All About the Celebrating Disney100 at Disneyland Resort Guided Tour

Celebrating Disney100

A new guided tour debuted at the Disneyland Resort earlier this month. The Celebrating Disney100 at Disneyland Resort tour is a living story that takes you through iconic locations across the Disneyland Resort while sharing the company’s 100-year history.

“We wanted this tour to be inspirational for our guests and cast and remind them to never give up, everyone has a story to tell and you need to believe that your story is worth telling,” said Guided Tour Hostess Paula Hasler. Paula, along with cast members Sam Denny, Emma Sickles and J’Amy Pacheco, designed the tour with input from additional cast members.

“Getting to write a tour was a dream come true,” said J’Amy. “Working with three people who shared my passion for Disney and love of storytelling was an exciting experience.”

For Emma, working on this tour was nothing short of destiny. “I remember coming to Disneyland and seeing this beautiful woman dressed in a plaid skirt, leading guests around,” said Emma. “I turned to my mom and said ‘I don’t know what she’s doing, but I want to do that.’ So, I practiced in my garage and little did I know that I would get to write a new tour for the Disneyland Resort.”

“J’Amy created a beautiful beginning that drops guests right into the story of Walt sitting underneath his dreaming tree in Marceline, Missouri,” said Sam. “It made us cry when we all read it aloud for the first time.”

“We had to start with that story,” said J’Amy. “You cannot talk about the company’s 100-year history without talking about the roots, where it all started.”

animation academy

Starting in Disney California Adventure park, guests learn about the founding of The Walt Disney Company and Walt’s move to California in the 1920s, with a suitcase and a dream. Unique to this tour is the opportunity to chat with an animation artist and sketch a special character for the Disney100 celebration at Animation Academy in Hollywood Land.

After putting pencil to paper, guests travel to Disneyland park to learn about opening day and technological advancements that made the park the place we all know and love!

“In a personal letter to [Walt’s wife] Lillian after Walt’s passing, President [Lyndon B.] Johnson wrote ‘Beauty, joy and truth are immortal. The magic of Walt Disney was larger than life and the treasures he left will endure to entertain and enlighten worlds to come,’” said Sam.

The approximately two-hour tour ends with a complimentary photo in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle and reserved viewing for the “Magic Happens” Parade. Reservations are highly recommended!

What to Know About Disneyland's 100 Years of Wonder Celebrations in 2023

By Megan duBois

Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland Park

In 1923, the Walt Disney Company, then known as Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio, was founded. In the almost 100 years since the company’s founding, it’s expanded to be a global empire with parks and resorts around the world, five  cruise ships—with three more on the way—and a handful of movie studios under its umbrella.

Starting January 27, 2023, those  traveling to the Disneyland Resort can experience the destination in a whole new way as it becomes the heart of the Disney 100 Years of Wonder celebration (Disney100), a Disney-wide celebration highlighting the past, present, and future of the brand. If you’re going to the Disneyland Resort after the festivities kick off, this is what you can expect.

An all-new Mickey’s Toontown is coming

One of the most beloved areas of Disneyland Park is Mickey’s Toontown . While the majority of the theme park land won’t reopen for guests until spring 2023, the new Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway attraction located inside Mickey’s Toontown will open on January 27, just in time for the start of Disney100.

The family-friendly attraction is similar to the ride of the same name at Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studios. On the ride, guests hop aboard a train driven by Goofy and get taken into the cartoon world of Mickey Mouse and his pals, only to have a few hijinks ensue. One of the most significant changes to the Disneyland version of the attraction will be the queue—instead of highlighting different Mickey Mouse cartoons, it will be a tribute to the famous mouse with props and other memorabilia from his illustrious career.

While in the queue, be on the lookout for movie posters that feature Disney characters like Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Max, and more as the stars of other iconic Disney movies like "Goofy Friday," a take on  Freaky Friday , and "High School Goofical 3: Senior Year," which is a riff on the  High School Musical franchise film. As guests get closer to the pre-show of the attraction, there is a concession stand with fun nods to Disney characters, like Powerline-themed candy called Power Limes, and popcorn that's in the shape of Mickey and Minnie Mouse, as well as Donald Duck.

After riding on Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway, families can enjoy some downtime in a new grassy area located near the attraction. This is a nice shady spot for munching on snacks or letting kids get some energy out by running around with other children.

The rest of Mickey’s Toontown will reopen on March 8, 2023. The reimagined space will be a great area of the park will be a great spot for families with younger kids to play together. One major addition will be CenTOONial Park, where there will be two interactive play experiences, one of which is a water table for a sensory experience and the other is the dreaming tree where kids can crawl and explore.

Near Goofy’s home is Goofy’s How-To-Play Yard, where there’s a sound garden and a new clubhouse. Inside Goofy’s house, there’s an interactive confectionary machine that looks like something out of a cartoon. And just outside is Donald Duck’s Boat, where children can run around and get some energy out in an all-new splash pad area.

When Toontown reopens, there will be two new eateries: Cafe Daisy, which will serve diner classics at a sidewalk table eatery, and a grab-and-go stand called the Toontown Farmers Market at Good Boy! Grocers. Though not much is known about it yet, there will also be a new family-friendly attraction called Chip ‘n’ Dale’s GADGETcoaster inside the land. Of course, you’ll still be able to meet Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse inside their homes after a quick tour. And Disney fans will be glad to know that Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin will also be reopening.

New nighttime entertainment

Ending the night with fireworks is one of our favorite ways to enjoy a few final moments at Disneyland, and two new nighttime spectaculars are set to light up the sky. When Disney100 kicks off, so will a new nighttime spectacular called “Wondrous Journeys.” The show will feature nods to every Walt Disney Animation Studios film to date, and a heartwarming new song, “ It’s Wondrous .”

Guests will see Baymax from  Big Hero 6 and the Blue Fairy from  Pinocchio  fly across the sky above Sleeping Beauty Castle during the show.

Along with the new theme song and flying characters, the show will feature new renditions of popular Disney songs from the movies that are featured in the show. "We found 16 songs to tell our story that are woven throughout the show," says Tricia Holloway, global head of music for Walt Disney Imagineering. The songs use newly recorded vocals just for the show, and a large orchestra of over 80 musicians to enhance the already popular lyrics for "Wondrous Journeys."

No matter where guests stand around Main Street, U.S.A., Sleeping Beauty Castle—at the facade of “it’s a small world,” or the Rivers of America—they will be surrounded by state-of-the-art projection effects that bring famous Disney characters to life.

"Every time you come, you can see something different depending on where you're standing, so it's really one of those shows that you want to come back and see again and again to find that thing that you saw on one place that you didn't see on another," says Holloway. According to Walt Disney Imagineering, the storyline and the music is the same no matter where you watch the show, but what is projected on the facades of buildings is different.

"From day one, we were able to plan for all four of those projection areas, which made it more complicated, but also gave us the opportunity to say 'We don't have to get all 61 movies on the castle because we also have Main Street, we also have ["it's a small world"]," says Roger Gould, creative director, Walt Disney Animation Studios. "I would say if you really just want to lean into the story "it's a small world" is fantastic, and Rivers of America is also beautiful and [has] the best audio."

Most nights the show will just be projections and music, but on select nights (mostly weekends) the show will also include fireworks.

Across the Esplanade at Disney California Adventure, “World of Color—One” will highlight the storytelling legacy of Walt Disney. The show will tell an entirely new story that will show off courageous and inspiring Disney characters, with the show’s concept art displaying characters like Mirabel from  Encanto , Mufasa and Simba from  The Lion King , and Miguel from  Coco . With the new show comes a new original song, “Start a Wave.”

What's most impressive about World of Color—One is the soundscape that literally puts viewers in the middle of the action. "We can send any sound to any speaker in our entire rig, which is in 5.1 surround [sound]," says KC Wilderson, principal media designer. During a scene featuring Mulan, there is a thunderous noise that sweeps across the viewing area for the show, which goes along with the avalanche scene from the film, allowing guests to feel the intensity of the moment. "There are all of these different audio 'Easter eggs' depending on where you are watching the show," he explains.

Starting February 24, the daytime parade, “Magic Happens,” will glide down Main Street, U.S.A. again. The parade was only shown for a few days before Disneyland closed due to the pandemic, so guests are clamoring to see the parade again. Of course, no celebration is complete without new party outfits. When Disney100 launches, Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, and all their pals will don new platinum-inspired costumes.

During Disney100, the castle is getting some shimmering decor featuring the three Good Fairies and their pixie dust from  Sleeping Beauty . The castle will also be adorned with platinum banners and bunting. On either side of the castle moat, there will be fountains, and at the very top of the center spire, there will be a golden wishing star. Guests will also find the new platinum decor throughout the resort, including the Downtown Disney District and the three Disneyland hotels.

Around the Disneyland Resort, visitors will also have the opportunity to try some new food and beverage offerings, many of which feature the purple and platinum color scheme of the entire celebration. Fans of the cream cheese-filled pretzels can find an upgraded version, the violet pretzel, at Refreshment Corner at Disneyland Park. The stuffed pretzel is drizzled with salted vanilla cream and lavender sugar. Another sweet treat not to miss is the lemon tea cake, which is available at multiple locations around Disneyland and Disney California Adventure. The tea cake is a nod to Walt Disney, as it was one of his favorite desserts to enjoy.

No Disney celebration would be complete without collectible souvenir cups and popcorn buckets. For Disney100, there are a few options, the cutest of which is a Mickey Mouse sipper, which looks just like the iconic mouse in his new purple and platinum Disney100 outfit.

Those who want to take a piece of the celebration home with them can find Disney100 merchandise throughout the resort. The Disney100 collection features apparel, home goods, toys, and more. Kids will love the plush Mickey and Minnie Mouse toys, where the characters are wearing their new Disney100 ensembles. Ear hats and headbands are also available, and feature sparkling platinum ears. One of the most exciting collections is Disney100 The Eras Collection, which is debuting in three parts: Walt Disney Studios, Disneyland, and a yet-to-be-announced collection. The Walt Disney Studios and Disneyland collections feature mugs, pins, sweatshirts, and more, celebrating the legacy of the iconic company.

10 Unforgettable Moments on the Celebrating Disney100 Tour

by Trisha Daab | Oct 13, 2023 | Disneyland , Disneyland Parks

We’re sharing ten unforgettable moments from the limited-time Celebrating Disney100 Tour at Disneyland Resort.

At the end of September, during my first-ever trip to Disneyland, I went on the Celebrating Disney100 Guided Tour. The limited-time tour is two hours at Disneyland Resort, taking guests on a journey through the parks as they discover fascinating stories about The Walt Disney Company from the past and present.

What is the Celebrating Disney100 Tour?

The guided tour includes walking through Disneyland and Disney California Adventure, with tours of Buena Vista Street, Animation Academy, Main Street Opera House, Tomorrowland, Fantasyland, and Sleeping Beauty Castle. You’ll also get to take part in a unique drawing experience at Animation Academy, reserved viewing for the Magic Happens Parade , a Disney100 Celebration treat, and a Disney100 commemorative pin. This tour was only available for a limited time in celebration of the Walt Disney Company’s 100th anniversary, available for $110 per person (ages 3 and up).

10 Unforgettable Moments from the Celebrating Disney100 Tour

This was my 20th visit to Disney parks but like any Disney trip, was full of firsts: my first time at the Disneyland Resort, my first Halloween party, and my first Disney tour. After doing both the Disney100 Tour and Walt’s Main Street Story Tour, I’m officially a tour enthusiast and can’t wait to do one on my next Disney parks trip. These are 10 of the unforgettable moments on the Celebrating Disney100 Tour Guided Tour.

1. The Walt Disney Company History Brought to Life

Over the 120 minutes, we walked the full history of Disney from animation at Disney California Adventure to Walt’s dream for Disneyland. My FitBit was happy with me for once because of all the steps from our start in Disneyland on Main Street, then to Disney California Adventure and along Buena Vista Street, over to Animation Academy (more on that later), and then back to Disneyland to go down Main Street and end at the Partners Statue.

Thank goodness my friend Jamie, who researched and scheduled the tour for us, also made sure we had a Disney breakfast of champions – popcorn and a cookie! As a Disneyland Resort newbie, this was an incredible introduction to both parks. Main Street, U.S.A. is modeled after Marceline Missouri from Walt’s childhood, but what was fascinating to learn was Walt’s history with animation that is sprinkled throughout Buena Vista Street and Hollywood Lane at Disney California Adventure.

Like Elias & Co, named after Walt’s Dad. Carthay Circle is another homage, named and modeled after the theater that held the premiere of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Disney’s first animated full-length feature film.

2. Audio Clips of Walt

Does anyone else get emotional when hearing Walt’s voice? The creators of this tour were definitely going for all the feels with the sprinkling of Walt audio clips throughout the tour.

The one that really got me was the clip of Walt that played while we walked into Disneyland and passed under the sign with the quote “Here you leave today and enter the world of yesterday, tomorrow and fantasy.”

3. Fun Stories About Walt and Lillian Disney

A unique part of this tour is Cast Members were able to give input into its creation. Cast Members are often the biggest Disney fans and would love to know how many of the fun stories sprinkled throughout the tour came from them. I’d heard the stories of all that went wrong on the opening day of Disneyland and its nickname Black Sunday. On the tour, I also learned that workers accidentally painted Walt into his apartment prior to opening.

As a Lillian Disney fan, I enjoyed hearing tidbits about her. In the Disney100 exhibit area on Main Street, our tour guide Amanda shared a fun story about Lillian. She was hesitant about Walt picking out a dog for her because she said Walt didn’t always have the best taste. The dog Walt picked out went on to be a much-loved pet by Lillian and the inspiration for Lady and the Tramp.

4. Moving Moment with Roy Disney

Another all-the-feels moment was when an audio clip from Roy Disney’s opening day speech at Walt Disney World’s grand opening at Magic Kingdom played. This is when we hit the point in the story that Walt had passed away. It was now up to Roy, the Imagineers, and even Walt’s family to continue his legacy and work on what had been started in Florida.

In the walking portions, we were treated to soundtracks of old Disney park shows. That way we could hear when our tour guide warned us repeatedly to be careful crossing the trolley tracks. The trolley, I consistently walked in front of. At Disney World, there are way fewer vehicles and the obstacle is dodging people abruptly stopping to take pictures of the castle.

5. Closing Question

The guided portion of the tour ended near the Partners Statue, right in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle. We were once again treated to an audio clip of Walt. Part of the clip included a quote I hadn’t heard before “It seems to me, we have a lot of story left to tell.” Then our tour guide closed with, “What stories will you tell?” Weeks later and I still get all the feels from that one.

6. Animation Academy Magic

During the Disney California Adventure portion of the tour, we visited the Animation Academy. Our entrance was backstage, across from the Hyperion Theatre which featured a long hallway with drawings of classic characters including Jiminy Cricket, Tinker Bell, and Alice.

We were then treated to an empty Animation Academy and a presentation from our animator on hundreds of years of Disney animation. All before they let in additional guests from the regular attraction line. Our animator chose for us to draw Dumbo. I’ll be honest, I was not excited about this portion of the tour. My crafty friend Jamie who even went to art school was stoked. I was nervous.

My kids will tell ya, that drawing is not my strength. My stick figures even look off. But imagine my surprise when my Dumbo actually started to look like something! Our animator regaled us with fun stories about the making of Dumbo and how much audiences loved seeing this film during some of the darkest days of World War II.

Next thing I knew we were told to put the finishing touches on Dumbo and to make sure we signed our drawings. For the first time in my adult life, I proudly signed my name to something I drew! Since this was in the middle of the tour, the drawings were gathered up and held for safekeeping until we went to the designated viewing area for the parade a few hours later.

7. All About the Pins

We walked away from this tour with not one, but two pins. The first had our names with the Disney100 Tour logo. The pin-collecting folks got really excited about the special tour pin featuring Mickey Mouse and the Disney100 logo.

This pin is so big it needs two backs. It was definitely not going on the backpack.

8. Special Photo Shoot

After receiving our pins, and before being free to wander the park for a few hours, it was Disney PhotoPass time. Disney PhotoPass photographers are some of my favorite Cast Members! It is a VERY tough job and they do it with a smile.

This photographer was no exception. She loved Jamie’s Disney100 ears and took one of my favorite photos of the entire trip.

9. Parade Viewing

A few hours after our tour finished we got what Jamie came for, and had a special viewing area for the Magic Happens parade. This was the first time either of us had seen this parade. It’s come and gone since its opening in February 2020. This was unlike the parades I’ve seen at Disney World.

This parade had a style and soundtrack with a song that felt more mainstream. The choreography was less big smiles and childlike and more edgy. This clip of Princess Tiana and Prince Naveen shows off the different styles of Disney parade dance moves.

10. Celebrate with Sweets

A celebration at Disney is not complete without some sort of sugar. Enter the Disney100 Tour giant cookie. It’s chocolate brownie flavored and adorned with a Mickey, a thick coat of frosting, and celebratory star sprinkles. Between the heavyweight cookie and the commemorative pin, I am so glad we rented a locker!

The Disney100 Tour delivered on its promise of experiencing “Disneyland as a living story.” Love commemorative pins, pics and cookies. But, for me the highlight was drawing Dumbo while being regaled with stories and the rare and moving audio clips of Walt, perfectly placed to tell the story of the magic he created that lives on today.

This tour is specific to the 100 years of Disney, so make sure to book so you don't miss out! It's a two hour guided tour for $110, which is amazing considering you not just get a VIP tour guide for two hours, but you also get a name badge keepsake, a 100 year pin keepsake, a tour specific sweet treat, an animation studio drawing, a picture in front of the castle, and my favorite part - a reserved section to view the spectacular Magic Happens Parade! At check in, you will receive a name badge with your name on it to wear so they know you are part of the tour. Additionally, you will receive a ear piece and device to make it easy to hear your tour guide as you make your way through both parks! This tour is wheelchair accessible, and they were very accommodating! Also, there's fun to be had when you enter each park. Don't want to ruin the magic, but it definitely made the tour fun! To start the tour, you will actually head on over to Disney California Adventure to hear all about Buena Vista Street which was a first for me and fascinating to hear what inspired Walt in the designs! Then you will make your way to the Animation Studio for your class in the dedicated two rows with an opportunity to ask the animator any questions you have before they let everyone else in. It was fun for first timers and even veterans like myself to draw a Disney 100 specific character who has not been drawn before! We don't talk about who we drew on my tour.Great souvenir that the cast member held on to, so you don't have to carry for the remainder of the tour! Once you have drawn your masterpiece (well, let's hope so anyway), you will head on back to Disneyland to do a tour of Main Street for some fun facts while you make it to the castle. At the castle, you will have a photo taken by a PhotoPass professional so make sure to have your magic band ready for easy scanning for the photos! Have as much fun as you'd like, I know Grogu enjoyed the tour with me. At this point, your VIP tour guide will pass out the tour pin and remind you to make your way to the parade later. When you arrive for the Magic Happens Parade, you will provide your name they check off the list. You will get the tour themed sweet treat and find a seat on the curb or the one small bench area. My visit was a little hot, so they actually offered Disneyland fans - felt like the moms you see in the 1960s with the Disneyland fans! What's amazing with the reserved section is there are PhotoPass photographers who come specifically over to take another photo! Also, the characters and even the Disneyland band came over to entertain. You truly felt like a VIP on this VIP guided tour. If you had to choose between this tour and Walt's Main Street Story, I would say why not both? Be rude not to! Truly an amazing tour and hope many others get to experience the magic of Disney and the beauty created in the last 100 years!

Décor that Brings You into the Story

Beautiful décor in platinum and purple immerses you in a celebratory atmosphere throughout the Disneyland ® Resort. From lighting and floral plantings to banners and bunting, everything you see says, “Let’s celebrate!”

A gleaming platinum statue of Mickey Mouse in Town Square on Main Street, U.S.A. ® makes a perfect photo opportunity. And you can find another platinum Mickey statue in Downtown Disney® District, as well as a platinum Minnie Mouse statue in front of the Plaza Inn.

Sleeping Beauty Castle is decked out with banners, bunting, a large shield, three-dimensional sculptures of the good fairies, a three-dimensional Wishing Star and two majestic fountains in the moat. Another great photo opportunity!

Surprises to Explore

As you’d expect, Disney storytelling is celebrated in a variety of special events, including:

•The new World of Color – ONE at Disney California Adventure ® Park brings some of the most inspiring Disney Characters to life in new ways.

• Wondrous Journeys , a new nighttime spectacular at Disneyland ® Park, gives a nod to all 62 Walt Disney Animation Studios films with state-of-the-art projection effects on Main Street, U.S.A. ®, Sleeping Beauty Castle, the façade of “it’s a small world” and the water screens of Rivers of America. Dazzling fireworks take the show to new heights on select nights.

• And don’t miss the beloved Magic Happens parade , which is now showing.

• Enjoy specialty Disney100-inspired treats and beverages.

Keepsakes from a Special Time

For such an important moment in Disney’s history, you’ll want to commemorate your visit with keepsakes from unique collections of merchandise designed especially for the Disney100 Celebration. The collections include:

Enjoy a Brand New Story in a Reimagined Mickey’s Toontown

Mickey’s Toontown is re-opening this March for non-stop fun. Be sure to climb aboard Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway at the El CapiTOON Theater as part of the Disney100 Celebration. Guests can join Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and their pals on a joyful adventure. The all-ages adventure brings to life the cartoon world featuring Mickey Mouse and his friends, plus action, adventure, humor and a big finish.

Then, check out the open, grassy play spaces for everyone to relax in, starting with CenTOONial Park! There you’ll find two interactive experiences: a fountain with water tables and a dreaming tree where kids can crawl and explore.

Over in Goofy’s How-to-Play Yard, you’ll be treated to a whimsical sound garden where little ones can discover new ways to make wacky noises, plus a new clubhouse. Venture to Goofy’s House to enjoy an interactive candy-making contraption only Goofy could imagine! Junior candymakers will help Goofy make the candy.

The fun continues with more must-see experiences, such as Donald’s Boat, where kids can get the wiggles out and make a splash with larger-than-life spinning water lilies, balance beams and rocking toys.

Feel like dropping by to see friends? At Mickey’s House and Minnie’s House, you can enjoy a self-guided tour as you check out surprises waiting for you in every room. And, if you time your visit right, Mickey and Minnie may just be home for a quick “hello.”

And if all the fun makes you a tad hungry, there are two new options to curb appetites big and small! There’s Cafe Daisy, named after Daisy Duck, where you can get down-home diner classics at her sidewalk table restaurant; and the Toontown Farmers Market at Good Boy! Grocers, a friendly roadside stand, offering grab-and-go drinks and treats.

We hope you enjoy your visit during this spectacular event, celebrating 100 years of creativity, imagination and joy!

Pixar Fest 2024: The Ultimate Guide to the Disneyland Celebration of Toy Story, Coco, Turning Red, and More

P ixar Fest 2024 has officially begun at Disneyland Resort and brings with it a ton of ways to celebrate your favorite Pixar stories, from the first Toy Story all the way up to Elemental. This includes themed food, drinks, and merch, a new parade and revamped nighttime spectacular, first-time appearances by fan-favorite characters, and so much more.

Disney flew me out to preview all the fun Pixar Fest has in store for fans while it runs from April 26 - August 4, and I'm here to break down everything you need to know about the celebration and all the best food, merch, entertainment, and so much more.

There's a lot to cover in this guide, and we're making it a bit easier to get to the exact section you'd like to visit by clicking any of the links below! We also encourage you to check out my Pixar Fest Food and Treat Guide and Pixar Fest Merch and Popcorn Bucket Guide to dive deep into the best options at the Disneyland event!

Pixar Fest 2024: Celebrating Friendship and Beyond

Just keep eating, just keep eating, my name is dug (the popcorn bucket) and i love you (and merch), better together: a pixar pals celebration, together forever – a pixar nighttime spectacular, pixar pals playtime party and club pixar.

Disneyland's first Pixar Fest took place in 2018 and it hasn't returned until this year. To learn why now was the perfect time for Pixar Fest's second run, Tasha Sounart, a creative director in Pixar's theme park group, shared with us a bit of the inspiration behind the coolest Pixar party in town.

"We want the feelings and the emotions that you've connected with these characters from the films to be carried forward in the parks in many different ways. We thought this was a really great time to bring back Pixar Fest because it's been a while and we've come out with a lot of films since then. Luca, Turning Red, Soul, and others have a lot of fun stuff in them that hasn't really been seen in the parks before, so this is an opportunity to celebrate some of those new films."

Alongside the films Sounart mentioned, Pixar also released Onward, Elemental, and Lightyear, and Pixar Fest 2024 is a chance to experience those stories in a whole new way at both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure.

We also have to mention that Pixar is gearing up to release Inside Out 2 on June 14, 2024, and Pixar Fest is laying the foundation for some potential fun to come from our favorite emotions. While there isn't much Inside Out 2 quite yet since the film hasn't been released yet, that doesn't mean their aren't some surprises in store for eagle-eyes guests.

"We've got a new film coming out in June called Inside Out 2 and we obviously wanted to bring back Riley and Sadness and some of our favorite characters from Inside Out 1. And yeah, there is actually a very small cameo of Inside Out 2 in the fireworks show at the end if you keep an eye out."

All in all, Sounart shared that Pixar Fest has the "theme of togetherness and friendship," and that has spread across all the festivities at Disneyland Resort.

"I always think of coming to the park with my family or friends," Sounart said. "And so for me that's what is so meaningful about Pixar Fest is that sense of togetherness and that sense of appreciating your friends and family and having fun together, and so that is what I'm most excited about."

Without a doubt, one of the biggest selling points for Disney Parks' special events is the limited-time themed food and drinks that you can't get anywhere else. Furthermore, a lot of these offerings aren't just delicious treats to enjoy, but they also tell a story and become an extension of the films we all love so much.

Pixar Fest is no exception and there's quite a few options that I got to try that I highly, highly recommend you make the time to try if you can get yourself to Disneyland. You can check out my full thoughts on the items I got to try and see in person in my Best Food at Pixar Fest 2024 Guide and in the slideshow below, but I wanted to share a few top level thoughts with you below for some of my favorites.

My two favorite items I had the chance to check out were actually two items I wasn't able to try, but you better believe I will be doing my best to get back to Disneyland before August 4 to find them! First up are the Nemo and Baby Dory cake pops. I mean, just look at the images above to understand why I fell in love with this immediately. They are SO cute and have such a great attention to detail, including Nemo's lucky fin and the big eyes of baby Dory.

The second is The Marigold Bridge, which is inspired by Coco and literally took my breath away. This cupcake, which is a tri-colored one with cinnamon mousse, cream cheese frosting, and a chocolate bridge with orange chocolate shavings, looks just like the bridge from Coco that let the dead journey back to the land of the living to be with their loved ones. Even though I didn't get to taste it, this is one of the most beautiful pieces of food I've ever seen. It's not often food can make you truly emotional, but that's what happened here and the power of these stories and the incredible artists at work.

From what I got to try, I think my favorite might just be the 'Smoked Fire Wood' BBQ-Spiced Impossible Chicken, which is inspired by Elemental. This delicious not-chicken patty was so crispy and was topped with a delicious hot mustard sauce, some pickles with a perfect bite, and charred onions. The flavors just came together so well and I would never have been able to tell this wasn't chicken, it was that good.

I also have to recommend that Ratatouille Pizzetta and Gusteau Macaron from Gusteau's To-Go at Disney California Adventure Park's Pixar Fest Marketplace that will be open from May 10 - August 4. The pizzetta is a perfectly small-sized pizza with an arrangement of Ratatouille (eggplant, squash, and zucchini) on the front and a wedge of French Camembert cheese that just added a whole other level of flavor. And the macaron is just SO GOOD in the taste and looks department. From the Gusteau To-Go logo to the crème brûlée cream and caramel center, it is just a delight.

FYI, The Pixar Fest Marketplace will be a joy to visit as there are also stalls dedicated to Turning Red, Luca, Elemental (the Impossible Chicken will be there!), Soul, and more! However, it doesn't open until May 10, so keep that in mind!

Once again, check out all of my thoughts right here on the best food at Pixar Fest 2024 and let me know below what your favorites are!

We all love food with all our hearts, but there is a part of us that craves merch just as much, if not more! Lucky for us but unlucky for our wallets, Pixar Fest 2024 is filled to the brim with some fun, colorful, and unique items that all celebrate everything Pixar and should please that merch monster within us all. Oh, and there are some popcorn buckets that, while maybe not as shocking, can rival those of Dune 2 and whatever ridiculousness Deadpool & Wolverine will undoubtedly throw our way.

I had the chance to speak to Disney’s Carlos Martinez about Pixar Fest 2024’s merch and what inspired its striking, comic book-style designs, and it was all in an effort to blend together the different looks of all the Pixar films.

“The coolest thing for Pixar Fest 2024 is that there are 15 unique items that all celebrate the ‘friendship and beyond’ idea and what we love about Pixar. For me, I love the fact that everything has that comic book style, which is very unique, and it bonds all the characters together from across the different stories. After all, it's not very common that you get to see Woody and Miguel together in a store with Mei and Lightning McQueen. This comic book style gives us that opportunity to be able to celebrate all the stories in one, unified way.

“Also, there is a versatility of having items that are gender inclusive, so it's not a male or female thing. There's sizing for young and old, big and small, and it's a just great opportunity to be able to just showcase your love for Pixar no matter who you are.”

A big question on everyone’s mind once again was Inside Out 2, especially considering it is set to be released in theaters on June 14. While only the first Inside Out will be part of Pixar Fest 2024's merch offerings at the start, you never know what surprises are in store down the road.

“You'll have to come out and see,” Martinez said when asked about Inside Out 2 at Pixar Fest. “You'll have to wait, because you never know what's going to happen here at the Disneyland Resort. As we learned from the original Pixar Fest, there's fun and excitement at every corner.”

Now, before we get to some of the awesome Pixar Fest 2024 merchandise fans can look out for, we have to talk about the popcorn buckets. Special popcorn buckets have long been a big part of Disney Parks but the popularity has skyrocketed with the likes of Dune 2’s shocking bucket that took the internet by storm. While not as wild, Pixar Fest will have some popcorn buckets that will make you the envy of all your friends.

First up is the Pizza Planet Truck Popcorn Bucket, which lights up and comes complete with a Toy Story Alien that is dressed up in his best Pizza Planet attire. As if that wasn’t enough, you can take the Alien out and you’ve got yourself a new figure to play with!

And speaking of Pizza Planet Trucks, there are 50 unique Pizza Planet trucks hidden around both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure for guests to find, including a Guardians of the Galaxy one and a Mad Max-esque truck that is driven by none other than Grogu himself. I won’t spoil where those are for you, but make sure to keep your eye out for them!

Now, as for the rest of the merch, one of the highlights include a Pixar Fest Spirit Jersey that features Woody, Mei, Miguel, Lightning McQueen, Sulley, Joy, Sadness, Anger, and more. This was flying off the shelves when I visited the parks on the first day of Pixar Fest and is likely to be a popular one.

Fans can also discover a bucket hat that is reversible and gives you two ways to wear your love for Pixar, one blue side with a bunch of Luxo Balls and another that yellow and blue and a bit more minimalist. There is also mugs, water bottles, bags, sweatshirts, zip-up hoodies, and more sporting that unified comic book artstyle of these characters.

Next, I want to highlight the Pixar Lug bag, which is a first for Disneyland Resort. It’s meant to be the perfect size for all your essentials, whether it be your phone, charger, external battery, snacks, sunscreen, etc., and not any more. And you can wear it across your body as a satchel, as a small backpack, or even as a fanny pack. The goal of this bag is to provide guests with a smaller way to carry with them what they need and avoiding bigger, heavier bags. Oh, and it has a see-through slot for your ID!

Lastly, Pixar Fest 2024 is bringing more than just Pixar characters to the festivities as there is a brand new, customizable headband that is now available that are basically a new sort-of Mickey Ear variation. You will be able to purchase the heads of different characters and place them on the headband in any way you like, whether that be in a way mimicking Mickey Ears or putting three or four at a time because you love them so much.

This new product is all about making the perfect headband that represents you, and the collection will continue to grow as time goes on. At launch, it now includes such characters as Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Chip, Dale, Daisy, the Toy Story Alien, Lotso, Buzz, Stitch, Winnie, and Tigger.

Better Together: A Pixar Pals Celebration is Pixar Fest 2024's brand-new parade that not only features such iconic characters as Woody, Buzz, and Mr. and Mrs. Incredible, but, for the first time, characters from Turning Red, Luca, and Soul!

This new parade runs twice a day from April 26 - August 4 at Disney California Adventure and, all in all, stars over 24 characters from 10 Pixar films to "celebrate friendship and beyond." There has never been more Pixar characters on display in any Disney Park and, in total, there will be almost 70 performers when you factor in the (excellent!) dancers that surround each of the eight floats.

To learn more about the parade, we heard from Robin Trowbridge, show director at Disney Live Entertainment, and he shared what we can expect and how it differs from the Pixar Play Parade back in 2018.

"We wanted to go into this parade with a message," Trowbridge said. "And the messages from the stories that we helped bring to life were basic. They were like, the truth about life is that friendship matters. And that friendship is a great thing. And that when we have friends, we are better together.

"We've learned from our Pixar Pals that friends will accept us or help lift us up no matter what we're going through, no matter what stages we are in life and we love that message. And so Better Together: a Pixar Pal Celebration is literally an invitation to celebrate friendship and beyond."

As for the floats themselves, the iconic Pixar lamp kicks off the parade, and that one is just ahead of a Turning Red one that stars Mei in her giant red panda form for the first time at a domestic Disney Park. 4*TOWN and Mei's father and friends are also dancing along on the float.

Next up is the Up float, and running all around it is Russell on Kevin's back and they look so great. The costume makes it look like it was pulled straight from the film and Kevin's feathers shine with brilliant colors in the light. Carl is on the float itself with his house and balloons behind him, and Dug is on the back and, yes, he loves you very much!

The Soul float grooves on by next and sees Joe Gardner and his students having a big jazz jam session to celebrate 'Mr. G.' In a nice touch, the music notes you see on the float make up the actually musical track for the song that the class is performing.

Joy and Sadness headline the Inside Out float and they are riding atop Riley's Rocket Wagon and a bunch of her memories. We clearly all haven't forgotten about our dear, sweet Bing-Bong so he is there with a big smile on his face.

Luca, Alberto, and Giulia follow and they are on a float that looks like it was taken right from Portorosso. Luca and Alberto are in what looks like water and you can see their blue-green scales and fins when they move, but they are in their human form when they lift their legs above the "water." Giulia is riding her Vespa above them.

The finale brings in the heavy hitters as we first see Mr. and Mrs. Incredible and Frozone drive by on their hovercraft vehicles. Then a big float with Sulley and Mike Wazowski, Buzz Lightyear and Jessie, and Miguel and Dante zooms by right before Woody rides his toy truck by to say goodbye.

Trowbridge then had one more great story to share with us about the parade, one that shows the power of the little things.

"In an effort to reach out to all of our guests, in the effort to communicate out our message, you'll see in our choreography at the end of the parade that we are signing 'better together,'" Trowbridge said. "It is literally the last statement we make at the gate when we close, that we do better together and then we wave goodbye. So that's just kind of a nice little thing that we dropped in there to help reach out."

While the Better Together: A Pixar Pals Celebration parade is a brand-new show, Together Forever - A Pixar Nighttime Spectacular is actually an upgraded version of the show guests enjoyed during 2018's Pixar Fest, but now with the inclusion of Turning Red, Soul, Elemental, Luca, and Onward.

Alongside fan-favorite returning elements like Buzz Lightyear and Carl and Ellie's house from Up soaring above the castle and the 59 Pixar character that were part of the original, this show will have "enhancements" like new pyrotechnics, Magic Band+ integration, and 17 new characters. There will also be a new Walkout/post-show that will keep that party going on Main Street, USA, and other locations around Disneyland with songs like an instrumental version of Turning Red's Nobody Like You.

KC Wilkerson, principal media designer for Disney Live Entertainment at Disneyland and show director for Together Forever, walked us through the inspiration behind this new Nighttime Spectacular that's filled with fireworks, projections, and more.

"Originally, the idea was that we were just going to add the new characters to the old show," Wilkerson said. "The more we dove into it, however, the more we decided that we really needed to do something a little bit different. So, we decided to sort of break the show apart in little ways and add in the new characters to our appropriate chapters because remember, Together Forever is a story.

"It's about meeting new friends. It's about taking those friends and setting out on adventures. And it's about overcoming adversity together, which helps form everlasting bonds. We wanted to choose moments from the newer films that really reflected the overall story that we were trying to tell. And we also realized that, since 2018, we have improved on the technological side. So we we added new projectors to a number of our locations. And those projectors provide us with greater detail, greater clarity, and much richer colors. And I don't know about you guys, but what I think of when I think of Pixar is color, and the opportunity to render Pixar colors effectively on all of these incredible projection surfaces was a tremendous challenge. But I think when you see pictures and video of the show and hopefully see it in real life, then you can see that the show really delivers."

And deliver it does, from everything mentioned above to Mei running down Main Street and transforming from her panda self into her human form via new, custom Pixar animation to the dead from Coco appearing above the buildings in a memorable moment to the colors of films like Elemental being represented in the fireworks. It really is the ultimate celebration of all things Pixar.

Oh, and be sure to look out for the six Hidden Mickeys throughout the projections as well as a glimpse of some of the new emotions you'll be able to catch in Inside Out 2.

There are so many more ways for families to enjoy the fun of Pixar Fest 2024, and two more highlights are the Pixar Pals Playtime Party and Club Pixar.

Pixar Pals Playtime Party takes place at Fantasyland Theatre in Disneyland and the area has been transformed into a literal Pixar play area that is filled with Pixar characters like Elemental's Wade and Ember, Luca and Alberto from Luca, Mr. and Mrs. Incredible in their retro super suits for the first time alongside Edna and Frozone, Inside Out's Joy and Sadness, Ian and Barley from Onward, and even Russell and Dug from Up.

"We really transformed that whole space to an immersive location," Disney Live Entertainment creative director Tracy Halas told us. "You get to join some of the characters for a dance party and even learn some their dances. There are great oversized photo locations where you can meet some of the our Pixar Pals. There are locations for crafts and for creating a very fun time with family. There's specialty foods and so much more to experience, so this is really a can't-miss location at Disneyland Park."

While the Pixar Pals Playtime Party is a fun activity to do during the day, Club Pixar becomes the hot spot in the afternoon and evening as it keeps the Pixar fun going at the Hollywood Backlot at Disney California Adventure. This DJ-led experience features live performances, Pixar-themed games, photo ops, themed food and beverages, and much more.

One of the cooler aspects of Club Pixar is The Shorts Stop Drive-In Theater, where guests can sit in chairs modeled after old-time cars and watch a continuous loop of Pixar Shorts. It's a great place to relax and just take in all the joy of Pixar, and the games are on either side of it to keep the kids busy as well, including fishing, ball toss, and more.

"Club Pixar is the hottest club in town and is made for guests of all ages," Halas said. "One of my favorite parts is how you can learn some dances from the stage show, including a little Monsters U pep rally cheer and some fun from 4*Town. We've also taken some scenes like from Wall-E and from Up and share a little bit of the films before transitioning into an interactive interpretive dance moment where these great dancers come out and take that story and finish telling it through the world of dance. This is one of my favorite things. I'm not supposed to have favorites, but I do. I love how these transitions bring the emotion and heart to what these stories represent."

This part also really captured my heart, especially during the Inside Out segment. Each emotion got a chance to shine, and words and colors played on the screen behind the dancers that represented what those emotions make us feel. It was a very special dance that fit so well into the theme of Pixar.

And with that, there is everything you need to know about Pixar Fest 2024 at Disneyland! As we previously mentioned, there should be more to enjoy from now until August 4, and we'll be updating this guide with any major developments, including any related to Inside Out 2!

Until then, be sure to let us know what you are most excited for at Pixar Fest 2024 and what your favorite things are when you get to go!

California Disney characters are unionizing decades after Florida peers. Hollywood plays a role

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — During three years of working as a parade performer at the Disneyland Resort in Southern California , Zach Elefante always has had a second or third job to help him earn a living.

Unlike the experiences of his peers at Disney’s parks in Orlando, Florida, where there is a much smaller talent pool, the performers who play Mickey Mouse, Goofy and other beloved Disney characters at the California parks aren’t always provided a consistent work schedule by the company.

It’s among the reasons the California performers are organizing to be represented by a union now, more than four decades after their Florida counterparts did so.

While Disney asks character performers to be available to work at any time, that demand isn’t always rewarded with scheduled work hours, the California performers said.

“A lot of performers get the sense that if they don’t give their full availability, we won’t be in shows … and that will impact other jobs we need to sustain a living in this area,” said Elefante, who lives in Santa Ana, California.

Earlier this month, the California character performers and the union organizing them, Actors’ Equity Association, said they had filed a petition for union recognition.

It’s a different era and a different union doing the organizing this time around, so the California character and parade performers likely will avoid some of the bad blood that the Disney performers in Florida have experienced with their union, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.

It has been a rocky four-decade marriage in Florida between the performers who put the “magic” in the Magic Kingdom and the Teamsters, a union historically formed for transportation and warehouse workers which had deep ties to organized crime until the late 1980s.

Why now for the California character performers, so many decades after their Florida counterparts organized? Unlike in Florida where performing as a character often is a full-time job, many of the character performers in Southern California have multiple other gigs, often in Hollywood movies and TV.

Elefante performs at rival Universal Studios Hollywood and works as a tour guide for the movie studios. In addition to performing in the “Fantasmic!” show at Disneyland, Chase Thomas works as the director of operations for a theater festival and previously has had jobs as a visual effects coordinator and entertainment licensing agent.

Angela Nichols moved to California to be a TV writer and often works as a writer in addition to her job as an entertainment host at Disneyland, where she assists the character performers when they’re interacting with guests.

“Disney really is a cornerstone of the stories we grow up with in our culture. Being able to watch people immersed in these stories and live it out is magical,” Nichols said. “And when we’re being supported as cast members and performers, we’re able to make that happen. We’re just not being set up for success in the way we need to be at this time.”

When many of their Hollywood gigs dried up because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the recent actors’ and writers’ strikes, the character performers wanted more consistent scheduling at Disneyland once it reopened after a yearlong, pandemic-related closure. The pandemic also made them more alert to health and safety concerns concerning things like hugging guests or having sanitary costumes.

Most of the more than 35,000 workers at the Disneyland Resort in Southern California already were unionized, and the parades and character department members were among the holdovers.

“A lot of cast members want to do this fulltime and make it work,” Thomas said.

Unlike their Florida counterparts, the character performers in California are being organized by a union devoted to performers. As such, Actors’ Equity Association officials understand the unique needs of the theme park performers in ways that would be difficult for other unions to grasp.

When there is a new stage show, the shoes of the costumes need to be tested to make sure the performers won’t trip or slip on stage. Union representatives make sure “face performers,” whose faces are visible, such as Cinderella, have the right makeup and double check that parade dancers have ice packs available to nurse sore knees.

Unclean costumes are a perennial problem, and it was a top reason for the Florida performers wanting to organize with the Teamsters in the early 1980s. The other reasons included kids kicking Disney villains like Captain Hook in the shins and adults grabbing at the chests of performers playing Mickey Mouse to see if there was a man or woman underneath.

Clean costumes were so important to the Florida character performers that more than two decades ago the Teamsters succesfully inserted a contract clause to assign individual undergarments that the performers could take home to wash after pubic lice and scabies were shared via the garments.

There always existed a culture clash in Florida between the costumed character performers and the traditional Teamsters union leaders of truck drivers and warehouse workers. The drivers often viewed the performers as living charmed lives, paid to dress up every day as if it were Halloween.

Those tensions came to a head in the late 2010s as a new leader of the local Teamsters affiliate in Orlando began targeting the costumed character performers for harassment. The character performers pushed back and the fight went up to James Hoffa , then-head of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, who intervened.

In California, Elefante is hopeful union representation will give performers a voice in decisions about issues including the larger-than-life costumes, which can cause long-term injuries when ill-fitted, and the safety of performing in parades during rain.

“It’s about having a seat at the table and being a part of the conversation from the performers’ perspective,” Elefante said.

Associated Press reporter Amy Taxin in Orange County, California, contributed to this report.
