Every song on Jelly Roll's Country Thunder AZ setlist from 'Halfway to Hell' to 'Save Me'

country thunder tour

Named New Artist of the Year — and deservedly so — by the Country Music Association, Jelly Roll was an enigmatic force of nature in September, opening for fellow Country Thunder Arizona headliner Eric Church at Talking Stick Resort Amphitheatre, where he told the crowd he’s all about “real music for real people with real problems.”

The Jelly Roll phenomenon had only gotten stronger by the time he took the stage at Country Thunder Arizona 2024 for the most anticipated headlining performance of the weekend on Saturday, April 13.

He performed "Need a Favor" and "Halfway to Hell," and the setlist was loaded with favorites stretching back to his earlier hip-hop songs for the "old-school, day-one Jelly Roll fans" in attendance.

He also honored Toby Keith and Lynyrd Skynyrd, did a Brantley Gilbert song and treated the crowd to a hit-filled medley of hip-hop songs that shaped the man he is today.

'Everything I dreamed': Jelly Roll took Country Thunder Arizona to church in inspiring set

Jelly Roll 2024 setlist: Every song he did at Country Thunder Arizona

Here's every song Jelly Roll played on Saturday, April 13, at Country Thunder Arizona :

  • "Halfway to Hell"
  • "Dead Man Walking"
  • "Son of a Sinner"
  • "Should've Been a Cowboy" (Toby Keith tribute)
  • "Boys in the Hood"/"Ruff Ryders' Anthem"/"Lose Yourself"/"Ms. Jackson"/"Just a Friend"
  • "Son of the Dirty South" (Brantley Gilbert cover)
  • "Hate Goes On"
  • "Fall in the Fall"
  • "Smoking Section"
  • "Bottle and Mary Jane"
  • "Need a Favor"
  • "Simple Man" (Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute)

The most Arizona things we saw at Country Thunder 2024, from Miss Arizona to 93 degree days

country thunder tour

It says Arizona right there in the name, but Country Thunder Arizona had moments that felt a little more specific to our festival than any of those other Country Thunder destinations, from Saskatchewan in western Canada to Bristol, Tennessee.

It’s true, we had no formerly Phoenix-based names at the top of the bill this year, like we did in 2023 when Dierks Bentley brought it all home with a crowd-pleasing headlining set. But TikTok breakout Avery Anna recognized her high school teacher from the main stage. She’s from Flagstaff, as it turns out (but her teacher knew that). And Miss Arizona USA was there all weekend in her sash and crown.

Here's a look back at the most Arizona things we saw at Country Thunder Arizona 2024.

Country Thunder throwback: The festival's origin story and the stars that made the '90s shine

Flagstaff TikTok sensation rocks main stage

Not many artists playing Country Thunder Arizona’s main stage can legitimately point to someone in the audience and tell the crowd “Guys, this is, like, a teacher from my high school.”

But TikTok breakout Avery Anna is from Arizona, as she told us several times in the course of her performance Thursday afternoon. She even mentioned her teacher by name before the set was through, clearly thrilled to be rocking a festival crowd that included a familiar face from high school.

Anna’s mom was also in attendance.

After “Just Cause I Love You,” the ballad that made her an overnight TikTok sensation, Anna told the crowd she recorded the song in the bathtub at her mother’s house in Flagstaff during COVID. She moved to Nashville when the song went viral.

Miss Arizona USA makes the scene in her sash and crown

When first we saw  Miss Arizona USA, Candace Kanavel , during the second performance on opening day, she was in the pit with Sean McShea enjoying a crowd-pleasing cover of Taylor Swift’s “Love Song” by Halle Kearns, who introduced it by telling us “This woman raised me.”

Kanavel was wearing her Miss Arizona sash over a little knit dress while rocking her pageant crown at the time. When she took the stage a few sets later, she was wearing her work clothes. She’s a Tempe police officer — the first contestant in her line of work to compete in the Miss USA pageant.

Arizona weather was pure desert spring

A high of 93 degrees on the opening day of an outdoor festival in early April? That’s some Arizona weather for you.

And the cowboy look felt more authentic in the Arizona desert.

That sea of cowboys hats was probably no different than the scene at any country music festival, but there’s an air of authenticity to dressing like a cowboy in a state that can lay claim to having hosted the gunfight at the OK Corral and been the filming location for the John Wayne western “Stagecoach.” There’s even a western titled “Arizona,” shot in Tucson. And by “shot,” we mean “filmed,” not “gunned down in the street at high noon outside the saloon."

Flatland Cavalry’s George Strait cover was a sweet Arizona shout out

Flatland Cavalry covered a classic that’s a strong contender for the greatest Arizona reference in a country song, “Ocean Front Property” by the great George Strait.

The song opens with a string of bald-faced lies about how little the narrator will care if you leave him.

“If you leave me, I won't miss you,” he sings. “And I won't ever take you back/ Girl, your memory won't ever haunt me 'cause I don't love you.”

It’s all just a setup, of course, for a singalong chorus of “And now if you'll buy that, I've got some ocean front property in Arizona/ From my front porch, you can see the sea.”

Did they play it because they found themselves in Arizona? Doubtful. It sounded way too good to think they'd learned it just for this performance.

Scottsdale’s Hippie Chicks brought weed to Country Thunder

For their first year at Country Thunder, the Hippie Chicks sold THC and CBD gummies, ice cream and liquid kratom shots ranging from $10-$15.

The inspiration for the Scottsdale company came to owner Mike Halsam four years ago. As a chiropractor, he saw a lot of older female patients who were scared to try marijuana. They were nervous to go to a dispensary; they didn’t know what to get or how much to take.

“So our goal was to try and make that process easier,” Halsam said. “We found women who are in the cannabis industry or use cannabis on a regular basis and we tell their story on the back of this box. All the women on our packaging are real people.”

— Dina Kaur

Local music rocks the second stage

There was plenty of Arizona talent on the Copperhead Road Stage, tucked behind the food court, from the Parker Jenkins Band to Last Train to Juarez, Nathan Dean & The Damn Band, the Country Line, Shari Rowe, Jacob Morris, Lacey Rashea & The Young Guns and Alec Taylor Band.

If Jelly Roll knows one thing about the state of Arizona…

Jelly Roll frequently punctuated his sentence with the word Arizona followed by an exclamation point in the course of his profoundly moving, truly entertaining set .

He also acknowledged our natural affinity for cowboy music by way of introducing “Should’ve Been a Cowboy.”

"We lost a legend this year when we lost Toby Keith," he said. "As I was walking onstage, I said, 'I tell you what, I don't think there's a better place to honor Toby Keith than from right here. And if I know one thing about the state of Arizona, ya'll love some cowboy music, don't ya?"

They took our $400 deposit and when Covid hit and our cruise was cancelled they were the only ones who did not provide a refund. They said the same thing "we used the money for other tours". Instead of holding the deposit in escrow they were robbing Peter to pay Paul. They claim we can use it for a future tour so we can't get a reimbursement from travel insurance. • L9558EXdaniels 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Don’t believe their terms and conditions They basically stole our money. Paid in advance for a tour in September 2020 that had terms and conditions stating that if the cruise didn’t run they would give us a full refund. I spent well over a year asking for that refund only to have them declare they had spent our money on other tours and couldn’t refund us. Then they made it difficult to claim the money on our insurance by refusing to state they were never giving our money back. Avoid at all costs! Read more Written August 10, 2022

The taxi I called didn't arrive and I was half an hour late but I managed to phone Ekaterina and she waited patiently in the cold for me to arrive. She is mind of information and very knowledgeable about the history of St Petersburg and spoke perfect English. I would have been lost without her assistance and she even arranged for a taxi to pick me up and take me back to the hotel. She was a wonderful guide: friendly, cheerful and hugely knowledgable. She collected us promptly at our hotel and we spent a full day discovering the key sights of the city – a perfect introduction that we could never have managed alone. She told us a huge amount about the city, its history and its place in the wider story of Russia. The tour was built around us and what we wanted to do, and Marina and the excellent driver helped make sure we got back a little early as we were heading out for the evening. A magical day! • EmilyRoseLa 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles 5 stars for the guide! Our guide was wonderful, knowledgeable, and very sweet. She knew so much about the imperialists and could answer our questions as well as give us a summary of what we were seeing, how it fit into history and the timeline of the royals, and lots of interesting, funny anecdotes! This company however is unorganized. They gave us a meeting point and then gave our guide another meeting point, so we were both waiting on opposite sides of the river at the appointed time and we lost about a half hour of the tour while getting things sorted. I tried calling the number (we had a Russian SIM card and everything) but there was no answer. We ended up finding another tour guide from ULKO Tours who was with a different group and asking him to call a contact person. In the end it sounds like there was some internal misunderstandings due to a change in employees, but that didn't give us our half hour back. Again, the tour guide herself was wonderful and if this company has sorted its issues, I would highly recommend it! Read more Written December 10, 2019
  • boogiecat 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Very touristy - appalling behavior from large tour group The performers are undeniably talented but this is definitely an experience geared toward foreign tourists. There was a very large tour group from another country at the show and some of those individuals were openly arguing during the performance in their native language which ruined some of it. There was also some dreadful behavior during the break for snacks with people leaving used glasses and half-eaten food on the tables where the food was being served from which was terribly unsanitary. I don't blame the folk show for the bad behavior but Americans or Western Europeans beware. Other reviews had hinted at the problems with the large tour groups and I didn't realize how bad it would be. The Russian performers deserve 5 stars -- excellent, so talented. The foreign tourists visiting Russia - 0 stars for appalling behavior. Read more Written November 14, 2019

  • BKE9 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Choose your own adventure! With your ideas and this company’s expertise, this will be the best tour you’ve ever taken!!(Especially if you have Julia as your guide and Artem as your driver) This company impressed us long before the tour. Anton in the office answered my countless questions via email beforehand. They also make sure they have all the paperwork in place for you. We had an overview of the city our first day in St. Petersburg(different company) and wanted to focus on every day living for our choice day. Our list included the subway, a grocery store, schools and getting outside of the city. What made Julia different from other guides we’ve had is that she tried to get to know us so she could accommodate our wishes. We had a few gaps and she was able to fill them perfectly. Better yet, she also let us get to know her. Julia is a wealth of information but we didn’t feel like we’ve been to a college lecture. She allowed for questions and conversation along the way. The other thing we appreciated was that our guide and driver were in sync. We had been with tours where the guide and driver didn’t agree on the route to be taken and it was very uncomfortable. Artem was an excellent driver. Rush hour traffic, bathroom stop...? No problem! When it was all over, my sister said to me “I like Julia so much I’d love to have her come visit and stay with me in the US.” I felt the same way. We left feeling we had a friend in St. Petersburg. We booked through Viator in Berlin and it was an ULKO tour as well. We were extremely pleased with both tours. Small groups and excellent tour guides. Our 2-day St Petersburg Russia tour with guide Lisa was so very educational and her knowledge very advanced. The sites were well timed and the 2 Russian lunches were authentic and very good. Our experience left us with a very good overview of St Petersburg and Russia's history. We were on NCL Getaway and we watched large NCL excursions loading buses while 14 of us took our ULKO tour. Processing through Customs was smooth with our ULKO trip vouchers. We highly recommend using ULKO for your Baltic excursions. Berlin/Sachsenhausen was also of very high quality.
