Scarborough, Tobago
* Coming Soon
Cruises to Trinidad and Tobago unlock some of the most unique travel experiences in the Caribbean. By Tobago standards, Scarborough is the “big city,” where a full third of the island lives. But the island’s small overall population means that the capital city still has that laid-back vibe and small-town charm. And charming local flavor is absolutely what you’ll find on cruises to Trinidad and Tobago, the birthplace of limbo, calypso and chutney! When Tobago isn’t sitting back simply being delicious, it can often be found showing off great natural attractions like rainforests, shorelines or national parks.

Carnival cruise comes to T&T in 2023

Island Sea Fest officially announced a cruise geared specifically towards Trinidad and Tobago’s Carnival in 2023. The partnership with the Royal Caribbean International, which was announced on July 19, will be for an 11-night cruise, five of which it will be docked in Port-of-Spain at the height of Carnival activity.
The cruise’s itinerary would see the passengers depart San Juan, Puerto Rico, on Wednesday February 15, 2023 and arrive in Trinidad on Carnival Thursday February 16. From there patrons will partake in the festivities of Carnival for the next five nights in Trinidad serving as a floating hotel in the harbour.
After leaving Trinidad at midnight on Carnival Tuesday the cruise is set for stops in Tobago, Barbados, and St Lucia before returning to San Juan (Sunday, February 26, 2023).
Spokesperson for the cruise Roger McGregor told Guardian that the idea for the cruise had been formed more than seven years ago, but it ultimately did not get the go ahead until December last year when international security officials for the cruise lines finally granted clearance.
“I first thought about this in 2014 as I was doing another themed cruise and I really wanted it to represent the Caribbean and the culture in which I’m from and all of my ancestors. And I needed it to be around an iconic event and the first thing that came to my mind was Trinidad Carnival. The largest Carnival in the world,”
McGregor said he took his idea to the Tourism Development Company back then and continued liaising the Ministry of Culture since, including incumbent Minister of Tourism Randall Mitchell about potentially creating a hotel on the seas for the festival.
Minister Mitchell confirmed to Guardian Media that he had been in contact with the organisers.
McGregor said the decision to hold the first cruise in 2023, was due to the intense planning required for the event and not because he was unsure there would be a Carnival in 2022.
“To do a themed cruise, it’s 16 months of planning. So, it’s not something that you can do in two months or three months or four months anyway. So if I look at 16 months from December (2020), that’s already taking me toward the end of 2022, to which it would have passed Carnival in 2022,” he said.
The announcement of the cruise, however, was guided by the pandemic, as McGregor had to be sure cruise lines had resumed activity safely before launching.
He said the cruise would be a boost as it not only provided additional accommodation for visitors, but also an alternative measure in terms of transport to come to the event at perhaps a lower price than usually seen at the height of the season.
The cruise features an all-inclusive onboard pricing structure which includes: base cruise fare, taxes, fees, gratuities, beverages, meals, onboard parties, WIFI, and basic travel insurance.

Cruise to Port of Spain, Trinidad
Port of spain shore excursions, amazing experiences coming soon., sorry, there are no excursions for this port at this moment., things to do in port of spain.
Views around Fort George down to Port of Spain
This centuries-old fort offers beautiful views of the Gulf of Paria. It’s home to original cannons and dungeons, as well as objects dating back to the 1800s, when the fort was build. Though the fort never saw military action, it’s a great place to visit for a feel of the island’s British history.
CAPTIVATING CARONI
Birds in the Caroni Swamp in Trinidad & Tobago
On the west coast of Trinidad, you’ll find the Caroni Wetlands. It’s the second largest mangrove wetland in Trinidad and Tobago, and it offers endless adventures for outdoor enthusiasts. The best way to experience this natural wonder is on a boat tour through the swamp’s winding waterways and open lagoons.
BEACH BREAK
Maracas Beach is one of the prettiest beaches in Trinidad. It’s located on the north coast of the island, about half an hour from Port of Spain. Protected by a deep bay, its waters are calm and sparkling, its shore lined with gently swaying coconut trees. Make sure to pass by the Maracas Lookout for stunning views.
LOCAL CUISINE
Traditional Trinidadian cuisine is a fusion of different flavors — from West African and Creole to Latin American, Indian, and south Asian. One of the most popular street food dishes you’ll find here is Bake and Shark, a meal of fried flatbread, shark meat, condiments and coleslaw, all tucked into a tasty sandwich. You can also sub the shark for any other local fish.
Trinidad is home to lots of talented local craftsmen. Some of the best cocoa in the world comes from Trinidad, making artisan chocolates a popular gifts. Handcrafted jewelry made from forest seeds and beads also makes for a great souvenir. And if you love music, pick up a mini version of a steel pan — the island’s national instrument.

Port of Spain – Trinidad & Tobago
Cruise Port Guide Port of Spain – Trinidad & Tobago: docked
The terminal building is about a 15 minute walk from the city centre. You simply follow the promenade.
There will be lots of taxis waiting at the cruise terminal. Taxis in Port of Spain are unmetered and rates are not set by the government. Be sure to make a price agreement before you step into the taxi and please mention if the amount is in Trinidad dollars or US dollars. Often taxi drivers are trained tour guides and are very suitable to give a tour of their island.
Maxitaxis are minivans that operate regular routes driving in specific zones. Recognise them by the coloured stripe on the side of their white van. They are lower priced than taxis. Maxitaxis are shared taxis that have a fixed route. Pay 2 to 4 dollars and get dropped off at any spot along the way. The colour of the stripe indicates the fixed route of the van. • Yellow Band or Route 1 Maxi Taxis cover the western end of the island including Chaguaramas, Petit Valley and Diego Martin. The hub for this service is based in a fenced compound at the corner of St Vincent Street and South Quay, Port of Spain. Fares range from TT$3 to TT$10 • Red Band or Route 2 Maxi Taxis travel the eastern route from Port of Spain to as far east as Sangre Grande. The hub is based at City Gate, South Quay, Port of Spain and fares range from TT$3 to TT$8 • Green Band Maxi Taxis ply the Port of Spain to Chaguanas route including Curepe to Chaguanas in Central Trinidad and as far as San Fernando in twelve seater Maxi Taxi
Public transportation
We don’t think public transportation is the best way to get around. If you would like to know more about the bus lines visit: http://www.gotrinidadandtobago.com/system/creatives/700/original/1PTSC_Schedules.pdf or on http://www.ptsc.co.tt/ptsc-downloads.html See the PTSC bus station marked on the map above.
Trinidad does not have a lot of beaches. If you would like to spend a day on the beach we could recommend Maracas Bay. This is about a 40 minute drive from port.
Where’s the wifi?
There is wi-fi available in the terminal.

Trinidad: tourist information
The twin islands of Trinidad and Tobago are the Caribbean's odd couple. Trinidad is a densely populated, thriving island with a cosmopolitan population and strong regional influence. It's famous for hosting the loudest, wildest and most popular Carnival in the Caribbean. In contrast, 'little sister' Tobago is relaxed, slow-paced and largely undeveloped. There are claims that Daniel Defoe had Tobago in mind when he wrote Robinson Crusoe, and travelers who enjoy its beaches, reefs and birdlife still tend to think of the island as the last undiscovered gem in the Caribbean.

Cruises from/to Port of Spain, Trinidad
Port of spain, trinidad cruise port.
- Built in 1804 for defense and restored in the 1960s, Fort George is now a museum that overlooks the port. It's also a signal station for ships, so the view is remarkable. There are also some cannons and dungeons to explore.
- Once a sugar cane plantation, Queen's Park Savannah is now a public recreation area where locals come to walk, play ball, and attend concerts. Tourists may also want to see the Magnificent Seven; early 20th century mansions in the process of being restored to former glory.
- One of the most religious spots in Trinidad is the Dattatreya Temple and 85-foot-high Hanuman murthi (statue). The temple was built in the South Indian style of architecture and once you are done being wowed by the brilliant colors, you may just feel a bit of inner peace.
- If you desire a beach, Maracas Bay is the closest to the city, around 14 miles north. The beach has clean, white sands and palm trees for shade. One of the most popular draws for food are the Bake & Shark stands (yes, there are fried shark sandwiches available which get rave reviews). The views on the way to the bay are also worth the drive.

Cruise ships dock in the capital, Port of Spain, at the Cruise Ship Terminal Complex of Port of Spain where disembarking passengers are greeted by locals dancing in dazzling Carnival costumes, singing calypso or playing the steel pan. The cruise terminal houses a Tourism Information Office, duty-free stores, clothing boutiques and souvenir shops. Immediately outside the terminal is a craft market and you can also find taxis offering island tours. If you want to explore on your own, Port of Spain's shopping and financial district is just 15 minutes' walk away.
For Safety: Walk in groups if possible. Use the same caution you would use visiting any large city. Don't carry large sums of cash, don't walk down dark streets, don't walk across a park at midnight. Stay on the well beaten track and enjoy the things that your relatives and friends will guide you towards.

Sightseeing:
Lying nine miles off the coast of Venezuela, Trinidad is a Caribbean paradise and the southernmost link in the Antillean chain of islands. Trinidad is part of the two-island nation known as Trinidad & Tobago. Yet, although these two islands are linked in their government and geographical proximity, they are quite dissimilar.
Trinidad's recorded history is thousands of years old, but the region became known to Europeans in the 15th century, when Columbus sailed around its southern bay. Sighting three large mountain peaks on the island, he named the land La Trinidad, in reverence to the Holy Trinity. In 1797, the British Empire captured Trinidad from the Spanish, ending more than three hundred years of Spanish rule.
In more modern times, Trinidad has grown into a major tourist destination in part because of its success in the oil industry. The booming petroleum business in the area made Trinidad into an ideal location for upscale business travelers. Therefore, an entire industry unfolded which catered to these foreign travelers. Today, Trinidad remains a prosperous island that welcomes cruise ships from all over the world to dock at its picturesque capital, Port-of-Spain .
Port-of-Spain is a cultural and visual highlight of any cruise excursion. A city of just over fifty thousand, it is known throughout the world for its vibrant and colorful festivals, including the annual Carnival celebration. It is a great melting pot of cultures, featuring prominent African, European, Indian, and Asian dining, architecture, and language.
In and around the Port-of-Spain and Trinidad itself, you will be treated to a land that has been spared from the massive over-development that has troubled other notable ports of call. Instead, you will find ample beaches that have remained in their pristine states, casual and elegant dining in friendly local restaurants, and a great assortment of activities and events that will allow you and your family to explore this magical island and all it has to offer.
Tours Excursions Transportation:
All official taxis have registration 'H'. Hiring a private taxi is much more expensive but gives the freedom to go where you like. Though there are fixed rates for certain journeys, it is best to establish this before you start your journey.
Remember $1.00 U.S = $6.30TT but in the tourism industry they round it off to $1,00 = $6.00 flat. Always ask the taxi what currency is he quoting you.
Public transportation consists of MaxiTaxis (shared taxis) and Buses (not recommended).
It pays to compare your cruise line tours here .
Traffic is horrendous, do no rent a car.
Nearby Places:
Maracas Beach is a beach on the island of Trinidad. It is located on the north side of the island, an hour's mountainous drive from the capital city of Port of Spain. The drive to get there goes up and over The Northern Range rainforest area with most drivers stopping at the Maracas Lookout, about a mile before hitting the beach area.
Shopping and Food
Trinidad continues to be a major shopping center in the Caribbean, attracting shoppers from all over the region and neighboring Latin American countries.
Shopping options are pretty extensive, with bargain shopping in downtown Port of Spain, San Fernando, Chaguanas, Arima, Tunapuna and main streets in other districts.
The currency on Trinidad and Tobago is the Trinidad and Tobago dollar, also known as the TT (pronounced teetee). US dollars are also widely accepted. Visa and Mastercard credit cards are accepted at many stores. American Express, Diners' Club, Discover, JCB and others are only accepted in a few places.
ATM (ABM) cards using Cirrus and Plus networks will work in local ATMs and will allow you to make withdrawals in TT dollars converted to your home currency.
