How much money each pga tour champions player earned at the 2021 charles schwab cup championship, share this article.
PHOENIX — The 2021 Charles Schwab Cup Championship put a cap on the PGA Tour Champions “super” season.
Phil Mickelson won the season-finale by a shot over Steven Alker. It’s Lefty’s fourth win in six outings on the senior circuit, matching Jack Nicklaus. Mickelson earned $440,000 for the victory at Phoenix Country Club.
Bernhard Langer finished 17th but it was good enough for him to secure the season-long Charles Schwab Cup points title.
Darren Clarke and David Toms finished tied for third at 17 under. Brandt Jobe and Jim Furyk ended up in a tie for fifth.
This was the 20th Charles Schwab Cup Championship. Check out the final payout from the event. | Top 20 all-time Champions tour money winners
In addition to the tournament payouts, the top-five finishers in the season-long points race earn a chunk of money that will be paid out in an annuity.
- Bernhard Langer, $1 million
- Jim Furyk, $500,000
- Miguel Angel Jiménez, $300,000
- Ernie Els, $200,000
- Jerry Kelly, $100,000
The annuity is set to pay out over 10 years.

PGA Tour purses skyrocket; Korn Ferry Tour money is better; But what about PGA Tour Champions?
The highest purse is $4 million for the u.s. senior open. the winner of next year's players championship will win $500,000 more..
In August, the PGA Tour announced its series of 13 events — including The Players Championship — that will offer purse increases of nearly $100 million for the 2023 season, plus a doubling of the Player Impact Program to $100 million.
The Korn Ferry Tour had previously announced in 2021 that its purses will increase to $1 million for each regular-season event (up from $600,000 for most tournaments) and $1.5 million for the four-event Korn Ferry Finals.

- Miguel Angel Jimenez, 'golf's most interesting man,' returns to Timuquana still hungry to win
- Constellation Furyk & Friends: How to get there, how to watch
In between is the PGA Tour Champions, whose average purse this season of $2.1 million is only $600,000 more than the Korn Ferry Finals. There will be modest gains next year to an average of $2.3 million but only nine of the 27 events will offer bumps and at this point, the Constellation Furyk & Friends, being played this week at the Timuquana Country Club, may not be one of them.
So while PGA Tour players will have a chance to compete for first-place checks of up to $4.5 million for winning The Players (which exceeds the total purse for every PGA Tour Champions event), and Korn Ferry Tour players can make $180,000 for winning a regular-season event (nearly double the amount from most regular-season events in 2019), why aren’t Champions Tour earnings increasing at a fast pace than the projected 10 percent for next season?
The answer reflects the reality of the economics: Champions Tour purses are more dependent on title sponsorship contracts than TV money and it’s a tour financially supported by the PGA Tour anyway.
And with the PGA Tour tapping into its reserves and asking for more help from its title sponsors in response to the LIV Golf tour luring players away with mind-boggling, there’s little left in the kitty to throw to the Champions Tour.
Purse bumps depend on sponsors
“We’re in a different situation with the Tour,” said Steve Flesch, one of the members of the Champions Tour Policy Board. “We rely on tournament sponsors to generate our purses so we don’t have as big a piece of pie.”
Champions Tour president Miller Brady said it comes down to the contracts with each title sponsor. For example, the Furyk & Friends purse is $2 million for the balance of the five-year deal, unless Constellation agrees to a bump based on the event’s performance.
Judging from the success of the first two years, it might happen.
“When we sign a contract with a title sponsor, we have to see if the event will sustain itself,” Brady said. “There’s no question this tournament has done well.”
Tournament host Jim Furyk is optimistic.
“I think you'll start to see purses go up,” he said. “Is it always going to be as fast as the players want it? Probably not. I really do believe we're in a strong place right now and I think you will see increases.”
The top purses on the Champions Tour are $4 million for the U.S. Senior Open and $3.5 million for the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship, which are not run by the Tour. The highest purse for a Champions Tour event is $3 million for the Senior Players.
The Players Championship purse reached $3 million in 1995.
Players seem content
Despite the numbers, guess who’s not complaining?
The players, who seem to be doing their best to not be greedy when they have a situation unique in sports: a second chance after their PGA Tour careers to make what they consider pretty decent money, in mostly no-cut events, with the option of riding in carts.
“I’m still playing for more money than my rookie year on Tour,” said Jerry Kelly, one of five players who have won three times this season on the Champions Tour and fourth on the money list with more than $1.9 million – on the verge of his third consecutive season with $2 million or more in annual earnings, a barrier he reached four times on the PGA Tour.
“I’m pretty happy with what I’ve gotten," he continued. "Other guys coming out are maybe going to look at it and go ‘okay, this is low for what I’m used to,’ but as long as we don’t stay static, as long as it keeps trending up, that’s fine.”
Miguel Angel Jimenez, who is fifth on the money list with more than $1.8 million and on target to pass $2 million for the second season in a row said it would be nice if more money was available to players who were the backbone of the PGA Tour, but like Kelly, went out of his way not to appear disgruntled.
“I think they need to resource a little bit more [money],” said the 13-time Champions Tour winner. “Since I’ve been part of the Champions Tour the purses [are] not changing much and I think we make a little contribution to the golf in all those years. I think it would be good.”
Flesch said purses have been a topic in policy board meetings but not to a great extent because most have done so well on the PGA Tour.
“The PGA Tour has been great to us our whole career,” he said. “Yes, everybody would like the purses to go up but I don’t think guys are out here demanding.”
Career earnings sustain players
Nineteen players in this week’s Furyk & Friends field have made $20 million or more in career PGA Tour earnings, topped by the tournament host with $71.5 million (fourth on the all-time list), trailed closely by Vijay Sing ($71.2 million).
Ten in this week’s field have earned at least $10 million on the Champions Tour, led by Bernhard Langer with more than $33 million.
The Tour pension, based on cuts made also is lucrative. According to the last PGA Tour annual report that was made available in 2019, more than 600 professional golfers have $1 million or more in their pension plans and 114 had $3 million or more.
Brady said he understands if some Champions Tour players see the purses skyrocketing on the PGA Tour and wonder if there’s any loose change left for them.
“Of course, all of us want to grow our purses, players, the Tour, everyone,” Brady said. “But they have to grow organically through the title sponsors and local sponsorships. I don’t think money is an issue with the players but I get it if they see what’s happening on the regular Tour and they might as, ‘where’s our money?’ They would like a piece of it.”
But Furyk pointed out that the Champions Tour is unique among professional sports: its members can win tournaments and money long after the youngest social security age of 62.
Just look at Langer, who is 65, has won five times since turning 62 and is eighth on the current money list.
“We would like to see [purses] increase quicker, but as a player, I also have to realize I'm 52 years old,” he said. “I'm playing a sport for a living, I get to do what I love.”

The one new tournament on next year’s schedule, the Galleri Classic, will be played at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California. It’s the first time the PGA Tour Champions will play at Mission Hills since 1993.

The PGA Tour season finale sees defending champion Rory McIlroy among a field of 30 competing for the FedEx Cup

Tour championship field and starting positions.
The PGA Tour season draws to a close with the top 30 players in the FedEx Cup standings competing at East Lake in Georgia.
As well as a far smaller field than other events on the PGA Tour, the Tour Championship also has a unique scoring system based on each player's FedEx Cup standings before the tournament.
Sitting at the top of the list is World No.1 Scottie Scheffler . Thanks to that achievement, he starts with a two-shot advantage over his nearest competitor on 10-under.
The player closest to him is Viktor Hovland, thanks largely to his win in second FedEx Cup Playoff tournament, the BMW Championship at Olympia Fields. The Norwegian claimed victory in some style, too. In the final round, he carded a 61, the lowest in FedEx Cup Playoff history. Meanwhile, it was also the lowest of his career and a course record.
Given he's heading into this week's tournament on the back of such an impressive performance, it's unlikely Scheffler will feel comfortable at the top despite his two-shot head start.
Viktor Hovland begins two shots off the lead
One shot behind Hovland is Rory McIlroy , who starts at seven under. The 34-year-old is aiming for a record fourth FedEx Cup title as he attempts to replicate his win at East Lake last season, when he edged out Sungae Im and Scheffler in a thrilling final round . Given McIlroy's form of late, which has included top-10 finishes in each of his last nine starts, few would bet against him winning.
While each of the top three have good reason to believe they can lift the trophy on Sunday evening, there are several other realistic candidates. One is Masters champion Jon Rahm , who starts four shots off the lead. The Spaniard began 2023 in scintillating form, and if he can return to his best this week, he'll be in with an excellent chance of securing his first FedEx Cup title.

Lucas Glover, at five under, will also be hoping to continue a hot streak that has brought two wins in the last month, including the opening FedEx Cup PlayOff tournament, the FedEx St. Jude Championship . There is added incentive for the American to perform well as he still has a chance of persuading Ryder Cup captain Zach Johnson he is worthy of a wildcard for the match.
Beyond those players, others looking to eat into Scheffler's lead will be 2021 FedEx Cup winner Patrick Cantlay , who starts at four under, along with Max Homa , who ranks seventh in the world, Open champion Brian Harman . US Open winner Wyndham Clark and the player who won the Major in 2022, Matt Fitzpatrick, also begin six off the lead.
Other big names in the field include Tommy Fleetwood , Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele , who each begin at three under, while 2015 FedEx Cup winner Jordan Spieth begins 10 off the lead.
The tournament boasts a purse of $75m, with the winner taking home a huge $18m, while the runner-up will win $6.5m.
Below is the prize money, field and starting positions for the Tour Championship at East Lake.
- -10 Scottie Scheffler
- -8 Viktor Hovland
- -7 Rory McIlroy
- -6 Jon Rahm
- -5 Lucas Glover
- -4 Max Homa, Patrick Cantlay, Brian Harman, Wyndham Clark, Matt Fitzpatrick
- -3 Tommy Fleetwood, Russell Henley, Keegan Bradley, Rickie Fowler, Xander Schauffele
- -2 Tom Kim, Sungjae Im, Tony Finau, Corey Conners, Si Woo Kim
- -1 Taylor Moore, Nick Taylor, Adam Schenk, Collin Morikawa, Jason Day
- E Sam Burns, Emiliano Grillo, Tyrrell Hatton, Jordan Spieth, Sepp Straka
Where Is The Tour Championship Being Played?
The Tour Championship is played at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia. Established in 1904, the club is the oldest in Atlanta and was the home course of Bobby Jones.
Who Won The 2022 Tour Championship?
Rory McIlroy claimed his third FedEx Cup trophy in 2022 following a thrilling final day. That was despite getting the tournament off to the worst possible start with a triple-bogey. In the end, McIlroy edged out Sungae Im and Scottie Scheffler to claim the $18m first prize.

2024 PGA Championship prize money, purse: Payouts for Xander Schauffele, golfers from $18.5 million pool
This year's purse represents the largest in pga championship history.
The Wanamaker Trophy and a substantial winner's check were awarded Sunday at Valhalla Golf Club to Xander Schauffele, winner of the 2024 PGA Championship . Raising the purse for the PGA Championship by $1 million from a year ago, the PGA of America is shelling out the largest prize pool in the history of its championship with a total purse of $18.5 million.
A hefty $3.3 million prize will be awarded to Schauffele for going 21 under in Louisville with seven-figure sums being paid out to those golfers who finished on the podium but fell short of the top prize. Every player inside the top 10 by the end of the championship is taking home at least $500,000 with each golfer inside the top 31 cashing a check north of $100,000.
The payouts fall slightly short of those handed out after the 2024 Masters -- and from signature events on the PGA Tour -- both of which held purses of $20 million. Scottie Scheffler won $3.6 million for capturing his second green jacket, though that didn't even represent his largest payday of the season as he claimed $4 million at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and $4.5 million at the Players Championship.
Not only did those who made the weekend come away from their time in Kentucky with a little green to show for it, so will those who missed the cut. All players who carded a 36-hole total will receive $4,000 for their troubles. Considering how many PGA professionals were in the field, that's not bad for two days work.
Let's take a look at a breakdown of the PGA Championship purse.
Rick Gehman, Greg DuCharme, Patrick McDonald and Mark Immelman recap the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla. Follow & listen to The First Cut on Apple Podcasts and Spotify .

2024 PGA Championship payouts, purse: How much did Xander Schauffele earn for his win at Valhalla?
Xander schauffele, after a historic opening round, beat out bryson dechambeau to win his first career major championship on sunday.
At long last, Xander Schauffele now has a major championship.
Schauffele drained a clutch birdie putt at the 18th to beat Bryson DeChambeau on Sunday afternoon at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, and win the PGA Championship . It marked the first major championship of Schauffele's career and his eighth career win on the PGA Tour.
Schauffele went wire-to-wire after posting a course-record 62 to kick off the tournament. He also posted the lowest score to par ever at a major championship.

The PGA Championship increased its total purse to a record $18.5 million this year, up $1 million from last year’s tournament at Oak Hill. That left an impressive $3.3 million payday for Schauffele and at least $500,000 for everyone who finished inside the top 10.

A stacked leaderboard will play for a tournament-record purse at the PGA Championship on Sunday at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky.
Xander Schauffele and Collin Morikawa lead the PGA at 15 under, with Sahith Theegala (14 under) one back and Bryson DeChambeau , Shane Lowry and Viktor Hovland (13 under) two shots back.
The PGA of America announced on Saturday this year’s purse has increased to $18.5 million — a million more than last year — and the winner will take home $3.33 million. Second ($1.99 million) and third place ($1.26 million) will also earn seven figures.
When compared to golf’s others majors, the Masters had a total purse of $20 million last month. The 2023 U.S. Open was $20 million and the 2023 Open Championship $16.5 million. The Players Championship was played for $25 million back in March.
The PGA Tour’s Signature Events have a $20 million purse, and LIV Golf’s tournaments are played for $25 million, although $20 million of that is reserved for the individual competition while $5 million is for the team competition.
Check out the entire payout breakdown for the 2024 PGA Championship below, and you can watch the final round on Sunday from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. ET on ESPN and from 1-7 p.m. on CBS.
