What types of fountain pens are there.

Every handwriting is different, which is why Lamy offers the right fountain pen for every writing style and preference. Children can get started with our learn-to-write fountain pens: They are equipped with special nibs for novice writers and ergonomically shaped grips that support clean writing and the correct pen posture for fatigue-free writing. Our all-round models for everyday use are characterised by their robust quality and timeless look. Design enthusiasts will find their favourite among our premium models and can add a uniquely smooth writing feel to the Lamy fountain pen of their choice with our platinum-finished 14-carat gold nibs. All our Lamy fountain pens can be additionally equipped with alternative nibs: In our shop you can get left-handed nibs, bevelled nibs for a slanted hand position, calligraphy nibs for beautiful writing and our elegant premium nibs made of gold or refined with PVD.

Which fountain pen is best for children and for learning to write?

The LAMY abc learn-to-write system, consisting of a learn-to-write pen and a learn-to-write fountain pen, was developed for the first writing attempts. The special feature of the ergonomic fountain pen in this series is the ergonomically shaped grip piece, which ensures a secure hold when writing with its soft, non-slip grip recesses. The LAMY abc fountain pen is equipped with an A nib that glides effortlessly over the paper thanks to its strongly rounded writing tip and supports a relaxed hand position.

The LAMY nexx is also available with a beginner's nib and is suitable for first writing attempts as well as for advanced writers: Its grip is slightly larger overall than the LAMY abc learn-to-write fountain pen, but reaches equally close to the nib and has equally soft grip recesses. The stainless-steel nib is available in four nib strengths and glides effortlessly over the paper. In this way, it enables you to write without tiring, even over a long period of time.

What are the different types of nibs?

Our Lamy nibs of the model LAMY Z50 are available in the strengths extra fine (EF), fine (F), wide (B) and extra wide (BB * ). Furthermore, the Oblique nibs for writers who prefer a bevelled nib tip are available in the Lamy range - they are also available in the strengths "left oblique medium" (OM ** ), "left oblique wide" (OB ** ) and "left oblique extra wide" (OBB * ).

Our bicolour gold nibs Z55 and Z56 are available in the strengths "medium" (M), "wide" (B), "extra fine" (EF), "fine" (F), "left oblique medium" (OM ** ) and "left oblique wide" (OB ** ). The black stainless steel nib Z 52 is available in the strengths "medium" (M), "broad" (B), "extra fine" (EF) and "fine" (F). Special calligraphy nibs, also called cursive or ribbon nibs, are available in line widths of 1.1 mm, 1.5 mm and 1.9 mm. *only available with LAMY 2000 ** only available as gold nibs

How do I find a fountain pen for calligraphy?

You can find the LAMY joy fountain pen in our online shop, and it is regularly offered as a special edition in different colours. It is available as standard in three different nib widths (1.1 mm, 1.5 mm and 1.9 mm), allowing you to give your writing an individual expression both in everyday life and on special occasions. Alternatively, many of our fountain pen models, including LAMY nexx, LAMY safari and LAMY AL-star, can be easily converted into a fountain pen with the Z50 nib series - these are available in 1.1 mm, 1.5 m and 1.9 mm line widths.

Which ink cartridge does my fountain pen need?

Our LAMY fountain pens (with the exception of the LAMY 2000) write with our special LAMY T10 large capacity cartridges . These are available in a variety of colours, including blue and black, as well as other colours for special occasions, individual preferences and creative writing.

Which fountain pen is best for left-handers?

All our LAMY writing instruments can be used by left-handers and right-handers alike. The grips fit ergonomically in the hand of all writers, so that ballpoint pens, rollerballs and other writing instruments can be used with the left or right hand without any problems. To make your favourite fountain pen suitable for left-handers, only the nib needs to be changed. This is easily possible with the LH spring: It has the same properties as our all-rounder, the M-spring - with a small but subtle difference: It is slightly bevelled and thus optimally suited for left-handers who often angle their hand when writing.

The nib of a fountain pen is the metal part that actually touches the paper. The width and firmness of the nib, combined with the way you hold a pen, as well as your choice of ink and paper, will determine how the writing style of your pen will look. The LAMY  safari is a workhorse pen, known throughout the fountain pen community for its ruggedness, reliability, and no-nonsense functionality. The triangular grip makes it great for those starting out who have no idea how to hold a fountain pen, but it's used and loved by fountain pen lovers of all levels of experience.

The  safari comes with an interchangeable silver steel nib, which can be easily swapped out for another size. This fountain pen comes with a blue LAMY ink cartridge so you can get started writing right away.

If you'd like to use bottled fountain pen ink, you can also purchase a LAMY Z28 converter. Note: To ensure quality performance, LAMY tests their pens as a final step in manufacturing. If you happen to see any residual blue ink, rest assured that this is normal.

It depends on the pen's filling mechanism, which you can find in the Technical Specs section above. 

Here's a quick definition of the most common filling mechanisms:

• Cartridge - A small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write! Check out our quick guide here .
• Converter - A detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter. Here's a video for how to fill a cartridge/converter pen using a LAMY pen as an example.
• Eyedropper - A pen that utilizes the entire barrel as a reservoir for ink. Ink is directly filled into the barrel, allowing for a high ink capacity. Here's a video on how to do it!
• Piston - A type of filling system that uses a retracting plunger inside a sealed tube to draw ink into a pen. They are typically either twist or push-operated. These pens cannot accept cartridges or a converter, and only fill from bottled ink.
• Vacuum - A push-style piston that uses pressure to fill the large pen body with ink. They seal the ink chamber when closed, making it ideal for flying without risk of leaking. Check out our video on how to use a vac filler here .

It depends on the filling mechanism, but it mostly comes down to flushing it out with water, and sometimes a little bit of Pen Flush if the ink is really stuck. 

It's a bit easier to show than to tell, so we've put together a few quick videos showing you the process:

How often do I need to clean my fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors. 

Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.

My pen won’t write! What do I do? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

First things first... make sure you have ink in the pen! Be sure that the ink cartridge or converter is seated properly in the pen, and that you aren't out of ink.

We always recommend you give your pen a good cleaning first, using our Goulet Pen Flush , or a drop of dish soap in some water. New pens often have some machining oil residue left in the feed, so a good cleaning often does the trick first.

If that still doesn't work, try priming the feed. This consists of either dipping your pen nib and feed in ink, or forcing ink from the converter down into the feed.

15 grams, 14 centimetres. One should not allow oneself to be deceived by this slight apparition: The LAMY safari is any thing but a lightweight. In fact, it is the bestselling writing instrument in the world in its category. What lies behind the fascination with the LAMY safari ?

There are few places on earth where it is not to be found. In lecture theatres and architects’ studios, in law firms and offices; in Mumbai and New York, in London and Berlin, from Beijing to Moscow. It is an all-rounder which can be used almost everywhere, for writing as well as designing and drawing. What makes this writing instrument so beloved?

Its unpretentious appearance plays a great part, art director Mike Meiré believes. “The LAMY safari is a chameleon. It is changeable and adapts to different environments, both in terms of function and design.”

The same can be said of its twin, the LAMY AL-star , which is made of aluminium, as well as the transparent LAMY vista .

This versatility is based on the principle of consistent reduction, which Lamy has adopted as a philosophy: The design is resolutely derived from the function and forgoes superfluous details. “We not only ask: What looks good?, but above all: What improves the product?”, explains Marco Achenbach, responsible for product management and development at Lamy.

Perfect for frequent writers: the LAMY safari with its ergonomic recessed grip

So it is that everything that makes the LAMY safari unmistakable is also critical for its functionality. The sturdy clip, with which the LAMY safari can be attached to a notebook or shirt pocket; the grip with its distinct recesses. “They ensure that one’s fingers do not cramp up”, says Achenbach. “That is why the LAMY safari is ideal for people who write a lot.”

The ink window, which allows the user to see how as is the shape of the body. This is not quite round, but rather flattened at the sides, so that it does not roll off the desk. The nib can easily be replaced and is available in different widths. This also makes the fountain pen particularly popular in Asia, as the fine nibs are suitable for intricate characters.

The clip is the hallmark of the LAMY safari .

The model LAMY joy was specially developed for calligraphy: fitted with the same grip as the LAMY safari , but with a long, conically tapered shaft and three calligraphy nibs, which can also be easily replaced. And the material? ABS, a plastic which is known for its resilience and impact resistance in the case of the LAMY safari , and aluminium in the case of the LAMY AL-star , which can also withstand a great deal and is particularly light besides.

Speaking of colour. It is to a large extent due to the wide selection of colours which makes the LAMY safari so popular – from red to blue and green through to pink. For many years the most popular colour design has been umbra, followed by white and black. Before getting my first Lamy Safari, I would like to learn how to take care of it. After looking at some posts about maintenance of Lamy Safari, I have some questions.

First, is a syringe necessary? If yes, how should I use it?

Second, if I disassembling a pen for too many time, would that hurt my pen?

Third, is there part of the pen that cannot be cleaned with water?

Fourth, what kind of material should I use to wipe my pen? Would tissues be bad for my pen?

I can answer the first question: since you can't change the Safari to an eyedropper because of the holes in the barrel, you don't need a syringe. You would need it if you'd like to refill cartridges with fresh ink, but that has got nothing to do with the Safari.

I don't usually bother, you can flush the pen with the converter. It does take a bit longer.

I don't generally take my pens apart to clean them unless they are obviously clogged.

An eyedropper pen is one where you fill the whole barrel with ink using an eyedropper , obviously you can only do this if the barrel is air/water tight.

Water is the main cleaning fluid. Sometimes a tiny bit of washing up liquid in the water can help.

For clogged pens - pen flush, diluted household ammonia 1:10 with water or diluted vinegar 1:10 (if iron gall ink has been used). But all of this is getting complex.

First unscrew the barrel and take out the ink cartridge, put aside for later.

You really don't need to take the nib section apart, but to clean it, all that is needed is to fill a plastic or glass cup with water, put the whole nib and finger grip section into the water and leave it for a few hours, or overnight if you can wait. (photo)

Then take the pen out of the water, give it a good shake to get most of the water off, be sure there is no water down where the cartridge plugs in. Stand the pen with the nib on a paper towel for about 30 minutes.

When it all seems to be be dry, plug the cartridge back in, thread the barrel back on and write.

My cleaning regime for cleaning for a lamy safari id as follows:

Old Safari Cart with the top cut off

Bulb Syringe

Normal Syringe.

I fit the old safari cart to the pen, and flush with the bulb syringe (once is usually enough)

Fill the normal syringe and stick it into the convert and flush it through (again once is enough)

attach the convert to the pen and flush through twice to make sure it is clean.

leave it on a paper towel to drain out the remaining water and that there is no ink in it.

Doesn't take longer than about 30 seconds.

My cleaning is the same for other c/c pens (although the old cart is normally not needed)
