Hi Vicky and Craig I just wanted to drop you a line to thank you for all your help in making our few days in Provence so enjoyable.  I’m still on a high from it and am dreaming of climbing up more HC mountains next year.  I must be mad! Best wishes

The 3 Routes Up Ventoux

There are three different routes up mont ventoux - here's an overview plus a downloadable gpx file with them all., if you need a supported ride, you can use my bespoke service ., from bédoin.

This is the 'classic' Tour de France climb. It's 21.5km long and sees you gain around 1610 metres. It's a brutal, relentless climb – from around Sainte Estève  to Chalet Reynard, you'll ride at a gradient of around 9-10%.  By far the most popular of the three routes.

From Malaucène

A quieter route but no less challenging. Its stats are similar to the classic climb ( 21km with an ascent of 1570 metres), but its gradients are more variable.

A longer climb but a more forgiving gradient, the Sault side is generally seen as the 'easy' options and it offers a more gentle experience than the other two routes. It's  26km with  1220 metres gained.

Presentation

High above us soars the Mont Ventoux (1909 metres), the “Géant de Provence” that cyclists the world over fear and respect. But there are also innumerable little roads which run hither and thither, weaving their way over the lower slopes of the mountain for the delight of cyclists whose pleasure is more about enjoying the countryside, than breaking records! Small winding roads link vineyards, olive groves, orchards and fields of lavender. Along the way, cyclists plying their passage through the heart of this austere yet lovely limestone countryside may enjoy exploring typical little villages that surprise by their charm and character. Every day there’s a different outing with new places and faces to see. Every evening there’s a friendly welcome and a table set with dishes of the ever-inventive Provençal cuisine.

Looking for a shorter escape? Discover our 4-day stay : At the foot of the Mont Ventoux in 4 days

You'll love

  • visiting the historical town of Vaison-la-Romaine
  • exploring the Valley of the Toulourenc at the foot of the impressive north face of the Mont Ventoux
  • the delightful stopover at Montbrun-les-Bains, one of France's prettiest villages
  • the plateau of Albion, known as the French capital of lavender cultivation
  • The Gorges of the Nesque, a spectacular and wild canyon

Program : At the foot of the Mont Ventoux

Delightful provençal village through which runs the Ouvèze river. Remarkable bridge and fountain.

Dinner and night in 3 star hotel with its own pool at Mollans sur Ouvèze

29 km stage with total uphill 585 metres. Around 3hrs. A surprising ride that takes you through wild places where time seems to have stood still. Scenery of a thousand colours and practically untouched by visual pollution. Then the lovely little Provençal borough of Malaucène and its remarkable old town centre.

43 km stage with total uphill 575 metres. About 4hrs.

This sally out to and around Vaison la Romaine takes you through rich and little-known territory. Each village crossed has its own little architectural treasures, and tasting (in moderation, please!) the local wines only adds to the agreable nature of the experience.

36 km stage with total uphill 740 metres. About 4hrs30. Today you'll encounter the valley of the Toulourenc, a river that flows at the foot of the Mont Ventoux. The largest water course draining the mountain, its source is beside the Château d'Aulan near Montbrun les Bains. It flows full 30km down a narrow valley with deep wild gorges to gush into the Ouvèze after sweeping through several very pretty places, and thus limiting in a starkly definitive way the north face of the Mont Ventoux.

Dinner and night in a 3* hotel in Sault

52 km stage with total uphill 480metres. Around 4 to 5hrs. An easy itinerary on the boundary of the plateau of Albion, during which you will enjoy seeing fine testimony of the past of this region. Dinner and night in a 3* hotel in Sault

30km or 51 km with total uphill 650 and 1220m - Estimated time: between 3 and 6 hours (depending on the stage chosen)

This ride takes you through the heart of the lavender region and its charming hamlets. You'll climb up to the viewpoint at Le Rède, the high point of the route, from where you can contemplate Mont Ventoux overlooking the Nesque gorges. If you're feeling brave, you can also climb Mont Ventoux, a legendary mountain pass that has attracted amateur and professional cyclists since the invention of the bicycle!

42 km stage with total uphill 200m. Around 3hrs30. One of the pleasures of today's ride is that the profile shows that there is more downhill than uphill. (You've earned it!) You'll have time to enjoy a visit to the hilltop village of Montbrun les Bains and why not take in a little detour to see Buis-les-Baronnies, whose shady terraces lend this popular borough an undeniable charm.

Departure after breakfast.

Cycle Tour through France's lavender

When the Good Lord begins to doubt the world, he remembers that he created Provence.

French Nobel Prize Winner, Literature

DAY 1. Arrival in Avignon

Impressive, that is Provence’s Avignon. If you grew up hearing the child’s song “A Sur le pont d’Avignon” (On the Avignon bridge) well, this is that place. Seat of the Popes for 400 years, it has imprinted this stately town with some important monuments and it is a great place to prepare for your Southern French bike trip. Take in the Cathedral, Notre-Dame de Doms D’Avignon and the Palais des Papes (Pope`s Palace) and wander into the very cool soaring interior. Often the site of some excellent art exhibits, the view from its ramparts is wonderful. And of course, if you are still humming the song, take a ramble down to the river and visit the bridge. You will receive all bike tour information upon check-in at the hotel. Please, ask for it at reception.

DAY 2. Bedoin or Mazan (loop ride)

RIDE: 67 km | Ascent: 560 m Or: 78 km | Ascent: 920 m Start your cycling adventure in Provence by being transferred to Bédoin, and receive your bike there. There is an option, if you like a more difficult ride, to cycle a loop around the wild landscape of the Dentelles de Montmirail , It is a challenging loop of rocky mountain terrain, reminiscent of the backbone of some primeval giant! What a delicious day, you have today. Pedal through the most famous wine-producing villages of La Provence . The first being Beaumes-de-Venise , an ancient village where one of the most famous wines worldwide is produced, the Muscat de Beaumes de Venise. . Some others cycled through today will also be lovely Vacqueyras, Gigondas and Séguret , which hugs a hillside and has the impressive moniker of being one of the prettiest villages in France with its enchanting cobbled streets and spilling flowerpots. You will also pass by Vaison-la-Romaine . This town indeed has a rich Roman heritage represented by the impressive remains of Villasse and Puymin. Covering 15 hectares, they are evidence of the ancient Gallo-Roman city of Vasio, forming France’s biggest archaeological site! Continue your day on to the optional ride to sweet little hillside clinging Suzette (1,080 m), and add 20 km to the day’s ride and a few meters up! You will also have the option to ride 10 km more from Bédoin to Mazan to finish this good day’s ride.

DAY 3. Mazan to Sault via Mont Ventoux or via the Gorges de la Nesque

RIDE: 41 km | Ascent: 920mOr: 61 km | Ascent:: 1930 m Very exciting day on the bike today. This is France’s epic cycling climb, that all road cyclists will love. If you are keen to take on a mountain, give the cycle up the Giant of Provence, Mont Ventoux a go! It is one of the most famous climbs in Europe and has been part of the worldwide known Tour de France 15 times now. Scene of many a TdF battle, it is impressive at 1909m high and you can see its windswept recognizable summit for miles around in Provence, its stark white communications tower, always illusive and higher up then you would wish as you cycle up to it! The sobering memorial to TdF rider, Tom Simpson, who died there, is worth a stop on the way just to remind yourself, at what a dramatic stage Mont Ventoux is. However, once at the top, what a view and a gorgeous descent through the fir tree forests that crowd its base. Chapeau! Or, if you wish another beautiful option, cycle through the Gorges de la Nesque , a very picturesque winding road through rocky tunnels and beautiful viewpoints. The gorges, home to wildlife such as boar, deer and many types of raptors is a very alluring bike ride to experience and you will enjoy this surprisingly quite wild landscape carved millions of years ago by the raging river below. Your home for tonight is Sault , a very little town atop a bump in the landscape, and just 26km away from the top of Mont Ventoux. Surrounded by fields of purple lavender, it seems its cobbled streets, are lusciously aromatic.

DAY 4. Sault to Fontaine-de-Vaucluse

RIDE: 60 km | Ascent: 610 m A rolling day through this most traditional of Provence’s villages, awash with clear sunlight, scented vineyards, lush orchards and green gardens. Who wants to go back to reality when this too could be yours! Dreams abound here in Provence of this bucolic life and especially on this trip. Enjoy this very entrancing cycle ride highlighting some of the best of Southern France’s allure. Arrive in ancient Venasque , one of France’s most “beautiful villages” and oldest, this striking white stone village hugs a hillside, located in the Monts de Vaucluse region and is a nice stop for a snack. Continue cycling to Fontaine-de-Vaucluse , a charming town set in a steep valley. It’s an emblematic spot in Provence. Cycle along the River Sorgue, which has one of the highest flow rates in the world. Its lovely old town with its 11th-century Romanesque church and a medieval castle perched on a rocky peak whose ruins overlook the village is a delight. As is the paper mill which still produces paper and has done, since the 15th century!

DAY 5. Fontaine-de-Vaucluse to Gargas

RIDE: 38 km | Ascent: 720 mOr: 53 km | Ascent:: 1,020 m A great day of cycling today with a first stop in the gorgeous village of Gordes . If you haven’t decided yet to sell up and spend the rest of your days here, you might now! It is located just at the heart of the Luberon Regional Nature Park , and is a picture postcard village full of charm. It’s a very striking spot, where in the warm summers, the close-set stone homes provide shadowy shade in the quaint cobbled stone narrow alleyways. Enjoy amazing views from its iconic 11th century castle set high above the spreading patchwork quilt of lavender and green fields. Another place that shouldn’t be missed on the way is Sénanque Abbey , really a must-see monument. Cistercian monks still live there, and follow St. Benedict’s belief, that “Idleness is the enemy of the soul” and so are busy with their apiary, lavender fields, etc and sell their essential oils, olive oil and honey to passers-by in order to help in the upkeep of the Abbey. You will now note, the change in the soil colour to shades of a deep reddish orange to pink, which is pleasingly photogenic and is evident through places like Menerbes, Lacoste and Bonnieux. Arrive in Roussillon , set atop the countryside, with homes, colourfully pastel with their shutters and scenic streets. A lovely spot to sit in the main square and have a drink and watch the world go by. Cycle next to your magnificent hotel in Gargas where you can enjoy your last moments of tranquillity in this wonderful cycling country!

DAY 6. Onwards travels from Avignon

Awake to birdsong in this pretty spot before your transfer to Avignon to finish this trip and to make your onward journey to other parts of La Belle France. Merci and à bientôt!

You will always have a few hours in the afternoon to relax and explore your surroundings before we meet for a dinner of delicious local fare.

Transfer to Hotel and Afternoon Ride

Your guided Alpe d’Huez-Ventoux cycling tour begins at Lyon airport, where we will pick you up and transport you to Le Pic Blanc, our 4-star hotel on Alpe d’Huez . After setting up your bikes and taking a “shake-out” spin, we will have a ‘welcome dinner’ in the hotel restaurant and talk about the amazing rides to come.

Rider on switchback of Alpe d'Huez

Ride: Col de la Croix de Fer / Col du Glandon. Approximately 76 km and 1800 m of ascent.

Our first ride takes us across the quiet ‘balcony road’ to the west of Alpe d’Huez before descending to the Barrage du Verney, where we begin to climb our first big col. The ride up to the  Col de la Croix de Fer  is long, with some steep stretches, but the views that hit you once you exit into the high alpine meadows near the top are more than worth the effort. The  Col du Glandon is a short jog off the main climb, with magnificent views down into the Maurienne Valley.

Ride: Alpe d’Huez. Approximately 50 km and 1800 m of ascent.

A Tour de France victory on Alpe d’Huez immortalizes a pro cyclist, as is evidenced by the names of its conquerors on each and every 21 hairpin turn. You will be following in the pedal strokes of  Fausto Coppi, Bernard Hinault and Thibault Pinot  on The Alpe, but before we get to it you have a wonderfully-scenic ride along the ‘eastern balcony’, before descending down to the valley floor where the climb of Alpe d’Huez begins.

Ride: Col du Lautaret, Col du Galibier. Approximately 108 km and 2300 m of ascent.

Today’s ride takes you deep into the history of the Tour de France, climbing two cols that have been mainstays of Le Tour since 1911. The  Col du Galibier  is also one of the highest passes in the Alps (2645 m) and the highest ever stage finish in the Tour de France (in 2011).

Transfer to Provence and Afternoon Ride. Approximately 40 km and 600 m of ascent.

After transferring from the Alps to our charming  Provençal hotel in Malaucène , we’ll head into the hills north of Mont Ventoux. Here you’ll experience real backcountry riding on deserted roads that lead to hidden villages. Often overlooked, this area will have you begging to come back and explore further.

Cycling group in the Dentelles

Ride: Mont Ventoux. Approximately 74 km and 2000 m of ascent.

After a scenic warm-up ride through the picturesque  Dentelles Mountains  we will attack Mont Ventoux from the cycling-mad village of Bédoin, just like the Tour de France pros do. This monumental climb is everything you will have hoped for and more.

Rie: Le Geant Loop. Approximately 100 km and 1600 m of ascent.

On our shortlist of favorite rides in the area, this  long loop around the base of Mont Ventoux  is one of the most varied hundred kilometers you will ever ride. Highlights include stunning gorges, lush lavender fields, hilltop villages and stunning perspectives of  Le Geant de Provence  from all sides. A perfect way to finish off a fantastic tour.

Made famous by the Tour de France in 1951, the climb of Mont Ventoux by bike is an unmissable challenge for hardcore cyclists.

The 360° panorama from the top is the ultimate reward for all that effort… To get there, there are 3 possible routes. The climb from Bédoin is the most technical itinerary with a difference in altitude of 1,622 metres on a 22.7 km climb to reach the top! To try other routes, experienced cyclists can also access Mont Ventoux by bike from the villages of Sault or Malaucène. In good weather conditions, it’s even possible to catch sight of Mont Blanc on the horizon!

Climb summary by PJAMM’s John Johnson.

One of the “Big Four,” in our estimation, Mont Ventoux is on the same world renowned footing as Alpe d’Huez (although no climbs can match the fame of Alpe d’Huez), Tourmalet and Stelvio.  The traditional route up Mont Ventoux from Bédoin is extremely challenging (third hardest France, #137 World Climb), scenic, and quite unique in the upper third of the climb with its barren limestone mountains looking more like desert than alps.

Well, they don’t call it the Bald Mountain for nothing . . .

There are three paved routes (a 4th by mountain bike) to the top of this mighty mountain ( Map ), although the route from  Bédoin  is by far the most popular and well known.  The cycling climb of Mont Ventoux from Bédoin is also the most challenging of the climbs at 9.7 miles, 4,350’ feet, and 8.5% average grade.   Malaucene  is not far behind in difficulty at 13.2 miles/4,995 feet/7.2%, while Sault  is the “easiest” at 13.7 miles/3,549 feet/4.9%.

It can be a bit breezy at the top.

“Venteux” means windy in French, and this mountain climb certainly lives up to its moniker.  Particularly at the summit, wind speeds as high as 200 mph (320 km/h) have been noted, and “the wind blows at 90+ km/h (56+ mph) 240 days a year” ( Mont Ventoux - Wikipedia ).   Because of high winds, the road over the mountain is often closed, especially the "col des tempêtes" ("storm pass") just before the summit.  The true origins of this mountain’s name “are thought to trace back to the 1st or 2nd century AD, when it was named 'Vintur' after a Gaulish god of the summits, or 'Ven-Top', meaning "snowy peak" in the ancient Gallic language. In the 10th century, the names Mons Ventosus and Mons Ventorius appear” Mont Ventoux - Wikipedia .

  • #2 Col du Tourmalet  (bottom right)

  • #3 Passo dello Stelvio  (top left)
  • Highest finish of any Grand Tour -- Featured in Giro 13 times (1953-2022).

ICONIC RADIO TOWER ATOP MONT VENTOUX

One of the features of cycling Mont Ventoux that separates it from many of the other exceptional climbs of Europe is that its unique radio tower at the top is visible throughout the climb.  At times it seems this tower just refuses to grow any bigger no matter how fast we pedal!   SportActive.net  explains that this distinctive red and white building, resembling a lighthouse, was built in 1968 and is used as a meteorological station as well as to broadcast television signals.

Of the bike climb Mont Ventoux, SportActive.net also has an article called 7 Facts About Ventoux You May Not Know .  We recommend giving this informative article a read.

Le Chalet Reynard  is a cottage and restaurant at the junction of the Bédoin (9.3 miles) and Sault (11.3 miles) approaches of climbing Mont Ventoux.  From this landmark, it’s 3.8 miles, 1,560 feet at 7.8% to the top.

Many cyclists congregate at the top of the climb where there is plenty of great food to choose from.

MONT VENTOUX HAS TAKEN ITS TOLL ON TdF RIDERS LIKE NO OTHER

This climb first appeared in the Tour de France in 1951 when the race crossed, but did not finish, on its summit.  The first serious blow the mountain inflicted on riders was in 1955 when Swiss rider Ferdi Küble     (winner 1950 TdF) attacked 10 km from the summit and paid for it dearly. Ignoring the searing heat and steep grade, Kübler raced up the mountain only to seize up and have to dismount his bike well before the summit.  He eventually made it over the top, but had lost his lead and was a demoralizing 20 minutes behind the leaders. On the descent, Kübler crashed 3 times but ultimately made it to Avignon where he was observed entering a bar close to the stage finish and pounding down beer after beer.  After replenishing in the bar, Kübler mounted his bike and headed out in the opposite direction from the finish. That evening, Kübler called a press conference and retired on the spot - Ventoux had vanquished him.   Fotheringham, William,  put me back on my Bike, in Search of Tom Simpson  , Yellow Jersey Press, 2007, p. 199.

Another great rider had been crushed by Venoux on on the ‘55 stage - Frenchman Jean Malléjac  (2nd in 1953 and 9th overall on this day) keeled over on Ventoux, semi comatose and turning one pedal as he lay on the ground - he was never to race again.  Half a dozen other riders collapsed in the Ventoux furnace that day.  (Fotheringham, p. 199-200).

And then . . . there was 1967 and one of the greatest tragedies to occur during the Grand Tour. On July 13, 1967, during the 10th stage of the Tour de France, Tom Simpson (the charming Mister Tom and leader of the British team) had become ill (later his illness was traced to the substances of the day) but he pressed on, ultimately weaving desperately and collapsing on Ventoux.  The team mechanic, Harry Hall, pressed Simpson to stop, but he insisted on continuing, famously stating “Me straps, Harry, me straps!" (Fotheringham, 2007, pp. 34-35; he did not utter the more famous phrase “put me back on my bike” - those were invented by an overzealous journalist) and his manager Alec Taylor acquiesced.  Sadly, Mister Tom’s final turns of the pedal were over the next 500 meters and he soon collapsed and could not be resuscitated by,Tour doctor Pierre Dumas, the same physician who had tended to Jean Malléjac on Mont Ventoux 12 years earlier.

Days on the bike

Exactly the right balance of support and independence; luxury and relaxation; challenge and flexibility.

Introduction

Cycling in Provence is a dream! With its extensive network of quiet roads, pretty villages, fields of lavender, deep gorges and turquoise reservoirs, it’s a glorious destination for a cycling holiday. Throw in Mont Ventoux, one of the most well-known mountains in the world of cycling, and this tour really does have it all! Whilst typically popular with touring cyclists, this hidden gem of a region boasts some of the best cycling roads in all of France, peppered with smaller cols and rolling hills set in unique scenery. It’s stunning at worst and jaw-dropping at best.

For the first half of the week, you’ll explore the area around the river Verdon that runs east to west between the departments of the Var and the Alpes de Haute Provence. Its sun-baked limestone hills have been cut through by rivers running down from the Alps, creating magnificent deep canyons, most notably the Verdon Gorge. At over 20 km long and 300 metres deep it is the deepest gorge in Europe and provides as dramatic a backdrop as you could wish for. Ticking off cols as you go, you then head towards Mont Ventoux, which you have the chance to conquer! After a day in the saddle, the beautiful hotel in Malaucene awaits. You’re based here for the remainder of your holiday, enjoying dinner in the centre of town, before retreating to the calm ambience of the hotel’s private grounds.

The climate is perfect for cycling during the Spring and Autumn when the hoards of tourists that visit Provence won’t be competing with you for space on the tarmac. With two route choices each day, this holiday offers the same flexibility as our other Marmot Classic tours. Despite the terrain being more undulating than mountainous (the Ventoux ascent being an obvious exception!), on the daily Challenge route, there are plenty of tougher options if that’s what you’re after. Our two skilled guides with fully customised support vehicles are there to provide you with exceptional support on the road. While this is a group holiday, they are adept at treating you as an individual and helping you achieve your personal goals.

For more inspiration, you can head over to our YouTube channel to watch our video of this truly remarkable French cycling tour in Provence.

Day 0: Arrival day

We offer included transfers from Marseille Airport (MRS) and Aix-en-Provence TGV train station to our hotel in Meyreuil (just to the east of Aix-en-Provence). This is a journey of about 30min.

Full travel advice ( essential reading before booking your flights ) and airport transfer timings can be found in our Trip Notes .

Meet your guides, transfer to the hotel, assemble your bikes and perhaps go for a pre-dinner spin to loosen your legs ahead of the next day’s ride.

Day 1: Meyreuil to Moustiers-Sainte-Marie

Today’s ride offers you an introduction to the range of scenery the area has to offer – from charming, unspoilt villages to diverse forests.

Looking northwards from the hotel, the horizon is dominated by the magnificent Montagne Saint-Victoire with its sheer limestone cliffs. Our route climbs to its base on a great road with ever-increasing views. From here we enjoy a sweeping descent and start undulating our way through beautiful countryside towards our hotel in Moustiers-Sainte-Marie on the edge of the Verdon National Park.

As always on a Marmot Classic tour, you have daily options for extending your cycling. Early in the day, you can detour over the Col des Portes (631m) and the Col du Grand-Sambuc (615m) via the Gorges Vauvenargues. Later, there is the option of a wonderful little road that undulates its way up the Verdon River linking its many lakes. The ride can also be made easier with a tactical transfer in one of the vans after lunch.

Easier route: 76km with 1000m ascent Classic route: 108km with 1450m ascent [ ride profile ] Harder route: 115km with 1750m ascent [ ride profile ] Challenge route: 143km with 2300m ascent  [ ride profile ]

Day 2: Day ride into the Verdon Gorge

Considered by many to be the most beautiful canyon in Europe, the Verdon Gorge is genuinely breathtaking. The road that hugs the cliffs of the gorge is an amazing feat of engineering and today you get to appreciate every km of it! With sheer drops to the side of over 500m, big views, and some sneaky climbs, today is set to be one of the most memorable rides of your life.

Warming up on the gentle slopes of the Source de Vaumale (1202m), you enter the gorge proper for some stunning pedalling. Road cycling really doesn’t get any better than this! You leave the gorge for a short while, but only to take in some of the surrounding highlights such as the forgiving slopes of Col d’Ayen (1031m), before returning to enjoy the magnificent gorge scenery and a fabulous descent.

Those choosing the Challenge option today head on to the incredible Route des Crêtes du Verdon (1320m), for yet more spectacular views.

Classic route: 89km with 1700m ascent [ ride profile ] Challenge route: 108km with 2300m ascent [ ride profile ]

Day 3: Moustiers-Sainte-Marie to Sisteron

You start today with a couple of minor undulations and a swift descent before the landscape eventually opens out to reveal wide-open plains of never-ending fields of lavender and sunflowers. Dominating the horizon is the ‘Giant of Provence’, Mont Ventoux; your ultimate destination. For those chasing the Challenge options, a visit to the region wouldn’t be complete without conquering Mt Ventoux’s ‘little sister’ – the Montagne de Lure at 1745m, offering spectacular views to the north into the Hautes-Alpes region.

Tonight we stay in the majestic pre-Roman town of Sisteron with its narrow cobbled streets and magnificent Vauban fortifications. With a somewhat ‘flatter’ day of cycling behind you, we foresee arriving with plenty of time to spare, allowing you to stretch your legs and experience some local culture in the pretty town.

Classic route: 102km with 1100m ascent [ ride profile ] Challenge route: 127km with 2300m ascent [ ride profile ]

Day 4: Sisteron to Malaucene and the vineyards of Gigondas

Today’s route takes you to the pretty village of Sault via the  Col de la Pigière (968m), and Col de Macuègne (1068m), which draw cyclists from far and wide for the alluring views of Mont Ventoux.

You leave Sault to join a winding narrow road that hugs the cliffs of the stunning Gorges de la Nesque , descending gently through a series of short tunnels hewn out of the rock. This road is one of the highlights of the region and attracts cyclists and photographers from miles around for its magnificent riding and views of the valley below. Once through the gorge, a few undulations take you via Bédoin to your hotel in Malaucène. There is no escaping the tough decisions you face now: to relax by the pool, meander into the centre of town, or tag on an additional 52km in the hills to the west on the ‘Gigondas’ loop – taking in some beautiful vineyards and rural villages and adding 700m of ascent. It’s your holiday and so the choice is yours!

The Hôtel Ventoux Provence is one of our firm favourites and we stay here for the next 3 nights.

Classic route: 116km with 1600m ascent [ ride profile ] Challenge route: 163km with 2300m ascent  [ ride profile ]

Day 5: Day ride from Malaucène - ‘Parc regional des Baronnies Provencales'

The routes we’ve crafted and outlined for days 5 & 6 are interchangeable, depending on the weather forecast. However, one thing is guaranteed – you’re going to have an amazing final two days out on your bike! The mountains to the north of Ventoux are often overlooked, but as you’ll discover, they are stunningly beautiful and offer exceptional cycling opportunities.

Our excursion into the Parc Regional des Baronnies Provencales takes you over the Côte de Bluye (578m), whilst the Challenge route detours early in the ride to take on the  Col du Perty  (1302m) and the  Col St-Jean (1158m).

Classic route: 98km with 1300m ascent [ ride profile ] Challenge route: 145km with 2500m ascent [ride profile]

Day 6: Mont Ventoux

Mont Ventoux has featured heavily in the Tour de France since it was first included over 60 years ago. It became infamous when it claimed the life of the British rider Tom Simpson in 1967 and has since become a mecca for cyclists from all over the world wanting to pitch body and mind against its iconic, arid, and rocky moonscape.

We’ll focus our attention today on the most popular sides of this iconic cycling climb, the ascents from Bédoin and Sault , before descending to Malaucène from the summit.

The Classic route takes on the ascent from Bédoin via the Col de Madeleine (451m). The Challenge route also climbs the Bédoin side via Col de Madeleine, before descending from the summit for a second ascent up from Sault.

Cycling Mont Ventoux: Bédoin route

Mont Ventoux Cycling Club logo

  • Epic rating

Just take a look at the stats for cycling Mont Ventoux via Bedoin: Bédoin-Mont Ventoux is 21.3 km long, it climbs 1,579 m, and its average gradient is 7.4%.

By way of comparison, L’Alpe d’Huez is 13.8 km at an average gradient of 7.9%.

Dylan from  Mont Ventoux Cycling Club says, “ If you’re only riding Mont Ventoux once, make it Bédoin to Ventoux. It’s the route the Tour has taken 15 times, the one Tom Simpson died on, the iconic climb that everyone will assume you’re doing if you tell them you’re cycling Mont Ventoux. It’s on all the “top rides” lists.”

This is a ride that truly deserves its place in the epic rides hall of fame.

All metrics in this article are approximate.

Highlights of Mont Ventoux (Bédoin)

Leaving the forest and coming out into the white lunar landscape, is incredible. The sun on the white rocks is dazzling after the relative dark of the forest. You can see the hairpins stretching ahead of you, and it feels both exhilarating and daunting.

Route notes

1. the easy warm-up: 0-5.5km:.

You leave Bédoin on an open, relatively gentle road through vineyards, olive groves and cherry orchards. After about 3.5km you pass through Saint Colombe, an attractive village with some hotels/B&Bs and a few restaurants.

2. The forest: 5.5-16km

After Les Bruns and the St Estève bend, you head up into the forest on a wiggly, merciless road through the forest.  The gradient rarely drops beneath 9%, the road is quite narrow, and sightlines are poor.

3. The lunar landscape: 16-21.5km

At Chalet Reynard, you leave the forest for an unforgettable six kilometres through the white rock to the summit. The gradient reduces for a few hundred metres as you leave Chalet Reynard, but be prepared for wind as you leave the trees; if you don’t get a brutal headwind, you’re lucky!

At around 20km, you pass the memorial to Tom Simpson, and many choose to make a stop here.

The road down can be hair-raising. The gradient is severe, the road is often wet, there are multiple hairpins and strong gusts of wind.

Spectacular views from the upper reaches of Ventoux's slopes

There are quite a few choices in Bedoin , at the start and end of your ride . Dylan fro m Mont Ventoux Cycling Club says hi s favourites are :

  • Pista Cycling Café ( map ) – for a r elaxed vibe and nice garden .
  • Le Flandrien ( map ) – perfect for a Belg ian beer or two after the ride!

On the way u p Ventoux , Chalet Reynard is a popular place to stop. It’s about seven kilometres before the summit, and it’s impossible to miss: there are some post-boxes at the side of the road, followed by wooden cabins and a sign for Chalet Reynard.

  • Chalet Reynard has a bar-restaurant with a decent indoor area with an open fireplace. There are also outdoor terraces. It serves simple food and drinks to predominantly cyclists and hikers and is open seven days a week.
  • Non-road cyclists might be interested in the Ventoux Bike Park at Chalet Reynard. It has a ski lift up to the start of three mountain biking trails. You can hire bikes at the restaurant. It’s open at weekends during the summer, weather permitting and is suitable for adults and children over the age of ten.
  • There is a reasonable amount of car parking outside the restaurant.

Lots of riders choose to pay their respects at the memorial to Tom Simpson, a few kilometres from the summit (on the righthand side). There is a water fountain near the Tom Simpson memorial.

At the summit, there is a restaurant that serves basic meals.

Accommodation

The town of Bédoin is the starting point for this route up Ventoux, and it has lots of accommodation options. You can find our hotel suggestions and tips on where to stay to ride Ventoux here .

Dylan from Mont Ventoux Cycling Club says “ Some of the outlying villages around Bédoin are also worth considering as bases as they’re quieter and less touristy. For example, Mormoiron and Villes -sur- Auzon are particularly well positioned as they are a good springboard to the Luberon , Gorges del la Nesque and yet within easy reach of Bédoin .”
