The main objective a Tour Guide needs to accomplish is to lead a group of tourists, visitors and students on a variety of tours depending on the organization they work for.

They may create their own guide or follow one provided by their company.

Tour guides use their people skills and knowledge revolving their niche in order to provide tours for cities, museums and other points of interests, such as the Empire State Building in New York City.

Some companies require their Tour Guides to make sure all registered clients are in attendance.

They will need to verify accommodation numbers as well as promote and sell tour guide passes and tickets.

They may also arrange group activities to break the ice and have the group be active participants in the group.

The salary and wages for a Tour Guide depends on the location of work, type of employer and whether they work as an independent freelance contractor.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics groups tour guides under service occupations with a national median income of approximately $23,000 per year.

Education and Training Requirements

High school.

A high school diploma is the minimum requirement to be a tour guide. Courses such as speech, communications, art, sociology, anthropology, political science, social studies, and literature often prove beneficial. Some tour guides study foreign languages and cultures as well as geography, history, and architecture.

Postsecondary Training

Some cities have professional schools that offer curricula in the travel industry. Such training may take nine to 12 months and offer job placement services. Some two- and four-year colleges offer tour guide training that lasts six to eight weeks. Community colleges may offer programs in tour escort training. Programs such as these often may be taken on a part-time basis. Classes may include history, world geography, psychology, human relations, and communication courses. Sometimes students go on field trips themselves to gain experience. Some travel agencies and tour companies offer their own training so that their tour guides may receive instruction that complements the tour packages the company offers.

Other Education or Training

The National Tour Association offers webinars, networking events, and seminars at its annual conference to help members stay up to date with industry trends.

Certification, Licensing, and Special Requirements

The National Tour Association offers the voluntary certified tour professional designation to candidates who meet education, employment, and service requirements; complete required course work; and complete a learning portfolio.

Any experience one can obtain in customer service or leading local tours will be useful. 

Successful tour guides are outgoing, friendly, patient, and confident. They must be aware of the typical travelers' needs and the kinds of questions and concerns travelers might have. As a tour guide, they should be comfortable being in charge of large groups of people and have good time-management and organizational skills. They also need to be resourceful and be able to adapt to different environments. Tour guides need to be fun-loving and know how to make others feel at ease in unfamiliar surroundings. Tour guides should enjoy working with people as much as they enjoy traveling.

How To Become a NYC Tour Guide

Before you can join the Guides Association of New York City, you must first be an actively licensed New York City guide. There are thousands of people with NYC sightseeing guide licenses - local residency is not required! How do I become a New York City tour guide? New York City requires licensing for tour guides. A guide is defined as "any person who engages in the business of guiding or directing people to any place or point of public interest or who, in connection with any sightseeing trip or tour, describes, explains or lectures concerning any place or point of public interest to any person within the city or obtains the patronage of any person for such trip" (NYC Admin Code). NYC Department of Consumer & Worker Protection (DCWP) is responsible for issuing the tour guide license ("Sightseeing Guide License") and currently requires all applicants to be at least 18 years old, pay a fee and pass a computer-based multiple-choice examination in person in Manhattan. All licenses must be renewed every 2 years and have the same validity, expiring on March 31 of even years, regardless of when the license was issued. How do I prepare for the New York City tour guide license exam? Attend our monthly membership meetings and meet GANYC Guides! Also, read and take tours! A NYC tour guide (and former GANYC member, since retired) wrote the current exam in 2003 with the purpose of confirming knowledge of local landmarks, history and points of interest of the city. The DCWP website contains a suggested study guide. Some of the topics on the exam will include: famous landmarks and their locations, various architectural styles, NYC history, museums and their collections, prominent NYC churches, sightseeing bus rules & regulations (loading & unloading, etc), popular ethnic foods found throughout the city, and more.

Passing the exam is just the first step in leading tours in this exciting, continual learning process that is our profession! It is helpful and important to take guided tours. Why do I need to be certified?

In 2015, the City of Savannah disbanded its tour guide certification test, which was formerly a requirement for conducting tours in Savannah. 

Members of the tourism community came to us, citing a need for a certification process to maintain the quality of the tour product. The TLC assembled a committee made up of experts and stakeholders including Georgia Historical Society and Armstrong State University. This committee reviewed and revamped the official tour guide manual, and devised a new test to certify tour guides. 

BECOMING CERTIFIED

If you’re looking to become certified, you’re making a great decision. The people who recommend tours to guests will look here first. We’ve created a website that makes it easy to find those guides who are certified for walking , trolley , bicycle, and carriage tours. We actively advertise and publicize this website, making certification make a good marketing decision for you and your business. When you’re ready, get started right here . Here are some of the things certification includes:

The test is based on the tour guide manual . The 100-question test may take up to 2 hours to complete and is offered at the Tourism Leadership Council office. Each person who wishes to be certified will get two attempts at the test within one calendar year for $50. Should you not pass the first two times, you may take it again at $20 for each additional attempt in the same calendar year from the first attempt. There is no limit to how many times you can take the test. 

2. Background Check

As part of the certification, you will need to provide a background check from a local law enforcement agency that has been conducted within one year of seeking certification. This generally costs anywhere from $14 to $20 and takes around 7 days to complete. We’re ensuring that your record is free from Part 1 crimes  and some felonies. We may not be able to certify you should you have Part 1 crimes or some felonies as part of your background.

After passing the test and background check, you will receive a certified tour guide badge that fulfills the city’s requirements to have a badge present during all tours. Should you work for different tour companies, you will need more badges. There will be a $5/per badge fee. Your badge will give you certification for two full years upon completion of all listed items.

APT GUIDE CERTIFICATION PROGRAM

The APT Certification written exam, based mainly on information in the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides HANDBOOK, covers the history, people, and places of importance in Philadelphia. It tests knowledge of the basic facts about the city that any guide giving solid, professional tours of both the Historic District and Center City would know.

The purpose of the exam is to certify basic competency for anyone wishing to work as a Philadelphia city tour guide.

  • Those who pass the exam will be awarded an APT Certification pin.
  • Members who pass the exam will be recognized in the APT online directory.
  • Individual test scores are not made public.
  • Those who do not pass may re-test free of charge at a later date.

The first Certification exam took place at the Christ Church Neighborhood House on April 12, 2011, and 29 examinees passed. As of March 2023, APT has certified 222 Philadelphia tour guides and 7 master guides.

  • Part I  of the exam, based mainly on the content of the Handbook, consists of 100 questions to test basic knowledge of important Philadelphia people and places. At least 60% of the exam deals with the Historic District.
  • Part II  consists of 4 visual identifications, each worth 5 points. Here the task is to identify the site or person pictured in the photograph; briefly identify its significance; and mention the persons, facts, or events associated with it.

100 questions @ 1 point apiece = 100 points

4 site identifications @ 5 points apiece = 20 points

TOTAL = 120 points

The minimal passing score is  80  out of a possible 120 points (66% correct answers).

APT Exam Sample Questions

Those interested in taking the APT Certification exam should contact the APT President to be notified of the next scheduled exam date. The test fee ($35 for members, $50 for non-members) can be paid at the APT Store webpage. APT generally hosts an exam in the spring or fall following the annual training series and also arranges other testing sessions when there is demand. Upcoming test dates will be announced here and on the Events page.

The next exam is scheduled for 9 am on Saturday, March 16, at Philly’s Gourmet Steaks , 114 Market St. (probably upstairs). Deadline to register is Thursday, March 14. Please contact APT President [email protected] if you are interested in taking the exam then. Those who paid for the exam previously and didn’t sit for it, or did sit for it and didn’t pass, do not have to pay the fee again. They do, however, need to register with the APT President. 

APT MASTER GUIDE CERTIFICATION PROGRAM

THE MASTER GUIDE PROGRAM IS CURRENTLY BEING REVAMPED. ANNOUNCEMENTS WILL BE MADE HERE WHEN THE PROGRAM IS OPEN TO NEW APPLICATIONS. 

APT currently offers a four-step APT Master Guide Certification Program. Below is an outline of the four steps, each of which should be completed before moving on to the next. The steps are designed to assess basic eligibility, professional achievements and service, mastery of subject matter, and field work ability. Those who have been guiding for a number of years may find that they’ve already accumulated the 200 points outlined in Step II. Applicants may take up to three years to complete all four steps. The entire fee for the certification is $150, spread over three $50 payments. All fees are payable on this site at the APT Store page or via check at any APT meeting.

STEP I – ELIGIBILITY

●    Applicant must be a member of the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT).

●    Applicant must agree to abide by the Tour Guide’s Code of Ethics .

●    Applicant must have achieved a grade of at least 100 out of 120 on the APT Guide Certification exam. Certified guides who did not achieve a score of 100 may retake the exam at no extra cost.

●    Applicant must have completed a minimum of 100 field hours conducting tours.

●    Applicant must have been guiding for at least 3 years.

●    Applicant must complete the APT Master Guide Program application form and pay the $50 application fee.

STEP II – PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT and SERVICE

●    The applicant must earn or have earned at least 200 points through relevant educational experiences, achievements, and/or service to the profession in the Greater Philadelphia region.

●    These points will be self-reported to the APT Master Guide panel, subject to its review and approval.

STEP III – WRITTEN EXAMINATION

●    The applicant must successfully complete a thorough written examination. This exam will assess the candidate’s mastery of tour subjects as well as an understanding of tour guiding techniques and tour organization. The exam will feature comprehensive essay questions and must be completed in three hours. It will be graded by an APT Master Guide panel.

●    The fee for the examination is $50.

STEP IV – FIELD REVIEW

●    The applicant will be reviewed on tour by at least three people who may be drawn from members of the APT Master Guide panel, APT Certified Master Guides, or industry representatives from outside APT.

●    This field review will be scheduled in consultation with the candidate.

●    The fee for this review is $50.

  • How do I become a certified Tour Guide-Interpreter?

In the past, you needed to pass a national examination (administered by the JNTO) and register with a local government to conduct foreign language tours in Japan. The law has been amended and now interpreting guidance can be provided regardless of qualifications.

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.
