If you're looking for the ultimate moving picture that perfectly captures the essence of starry summer nights, Enderby's Starlight Drive-In Theatre is the place to go. An evening spent here will swirl you from modern-day bliss to some time in the 1950s, where soothing music and the crackle of the radio provided entertainment. The theatre shows two movies per night, typically one kid-friendly movie and a flick tailored for adults.

Whenever you plan to go (starting in May), you'll want to get there early to park your car close to the front of the screen. The parking spots fill up fast!

Gather the entire family, your friends, or head out on your own to the phenomenal Myra Canyon Trail, which stretches across 24.9 km , winding past 18 trestles and under two rock-formed tunnels. As you walk (or bike), you'll catch an unveiling of the rolling Okanagan Valley etched across the horizon!

The best part is that no one expects you to finish this lengthy out-and-back trail, especially if you have kids. There's also the option for families and those seeking a short but incredibly scenic hike to walk the first 3.0 km before turning around and heading back the way they came. You'll still get to check out six trestle bridges and one tunnel.

On average, most hikers turn around between the six and eight-km mark!

How to get to the Myra Canyon Trestles from Kelowna

The Myra Canyon Trestles are only a 30-minute drive from Kelowna! You'll want to head to the Myra Station Entrance. To get here, drive towards McCulloch Road. Eventually, you'll take a right to continue on McCulloch Road until turning right onto Myra Forest Service Road. Follow this road until you reach the parking area. Continue past the first parking lot, which is for overflow parking, and park in the second parking area.

The Caravan Farm Theatre has been an Okanagan Valley staple for a few decades now! Nothing beats professionals putting on entertaining, high-quality outdoor plays that use the surrounding natural materials as their props and the rural setting as their stage, making this a must-do day trip from Kelowna!

You can find the Caravan Farm Theatre situated near Armstrong, located just outside of Vernon. Before you view a show, why not check out the Farmstrong Cidery. The natural backdrop, lively but relaxing atmosphere, delicious ciders (and pizzas), and a play make for the perfect outing!

How to get to the Caravan Farm Theatre from Kelowna

To get to the Caravan Farm Theatre from Kelowna, head towards Okanagan Hwy/BC-97 N to Spallumcheen before taking a left onto Rosedale Avenue in Armstrong. Take a right onto Okanagan Street and stay on this street until taking a left onto Wood Avenue, which veers right, becoming Salmon River Road. Stay on Salmon River Road. Just after the Carmel of St. Joseph, you'll turn right, and you'll see your destination.

Welcome to the epitome of family-friendly fun! Located in Vernon, Davison Orchards has been an Okanagan family favourite for quite some time. Going to Davison Orchards mirrors the feelings you get when you go to grandma's house: warm, welcoming, wholesome. The cinnamon-fused smells swirling off of delicious freshly baked apple pies and the natural scents drifting from the orchard and pumpkin patch propel the type of relaxation that you can't buy at the spa. Of course, there are also screaming, happy children running around, but just think of their happy yells as another layer to this fun, family-centric atmosphere.

You'll find a range of activities to do when you're here—some of which depend on the season: explore the corn maze, admire the farm animals, take a tractor ride, pick a pumpkin from the pumpkin patch, wander the orchard, go apple picking, hit up the cozy Farmhouse Cafe, and eat a lot of delicious samples in the main building. Please don't leave here without buying the most incredible apple juice in the world (seriously, it's so good)!

How to get to Davison Orchards Country Village from Kelowna

To get to Davison Orchards from Kelowna, head to BC-97 N before turning left on 25th Avenue once you arrive in Vernon. 240 m later, turn right onto 34th Avenue and take a quick left onto 27th Avenue and continue for 1.1 km . Next, take a right onto 41st Street, followed by a quick left onto Bella Vista Road. Continue, and you'll see a sign directing you to the parking lot for Davison Orchards! The drive from Kelowna to Davison Orchards takes about 45 minutes.

Kalamalka Lake's aquamarine hues create a postcard-perfect picture of summer, attracting several visitors each year. While several locals and summer home visitors explore the lake via motorboat, others enjoy stopping at KalaVida Surf Shop in Vernon, a quaint spot just across the main beach, Kal Beach, and rent paddleboards for a one-hour timeslot or the entire day. You might as well stop and get a treat from the Rail Trail Cafe while you're there! Lastly, Make sure you pack sunscreen 'cause the rays will beat up your skin—Okanagan summer heat is no joke!

How to get to Kal Lake from Kelowna

Follow BC-97 N before turning right onto College Way. Take another right onto Kalamalka Road, followed by a right turn, and a quick left to reach the KalaVida Surf Shop on your left. If you’re going to the beach first, park in the designated parking lot across from the beach (it’s a little tricky to get there if you’re going for the first time, so ask a local for directions). You can also parallel park slightly further up from the beach near Alexander’s Pub —another great place to grab grub after your SUP experience.

Kelowna and the surrounding Okanagan Valley boast of never-ending year-round activities; however, there's another scenic gem, a more intimidating, dramatic one, rich with outdoor adventures worth exploring: Monashee Provincial Park.

Monashee Provincial Park sits just over two hours from Kelowna. Still, avid hikers and backpackers will see the drive as worthwhile after immersing in the carved-out trails leading to unbelievable mountainous views, where lakes sit nestled in peaks and soaring vistas stretch across the horizon. Some hikes we recommend are Monashee Lake Trail, Spectrum Lake Hike, and Twin Lakes.

How to get to Monashee Provincial Park from Kelowna

The hikes above all lead to different spots, so we will choose the route we highly recommend: Spectrum Lake Hike (also a great backpacking destination). To get to the start of the Spectrum Lake Hike from Kelowna, head out towards Vernon, where you'll meet up with BC-6. Follow this highway to Sugar Lake Road and keep driving past Cherryville after you veer slightly right to remain on Sugar Lake Road. Continue until you reach the turn-off for Monashee Provincial Park. Follow this dusty, dirt road for around 11.0 km , which takes you to the parking lot, where the trailhead awaits.

Talk about the perfect activity to do when the weather is hot (just make sure to pile on the sunscreen)! A popular spot for floating near Kelowna is the Penticton River Channel , a human-made channel that bridges the Okanagan Lake and Skaha Lake. It stretches across 7.0 km , and you're definitely guaranteed a good time. Just come prepared, know your water safety, blow up your floaties, and you're good to go. This activity sits high on the best day trips from Kelowna list.

How to get to Penticton from Kelowna

To get to the starting point for floating the Penticton River Channel, you'll want to head to the launch site at Riverside Drive and park another car near Skaha Lake as the float ends near the Highway 97 bridge near Skaha Lake. It's dangerous to float in Skaha Lake from the river, so avoid this! You can also ring a taxi and get a ride back to your car this way.

From Kelowna, drive on BC-97 S before taking a left onto Riverside Drive. It takes between 45-50 minutes to get to the launch site from Kelowna.

While Kelowna boasts of an explosion of world-class wineries, there are a couple of classy, scenic wineries dotting Lake Country, the incredibly stunning area nestled between Vernon and Kelowna, worth visiting. A handful of locals like to hop from winery to winery via bicycle!

One way you can do this is to drop one vehicle at Predator Ridge and another in the Kekuli Bay parking lot along the Okanagan Rail Trail. From Predator Ridge, bike to 50th Parallel before continuing to Gray Monk Winery . This is a great place to stop for a snack as the patio overlooks Okanagan Lake. You'll be happy to know that the next two wineries are right beside each other: Ex Nihilo (another great place to eat) and Arrowleaf Cellars , where you can enjoy a picnic, one of their tasty bottles of wine, while you bask in one of the best views in the Okanagan! From here, head towards the Okanagan Rail Trail and bike along a flat path towards your vehicle at the Kekuli Bay parking lot.

This self-guided cycle wine tour boasts of a lot of undulations, propelling a high heart rate. If you're expecting a flat, comfortable journey, this isn't it!

How to get to Predator Ridge from Kelowna

We will guide you to Predator Ridge since our suggested self-guided bike tour starts from here! To get to Predator Ridge from Kelowna, you'll head to BC-97 N. After 19.7 km , take a left onto Bailey Road and follow this for 1.7 km . Next, turn left onto Commonage Road. Follow this until you reach the roundabout, where you'll take the 3rd exit onto Predator Ridge Drive! It takes around 45 minutes to get to Predator Ridge from Kelowna.

Okay. This isn't a day trip, but houseboating on The Shuswap is something to consider if you plan to head to Kelowna for a summer vacation, especially if you're coming from the east since you'll pass by Sicamous, the Houseboat Capital of Canada, en route to Kelowna. Just type 'Shuswap houseboating' into Google, and a surplus of rental companies will pop up.

How to get to Sicamous from Kelowna

If you're heading in from Kelowna, go to BC-97 N and continue onto BC-97 A. In Sicamous, turn left onto Kappel Street before taking a right onto Riverside Avenue. When you reach the roundabout, continue straight. Shortly after, take a left onto Finlayson Street, followed by another left onto Young Crescent. You'll see your destination on the left! It takes around 1 hour and 45 minutes to get to The Marina in Sicamous from Kelowna.

That's right—there's another lake worth exploring in the Okanagan Valley! Most tourists (and locals) head to the glistening Okanagan Lake, the houseboat-centric Shuswap Lake, the bright blue-green Kalamalka Lake in Vernon, and the small but convenient Wood Lake in Lake Country! But you'll find a splash of lakes tucked into the hills, the Monashees, and all over, basically. If you're looking for a quieter but incredibly scenic front country lake for top-notch boating, wakeboarding, water skiing, and mid-lake picnics, head to Mabel Lake! And nothing beats the tree-laden high hills flanking Mabel Lake. You can even turn this day trip into an overnight camping adventure and stay at the popular Mabel Lake Provincial Park .

If you dock at the provincial park campground, it's a must to boat towards Mabel Lake Resort & Marina, where the ultimate picture of summer awaits (and excellent ice cream!).

How to get to Mabel Lake from Kelowna

To get to Mabel Lake from Kelowna, you'll need to drive towards Mabel Lake Provincial Park. You'll take BC-97 N towards Vernon, BC, where you'll connect with BC-6. Continue moving towards Lumby. Shortly after Lumby, take a left onto Rawlings Lake Road and continue for 4.8 km . Turn right onto Lumby-Mabel Lake Road. After 19.8 km , take a left to stay on the same road before taking another left to stay on Lumby-Mabel Lake Road. Continue until you reach the provincial park, where you'll turn and drive towards the lake, where a parking lot awaits. It takes around two hours to get to Mabel Lake from Kelowna.

Just think of Silver Star Mountain Resort as Big White's underrated, charming sister that deserves to be known! Situated only over 20 minutes from downtown Vernon, Silver Star Mountain Resort boasts of breathtaking scenery, the most lovely mountain village, and an explosion of family-friendly activities, ski runs, and hiking routes. Just before you reach Silver Star Mountain, you'll wind by the postcard-painted Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre , where a wealth of cross-country skiing trails criss-cross through lanes of snow-covered trees.

Go skiing, skating, tubing, snowshoeing at Silver Star in winter, and hiking and mountain biking in the summer!

How to get to Silver Star Mountain Resort from Kelowna

To get to Silver Star Mountain Resort from Kelowna, drive along BC-97 N and head towards Silver Star Road once you reach Vernon. Follow the winding road until you reach Silver Star Mountain!

This day trip from Kelowna gives the chance to explore the Okanagan at a slower pace, allowing more time to appreciate the valley, lakes, and flanking hillsides. You can choose your starting point along the Rail Trail and go for as long as you want. The full-length route runs from Kelowna to Vernon and vice versa, but check for closures before you go. We advise starting from the Kalamalka Lake trailhead in Vernon and going to Oyama and back. You'll pass Kal Lake and Wood Lake en route, granting several opportunities to stop and dip in the water before continuing! Cycling might be your best option if you're going a long-distance route, but it's also a fun route to walk or run.

How to get to the Rail Trail from Kelowna

Follow BC-97 N and then go right onto College Way, a few minutes before downtown Vernon, followed by another right onto Kalamalka Road. Continue driving past the Rail Trail Cafe, with Kalamalka Lake on your left, swerving by some extravagant beachfront homes. You'll reach the parking lot within a couple of minutes of passing the Rail Trail Cafe. You can also start at Wood Lake in Oyama or Kelowna—it's up to you!

Types of day trips

Really, a day trip is any mini-trip you complete in a day… Just like the name says! While I’m all for taking an entire weekend to adventure and explore, it’s just not always going to fit into the calendar.

Here are some of my favorite reasons to plan a day trip when I can’t head out for an entire weekend:

  • Foraging trips
  • Hiking trips
  • Just a little heads-up – Most of the day trips that I write about are from the Okanagan region of British Columbia. I’ll also likely share day trips from Toronto, Ontario, where I lived during my master’s degree, and from Guadalajara in Jalisco, Mexico, where I will be living as of August this year (and lived in for a year during my undergrad). So, keep your eyes out for those!

Things to keep in mind while planning day trips

Whether you’re heading into the bush for some foraging, are planning a day hike, or are packing up the car for a fun day of sightseeing, there are some basic things to keep in mind!

Here are my suggestions.

An elderberry bush with green foliage and dark berries.

1. Day trips & foraging

Foraging probably requires the most prep, since you need to know what you’re foraging, where it is, and which supplies you will need. Be sure to also think about the type of cover you’re foraging in… Especially if it’s stinging nettle season! And, on that note… If you’re unsure, pack the long-sleeved shirt and pants. Trust me, if you hit nettle in shorts, you’ll regret not wearing the pants.

Planning your foraging day trips

  • Research what you are foraging . Be sure you know how to identify the plant or medicine, are aware of dangerous look-alikes, and take time to understand how to forage the item responsibly.
  • Bring something to hold your goods in. Bring a little bag or container so your goods aren’t wrecked on the way home!
  • If heading into the bush, pack the essentials and let someone know where you’re going. For me, foraging and hiking often go hand-in-hand. If that’s true for you, be sure to pack your 10 essentials and your favorite foraging book!

Researching local foraging spots

It’s important you are always foraging responsibly. Make sure that you have permission, if required, that you do not over-harvest anything (take only what you need and never the first!), and that you are certain what you are taking is safe to consume. And, of course, always leave no trace.

Another thing to keep in mind is how you can give back to the earth for what it gave you. Clean up any debris you find in the area, give water to dehydrated plants, or try to repair damage if there is any. This is the simplest way to thank the Earth for the food and medicine it is providing you.

New to the idea of foraging? Check out my post here: A beginners guide to foraging: What you need to know . And, for recipes using foraged goods (or goods from a forage garden), head over to my recipes section !

2. Hiking trips

Day trips require quite a bit less planning than an overnight or through-hike, but it’s still important to be prepared! No matter how close the hike is, how long or short, you need to be prepared to encounter wildlife and changing environmental conditions.

Learn how I prepare and pack for the trail in my post Hiking 101: A beginner’s guide to enjoying the trail .

Combining hiking and foraging

Like I said, when I’m hiking is my favorite time to forage! For that reason, I usually have a spare mesh produce bag in my pack in case I come across anything I want to bring home. I also always carry my Swiss Army knife.

A woman in a white dress walking down a row of flowers at a flower farm.

3. Sightseeing

The lowest prep activity is sightseeing! Check out local events, historical landmarks, or cultural activities in your local area or wherever you are visiting.

Here are some local things I always look for when visiting somewhere new to me:

  • Local nature trails and parks
  • Historical landmarks like buildings, environmental spaces, or places of cultural relevance
  • Museums and art galleries
  • Unique environmental landmarks like lakes, mountains, rivers, etc
  • Local markets and diners
  • Try out local food that is specific to the region
  • Current events, especially music, cultural events, or fun things to experience like flower farms
  • Local breweries, wineries, or distilleries

Coming soon – I’ll come back to this post in the near future to add my favorite local events and landmarks to visit in the Okanagan and surrounding area, so check back!

Exploring your surroundings

I find the best way to see somewhere new is to chat with the locals about what’s worth seeing in the area. Often when I stop for a bite to eat I’ll chit chat with the restaurant employees. Or, if traveling, I always prefer to spend a few nights in a hostel as this is where I’ve heard about some of the best adventures I’ve been on.

There are also always city centers that you can pop into, too, though these are often promoting the national parks and current events (which are fun, too!). Personally, I prefer to hang out and eat where the locals do. That’s why I often veer away from touristy spaces. That being said, if you’re a tourist… Enjoy the role! Some things are touristy for a reason and are totally worth seeing.

Exploring local culture and history

The biggest thing for me is experiencing local culture and history (as well as local food and drink, of course). When visiting a land that is new to you, try to soak up the rich history by visiting museums or heading on a local walking tour.

Walking tours are a great way to learn about the area you’re visiting, especially in larger cities. They’re often free or by donation, too, which works if you’re traveling on a budget.

Making the most of your day trip

I firmly believe that the best trips are experienced with a balance of planning and heat-of-the-moment adventure. Depending on your travel style, you may prefer to have diligent plans or be totally go-with-the-flow. Honestly, honor whatever works for you! If a strict schedule stresses you out, don’t bother with it.

What I usually do when heading somewhere new is write a list of my top attractions or places to visit. Then I’ll schedule generous gaps in between, allowing for changes of plans should something different come up. This way, I don’t have FOMO since I know what I want to see and I have space to pencil in things I didn’t even consider exploring.

Again, honor your needs and do what works for you – There’s no sense stressing yourself out on a trip by over or under-planning what you’re comfortable with.

Time management and planning tips

On the note of day travel planning and organization, here are some tips to follow when planning day trips.

Planning Tips

  • Decide on your destination and research ahead of time to see what activities or sights you want to see.
  • Check the weather forecast and plan accordingly.
  • I remember once we were visiting Tofino, BC during the summer when there were road closures. If we didn’t plan around them, we could have spent an entire half-day stuck in traffic. Needless to say, it was worth getting up at 6 AM to beat the traffic delays…
  • Make reservations ahead of time if needed (such as for popular tourist attractions or restaurants).
  • Pack snacks, water, and any necessary equipment for activities you plan to do… And extra (just in case).

Time Management Tips

  • Listen, I’m not a morning person. But, I shove this aside when traveling (and make up for it in caffeine intake…). As bad as getting up early may sound to you, there are lots of things you can do on day trips with a few extra hours.
  • Stick to a schedule to ensure you have enough time for everything you want to do.
  • Prioritize your activities and start with the ones that are most important or time-sensitive.
  • Allow for some flexibility in your schedule in case things don’t go as planned.
  • Take breaks and rest when needed to avoid exhaustion.

Day trips in the Okanagan region of British Columbia

The Okanagan is and always will be home. Not just because I love my little hometown, but because it is centrally located for tons of amazing little day trips!

Here are some of my favorite cities and places to visit within the region.

  • Kelowna: Kelowna is a vibrant city in the Okanagan region that offers many attractions such as beaches, parks, and wineries. Visit the Kelowna Farmers’ and Crafters’ Market, hike Knox Mountain Park, or take a winery tour.
  • Penticton: Penticton is a picturesque town located in the southern Okanagan Valley. Enjoy a day at the beach at Skaha Lake or Okanagan Lake, go for a bike ride along the Kettle Valley Rail Trail, or visit the Okanagan Falls wineries.
  • Vernon: Vernon is a small city located in the North Okanagan Valley. Visit the historic O’Keefe Ranch, hike the BX Falls Trail, or explore the local art scene at the Vernon Public Art Gallery. One of my favorite things to do here in the summer is to hit the beach – The stunning turquoise lakes are incredible.
  • Osoyoos: Osoyoos is a popular tourist destination in the southern Okanagan Valley known for its warm climate and beautiful beaches. Go for a swim at Osoyoos Lake, hike the Haynes Point Provincial Park, or visit the Nk’Mip Desert Cultural Centre.
  • Kamloops: Kamloops is a city located in the Thompson River Valley north of the Okanagan region. Visit the Kamloops Museum and Archives, hike the Kamloops Heritage Trail, or explore the local art scene at the Kamloops Art Gallery.

Day trips in the Kootenays of British Columbia

And, if I had to move anywhere else, I would move out to the Kootenays. I absolutely love getting up early and taking day trips out this way, as there are so many funky little towns and so much natural beauty to explore.

Here are some of my favorite places to visit in the Kootenay region:

  • Nelson: Nelson is a charming small town located on the west arm of Kootenay Lake. Visit the historic Baker Street, hike the Pulpit Rock Trail, or explore the local art scene at the Touchstones Nelson Museum of Art and History. There are also some incredible snowshoeing trails in the winter months.
  • Creston: Creston is a picturesque town located in the Creston Valley. Visit the Kootenay Wildlife Heritage Centre, hike the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area trails, or take a scenic drive along the Kootenay Loop.
  • Castlegar: Castlegar is a city located at the confluence of the Kootenay and Columbia Rivers. Visit the Doukhobor Discovery Centre, hike the Waldie Island Trail, or go fishing at Lower Arrow Lake.
  • Kimberley: Kimberley is a town located in the Purcell Mountains. Visit the Kimberley Heritage Museum, hike the Marysville Falls Trail, or take a scenic drive along the Kootenay Rockies Circle Tour. The wildlife and natural beauty is awe-inspiring.
  • Fernie: Fernie is a small city located in the Elk Valley. Visit the Fernie Museum, hike the Mt. Fernie Provincial Park trails, or go mountain biking at Fernie Alpine Resort. If you’re there in winter, take advantage of the snowboarding and skiing trails at the Alpine Resort, too.
  • Revelstoke: Home to most of my favorite hiking trails and filled with adorable local shops, a vibrant music scene, and a great place for winter sports, Revelstoke is one of the main attractions for tourists in the summer and winter alike.

In conclusion, British Columbia’s Okanagan and Kootenay regions offer a plethora of opportunities for unforgettable day trips. Whether you’re looking to forage for wild berries, greens, and mushrooms, hike through picturesque mountain landscapes, or take a scenic drive along winding roads, there’s something for everyone.

The Okanagan region is known for its stunning vineyards, beaches, and quaint towns, while the Kootenay region offers rugged wilderness and charming small towns. No matter where you choose to explore, these day trips are sure to leave you feeling rejuvenated and inspired.

Weather in Kelowna

Although the weather in Kelowna is some of the best you will find in Canada year round, most people tend to visit Kelowna in the summer.

Summers in Kelowna are absolutely divine!

Here the weather is nice and hot, but you don’t have the humidity that eastern cities like Toronto and Montreal are used to.

Planning a trip to Kelowna soon? This guide covers all the best things to do in Kelowna from a locals perspective! From wineries and cideries, to adventure activities, hikes, waters sports and more. This guide has everything you need to plan your visit to beautiful Kelowna!

During summertime in Kelowna, you can easily expect temperatures to be in the mid twenties all the way up to the forties (celsius of course).

Dress for warm weather if you’re coming in the summer!

Spring in Kelowna is also a beautiful time to visit.

During spring you can expect temperatures from 15 degrees all the way up to the mid twenties.

Although, during El Nino years spring has been colder so be sure to bring layers and check the forecast.

Fall in Kelowna is gorgeous, and tends to be much longer than fall in other parts of Canada.

Due to the warmer weather you really get to experience a full month or even more of the leaves changing colors.

Like spring, the temperature during fall in Kelowna can vary anywhere from 10 degrees to 25 degrees or so.

Lastly, winters in Kelowna are quite mild.

Temperatures don’t often fall below zero, and although there is snow there is never a ton of it (well, at least to Alberta standards).

There is of course plenty of things to do in Kelowna even in winter !

Wineries are almost all open, and of course there are lots of outdoor winter activities to do here like skiing, snowboarding, and skating.

By the way, I have a whole guide to things to do in Kelowna in winter so be sure to check it out!

Getting Around Kelowna

It is best if you’re visiting Kelowna to have a vehicle because a lot of activities and destinations are spread out.

If you are planning on staying in downtown Kelowna you could get by without a car, however there is just so much to see outside of the downtown core.

If you will be visiting wineries during your stay in Kelowna (which is one of the best things to do in Kelowna!), you will especially want to plan to have transportation.

A lot of wineries in Kelowna are quite spread out and require driving between them.

If you don’t want to drive, one of the best and easiest ways to enjoy a day of winery hopping is to book a wine tour.

Wine tours will give you a designated driver that will take you from winery to winery meaning you won’t have to worry about how much you drink or where you’re going!

day trips from kelowna bc

There are also a few wineries you can visit by bike, but I would highly recommend to either travel with a designated driver or book a wine tour to really get the best out of your visit.

The Kelowna or West Kelowna Afternoon Sightseeing Wine Tour is easily the highest rated wine tour in the area.

This incredible wine tour gives you the option of touring 4 of the best wineries in Kelowna, or 4 of the best wineries in West Kelowna, and it’s totally up to you to pick!

Now, onto the guide of the best things to do in Kelowna!

6. Taste Wine at Quails Gate Estate Winery

Address: 3303 Boucherie Rd

Quail’s Gate Estate Winery is one of Canada’s first family owned estate wineries, and really is an institution in Kelowna because of its history.

Visiting Quail's Gate Winery - a top attraction and one of my favourite things to do in Kelowna

The Stewart family who owns it has been in the viticulture business for 60 years, and Quail’s Gate has been around for 30 of those years!

We visit Quail’s Gate Estate Winery almost every time we are in Kelowna.

Quail’s Gate has one of the most beautiful views from their tasting room, you definitely don’t want to miss seeing it!

They also have numerous tasting options available , from their standard tasting to their vineyard tasting, wine and cheese tasting, and even a wine and bourbon paired tasting!

7. Have lunch (or dinner) at Old Vines Restaurant

There are a few really great wineries that have amazing restaurants for lunch in Kelowna , and Quail’s Gate is the first on this list!

Quail's Gate Winery is the perfect daytime activity to do while in Kelowna

After visiting their beautiful vineyard and doing a tasting in their tasting room, you have to stop for lunch at Old Vines Restaurant.

Old Vines Restaurant is a stunning restaurant with incredible views.

Not only is it beautiful, but it’s one of the original wineries in West Kelowna and is consistently top-ranked in the Okanagan.

I absolutely love having lunch at Old Vines Restaurant, and it truly is one of the best winery restaurants.

By the way, I have a whole guide on best wineries in Kelowna for lunch if you’re looking for more ideas!

8. Pick your own Cherries at a local Orchard

Picking cherries is something that had been on our list for the last few years but somehow we never got around to it.

Picking cherries is a fun activity to do in Kelowna

I was so happy that we made it out cherry picking this year and I definitely recommend visiting an orchard and doing it yourself!

There are so many great cherry orchards you can go to pick cherries (and other fruits) at.

It’s the perfect activity to do while you’re in Kelowna.

Picking cherries - a fun activity to do in Kelowna

We went to the small family owned Fransera Farm in Lake Country (they don’t even have a website!) and it was such a great experience.

I swear the cherries taste even sweeter when you’ve picked them yourself.

Hows that for an afternoon activity you can really sink our teeth into?

Location details to FranSera Farms here

9. Pick seasonal fruit at Paynter’s Fruit Market

Address: 3687 Paynter Rd, West Kelowna

Open mid-late June until early fall, Paynter’s Fruit Market is a fantastic farm and orchard to visit in West Kelowna.

No matter what month you arrive, they will have something fun you can pick!

Planning a trip to Kelowna soon? This guide covers all the best things to do in Kelowna from a locals perspective! From wineries and cideries, to adventure activities, hikes, waters sports and more. This guide has everything you need to plan your visit to beautiful Kelowna! Pictured here: Pick fruit at Paynter's Fruit Market

It is such a fun experience to visit Paynter’s and pick fresh fruit.

We went and picked golden plums which I had never heard of, and they were so delicious!

I highly recommend visiting Paynter’s when you visit.

Here is a list of the fruits they have and when they will (approximately) be ripe for the picking:

  • Apricots: July
  • Peaches: End of July – early September
  • Golden Plums: August
  • Pears: Late August – Early October
  • Apples: End September – Late October
  • Italian Prune Plums: September

10. Taste some incredible wines at Black Swift Vineyards

Address: 2345 Boucherie Rd

Black Swift Vineyards opened in 2020 and is easily one of my all time favourite wineries in Kelowna.

(you can read my guide to the best wineries in Kelowna here)

Planning a trip to Kelowna soon? This guide covers all the best things to do in Kelowna from a locals perspective! From wineries and cideries, to adventure activities, hikes, waters sports and more. This guide has everything you need to plan your visit to beautiful Kelowna! Pictured here: Black Swift Vineyards

The wines at Black Swift are absolutely incredible!

Black Swift is the kind of winery for people who love good wines, but like any Jason Parkes’ winery they aren’t about being wine snobs.

But just because they aren’t your typical wine snobs, doesn’t mean their wines aren’t fantastic.

Beyond having incredible wines, the views here are stunning and they have the friendliest staff that makes your tasting experience truly enjoyable.

11. Spend your Sunday at Hangover Church

If you happen to be in Kelowna on a Sunday, you have to book yourself in for Hangover Church at Black Swift Vineyards!

Hangover Church is a one seating brunch event with a breakfast feature dish, mimosa, and full wine tasting experience.

This is one unique (and fun) way to spend your Sunday!

12. Hike to the top of Mount Boucherie and take in the stunning views.

Address: E Boundary Rd, Westbank

What was once a 2000m active volcano that dates back 60 million years is now an amazing hiking trail that takes you to 360 degree views of the Okanagan Valley below.

Due to erosion the peak is now just under 800m and has some pretty spectacular views!

This guide has everything you need to plan your visit to beautiful Kelowna! Pictured here: Hike to the top of Mount Boucherie

Mount Boucherie has 3 different trails you can go on that range from moderate to difficult level hikes.

At about 6km round trip, some areas are easy enough for the whole family while others require more experienced hikers.

Pick a trail based on your skill level and get ready to see why hiking is a big attraction in Kelowna!

Thanks to Tourism Kelowna, here are the directions for both the more difficult and easier hikes:

Regular trail: To access this trail, turn onto Bartley Road from Hwy 97. This road turns into East Boundary Rd. Follow the road approximately 1.5 km and you will see a small parking area on your left.  Click here for Google Maps location .

Easier trail: If you are a beginner hiker or if you have younger children with you, consider accessing the trails from Lakeview Cove Road at Eain Lamont Park. This option will reduce your elevation gain making it easier.  Click here for Google Maps location .

13. Visit one of Kelowna’s many public beaches

As if you were going to visit Kelowna without spending some time on the lake right?

Whether you decide to visit one of Kelowna’s beaches and spend the day laying in the sun, strolling along the downtown harbour, checking out the passing boats, or you prefer to get out on the water yourself, you absolutely must spend some time visiting Lake Okanagan.

Planning a trip to Kelowna soon? This guide covers all the best things to do in Kelowna from a locals perspective! From wineries and cideries, to adventure activities, hikes, waters sports and more. This guide has everything you need to plan your visit to beautiful Kelowna!

If you’re like me then your ideal vacation activity is spending the day laying on a beach with a good book, with not a care in the world, cooler in hand, and of course plenty of snacks packed away!

Kelowna has so many great beaches to visit and these are some of the most popular (click them for the location details):

  • Hot Sands Beach
  • Boyce-Gyro Beach
  • Rotary Beach

14. Rent a boat for the day

Check out Maeg’s BBQ Boats which are quite literally boats with BBQ’s in the middle!

15. Spend the day kayaking, paddle boarding or canoeing on the lake

For an extra fun activity to do in Kelowna on the lake (that’s also a great workout) I recommend you rent a kayak, paddle board, or canoe from Okanagan Beach Rentals !

They have 5 rental locations along Lake Okanagan at some of the most popular beaches and it’s a great way to get out and enjoy the lake.

Kayaking in Kelowna is a must do while visiting!

You can rent from Okanagan Beach Rentals at these locations:

  • Gyro Beach Park
  • Rotary Beach Park
  • Tugboat Bay Beach
  • Bear Creek Provincial Park
  • Sun Oka Beach Provincial Park

16. Go for a Stroll along the Waterfront Boardwalk

The waterfront boardwalk is an absolutely stunning little walk along Lake Okanagan in downtown Kelowna.

On this walk you’ll get to see all sorts of wildlife, boats coming and going from the marina, and people out and about having picnics on the grass.

Stop for an ice cream along the way or head into one of the local restaurants and bars nearby for a drink after your stroll.

Parking is easily available along the streets or in one of the nearby carparks.

This is the perfect place to go for an after dinner stroll especially since it’s in close proximity to so many restaurants.

17. Take in the views from up high on a Parasailing experience

Address: 230 Queensway, Kelowna

Why not see it from up high in the sky on a parasailing adventure on Lake Okanagan!

We went parasailing the summer before last and it was so much fun.

Make sure to wear a bathing suit because there’s a good chance you’ll get a little dip in the water on your way down.

Ogopogo Parasail is located right at the Downtown Kelowna Waterfront in Kerry Park.

18. Head for a hipster wine tasting at The Hatch

Address: 3225 Boucherie Rd

The Hatch opened in 2015 and has some of my all time favourite wines in the region.

7 years later I can still proudly say that hasn’t changed one bit!

The Hatch prides itself in being a laid back winery that’s a far cry from the traditional “wine snob” wineries you can find in most wine regions.

They have the most artistic and fun wine labels to boot!

19. Try organic wines at Summerhill Pyramid Winery

Address: 4870 Chute Lake Rd

We’ve been visiting  Summerhill Pyramid Winery for years and you may remember it from my post on Instagrammable places in Kelowna ( which you should check out here! ).

Summerhill never fails to remain on the top of my things to do in Kelowna list.

All the wines at Summerhill are organic & biodynamic, and their bistro boasts an amazing menu of delicious local & organic fare with plenty of vegan options.

Summerhill is definitely a must visit – and besides, who doesn’t want a picture with a giant bottle of bubbly?

20. Visit the local Farmer’s Market

Address: Crn Springfield &, Dilworth Dr

You’ll find some pretty amazing locally grown fruits & vegetables in Kelowna so you’d definitely be missing out if you don’t try some while you’re there.

If buying your fruits and veggies already picked is more your jam then you can grab some at one of the many orchards or head over to the Kelowna Farmer’s and Crafter’s Market .

21. Check out the Oyama Zipline & Aerial Adventure Park

Address: 5617 Oyama Lake Rd

There’s a reason why Oyama Zipline is voted one of the top Kelowna Must-Do adventure activities and attractions.

I did the Aerial Adventure Park this past summer with my sister-in-law and we had a blast!

If you think aerial adventure parks are just for kids have I got news for you.

Not only was it difficult but we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

The park is shaded and it can get a little chillier than In the sun!

Oyama Zipline & Aerial Adventure Park has 4 courses of varying difficulties.

Start on the easiest one while you get your bearings and work your way up to the black diamond.

I thought I was in for an easy afternoon activity but couldn’t believe how sore I was the next day!

25. Grab a beer flight at BNA Brewing Co. & Eatery

Address: 1250 Ellis St

BNA was voted #1 brewery in Kelowna so of course it had to be included on my list of top Kelowna attractions!

Stop by their on-site tasting room and grab a flight of your choice from their list of 9 locally made beers or head to the restaurant for a meal and a couple pints.

By the way – they also have ten pin bowling on site so it’s the perfect afternoon activity to do in Kelowna – especially if the weather isn’t cooperating!

Want to check out more of Kelowna’s amazing cideries, breweries and distilleries? Check out this post on Tourism Kelowna’s website for a whole list of them !

26. Visit Benvoulin Heritage Church

Address: 2279 Benvoulin Rd

Visiting churches is such a thing in Europe, but who would have thought churches would be attractions here in Canada?

Planning a trip to Kelowna soon? This guide covers all the best things to do in Kelowna from a locals perspective! From wineries and cideries, to adventure activities, hikes, waters sports and more. This guide has everything you need to plan your visit to beautiful Kelowna! Pictured here: Visit Benvoulin Heritage Church

We drove by Benvoulin Heritage Church numerous times and every time we passed it I always said we need to stop there and shoot one day.

This year we finally made the stop and I’m so glad we did! It may not be as big or mighty as the historic churches in Europe… but this cute little church has plenty of history of its own!

Here’s a little backstory on this charming little church:

  • Benvoulin was built in 1892 and formerly known as the Bethel Presbyterian Church. It was the first Protestant Church between Vernon and the US border.
  • The church was built on land donated by real estate promoter George Grant MacKay, and it was built by H.W. Raymer who became Kelowna’s first mayor in 1905.
  • The lumber came from the sawmill of notable pioneer Eli Lequime, and Lord & Lady Aberdeen who owned the neighbouring Guisachan ranch. They donated money and labour and the church was based off a church in their home of Aberdeen in Scotland!
  • It was dedicated on September 1st of 1892 by reverend Thomas Somerville of Glasgow.
  • After many changes to the building the church closed in 1964
  • In 1982 the newly formed Central Okanagan Heritage Society took on the restoration of the building. It held its official reopening September 4th of 1986.
  • Since then the church has become a well-used and much-loved community space in Kelowna. It’s now used for cultural events, weddings, concerts and so much more!

Location details for Benvoulin Heritage Church here

27. Visit the Okanagan Heritage Museum

Address: 470 Queensway

At the Okanagan Heritage Museum you’ll discover the natural and human history of Kelowna.

Admission is by donation (although $5 is recommended) so it’s a super affordable activity.

Step into the world of the syilx/Okanagan people, and gain insights into their close connection to the land.

Learn about the arrival of traders and settlers, and peer into the windows of an original “Chinatown” shop.

Meet some individuals from Kelowna’s past and present, and be inspired by the Central Okanagan Sports Hall of Fame!

Okanagan Heritage Museum has both permanent and temporary exhibits so check the website to see what attractions are going on during your visit!

30. Do a Day Trip to Visit the Wineries of Lake Country

If you’re planning on spending a couple of days in Kelowna I definitely recommend doing the 20 minute drive and heading out to Lake Country to visit the wineries out there.

This guide has everything you need to plan your visit to beautiful Kelowna! Pictured here: Do a day trip to visit the wineries of Lake Country

While the wineries in Kelowna are amazing, there’s something special about the smaller, quainter wineries you’ll find in the Lake Country region.

There’s no denying these have quickly become some of my favourites, and we visit them all every time I’m in the area.

Planning a trip to Kelowna soon? This guide covers all the best things to do in Kelowna from a locals perspective! From wineries and cideries, to adventure activities, hikes, waters sports and more. They’re all in very close proximity and it’s easy to get them all done in one day.

Head to this area and do a self drive winery tour hitting up all of my favourites that I’ve listed in my Wineries of Lake Country – The Perfect Kelowna Day Trip blog post !

31. Take a Day Trip to the Oliver & Osoyoos Wine Region

This year for the first time we decided to venture outside of Kelowna and head 2 hours south to the Oliver & Osoyoos region.

Planning a trip to Kelowna soon? This guide covers all the best things to do in Kelowna from a locals perspective! From wineries and cideries, to adventure activities, hikes, waters sports and more. This guide has everything you need to plan your visit to beautiful Kelowna! Pictured here: Do a day trip to visit the wineries of Oliver & Osoyoos

I was super excited to visit this region because the climate is much hotter (it’s a desert climate) meaning they specialize in growing big BOLD reds.

Although I never discriminate against a bottle of wine, I do love my bold reds and I was particularly excited to visit wineries in a region where the bold red grapes flourish.

The Oliver and Osoyoos region has around 24 wineries you can visit.

I listed 6 of my favourite Oliver and Osoyoos wineries that you have to check out here .

Head out to this region and spend the day visiting them all before making the drive back to Kelowna.

Just make sure you have a designated driver!

You’ll quickly see why visiting this region is a top attraction for Kelowna visitors.

Final Thoughts

The huge solar storm is keeping power grid and satellite operators on edge

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory captured this image of solar flares early Saturday afternoon. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says there have been measurable effects and impacts from the geomagnetic storm.

Planet Earth is getting rocked by the biggest solar storm in decades – and the potential effects have those people in charge of power grids, communications systems and satellites on edge.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says there have been measurable effects and impacts from the geomagnetic storm that has been visible as aurora across vast swathes of the Northern Hemisphere. So far though, NOAA has seen no reports of major damage.

There has been some degradation and loss to communication systems that rely on high-frequency radio waves, NOAA told NPR, as well as some preliminary indications of irregularities in power systems.

"Simply put, the power grid operators have been busy since yesterday working to keep proper, regulated current flowing without disruption," said Shawn Dahl, service coordinator for the Boulder, Co.-based Space Weather Prediction Center at NOAA.

"Satellite operators are also busy monitoring spacecraft health due to the S1-S2 storm taking place along with the severe-extreme geomagnetic storm that continues even now," Dahl added, saying some GPS systems have struggled to lock locations and offered incorrect positions.

NOAA's GOES-16 satellite captured a flare erupting occurred around 2 p.m. EDT on May 9, 2024.

As NOAA had warned late Friday, the Earth has been experiencing a G5, or "Extreme," geomagnetic storm . It's the first G5 storm to hit the planet since 2003, when a similar event temporarily knocked out power in part of Sweden and damaged electrical transformers in South Africa.

The NOAA center predicted that this current storm could induce auroras visible as far south as Northern California and Alabama.

Around the world on social media, posters put up photos of bright auroras visible in Russia , Scandinavia , the United Kingdom and continental Europe . Some reported seeing the aurora as far south as Mallorca, Spain .

The source of the solar storm is a cluster of sunspots on the sun's surface that is 17 times the diameter of the Earth. The spots are filled with tangled magnetic fields that can act as slingshots, throwing huge quantities of charged particles towards our planet. These events, known as coronal mass ejections, become more common during the peak of the Sun's 11-year solar cycle.

A powerful solar storm is bringing northern lights to unusual places

Usually, they miss the Earth, but this time, NOAA says several have headed directly toward our planet, and the agency predicted that several waves of flares will continue to slam into the Earth over the next few days.

While the storm has proven to be large, predicting the effects from such incidents can be difficult, Dahl said.

Shocking problems

The most disruptive solar storm ever recorded came in 1859. Known as the "Carrington Event," it generated shimmering auroras that were visible as far south as Mexico and Hawaii. It also fried telegraph systems throughout Europe and North America.

Stronger activity on the sun could bring more displays of the northern lights in 2024

While this geomagnetic storm will not be as strong, the world has grown more reliant on electronics and electrical systems. Depending on the orientation of the storm's magnetic field, it could induce unexpected electrical currents in long-distance power lines — those currents could cause safety systems to flip, triggering temporary power outages in some areas.

my cat just experienced the aurora borealis, one of the world's most radiant natural phenomena... and she doesn't care pic.twitter.com/Ee74FpWHFm — PJ (@kickthepj) May 10, 2024

The storm is also likely to disrupt the ionosphere, a section of Earth's atmosphere filled with charged particles. Some long-distance radio transmissions use the ionosphere to "bounce" signals around the globe, and those signals will likely be disrupted. The particles may also refract and otherwise scramble signals from the global positioning system, according to Rob Steenburgh, a space scientist with NOAA. Those effects can linger for a few days after the storm.

Like Dahl, Steenburgh said it's unclear just how bad the disruptions will be. While we are more dependent than ever on GPS, there are also more satellites in orbit. Moreover, the anomalies from the storm are constantly shifting through the ionosphere like ripples in a pool. "Outages, with any luck, should not be prolonged," Steenburgh said.

What Causes The Northern Lights? Scientists Finally Know For Sure

The radiation from the storm could have other undesirable effects. At high altitudes, it could damage satellites, while at low altitudes, it's likely to increase atmospheric drag, causing some satellites to sink toward the Earth.

The changes to orbits wreak havoc, warns Tuija Pulkkinen, chair of the department of climate and space sciences at the University of Michigan. Since the last solar maximum, companies such as SpaceX have launched thousands of satellites into low Earth orbit. Those satellites will now see their orbits unexpectedly changed.

"There's a lot of companies that haven't seen these kind of space weather effects before," she says.

The International Space Station lies within Earth's magnetosphere, so its astronauts should be mostly protected, Steenburgh says.

In a statement, NASA said that astronauts would not take additional measures to protect themselves. "NASA completed a thorough analysis of recent space weather activity and determined it posed no risk to the crew aboard the International Space Station and no additional precautionary measures are needed," the agency said late Friday.

While this storm will undoubtedly keep satellite operators and utilities busy over the next few days, individuals don't really need to do much to get ready.

"As far as what the general public should be doing, hopefully they're not having to do anything," Dahl said. "Weather permitting, they may be visible again tonight." He advised that the largest problem could be a brief blackout, so keeping some flashlights and a radio handy might prove helpful.

And don't forget to go outside and look up, adds Steenburgh. This event's aurora is visible much further south than usual.

A faint aurora can be detected by a modern cell phone camera, he adds, so even if you can't see it with your eyes, try taking a photo of the sky.

The aurora "is really the gift from space weather," he says.

Solar Storm Intensifies, Filling Skies With Northern Lights

Officials warned of potential blackouts or interference with navigation and communication systems this weekend, as well as auroras as far south as Southern California or Texas.

day trips from kelowna bc

By Katrina Miller and Judson Jones

Katrina Miller reports on space and astronomy and Judson Jones is a meteorologist.

A dramatic blast from the sun set off the highest-level geomagnetic storm in Earth’s atmosphere on Friday that is expected to make the northern lights visible as far south as Florida and Southern California and could interfere with power grids, communications and navigations system.

It is the strongest such storm to reach Earth since Halloween of 2003. That one was strong enough to create power outages in Sweden and damage transformers in South Africa.

The effects could continue through the weekend as a steady stream of emissions from the sun continues to bombard the planet’s magnetic field.

The solar activity is so powerful that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which monitors space weather, issued an unusual storm watch for the first time in 19 years, which was then upgraded to a warning. The agency began observing outbursts on the sun’s surface on Wednesday, with at least five heading in the direction of Earth.

“What we’re expecting over the next couple of days should be more significant than what we’ve seen certainly so far,” Mike Bettwy, the operations chief at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, said at a news conference on Friday morning.

For people in many places, the most visible part of the storm will be the northern lights, known also as auroras. But authorities and companies will also be on the lookout for the event’s effects on infrastructure, like global positioning systems, radio communications and even electrical power.

While the northern lights are most often seen in higher latitudes closer to the North Pole, people in many more parts of the world are already getting a show this weekend that could last through the early part of next week.

Windmills against skies glowing pink, purple and green.

As Friday turned to Saturday in Europe, people across the continent described skies hued in a mottling of colors.

Alfredo Carpineti , an astrophysicist, journalist and author in North London, saw them with his husband from the rooftop of their apartment building.

“It is incredible to be able to see the aurora directly from one’s own backyard,” he said. “I was hoping to maybe catch a glimpse of green on the horizon, but it was all across the sky in both green and purple.”

Here’s what you need to know about this weekend’s solar event.

How will the storm affect people on Earth?

A geomagnetic storm watch or warning indicates that space weather may affect critical infrastructure on or orbiting near Earth. It may introduce additional current into systems, which could damage pipelines, railroad tracks and power lines.

According to Joe Llama, an astronomer at Lowell Observatory, communications that rely on high frequency radio waves, such as ham radio and commercial aviation , are most likely to suffer. That means it is unlikely that your cellphone or car radio, which depend on much higher frequency radio waves, will conk out.

Still, it is possible for blackouts to occur. As with any power outage, you can prepare by keeping your devices charged and having access to backup batteries, generators and radio.

The most notable solar storm recorded in history occurred in 1859. Known as the Carrington Event, it lasted for nearly a week, creating aurora that stretched down to Hawaii and Central America and impacting hundreds of thousands of miles of telegraph lines.

But that was technology of the 19th century, used before scientists fully understood how solar activity disrupted Earth’s atmosphere and communication systems.

“That was an extreme level event,” said Shawn Dahl, a forecaster at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center. “We are not anticipating that.”

Unlike tornado watches and warnings, the target audience for NOAA’s announcements is not the public.

“For most people here on planet Earth, they won’t have to do anything,” said Rob Steenburgh, a space scientist at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center.

The goal of the announcements is to give agencies and companies that operate this infrastructure time to put protection measures in place to mitigate any effects.

“If everything is working like it should, the grid will be stable and they’ll be able to go about their daily lives,” Mr. Steenburgh said.

day trips from kelowna bc

Will I be able to see the northern lights?

It is possible that the northern lights may grace the skies this week over places that don’t usually see them. The best visibility is outside the bright lights of cities.

Clouds or stormy weather could pose a problem in some places. But if the skies are clear, even well south of where the aurora is forecast to take place, snap a picture or record a video with your cellphone. The sensor on the camera is more sensitive to the wavelengths produced by the aurora and may produce an image you can’t see with the naked eye.

Another opportunity could be viewing sunspots during the daytime, if your skies are clear. As always, do not look directly at the sun without protection. But if you still have your eclipse glasses lying around from the April 8 event, you may try to use them to try to spot the cluster of sunspots causing the activity.

How strong is the current geomagnetic storm?

Giant explosions on the surface of the sun, known as coronal mass ejections, send streams of energetic particles into space. But the sun is large, and such outbursts may not cross our planet as it travels around the star. But when these particles create a disturbance in Earth’s magnetic field, it is known as a geomagnetic storm.

NOAA classifies these storms on a “G” scale of 1 to 5, with G1 being minor and G5 being extreme. The most extreme storms can cause widespread blackouts and damage to infrastructure on Earth. Satellites may also have trouble orienting themselves or sending or receiving information during these events.

The current storm is classified as G5, or “extreme.” It is caused by a cluster of sunspots — dark, cool regions on the solar surface — that is about 16 times the diameter of Earth. The cluster is flaring and ejecting material every six to 12 hours.

“We anticipate that we’re going to get one shock after another through the weekend,” said Brent Gordon, chief of the space weather services branch at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center.

Why is this happening now?

The sun’s activity ebbs and flows on an 11-year cycle, and right now, it is approaching a solar maximum. Three other severe geomagnetic storms have been observed so far in the current activity cycle, which began in December 2019, but none were predicted to cause effects strong enough on Earth to warrant a watch or warning announcement.

The cluster of sunspots generating the current storm is the largest seen in this solar cycle, NOAA officials said. They added that the activity in this cycle has outperformed initial predictions .

More flares and expulsions from this cluster are expected, but because of the sun’s rotation the cluster will be oriented in a position less likely to affect Earth. In the coming weeks, the sunspots may appear again on the left side of the sun, but it is difficult for scientists to predict whether this will cause another bout of activity.

“Usually, these don’t come around packing as much of a punch as they did originally,” Mr. Dahl said. “But time will tell on that.”
