The Ship Clearance of Sydney Harbour Bridge is 49 Metres.

Could not find any Air Draught (height between highest point of ship and Summer Water Line) figures for Oosterdam except her draught of 7.9m, however, she is a sistership to Zuiderdam which has a draught of 7.8m and height from the keel of 57.83m giving an approx air height (draught) of 50m. Assuming that Oosterdam is similar (both being Vista class ships) then she would be 1m too tall for the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Maybe Baz might have the answer?

It wont fit under and the bridge. It is a Vista and they are taller than the Sun class which only has a very small clearence to fit under.

And on two Saturdays in March, the O is booked according to Sydney Ports web site into the new White Bay terminal. On 2 March she transfers late afternoon to the OPT to O/N until Sunday.

5,000+ Club

Sydney Ports have her going to wharf 5 and White Bay so she must fit under the Harbour Bridge

Debsta

Maybe they're going to do it at low tide

When the OP originally posted in another thread about her ship being at Wharf 5 I was surprised

when we cruised on the Pacific Dawn years ago we were informed the captain lowers the mast at the last port so they could get under the harbour bridge, maybe this the same thing?

Now heres a thought...

When we sailed on QM2 we were told Glebe Island.

Thats where we checked in and were then taken to the ship at Garden Island.

Perhaps , passengers will be checking in at Wharf 5,or Whites Bay and then be taken to the ship moored in the harbour somewhere?

NSWP

We sailed under SHB on Regal Princess (now Pacific Dawn) so Pacific Dawn can ! Also sailed under on Sun Princess and Pacific Princess. However last cruise, Arcadia - Vista Class ship, we did not have to go under the bridge, we had 'pole position' Overseas Passenger Terminal.

Yeah, I'd say she'll dock at Garden Island or drop anchor and tender passengers to Wharf 5 Barangaroo. That's what happened when my parents sailed on QM2 and it said docking at Wharf 5.

Time will tell....

but from memory one of the Celebrity ships was listed as Barangaroo one year , and all the passengers were ferried to the ship , which was tied up at Athol Buoy.

I have just spoken to Holland America and they were very helpful and told me that the Oosterdam would only possibly get under the bridge in low tide.

The consultant actually rang me back and said that the allocation of berths is upto the Port Authority, and that it can even change on the day when the pilot boards the ship.

He informed me that the ship would probably berth at the OPT or possibly Garden Island (which clarification is still been sort about which ships will berth there).

He said there is extra ships arriving in Sydney this year. Which is obviously causing a lot of juggling by the Port Authority.

Queen Mary II docked at the Overseas passenger terminal in March this year.

I think it is BS about it fitting under the bridge. The reason being is that I know for certain that Orinana has a height from waterline to funnel tip of 54.84m and 49.98m to top of foremast which makes it too tall to fit under the harbour bridge. The Oosterdam is taller than Oriana. To begin with the Oosterdam has one extra passenger deck above Oriana. It certainly does not have a short funnel and mast and my guess is that the Oosterdam is taller than Oriana a ship that we know for certain is too tall to fit under the bridge at 54.84m.

Even with these figures it make it highly unlikely it will fit under the bridge. The ship will enter Sydney harbour in need of fuel and water and is likely to be high in the water. It is not coming in fully laden with tanks to the brim and weighed down. With the bridge clearance of 49m it certainly will not fit under.

Holiday Sharing

The Sydney Ports website does not list any ship berthing at the OPT on January 2nd, so hopefully the Oosterdam will berth there.

Disembarking by tender would be a hassle.

You are right, sorry, (I did not read the departure date of that ship).

Thank you for posting this information.   Where is Garden Island in relation to the OPT?

It's a couple of inlets around the coast, beside Woolloomooloo. A very nice location, but not generally available for cruise ships.

We sailed under the bridge a few years back on the Superstar Leo (Star Cruises). I remember the captain saying we had a half hr corridor to get under/through, and the clearance was approx 1m.....I swear it looked like the funnel was scraping....so exciting with everyone onboard going "Whoa" at the same time. In the middle, they blasted the horn, smoke and all, and we all had a huge laugh re the cars above. Oh, that was a great cruise, great ship!

How big a ship is the Superstar Leo.

Imagine what it would have been like if you were climbing the bridge when it went under and the smoke.

Leanne, I think it is called the Norwegian Spirit now. It is 76800gt, approx 2000 passengers with capability of 2800 passengers, 879ft long, 14 decks....and the layout/fittings etc are stunning. I can send you a copy of our dvd if you want, just email me. The dining was via choice of numerous restaurants ie chinese, japanese, steakhouse, french, normal formal, buffet etc. Best shows I have seen yet on the seas. The list goes on.....

Its a similar size to the Sun class operated by Princess. Exactly the same number of decks out of the water. The funnel height would have to be short like the Sun class.

P&O’s latest ship, Pacific Adventure, sails into Sydney but Queen’s death means celebrations will have to wait

The Pacific Adventure arrived in Sydney this morning to somber weather, flags flying at half mast and scaled back celebrations after the death of Her Majesty The Queen last night.

Her arrival means the entire P&O Cruises Australia fleet of three ships has now returned home to resume cruising in Australia.

Pacific Adventure sailed through the Heads this morning on her way initially to the Overseas Passenger Terminal, and P&O announced celebrations were scaled back as a mark of respect following the death of Her Majesty.

Pacific Adventure is one of the tallest ships to ever sail under the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Just two metres separates her mast from the top of the famous steel spans when she sailed to White Bay later.

Screen Shot 2022 09 09 at 9.55.09 am

Pacific Adventure has undergone a transformation and will be offering its guests renovated bars and dining spaces including the Adventure Hotel, 400 Gradi, Luke’s and a new Lobby precinct which are all in keeping with P&O’s contemporary look and feel.

The ship has seen the addition of the first of its kind ‘Twin Racer’ waterslides,  which means you can race against the clock and challenge your family, friends, and new-found friends on our Twin Racer Waterslides.

While at berth, crew will incrementally board the ship each day and supplies will be loaded onto the vessel. Vessel staff and contractors will also conduct maintenance tasks on and around the ship in preparation for its return to service.

Pacific Adventure  will overnight at the OPT  before relocating on Saturday morning to White Bay Cruise Terminal in Rozelle, which requires her to pass under the Bridge.

For those wanting to track her journey into Sydney Harbour, these are the estimated arrival times for the ship.

  • 9:30am – Enter Sydney Heads
  • 10:00am – Pass by Bradley’s Head
  • 10:15am – Pass by Fort Denison
  • 10:20am – Pass by Sydney Opera House
  • 10:30am – Arrive at the Overseas Passenger Terminal at Circular Quay (OPT)

Previously the Golden Princess, the ship can house 2,600 guests across its 12 decks.

Booked a cruise from Sydney ? Sydney’s Cruise Ship Terminals are just a hop, skip and jump away from the best the city has to offer.

Sydney has two dedicated cruise ship terminals: the Sydney Overseas Passenger Terminal and the White Bay Cruise Terminal. The Sydney Overseas Passenger Terminal is located in Circular Quay, the hub of the city, while the White Bay Cruise Terminal is a little further from the city and is designed for mid-sized ships – ones that can pass under the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Getting to and from

If you’re leaving or arriving at the Overseas Passenger Terminal Pier in Circular Quay , you’re spoilt for choice with transport options. In Circular Quay, you'll find trains (City Rail), buses, taxis and the City Ferries to take you almost anywhere in and around the city.

Sydney’s Kingsford International Airport is 13 kilometres from the terminal, which is about 30 minutes in a taxi. But be sure to allow enough time for traffic, especially at peak commuting times. You can be dropped off and picked up via George Street and Argyle Street, but there’s no short or long-term parking at the terminal itself.

The White Bay Cruise Terminal at Rozelle is only 6 kilometres from the centre of Sydney and 17 kilometres from the airport. There is short-term parking and access to the terminal via James Craig Road.

What you'll find at the terminals

Sydney’s Overseas Passenger Terminal has an ATM, passenger lifts, escalators and toilets. While there are no foreign exchange and post facilities, these are easily found in Circular Quay.

Sydney’s White Bay Cruise Terminal has toilets, public payphones, an ATM and a cafe. However, there is no post office, foreign exchange office, or Wi-Fi access.

While neither terminal offers duty free shopping, your cruise ship will undoubtedly have plenty for you to enjoy. Both cruise terminals have wheelchair access to the ships and terminal.

Spend a few hours in Sydney

Sydney is Australia’s first and biggest city, and it’s jaw dropping – so plan to stay for a couple of days before or after your cruise. If you only have a few hours to spare, explore the shops, cafes and galleries around the bustling harbour and nearby historic Rocks precinct,

Sydney is known for its fresh seafood, so dine al fresco at one of the many shoreline restaurants and watch the yachts, catamarans and tall ships jostle with the colourful ferries. Or take to the water yourself on a jet boat adrenaline ride or Sydney Explorer “Hop on Hop off” Harbour Cruise.

Got more time? Explore further afield

If you've got more time (ideally a day or two), why not explore further afield? Kids will love a visit to the local Taronga Zoo to meet the wombats, echidnas and koalas, or take them to the child-friendly Manly Beach for a gelato. Both are within easy reach of Circular Quay by ferry.

Take a walk in the Royal Botanic Gardens, which are filled with native plants and interesting wildlife, including white sulphur-crested cockatoos. The nearby Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) is the perfect place to spend a cultural afternoon and has free entry.

For the more adventurous, there’s always a scenic flight around the harbour or along the Pacific coastline. Seaplanes leave from Rose Bay, a short ferry ride away, and are a great way to begin your holiday in style!

Sydney cruise port

Region Australia - New Zealand - Pacific Ocean Islands

Local Time 2024-05-20 14:32

Port Sydney cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Sydney, NSW Australia. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Sydney Cruise Port is the busiest Australian homeport and ship travel destination. Sydney Harbour itself is a scenic destination with a lot of boat tours. The city's best-known attractions are the futuristic-designed Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The 1932-opened arch bridge carries all the traffic (rail, vehicles, bicycles, pedestrian) between the CBD (city's central business district) and North Shore's suburbs.

The cruise industry is Australia's fastest-growing economic sector with worth ~AUD 5 billion to the NSW alone. It supports over 20,000 local jobs. ISeason 2015-2016 statistics showed 325 cruise ship visits to NSW.

Port Sydney NSW

All Sydney's seaport facilities are managed by Sydney Ports Corporation - an NSW Government-owned company also responsible for the seaport's development and facilities within Sydney Metro. Two more (smaller) ports are in Eden and Yamba.

In April 2013, the NSW Government announced granted a 99-year lease (until 2112) to the NSW Ports Consortium for AUD 4,31 billion. The lease was granted together with a lease for Port Kembla for AUD 760 million. Of the sale proceeds, over AUD 2 billion were allocated for road infrastructure projects.

Under Sydney Ports Corporation management are the following ports:

  • Port Jackson (Sydney Harbour) with 11 berths serving dry and liquid bulk carriers, general cargo ships, cruise terminal (Overseas Passenger Terminal at Circular Quay).
  • Port Botany (Botany Bay, approx 13 km / 8 mi south of city's central business district) has a terminal for liquid bulk carriers, a storage facility and 2 container terminals.
  • Port Enfield (Logistics Centre) has a freight railway connecting it with Port Botany.
  • Port St Peters houses the Cooks River Rail Depot and a Container Park.
  • Since 2011, Sydney Ports Corporation also manages Port Eden and Port Yamba.

On April 9, 2018, the new China-built gantry crane (by ZPMC / "Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries") was delivered at Sydney Container Terminal. Same ZPMC cranes (serving large container ships ) were also delivered and installed in Brisbane (one, in April) and Melbourne (two, in March).

  • The equipment (a total of 9 gantry cranes) was ordered by DP World Australia (Australia's main and largest container port and supply chain operator) to serve the country's container terminals. By this USD 180 million project were also delivered 20x straddle trucks, 4x RTGs (rubber-tyred gantry cranes), 38x forklifts (industrial trucks).
  • Each of the 9x ZPMC cranes costs USD 14 million, has rated capacity 65 tons (under spreader) and 75 tons (under heavy lift beam), rail gauge 25,3 m, above rail hoist height 38 m, hoist speed 90 m per min (loaded) and 180 m / min (unloaded).

Sydney NSW cruise port

The port's cruise schedule has ships operating on Cruises to Nowhere , roundtrip itineraries to ports in Queensland, Tasmania, New Zealand and South Pacific Islands (New Caledonia, Fiji, Vanuatu). Longer (repositioning) cruises go to ports in Asia (some all the way to China and Japan) and North America (via Honolulu Hawaii ).

On November 27, 2015, in Sydney Harbour met two of the largest Australia-homeported cruise ships - RCI Royal Caribbean 's vessels Explorer of the Seas and Voyager of the Seas , carrying over 10,000 passengers and crew. The Explorer was finishing a 16-night Australia and New Zealand itinerary from Fremantle-Perth , while the Voyager started a 7-night itinerary to Melbourne . Both ships are from RCI's Voyager-class series, with gross tonnage 138,194 tons and LOA length 311 m (1020 ft), For season 2015-2016, RCI had all 4 ships - plus the couple Radiance of the Seas (homeport Sydney) and Legend of the Seas (homeport Brisbane, currently operates as Marella Discovery 2 for Marella UK) . With this fleet, Royal Caribbean made a total investment of over USD 280 million in the Australian market.

In 2017, RCI extended the second season (2017-2018) of the ever largest Australia-homeported ship - Ovation of the Seas - by additional 6 cruises or 5 weeks homeporting in Sydney. Ovation was scheduled to make a total of 9 itineraries during the liner's 2nd Sydney-based season (departures November 2017 through February 2018). The newly added roundtrips in 2018 were: 8-night "South Pacific" (departure February 18), 10-night to New Zealand (departures February 26, March 13), 5-night to Tasmania (departure March 8), 3-night sampler Cruise to Nowhere (departure March 23) and the 14-night repositioning cruise to Singapore (departure March 26). The mega liner arrived for the first time in Sydney on December 15, 2016. and was scheduled to leave the homeport on January 23, 2017 and return to China. However, as the large cruise ship had exceeded all the Royal Caribbean Australia's expectations, they decided to add the 4 extra itineraries to meet the market's demand.

For season 2017-2018, Australia's fastest-growing tourism sector suffered a blow with major consequences for NSW's economy as cruise shipping companies started to bypass Port Sydney in favour of Melbourne , Brisbane , Auckland New Zealand and even further (homeporting in Asia instead). The decision for ship re-deploynment was due to Sydney Harbour's Overseas Passenger Terminal incapacity to berth larger vessels.

For season 2017-2018, Australia's 2nd biggest cruise shipping company Royal Caribbean redeployed Voyager of the Seas to Singapore and China for year-round turnaround operations. RCI's ship Radiance of the Seas was also re-scheduled to not stop in Sydney, replacing the port of call with Melbourne and New Zealand. With just Voyager OTS, Port Sydney lost around 65,000 guests a year, which was estimated at approx AUD 32 million in passenger spending.

Australia's biggest cruise shipping company - Carnival Australia , represents a group of 7 brands on the market, the largest of which are P&O Cruises and Princess Cruises . A Carnival also struggles to berth in Sydney NSW, the company moved some of its vessels to Brisbane and Melbourne. For 2018, Carnival Legend had scheduled all 10 itineraries leaving roundtrip from Melbourne. Another Carnival Corporation -owned company - Cunard , was willing to homeport the ship Queen Elizabeth in Sydney for a record -2 month-long Australian season (February through April 2019) - Cunard's ever longest season in Australia. However, while the Cunard's preference was to homeport the ship in Sydney, due to unavailable berths, 3 of the pre-scheduled itineraries were changed for roundtrips from Melbourne.

  • Among the suggested solutions for this crisis was for cruise ships to share access to Garden Island with the Royal Australian Navy. Previously, Royal Caribbean (RCCL) was willing to invest tens of millions of dollars in building a new cruise terminal in Botany Bay.
  • Season 2017-2018 was the cruise port's record year with scheduled a total of 90 ship visits and over 130,000 passengers and crew. The estimated economic impact was around AUD 30 million.

In March 2022, the NSW government announced plans to upgrade Sydney Harbour with shore-power capabilities . The technology was scheduled to be installed at the facilities White Bay Cruise Terminal and Glebe Island and the facilities to be ready and operational in 2024. For this project wee allocated $60+ million, including for infrastructure upgrades. Shoreside power systems allow the berthed vessels to turn off their diesel engines and use the city grid's electricity for all onboard operations and hotel services.

Sydney cruise terminal

Sydney Harbour (port locode AUSYD) is one of the top cruise ports in the world. It is located on the eastern Australian coast with the Blue Mountains on the west.

Sydney Harbour (aka Port Jackson) has attracted visitors, settlers, business men and traders for a long time. The city of Sydney has a population of more than 4 million and it is the biggest Ozzie city. The harbor has two cruise terminals – the White Bay and the Overseas Passenger Terminal. Three cruise ships can anchor at the same time at Sydney Cruise port terminals.

(NEW) Yarra Bay Cruise Terminal

For 2020 was planned to start the construction works for a new passenger terminal at Yarra Bay (east of Sydney Harbour Bridge). However, these plans were temporary suspended (for 18 months) due to the global Coronavirus pandemic. The health crisis seriously impacted Australia (Sydney mostly) and resulted in worldwide shutdown of all cruise shipping operations.

The Yarra Bay project is an initiative of RCCL-Royal Caribbean, with co-funding from the NSW Government.

White Bay Cruise Terminal

White Bay cruise terminal operates since 2013. It is transformed ro-ro (grain) terminal. The Sydney cruise port terminal is open and large, capable to process more than 2000 tourists. Next to White Bay there is a drop off areas and a short time park zone. The Sydney cruise port terminal can accommodate two vessels at the same time – at pier 4 and pier 5. White Bay is close to the center of Sydney and close to Sydney Harbour Bridge. That makes it unavailable for the biggest cruise vessels due to under Sydney Harbour Bridge height restrictions.

Overseas Passenger Terminal

The second Sydney Cruise port terminal is situated at the Circular Quay. It is very close to main sights in Sydney, just across the Opera House. The building is a modern one with a lot of facilities.

The Overseas Passenger Terminal offers also a breathtaking Sydney Harbour view. The terminal serves larger cruise ships.

The NSW's capital city Sydney is among the high-ranked for quality of life cities and one of the most beautiful vacation travel destinations to visit, so try not to miss:

  • The Rocks: historical area with cafes, bars, shops, restaurants and galleries. Explore the Campbells Storehouse, Susannah Place, the Merchants House and Cadman’s Cottage. Next to Circular Quay. Is the Rocks area.
  • Sydney Opera House: located on the Sydney Harbor at Bennelong Point. Jørn Utzon is the designer of this world architectural wonder. Its opening was in 1973. It is near the Overseas Passenger Terminal and there you can enjoy amazing opera or ballet performances.
  • Royal Botanic Gardens: a green oasis located between the busy downtown and the blue ocean.
  • Sydney Harbour Bridge: see the Pylon Lookout or participate in the Sydney Harbour Bridge climb.
  • Bondi Beach is great for surfing. Enjoy that beautiful white-sand beach just 45 min away from Circular Quay (by bus 380).

James Craig

James Craig

James Craig is an iconic Sydney attraction and one of the most popular destinations for visitors looking for a unique maritime experience.

As the only Tall Ship from the 19th Century, it is not difficult to see why this majestic vessel is an integral part of the city’s tourism industry.

James Craig Tall Ship 1874 Heritage Fleet Cruise, Sydney NSW

Its restoration allowed the vessel to be in full sailing condition, earning it the prestigious Maritime Medal. The process of restoration took close to 40 years after the vessel was retrieved from Recherche Bay in Tasmania.

One of the most beautiful things about this stunning vessel is that it is open to the public so that visitors can enjoy an experience like no other. With a capacity of 80 passengers, there is no excuse not to enjoy this authentic symbol of rich heritage preservation.

The adventure starts the moment James Craig departs from the berth at Pyrmont . During the cruise, visitors get the chance to soak in the panoramic sights of the harbour , as well as other icons that Sydney is best known for. Look for stunning views of the Opera House and the majestic Harbour Bridge . As the ship cruises further down the harbour, the city’s skyline seems to fade in the distance as it makes its way to the Sydney Heads.

Passengers can help the crew set the sails or unwind onboard. For those who would love to take the thrill a notch higher, nothing compares to the Mast Climb, an adrenaline-packed activity that allows you to be 10 metres above the ship’s deck.

Take a tour of James Craig and walk back to the late 19th century for the experience of a lifetime. Make online bookings for either an afternoon adventure or a more immersive experience, such as a full-day sailing experience.

The James Craig berth is at Wharf 7, 58 Pirrama Road, Pyrmont. Parking is available at Harbourside Car Park, Murray Street.

Why book a dinner cruise with Harbourside?

Sydney life started and quickly grew around one of the most beautiful natural harbours in the world. Stretching along 240kms of shoreline, the harbour today is a major gateway to the rest of Sydney and it’s surrounding suburbs. The harbour buzzes with ferries, cruise ships, yachts, and boats of all shapes and sizes, from sun up to sun down every single day.

The harbour is bursting with natural beauty, which is situated right alongside jaw dropping engineering, architecture, and famous landmarks. Darling Harbour and Circular Quay are great places to walk around to see these sights, but the very best way to see all of these amazing landmarks is to book a boat cruise and get yourself out on the sparkling blue waters. You can sit back, relax, and take in views from both inside and outside the vessel. We have entertainment and a delicious meal prepared by our on-board chef and our friendly staff will ensure your glass is full with a fully stocked bar with a range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.

Do you have a couple of hours to spare in the afternoon and wish to see Sydney Harbour and its iconic landmarks aboard a 1850's style timber tall ship. Southern Swan regularly crossed the North Sea as a grain carrier between Denmark and Greenland for the Tuborg Beer Company until 1969. With ice being a constant hazard in these far northern waters, the ship's bow was strengthened during the initial construction to cope with any light ice work. She was purchased in 1969 as a private vessel and extensively refitted to make extensive ocean voyages, including service as a sail training vessel with the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets. She participated in the 1982 Tall Ships Race from Philadelphia to Portugal. In 1986 after appearing at the World Expo in Vancouver, Southern Swan sailed to England to join the Australian Bicentennial First Fleet Re-Enactment for the historic voyage to Sydney. “Southern Swan’s original name was ‘Mathilde’, then ‘Pacific’ [1926], then ‘H C Andersen’ [1930], then 'Svanen’ [1938], and finally ‘Southern Swan’ [2008].
