other planets. It's time the franchise explores its universe beyond the confines of Earth and Green Hills.

The recent Knuckles spinoff is streaming now on Paramount+, along with Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 . Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will be sprinting into theaters on December 20.
