10 Best Greece Cruises, According to Travel Experts

These are the best Greece cruises for island hopping with ease.

With its stunning beaches, rich history, iconic landmarks, and delectable cuisine, a trip to Greece is always a great idea. However, since the nation is home to more than 6,000 islands — some of which are only accessible by boat — your best bet is to explore via cruise. Just take it from Rob Clabbers, Travel + Leisure A-List travel advisor and Q Cruise + Travel founder, who tells T+L that “Greece and the Greek isles are just the perfect destinations to explore by ship” since “a cruise allows you to see more islands and gives you a unique vantage point.” Several of the best Greece cruises also include visits to neighboring countries like Turkey and Italy, for example, which allow travelers to experience several cultures and countries in one action-packed trip. Intrigued? We don’t blame you: Ahead, check out our favorite Greece cruises for every type of traveler, along with itinerary recommendations and expert insight.

Windstar Cruises

Courtesy of Windstar

According to Clabbers, this small luxury cruise line is perfect for those who prefer “a smaller, more casual yacht-style experience.” Per the pro, the onboard vibes are best described as “upscale, but not stuffy or over-the-top.” It’s also worth noting that “each ship offers a water sports platform with kayaks, water trampolines, stand-up paddling, snorkel gear, floating carpets, and other ‘toys’ that are deployed (weather and location permitting, of course) at least once on most Greek itineraries.”

Itinerary: While you can’t go wrong with any of Windstar’s Greece itineraries, Clabbers is quick to call out the popular Treasures of the Greek Isles voyage, which sets sail each week from May through October. Passengers can visit beloved ports of call like Mykonos and Santorini, along with “lesser-known (and less-crowded!) places like Monemvasia and Patmos.” As part of the experience, guests have the unique opportunity to feast among the ruins in neighboring Turkey as part of the line’s complimentary Evening in Ephesus “after-hours” event, which, per Clabbers, features a decadent five-course dinner accompanied by a chamber orchestra. Speaking of culinary offerings, it’s worth mentioning that Windstar is the official cruise line partner of the esteemed James Beard Foundation, which means you can expect some of the top eats at sea.

Explora Journeys

Courtesy of Explora Cruises

“A new entrant in the luxury travel industry, Explora Journeys offers all the style and comfort of a modern European luxury resort property on its 922-guest yacht-inspired Explora I and, launching later this year, Explora II, ” explains Clabbers. The line has taken the industry by storm, doing away with cliche cruise staples like main dining rooms, large buffets, and notoriously small staterooms. Instead, says Clabbers, guests can choose from a selection of “excellent restaurants that other companies would call specialty restaurants,” as well as “four swimming pools, each with their own vibe,” and all-suite accommodations, some of which boast private plunge pools. Per the pro, it’s worth noting that “Explora Journeys is the first luxury line that offers a dedicated youth activity program and facility year-round;” as such, it’s an excellent option for multi-generational families looking to cruise Greece in style.

Itinerary: Sailing round-trip from Athens, the aptly named eight-night A Journey from Athens to Athens itinerary includes a mix of popular ports like Mykonos and Santorini, along with hidden-gem locales like Syros, which is famous for its neoclassical architecture, a buzzy main town, and (essentially) crowd-free beaches. The cruise also visits the serene resort town of Marmaris in Turkey before heading to its final port of call, Kos , a gorgeous Greek island known for its sandy beaches, white-washed buildings, and historical sites.

Celebrity Cruises

Courtesy of Celebrity Cruises

According to Clabbers, " Celebrity Cruises was launched by a Greek shipping family," so the line has deep ties to — and many officers who hail from — the country. What’s more, he says, "When you visit Greece, they are taking you to their homeland, and it shows in their passion and love of the Hellenic nation." The line offers a range of larger ships and, thus, more options between accommodations (from economical inside rooms to luxurious suites in The Retreat), itineraries, restaurants, and entertainment; as such, Celebrity is "a great option for adults and families who like more activities on their ship."

Itinerary: The nine-night Best Of Greece itinerary cruises round-trip from Athens on select dates from May to October and takes place aboard the 2,170-passenger Celebrity Infinity , which Clabbers described as one of the line’s “smaller and more seasoned ships.” The first port of call is Santorini, followed by Ephesus in Turkey and Mykonos. “Additionally,” says Clabbers, " Infinity   travels to Volos and Thessaloniki, ports that are not typically visited by large ships.” Kavala, located in the northern part of the country, serves as the final port of call before heading back to Athens. Here, cruisers can enjoy a mix of history, culture, and architecture — plus some seriously stunning landscapes (from lagoons and lakes to wetlands and beaches) along with lush flora and fauna.

Courtesy of Silversea cruises

Silversea offers a variety of Greece cruise itineraries, and it’s one of few truly luxe all-inclusive cruise lines. Per Clabbers, the 596-passenger Silver Moon offers all-suite accommodations and a classic small-ship feel — complete with excellent meals, beverages, and shore excursions all included in your cruise fare. Speaking of the latter, he says, “The inclusion of shore excursions also makes it easy to dive deeper into Greek culture and culinary experiences.”

Itinerary: While you can’t go wrong with any of Silversea’s Greek itineraries, Clabbers especially recommends the seven-night Athens to Athens cruise, which “calls on highlights, but adds places like Souda Bay in Crete, Nafplion, Patmos, and Rhodes ,” where he recommends visiting the “temple ruins at Lindos, with views over the Mediterranean, and then walk in the footsteps of the Crusaders in the old town.” The cruise also stops in Nafplion, which, despite its romantic seaside setting and lovely beaches, is yet to be uncovered by most American travelers — for now, at least.

Variety Cruises

According to T+L A-list travel advisor and small ship specialist Mary Curry , this local Greek cruise line offers its own fleet of yachts, most carrying fewer than 50 passengers. Since the ships are so small, says Curry, “you can travel a bit further off the beaten path.” Variety offers a handful of Greece itineraries, including specially themed hiking and wine cruises.

Itinerary: Travelers craving a true off-the-beaten-path experience can book the seven-night Unexplored Greece voyage, which sails round-trip from Athens. The first port of call is Ikira, a tiny island known for its hot springs that also happens to be one of the world’s Blue Zones. Then, it’s off to Patmos, known for its fascinating history and unspoiled beaches, before overnighting in Lipsi, a laid-back isle famous for its gorgeous scenery. On board, guests can taste the destination’s famous wine, Aposperitis. The fun continues in Levintha, inhabited by a single family who raises animals and runs a restaurant where guests can enjoy fresh-caught fish. After, it’s off to Amorgos, where scenic hiking and beautiful beaches abound. The next day, you’ll stop at Panagia Hozoviotissa, a cliffside monastery dating back to the 10th century, before heading to Koufonisia, which boasts majestic caves and rock pools accessible only by boat (thankfully, Variety as you covered). The final stop of the day is the serene island of Iraklia, which offers clear-blue waters ideal for swimming. After remaining here overnight, you’ll head to the final port of call, Serifos, where guests can visit a remote beach, followed by an onboard BBQ feast to refuel before heading to Chora, a fairy-tale village.

Courtesy of Ponant Cruises

This French-owned cruise line offers an impressive fleet of small luxury ships. Additionally, says Curry, “Most cabins have private balconies, and travelers who plan early are rewarded with excellent value for the money.” What’s especially unique about Pontant, explains the pro, is that they “partner with Smithsonian Journeys on select departures to offer an enrichment program of included lectures and shore excursions in each port.”

Itinerary: Curry especially recommends the seven-night Cruising the Greek Islands of the Southern Aegean sailing, which will cruise round-trip from Athens in July and October 2025. The cruise calls on aforementioned spots like Patmos, Rhodes, and Amorgos before visiting Adamas in Milos, a volcanic island teeming with postcard-worthy white-washed towns and breathtakingly beautiful beaches. Adamas itself is a tiny fishing port where colorful boats shimmer against the blue waters. Finally, it’s off to Mykonos and Napflion before finally disembarking in Athens.

Disney Cruise Line

Courtesy of Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Line is world-famous for its exciting onboard offerings for children of all ages — including character and superhero meet-and-greets, dining options themed after beloved Disney princesses, and live performances galore — making it a favorite for families hoping for a fun-filled Greece vacation.

Itinerary: "Setting sail aboard the Disney Dream on the seven-night Mediterranean with Greek Isles itinerary is nothing short of magical!" says Megan Guinnup , a travel agent with Marvelous Mouse Travels . Cruising round-trip from Rome, the ship calls on Naples before exploring Greece. In addition to popular ports like Athens and Mykonos, you'll also visit Chania on the island of Crete, which offers a bustling harbor, exquisite architecture, and cobblestone streets that look like they were plucked straight from a (Disney) fairy tale. After exploring each locale, the fun continues back on board, where, per the pro, "there is enchantment everywhere — meeting beloved characters, enjoying deck parties with Mickey and Minnie, and indulging in exquisite cuisine."

Royal Caribbean

This mega-ship line truly has it all: Flashy entertainment and onboard activities — which, depending on the ship, can include everything from water slides to zip lines — and plenty of drinking and dining offerings to appease even the pickiest eaters. Guinnup and Kari Dillon, owner of Marvelous Mouse Travels, recommend setting sail aboard Odyssey of the Seas , which offers several Greek itineraries. "On board," says Guinnup, "There's a plethora of activities to enjoy, from bumper cars and roller skating to exquisite dining and a bionic bar — there's something for everyone!"

Itinerary: The seven-night Greek Isles itinerary sails round-trip from Rome with stops in Santorini, Ephesus, Mykonos, and Naples. Keep in mind that because the ship is so large, Santorini and Mykonos are both tender ports. With that in mind, Dillon recommends springing on The Key, an optional add-on that includes priority tender access so that you can spend as much time as possible on land basking in its beauty.

Virgin Voyages

Courtesy of Virgin Voyages

Richard Branson’s adults-only line has taken the industry by storm with its innovative offerings, including 20-plus restaurants instead of buffets, an onboard tattoo parlor, adult-focused entertainment offerings, and a two-story nightclub.

Itinerary: Dillon especially recommends the seven-night Greek Island Aglow itinerary for travelers seeking a high-energy, adults-only option. She continues, telling T+L, “Not only does this sail to the islands of Santorini and Rhodes, but it [also] has an overnight in Mykonos, which is world-famous for its lively party atmosphere.” As a bonus, the cruise also calls on Bodrum in Turkey, which boasts beautiful beaches, flower-filled cafes, and a bustling nightlife scene.

Celestyal Cruises

The Greece-based Celesytal Cruises prides itself on offering an authentic Greek vacation experience. Additionally, Celesytal is unique in that it offers year-round Aegean Sea sailings cruising round-trip from Athens and ranging in length from three to 14 nights. On land, Celeystal guests can choose from a selection of the line’s “Authentic Excursions,” which are specially curated, small-group, expert-led experiences designed to take travelers off the beaten path. Options — including walking food tours and pottery-making demos at a local factory — abound, depending on the particular port of call.

Itinerary: The seven-night Idyllic Aegean voyage visits Thessaloniki (which offers an eclectic combination of history, nightlife, and gastronomy), Kuşadası (a popular Turkish resort town), and Heraklion (the capital of Crete) before heading to iconic isles like Santorini and Mykonos, where the ship will remain overnight. Before returning to Athens for disembarkation, you’ll also stop in magnificent Milos.

Greek Isle Beauty

Explore greek isle ports.

Piraeus (Athens), Greece

Step back in time on your cruise to Greece. Visit the Parthenon, the Temple of Athena Nike, and other ancient ruins. Follow your tour with an open-air dinner in the Plaka neighborhood.

Crete (Souda), Greece

On the northwest coast of the island of Crete, Souda beckons with a romantic Venetian harbor, Old Town’s tangle of streets, and a 500-year-old lighthouse.

Katakolon (Olympia), Greece

The region reveals what it means to be Greek: traditions that go back thousands of years, simple but delicious and healthy cuisine, towering mountains, and crystal blue seas.

Mykonos, Greece

Mykonos is a top choice among the glamourous. Chic tavernas with open terraces line the sea and after the sun dips down, the island sizzles with youthful energy.

Kerkira (Corfu), Greece

Come ashore to Corfu on your Greek Islands cruise, a muse for some of history’s most notable writers. Be inspired with a swim in its azure waters or wander verdant, cypress-dotted hills.

Rhodes, Greece

Even without its immense Helios statue, Rhodes remains one of the most-visited Greek islands with its white-sand beaches, glittering coves and fascinating ruins.

Thira (Santorini), Greece

Santorini has a dizzying array of archeological treasures, sun-bleached villages and world-renowned wines. To top it all, it’s home to one of the most beautiful volcanic calderas in the world.

Gythion (Sparta), Greece

Once the port of ancient Sparta, this lovely fishing town draws its name from gi theon, which means “land of the gods” in Greek. It’s the entryway to the rugged, mountainous realm of the Spartans—the fiercely independent people who rejected foreign rule time and time again.

Kavala (Neapolis), Greece

Northern Greece is often overlooked as a Greek Isle cruise destination, and many will not even have heard of the Macedonian port of Kavála. But the city, and the region it opens into, are both picturesque and culturally important, with a history that encompasses classical times as well as the more modern era.

Mytilene, Nisos Lesbos

Lesbos, Greece is well known for olives and ouzo production, and visitors can see evidence of both everywhere. The island's charms extend beyond those pleasures, though: It’s a beautiful place of open plains, sweeping hills, and sandy beaches with views of Turkey across the water.

Pylos, Greece

Pine-covered hills wrap around the lovely town of Pylos (often referred to as Navarino, its Italian name), in the Messenia region of Greece's Peloponnese. Cobblestoned streets lead down to the harbor, where outdoor cafés overlook the bay. This pleasant scene, however, belies a turbulent history.

Best Greece cruises: Top 5 ships sailing the Greek isles

Ashley Kosciolek

From ancient mythology to wine and olives, there's a lot to love about Greece . There's something magical about the contrast between the deep-blue waters of the Aegean Sea and the ancient ruins and white buildings found on the Greek islands.

The best Greece cruises offer a well-rounded mix of islands and key Greece destinations: Athens for its ruins, Santorini for its blue-roofed churches, Mykonos for its shopping and nightlife, and Rhodes for its palace and charming cobblestone streets. You might even luck out and snag a visit to places like Turkey or Montenegro, too.

If you're not sure which ships to consider, here's a list of the best cruises to Greece for different kinds of travelers.

Best Greek isles cruises for families: Disney Dream

cruises greek islands

Disney Cruise Line is ideal for families. If a Disney cruise to Greece with kids sounds appealing, Disney Dream is the ship that will take you there.

The vessel isn't the line's newest, but it's also not the oldest, and you'll still find plenty to do on board. The 2,500-passenger ship's small size means it's easy to learn your way around. Even better, Disney Dream is typically more affordable than the line's newest vessels.

Dream offers jaw-dropping entertainment and daily character appearances, which means your children likely won't be bored on the ship. Its magical kids clubs feature a replica of Andy's room from "Toy Story" and the Millennium Falcon's cockpit from "Star Wars." (Expect surprise visits from R2-D2 or a squad of stormtroopers.)

Also, Greece is wrapped in tons of ancient history to spark your family's imagination. For example, in Athens, you might choose to take a guided tour of the Acropolis, followed by a "day in the life of an archaeologist" experience, where you'll search for treasures in a faux archaeological dig.

If the kids prefer something sportier, they might enjoy an excursion that takes visitors to the Panathenaic Stadium for a tour and a talk about the first Olympic games of the modern era.

Disney Dream sails five-, seven- and nine-night voyages from $322 per person, per night, for a windowless inside cabin. Some itineraries sail round-trip from Rome, while others cruise one-way between Rome and Barcelona with calls on Athens, Mykonos and other ports in Greece.

Best adults-only Greece cruises for party animals: Resilient Lady

cruises greek islands

If you enjoy a lively megaship party atmosphere but you don't want an environment that's overrun with kids, Virgin Voyages ' Resilient Lady will likely be the best Greece cruise option for you.

Although Virgin's Greece itineraries are pretty standard, its onboard experience is what sets it apart in the region.

The adults-only ship combines a casual vibe with a ramped-up nightlife. You'll find passengers dressed like mermaids, crew dressed like drag queens and performers that more accurately represent a cross-section of real life than those whom you'll find on most other lines' vessels.

As part of what just might be the best entertainment at sea , nighttime shows run the gamut from lounge singers and seemingly impromptu atrium dance parties to secret below-deck visits to the "crew bar" for a drink. There's also Scarlet Night — a rave-like pool-deck dance party where everyone wears red.

If that's not wild enough for you, there's also an app that lets you order Champagne to wherever you are on board, free fitness classes that encourage you to dress up in your '80s best and even a tattoo parlor so you can make some bad decisions.

Resilient Lady sails seven-, 10- and 11-night cruises from Athens, starting at $145 per person, per night, for an inside cabin. The voyages feature a mix of stops in Greece (including Santorini and Rhodes and an overnight in Mykonos), Croatia, Turkey and Montenegro, depending on the specific itinerary you choose.

Best budget-friendly Greece cruises: Rhapsody of the Seas

cruises greek islands

Want to check out Greece but have limited funds? Although you'll have to factor in potentially expensive flights to Europe to board, a voyage on Royal Caribbean 's Explorer of the Seas could be right up your alley.

The vessel is one of Royal Caribbean's oldest ships — it debuted in 2000 — but that doesn't mean you won't find fun onboard activities such as trivia, pool games, nightly theater performances, game shows, dancing and live music.

The best part if you're on a budget is the price. You can snag sailings of six, seven or eight nights from just $85 per person, per night, for an inside cabin. These cruises sail either between Rome and Athens or between Barcelona and Athens, or round-trip from Ravenna (the port for Bologna, Italy). Voyages include calls on Athens, Santorini and Mykonos, as well as ports in Cyprus and Turkey.

Best small-ship luxury Greece cruises: Windstar's Wind Star

cruises greek islands

Windstar Cruises ' namesake, Wind Star, is a 148-passenger masted sailing yacht that offers a special Greek islands experience because it calls on some of the area's smaller ports in addition to Athens.

The ship is great for sailing aficionados. Because of its small size, it can visit smaller ports that larger vessels can't access. (Think Monemvasia, a town carved into rock, and Gythion, where you'll find caves and lovely beaches.)

Also, Wind Star is an upscale ship, which means you'll find elevated dining and service on board. All cabins offer at least one window. When you purchase an all-inclusive fare, Wi-Fi, gratuities and alcohol are rolled into the price.

Among other itineraries, the vessel sails weeklong cruises between Athens and Rome that call on Monemvasia and Gythion in Greece, as well as several ports in Italy. Rates start from $300 per person, per night, for an outside cabin.

Best locally based Greek isles cruises: Celestyal Journey

cruises greek islands

Celestyal Cruises is a line you don't hear about too often, but it's based in Greece, which means it has a unique perspective on Greek island sailings.

If you're looking for a cruise vacation that's full of local Greek flair, check out the brand's Celestyal Journey. The ship isn't new, but it's new to the line. Following an extensive refurbishment, and its Celestyal debut in late 2023, it's the youngest member of the line's fleet.

Holding about 1,200 passengers, Celestyal Journey is small enough that you'll still receive a personalized experience but large enough to offer a multitude of onboard amenities. Enjoy yourself at the spa and fitness center, eight bars, seven restaurants, a chef's table experience and two pools. The ship offers 630 cabins, including 149 balcony cabins, 120 junior suites and 28 full-fledged suite accommodations.

Itineraries offered by Celestyal Journey range from four to 28 nights, departing from either Athens or Thessaloniki. Most voyages include calls on well-known Greek ports like Santorini, Rhodes and Mykonos, while longer sailings also venture to places in Turkey and Montenegro. Prices start from $89 per person, per night, for an inside cabin.

Bottom line

The best cruises to Greece combine a mix of fascinating destinations with a ship that fits your budget and travel style. If you're still unsure which cruise to choose, check with a knowledgeable cruise travel agent who can help you sort through the options.

Greece and Greek Islands Cruises

Cruising to a land rich with history and stunning islands.

Greece, the birthplace of philosophy, the Olympic Games and Western literature, offers an incomparable insight into ancient history and cultural heritage. No exploration of the Mediterranean is truly complete without MSC Greek Island Cruises, which journey through some of the most breath-taking landscapes this part of the world has on display.   Athens , the capital of Greece, has been inhabited for over 3,000 years. Discover more about these ancient roots at archaeological sites such as the Parthenon temple, a symbol of the city and of Greece. Located at the top of the Acropolis, it’s one of the most important cultural monuments in the world.   But beyond the borders of the ancient city are the Greek islands that can only be properly seen on one of our Greek Islands cruises. One-fifth of Greece’s territory is made up of more than 3000 islands, famed the world over for their fantastic variety of beaches. Ranging from extensive white sand beaches to tiny bays surrounded by steep, ocean carved cliffs, there’s a hidden cove for every visitor.   Sail with us on the MSC Greece and Greek Islands Cruise 2024 - 2025 season and you will discover magnificent places such as Mykonos , an eye-catching, white-and-blue stone city offering a fantastic nightlife, or Rhodes , with its old town centre where you can sample delicious Greek yoghurt, served with fresh honey and walnuts.   Throughout the year, there is also a host of cultural and folkloric events that are not to be missed. For visitors, these are an opportunity to enjoy the typical music and dancing, all making for an unforgettable holiday with MSC Greece cruises.   Book an MSC Mediterranean voyage  that includes Greek Islands cruises today, and you’ll experience Greece, its islands, and a truly memorable holiday.

Greece and Greek Island Cruises

Up close and personal to the very best of greece and the greek islands cruise vacations.

It’s easy to fall under an eternal spell of romanticism during a cruise vacation in Greece and the Greek islands. The eastern reaches of the eastern Mediterranean were the crossroads of many influential civilizations of antiquity from Phoenicians to Mycenaeans to Athenians and still more, as historic sites bear witness throughout the islands of the Dodecanese chain.  From the majesty of the Acropolis in Athens to the beauty of picture-perfect islands such as Mykonos and Patmos, Greece and the Greek islands cruise Vacation is an all-time classic destination that appeals to every sense.  No other country has given the world so much cultural heritage. The country’s lauded history and multifaceted architecture blend with incredible natural settings in port cities like Kavala and Volos— a spellbinding gateway to the otherworldly landscapes of Meteora in Thessaly, the lunar-like rocks of Sarakiniko Beach and blue-domed churches of Santorini.

Essential Greek Island Cruise Vacations

An essential stop is the glamorous island of Mykonos, with its gleaming white-washed houses and winding lanes of Chora. The island’s main town and port, along with its famous array of beaches, combine to make it an unforgettable port of call. The Mykonian reputation for exuberance is truly second to none. Among the most popular Greek islands with Vacationmakers is Rhodes, a mesmerizing presence with its astonishingly well-preserved medieval old town and lush scenery beyond. While considerably smaller, Patmos occupies a vaunted place in Christendom on account of John the Evangelist who, having been expelled from Ephesus by the Roman Emperor Diocletian in 95 AD, received his Revelation in the Cave of the Apocalypse.  And then there is Crete. With an array of historic cities and a vast and dazzling coastline, it’s no wonder the Greeks call Crete the megalonisos: the big island. In the Bronze Age, from about 3000 BC to 1200 BC, the Minoan culture flourished on the island and left behind the palace ruins of Knossos where the mythical lair of the Minotaur is among our complimentary excursions.

VIVA LA VILLAGE LIFE

Santorini only has villages, not towns, and these diverse areas provide a first-hand glimpse into Greek life. Because the whole island is less than 28 square miles, it's not difficult to take in most of the sights from the looming cliffs and still have time for shopping, eating and some down time on the Aegean Sea.

Greece Marine Life and Scuba Diver

DIVE TO THE DEPTHS

Greece's underwater worlds complete with seahorses, eels and plenty of fish are almost too perfect not to grab your scuba gear and take the plunge. Santorini has an excellent dive center that will get you into the water fast with instructors who will guide you through the warm Mediterranean waters.

Greece Nea Kameni Volcano

THE THRILL OF THE CLIMB

Another great thing to do while in Greece are the daily tours of the volcano Nea Kameni, which is located on an uninhabited island close to Santorini: begin with a short boat ride, followed by a climb up to the volcanic craters that takes just over an hour. The tour then takes in hot springs and mud baths, where you can recharge your batteries.

Greek Isles Archaeological Site

UNEARTH THE PAST

Go on an archaeological exploration of the ancient world's most renowned sites, from Bronze Age excavations to temples dedicated to the Greek gods with your cruise to Greece and Greek Isles.

Greek Isles Ancient Ruins

ANCIENT ADVENTURES

The largest of the Greek islands, Crete is both a beach paradise and home to some of the country's premier archaeological finds and attractions. Visit Greece and tour the Palace at Knossos, built by the Minoans more than 4,000 years ago, before exploring the Archaeological Museum, where the treasures of Knossos – including sculptures, jewellery and mosaics – are exhibited.

Akrotiri Historical Site Santorini Greece

Excavations of Akrotiri on Santorini Island date back to the Manoan Bronze Age, where the settlement was preserved in ash following a volcanic eruption in 1627 BC. The site is still being excavated today, and you can witness history first-hand by exploring the vast settlement and the enormous ongoing archaeological dig.

Ancient Greece Ruins Delos Apollo and Artemis

GUIDED BY GODS

Delos is one of the most important archaeological sites in the world, and it's also the mythological birthplace of the sun god, Apollo, and his twin, Artemis, goddess of the moon and the hunt. You can spend hours exploring the ruins and learning about Greek history on the most-sacred place of worship in Ancient Greece. Even the nearby old port has its own charm, with an amphitheatre, sanctuary and various dwellings waiting to be explored.

Olive orchards often offer tours and tastings, so grab the chance to try some freshly pressed oil.

Santorini is known for one-day yacht tours that give you a unique view of the island and its neighbours.

Ftelia Beach, on the northern side of Mykonos, is the place for watersports and windsurfing, as well as those sunsets everyone dreams about.

CUISINE EVERYTHING'S BETTA WITH A LITTLE FETA

The Greek islands are known for famous foods like feta cheese, but the location is also home to a slew of other delicacies. Olive oil plays a big part in the local cuisine, as does local produce, such as tomatoes and other Mediterranean vegetables. Feast on feta me meli, baked feta wrapped in filo or choriatiki: greek salad with tons of vegetables. While meat such as lamb, pork and veal are found everywhere, especially in gyros or keftethes (meatballs), fish and seafood are the undisputed stars, due to proximity to the sea.

Greek Feta Cheese and Kalamata Olives

SAY CHEESE!

Kefalonia is home to the legendary tiropita cheese puff, which is basically cheese baked in cheese, although you'll also find puffs filled with vegetables, particularly spinach, and even sometimes meat. You can also find local cheeses like feta, manuri or kefalotiri everywhere.

Greek Kreatopita Meat Pie

EYES ON THE PIES

Meat pies filled with lamb, veal or sometimes pork are called kreatopita, and they are cooked with wine and tomatoes, garlic, cinnamon and nutmeg, creating a medley of flavours. There's also a variety called pastitsio that combines pasta and meat.

Greek Fresh Seafood Platter

FLEX YOUR MUSSELS

Your choices are endless when it comes to fresh seafood prepared according to local tradition. Try a simple shrimp and pasta dish, or go wild with octapodi kokkinisto, octopus in tomato sauce, during your Greece cruise.

I think the suggestion of walking around Oia is a good one. If you like wine, I would suggest Santos Winery for a tasting with spectacular views. Another option is to go to the village of Megalochori (small traditional village), and stop at Gavalas which is right in the center of town.

Greek Island Cruise: The Best Way To Explore Greece?

D o you hate packing and unpacking? I do too. I just got back from a 5-week trip around Greece. During the first part of my trip, I had to switch hotels every couple of nights. Ugh! So it was a relief to finally board the Celestyal Crystal and stay put for my eight-day Greek Island Cruise ! I can’t wait to share with you why I think this is the best Greek Island Cruise to go Greek Island Hopping !

8-Day Greek Island Cruise “Idyllic Aegean”

There are a few reasons why I picked this cruise line and itinerary for my first Greek Island Cruise:

  • The islands on the Idyllic Aegean were on my bucket list (Thessaloniki, Kusadasi/Ephesus, Crete, Santorini, Mykonos, and Milos).
  • Celestyal Cruise Line stays longer at each destination, so you can experience the islands after the crowds leave. This made a BIG difference!!!
  • They offer small group “ authentic excursions ” at many destinations, which is great if you want to have a more custom experience in Greece.
  • With 1200 passengers, the Celestyal Crystal is a relatively small ship, which I prefer.
  • I did the 3-Continent cruise with Celestyal in 2019 and loved it!!!

Greek Island Cruise Itinerary

As I was traveling with my 13-year-old niece, I found the Celestyal Idyllic Aegean cruise itinerary and tours offered a good mix of historical places, great food, beautiful islands, and stunning beaches that made this trip interesting for both of us. Here were some of the highlights at each of the Greek islands we visited.

Day 1: Piraeus/Athens

As we arrived the night before our cruise departed, we didn’t have time to explore Athens or Piraeus before we boarded the ship. I had been to Athens before, but it was my niece’s first time in the city, so we added a few days to explore Athens after the cruise.

We arrived on the ship pretty early, around 11 AM. There was almost no line to check in and we were on board the ship at around 11:15. After checking out our Junior Suite , we explored the ship and had a quick lunch at the buffet. By the time we returned, our bags were waiting for us in the room and we unpacked and got settled in before heading to dinner and watching the evening show “Mama Mia”.

I highly recommend getting to the ship early. Last time we did a cruise out of Piraeus, we checked in after lunch, and not only was the check-in process much longer due to long lines, but the whole day felt more rushed.

Starting in September, you might be lucky to sail on the newest ship of the Celestyal fleet, the Celestyal Journey . This 1260 cabin ship features 149 suites, two pools, seven restaurants, and eight lounges and bars. Can’t wait to sail on it, too!

Day 2: Thessaloniki

On our first stop, we explored the second-largest city of Greece, Thessaloniki, on a food tour. This was an “authentic experiences” tour, and it was fantastic. We were a small group of 6 hungry travelers, ready to eat our way through the city.

Our local guide was fantastic and shared some interesting stories about Thessaloniki while taking us to some of the city’s best restaurants, bakeries, and cafés. We tried things like traditional Greek coffee, bougatsa (phyllo dough pockets stuffed with either sweet cream or cheese), and a traditional meze spread at an ouzeria with all kinds of treats, such as grilled octopus, mussels, fava beans, fried zucchini flowers stuffed with goat cheese, and many more local delicacies.

After our delicious food tour, my niece and I strolled through the city and did some shopping before returning to the ship.

Day 3: Kusadasi/Ephesus

This was my second time in Kusadasi, but the first time for my niece, so we definitely wanted to see Ephesus. The crowds at the end of May/beginning of June were definitely more than the last time I visited in December, but I= think that the UNESCO Heritage site of Ephesus is a must – at least once.

My favorite place in Ephesus is the area of the Terrace houses, which are over 2000 years old. You have to pay an extra entrance fee, but it is worth it to see the stunning mosaics and wall paintings that are incredibly well-preserved.

Afterward, we visited a carpet factory. To be honest, this was not my cup of tea as the experience was very sales-y and I would have preferred some more free time in Kusadasi to explore.

Pro Tip: If you plan on buying sweets and souvenirs, don’t buy it in the shops in town. For many things, the prices inside the cruise ship terminal are much better ($8 vs $22 for a box of Turkish delight).

Day 4: Heraklion, Crete

Crete is the largest Island in Greece, and one of the biggest sights on the island is the Palace of Knossos . Knossos is often referred to as the first city of Europe, dating back to the Neolithic area around 7000 BC.

After spending our previous day in Ephesus, I thought it would be a good idea to skip another day of ruins and go on a scenic drive around the Cretian countryside to a picturesque mountain village instead.

Big mistake! Our tour was quite touristy and not as idyllic as I had hoped. Three big busses of tourists approximately doubled that small village’s population, making it a lot less “quaint.” We overheard several cruise ship guests who had gone to Knossos’s archeological site and LOVED it. I recommend choosing one of the Palace of Knossos excursions for this cruise stop.

Day 5: Santorini

Santorini is by far the most popular Greek island, and we were visiting at the beginning of the high season, so I was expecting big crowds instead of serene Instagram-able scenery. Don’t get me wrong, it was busy, but as all the other cruise ships were leaving, the island transformed and turned into the magical place that drew those crowds in the first place.

We started our day with a winetasting tour and visited two small villages. Our group was about 20 people, and we had a very nice experience without the crowds and saw some beautiful places in Santorini. We visited two wineries: Anhydrous Winery is within walking distance or a short taxi ride from the town of Fira and has excellent wines. But don’t miss Venetsanos Winery ! This winery has stunning views overlooking the whole caldera. What a spot to enjoy a glass of wine, no?

After our tour, we were dropped off near the cable car. As there were five cruise ships in Santorini, the wait time in the afternoon was approximately 1-1.5 hours. I felt bad for the other cruise ship travelers, as their visit to Santorini was cut even shorter by having to stand in line to make it back in time to the last tender.

Celestyal doesn’t leave Santorini until past midnight, so got to enjoy the island when it was a lot less crowded. We strolled up the coastal path to Imerovigli, a small village north of Fira to enjoy the views and then had dinner trying some of the delicious Santorini dishes , overlooking the sunset over the caldera. Definitely worth the splurge for this stunning view.

Our waitress said it was only about 10 more minutes by foot down the switchbacks from the restaurant to the tender boat harbor. That was a lie, ha! I attribute our 30+ minute descent to the fact that I was wearing flimsy sandals (the stones are very slippery!) and that we had to dodge the donkey droppings in the dark with flashlights.

Pro Tip: If you plan on walking up or down to the harbor, wear proper footwear and give yourself a little extra time before the last tender leaves.

Day 6: Mykonos

Since my niece and I enjoyed our food tour in Thessaloniki so much, my niece and I decided to do another one in Mykonos . This time, our group was a little bigger (17 people) but we had the chance to try some delicious food on this tour as well, while also getting to know the port city of Chora.

Mykonos is known as one of the high-society party islands of the Mediterranean and we got to enjoy a little glimpse of it as our ship was again the last one to leave the port well past midnight. Most cruise ships left the island between 3-5 PM. After they left, Mykonos transformed similarly to Santorini and felt like a completely different island.

Day 7: Milos

I was really looking forward to Milos. My niece and I signed up to go kayaking, and I could not wait to see the bright turquoise water with white limestone cliffs. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate. We were still able to kayak and had a fantastic time, but the grey sky turned the water into a similarly bleak color.

However, my niece and I still had a blast. Our guide showed us stunning beaches, hidden caves, and hot springs and even shared homemade snacks with us. It was my niece’s first time kayaking, and she did really well. I was super proud of her for trying something outside her comfort zone, and when we returned to the ship, she couldn’t stop smiling the rest of the day. What a great way to finish our Greek island cruise!

Day 8: Piraeus/Athens

Time flies when you are having fun, and before we knew it, we were already back in Piraeus, and it was time to disembark.

Greek Island Cruise with Celestyal Review

I am so glad I picked Celestyal for my first Greek isles cruise. The small ship, small group tours, and long time in port really made this cruise a perfect fit for me, as I am not a big fan of crowds and like to explore each destination a little deeper. Of course, each island deserves more than just a one-day stop, but I felt I got a good first glimpse of each cruise stop.

If you have limited time and want to see as much as possible and as many places as possible during your trip to Greece, then a Greek island cruise is the most convenient and cost-effective way. Seven different destinations in 8 days would not be possible in any other way.

Of course, a smaller ship like the Celestyal Crystal has not have quite as many amenities as some of those big cruise ships, but it still has everything you expect to find on a cruise ship, including spa, pool, jacuzzi, casino, evening performances and several restaurants. And since there is no sea day and the time in port is so long, I wouldn’t have had much time to take advantage of those amenities anyway.

On the other hand, a smaller ship and longer time in port also means that it is less invasive and disruptive for the locals. Yes, they depend on tourism, but when the roads are so busy that even emergency vehicles can’t get through, you can see the dark side of mass tourism. As we had more time in port, we also had more time to shop, eat, and drink at each destination, supporting the local economy. Celestyal Cruise Line is a Greek company with headquarters in Piraeus, so even the money for the cruise tickets goes back into the Greek economy.

If you are looking for a small ship Greek island cruise that lets you maximize your time at each cruise stop and want to avoid the big crowds, then Celestyal is for you. I highly recommend them and can’t wait to cruise with them again!

29 Best Things to Do in Crete

By James Ellis

Last updated: May 29th, 2024

Old Town of Rethymno, one of the best things to do in Crete

  • Find a Cruise

There are an abundance of things to do in Crete, the fifth-biggest island in the Mediterranean. As a summer vacation destination, it’s best known for its historic Venetian-influenced ports, lovely towns, and stupendously amazing beaches.

Head away from the sands, though, and a whole other world unfolds: towering mountains, striking gorges, rushing rivers, and quaint mountain villages.

There’s history in those hills and on the island in general. Crete could well be its own country, and in the Minoan era was even its own empire, but has been ruled by many civilizations. All of them left some kind of legacy, whether it be food, architecture, or simply further fuelling the locals’ strong spirit of independence.

While that spirit still burns bright, Cretans also offer one of the warmest welcomes on the Greek islands. Stop for a Greek coffee or a glass of tsikoudia spirit and make a plan based around the best things to do in Crete, Greece.

Relax at the Old Venetian Port of Chania

Chania, one of the best things to do in Crete

Old Venetian Port of Chania

Traveling to the Greek Islands can be like a trek back in time, from Rhodes’ magnificent medieval Old Town to lovely Little Venice in Mykonos. Chania’s Venetian-era port is right up there with them for its movie-star looks.

The port sits on an almost perfect arc and strolling the waterfront here is one of the best things to do in Greece . It’s lined with elegant mansions, a captivating mixture of Venetian, Ottoman-era, and neoclassical architecture.

Chania, one of the best things to do in Crete

These pastel-colored buildings provide a vibrant backdrop to the traditional fishing boats that line parts of the harbor. Not only is the setting uniquely beautiful but it’s also a great spot in which to watch the world go by while sipping on Greek coffee thick as molasses or trying a glass of refreshing ouzo, Greece’s traditional anise-flavored spirit.

Fishermen call out their wares, fresh octopus dry out in the sun ready for grilling on smoking charcoal, and locals stretch their legs with a late afternoon “volta” or stroll along the seafront.

Hike the Gorge of Therissos

View while exploring the Gorge of Therissos

Gorge of Therissos

There are heroic deeds to be had in this five-mile-long gorge a short drive from the port town of Chania. The hike along its length is one of the best things to do in Crete, a bold claim given that Crete is riddled with deep gorges thanks to its mountainous nature.

The trail, which ranges from 50 to 250 feet in width, passes through incredible scenes with olive, orange, and oleander trees lining the way. It ends in the village of Therissos.

The limestone walls of the canyon echo with history. The village was one of the main bases for the resistance in the battle against Ottoman occupiers in the late 19th century. It was also once the home of revolutionary hero Eleftherios Venizelos. His former home is now a museum that tells the story of the rebel’s legend.

Take a Jeep Tour of the White Mountains

Lush landscape of the White Mountains

White Mountains

Crete is so big, it could well be a different country to the rest of Greece (and there are a fair few locals who firmly believe it should be, too). The island’s size makes for incredible topography: towering limestone peaks, deep valleys, rolling farmlands, and hidden bays along the hundreds of miles of coastline.

The White Mountains or “Lefka Ori” are so vast, they dominate the skyline south of Chania and cover most of the center of the Western Crete. With more than 30 peaks above 6,000 feet, they make for an incredible day of exploration.

You could easily spend a whole vacation here but if you’re wondering what to do in Crete and have limited time, the best way to get an insight into life in the hills is to explore by jeep. Organized tours take in tiny hamlets, traditional shepherd huts, and agro farms, while also offering the chance to sample hospitality, mountain-style, in a local taverna.

Hang Like a Hippy in Matala

Matala, one of the best things to do in Crete

Matala, lying some 50 miles south of the port of Heraklion on Crete’s south coast, dates from the Neolithic era, when sweeping tides created a network of caves in the soft rock of the cliffs that surround what is now the town.

These caves were once Roman burial chambers but the 1960s saw them become a unique hippy hangout. Cat Stevens, Janis Joplin, and Bob Dylan all spent time here. While much of the town now is a more modern affair with its white cube houses, winding streets, souvenir shops, and a gorgeous beach, that flower power legacy can still be seen on some impressive carved tree trunks in the town center.

See Europe’s Oldest City at Knossos

Knossos, one of the best things to do in Crete

Occupied since the neolithic era more than 7,000 years ago, Knossos is thought to be Europe’s oldest city. The main site, stretching over more than six square miles, was the epicenter of the Minoan civilization, an empire that spread to Athens and beyond.

At its heart are the remnants of what would have been a vast palace that in its heyday would have covered more than five acres between the main residence and its outbuildings.

As well as having huge architectural importance, this Greek landmark also serves as the inspiration for the myth of the Minotaur. This creature was half-man and half-bull and is said to have lived in a maze here and been the source of the Empire’s power.

Today, a visit to the site is one of the best things to do in Crete. A mixture of Greek ruins and recreations, it includes the palace, courtyards, and what would have been private apartments of the time.

Sample the Local Firewater

Tsikoudia in a bottle

Many north and east European countries have their own high potency spirit, and in Crete, it takes on the name “tsikoudia”, a fragrant and clear grape-based pomace brandy that can reach up to 65% ABV. While this potent spirit is also known as “tsipouro” and “raki”, it differentiates from the Turkish version of raki in that it is not aniseed flavored.

Tsikoudia comes to the fore at most meals, especially celebratory ones, in Crete either as an aperitif or postprandial tipple. Either way, being offered a glass is a sign of welcome and friendship.

Served in shot glasses, either ice cold or on the rocks, it’s the kind of drink to be knocked back in one rather than sipped, although joining in too vigorously may see that glass quickly refilled for another round.

Take a Dip at Agioi Apostoloi Beach, Chania

Turquoise waters of Agioi Apostoloi Beach, Chania

Agioi Apostoloi Beach, Chania

Crete is home to some of Greece’s best beaches , most of which lie outside the main cities of Heraklion, Rethymnon, and Chania, meaning transport can be an issue if you don’t rent a car. Not so with Agioi Apostoloi, a pair of lovely beaches less than two miles from Chania’s Old Town.

The two beaches are separated by a T-shaped headland that offers both some charming forest walks and protection from winds. The ocean here is mostly calm and therefore perfect for less confident swimmers.

To the west of the peninsula lies Glaros Beach, covered in fine sand and closer to Agioi Apostoloi (Saint Apostles) Church from which the beaches take their common name. On the eastern side, the beach is known as Chrysi Akti (golden coast) thanks to its richly colored sands. Both beaches have sunbeds, showers, and umbrellas, as well as cafés and beach bars.

Go Fishing in Agia Pelagia

Beautiful waterfront of Agia Pelagia

Agia Pelagia

On a small cove between the towns of Heraklion and Rethymnon lies the tiny resort town of Agia Pelagia, famed for its wide crescent beach lined with sunbeds and umbrellas.

The whitewashed church from which the town takes its name dates from the Venetian era, when this would have been a small fishing hamlet. There’s still the chance to collect a rod and tackle and head out on a fishing boat from the town’s port.

Sea bass, mullet, and Mediterranean moray are some of the most likely catches, but tuna and mahi mahi are not unknown, either. The rocks around the islet off Dia are great for bottom feeders and even if the catch of the day is poor, there’s still the chance to see loggerhead sea turtles and the occasional dolphin.

Enjoy the Pink Sand at Elafonissi Beach

Elafonissi Beach, one of the best things to do in Crete

Elafonissi Beach

On an island that is teeming with amazing beaches, Elafonissi is one of the very best. Set on the south-west coast, a 90-minute drive from the port of Chania, it’s certainly worth the trek.

Technically an islet that can be walked to across a sandbank when the tide is low, there are vast stretches of pink sand beach on both the Elafonissi and Cretan sides. This means that although the beach is incredibly popular, it never seems too crowded.

The Cretan side is more “organized” with sun loungers and a beach bar, while the islet side is a little more remote, meaning secluded spots can be found along its far reaches. Either way, it’s hard not to be wowed by the Caribbean-style feel to this gorgeous south-coast spot.

See the Island of Spinalonga

Just offshore in the Gulf of Elounda, an hour’s drive from Heraklion, is one of the most poignant things to do in Crete.

The barren, rocky island of Spinalonga has a checkered history. Fortified in ancient times, it became an important bastion in the Venetian era to protect the island from pirate invaders.

Since then, its fortunes have fluctuated. First, the island was used as a rebel base in the battle against Ottoman occupiers. Then, it became a flourishing Muslim settlement after Cretan independence.

In 1903, Spinalonga was designated a leper hospital with thousands sent there to see out their final days, supposedly in solitude and living on state handouts.

Instead, they chose to organize a community, married one another, and had children, despite the bleak circumstances. The colony was closed in the late 1950s and the island was abandoned for many years before becoming a monument to human spirit. The story of its last inhabitants is told in a series of moving exhibits.

Step Back in Time in Anogia

Mountains towering over the village of Anogia

Set at an altitude of some 2,100 feet on the slopes of Crete’s highest mountain, Mount Ida (locally known as Psiloritis), Anogia is one of the most traditional villages on the beautiful island . Here, the winding streets are redolent of old Crete, a time when life was much slower than in the 21st century.

At its heart is the tree-shaded square of St George, often home to free performances of folk music and dancing, while shops sell traditional woodcut art and embroidery.

The village is also the starting point for those wishing to summit Ida for a glimpse of the stone church of Timios Stavros at the highest point, 8,000 feet. Nearby, there’s also Sfendoni Cave to explore, with impressive stalactites and stalagmites.

Drink From the Lionhead Fountain in Spili

Popular site of the Lionhead Fountain, Spili

Lionhead Fountain, Spili

Spili means “cave” in English and this traditional hamlet is named after a series of caves in the surrounding hills. With a population of just 800 and sitting by the verdant Amari Valley right between the north and south coasts, the village is not only impossibly pretty but is famed for its natural spring water.

At the heart of the village is the “kefalovrissi”, a series of lionheads at the spring’s mouth that act as a spout for the flowing water, said to be rich in iron. The fountain sits under shaded plane trees and the surrounding buildings host tavernas with local cuisine, pretty cafés, and shops selling folk art.

See Minoan-era Tombs in Archanes

Aerial view of Archanes

A 20-minute drive from the capital, Heraklion, Archanes is a mountain village divided in two.  “Kato” (or lower) Archanes sits in the valley, while “Ano” (upper) is the larger of the two and the main reason to visit. The villages have recently been restored with European Union funds, winning them an award as the best-restored village in Europe.

That claim aside, the area has been inhabited for more than 5,000 years and at its height, it was a Minoan city second only to Knossos in importance. Today, the remnants from that city can be seen across a series of excavations. The surrounding agricultural land is home to fields of olive trees and grapevines and the local wines are said to be among the best on the island.

Climb the Rock of Charakas

View of the Charakas Village from the mountains

Overlooking the planes surrounding Mount Asterousia, the imposing rock of Charakas is a 120-ft limestone formation. Its summit is reached by a pleasant hike that leads to a 14th-century Venetian fortress and a Byzantine-era church that has been restored to its former glory.

At the summit, there are incredible views as far as the south coast that make for great images. The rock also gives its name to a tiny village of around 1,000 people, all living in stone houses, as well as a number of small churches and local tavernas that are great for post-hike respite.

Pay Tribute to the 10 Martyrs of Agioi Deka

Street view of a church in Agioi Deka

When the Romans ruled Crete in 250AD, the then emperor Decius embarked on a series of religious persecutions that saw 10 residents of this tiny village an hour south of Heraklion martyred.

The village is named in their honor—Agioi Deka means the “saintly ten”—and its home to a Byzantine basilica that is dedicated to them, as well as a more modern shrine that sits on the spot where they were buried.

Close by is also the ruined city of Gortys (many of the homes here are said to have been built with materials from the site), and there’s an archaeological museum containing finds from the area.

See the Bungee Jumpers at Aradaina

Popular Aradaina bridge in Crete

For adrenalin lovers, plummeting 460 feet from the Aradaina military bridge while attached to a bungee cord is one of the best things to do in Crete. The bridge spans the canyon of the same name and every weekend through summer, people line up to take this leap of faith, the second highest such jump in Europe .

It’s quite the sight, even if you’re not jumping yourself, to see them plummeting to the river below, only for their fall to be arrested by the rope.

The jump is close to another pretty mountain village worth visiting. Anapolis (or “upper city”) takes its name from its position, high in the White Mountains at an altitude of some 2,000 feet.

Drink in the Waters of Zaros

Beautiful landscape of Zaros Lake

The natural springs in the village of Zaros, set in the foothills of Psiloritis, give rise to Crete’s most popular bottled mineral water that shares its name with the village itself. The water won the title of “world’s best” back in 2017.

The spring water gushes from the hills and flows into the manmade Zaros lake from where it is transported to the nearby factory for bottling.

Aside from factory tours, there’s a host of things to do here, from chilling beside Lake Votomos to hiking through the Agios Nikolaos Gorge. There are also several fish farms with lakeside tavernas offering freshwater trout and salmon as their specialties.

Dive into Balos Lagoon

Balos Lagoon, one of the best things to do in Crete

Balos Lagoon

Crete’s most famous beach is that of Balos, a remote lagoon approached by a rocky mountain road on the far west coast, some 40 miles out of Chania. You’ll be glad you made the effort when you see the beach on offer.

With ice-white sand and turquoise waters, there’s a real tropical feel here, and while the main beach can be busy in summer, there are plenty of small coves in which to find solitude.

On the hills above the beach there’s a viewpoint which is worth visiting for jaw-dropping shots of the beach below, as well as the islets of Agria Gramvousa and Imeri Gramvousa just offshore. The latter is home to an impressive medieval castle, as well as the remains of a shipwrecked boat.

Take a Cooking Class in Vamos

Olive oil in Crete

Cretan cuisine is incredibly tasty, largely thanks to the fact that the simple dishes are made from some of the best ingredients available: olive oil, vegetables, cheese, meat, and wine that are locally produced and mostly organic.

In the small village of Vamos, a 30-minute drive from Chania, cooking classes are held in a building that was formerly a traditional olive oil press. Over the course of a day, guests learn how to make four to five dishes using locally sourced ingredients.

The village itself deserves a mention, too. Formerly a pirate settlement dating from the eighth century, it was the headquarters of the invading Ottoman army in the 1700s. Now it’s home to well-preserved architecture that lines stone roads, while the surrounding fields are agricultural with almond, fig, lemon, and olive plantations.

Enjoy a Wine Tasting Tour

Wine tasting in Crete

Viticulture has been present in Crete for some 5,000 years, since the Minoan period. In the middle ages, Malvasia sweet wines from Crete were considered so valued they were shipped from here to the rest of Europe.

The fine tradition continues today and the Mediterranean island is home to more than 60 wineries, making it Greece’s second largest wine producing region. Most of these offer tours and cellar door sales.

Look out for crisp whites with tropical notes from the plyto and vidiano varieties, with deep, rich mandilari and light, fruity liatiko leading the way among the reds. Well-known producers include Lyrarakis, Douloufakis, and Tamiolakis.

Visit the Old Town of Rethymno

Old Town of Rethymno, one of the best things to do in Crete

Old Town of Rethymno

Crete’s third largest city is a much more compact affair than both Heraklion and Chania, but no less worth visiting. One of Greece’s best-preserved medieval towns, it is famed for its Venetian fortifications, elegant mansions, orthodox and Catholic churches, and magnificent mosques.

As with the Greek city of Chania, the port area is a delight, stretching from the Venetian-era Fortezza castle to sandy Rethymnon beach, a great place to cool off in the summer heat.

There’s some great shopping to be had here, too. The winding, cobbled streets of the Old Town are home to clothes shops, jewelry stores, and art galleries, as well as Greek souvenir shops for those looking to take home a special trinket. Those same shaded streets offer some great lunch spots, too, from traditional tavernas to cute cafés and high-end eateries.

Enjoy the Botanical Gardens at Fournes

Lush landscape of the Botanical Park & Gardens Of Crete

Botanical Park & Gardens Of Crete

At times tragedy can give birth to something beautiful. Case in point are the Botanical Park & Gardens Of Crete outside the town of Fournes, just south of Chania. The gardens are built on the site of a 2003 fire that destroyed more than 100,000 olive trees, some of which were over 400 years old. This catastrophic event left great swathes of land with nothing more than a covering of ash.

Undeterred by the destruction, land owner Petros Marinakis vowed to create an educational space for future generations and the park now houses more than 150 species of fruit trees, herbs, medicinal, and ornamental plants.

The gardens are lined with paths to walk and quiet places to enjoy the stillness, while there’s also a lake and a stone amphitheater for performances. At the park’s heart is a single charred olive tree, a reminder of the importance of preserving the great outdoors.

Visit the Markets of Chania

Cheese sold at a market in Chania

Market in Chania

One of the best things to do in Crete is to pay a visit to the street markets of Chania, which are held four times a week at various locations around the city center. Locals wait in line to pick up fresh fruit and vegetables, pungent homemade cheeses, fragrant dried herbs, as well as honey, live chickens, and rabbits, all from small producers.

A separate section of the market also offers clothing. If you want to sample life like a local for a few hours, these street markets are the place to do it.

Marvel at the Ancient Theater of Aptera

Historic site of the Ancient Theater of Aptera

Ancient Theater of Aptera

Set between the Bay of Souda and Crete’s White Mountains lies one of the island’s most outstanding non-Minoan architectural sites, the ancient theater of Aptera. Dating from the early Hellenistic period, the ruins, made of local limestone, show it had an auditorium, orchestra pit and stage.

Roman modifications from the first to third centuries BC indicate the addition of bath houses and cisterns, though new discoveries are being constantly made by the archaeologists who work on the site on a regular basis.

Go Rafting on the Kiliaris River

Water flowing from the White Mountain peaks of Varsamou and Mavri heads down tributaries to create the Kiliaris River, at three miles long, the second longest in Crete. Stretching from Stylos village to Kyani Akti near Kalives, it offers some great rafting for beginners who can travel along a 1.5-mile stretch with some gentle grade 1 and 2 rapids.

Along the way, the river passes ancient watermills, the 1898 chapel of St John the Baptist (at which there are picnic tables for a pleasant activity pause) and forests of plane trees. This is an important wetlands habitat and rafters may also spot a number of birds, turtles, crabs, and toads.

Enjoy Lake Kournas

Lake Kournas, one of the best things to do in Crete

Lake Kournas

Crete’s only freshwater lake lies on the plains of Georgioupoli and is yet another significant body of water fed from the peaks of the White Mountains. Set against the backdrop of these Greek mountains and surrounded by forests, it’s a lovely spot away from the beaches in the height of summer.

To the southwest, there is a nature preserve that is part of the Natura 2000 Network and home to rare plants and trees. These provide a habitat for more than 130 species of birds, including coots, ducks, and herons.

As waters recede in summer, several small coves of white sand are found around the shore making for ideal swimming spots, and there are several companies offering pedalo rental, too. The eastern shore, meanwhile, has several lakeside cafeterias and tavernas, all offering views over the pretty setting.

Go Back in Time at the Arkadi Monastery

Beautiful exterior of the Arkadi Monastery

Arkadi Monastery

Crete is known as one of the best Greek Islands for beaches , mountains and amazing food, but one of the things that certainly deserves much more attention is its monasteries. There are more than 20 of these spiritual sanctuaries spread around the island, all of them incredibly beautiful, but the one at Arkadi stands out for both its architecture and its history.

Dating from the 16th century, it is built in the Renaissance style with Baroque and Roman influences. It played an important role in the 1866 Cretan revolt against Ottoman rule when 943 people sought refuge here, sacrificing themselves by blowing up barrels of gunpowder after a three-day siege.

Today the monastery, a much more peaceful affair, is home to seven monks, and visitors can take in the main church, the dining room, cellars, a museum, and an art gallery. Do note that visiting a monastery in Greece requires all visitors to cover their knees and shoulders.

Go Horseback Riding in Georgioupoli

Horseback riding in Georgioupoli

Horseback riding in Georgioupoli

Crete has a longstanding history of horseback riding and the native Messara pony has been on the island for at least 1,000 years. While they were once considered rare, a conservation program has started to increase their numbers.

Sure-footed and comfortable to ride, these ponies are a favorite of the many horseback riding stables that operate around the town of Georgioupoli. Experiences include treks in the countryside, journeys to Lake Kournas, and rides along the beach. Some riding schools even allow riders to enter the waves with their horses.

Admire the Ancient Village of Gavalochori

Aerial view of Gavalochori

Gavalochori Photo by C messier on Wikimedia Commons, licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0

More than 1,000 years old and with a population of just 350 people, Gavalochori is a typical Cretan village between the coast and the mountains. It’s impossibly pretty with Venetian arches, 14 Orthodox churches, and Roman tombs.

At the local folklore museum you can get an insight into Cretan arts and craft, while there’s also a pre-industrial olive mill that dates from the 17th century. Activities in the area range from visiting modern olive oil producers to art therapy retreats.

Seajets transforms former Costa Magica ship into Greek Islands Party Cruise

CruiseMapper logo

The former Costa Magica is set for a new chapter as a party cruise vessel navigating the Greek Islands.

Maritime Executive reports that Greek shipping company Seajets acquired 8 ships from Carnival Corporation and the now-defunct UK-based Cruise & Maritime Voyages between 2020 and 2023. While two of these vessels were sold for scrap and two others were transferred to other operators - Celestyal Cruises and French startup Compagnie Francaise De Croisieres - Seajets has retained the remaining ships.

Seajets is launching a new party cruise line for the Greek Islands called Neonyx Cruises, with the recently refurbished former Costa Magica, the largest of their acquisitions, leading the fleet. Renamed the Goddess of the Night , this ship will offer a unique blend of music festivals, cultural experiences, and scenic voyages on three- and four-night itineraries. Passengers can embark from Piraeus or Mykonos in Greece, or Cesme in Turkey, with a scheduled port call in Santorini, Greece , on Wednesdays.

Neonyx Cruises plans to offer adult-only voyages featuring performances by seven to ten international music DJs, along with dancers and acrobats. The ship will also include a casino, wellness amenities, sports facilities, and shopping options. Marketing materials highlight that music performances will span from sunset to sunrise, with the main buffet restaurant serving food until 4:30 a.m.

Operations are set to begin on July 15 aboard the 102,784 gross ton vessel, which can accommodate up to 3,470 passengers and 1,000+ crew members.

Everything to know about Love Island's first celebrity bombshell Joey Essex

cruises greek islands

Love Island fans were left wanting more after Monday's opening episode concluded with the surprise arrival of the show's first-ever celebrity bombshell Joey Essex .

It's undeniable that Joey's been around the block, so Love Island seems like the natural next step for him. Can you remember just how many shows he's actually appeared on?

We've taken a look back at the 33-year-old's life in the spotlight from his extensive career to his star-studded dating history. Take a look:

If you're a fan of UK reality TV, chances are you recognise Joey .

The 33-year-old first appeared on The Only Way Is Essex as a supporting cast member alongside his cousin Chloe Sims for the show's second season but was promoted to a main cast member the following season. He quit the show in 2013.

That same year Joey's career gained a new lease of life when he appeared on I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! He impressively placed fourth behind finalists Lucy Pargeter, David Emanuel, and winner Kian Egan.

Known for his ditsy personality, a one-off documentary titled Educating Joey Essex was commissioned, with ITV2 later ordering a full series. It was then picked up for a seven-part second season.

Joey Essex

Throughout his career, Joey has appeared on huge reality shows such as The Jump, Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins, and MTV's Celebrity Ex on the Beach.

The 33-year-old appears to have a soft spot for Celebs Go Dating, first appearing on the show in 2016 but returning for its second season the following year. He also appeared on Celebs Go Dating: The Mansion. It's no wonder he's now looked to Love Island to find romance.

Two years ago Joey participated in the Australian version of I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! His venture was less successful than his original stint, however, finishing the show in sixth place.

At the beginning of 2023, the reality star impressively placed runner-up alongside his professional partner Vanessa Bauer on season 15 of Dancing on Ice.

Joey has made more than a few guest appearances on UK TV over the years from 8 Out of 10 Cats, Celebrity Juice, and The Chase to talk shows such as Loose Women and This Morning.

Some might just crown him the King of UK reality TV? Just a thought!

Dating History

Stating the obvious, Joey is currently single and looking for love in the Love Island villa. However, his past dating endeavours have seen him rack up quite the star-studded list.

The 33-year-old was in a relationship with his TOWIE co-star Sam Faiers between 2011 and 2014. He later dated stylist Georgie Purves between 2016 and 2018.

Over the years, Joey has had flings with Amy Willerton, Stephanie Pratt, Sabreena Diamond, Lorena Medina, Rita Ora, Brenda Santos, Maria Thattil, and Tia Skillman.

His most recent public romance was that of his relationship with his Dancing on Ice co-star Vanessa Bauer. However, they split just months after the show ended in early 2023.

Joey has also had encounters with our very own Maura Higgins and Love Island star Lucie Donlan. Let's hope he's luckier in love in the Majorcan villa this summer.

Who will Joey couple up with?

The first episode of Love Island 2024 ended on the cliffhanger that was Joey's bombshell entrance.

It's unknown as of yet who the Essex man will set his sights on, but fans are predicting chaos.
