![carnival cruise food menu Lifestyle](https://thepointsguy.global.ssl.fastly.net/us/originals/2024/03/carnival-bonsai-sushi.jpg?width=3840)
On a Carnival cruise, food is always one of the highlights. From Guy Fieri burgers to fancy steaks at Fahrenheit 555, you'll find endless options to satisfy your hunger in a highly enjoyable fashion. In fact, there's often more to eat and explore than you could possibly have time for in a single sailing.
If you're planning your next cruise and want to know which Carnival restaurants to expect on board, you've come to the right place. While certain dining venues remain a standard across all ships — like the much-loved Lido Deck buffet — the options keep expanding with every new ship launch. Plus, older ships are constantly being refurbished and updated with new restaurants. That's why we put together this comprehensive list of Carnival cruise restaurants and where you can find them.

Carnival restaurants available fleetwide
Coffee bar or javablue cafe.
A la carte pricing; snacks
Black coffee and tea are free at the buffet and in the main dining room, but you'll want to come here for specialty coffee drinks like espresso or cold brew. You can also purchase milkshakes and baked goods when you need an extra pick-me-up (or grab free Danish pastries and croissants in the morning).
Dining room
![carnival cruise food menu](https://thepointsguy.global.ssl.fastly.net/us/originals/2022/11/2carnivalwaitress.jpg?width=3840)
Included; breakfast and dinner
The main dining room serves a sit-down breakfast and the nightly three-course dinner that's included in your cruise fare. Even better, Carnival's chief culinary officer, Emeril Lagasse, is now behind many of the dining room's new menu items. On Carnival, the main dining room comes with less pretense than on many other cruise lines. In fact, it's not uncommon for your servers to break out in song and dance by the end of the night.
Don't miss other special dining experiences like the complimentary Seaday Brunch menu or the family-friendly Dr. Seuss-themed breakfast for an additional fee ($10 to $15 per adult; $8 to $10 per child), which includes meet-and-greets with characters.

Lido Marketplace
Included; breakfast, lunch and dinner
Carnival's buffet on the Lido Deck has all the staple stations to keep you fed from morning until night. Try the deli counter, barbecue spot, pasta bar or Asian noodle station. Don't miss the always-essential salad bar or pizza station. Finish up with soft serve ice cream, frozen yogurt or an enormous cake slice and other goodies from the dessert station.
Included; snacks
No cruise experience is complete without on-demand soft serve. Open on the Lido Deck until midnight, the Swirls station serves up frozen yogurt and soft serve ice cream in the classic flavors of vanilla, chocolate and strawberry, or you can enjoy your own combo swirl. The best part is it's self-serve, so no one can judge you for how often you come back for another cone.
The Chef's Table
Fixed price; dinner
This exclusive multicourse dining experience hosted by the ship's master executive chef takes place in untraditional spaces like the galley or library to give you a behind-the-scenes VIP feel. (Some newer ships even have a dedicated Chef's Table dining room with a window into the galley.) You'll be part of a group of only 14 to 16 guests, and the evening kicks off with cocktails, hors d'oeuvres and a tour of the galley. The dinner menu itself changes based on what's in season or local to the port, but it always includes wine pairings and, of course, dessert.

Pizza delivery
Fixed price; all-day dining
You can order pizza on the Carnival Hub app to wherever you are on the ship, any time of day, for a delivery fee of $5 per pie. Pro tip: Take a picture of yourself showing where you're located on board to help the pizza delivery staff find you.
Pizzeria del Capitano or Pizza Pirate
Included; lunch and dinner
The all-day pizza station is going to be your go-to option when you get back from a day at port and the lunch buffet is already closed or when you're hungry after a late night of partying. Carnival cruise food: Frequently asked questions
![carnival cruise food menu](https://thepointsguy.global.ssl.fastly.net/us/originals/2024/03/carnival-vista-seafood-shack.jpg?width=3840)
How do seating times work in the main dining room?
Before sailing, you must choose your preferred dining format for the main dining room — either set dining times with assigned seating or a flexible option called Your Time Dining with open seating. If you prefer a preset dining time and a guaranteed table with the same server every night, you can choose early dining at 5:30 p.m. or late dining at 7:45 p.m.
With Your Time Dining, you can go to the main dining room anytime between 5:15 p.m. and 9 p.m. to be seated on a first-come, first-served basis. Just alert the dining room that you're coming on the Carnival Hub app so your table will be ready sooner. You can request a specific waiter, but more likely, you'll sit at a different table with a new waiter each evening. You might have to wait for a table at peak dinner times, but Carnival says the average wait time is usually less than 20 minutes, depending on your party size.
Either way, there's no need to make a reservation for the main dining room.
Do you need reservations for specialty dining restaurants?
Reservations are highly recommended for specialty restaurants, as these locations can book up in advance. You can make reservations online up to 48 hours before your cruise by visiting the "Manage My Booking/Cruise Manager" section of Carnival.com, at which time you'll also pay the cover charge for the restaurant.
Once you get on board, look for staff set up at booths to help you make specialty dining reservations. You can also call or visit the restaurant yourself to make a reservation, but seating times might be limited. Walk-ins are allowed but will get seated based on availability. If you don't make a reservation, be prepared for a wait or the possibility of being turned away if the restaurant is booked.
Can you enjoy unlimited food on your Carnival cruise?
It depends on where you eat! There are no limits on most of the included food options, and you can pretty much find free food on your cruise from the crack of dawn to late into the night. You can always eat as much as you want at the buffet in Lido Marketplace and other included food stations across the ship during their operating hours. In the main dining room, however, guests are limited to two free entrees (which, let's be honest, is still plenty!) before having to pay for additional entrees.
Is there a fee for room service?
Room service isn't free on Carnival anymore, except during breakfast. Instead, menu items are available to order a la carte. Complimentary continental breakfast can be delivered to your room between the hours of 6 and 10 a.m. For more details, check out our complete cruise ship room service guide .
Are kids menus available?
Most dining venues offer kids menus with plenty of safe options for picky eaters (think: chicken nuggets, macaroni and cheese, and spaghetti and meatballs). If you're dining at one of the specialty restaurants with a cover charge, there's a reduced fee for kids under 11.
Does Carnival still offer a Lobster Night?
Lobster is available for dinner nightly in the main dining room for a surcharge, but on cruise sailings of six nights or longer, Carnival offers one night per sailing (typically one of the formal nights) where a lobster tail is included as a complimentary entree option on the three-course menu. But don't expect to scarf down all the lobster you can eat. In line with Carnival's two-entree limit in the main dining room, guests now have to pay for any additional lobster past the first two entrees.

(NEW) In June 2022, CCL introduced fleetwide "Menu Mate" - a food ingredient program designed for passengers with special diets. Menu Mate is installed on touchscreen tablets (available at all food venues fleetwide) using software developed by CertiStar Inc (2017-founded by Shandee Chernow company) and now eliminates the need for passengers to inform CCL of their food allergies prior to the voyage.
(NEW) In early-July 2019, CCL announced specialty dining changes to be implemented fleetwide. As a result, passengers now can make reservations at specialty (at fee) restaurants in advance. This means they can not only pick the restaurant/s but also specific dates and times.
Previously, customers had to wait for an email confirmation of the requested dining reservation. Now they immediately lock the reservation/s into place after paying in full at cruise booking time. Dining reservations can be canceled at any time (before and after boarding) without penalties. The only exception is Chef’s Table (VIP dining package) which charges a USD 25 pp cancellation fee for cancelations within 24 hours of the reservation. Specialty dining reservations on the ship can also be made.
(NEW) Also in 2019, CCL rolled out (fleetwide) a new brunch menu of traditional fast-food favorites. The new Brunch menu is available only on sea days and includes popular food items for Breakfast (frittata, parfaits, cereals, croissants, muffins, Danish pastries, toasts, bagels, omelets, eggs benedict) and for Lunch (salads, egg salad, burgers, fried chicken, pasta, seafood / lobster benedict, crab, shrimp, tuna, salmon).
Carnival cruise food menus
Each of the CCL's dining menus is a perfect example how the cheapest cruise prices should be inclusive of exotic gourmet dishes, a huge diversity of Italian-American classic recipes, plus some absolutely unique food recipes inspired by some of the world's best chefs - all so delicious and all so beautifully presented. Your "Carnival food" menu guarantees the "gourmet fun experience" you deserve if you're booked on any of "The Fun" ships.

Carnival Room Service menu (breakfast)
Note: CCL's breakfast room service menu is written on the "Rise and Shine" room service door hanger. On it, you should indicate the quantities required, along with your cabin number, number of persons, your name and the time you wish your stateroom service breakfast to be served. Hang it outside your door before 5 AM.
![carnival cruise food menu Carnival room service menu list](https://www.cruisemapper.com/images/scold/2013/12/Carnival-room-service-menu.jpg)
In early January 2018, Carnival announced that starts charging its passengers for late-night room service, The company explained that this would cut down on board food waste.
All passengers ordering items from the room service menu between 10 pm - 6 am are now charged. Unlike most of CCL's competitors, the company still offers free of charge room service options between 6 am - 10 pm. The new daytime menu has both complimentary/free of charge items (salads, sandwiches, desserts, juices, teas, coffees) and extra charge items (pizza, chicken wings and tenders, fries, seafood, beverages/sodas, beers).
Starting in January 2019, CCL rolled out fleetwide a new room service menu on which all items are at extra charge. The only exception is the basic Continental Breakfast. The new menu items cost between US$2 and US$5 per item. Charges apply to lunch, dinner and late-night menu items. Salads cost between US$2 and US$3 (lemon chicken can be added at an additional US$2). Items like chicken wings, Philly cheesesteaks, and pan pizzas cost between US$4 and US$6. Sandwiches like PB&J, tuna salad, grilled cheese cost US$4. Sweet potato fries cost US$3. Side of fries costs US$2.
However, a few days later, Carnival Brand Ambassador John Heald announced that the cruise line was “in the process of making some adjustments to that plan" to balance the interest of their guests with the efforts to reduce food waste costs. He added that for the time being then, there would be no changes until they finalize their plan.
New Room Service Menu (2019 onwards)
Introduced on Carnival Horizon in June 2018 and implemented fleetwide in 2019, "Pizza Anywhere" is an in-cabin pizza delivery option via the Carnival Hub App. In May 2019, to the Hub App was added the drink delivery function as passengers now can order bottled water, sodas (Coke, Diet Coke, Coke Zero, Diet Sprite), as well as domestic and imported beers (Blue Moon, Peroni, Miller Lite). These beverages are charged to passenger accounts separately and are not covered by any drink package. Pizza Anywhere on the ship costs US$5 per delivery. Pizza options include Quattro Formaggi, Funghi, Margherita, Pepperoni, Prosciutto.
Old Room Service Menu (until 2018)
Note: The following information regards the cruise company's old room service menu.
As of December 21, 2015 - eight months after the company launched for-fee room service on three of its ships, the company is rolling the menu fleetwide. The menu charges from $1.50 to $6 for items including quesadillas, shrimp, chicken wings and tenders, pizza, cheesesteaks and sides of fries. In April 2015 Carnival introduced the new menu on the boats Conquest , Imagination and Pride , saying it would use cruise passenger feedback to determine if the up-charge offerings would be rolled out fleet-wide.
24-hour ROOM SERVICE menu
Note: Available by dialing 800 from your cabin, guests must be 21+ to order alcoholic drinks.
In January 2018 CCL made a few changes to the company's complimentary stateroom service program offered fleetwide. The biggest change is that the company no longer offers complimentary room service between 10 pm and 6 am. The company now offers an expanded offering of fee-based items ranging from US$2-$6. New options include Chicken Caesar Salad, Greek Salad, Grilled Cheese, Bacon and Tomato Sandwich, Roast Turkey Wrap and Portabella and Veggie Bun. There is also a brand new selection of desserts, such as Banana Split, Dark Chocolate Walnut Brownies, and Doughnut Sandwich.
In addition, CCLl no longer offers room service on the debarkation morning. Breakfast is still offered at Lido Deck Restaurant and at cruise ships that feature Ocean Plaza. The biggest reason for the change was due to a large amount of wasted food and the fee-based menu for late-night snacks should help alleviate the issue. CCL vessels continue to offer complimentary late-night snacks at the delis and pizzerias onboard.
Main Dining Room's BREAKFAST menu
Debuting on Carnival Dream, in June 2023 CCL rolled out fleetwide new Main Dining Room menus, curated by Emeril Lagasse (CCL's Chief Culinary Officer) in collaboration with the fleet's Master Chefs. The new MDR menus feature items like Hawaiian Shrimp Poke Bowl, Grilled Swordfish, Roast Duck Rice Paper Rolls, Pappardelle with Braised Lamb Ragu, Roasted Cornish Game Hen, as well as new salads and desserts.
MDR menu's "Emeri Selects” are Lagasse-selected items including Shrimp Stuffed Crab Cakes; Beef Carpaccio, Coffee Roasted Duck Breast; BBQ Salmon (grilled in foil).
Note: On Port Days available on all ships, on Sea Days - only on ships without the "Punchliner Brunch".
Breakfast Menus in the MDRs are just as varied with delicious options like avocado toast; Breakfast Bowl featuring spinach, kale, sesame seeds, faro wheat berries, feta cheese, sunny side up egg and raspberries; fresh-baked Broccoli and Cheddar Egg Frittata. There is also a Broken Egg Sandwich in panini-style with bacon, cheddar, fried eggs, greens, and hash browns; as well as a "Breakfast Board" with house-made yogurt, soft boiled egg, seasonal jam, pastrami, grilled sourdough bread, and baby lettuce salad. For guests on the go, new "breakfast express" is offered on port days with orange juice, hickory-smoked bacon/sausage, pastries and eggs, all prepared within 25 minutes. Traditional breakfast favorites like French toast, cereals, and pancakes are also offered.

SALADS menu is the same for both and includes:
- "Mixed Garden and Field Greens"
- "Caesar" (freshly grated Parmesan, herb croutons)
Captain's WELCOME DINNER menu
Captain's gala dinner menu, main dining room's vegan menu.
In September 2023, CCL introduced new vegan menus (offered in the MDRs/Main Dininng Rooms) slated to be available fleetwide by 2023's end.
Carnival's vegan menus offer plant-based food (appetizers, entrees, desserts) which are entirely made with vegan ingredients.
MDR's vegan menus were introduced gradually - in September (ships Freedom, Horizon, Valor, Radiance, Miracle, Panorama, Mardi Gras), October (Celebration, Sunrise, Glory, Conquest, Vista, Breeze, Sunshine, Elation), November (Paradise, Spirit) and December (Legend, Venezia, Jubilee).
Dinner menus - "American TABLE" and "American FEAST"
CCL made the debut of their new dining concepts named "American TABLE" and "American FEAST" in early December 2013 (starting with Glory on Dec 8). Carnival was testing their fans' respond to more contemporary meals, and also the locally-themed recipes in several call ports.
The new onboard dinner menus are rotated daily. Follow these links to see the new "American TABLE" wine list prices and the feature "American TABLE" drink menu prices of cocktails offered at dinner in the Main Dining Rooms.
![carnival cruise food menu New Carnival cruise dinner menu](https://www.cruisemapper.com/images/scold/2013/12/Carnival-cruise-dinner-menu.jpg)
The implementation schedule for the new cruise dinner menus included Glory (December 2013), Liberty (January 2014) and in February 2014 - the Imagination and Inspiration ships. The "Fun Ships" fans accept the new dining concepts well, so the new menus are implemented on all ships in the CCL fleet through 2015.
"American TABLE" menu

Carnival Cruise Line’s newest ship, Carnival Celebration, has just set sail from Miami, and we sailed on this ship’s first cruise from the United States . Now, we are back and have put together this Carnival Celebrations Restaurants Guide with menus so you can see what is available at the different restaurants onboard this latest Excel Class ship.
Carnival Celebration Restaurants Guide With Menus
Complimentary carnival celebration restaurants.
There are several dining options on the list of Carnival Celebration restaurants that are included in your cruise fare. These include the typical main dining room (Festivale and Carnivale) as well as the cruise ship buffet (Lido Marketplace).
![carnival cruise food menu Carnival Celebration Restaurants with Menus](https://eatsleepcruise.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/91CEB36B-638A-40C2-896A-012349E5C0F6-1024x768.jpeg.optimal.jpeg)
Carnival Cruise Line ships also offer several quick service options that are complimentary. From Mexican favorites at BlueIguana Cantina, to burgers at Guy’s Burger Joint, to chicken sandwiches at Shaq’s Big Chicken, there are plenty of tasty options that won’t cost you anything.

Java Blue Cafe (Deck 6)
The Java Blue Cafe is your dedicated coffee shop on Carnival Celebration. Located in the new Celebration Central zone, this venue opens at 6 AM most mornings for cruisers to get their caffeine fix. Serving espresso-based beverages and milk shakes that are included in the Cheers drink package , you might find yourself visiting this cafe quite a bit.
While here, you might be tempted by some of the food offerings as well. Java Blue Cafe serves breakfast items from around 7/7:30 to 9:30 AM daily. These options include breakfast sandwiches and continental pastry items. The cafe also serves lunch items from around 3 to 8:30/9:30 PM. These items include sandwiches, chicken pies, empanadas, and more. There are also desserts available, but they will cost a nominal fee.
Java Blue Menu
Carnivale Restaurant (Deck 6)
The Carnival Celebration restaurants include two different main dining room experiences. If you are a more traditional cruiser, you can opt for Assigned Dining at either 5:30 PM (early) or 7:45 PM (late) seating times. The Deck 6 Carnivale Restaurant and the first level of the Festivale Restaurant are reserved for Assigned Dining.
Cruisers who want to try a variety of the dining options on the ship, might want to select Your Time Dining. With this option, cruisers can dine whenever they want at various locations by joining a virtual queue in the Carnival HUB app when they are ready to eat. This option is available from 5:30 to 9 PM daily.
![carnival cruise food menu carnival cruise food menu](https://eatsleepcruise.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/85625736-F8F6-45BB-9491-F36972E6F353-1024x768.jpeg.optimal.jpeg)
Regardless of whether you pick Assigned Dining or Your Time Dining, the Carnivale and Festivale restaurants offer the same rotational menu. These menus do change nightly with a few always available items, like the famous chocolate melting cake.
Carnivale is the smaller of the two dining venues and is located on the portside of Deck 6.
Festivale Restaurant (Decks 6 & 7)
Festivale is the larger of Carnival Celebration’s two main dining rooms. This 2-story main dining room is located on Decks 6 and 7. Deck 6 is reserved primarily for Assigned Dining while Deck 7 is utilized for Your Time Dining.
The Festivale restaurant is also open for breakfast daily from 7 to 9 AM. On sea days, the restaurant serves a special Sea Day Brunch from 8:30 AM to 12 PM. This Sea Day Brunch is a must-try, especially the skillet cake.
![carnival cruise food menu carnival cruise food menu](https://eatsleepcruise.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/BFF62135-8D10-4B14-A353-EA46CC25E218-1024x768.jpeg.optimal.jpeg)
Once again, the dinner menu at this restaurant rotates each evening like most cruise lines offering a wide array of starters, entrees, and desserts.
This venue also serves lobster on one of Carnival’s elegant nights. During our sailing, “lobster night” was the first elegant night; however, Carnival has indicated that this will be changing to the second elegant night in the near future.
Further, across all of the Carnival Cruise Line ships , extra entrees in the main dining room are an upcharge. Guests may continue to order a second complimentary entrée if they choose; however, a third entrée will now incur a $5 charge.

Chibang! (Deck 8)
Chibang was created in response to guest feedback requesting more diverse dining options. This fairly new restaurant concept features both Mexican and Chinese dishes. Currently, this restaurant is complimentary on Excel Class ships.
Chibang is open for lunch on sea days from 12 to 2 PM and dinner nightly from 5:30 to 9:30 PM. Guests wishing to dine at this venue can join the virtual queue on the Carnival HUB app and will be notified when their table is ready. In our experience, we never waited more than 10 minutes for a table. The app also indicates an estimated current wait time at each venue.
![carnival cruise food menu Carnival Celebration Restaurants with Menus](https://eatsleepcruise.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/F66D1430-F404-4C7D-96AF-54D0E10F5789-1024x768.jpeg.optimal.jpeg)
For lunch, Chibang’s menu offers noodle bowls and burrito bowls. For dinner, the menu is more expansive offering Asian items like lettuce wraps, Singapore chili shrimp, and Kung Pao chicken. Mexican menu items include loaded nachos, tacos, pollo en mole, and pescado frito.
With so many offerings, you can certainly dine at Chibang more than once during your cruise vacation.
Chibang Lunch | Dinner Menu
Cucina del Capitano (Deck 8)
A specialty restaurant on other Carnival ships, Cucina del Capitano is also complimentary on Carnival Celebration at the moment. The cruise line indicates that they don’t foresee changing this any time soon.
This Italian restaurant is open for lunch from 12 to 2 PM on sea days and for dinner from 5:30 to 9:30 PM nightly. Just like Chibang, you can join the virtual queue whenever you want to dine here. Of note, if you have assigned dining in the main dining room, you won’t be able to join the virtual queue until after 7:45 PM.
![carnival cruise food menu carnival cruise food menu](https://eatsleepcruise.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/7644F972-6F35-4039-8D19-CD4B3853585F-1024x768.jpeg.optimal.jpeg)
For lunch, this venue serves a small menu of appetizers, soups, and pizza, along with a create your own pasta bowl section. At dinner, cruisers can enjoy favorites like Nonna’s meatball, chicken parm, short rib, and tiramisu.
Cucina del Capitano Lunch | Dinner Menu
Miami Slice (Deck 8)
Located in the vibrant 820 Biscayne zone on Carnival Celebration, Miami Slice is your go-to spot for pizza. This eatery is open daily from 9 AM to 4 AM to fulfill your cravings any time of day.
This pizzeria features a walk-up counter where guests can order fresh out of the oven pizza slices or personal-sized pies. You can then enjoy your pizza in the nearby seating area or take it to-go to enjoy anywhere around the ship.
Don’t be surprised to find a line here, as Miami Slice is quite popular.

Deco Deli (Deck 8)
Adjacent to Miami Slice, you will find Deco Deli. This counter-style sandwich shop serves up a menu of traditional deli sandwiches along with some Miami and Cuban favorites.
Deco Deli is open daily from 12 to 10 PM.
Deco Deli Menu
Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse | Brewhouse (Deck 8)
Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse | Brewhouse is another one of the Carnival Celebration restaurants. The BBQ joint is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner on Carnival Celebration. Dinner at this venue is also complimentary for a limited time; though, you will notice a few differences in the menu.
Guy’s serves breakfast from around 6:30/7:30 to 9/10:30 AM. This small buffet area features all the breakfast staples. The venue also serves lunch from 12 to 2:30 PM on sea days in a buffet-style setting outdoors on the waterfront area.
![carnival cruise food menu Carnival Celebration Restaurants with Menus](https://eatsleepcruise.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/BF5D3591-9D2B-4731-B85B-939351DF11BE-1024x768.jpeg.optimal.jpeg)
Dinner is served in the restaurant nightly from 5:30 to 9:30 PM. The menu features all your BBQ favorites with a side of live music. You can choose from chicken, brisket, sausage, and more. St. Louis ribs and prime rib are available for an up-charge.
Further, don’t forget to grab a signature ParchedPig beer brewed right onboard the ship.
Guy’s Pig & Anchor Lunch | Dinner Menu
BlueIguana Cantina (Deck 16)
Located on the Lido deck, BlueIguana Cantina serves up Mexican favorites for both breakfast and lunch. You can customize your breakfast or lunch burrito any way you like as they are freshly prepared just for you. There is even a salsa bar located nearby.
![carnival cruise food menu carnival cruise food menu](https://eatsleepcruise.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/36190D1A-D77E-47BF-850B-81F5ECE51F10-1024x768.jpeg.optimal.jpeg)
If you’d prefer tacos or a bowl, you can get those too at the BlueIguana Cantina.
This venue is open daily from 7/8 to 10:30 AM for breakfast and 12 to 2:30/3:30 PM for lunch.
BlueIguana Breakfast | Lunch Menu
Street Eats (Deck 16)
Street Eats is also located on the pool deck offering food truck-type selections. Here, you will find Steam Dream, Mad Sizzle, and Time Fries. Each of these venues features one selection a day, and this selection changes daily.
Think items like load fries, dumplings, satays, and more.
The Street Eats hours vary with the stalls opening somewhere between 11:30 AM and 2 PM, then remaining open until 4 or 5 PM. This is largely dependent on your port of call times.
Sample Street Eat Menus

Lido Marketplace (Deck 16)
The Lido Marketplace is your typical cruise ship buffet, featuring a variety of selections for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Honestly, with so many other offerings on Carnival Celebration, we did not eat here at all during our cruise.
The Lido Marketplace is typically open for breakfast from around 6:30/7:30 to 11:30 AM. The venue then reopens for lunch from around 12 to 2:30/3:30 PM. Then, dinner is available from 6 to 9:30 PM nightly.
You’ll find a salad station, dessert station, hot entrees section, cold cuts selection, and more. In comparison to other cruise lines, the offerings are more limited in the buffet; this is likely because there is so much else to eat around the ship.
Big Chicken (Deck 16)
Perhaps one of our favorite newer additions to Carnival ships is Shaq’s Big Chicken. NBA Hall of Famer and Carnival’s Chief Fun Officer, Shaquille O’Neal, scored big with this quick service eatery located aft on the pool deck.
![carnival cruise food menu Carnival Celebration Restaurants with Menus](https://eatsleepcruise.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/C748C5B8-7C1D-423D-B170-4604AC32DA54-1024x768.jpeg.optimal.jpeg)
Big Chicken is open for breakfast from around 7/8 to 11 AM and for lunch from 11 AM to 5 PM daily. This venue serves up signature chicken sandwiches with Shaq’s special sauce, in addition to chicken tenders and fries. There’s also chicken and biscuits for breakfast.
This is a popular spot on Carnival Celebration so don’t be surprised to find a line most times during the day.
Big Chicken Menu
Guy’s Burger Joint (Deck 17)
Relocated to Deck 17 above the Lido deck, Guy’s Burger Joint serves up some of the best burgers at sea. In partnership with Guy Fieri, this poolside shack features fresh off the grill burgers and fries with a toppings bar for you to customize your meal to perfection.
Guy’s Burger Joint is open every day from around 12 to 6 PM to satisfy all your burger cravings. How many can you eat in just one week?
![carnival cruise food menu Carnival Celebration cruise review](https://eatsleepcruise.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/FE9FED57-DA5C-4C4D-8F07-F95673F662C7-1024x768.jpeg.optimal.jpeg)
This is perhaps the busiest quick service eatery on Carnival Celebration, so don’t be surprised to find Disney-style switchbacks. Though, we never waited more than about 15 minutes.
Guy’s Burger Joint Menu
Fresh Creations (Deck 18)
Serenity is the adult only retreat on Carnival Cruise Line ships. This private oasis offers plenty of space with comfy lounge furniture, a pool, whirlpools, a bar, and even some healthy lunch options at the Fresh Creations salad bar.
The salad bar is open from 12 to 2:30 PM on sea days so you don’t have to give up your slice of paradise when you get hungry.
Fresh Creations Menu
Swirls (Decks 8, 16, 17)
For those looking for their soft serve fix, you can rejoice that there are three locations onboard Carnival Celebration. Choose between vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, or twist.
There is one located in the Heroes Tribute Lounge on Deck 8 aft. The second is found on Deck 16 aft near the Tides Bar and Tides Pool. Finally, the third soft serve station can be found on Deck 17 midship near Guy’s Burger Joint.

The menu at Fahrenheit 555 features upscale offerings like shrimp cocktail, tuna tartare, and premium cuts of beef.
Fahrenheit 555 Menu
Bonsai Teppanyaki (Deck 8)
Bonsai Teppanyaki is another one of the Carnival Celebration restaurants. This Japanese-style hibachi restaurant offers a multi-course menu for a flat fee of $35 for lunch and $38 for dinner.
This restaurant is open for lunch on sea days from 12 to 3 PM and nightly for dinner from 5:30 to 10:15 PM.
Entrée selections range from chicken, filet, lobster tail, salmon, and shrimp. All meals also include starters and dessert.
Whenever we have dined at a teppanyaki restaurant on a cruise, the food is always as good as the culinary show! This venue is very small so make sure to secure reservations early.
Bonsai Teppanyaki Menu
Bonsai Sushi (Deck 8)
Located adjacent to Bonsai Teppanyaki is Bonsai Sushi. This sushi lovers paradise is an a la carte venue that is open for dinner daily from 5 PM to 12 AM. The venue is also open for lunch on sea days from 12 to 2:30 PM.
![carnival cruise food menu Carnival Celebration Restaurants with Menus](https://eatsleepcruise.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/ECB73F7A-D93D-4324-A21A-2C4863C461E9-1024x768.jpeg.optimal.jpeg)
Bonsai Sushi offers several sushi and sashimi selections, as well as noodle bowls and Japanese small plates. So, even if you are not a fan of sushi, there are probably other menu items for you to enjoy at this venue for reasonable prices.
Bonsai Sushi Menu
Rudi’s Seagrill (Deck 8)
Celebrity Chef Rudi Sodamin brings his creations to life on Carnival Celebration at Rudi’s Seagrill. This specialty restaurant is open nightly for dinner from 5:30 to 9:30 PM for an upcharge of $48 per person.

As you might expect, the menu is heavy on seafood with mussels, scallops, shrimp, oysters, calamari, and lobster all on the menu. There’s even a crab-stuffed lobster tail. For non-seafood lovers, you have a choice of chicken, a pork chop, or a NY strip.
The intimate atmosphere of this restaurant makes it another great choice for an elegant night dinner.
Rudi’s Seagrill Menu

Today’s Bonus Cruising Tip
I ALWAYS buy travel insurance (especially during these uncertain times) to cover my cruises, but I NEVER purchase it through Carnival . It costs more and usually covers less than policies you purchase on your own. I go through sites like travelinsurance.com * to compare plans and prices and get the best deal for the coverage I want. Spend less on insurance and spend more on excursions, special onboard cruise experiences and…future cruises!
![carnival cruise food menu](https://i0.wp.com/profcruise.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Screen-Shot-2024-02-18-at-8.22.01-AM.png?resize=1024%2C129&ssl=1)
And with that…
Class Dismissed!

First Look at New Carnival Cruise Line Menus: What’s Different, What’s Missing

Cruise Cruise Line menus undergo an extensive makeover every few years. The changes make some guests wary, while others are happy to see the new choices in the main dining room.
The new Carnival Cruise Line menus have been introduced with assistance from chief culinary officer/celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse.
![carnival cruise food menu carnival cruise line menus](https://cruiseradio.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Christine-and-Emeril-Food-1030x773.jpeg)
Read on to find out what’s changed, which items come with an added charge , and why the menu being rolled out might not be the final version.
New Carnival Cruise Line Menus
The new Carnival Cruise Line menus were introduced in June of 2023 aboard the Carnival Dream , with the line saying they will have a fleetwide rollout over several months. So what do the new menus look like? Here are some of the new main dining room offerings.
![carnival cruise food menu carnival cruise line menus](https://cruiseradio.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/CARNIVAL-CRUISE-DINING-ROOM-MENU-NIGHT-6-2023-562x1030.png)
How Often Do Carnival’s Menus Change?
![carnival cruise food menu carnival venezia gondola main dining room](https://cruiseradio.net/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/PHOTO-2022-12-12-14-17-41-1030x685.jpg)
While Norwegian Cruise Line has recently experimented with a set menu — meaning the same selections would be offered every night of a sailing — Carnival continues to offer a different menu each night of the cruise.
This means that a cruiser could quickly eat in the complimentary dining room every night of their sailing without ever ordering the same thing twice.
Because overhauling menus is such a significant undertaking, it makes sense that Carnival would want to introduce the menus on a few ships to receive feedback and consider making changes before finalizing them and rolling them out across the entire fleet.
What Kind of Food Is Served In Carnival’s Main Dining Room?
![carnival cruise food menu carnival cruise line menus horizon dining](https://cruiseradio.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/CL_AF_VS16_HorizDin_0593-1030x686.jpg)
Because nearly every passenger will enjoy at least a few meals in the main dining room — and those guests have diverse tastes — it’s important that menus feature something for everyone.
That holds when looking at starters, entrees, or desserts. While you won’t find anything involving molecular gastronomy, you’ll find steak, fish, salads, soups, and vegetarian offerings… pretty much what you expect on any cruise line.
In revealing details about the menus, Carnival President Christine Duffy said “nearly 60 new entree presentations” were featured over a week.
Of course, the keyword there is “presentations.”
In other words, you aren’t finding 60 entirely new entrees on the revised menus, but rather some which are entirely new, and others that were previously offered by have been tweaked in one way or another.
So what makes these new Carnival Cruise Line menus different? A few things.
So let’s break things down by section.
Starters (appetizers)
![carnival cruise food menu shrimp cocktail Carnival Cruise Line Menus](https://cruiseradio.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/carnival-cruise-shrimp-cocktail-1030x772.jpg)
One of the first things we noticed is that you’ll find a smaller portion of one of the main entrees offered as an appetizer each day.
For example, on one of the dinner menus, the Pappardelle with Braised Lamb is listed as an appetizer and also, further down, as an entree.
You’ll find favorites like a shrimp cocktail, Caesar salad, and roasted tomato soup elsewhere. Again, these will vary each night.
Most entree items on Carnival Cruise Line menus can be ordered as an appetizer, for an entree, or an entree for the appetizer. You just have to ask the wait staff.
Bonsai Sushi Ship
![carnival cruise food menu Carnival Cruise Line Menus sushi](https://cruiseradio.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/CL_Bonsai_Sushi_ANP_CS_131-1030x686.jpg)
This is the first of two sections offering for-fee dishes you would typically find in specialty restaurants. The Bonsai Sushi Ship For Two includes a California Roll, Bang Ban Bonsai Roll, and six pieces of assorted sushi.
The cost is $26, with an 18 percent service charge automatically added.
Emeril’s Selects is now on Carnival Cruise Line menus
If there’s one section that we’re most excited about, it might be this one. Each night, an appetizer and entree specifically created by Lagasse can be found here.
One evening, the appetizer was Beef Carpaccio, with the entree being Herb Crusted Salmon. On another evening, the Emeril Selects choices were a Cerviche Crudo appetizer and a Jambalaya Pasta for the entree.
Although Lagasse does have stand-alone, for-fee venues on several of the newer ships (Carnival Celebration, Mardi Gras, the upcoming Jubilee), the Emeril Selects offered in the main dining room are complimentary.
Main entrees
![carnival cruise food menu Carnival Cruise Line Menus sunrise](https://cruiseradio.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/CL_SH_SunriseRestaurant_DSC4296.jpg)
As expected, this is where you’ll see a variety of dishes covering the gauntlet on the Carnival Cruise Line menus, from Seafood Newburg to Beef Wellington.
But this is also where you’ll find the “Featured Indian Vegetarian” option, which changes each evening, and other vegetarian options, such as Baked Vegetable Au Gratin.
Several of the entrees are downright intriguing. For example, the Roasted Artichoke, Potato, and Cheesecake. That’s right, cheesecake. Vegetarians can enjoy a Herb Crusted Stuffed Portobello Mushroom.
Featured Salad
The menu will feature a specific entree salad each evening, something cruisers have requested for years.
As with the entrees, the selection here changes nightly. But it is important to note that in this case, “salad” does not equate to “vegetarian.”
For example, one menu’s Featured Salad is the Ultimate Cobb Salad (which includes chicken and bacon). Another featured salad is the Smoked Salmon with Farro and Goat Cheese.
Everyday Selections
This section only offers two entrees, and they do not rotate. One is the Grilled Chicken breast, while the other is the Broiled Striploin Steak.
This is the perfect section for those who’ve maybe been eating a little wildly all day (or all week!) and want something very basic. Or, for the picky eater who wants one of these things every night. (No judgment!)
Steakhouse Selections on Carnival Cruise Line menus
![carnival cruise food menu Carnival cruise line menus steakhouse menu](https://cruiseradio.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/STEAKHOUSE-SELECTION-MAIN-DINING-ROOM-CARNIVAL-1030x773.jpg)
This is the second of two sections on the new menus featuring for-fee items normally found in specialty restaurants.
Here, four entrees do not rotate and are available each night. Surf & Turf, Broiled Filet Mignon, New York Strip Loin Steak, and Grilled Lamb Chops are those items.
These are available for $23 per entree, with an 18 percent service charge automatically added.
Dessert on Carnival Cruise Line Menus
Yes, the Carnival Melting Chocolate Cake is available every night. This is, after all, one of the most popular items to ever hit a cruise ship menu.
The menu also features nightly fresh fruit and a selection of ice cream and sorbets. Other items on the menu rotate, including treats like Panna Cotta and Hazelnut Mousse. One change that not everyone loves — and some have campaigned to have changed — is that the Cheese Plate is only offered one night as a dessert.
Carnival is also working out new vegetarian menus for breakfast, lunch, and dinner that are expected to be rolled out sometime in 2023. These new menus are still in the development stages.
Carnival Kids Menu
![carnival cruise food menu Carnival Cruise Line Kids Menu](https://cruiseradio.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/carnival-cruise-kids-menu-751x1030.jpg)
Given that Carnival Cruise Line proudly proclaims it carries more families each year than any other operator, you can bet that they know how to satisfy hungry (and potentially picky) young eaters when meal time rolls around.
When it comes to entrees on the kid menu at Carnival , there are plenty of choices that kids will love, such as grilled cheese sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs, and pizza.
Translation: Exactly the kind of foods kids love! But of course, children can always order off the regular menu… and we’ve known more than a few adults to order off the menu meant for kids!
Of course, Carnival Cruise Line is happy to accommodate your child’s specific dietary needs or preferences. Just let your waiter know, and they will work with the kitchen to create a delicious meal that meets your child’s needs.
What Else You Need to Know About Carnival Cruise Line Menus
![carnival cruise food menu Carnival Cruise Line Lobster](https://cruiseradio.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/dinner-lobster-1030x772.jpeg)
To reduce waste, the new menus now state that there will be a five-dollar charge for the “third entree or more.” In other words, they’re complimentary if you want to order two entrees. If a third dish catches your eye and you want to try it, you can do so, but for five dollars.
Carnival is enforcing this, as I ordered three lobsters on my last cruise and was charged a $5 fee for the third entree.
![carnival cruise food menu carnival cruise line main dining room](https://cruiseradio.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/CARNIVAL-LIBERTY-MAIN-DINING-ROOM-1030x772.jpg)
However, this same charge does not apply to appetizers or desserts. When asked on Facebook, Carnival’s Brand Ambassador, John Heald, told his followers that selections in both categories were “unlimited.”
As always, guests can order beer, wine or cocktails from their server in the main dining room, and the Cheers! drink package is accepted here as in all other venues on board the ship.
Of course, if these new menus don’t look appetizing, you can always go to Guy’s Burger Joint before 6:00 p.m., the buffet, or one of the other dining venues available on the ship. And if you still aren’t happy with the offerings at the Lido Marketplace buffet, there is always room service.

Our kids’ menus, available at most onboard dining venues, feature foods that are delicious enough — and fun enough — to satisfy even the pickiest of eaters. We’ve got all the familiar options they love from home, like spaghetti and meatballs, chicken nuggets, hot dogs, mac-n-cheese, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and — yes mom — fresh fruit and veggies. They should save room for dessert, though, because with sweet stuff like banana splits and chocolate brownies, your young’uns are going to be pretty excited. There’s even free late-night pizza and soft serve… but these are subject to bed-time, of course.

Carnival Cruise Line quietly takes away a loyalty program perk
Cruisers who sail frequently on the same cruise line earn loyalty program perks that can be quite meaningful.
Royal Caribbean, for example, gives Diamond-tier and higher members of its Crown & Anchor Society loyalty program access to a special lounge, free beverage vouchers each day, and other perks like free days of internet service.
Earning Diamond status is not easy. You earn 1 point for every night you're on board, 2 as a solo traveler, or 3 if you are a solo passenger in a suite. You need 80 points to achieve what's generally considered to be the first meaningful tier in the program, measured by significant perks.
Related: Carnival Cruise Line makes a bold ruling on cruise ship ducks
Once a passenger earns a loyalty program level, they appreciate the benefits offered. They likely looked forward to reaching the tier for a long time, and that makes any changes a cruise line makes to its loyalty program benefits very risky.
Take away something people felt they earned, and the cruise line looks as if it cheaped out on its best customers. Even a tweak that seems positive on its face can lead to a backlash.
Royal Caribbean, for example, used to offer an all-you-can-drink happy hour in the Crown Lounge from 5 to 7 p.m. For social-distancing reasons during the covid pandemic, that was replaced with four daily free-drink vouchers for Diamond members, five for Diamond+, and six for top-tier Pinnacle members.
Unless you really hit the happy hour hard, it's difficult to see how that offer was better than the current voucher-based system. Yet that did not stop some passengers from being angry and even threatening to take their business to other cruise lines.
Now, Carnival has removed a loyalty perk from its VIFP program, and members, if they notice, are likely to be angry.
Carnival makes a loyalty program change
Carnival's Very Important Fun Person loyalty program is very simple.
"Earn VIFP points just lounging by the pool. Each day you cruise is another VIFP point earned, so whether you like long cruises or spontaneous getaways, every one is totally worth it," the cruise line says.
Unlike the Royal Caribbean program, you don't earn more points for sailing solo or staying in a suite. Carnival also does not offer an equivalent to the Crown Lounge or Royal Caribbean's beverage vouchers.

It does offer priority boarding to its Platinum (75-199 VIFP points) and Diamond (200 or more VIFP points), which its rival no longer offers. Carnival also offers Platinum and Diamond members a unique collectible pin on every sailing, as well as a piece of logoed merchandise (like a tote bag or a towel).
Carnival's top-tier loyalty members also get priority reservations in specialty dining restaurants. Royal Caribbean does not offer that, but RCL Diamond Plus members (175-699 points) get a buy-one-get-one deal at specialty dining on the first two nights of their cruise.

Carnival makes a loyalty program change
Carnival recently took away a meaningful loyalty perk without notifying VIFP members. It was simply on the list and then it wasn't. The change was first spotted by Cruisehive.
"Carnival Cruise Line has quietly removed a popular benefit for its Diamond and Platinum level returning guests, without notice of the discontinuation," the website reported. "The $25 FunPlay credit in the ship’s casino was never intended as a long-term benefit, but nevertheless it has been a popular perk that guests have enjoyed for several years."
The cruise line's brand ambassador, John Heald, confirmed the change on his Facebook page.
Related: Carnival considers main dining room change Royal Caribbean made
“Yes, the casino has decided to remove the $25," he wrote. "The $25 FunPlay casino credit was one of our temporary offers to our top-tier VIFP guests. With a full suite of casino promotions and activities, we are sunsetting this credit and continue to look for other ways to make sure our loyal guests have a great time while cruising with us."
Royal Caribbean gives all Crown & Anchor Society members between $2 and $8 of free play in its casinos on every sailing.
Carnival's $25 credit was initially offered when the cruise line had to cancel slot tournaments due to social distancing. Even after those tournaments were brought back, the credit remained until its recent removal.

Behind the scenes: How this Carnival cruise ship galley serves thousands of meals a night

On any given night, Pacific Restaurant on Carnival Cruise Line’s newest ship is a hub of activity. On multiple evenings during a recent sailing, guests lined up at the entrance to one of the main dining rooms on Carnival Jubilee , which gave way to a two-deck space with ornate, twinkling light fixtures and soaring white columns.
But a windowless room several decks below is where the real action happens.
The ship’s main galley, lined with metallic counters, stoves and ceiling panels, cranks out 15,000 dishes per night on average. The kitchen – one of 18 galleys overall – supplies multiple meals, but dinner is its busiest time.
“It's not a small operation by any means, especially on this class of ship,” Vivek Menon, the ship’s Food and Beverage Director told USA TODAY on board. Here’s how they do it.
Ever wanted to ride an airport bag belt? You can't, but we can show you where they go.
Behind the scenes with Disney's baby elephant: 'We don't force our animals to do anything'
How does a cruise ship galley work?
Lots of planning happens before meals ever hit guests’ plates. Food orders are placed around two weeks in advance and loaded onto the vessel on turnaround days, said Menon, whose food and beverage team includes just under 900 members (Jubilee can accommodate more than 6,000 guests).
The ship's galley staff cooks roughly 5,000 pounds of whole chicken, grills around 5,000 pounds of strip steak and bakes approximately 600 loaves of bread every week.
One morning in late February, fish was thawing in a walk-in refrigerator the size of a small bedroom on deck 3, two decks below the galley. According to a label on its exterior, a nearby freezer housed ice cream, while another room was filled with boxes of cruise essentials like Grey Goose Vodka and Crown Royal whiskey.
Chefs then place orders with the vessel’s storeroom team two days before they need the ingredients. “Pre-prep” – such as trimming and marinating chicken breasts – takes place a day beforehand, with more prep following on the day of service, though the time required varies.
Those chicken breasts, for example, might be prepped an hour prior to service. By contrast, “Prime rib cooks for six hours,” Menon said. “A short rib braises for 12 hours, so obviously that has a huge lead time. So, it depends on the dish.”
Then it’s showtime. The galley provides food for an average of 4,000 people a night between Pacific Restaurant and the ship’s other dining room, Atlantic Restaurant.
Orders start trickling in at around 5:45 p.m., but the crew is ready. Chefs are given a head count at the beginning of the evening, at peak time and near the end of dinner.
For example, Menon said, “If we’re cooking 1,000 fish for early dining, 1,000 filets, the counts are spread out in such a way that in the first 15 minutes, the cook is running around 200 ahead of count, because these counts are very quickly going to catch up,” Menon said.
As orders slow down, they narrow the gap and reduce output accordingly. “At the end of dinner service, you have very little left,” Menon said. “By the time it's nine 9, 9:15, we’re already down one or two, four or five pieces, depending on the volume we're setting up.” Guest flow differs each evening, however.
At the beginning of a cruise, the crew starts logging how much of a given item is used on that sailing – down to details like how guests want their steak cooked – which allows them to prepare more or less as needed.
Does food go to waste?
Tracking guest preferences is about more than just providing good service. The line has paid close attention to what goes uneaten as part of efforts to reduce food waste. “We looked at what the guests don't like, what's coming back on the plate,” Menon said. Then they can make changes.
Carnival also introduced QR-code menus in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has made it easier to tweak menus (though they have printed ones as well). Other measures, such as adding a charge for once-included room service in 2022, have helped the line move closer to those aims, too.
“Before (when) you walked down a corridor, every second cabin, you're going to see a plate outside with some things half-eaten because it was complimentary,” Menon said.
The line generated nearly 2.5 pounds of food waste per person around five years ago. Now that number is about 1.5 pounds. (Read more about how cruise lines have been working to reduce food waste here .)
What is Carnival’s Chef’s Table?
If guests want to peek behind the culinary curtain, they can see the galley for themselves. Carnival’s Chef’s Table experience features a tour and a multi-course dinner for between 12 and 16 people, according to the line’s website .
The sleek dining room that hosts the dinner on Jubilee was tucked deep inside the galley space, giving passengers up-close views of the kitchen. The menus – which can’t be found elsewhere on board – vary from ship to ship but have included items like knotted parmesan herb brioche, black-garlic cannelloni, a “lamb trilogy” (roasted, broiled and confit) and more.
When is the best time to take a cruise? We broke it down by region.
The experience is available on all Carnival ships and ranges from $90-$150 per person, depending on the vessel and the menu. Passengers can make reservations online after booking their cruise.

Carnival is known for ultra-cheap cruises. I sailed on its new ship — and I'm not sure that's completely true.
- Carnival Cruise Line is well known for its relatively affordable fares .
- But my recent Carnival Firenze cruise was filled with enticing pay-to-play amenities.
- Even the complimentary venues had up-charged options, making it easy for travelers to blow past their budget.

If you aren't careful, your Carnival cruise could quickly become as expensive as an Oceania one.
Peruse any of the "US' most budget-friendly cruise lines" lists, and you're sure to find Carnival somewhere near the top. In 2024, its most affordable itinerary is $164 per person for a four-night sailing from Miami — more than $20 cheaper than Royal Caribbean and Norwegian's least expensive ones.
That's about $40 a day for food, accommodations, onboard entertainment, and the ability to see several destinations in one vacation.
Sounds like a steal, right?
Well, not quite.
You'll be met with a flurry of tempting up-charged amenities the moment you board Carnival's ships . So, if you're prone to giving into these little luxuries, you can kiss your budget goodbye.
I went on my first Carnival cruise in mid-May: a four-night sailing from Long Beach, California, on Carnival Firenze.
I paid $735 for a solo interior cabin, including optional gratuities.
If that sounds relatively expensive, you'd be right. Carnival Firenze is the company's latest vessel, and newer cruise ships generally command a pricing premium.
It's also worth noting that I had booked it less than 10 days before embarkation. Oops.
I thought I knew what to expect when it came to the cruise industry's 'pay-to-play' game.
Mass-market cruise lines have been increasingly slapping fees on on-board amenities and activities. I knew excesses like alcohol, WiFi, and specialty dining would cost extra, as is typical across the industry.
The only one I fell for was WiFi, of which the premium package cost me $85 for all four nights. I was there for work, after all.
Cocktails were generally about $13, while beers and seltzers were about $9 each. Specialty restaurants like teppanyaki and Italian cost about $40 per person, while the steakhouse was $49.
None of these were surprising. Even premium cruise lines charge extra for higher-end restaurants and beverages.
But on Carnival, it felt like almost everything beyond the bare minimum carried an additional fee.
Even complimentary dining venues dangled tempting dollar sign-afflicted dishes — including the buffet, where guests had to pay for chicken wings.
Want an empanada? The Empanadas and Pie kiosk sold them for $1.50 apiece.
Craving a lobster roll? The dinnertime Seafood Shack booth (which otherwise has free breakfast and lunch options) sells one for $18.
Looking for some pizza? You could grab a free pepperoni slice at the pizza stand — or pay $6 for the fancier Korean barbecue steak pie.
That darn dollar sign symbol tormented me morning to night, on and off the ship.
I had been craving a juice for breakfast. Too bad it was $5 (in the complimentary main dining room, no less).
I would've loved some popcorn during the evening movie showings. A bag costs $4.
During our second stop in Ensenada, Mexico, I briefly considered taking the shuttle from the port to downtown. However, that would've been another $4.
But the most egregious 'incident' came during afternoon tea.
The daily schedule denoted pay-to-play events with a small dollar sign symbol. "Tea Time" didn't have one, so off I scurried, excited for some free mid-afternoon caffeine and sweet treats.
You can probably guess where this story is headed.
After I took my seat, a waitperson arrived at my table with an organized box of tea bags, giving me just enough time to review my options before announcing they were $1.50 each. On principle, I declined.
A few minutes later, he returned to my table to let me know that he did, in fact, have some free options stashed behind the up-charged bags. They were the same as those available in the buffet: Lipton and Bigelow's green tea.
During breakfast, one of the servers joked that my croissant and Lipton tea would cost $20 each.
I knew he was kidding, but for a split second, I was worried he wasn't. At that point, I expected almost everything I wanted to come with a price tag.
Carnival, I get it. Get that bag, sis!
But not being immediately upfront about the $1.50 tea bag and otherwise free options felt unecessarily deceitful.
In the company's defense, not everything had a price tag. Fun activities like the mini-golf course, waterslides, and fear-of-height-inducing ropes course were complimentary and great for forgetting how annoyed I was about "tea gate."
Carnival is just following the industry trend.
There's a reason onboard spending has skyrocketed over the last year. Mass-market cruise lines have been increasingly adopting a model reminiscent of budget airlines: offer a low base fare and present a slew of irresistible amenities at an additional price.
Competitors like Norwegian and Royal Caribbean are repeat offenders, too.
On Norwegian Prima , mini-golf costs $10 per person, while the VR arcade sets guests back $29 for one hour.
On Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas , mini-golf is free! But walk slow if you decide to spend money on the ship's part-agility, part-ziplining course. It costs $49 to participate — and could be completed in a minute or so.
So yes, going on an ultra-cheap Carnival cruise is possible if you’re like me, stubbornly unwilling to spend extra.
But if you're a pushover who easily gives into temptation, be sure to develop a backbone before you cruise with Carnival .
If you don't, mai tais and movie popcorn costs could add up quicker than expected.
