Where are we going!?

We are heading to Chiang Mai! And we want to bring you with us!

The month of October to January is a special season for coffee farmers in Thailand. All the hard work they have put into cultivating their land throughout the year is marked for this particular period - because the coffee cherries are now ripe and ready to be harvested!

Journey with us to the remote parts of Chiang Mai, 1400 meters above sea level and we promise you a breathtaking view of mountains filled with red and green. Immerse yourself in the vast forest and witness its power, beauty and serenity while you take a sip on a cup of coffee.

We will be visiting two coffee farms and enjoy a sumptuous meal prepared by the locals. Have a taste of food made from the freshest ingredients - all grown organically and harvested on the same mountains.

Coffee Journey: A tour to a remote coffee village in Thailand

February 16, 2011 By James Clark 20 Comments

Coffee Journey: A tour to a remote coffee village in Thailand

Coffee Journey – A tour for those who love coffee

I can’t remember the last time I went on a tour that went more than a day, so I find it remarkable that on my stay in Chiang Mai I was talked into going on a three day tour. Well I wasn’t really talked into it. The conversation went something like this:

Friend: “Hey James, you like coffee. You should go on the Coffee Journey”. Me: “Ok”.

The combination of words coffee + journey had me hooked straight away. I signed up without asking what would be involved. If my friend had said, “Hey James, would you like to go away for three days with a bunch of people you don’t know with no internet and no hot water”, I may not have signed up. I’m glad I did.

The Coffee Journey is a tour put on by the owner of Akha Ama Coffee , a cafe I frequent regularly in Chiang Mai. Lee runs the cafe in Chiang Mai and the coffee is grown at his village in far Northern Thailand.

Lee at Akha Ama Coffee - Chiang Mai

With free wi-fi and possibly the best coffee in Chiang Mai , the Akha Ama cafe is a haven for remote workers, in a city full of remote workers.

Coffee Journey

The tour runs a few times a year, leaving Chiang Mai on a Friday morning and returning on Sunday afternoon. The ride to the village is about 5 hours from Chiang Mai . Once at the village we were invited into Lee’s family home where he talked about village life and its people. This region is home to the Akha people (Akha Ama means Akha Mother).

Traditional dress of Akha woman

We ate dinner in his home (thanks Ama), and were billeted out to homes in the village.

Remote Akha village

Coffee Time

Saturday morning. Breakfast, and finally a coffee!

Akha Ama Coffee for breakfast

To the coffee plantation

On the Saturday we walked an hour to the coffee plantation, where we got to see the full cycle of a coffee plant, from seedling to a mature tree. I was expecting a plantation type set up, with rows of coffee trees. Instead the coffee trees are mixed with larger trees and other fruit trees, which gives natural shade to the coffee. In addition to running this business, Lee has also been teaching the local farmers the benefits of using compost as fertilizer, rather than using chemical fertilizer. The coffee is organic, though it is not marketed as organic as it costs thousands of Euros to have official accreditation as an organic product.

Walking to the coffee plantation

After lunch we got the hands on experience of picking the coffee ourselves. This is quite an art form as you have have to pick the right coffee cherries (the dark red one and not the light red or green cherries). Care is also needed to not break the stem from the branch. Talk about pressure. To make it even more stressful, I had a seven year old girl who designated herself as union leader , and was inspecting all of my pickings for green cherries.

Basket of coffee cherries

In addition to picking the right colour cherry and not breaking any stems, the trees were located on a very steep hillside. There were falls and cherry spillage among us amateur pickers.

Coffee pickers

Processing the coffee

On the last morning we were shown how the picked cherries are processed. First the fruit is stripped from the bean and then the bad beans are removed.

Coffee cherry remover

From there the beans are soaked for 2 to 3 days in water. After that they are hand washed. All of them! The unwashed beans are quite slippery, so after hand washing the beans are removed of this slippery film.

Soaking coffee beans

From here the beans are then sun dried for a couple of weeks, depending on the weather. Once dried the beans are bagged and stored for six months. The beans are then machine processed to remove the outer husk, then finally ready for roasting.

Drying coffee beans

Talk about a process. I have a new appreciation for coffee (on top of the appreciation I already have for coffee). I will never look at a coffee the same way again. If you love coffee I would highly recommend this tour. For details on the tour check out the Akha Ama Facebook page. The tours aren’t on a regular schedule so you may need to check back regularly.

Hi James! I am an avid traveler myself and am in the process of putting together my next trip which will be mainly around Thailand and Cambodia. I just learned about Laos today and have been nonstop researching it for the past 6 hours haha. I randomly came across your travel blog and just had to say that it is absolutely wonderful! Beautiful pictures and great descriptions. The more I read about it the more I feel it absolutely necessary to make a trip to Laos; just seems a bit difficult to get to. So, just wanted to thank you for the great website and all the information from your trips. Happy travels!

March 10, 2011 at 3:18 am

Hi Calle, thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it!

If you are making a trip to Thailand and Cambodia, Laos will fit in well with your travels. You can do a loop that will include Laos. For example you could travel up to Northern Thailand and cross into Laos from there. Travel down Laos until you get to Si Phan Don (Four Thousand Islands). From there you are near the Cambodia border.

I look forward to hearing about your travels.

The Coffee Lover's Chiang Mai Travel Guide

Chiang Mai coffee is amongst the best in the world. Thailand does coffee well. If you are planning a visit soon, you're in for a real treat when it comes to java. Chiang Mai, in particular, is Thailand's coffee capital, an amazing historic region in Thailand's Northern provinces. You may be content to just drop by a cafe on your way through Chiang Mai, but why not make it into your own DIY coffee tour?

Read on for your official Chiang Mai coffee guide. Make sure you grab a cup of joe from all of these places in the midst of relaxing .

What Makes Chiang Mai Coffee Distinct

Before you go buzzing around to all of Chiang Mai's cafes, sipping on cups of joe morning and night, it's key to know a few things about this province before doing so. Specifically--what makes Chiang Mai the coffee capital of Thailand?

Chiang Mai is located in the northern part of Thailand. The city itself is a destination for its history, thriving culture, and cuisine. Organic coffee farms sit way above sea level nestled amongst the surrounding mountains.

Coffee plants thrive so well in Thailand because they appreciate the cooler temperatures of the Northern Province. They flourish in the rich, dark soil that is home to so many other native plants.

If you want to truly engage in the Chiang Mai coffee culture, get a sense of how coffee begins on one of these coffee farms (see below). You can also visit smaller villages located in the Chiang Mai province that are becoming known for their Arabica beans and rich, aromatic brews.

The cafes in and out of Chiang Mai will be using these local beans - if you don't have time to trek through the mountains and try your hand at roasting your own beans, don't worry. You'll get an authentic experience no matter what.

If you do drop into some of the cafes, make sure you purchase a bag or two of authentic beans to take back with you for family and loved ones.

Coffee Farms and Villages

This little village is starting to grow a name by virtue of its devotion to coffee. Its residents have been growing coffee for over twenty years. Now, there is a Doi Chaang Coffee Company , a thriving business that is putting this village on the map.

Doi Chaang is located a bit outside of Chiang Mai city and is accessible by rental car. Visitors can take a day trip or stay in one of the guest lodges in the village.

Arrange a tour of the coffee plantation, read about its history at the local coffee museum, and of course--taste authentic espresso yourself at the plantation's on-site cafe.

Suan Lahu offers a similar coffee plantation experience to visitors. This plantation focuses on sustainable growing practices and is passionate about raising the coffee crop in as ecological a way as possible.

Visitors will also receive a tour of the plantation, participate in educational activities, and sample delicious espresso. Guests will also get a chance to learn about local community members and sustainable farming techniques. Suan Lahu is accessible via arranged tour or rental car.

Chiang Mai Cafes

When it comes to cafes that everyone talks about--including the locals--you'll have to pause at Akha Ama.

This delightful little cafe uses locally sourced and sustainable beans. You can get here with a quick tuk tuk ride from any part of the historic city. You'll also be able to purchase bags of roasts from the cafe itself to take back home as gifts.

  • Wat Pha Khao

This unassuming coffee stand is a timeless fixture of Chiang Mai. Drop by for an inexpensive but high quality cup of java, crafted from beans grown in Thailand's highlands.

The stand is located close to beautiful temples, so you can sip your espresso and take in historic architecture.

  • Ristr8to Lab

If you're looking for a global experience, drop by Ristro8to Lab in order to try some of the best beans in the world. Come prepared to be educated, because the menu is detailed and the staff are well versed in all things coffee.

While this cafe enables you to try the best java sourced from around the world, it also is home to the best selection of Chiang Mai coffee beans. You'll be guaranteed an informative and delicious experience.

  • Coffee Lovers

This little cafe is named Coffee Lovers for a reason. Pause by here if you are looking for a quiet afternoon indulgence in some tasty locally sourced beans. It's located on a very calm side street in the heart of the city and offers up baked goods in addition to authentic espresso.

If you want to read a book, process your Thai adventure, or jot some notes on your travel blog, Coffee Lovers is the place to go.

Chiang Mai Coffee

Chiang Mai offers so much to any visitor of Thailand, delighting tourists with extensive history, authentic cuisine , and a chance to relax at a spa or resort. It is also Thailand's coffee capital. Chiang Mai coffee should be an important part of your tour of this beautiful province.

When you're wandering through Chiang Mai, make sure you spend some time visiting a real coffee plantation like Suan Lahu or Doi Chaang to see how plants are grown and treated. When you're passing through the city, make sure you put Akha Ama on your list for cafes to visit, as well as Ristro8to Lab, Coffee Lovers, and Wat Pha Khao Coffee.

At the end of the day, whatever cafe or farm you step into will offer you the most delicious beans you've ever encountered--guaranteed.

Why not turn your coffee tour into an extended stay in Chiang Mai?

This province is also known for its phenomenal resorts and luxury hotels. Howie's Homestay is rated among the top five resorts in Chiang Mai , and offers guests an unforgettable eco experience. The resort is situated amidst rice paddies, fertile valleys, and lush hillsides and relies on sustainable and ecological practices.
