BMW Championship: Viktor Hovland stuns Scottie Scheffler, Matt Fitzpatrick to snatch epic win

Viktor Hovland mixed 10 birdies with a lone bogey in a stunning final-round 61, setting the course record and earning a two-shot win; Scottie Scheffler leads FedExCup standings after finishing tied-second with Matt Fitzpatrick

Hovland

Viktor Hovland produced a sensational back-nine birdie barrage to stun world No 1 Scottie Scheffler and claim a dramatic victory at the BMW Championship.

Hovland overturned a three-stroke deficit during a gripping final round at Olympia Fields Country Club, where he fired seven birdies in a back-nine 28 to set the course record with an incredible nine-under 61.

The Norwegian ended the week on 17 under to register a second PGA Tour title of the season and fifth overall, with the latest success also seeing him close the gap on Scheffler at the top of the FedExCup standings heading into the Tour Championship.

Scheffler held at least a share of the lead for the majority of the day but saw his hopes ended with a penultimate-hole bogey, with the American finishing tied-second on 15 under with Matt Fitzpatrick and Rory McIlroy a further three strokes back in fourth.

Scheffler missed a six-foot chance at the par-five first but edged ahead when he converted from 10 feet at the next, with the world No 1 almost holing his approach into the third to set up a tap-in birdie.

Fitzpatrick poured in from 20 feet to match his playing partner's birdie and added another from close range at the next to pull level, with both then firing tee shots to inside six feet and picking up shots at the par-three sixth to move to 14 under.

Hovland - playing two groups ahead - had birdied three of his opening five holes to briefly get within one of the lead but then bogeyed the seventh, resulting in him turning in 33, while playing partner McIlroy was a further stroke back after finishing his front nine with a bogey.

Scheffler burned another birdie opportunity at the seventh and watched Fitzpatrick produce a remarkable up and down from the sand to save par at the eighth, only for the Englishman to bogey the ninth and fall one behind at the turn.

Fitzpatrick converted from 12 feet to join Scheffler in birdieing the 10th and temporarily moved back tied for the lead when the American bogeyed the par-four next, while Hovland charged into contention by starting his back nine with three consecutive birdies.

Hovland responded to a missed birdie chance at the 13th by making a tap-in birdie at the next to temporarily make it a three-way tie, only for Scheffler to roll in from 15 feet and 25 feet over his next two holes to card back-to-back birdies and go two clear.

Fitzpatrick recovered from bogeying the 14th by birdieing his next two holes to get back within one, as Hovland took advantage of the par-five 15th and added to his birdie tally at the par-four 17th to pull back alongside Scheffler on 16 under.

Scheffler had to settle for a par at the 15th and squandered a look from six feet after a brilliant tee shot at the 16th, which saw him fall behind for the first time when Hovland capped off an incredible back nine by slotting in an eight-foot birdie at the last to set the clubhouse target.

Hovland's lead doubled when Scheffler inexplicably carded a three-putt bogey at the 17th, with victory secure when neither Scheffler or Fitzpatrick could hole their second shots into the last and both settled for closing pars.

McIlroy birdied three of his last five holes to post a four-under 66 and take fourth, with Open champion Brian Harman and halfway leader Max Homa a further shot back in tied-fifth.

Hovland: My best round ever!

Asked where that round ranked in his career, Hovland told Sky Sports : "It has to be number one. I remember playing a pretty special round of golf my first year on Tour, I shot seven under at Torrey Pines when it was hailing and windy and raining and that's probably the best I've ever struck it throughout a round.

"But to shoot 61 and shoot 28 on the back nine at this golf course and under the circumstances, I have nothing that beats that."

Hovland, who started the day three off the lead, added: "I was thinking if I post a score like I did yesterday (65) I could at least have a chance, but it's hard when you have so many guys in front of you that are really good and playing awesome. Catching heat on the back nine was what I had to do."

What's next?

The PGA Tour season reaches its climax on Thursday at the Tour Championship, where only the top 30 in the FedExCup standings get to feature and players are given a strokes-based advantage based on their position.

Scheffler will start with a two-shot lead over Hovland and McIlroy will begin on seven under in third spot, while Jon Rahm begins in fourth ahead of Lucas Glover.

Excitement builds as BMW Championship prepares for return to Colorado in 2024

CASTLE ROCK, Colo. — The 2024 BMW Championship at Castle Pines Golf Club is nearly a year away, but anticipation among Denver-area golf fans is already palpable. Tournament organizers at the Western Golf Association have seen unprecedented levels of early interest with volunteer and ticket opportunities expected to be available soon.

The BMW Championship – the penultimate event in the PGA TOUR’s FedExCup Playoffs – is set to be held Aug. 20-25, 2024. The event will mark the PGA TOUR’s return to Colorado, one decade after the 2014 BMW Championship at Cherry Hills Country Club. It’s been nearly 20 years since the PGA TOUR last stopped at Castle Pines Golf Club, with the highly popular The INTERNATIONAL ending in 2006.

“We’ve been overwhelmed by the excitement and enthusiasm we’ve seen from fans and local businesses around Denver,” said Vince Pellegrino, WGA Senior Vice President of Tournaments. “This is an area that knows golf, and it’s clear that Colorado is hungry for the PGA TOUR to return. If the interest we’ve received so far is any indicator, we’re on track to have an impressive tournament and make an outstanding contribution to our sole charitable beneficiary, the Evans Scholars Foundation.”

The WGA expects to fill the 2,000 needed volunteer positions quickly, and demand for tickets is also expected to be robust. Fans can ensure they are the first to know when opportunities to volunteer or purchase tickets become available by filling out the Priority Interest Form .

Patrons who sign up for ticket updates will be eligible to purchase 2024 tickets through an exclusive pre-sale event before they are available to the public.

All proceeds from the BMW Championship benefit the Evans Scholars Foundation, which awards full tuition and housing college scholarships to deserving youth caddies. The event has raised more than $44 million for caddie scholarships since 2007, helping send more than 3,300 young men and women to college.

The BMW Championship field will include the top 50 players in the FedExCup standings as they compete for the J.K. Wadley Trophy and a spot in the season-ending TOUR Championship. Past champions include Viktor Hovland, Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas, Jason Day, Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose and Tiger Woods.

2023 BMW PGA Championship: European Ryder Cup team set for final tune-up at preeminent DP World Tour event

The full european squad gets a big stage this week to impress before taking on the u.s. side in rome.

TOUR Championship - Round One

The BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth is both the preeminent event in the world this week while also serving as a nice warmup for the European Ryder Cup team. All 12 member of the European squad, fresh off a scouting trip to Marco Simone Golf Club in Rome on Monday, will tee it up at Wentworth on Thursday with all but Robert MacIntyre at shorter than 50-1 odds, according to SportsLine consensus, to win the event.

Obviously, the tournament is headlined by Viktor Hovland, Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm, by far the three best players in the field and winners of 13 events worldwide over the last 12 months; however, the European team includes the top seven favorites to win the tournament this week.

  • Viktor Hovland: 13/2
  • Rory McIlroy: 7-1
  • Jon Rahm: 8-1
  • Tommy Fleetwood: 12-1
  • Matt Fitzpatrick: 16-1
  • Tyrrell Hatton: 18-1
  • Shane Lowry: 20-1

"As I said to somebody earlier, it's an amazing month to have ahead of you," Lowry said last week at the Irish Open. "Obviously, this week is our fifth major and ... I do treat it like that, and then I'm defending at Wentworth, which is one of my favorite events."

Last year, Lowry held off Rahm and McIlroy by one shot to win at 17 under, which, as far as ending to tournaments go, is up there. It also marked the second-to-last time Lowry finished in the top 10 in an event until his T3 last week in Ireland. He is finding form, it seems, at the best possible time for his teammates and the worst possible time for the U.S. side.

"Then buildup for the Ryder Cup the week after that," said Lowry. "Yeah, it's kind of dream stuff and something that I'm looking forward to the challenge the next few weeks, and very excited for what it could bring."

There are other stories to follow, as well. Can Hatton find something after a bad missed cut in Ireland and a largely tepid run since this summer? Will Fleetwood capitalize on his great play with the biggest win of his career? Do three straight top 10s for Fitzpatrick lead to a victory?

How will Ryder Cup rookies Ludvig Aberg and Nicolai Hojgaard fare in their first starts since getting the nod from captain Luke Donald? Aberg is grouped with McIlroy and Hovland in Round 1, while Hojgaard gets Padraig Harrington and Victor Perez. They'll both have a lot of eyes on them given the roles they'll play in Rome here in a few weeks.

Further down the list, Sepp Straka and MacIntyre will be under some scrutiny this week, too. Straka was a captain's pick, and his hot-and-cold run of golf is evidenced by the stretch seen below.

screenshot-2023-09-12-at-09-57-24.png

MacIntyre finished T50 at this event last year and is probably the player on the European side with the least firepower. That's not to say he won't be great in Rome, only that he is the least feared of the 12 from an American standpoint (which means he'll probably win this week).

But the tournament -- and most tournaments these days, possibly even including the Ryder Cup -- rotates around those top three. That McIlroy has won the least of the bunch over the last 12 months should be telling given that he has been the second-best statistical player in the world during that span.

All three finished in the top five here last year. All three will be called upon over and over again for Europe at the Ryder Cup. All three have played arguably the best golf of their careers in 2022. It's actually surprising that there is not more distance between Rahm at 8-1 and the fourth-shortest player in the field (Fleetwood at 12-1).

While all three will be among the heaviest hitters at Marco Simone when the festivities get underway in just over two weeks, it's hard to imagine a better scenario for the Ryder Cup overall -- other than maybe Justin Thomas winning the Fortinet Championship this week -- than one of them winning once again going into Rome.

Whether that happens remains to be seen, but this is a tremendous opportunity for not just those three but all 12 European Ryder Cup golfers to get one last rip at a great golf course with a tremendous tradition before the 44th edition of the best team event in golf.

BMW Championship, PGA Tour, FedEx Cup

The PGA Tour is in Chicago at Olympia Fields for the BMW Championship. This week is the second of three FedEx Cup playoff events as the top 50 players look to make it to Atlanta for the Tour Championship.

Here’s everything you need to know for the BMW Championship: a preview, full TV schedule, streaming schedule and complete first and second-round tee times.

BMW Championship Information

Where: Olympia Fields North Course (Par-70, 7,366 yards)

When: Aug. 17-20th

Purse: $20 million ($3.6 million to first)

Defending Champ: Patrick Cantlay

BMW Championship Preview

Another $20 million is on the line this week in Chicago. The Top 50 in FedEx Cup points are here to take on Olympia Fields and secure their spot in Atlanta.

This week will be brutal. Olympia Fields is a doozy. From multiple 600-plus yard par-5s to a 510-yard par-4, golfers will have to keep their game sharp.

With so many big names in Chicago for the BMW Championship, anyone can win it. They’re all eying a spot inside the Top 30, so who will come out on top?

Lucas Glover put on a show last week in Memphis, winning back-to-back events. Can he make it a three-peat?

Patrick Cantlay won this event each of the last two years. The eight-time PGA Tour winner outlasted Bryson DeChambeau in a six-hole playoff last season.

Cantlay is in form again. He narrowly lost to Glover in a playoff last week. Can he defend his title and win his fourth FedEx Cup event?

Rory McIlroy played well in Memphis, so he is another to watch this week. Since he won the Scottish Open and got that feeling off his back, the Northern Irishman could be eying another FedEx Cup title.

Of course, there is Scottie Scheffler always lurking. Jordan Spieth played well in Memphis. He is another to watch. There are so many names that could hoist the trophy on Sunday.

How to Watch the BMW Championship

The Golf Channel and CBS will share television coverage this week for the second playoff event. Golf Channel will focus on the first two rounds and the morning coverage on the weekend. CBS will take the afternoon coverage on Saturday and Sunday.

Here is the full schedule:

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — To anyone watching from the outside, Viktor Hovland’s swing one year ago was a thing of beauty, producing crisp, accurate shots that led to an opening-round 65 at the Masters and kept him in contention until the back nine on Sunday.

Helped him win the BMW Championship and Tour Championship in consecutive weeks, too.

But to Hovland, an almost obsessive tinkerer, something wasn’t quite right. And the six-time winner on the PGA Tour began to wonder, in his words, whether he had reached “the pinnacle of what my golf swing was able to do.”

So, he decided to find out.

In a surprising move for a player at the top of the game, Hovland parted with his swing coach, Joe Mayo. He began seeking advice from others, including former professional Grant Waite, and this week — as he returned to Augusta National still in search of his first major championship — Hovland was spotted working with instructor Dana Dahlquist.

“I’m still kind of looking for some opinions out there, but I feel like I’m on a good track now,” said Hovland, who has shown glimpses of it this season. The 26-year-old from Norway shot three rounds in the 60s and finished tied for 22nd at Kapalua in January and shot four rounds under par to finish in the top 20 a month later at Riviera.

“It’s like you’re trying to work on something, but it doesn’t necessarily feel exactly right, and then that’s when you kind of have to go back to the drawing board to keep figuring out until things start to click,” he said. “I feel like I’m in that situation now. Now I just have to keep practicing and get the reps in and we’ll see how long that takes.”

TIGHT SQUEEZE

Inside the clubhouse at Augusta National, after climbing a steep set of green-carpeted stairs, lies the Crow’s Nest, the modest apartment-like accommodations that have been used by amateurs playing in the Masters for decades.

Along with a simple common room and small bathroom are five single beds, three in their own cubicles and two lining the walls of another. Future champions ranging from Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson to Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods have stayed in the Crow’s Nest, and stories are told of precocious amateurs secretly padding around the clubhouse long after dark.

When the Crow’s Nest is full, it can be a tight squeeze. When one of those amateurs happens to be 6-foot-8?

“There’s very few places in America that have a bed big enough for me,” said Christo Lamprecht, the South African believed to be the tallest player ever to tee off at the Masters, “but I’ve gotten used to that.”

Lamprecht earned an invitation to the Masters, and the Crow’s Nest, with his victory at the British Amateur. He planned to spend just one night there before moving into roomier lodgings, but Lamprecht wasn’t going to miss out on the tradition.

“It’s probably the best uncomfortable sleep I’ll ever have in my life,” he said.

COUPLES KEEPS COMING BACK

Fred Couples became the oldest player to make the cut at the Masters a year ago, playing the weekend at the age of 63 years, 187 days. It was a special week for the 1992 champion, who has always held Augusta National close to his heart.

That affinity is why Couples, who has a long history of back trouble, is going to such great lengths to play this year.

When he fell at a PGA Tour Champions event a few years ago, it produced pain in a new area that hasn’t gone away. He had several cortisone shots last week to help relieve the inflammation, brought along physiotherapist Chad Beauchamp from California to help him out and has an MRI scheduled for next week to see what else can be done.

“The last thing I want to do is come out and embarrass myself by a bad score,” Couples said. “I know I can hit the ball. What is that? I don’t know if that’s a 73 or a 75, but I’m not shooting 80. There’s no way. I’m just not that kind of person. I wouldn’t do that. Can I shoot 80? Of course I can. But I’m not planning on it.”

Moscow’s nightlife scene is thriving, and arguably one of the best the world has to offer – top-notch Russian women, coupled with a never-ending list of venues, Moscow has a little bit of something for everyone’s taste. Moscow nightlife is not for the faint of heart – and if you’re coming, you better be ready to go Friday and Saturday night into the early morning.

This comprehensive guide to Moscow nightlife will run you through the nuts and bolts of all you need to know about Moscow’s nightclubs and give you a solid blueprint to operate with during your time in Moscow.

What you need to know before hitting Moscow nightclubs

Prices in moscow nightlife.

Before you head out and start gaming all the sexy Moscow girls , we have to talk money first. Bring plenty because in Moscow you can never bring a big enough bankroll. Remember, you’re the man so making a fuzz of not paying a drink here or there will not go down well.

Luckily most Moscow clubs don’t do cover fees. Some electro clubs will charge 15-20$, depending on their lineup. There’s the odd club with a minimum spend of 20-30$, which you’ll drop on drinks easily. By and large, you can scope out the venues for free, which is a big plus.

Bottle service is a great deal in Moscow. At top-tier clubs, it starts at 1,000$. That’ll go a long way with premium vodka at 250$, especially if you have three or four guys chipping in. Not to mention that it’s a massive status boost for getting girls, especially at high-end clubs.

Without bottle service, you should estimate a budget of 100-150$ per night. That is if you drink a lot and hit the top clubs with the hottest girls. Scale down for less alcohol and more basic places.

Dress code & Face control

Door policy in Moscow is called “face control” and it’s always the guy behind the two gorillas that gives the green light if you’re in or out.

In Moscow nightlife there’s only one rule when it comes to dress codes:

You can never be underdressed.

People dress A LOT sharper than, say, in the US and that goes for both sexes. For high-end clubs, you definitely want to roll with a sharp blazer and a pocket square, not to mention dress shoes in tip-top condition. Those are the minimum requirements to level the playing field vis a vis with other sharply dressed guys that have a lot more money than you do. Unless you plan to hit explicit electro or underground clubs, which have their own dress code, you are always on the money with that style.

Getting in a Moscow club isn’t as hard as it seems: dress sharp, speak English at the door and look like you’re in the mood to spend all that money that you supposedly have (even if you don’t). That will open almost any door in Moscow’s nightlife for you.

Types of Moscow Nightclubs

In Moscow there are four types of clubs with the accompanying female clientele:

High-end clubs:

These are often crossovers between restaurants and clubs with lots of tables and very little space to dance. Heavy accent on bottle service most of the time but you can work the room from the bar as well. The hottest and most expensive girls in Moscow go there. Bring deep pockets and lots of self-confidence and you have a shot at swooping them.

Regular Mid-level clubs:

They probably resemble more what you’re used to in a nightclub: big dancefloors, stages and more space to roam around. Bottle service will make you stand out more but you can also do well without. You can find all types of girls but most will be in the 6-8 range. Your targets should always be the girls drinking and ideally in pairs. It’s impossible not to swoop if your game is at least half-decent.

Basic clubs/dive bars:

Usually spots with very cheap booze and lax face control. If you’re dressed too sharp and speak no Russian, you might attract the wrong type of attention so be vigilant. If you know the local scene you can swoop 6s and 7s almost at will. Usually students and girls from the suburbs.

Electro/underground clubs:

Home of the hipsters and creatives. Parties there don’t mean meeting girls and getting drunk but doing pills and spacing out to the music. Lots of attractive hipster girls if that is your niche. That is its own scene with a different dress code as well.

What time to go out in Moscow

Moscow nightlife starts late. Don’t show up at bars and preparty spots before 11pm because you’ll feel fairly alone. Peak time is between 1am and 3am. That is also the time of Moscow nightlife’s biggest nuisance: concerts by artists you won’t know and who only distract your girls from drinking and being gamed. From 4am to 6am the regular clubs are emptying out but plenty of people, women included, still hit up one of the many afterparty clubs. Those last till well past 10am.

As far as days go: Fridays and Saturdays are peak days. Thursday is an OK day, all other days are fairly weak and you have to know the right venues.

The Ultimate Moscow Nightclub List

Short disclaimer: I didn’t add basic and electro clubs since you’re coming for the girls, not for the music. This list will give you more options than you’ll be able to handle on a weekend.

Preparty – start here at 11PM

Classic restaurant club with lots of tables and a smallish bar and dancefloor. Come here between 11pm and 12am when the concert is over and they start with the actual party. Even early in the night tons of sexy women here, who lean slightly older (25 and up).

The second floor of the Ugolek restaurant is an extra bar with dim lights and house music tunes. Very small and cozy with a slight hipster vibe but generally draws plenty of attractive women too. A bit slower vibe than Valenok.

Very cool, spread-out venue that has a modern library theme. Not always full with people but when it is, it’s brimming with top-tier women. Slow vibe here and better for grabbing contacts and moving on.

High-end: err on the side of being too early rather than too late because of face control.

Secret Room

Probably the top venue at the moment in Moscow . Very small but wildly popular club, which is crammed with tables but always packed. They do parties on Thursdays and Sundays as well. This club has a hip-hop/high-end theme, meaning most girls are gold diggers, IG models, and tattooed hip hop chicks. Very unfavorable logistics because there is almost no room no move inside the club but the party vibe makes it worth it. Strict face control.

Close to Secret Room and with a much more favorable and spacious three-part layout. This place attracts very hot women but also lots of ball busters and fakes that will leave you blue-balled. Come early because after 4am it starts getting empty fast. Electronic music.

A slightly kitsch restaurant club that plays Russian pop and is full of gold diggers, semi-pros, and men from the Caucasus republics. Thursday is the strongest night but that dynamic might be changing since Secret Room opened its doors. You can swoop here but it will be a struggle.

bmw golf tour

Mid-level: your sweet spot in terms of ease and attractiveness of girls for an average budget.

Started going downwards in 2018 due to lax face control and this might get even worse with the World Cup. In terms of layout one of the best Moscow nightclubs because it’s very big and bottle service gives you a good edge here. Still attracts lots of cute girls with loose morals but plenty of provincial girls (and guys) as well. Swooping is fairly easy here.

I haven’t been at this place in over a year, ever since it started becoming ground zero for drunken teenagers. Similar clientele to Icon but less chic, younger and drunker. Decent mainstream music that attracts plenty of tourists. Girls are easy here as well.

Sort of a Coyote Ugly (the real one in Moscow sucks) with party music and lots of drunken people licking each others’ faces. Very entertaining with the right amount of alcohol and very easy to pull in there. Don’t think about staying sober in here, you’ll hate it.

Artel Bessonitsa/Shakti Terrace

Electronic music club that is sort of a high-end place with an underground clientele and located between the teenager clubs Icon and Gipsy. Very good music but a bit all over the place with their vibe and their branding. You can swoop almost any type of girl here from high-heeled beauty to coked-up hipsters, provided they’re not too sober.

bmw golf tour

Afterparty: if by 5AM  you haven’t pulled, it’s time to move here.

Best afterparty spot in terms of trying to get girls. Pretty much no one is sober in there and savage gorilla game goes a long way. Lots of very hot and slutty-looking girls but it can be hard to tell apart who is looking for dick and who is just on drugs but not interested. If by 9-10am you haven’t pulled, it is probably better to surrender.

The hipster alternative for afterparties, where even more drugs are in play. Plenty of attractive girls there but you have to know how to work this type of club. A nicer atmosphere and better music but if you’re desperate to pull, you’ll probably go to Miks.

Weekday jokers: if you’re on the hunt for some sexy Russian girls during the week, here are two tips to make your life easier.

Chesterfield

Ladies night on Wednesdays means this place gets pretty packed with smashed teenagers and 6s and 7s. Don’t pull out the three-piece suit in here because it’s a “simpler” crowd. Definitely your best shot on Wednesdays.

If you haven’t pulled at Chesterfield, you can throw a Hail Mary and hit up Garage’s Black Music Wednesdays. Fills up really late but there are some cute Black Music groupies in here. Very small club. Thursday through Saturday they do afterparties and you have an excellent shot and swooping girls that are probably high.

Shishas Sferum

This is pretty much your only shot on Mondays and Tuesdays because they offer free or almost free drinks for women. A fairly low-class club where you should watch your drinks. As always the case in Moscow, there will be cute girls here on any day of the week but it’s nowhere near as good as on the weekend.

bmw golf tour

In a nutshell, that is all you need to know about where to meet Moscow girls in nightlife. There are tons of options, and it all depends on what best fits your style, based on the type of girls that you’re looking for.
