Itching to explore Canada’s vast wilderness in a new way? Hop in a kayak and immerse yourself in the great outdoors with an on-the-water expedition. Here is a list of some of Canada’s most beautiful paddling destinations. Some are rough and rugged, others are leisurely and relaxing, but all are certain to give you a new appreciation for the landscape.
Iceberg Alley, Newfoundland
Every year from May through July, giant icebergs break off from the west coast of Greenland and drift along the Labrador Current to the east coast of Newfoundland. This “Iceberg Alley” is one of the best places in the world to ice-watch and it has become a hot spot for kayakers who want to get up close and personal with these awe-inspiring behemoths. Lucky paddlers might also spot a few humpback whales enjoying the waves. Guided day trips for newbies and multi-day adventures for hardcore kayakers are available from companies like Stan Cook Sea Kayak Adventures and Ocean Quest Adventures.
Quetico Provincial Park, Ontario
This Northwestern Ontario park, located on the border of Minnesota, has long been one of the country’s most popular canoeing destinations, but its popularity is on the rise with kayakers, too. With more than 600 lakes to explore and the beautiful backdrop of an ancient shield rock forest, it’s not hard to see why. Paddlers can journey down the historic boat paths of French Canadian fur traders, view undisturbed rare wildlife, or just bask in the blissful silence of the motor-free waterways. There are routes suited to all levels of experience, but experts insist that the 10-day loop around Hunter’s Island is the most rewarding choice.
Johnstone Strait, British Columbia
There are lots of kayaking options available around Vancouver Island, but the Johnstone Strait has a special trump card—killer whales! Approximately 230 orcas have made themselves at home in the region and it’s one of the best places on earth to kayak alongside the species. If that’s not enough to convince you to grab your paddle, you can also expect to mingle with dolphins, seals, sea lions, minke whales and black bears. A word of caution though, this route is not a great option for novices. The currents are very strong and wind levels and boat wakes can prove problematic. You can also expect to get very wet. For a good tour option try Spirit of the West Adventures or Sea Kayak Adventures .
Bay of Fundy, Nova Scotia
Home to the largest tides on earth, the Bay of Fundy can seem like a challenging undertaking. But the bay does provide some shelter from the unpredictable open ocean and an awesome experience awaits anyone willing to brave the waters. Following the coastline of Cape Chigneto Provincial Park, kayakers will be awed by 600-foot sea cliffs, impressed by fascinating rock formations like the “Three Sisters” sea stacks, and tempted by large caves ripe for exploring. Advanced paddlers can brave the waters of the Fundy Isles and one of the world’s largest whirlpools called “Old Sow.” Guided day and multi-day tours are available from Nova Shores Adventures.
Georgian Bay, Ontario
This is classic Ontario wilderness at its finest—an opportunity to experience the iconic rugged landscape of granite islands and windswept pine trees. With more than 30,000 islands to explore, there are an overwhelming number of route options. You can jump start your trip from any number of locations along the shore, anywhere from Parry Sound to Killarney. Be aware that Georgian Bay is a huge body of water, four fifths the size of Lake Ontario, and it can be as wild and unpredictable as any of the great lakes. Winds will often come out of nowhere, transforming tranquil waters into rough waves. Novice paddlers might enjoy a relaxed pace tour around Franklin Island, whereas more adventurous kayakers can venture out to the more secluded Mink Islands. There are numerous tour companies offering guided tours, but the accessibility of the area makes self-guided journeys a popular choice.
The South Nahanni River, Northwest Territories
If you’re craving a serious adventure, head up to the Northwest Territories and tackle a section of the Nahanni River, which stretches for more than 500 km. It has plenty of steep drops and white water rapids to really get your blood pumping. The river also flows through some pretty incredible scenery, including Canada’s greatest waterfall Virginia Falls, which is twice the height of Niagara Falls. There are mountain ranges, unusual wildlife, and historical locations that have earned Nahanni a spot on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Tour companies like Black Feather frequently run canoe trips, but private kayak excursions can easily be arranged, too.

12 Reasons to Visit Canada's Beautiful Cottage Country
Staff Writer
Cottage country is a popular name for destinations in the province of Ontario (and some other regions in Canada as well) that people head to for a weekend or longer trip. Ontario’s cottage country is full of vacation homes close to lakes, nature and small towns where visitors can unwind, find good food and drink, and discover Ontario’s beautiful outdoors. Muskoka, the Kawarthas, and Haliburton are favourites to get away from it all, but there are lots of other up and coming vacation spots in the region. These are some of our favourite reasons to head to cottage country.
The scenery.
Scenery is quite literally a breath of fresh air for city slickers and cottage country is an ideal place to soak in some nature. The Haliburton Highlands are a prime location for an impressive landscape and anywhere in the Kwarthas is equally as mesmerizing as are Muskoka, Prince Edward County, and Bruce Country. Ontario is rich with parks, lakes, beaches, various terrain, greenery, and forest so the scenery will be breathtaking wherever you decide to go.
Cottage country will bring you closer to some of the best lookouts and viewpoints in Ontario. Osler Bluff Lookout, the highest point along the Bruce Trail is 540 metres above sea level and overlooks a stretch of the Niagara Escarpment and luminous waters of Georgian Bay. To reach it follow the Pretty River Valley Provincial Nature Reserve’s blue-blazed trail in Collingwood.
Muskoka is also full of stunning viewpoints, from world-famous Algonquin Park to sunset at Huckleberry Rock to the wonderful unadulterated views of Fairy Lake at Lion’s Lookout. Muskoka’s real gem is Georgian Bay Islands National Park where you can look at 30,000 freshwater islands and the iconic pine trees.
To stay in the beautiful homes
From lovely hotels to cozy inns and rustic lakeside homes, one reason to escape to the country is for the blissful and serene places to stay. Sanctuary In The County , in the heart of Prince Edward County is just one example of the vacation homes found in these areas that will put you seconds away from wineries, beaches, trails, and other top attractions. Whether you’re looking for an adventure in the great outdoors or just a weekend of relaxation with a campfire by the lake, there are plenty of amazing places to stay that will let you enjoy the best of cottage country.
For the craft breweries
Cottage country has a massive brewery culture. Whether it’s Side Launch Brewing Company’s wheat beer in Collingwood, or a bitter IPA at Muskoka Brewery in Bracebridge, or a spicy stout from Gravenhurst’s Sawdust City Brewing Co., craft beer aficionados will love what they find! In Prince Edward County head to Picton and look for Barley Days Brewery and try the Loyalist Lager or Scrimshaw Oyster Stout. Boshkung Brewery in the Algonquin Highlands has a dark ale called Black Rock that’s not to be missed. Lake of Bays Brewing Co. lies between two cottage country jewels, Haliburton and Muskoka, and their 10-Point IPA or Spark House Red Ale are must-haves.
For the delicious wine
Ontario’s cottage country has some fantastic wineries where you can discover the province’s vineyards and wine-making traditions along with culinary delights. At Muskoka Lakes Winery , the award winning wine is made from what is growing locally, cranberries, blueberries, apples, and even maple syrup. Prince Edward County , home to the unforgettable Sandbanks Provincial Park, is one of Ontario’s newest wine destinations where many of the vineyards serve brick oven pizzas.
Lake Erie North Shore and Pelee Island has the same latitude as as northern California and Bordeaux, France and is one of the oldest grape-growing regions in Canada. Point Pelee is one of the largest remaining wetlands in Southern Canada, and every year 300,000 visitors head to this tiny national treasure of lush forestation, grasslands, and marshes.
To eat pizza in a vineyard
The wineries in cottage country have their own special allure, but imagine being able dine al fresco in a vineyard that is serving up fresh wood-fired pizza. Prince Edward County has a number of spots that now offer pizza alongside their selection of wines, TerraCello Winery, Norman Hardie Winery and Vineyard, and Hillier Creek Estates Winery. Along the shores of Lake Eerie in the Essex Pelee Island Coast wine region of Harrow, Paglione Estate Winery also serves pizza from a wood-burning clay oven.
To eat local
In addition to wine, beer, and pizza, cottage country has a delicious food scene. The large number of restaurants, cafes, and eateries in every destination speak for themselves, but the locally baked goods, cheeses, maple syrup, pickles, mustards, and other edible delights are not to be missed. A lot of the areas also have farmers markets where you can pick up seasonal and fresh local produce.
To explore charming and historic small towns
The urban landscape of cities is exciting, but small towns offer an opportunity to discover local culture at an easier pace. Getaways to cottage country will take you closer to some of Ontario’s small town gems where you can indulge in local attractions like cute bakeries, tea shops, and eateries, historical landmarks, boutique stores, and strolling through postcard perfect streets.
To experience the festivals
In cottage country there are festivals all year round to suit every interest, from food and drink to arts and culture and music all weekend. One of the biggest music festivals is WayHome which takes place at Oro-Medonte in Simcoe County, another regional gem in Ontario’s cottage country. Riverfest Elora and Parry Sound’s Turtle Music Festival are also hot tickets that will let you discover more districts that are just made for a getaway. While most of the festivals take place in the summer, during the winter holiday season and colder months there are still a number of events worth checking out. Countylicious in Prince Edward County celebrates all things culinary with and runs twice a year.
For stargazing
One of the best things about heading out of the city is leaving behind the artificial light pollution. Some areas in cottage country are particularly remote and give visitors an opportunity to enjoy the splendour of clear, dark skies. There are a number of places to see the stars like you’ve never seen them before. The pitch-black darkness of Torrance Barrens Dark Sky Preserve in the heart of the Muskoka area is perfect for stargazing and even viewing meteor showers. Point Pelee National Park and Bruce Peninsula Fathom Five National Park in Tobermory are other unique places to experience the beauty of starlight .
For an outdoor adventure
From a leisurely paddle to adrenaline-pumping rapids or winter sports and activities, outdoor adventures are easily had in cottage country. You could kayak in Georgian Bay, paddle any one of Ontario’s half a million lakes and rivers or explore shipwrecks at Fathom Five National Park. During the winter, spend your weekends at cottages that are close to the slopes, so you can practice flying down snowy hills and explore frosted forests.
For the hiking and trails
One of the best ways to discover cottage country is on foot. Muskoka’s incredible looping terrains through lakes and woodlands offer plenty of options for day hikes. The cottage region around Arrowhead Provincial Park in the heart of Muskoka is very popular. The trails surrounding Lake Mayflower and Lake Arrowhead have the historical remains of homes from 1870 which make for an interesting vista.
At almost 900 kilometres, the Bruce Trail runs from Niagara to Tobermory and is Canada’s oldest and longest footpath. There are plenty of vacation homes close to this UNESCO biosphere reserve that will let visitors discover the waterfalls, limestone caves, and forests along this trail. Haliburton’s extensive trail network is a dream come true for avid for hikers and mountain bikers. In Prince Edward County, hikers can wander through Cedar Sands Trail and experience the unique ecology of a dune forest.

Ten Must See Attractions in Ontario’s Cottage Country
Because of its close proximity to large urban centres such as Toronto, Kingston, North Bay and Ottawa, Eastern Ontario and Cottage Country destinations require less driving and feature some impressive day trip locations. Even though this part of Ontario is heavily populated, major expressways leading to winding backcountry roads allow explorers to quickly get away from the crowds and discover some exceptional natural attractions, and those choosing to stick closer to the major cities will still find some interesting gems. Here are a few of our favorite Eastern Ontario and Cottage Country destinations.
Barron Canyon (Map 92/E3)
Located on the eastern side of Algonquin Park, Barron Canyon is considered one of Algonquin Park’s most spectacular sights. The canyon was formed 10,000 years ago as raging water from melting glaciers made its way to the Champlain Sea. Today, the Barron River gently courses through the impressive canyon. A 1.5 km long interpretative trail passes through pine forest to the rim of the spectacular 100 metre (330 ft) deep canyon. Canoeists also frequent the waterway. If you have opportunity to do both, it is possible to hike the trail in the morning and paddle the river in the afternoon. Day visitors can rent a canoe from Algonquin Bound , who have a location close by.
Bracebridge Waterfalls (Maps 35, 36, 50, 51)
There are 22 waterfalls around the Bracebridge area. Rather than pick and choose between the falls, we recommend getting a copy of the Waterfalls of Bracebridge map (available at tourismbracebridge.com ) and spend the day visiting a few of them. Bracebridge Falls and High Falls are both located within Bracebridge, but many are found right along roads in the surrounding area, making them easy to visit.
Ontario Backroad GPS Maps
Bonnechere Caves (Map 75/D3)
The Bonnechere Caves are a series of underground caves that were carved into the limestone thousands of years ago by the rushing water of the Bonnechere River. Interesting geological features include stalactites along with coral and sea fossils that are remnants of pre-dinosaur life forms, with the theory being that the caves were once the bottom of a tropical sea over 500 million of years ago. Guided tours are required to explore the caves for a nominal fee from the beginning of May until October. The impressive fourth chute and picnic facilities are also found here. Visit bonnecherecaves.com for more information on the caves, found on Fourth Chute Road in Eganville.
Canadian Canoe Museum (Map 13/G1)
There is nothing more Canadian than the canoe and the Canadian Canoe Museum was started with the canoe collection of late Professor Kirk Wipper. Located in Peterborough, it now has over 600 boats with over 100 on display at any one time. The collection includes dugouts from the First Nations of the Pacific Northwest, birch bark canoes, kayaks and many wood and canvas canoes manufactured by the giants in their heyday, including Peterborough, Chestnut, Lakefield and more. The museum is located at 910 Monaghan Road in Peterborough. Visit their website, canoemuseum.ca , for details on opening times, exhibits and more.
Craft Beer Brewers
As the popularity of craft beer continues to grow, more and more small micro-breweries are popping up throughout Cottage Country. If you are in the Durham region, check out Old Flame in Port Perry or Little Beasts in Whitby. In the Ottawa Valley, favorites include Whitewater Brewing in Foresters Falls and Cartwright Springs near Pakenham. Many local establishments carry regional favorites giving visitors the opportunity to try a pint or two.
Old Flame in Port Perry
Egan Chutes
Located about 10 km east of Bancroft, Egan Chutes is a non-operating Ontario Provincial Park, meaning it is free to visit. Signage is pretty much non-existent so watch for the bridge over the York River and follow the road in immediately on the north-west side of the bridge. The impressive and wild falls drop in stages and then flow through a short gorge. There are no fences to keep people back so there are plenty of spots to get close to the falls but use caution, the water is both fast and powerful.
Gilles Grove Nature Reserve (Map 77/D5)
Gilles Grove is one of the last old growth pine forests in Ontario. Kept completely natural by the Gilles Lumber family, numerous trails crisscross the reserve where you will find Sugar Maple, Yellow Birch, American Beech, Eastern Hemlock and Basswood. However, the claim to fame here is the tallest tree in Ontario. This mighty Eastern white pine tree stands 47 metres (154 ft) high. The 22 ha (56 ac) property, located in Arnprior, was purchased by the Nature Conservancy of Canada in 2001 and continues to be allowed to grow and die the way nature intended. Once finished exploring the grove, plan a visit to Wes’ Chips, an Ottawa Valley institution located on Madawaska Boulevard.
Hell Holes Caves (Map 28/F6)
A 3.2 km (2 mi) meandering hiking trail allows visitors to this park to discover some of the unique natural and geological features of the area that once served as an ancient pathway of the Salmon River. The park takes its name from a deep hole that was carved out of the rock and resembles a small cavern. In addition, after climbing a ladder down into the underground to investigate the cave, a natural stone bridge and notable vegetation can also be explored. The park is situated east of Centreville.
Oxtongue River-Ragged Falls Provincial Park (Map 70/B7)
A great destination in itself, most visitors to Algonquin Park miss this small park just outside the west park boundary. However, the impressive Ragged Falls are well worth seeing, especially during the early spring runoff. The power and force of these falls can be seen up close from the base of the falls or the top. There are a number of large rocks right at the top of the falls that sure footed visitors can walk out on to get a close up view.
Petroglyphs Provincial Park (Map 25/E2)
The Learning Place at Petroglyphs Provincial Park was built to communicate to visitors the spiritual significance that the Teaching Rocks had to the First Nations people of this region. The centre features information panels, paintings and videos. Of course, once people have visited the Learning Place, most continue on to see the Petroglyphs themselves, which are now housed in a protective, temperature-controlled building. The park also offers over 17 km (10.6 mi) of hiking trails. Access to the park is on Northey’s Bay Road near Woodview.
This is just a small sampling of the attractions Eastern Ontario and Cottage Country offers. Road trips are also a great option with routes throughout Muskoka, especially beautiful in the fall, and the well-known Highway 511 drive, a scenic winding route between Calabogie and Perth through Lanark County, all leading to interesting destinations. Pick up our Cottage Country Ontario Backroad Mapbook , Ontario GPS Maps or Algonquin Provincial Park Waterproof Map and begin your adventure.
These are just a few of the many Backroad Adventures spread throughout Ontario. Did we miss your favourite POI? Let us know. Our Cottage Country Ontario Backroad Mapbook , Ontario GPS Maps and Algonquin Provincial Park Waterproof Map are excellent resources for exploring this area of Ontario.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.
Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.
Belfry and Neighbouring Churches
Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.
To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.
Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral
The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.
Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.
Tsaritsa's Chambers
The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.
At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.
Palace of Tsar Alexis
The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
