Exploring the US Air Force Museum in Dayton Ohio with Kids

Located just 40 miles from Columbus, Newark is a great spot to go if you’re looking to get out of the city for the day. Fans of quirky landmarks can get an up-close-and-personal look at the world’s largest basket, which actually houses a company headquarters.

The Interesting Works Museum, which is dedicated to Newark’s industrial history, is worth visiting too. Here, you can learn about canal-building and glass blowing, as well as the history of the region. Keep an eye out for ancient earthworks, which were constructed by Native American civilizations in the area.

Also, consider going in early June. Not only will you be able to check out the sites, but you’ll be able to soak in the atmosphere of the Newark Strawberry Festival and nosh on strawberry shortcakes and other delicious dishes.

Experience the Ohio Caverns in West Liberty Ohio

1-hour drive from Columbus

If you’re looking to explore during your next day trip, head northwest to the Ohio Caverns in West Liberty. These Ohio caves are recognized as some of the most colorful in the United States because of their amazing collection of stalagmites, stalactites, and other formations.

If you’re going to go exploring, take a jacket and a camera. The caverns maintain a constant temperature of 54 degrees, and a jacket will keep you comfortable. With your camera, you can get amazing photos of the formations up close and be able to show them to family and friends.

Guided tours lasting about an hour are offered, so be prepared for some walking.

A Trip to Yellow Springs Ohio

There are many fun options for day trips from Columbus Ohio to Yellow Springs. In particular, Young’s Jersey Dairy Farm has excellent ice cream and a restaurant.

day trips to columbus ohio

You can also visit the  Glen Helen Nature Preserve , which has a nice visitors center, and you can learn about the area as you walk through the pathways. There’s a grotto and some interesting wildlife.

In and around Yellow Springs, is Clifton Ohio with a covered bridge and Historic Clifton Mill . There are less than 100 mills still in existence today, and this is one of them.

What to See in Mansfield Ohio

If you’ve seen “Shawshank Redemption” (if you haven’t, come on it’s a classic), you’ll really enjoy Mansfield. Even if you haven’t seen the movie, this city is very interesting.

The Ohio State Reformatory is fascinating and intriguing. You’re allowed to wander around and freak yourself out with all the nooks, crannies, and peeling wallpaper in every room. The audio guides enrich your time and point out things that you would probably never notice.

For example, there’s an ‘x’ of light that’s made between four doorways that’s always there because of the symmetry of the building. Interesting, but most people don’t notice.

day trips to columbus ohio

Beware that there’s no heat in the building. We went in February and nearly froze to death. However, we still loved it and can’t wait to visit again.

A Visit in Lucas Ohio

About 20 minutes from Mansfield, is another wonderful site worth visiting — Malabar Farm State Park . It features lots of events, like Wildflower hikes and Maple Syrup Festivals . The home was built by a man named Louis Bromfield in the 1940s and has all the original furnishings.

It features paintings from France, a grand piano, etc.

The home is interesting to explore, and the history is fascinating. Many celebrities visited the home, and in fact, Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall got married here. The home was donated to be part of a state park and is very well-done.

The state park, which is also near Mohican State Park , features hiking trails and look-outs. The tallest point in the area, Mt. Jeez, is a great overlook to see the entire farm.

day trips to columbus ohio

We visited Malabar Farm State Park in the summer and enjoyed some of the hiking trails we’d heard about in February.  We also visited the farm and saw some of the animals, and then ate at the Malabar Farm Restaurant , which uses local ingredients in their dishes.

Cedar Bog Nature Preserve in Urbana Ohio

Less than one hour from Columbus, you’ll find a 450-acre nature preserve. Thousands of years ago, glaciers carved through much of Ohio and left behind what are now protected wetlands.

Visitors will be pleased to learn that boardwalks go through the wetlands, so you won’t have to put on heavy-duty gear to go exploring. You can explore the preserve year-round, but visiting in springtime is something special when the lady slipper orchids bloom.

There’s a small fee for each entrant to help with the upkeep of the park. But it’s worth it considering all the rare plants and animals you’ll get to see.

Hocking Hills State Park in Logan Ohio

Almost every local knows about Hocking Hills State Park as a destination for day trips from Columbus Ohio . There aren’t many places to hike and see hills around Columbus (obviously), so this area is close enough it’s a hot place to visit.

However, it’s worth mentioning regardless. There are many trails and sites worth mentioning, including Old Man’s Cave .

John Glenn Astronomy Park in Logan Ohio

There are lots of great day trips from Columbus Ohio, but a visit to John Glenn Astronomy Park makes for a great night trip. If you go on a clear night, you’ll have a great experience and be able to see the night sky during one of the many weekly programs that are held.

Visitors can plan their own evenings of fun too. It’s open at all times, and admission is free. So, if you’re into stars and astrology, grab your telescope, and make the drive.

When you think of Ohio, you likely think of Columbus, Cincinnati, and Cleveland. But if you’re looking for a fun day trip, don’t discount the numerous Dayton Ohio things to do .

If you love planes and aviation, Dayton is a place you absolutely have to visit. Famed pioneers of flight Orville and Wilbur Wright are from Dayton, and the city is where they built their first aircraft.

Also, Dayton is home to the National Museum of the US Air Force , one of the world’s largest aviation museums. You can marvel at more than 350 aerospace vehicles, missiles, and exhibits that tell of the country’s aviation history. You can test out a flight simulator and check out a 3D theater too.

If you can’t go to Africa, go to The Wilds on day trips from Columbus Ohio! It has open-air safari rides that are $30 a person, and you get to see animals in a “more natural habitat.” (Obviously, they were stolen from their original habitat, but those of us who have a complex with visiting zoos will enjoy this option more.)

The safari takes you around so you can view animals grazing or watering. Animals we saw — zebras, camels, deer, giraffes, and other animals I can’t pronounce.

A Visit to the Miamisburg Mound in Ohio

If you’re looking for a quick getaway with the family for the day, head to Miamisburg Mound, where you’ll find spectacular man-made mounds. These are conical and easy to climb, so if you’re willing to climb up, it makes for a great family photo op.

Historic Loveland Castle & Museum in Loveland Ohio

You may think the best and most magnificent castles can only be found overseas in Europe. That’s where you’re wrong.

Just over an hour from Columbus, you’ll find Loveland Castle, which came to be when a WWI veteran was inspired to build a French-style castle of his own. Not only can you go exploring, but the castle offers many other services, such as weddings and Cub Scout sleepovers.

As you explore and marvel at the architecture — a mix of German, French, and English construction — you can learn all about Harry (the man who built the castle), play games and puzzles, and keep an eye out for ghosts that reportedly roam around.

If you like medieval swords and weapons, those are displayed throughout the castle as well.

Salt Fork State Park in Lore City Ohio

If you’re a fan of cryptids and cryptology, day trips from Columbus Ohio to explore Ohio’s famous Bigfoot territory are right up your alley. The park has been featured on Animal Planet and is reportedly full of the famous bipeds.

As you’ve already read, Ohio is home to some truly great historical sights. At this Hamilton museum, you can take a scenic drive in your car to see this more than 300-acre sculpture park. If you want something a little more adventurous, rent a golf cart for a closer look.

While you’re here, stop at the Ancient Sculpture Museum, where you can see sculptures from many civilizations, including the Romans, Greeks, and Egyptians.

Explore Greater Cincinnati Ohio

There’s a lot to do in Cincinnati.

The second time we went to Cincinnati, we visited a few other places worth mentioning — such as the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center , which discussed the harrowing effects of slavery in the United States and current slavery that still exists in the world.

It’s one of those places that you want to be mentally prepared for. It’s thought-provoking and extremely intense to walk through. It features large printed slave ship sketches, a slave pen, etc.

Right outside of the Freedom Center is a waterfront area with a park and suspension bridge to walk on. The suspension bridge goes over the Ohio River and connects Covington Kentucky with Cincinnati.

IMG_0389

We also visited the Cincinnati Art Museum , which is free and has a fantastic clothing exhibit and other amazing artwork! It was a beautiful museum to visit. Other places we visited there were Spring Grove Cemetery, which had some beautiful graves and other structures within the arboretum.

IMG_0386

Even though there was a wedding going on and we couldn’t explore the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption completely, we were able to see the nave inside and the beautiful building on the outside. I would like to go back when it’s not full of wedding guests to explore the rest of it.

IMG_0387

After sightseeing, we ate dinner at a restaurant called Taft’s Ale House , which boasts a very decadent menu. It was in an old building and had great food, beer, and cocktails.

Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Brecksville Ohio

2-hour drive from Columbus

Believe it or not, Cuyahoga Valley National Park is the only national park in the state of Ohio. You’ll find it north of Columbus and close to Cleveland. If you love nature, you’ll be blown away by the natural beauty found along the Cuyahoga River, including caves, Brandywine Falls , and the Blue Hen waterfall.

If you’re up for hiking trails, there’s a historic canal that you can traverse on foot. That canal connects Ohio to the rest of the country by stretching to Lake Erie in the north.

Not only can you see iconic pieces of rock history, but there are plenty of chances for fans to interact. The Garage also allows fans to play instruments along with instructional videos.

A theater lets you see iconic moments in rock-and-roll history, and listening stations let you hear songs that shaped that history.

What to See in Chagrin Falls Ohio

Chagrin Falls is an adorable little suburb of Cleveland. The main area has an old-timey popcorn shop , Jeni’s Ice Cream, and the actual waterfall to view. The town is fun to walk around and explore.

IMAG1008 (1)

When we went, we had a Groupon for an adorable bed and breakfast called The Club at Hillbrook . The rooms are beautiful, spacious, and elegant. We ate dinner in the main restaurant, which had cute string lights and overlooked the large property.

You can also walk around the property and enjoy some of the interesting trails and nature nearby.

DSCN0794

Enjoy Greater Cleveland Ohio

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Chagrin Falls shouldn’t be the only things you see while you’re in C-town. If the weather is cooperative, you can tour some of the city’s most historic neighborhoods.

If you’re itching to shop, the historic West Side Market offers some of the freshest food you’re likely to find anywhere. Also, check out the Cleveland Arcade, which is home to equally impressive stores and restaurants.

If you’re a fan of “A Christmas Story,” the house used in the movie can be found in the Tremont neighborhood and has been renovated to look exactly as it did in the movie. There are even more  Cleveland day trip  ideas to explore too.

Coopers Rock State Forest in Bruceton Mills West Virginia

3-hour and 30-minute drive from Columbus

I just visited Coopers Rock State Forest on our way back from Maryland.  The views are beautiful, and I didn’t get a chance to explore the entire place.

The main lookout point was very crowded with people, although I think it was the time of year and time of day we went. There was perfect October weather in the afternoon! I suspect if you aim to go here in the morning, it will be less crowded, and when you get to some of the main trails it won’t be so bad.

There’s a main overlook area, with pay-to-view finders, and then there are hiking trails you can take that will bring you off the main overlook to an underlook. There’s also a gift shop and a park. If it’s nice out, I think you can really make a full day of it.

Best Day Trips From Columbus OH Within 1 Hour

Hocking hills.

Distance from Columbus to Hocking Hills: 55 miles/55 minutes

day trips to columbus ohio

Hocking Hills State Park is surely one of the most popular day trips in Ohio. In fact, I first heard about it from my random seatmate on our relocation flight!

This is a great place for hiking in Ohio. The most popular trails are Old Man’s Cave (about 1.5 miles and rated moderate) and Ash Cave (about 0.5 miles whether you make a loop around the rim or go through the middle of the gorge and back out, though the gorge trail is paved for accessibility), which are great for preschoolers through adults. If you visit during the rainy season, you’ll be wowed by the waterfalls on these trails. We went in mid-October and unfortunately it’s was almost totally dry and didn’t yet have fall foliage.

For a more rugged hiking experience, try nearby Conkles Hollow State Nature Preserve. The rim trail there sits atop massive sandstone cliffs and offers at 2.5 mile loop trail. There are places where this trail is narrow, rocky and slippery – use caution! Many parents opt not to do this with their kids until they’re older.

Distance from Columbus to Dayton: 75 miles/1 hour

day trips to columbus ohio

If Hocking Hills is the first day trip from Columbus you take, a day trip to Dayton should be your second. There are too many things to do in Dayton to detail in this roundup! I’ve actually been visiting since my own childhood, but we make several trips each year now and keep finding new, unique activities.

Of course Dayton is best known as the home of the National Museum of the US Air Force . It’s truly impressive! There are great displays covering the history of aviation and space travel as well as Ohio’s role in both. You can’t beat the cool factor of the Museum’s collection of retired Air Force One planes that you can walk through . See how leaders from Roosevelt to Clinton rode in style! In recent years they’ve added a lot more hands-on exhibits and simulators for kids, so visitors of all ages will be engaged. Did I mention that admission is FREE ?

day trips to columbus ohio

If you’re visiting when the weather is nice, Dayton also has plenty of lovely gardens to visit. We especially love Aullwood Gardens Metro Park and look forward to visiting Wegerzyn Gardens and Cox Arboretum – all three of those are totally FREE as well since they’re part of the fantastic Five Rivers MetroParks system.

day trips to columbus ohio

One of our favorite hidden gems in Dayton is Sunwatch Indian Village . This is an active archeological site, and there’s also great recreation of the Fort Ancient village that stood on the site 800 years ago. You’ll enter through the small but excellent museum that houses both artifacts as well as representations of the Fort Ancient culture. We visited on a gorgeous Saturday and were the only people there, so this is a great place to avoid crowds – but please tell your friends to visit too so that we can support this excellent site.

Springfield

Distance from Columbus to Springfield: 50 miles/50 minutes

day trips to columbus ohio

Springfield, Ohio is a new one for us but I’m so glad we visited! This is a must-do Ohio day trip for architecture fans thanks to the presence of Frank Lloyd Wright’s incredible Westcott House . It’s the only Prairie house he built in Ohio and sadly it fell into disrepair in the second half of the 20th century. Thankfully in recent years it was lovingly restored by the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy and it opened to the public for tours in 2005 – that’s part of the reason many Ohioans don’t know about it! Weekend tours can and do sell out, so get your tickets a day or two in advance if you’re particular about timing.

day trips to columbus ohio

While you’re there, swing by the cute Hartman Rock Garden . It’s free and located in someone’s backyard, but don’t let either of those stop you. Ben Hartman’s hand-made creations are absolutely incredible and are still going strong a century later.

day trips to columbus ohio

While you’re in Springfield, be sure to grab lunch at Guerra’s Krazy Tacos. The Texas-born founder is from a Mexican family and makes high-quality, budget-friendly staples along with creative takes, all served up surrounded by fun decor.

Yellow Springs

Distance from Columbus to Yellow Springs: 55 miles/50 minutes

day trips to columbus ohio

Looking for a great spring or fall day trip from Columbus? Get to adorable Yellow Springs in under an hour!

The biggest draw is Glen Helen Nature Preserve , which offers a lovely Inman Trail loop hike through the woods that takes you to the yellow spring that gave the town its name. Just up the street in town, grab a slice of pizza from Benito’s – some people claim it serves up the best pizza in Ohio.

If you’re on a day trip with kids, be sure to stop at Young’s Jersey Dairy on your way back to Columbus. This dairy farm has been in the family for over 150 years, but it’s evolved a lot in that time! Today they serve up delicious homemade ice cream and more in their shop. If you want a longer visit, spend time visiting the farm animals, testing your skills at batting cages and mini golf or going down the “fast slide”.

Licking County

Distance from Columbus to Newark: 50 miles/1 hour

Neighboring Licking County is one of the most overlooked places to visit near Columbus, Ohio. There are plenty of options for visitors of all types, all year long! I’ve grouped its towns together here because they’re all close enough that you can mix-and-match for a full day of fun.

We actually opted to do a little winter staycation at the excellent Cherry Valley Hotel and I can’t recommend it enough! Hotel itself is lovely and it’s in a nice central location. This was the prefect place to try out igloo dining when we were looking for fun things to do in Columbus in winter .

day trips to columbus ohio

The town of Newark is lovely for a walk on a nice day – don’t miss the gorgeous Licking County courthouse at its center. You’ll want to snag a table at Elliot’s Woodfired Pizza , but be prepared for a little wait if there’s a game. Hop across the street on nice days for dessert at Drip Dreams Ice Cream .

day trips to columbus ohio

For families, flash your COSI card for free admission to The Works . This museum is small but excellent, with high-quality hands-on experiences everywhere you look. The lower level is focused on science and technology, plus a glass studio that has both gaffer demonstrations and optional workshops on Saturdays for older visitors. The upper level is focused on Ohio’s history and development and includes a mock village to explore. We stayed for three hours and had to drag the kids out!

The adorable New England-esque Village of Granville was established in 1805 and its main street, Broadway, shows that age in all the right ways. It’s perfect for a stroll and lunch, or you can even catch a show at the Eisner Center for the Performing Arts at Denison University. Nearby Lynd Fruit Farm (on the way from Columbus) always has something going on to extend your time in the area.

Buckeye Lake

day trips to columbus ohio

Want a taste of “lake life” close to home? Pop over to Buckeye Lake and spend an afternoon walking on the lovely path next to the shore. You can also rent a kayak or boat, or take a pontoon tour if you don’t feel comfortable navigating on your own. It’s a great summer day trip from Columbus OH!

The Dawes Arboretum

day trips to columbus ohio

The Dawes Arboretum is just outside of Newark and spans nearly 2000 acres. It’s massive! This hilly property has plenty of variety to warrant repeat visits, including a peaceful Japanese garden, ample hiking trails, periodic sculpture installations, an observation tower and more. You can even tour the property’s historic home during the warmer months.

Ticket prices are very reasonable at $10 per adult and $5 per child, but Dawes also accepts reciprocal membership from other AHS gardens like Franklin Park Conservatory.

day trips to columbus ohio

This is definitely one of the most fun day trips in Ohio for families, especially in late summer and early fall. Kick off your day with fruit picking at Branstool Orchard or Legend Hills Orchard . Both typically open in July for peaches and then continue for apples through mid-October. Branstool also has one of the nicest pumpkin patches near Columbus Ohio in fall! Legend Hills has a market on-site and is open year-round.

day trips to columbus ohio

Once you’ve picked your fill, drive 5 minutes around the corner to Velvet Ice Cream at Ye Old Mill. This old-school scoop shop also has a fun little museum built into the seating area, but after exploring families will want to head out to the large grassy meadow in front. There are tables to sit at or you can bring picnic blanket – I keep this one in my trunk at all times. It’s a lovely place to spend an afternoon tossing a frisbee, playing on the playground or watching the swans in the pond.

Schnormeier Gardens

Distance from Columbus to Schnormeier Gardens: 50 miles/1 hour

day trips to columbus ohio

Garden lovers absolutely must visit Gambier’s Schnormeier Gardens at least once in their lives. This spacious private garden is open annually on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in June. Visitors will fall in love with the in unique and diverse landscapes, from the Chinese Cup Garden to the shady Woodland Garden.

While the Gardens used to be free and drop-in, there’s now a $50 per vehicle charge. Feel free to load up the van! Do make sure to book your tickets in advance as it sells out nearly every year – particularly toward the end of June.

Columbus Ohio Day Trips Within 1.5 Hours

Distance from Columbus to Mansfield: 65 miles/1 hour 15 minutes

I can’t believe it took us nearly four years living in Columbus to get up to Richland County! There are so many things to do in Mansfield OH that we’ve recently gone up a few times – and we still have more to see. You can easily enjoy two of these sites in a single day if you get an early start, as they’re all fairly close together.

The Ohio State Reformatory aka “Shawshank Tour”

day trips to columbus ohio

When we were recently looking for a couples day trip from Columbus, a trip up to The Ohio State Reformatory was at the top of our list. This defunct prison was the primary filming location for 1994’s “The Shawshank Redemption”, based on Stephen King’s novella “Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption” – I read it as part of his Different Seasons collection and recommend that you do as well.

Though both the story and movie are set in Maine (like most of King’s work), Mansfield and the surrounding area of Richland County are reasonable stand-ins. During our tour of The Ohio State Reformatory, our guide did an excellent job sharing the history of the Reformatory and and its eventual decline while also weaving in elements of the movie.

day trips to columbus ohio

While there’s an option to visit the Reformatory on a self-guided tour, I strongly recommend reserving in advance for a guided tour of “the Shawshank prison”. We learned so much and our guide was very engaging!

Pro tip: Because of the understandable lack of climate control in the cell block, dress for temperature extremes if you visit in Winter or Summer.

Kingwood Center Gardens

day trips to columbus ohio

Kingwood Center Gardens is a lovely place to visit if you enjoy the more refined things in life. This 47 acre estate has beautifully manicured ground that are perfect for a Spring visit. You can also tour the stunning mansion on the property, Kingwood Hall, which still has many of the original furnishings from a century ago. Keep your eyes peeled for the peacocks who live on-site!

Note for Franklin Park Conservatory and other local AHS members: Your membership is not value for reciprocal admission to Kingwood Center Gardens. I believe this restriction also applies to members of The Dawes Arboreturm and Hywet Hall.

Ohio Bird Sanctuary

day trips to columbus ohio

If you’re looking for a great family day trip from Columbus, OH be sure to put the Ohio Bird Sanctuary on your list. This rescue and rehabilitation facility does great work both with animals and with their educational programs

In my experience it’s a great place for budding naturalists thanks to the diverse species in residence. It started as a raptor rescue so you’ll see plenty of hawks, falcons and even bald eagles! There are also several species of owls as well as a free fly aviary with more docile birds that have been turned over. Our kids loved hand-feeding the blue jays.

The OBS is open year-round Sunday through Tuesday so it’s a nice Columbus day trip option all year long, though you’ll find bigger crowds as the weather gets warm. But please learn from my mistake: stay off the Wood Duck Trail if it’s been rainy!

Downtown Mansfield

day trips to columbus ohio

While Mansfield is a small town, it’s worth a stop whether you’re an adult or a kid.

For adults, there are several noteworthy on the “Shawshank trail” located in downtown. You’ll find them clearly advertised with signs, but some popular ones include the Bissman Building (the Brewer Hotel in the movie) and Mansfield Antiques Gallery (which played the role of the pawn shop). They’re fun photo ops for movie lovers!

Though it was closed due to damage, Richland Carrousel Park is back open to entertain young visitors. The carousel looks old but it was actually built in 1991 as the first new hand-carved carousel in the US in almost a century.

For a fun throwback, stop in Operation Fandom & Blackbird Records. It’s full of Gen X through Millennial favorites like Star Wars collectibles, rare Pokémon packs, Garbage Pail Kids… and of course vinyl.

Downtown Mansfield even offers two delicious bakeries: Blackbird Bakery and Buckeye Bakery . I’ll let you sample both and decide which one you like best!

Malabar Farm State Park

We haven’t made it yet but one of the most popular things to do near Mansfield Ohio is visit Malabar Farm State Park . The site offers plenty to explore for lovers of both nature and history.

In summer and fall you can tour the farm by wagon, golf cart or hay ride. There are also guided tours of the Big House for adults in April through December. If you’re more interested in exploring nature, there are plenty of hiking trails or you can drive up to the top of Mt. Jeez for great views of Pleasant Valley.

Distance from Columbus to Athens: 75 miles/1 hour 15 minutes

day trips to columbus ohio

For another wonderful spring day trip from Columbus head down to Athens, home of Ohio University. Just outside of the Convocation Center you can enjoy one of the best places to see cherry blossoms in Ohio! There are more than 200 flowering cherry trees here. It’s not Japan or Washington DC , but it’s still absolutely lovely for a picnic.

You’ll want to follow the updates to make sure you choose a great day to visit, but usually generally late March to mid-April is ideal. While you’re there, be sure to take a walk around the charming historic part of campus as well as the adjacent town.

Distance from Columbus to The Wilds: 75 miles/1 hour 15 minutes

day trips to columbus ohio

Want to travel overseas and see exotic animals? Me too, but sometimes that isn’t in the cards.

Thankfully right here in Ohio you can see several dozen endangered and threatened species at The Wilds, one of the world’s largest conservation parks at almost 10,000 acres. Witness everything from these southern white rhinos to cheetahs to batengs and more.

day trips to columbus ohio

This is a wonderful Ohio day trip for the whole family, as the general tour is conducted in an open-air school bus. It feels like an adventure but requires minimal walking so it’s fine for babies through seniors.

We loved our visit to The Wilds so much that we became members – the Family Plus membership covered all six of who visited and parking for less than the cost of a single visit. We look forward to visiting again for one of the specialty tours, like the horseback sunset safari.

The season for The Wilds open-air safari is somewhat limited, running from early May into October. The beginning and end are ideal to avoid the hottest times, but I don’t recommend visiting on a day when rain is in the forecast. We all had fun but wound up soaked and muddy even though we were covered on the bus.

Day Trips from Columbus Ohio Within ~2 Hours

How far you can go on a day trip is like asking the length of a piece of string. There’s no single answer.

But I can tell you that I’ve seen some downright silly far suggestions for day trips from Columbus, Ohio. Barring a special event, there’s not much that makes it sensible to take a road trip that requires driving 3+ hours each way in a single day.

However, there are a few options that are about two hours from Columbus and special enough to warrant visiting even if you can’t stay overnight. Prepare for a long day, but know that it’ll be worthwhile and you’ll have a great time on these fun day trips in Ohio!

Cincinnati Zoo

Distance from Columbus to Cincinnati Zoo: 110 miles/1 hour 45 minutes

day trips to columbus ohio

While I’d normally advocate spending a weekend in Cincinnati , if you can’t make that happen it’s still pretty easy to pop down for the day to see the excellent Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden . The Cincy Zoo isn’t as big as the Columbus Zoo, but it offers a different vibe and is home to some animal celebrities like Fiona the baby hippo. The Cincinnati Zoo also has lots of keeper chats and animal encounters included with the price of admission – be sure to check the daily schedule – don’t miss Wings of Wonder on a summer visit.

After the zoo, you can stop at Findlay Market for an early dinner. This is one of the best one tank trips from Columbus for families!

Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Distance from Columbus to Cuyahoga Valley National Park: 130 miles/2 hours

day trips to columbus ohio

We’re lucky to have one of America’s 63 National Parks right here in Ohio! It’s preserved to showcase both the area’s natural beauty and the unique historical significance of the Ohio & Erie Canal. While there’s plenty to fill an entire weekend with things to do at Cuyahoga Valley National Park, you can get a taste on a day trip as well. Even better, admission to the Park is free!

The crown jewel of the Park is Brandywine Falls. You can take the gorge trail if you want some good exercise, but the best view of the falls is down the stairs (many of them) from the parking lot in the lower viewing area; the upper viewing area isn’t quite as dramatic but thankfully it offers an accessible option. Keep in mind that the parking lot at Brandywine Falls can get very crowded on beautiful days in the summer, but the falls are most impressive right after a big rain. We had no trouble parking here on an overcast day in April!

day trips to columbus ohio

Be sure to spend some time hiking around The Ledges, which is a moderate 2 mile loop. The area’s geology is on full display and kids will love running up and down some of the massive boulders. I do recommend waterproof hiking shoes or boots with good tread for the trails in CVNP, as it’s a moist area so there are plenty of spots that are slick with either mud or moss – my kids both wore these boots , while I prefer these low-tops .

If you visit Cuyahoga Valley National Park in the summer, build time into your schedule to watch demonstrations of the canal’s lock system by historical reenactors, enjoy a free concert and take a ride on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railway.

day trips to columbus ohio

For snacks to refuel during the day, you can snag some Cleveland-made Mitchell’s ice cream cups at Boston Store (adjacent to the visitors center) or stop at The Crooked Kettle Popcorn Company in Peninsula.

day trips to columbus ohio

If you’ve ended your day at the Canal Exploration Center, it’s easy to pop up to adorable Chagrin Falls for strolling and dinner. We had a great meal at Ponyboys just outside of town, or for fancy dinner with a view you can wipe the mud off and visit 17 River Grille overlooking the lovely Chagrin Falls waterfall.

Distance from Columbus to Vermillion: 120 miles/2 hour 15 minutes

day trips to columbus ohio

Can’t make it all the way to the ocean or the Gulf of Mexico? One of the best summer day trips in Ohio is to the Lake Erie beach in Vermillion. Main Street Beach offers just the right amount of sand and water to get your fix. At just over 2 hours, it’s the closest beach to Columbus Ohio.

The drive is at the edge of day tripping for most people, but totally manageable for a day at the beach. You can leave Columbus after breakfast and you’ll arrive in Vermillion in time to stroll around the charming town, admire the sailboats on the river and grab a bite to eat before you go relax.

15 Best Day Trips from Columbus (Ohio)

Columbus is the capital of the mid-western state of Ohio, and also its largest city.

Known for its numerous parks and world famous university, Columbus is also centrally located between Ohio’s two other big cities: Cleveland and Cincinnati.

It is in the perfect location to be used as a base to gain access to the entire state.

Within reach of Ohio are many opportunities for day tripping, with many historic mid-west cities and towns, such as Newark and Dayton, just a short drive away.

Nature lovers will find plenty of State Parks with hiking trails, cascading waterfalls and beautiful woodland scenery to explore.

Far north of Ohio lies the huge Lake Erie, along with the state’s only National Park: Cuyahoga National Park.

Around the state there are underground caverns, caves and even ancient Native American earthworks: lasting relics from a time long ago that have survived to this day and are an important part of the region’s long history.

1. Hocking Hills

Hocking Hills State Park

Just southeast of Columbus is the Hocking Hills State Park, a must do day trip from the city that takes you to some of the most unusual rock formations in Ohio.

Hocking Hills is the site of caves, cliffs and crevasses, with short and long hikes connecting different parts of the park, as well as opportunities for kayaking, rock climbing and even zip lining.

The real highlight of the Hocking Hills is the cavernous Ash Cave, which forms a huge open recess in the rock that can be walked in and around.

Aside from the Ash Cave, there are many other rock formations to visit; don’t miss out on Cedar Falls, a spectacular waterfall which plunges over giant rocks.

2. Cuyahoga National Park

Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Cuyahoga National Park is Ohio’s only National Park.

Found north of Columbus and close to the city of Cleveland, it is a stunning area of natural beauty that follows the course of the Cuyahoga River, containing walking and cycling trails, waterfalls, and caves to discover.

The National Park also has an historical canal that can be traversed on foot.

This was the first canal in the state, stretching to Lake Erie in the north.

It allowed Ohio to be opened up to the rest of the country and the world by providing a means of entry and exit for people and goods.

Dayton, Ohio

The small, unassuming city of Dayton has played a huge role in the history of aviation.

This is where the Wright Brothers came from, and where they built their first aircraft; going down in history as the pioneers of modern flight.

Dayton, just a day trip away from Columbus, should be visited to see where flight really began.

Today it is also home to the National Museum of the United States Air Force, a very fitting location for one of the largest aviation museums in the world.

World's Largest Picnic Basket, Newark, Ohio

Newark is just 40 miles away, and is a great retreat from the big city.

Here you can find the world’s largest basket, which is actually a huge, company headquarters building shaped and designed to look like a basket.

There is also the interesting Works Museum: a museum dedicated to Newark’s industrial and technical history, where you can learn about glass blowing and canal building alongside the history of the region.

Around Newark there are also numerous ancient earthworks: huge mounds constructed by old Native Indian civilizations, that have survived to this day.

5. Miamisburg Mound

Miamisburg Mound

The Indian mounds aren’t only found around Newark, but exist in most of the state of Ohio.

One of the most interestingly shaped is the towering, conical Miamisburg Mound, raised on a high ridge and visible from miles away.

At 65-feet tall, it features a staircase through the center of the grassy mound which takes visitors to the top for panoramic views out over the surrounding area.

The Mound is one of thousands that have been discovered, the relics of lost civilizations, but Miamisburg is unique because of its height; few other surviving mounds can match it for size.

6. Olentangy Indian Caverns

Olentangy Indian Caverns

If you are interested in Native American history, then another great day trip from Ohio is a journey to the Olentangy Indian Caverns.

This natural cave system was used by the local native Huron people as shelter.

The caverns stretch over three floors and would have provided a refuge and safe haven in times of war, being difficult to find from above ground, let alone enter.

The caverns can be explored on underground tours led by local guides.

7. Tecumseh

Tecumseh Outdoor Historical Drama

Tecumseh is not a place, but a historical show that has to be seen when visiting Ohio.

This is an outdoor drama set in the hills of Ohio, and it tells the story of the local Indians; in particular the chief Tecumseh, who tried in vain to defend his land and people from colonization in the 1700s.

Because it is held outdoors, the show is only performed in the summer months, but it is worth scheduling your Columbus trip to coincide with a showing, as it receives accolades worldwide.

8. Amish Country Ohio

Amish Country Ohio

Northeast of Ohio is Amish Country, made up of several towns and cities, the largest of which is Millersburg.

This is a completely different world, where the Amish communities live in varied ways according to their beliefs in the Bible, meaning there is little technology and lots of faith.

You will see horse drawn carriages on the roads and traditional houses in the towns, while many of the communities actually speak Pennsylvania Dutch as their first language, rather than English.

9. Seneca Caverns

Seneca Caverns

Seneca Caverns is a huge underground cave system with miles of passageways and underground rivers that feed the region’s entire water system.

The cave is multi-layered and to date there are seven underground levels which can be explored.

Guides will take intrepid visitors through the system; exploring the caverns and narrow passages that lead further and further down.

It’s not known how deep the system really goes, but it’s certainly a long way.

10. Ludlow Falls

Ludlow Falls

Ohio has an abundance of beautiful waterfalls due to its rocky landscape, but Ludlow Falls stands out amongst them as a spectacular cascade.

Located near Dayton, not far from Columbus, Ludlow Falls is in fact hidden away beneath a bridge, making it difficult to spot.

The walk there is easy as long as you know where you are going, and it’s a quiet, secluded spot to enjoy Ohio’s enticing natural scenery.

11. Clifton Mill

Clifton Mill, Ohio

Clifton Mill is a beautifully scenic piece of Ohio heritage which dates back to 1802. The Mill is on the banks of the Clifton River, and is spectacular to see, with man-made waterfalls cascading down from its position above the river.

The Mill is water powered, and these days is more of a tourist attraction than a working mill.

There’s an on-site restaurant, and at Christmas time they put on an extravagant light display that’s famous across the state.

12. The Wilds, Cumberland

The Wilds, Cumberland

The Wilds is a unique, open-air Safari in Cumberland Ohio, where the animals roam free and visitors are taken around on big safari trucks to see rare and endangered wildlife in natural settings.

The Wilds is a non-profit organization; they put the animals first, and that’s why the facility is so popular.

They have species from across the world and educate people on conservation and responsibility rather than just providing entertainment at the expense of the captive animals.

13. Salt Fork State Park

Salt Fork Lake, Ohio

Salt Fork State Park is the largest of Ohio’s state parks, covering huge areas of forest east of Columbus.

It’s a beautiful place to hike, bike and get into the heart of Ohio’s natural environment, but it’s also known locally for the legend of Big Foot.

Believe what you will, but local lore says that it’s the home of this mythical creature.

Reported sightings have been made all across Salt Fork since the first European settlers arrived in the 1700s.

Documentaries have been filmed here and hardcore explorers head out into the wild to try and find this legendary creature.

They even hold a Big Foot conference here to celebrate this monstrous legend.

14. Cincinnati

Cincinnati, Ohio

An hour and a half south of Columbus is the city of Cincinnati: the third largest city in Ohio.

It’s the home of the Cincinnati Reds, the oldest baseball team in America.

Once just a sprawling industrial city, Cincinnati has reinvented itself as a tourist destination, offering great food and a growing cultural scene, all spread along the banks of the Ohio River.

The cityscape itself is one of the best reasons to visit, as the center has a huge concentration of distinct, 19th century architectural buildings from Cincinnati’s industrial boom days.

15. Cleveland

Cleveland, Ohio

Cleveland, Ohio’s second largest city, is found in a beautiful setting on the banks of the huge Lake Erie.

It is a culturally and historically significant city, dating back to the early days of European exploration of the Great Lakes.

Today it is most famous for being the home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: a museum showcasing the best of rock from across the world.

10 Day Trips from Columbus, Ohio—Local’s Guide

pinterest pin for day trips from Columbus, Ohio

People love to joke about how there’s nothing to do in Ohio, and as a native Ohioan, I’ve made my fair share of those jokes. While Ohio doesn’t have the most varied landscapes compared to the coasts, there are still plenty of interesting places to go and things to do.

I was born and raised in Columbus, so I’ve had plenty of time to explore the surrounding area. Here are some unique places to take a day or weekend trip, all within 2 hours of the city. Stay till the end for a free, interactive map!

Day/Weekend Trips from Columbus, Ohio

Note: Ohio doesn’t have a very robust public transport system, so all the time/distance estimates are based on driving times.

1. Yellow Springs

Distance: 1 hour Best for: small town charm, hippie vibes, hiking

The town of Yellow Springs in the fall with a yellow-leaf tree on the left and a mint building on the right with people selling tie dye shirts

Yellow Springs was originally founded in 1825 as a socialist utopian society. These days, it’s a colorful hippie town full of unique shops and restaurants. Rose & Sal is my personal favorite with its wide selection of vintage decor.

If you enjoy hiking, there’s around 11 miles of easy to moderate trails across three parks, including the Glen Helen Nature Preserve, John Bryan State Park, and Clifton Gorge .

Clifton Gorge is my favorite, as it has the most dramatic lanscapes with the layers of worn-away rock and turquoise waters. Nearby, you’ll find the 19th-century Clifton Mill where you can buy freshly-ground flour, take quaint photos, or have a meal overlooking the water. (Clifton is technically another town, but it’s only a few miles away).

See my post on things to do in Yellow Springs for more recommendations!

Want to extend your trip? Consider staying at this two-story cabin in Clifton.

2. Walnut Woods Metro Park

Distance: 30 minutes Best for: easy walks and photoshoots

Back of woman walking on a paved trail through a forest of tall pine trees at Tall Pines Area Walnut Woods

If you’re looking for a pleasant walk or photoshoot location, you can get both at Walnut Woods. In this metro park, you’ll find paved and unpaved trails, with one of the paved trails going through the stunning Tall Pines Area . This part of the forest feels especially peaceful and almost otherwordly. The impressive trees make for a lovely photo backdrop, and you’ll frequently see engagement or family shoots in the woods. If you do come for a photoshoot, be sure to be mindful of others using the trails.

For a similar forest experience, you can also visit Oak Openings Preserve Metro Park near Toledo. The park there is much larger and has more trails, but is further away (about 2.5 hours).

3. Hocking Hills

Distance: 1 hour Best for: hiking, antiques

Me with my back facing the camera looking at Rock House

Hocking Hills is a classic destination, and some of you may be groaning since you’ve been there countless times on school and family trips.

Most people do the Old Man’s Cave trail, which is just over 1 mile total and features some small waterfalls and interesting rock formations. You can also extend the hike to Cedar Falls, which is 6 miles round-trip.

If you’ve been-there-done-that, consider some of the other trails in Hocking Hills! I enjoyed the short 1-mile hike at Rock House , which had some impressive sandstone caves. Cantwell Cliffs is another 2-mile hike that has some scenic views. You can also try ziplining with Hocking Hills Canopy Tours .

If you like antiques, make a stop at the Logan Antique Mall on your way home. There are countless booths with quirky housewares and decorations.

Want to extend your trip? Consider staying at Hocking Cottage or this quaint guesthouse .

4. Mansfield

Distance: 1 hour Best for: thrifting, small town charm

City News neon sign in downton Mansfield Ohio

In my opinion, Mansfield isn’t a super interesting destination in itself, but it’s home to an incredible Volunteers of America thrift store. The one at 1280 Park Ave W is full of affordable and stylish finds. I purchased a handful of things from there four years ago, and I still regularly wear all of those pieces.

While the town itself is small, there’s a cute carousel for families and a popular coffee shop called Relax, It’s Just Coffee.

5. Mohican State Park

Distance: 1 hour Best for: hiking, kayaking

Mohican is another classic destination for outdoorsy folks. There are miles and miles of trails for hiking, trail running, and mountain biking. In fact, there are annual ultramarathons and ultra bike races in the park that go up to 100 miles! The trails can be pretty hilly and rocky, so I’d recommend wearing hiking boots.

People also like to picnic, camp, and kayak in the area. For active travelers, Mohican Adventures has a 7- or 15-mile canoeing route and an aerial adventure park.

Want to extend your trip? Consider staying at this cabin nestled in the heart of the park.

6. Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Distance: 1-2 hours Best for: easy hikes, biking, farmer’s markets

The overlook at Ledge's Trail during the golden hour, with the sun filtering through the trees

Ohio’s only national park isn’t all that far from Columbus, depending on which part of the park you want to visit.

A popular trail is Ledges Trail , an easy two-mile hike with 200 feet of elevation gain. You’ll walk through impressive layered rock structures and finish at a scenic overlook, where many people watch the sunset.

There are also several waterfalls of all sizes, including larger Brandywine Falls and small (but lovely) Blue Hen Falls .

If hiking isn’t for you, you can bike along the Erie Canal Towpath, ride the scenic railway, or stop at the Szalay’s Farm & Market.

See my post on Cuyahoga Valley National Park for more details!

Want to extend your trip? Consider staying at  Country Inn and Suites , a 10-15 minute drive from the most popular parts of the park.

7. Amish Country

Distance: 2 hours Best for: rural landscapes, antiques, local food

Old white garage covered in vintage signs

Amish Country is home to the Amish community, a religious group best known for rejecting modern technology. You can learn about Amish history and their lifestyle at The Apline Hills Museum or The Amish Farm and House .

Popular stops include Sugarcreek, which is known as the “Little Switzerland” of Ohio. The small town has some classic Swiss architecture and the world’s largest cuckoo clock (it sounds more impressive than it is haha, but it’s still very cute). For all your fairy garden needs, visit the Secret Garden shop . It feels like a different world inside the store with the floral decorations, tiny figurines, and indoor fountains.

For a huge antique mall and craft mall, check out the Berlin Village Antique Mall . I would avoid the Walnut Creek Flea Market since it’s mostly mass-produced goods and isn’t really a flea market at all. There are some lovely local sellers, but it’s mainly a tourist trap.

As a plant-based traveler, I noticed that the area doesn’t have a lot of vegan-friendly options, but Park St. Pizza had delicious vegan pizza and a build your own option.

I also want to note that the area is very visibly pro-Trump and pro-gun (like most of rural Ohio), so certain people may not feel comfortable or safe there. The Amish generally don’t participate in politics, but the other residents of the area will have political signs in their yards and sell merch in local shops (it’s very prevalent at the Walnut Creek Flea Market).

Want to extend your trip? Consider staying at this cozy cottage .

8. Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park

Distance: 30 minutes Best for: walking, nature center, bison

Herd of bison in their prairie enclosure at Battelle Darby

A herd of bison roams across two large prairies in Battle Darby Creek Metro Park. Come to see the bison, walk the trails, or visit the nature center. There are trails from .2 to 12.5 miles of all hiking levels across the park’s 7,000 acres of land. The nature center is small, but has a sunny observation deck overlooking the prairies and has plenty of educational resources on the bison and surrounding wildlife.

9. Cleveland

Distance: 2 hours Best for: food, rock n’ roll, art

Cleveland Arcarde Victorian architecture

Commonly mistaken as the capital of Ohio, Cleveland has plenty to do for families, friend groups, and solo travelers.

The Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame is probably the most iconic attraction, featuring interactive exhibits and items used by rock and roll legends.

Foodies will appreciate the West Side Market , which has 100 vendors offering produce, desserts, and ready-to-eat meals. Columbus residents may see it as the Cleveland equivalent of our North Market.

One of the most photo-worthy spots is the Cleveland Arcade , which was the very first indoor shopping center in America. The exposed beams and Victorian architecture are really stunning. Nowadays, the shopping isn’t that interesting, and individual stores have limited hours, but it’s worth stopping by just to admire the building.

The Cleveland Museum of Art has a wide collection of art from around the world. Admission is free, though some special exhibitions and events may have an extra charge.

Want to extend your trip? Consider staying at this downtown condo .

10. Cincinnati

Distance: 2 hours Best for:  city views, museums, sports

Suspension bridge overlooking the Ohio River into Cincinnati at sunset

Another major city in Ohio, Cincinnati is right along the Ohio River at the southern border of the state. Take a walk along the riverfront and laze around on the swinging benches overlooking the water. You can even stroll across the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge and end up in Kentucky!

The city is also home to the American Sign Museum , which is is dedicated to literal signs from 1870-1970. You can your fix of neon sign pics for your Instagram haha.

Want to extend your trip? Consider staying in this modern apartment with a lovely view of the city.

That’s so interesting they wanted to start a socialist society. It seems the area has a lot of alternative lifestyle models in terms of people who want to live apart from the rest of society. Super interesting. The Amish have always kind of fascinated me because they speak a very outdated version of German, but I had no idea they were pro-Trump (or is that mainly the rest of the population in the area?).

It is such an interesting area! I adore Yellow Springs because it’s a super progressive bubble in the middle of rural Ohio haha. I believe the Amish don’t really participate in politics; it’s mainly the other residents of the area that have their Trump signs and merch in local shops.

Why did you say if they feel safe because it’s a pro Trump area. Are you insane? It’s not the East side of Columbus Ohio where gangs are at for God’s sake. So sad you felt the need to “go there” with that awful comment. You’re no longer welcome to our town with that horribly troubled attitude of hatred.😢

You’ve literally just proved my point by being hateful yourself and saying I’m not welcome in your area, after I merely pointed out that some people may not feel comfortable in an area where people visibly support a person who is hateful towards minorities. I myself had a very uncomfortable experience there that had racist undertones. Hope you find peace in your life.

Good list! I’m surprised Athens wasn’t mentioned, though.

I actually haven’t been yet! Adding it to my list since my parents went to grad school there actually 🙂

Visiting Columbus, Ohio: 1-Day, 2-Day & 3-Day Itineraries

Written by Anietra Hamper Updated Apr 14, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Ohio's capital city of Columbus is an artsy and sporty cosmopolitan city with Midwestern roots. You will find activities and destinations that pay homage to the state's agricultural industry, and sections of neighborhoods made up of dozens of ethnic groups making their first homes in America.

What this means for visitors trying to plan an itinerary is that you can visit a world-class art museum or catch a live fashion show one minute, and fill a basket of just-picked produce from a local farmers market the next.

It means that you can cheer on NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets for the win or catch a fly-ball during a Columbus Clipper's baseball game at Huntington Park, then grab dinner at one of the many local ethnic restaurants representing more than 40 nationalities.

With these one-, two-, and three-day itineraries in Columbus, you can get a mix of the highlights while working in some appreciation for the finer details of the city that turn first-time visitors into yearly vacationers.

On This Page:

  • One-Day Itinerary
  • Two-Day Itinerary
  • Three-Day Itinerary

ONE-DAY ITINERARY

Columbus skyline from bridge with sculpture

Things to Do in One Day in Columbus: If your trip is a quick one in the capital city, it is best to start in the downtown area then expand into the nearby neighborhoods of the Short North to the north and German Village to the south, if time permits.

Start with a visit in the heart of the city at the Ohio Statehouse. There are regular free tours offered daily, or you can explore the Capital Square complex on your own. The outside grounds are filled with statues, monuments, and hidden finds like a small bee aviary on one side of the statehouse.

Ohio Statehouse

The statehouse museum gift shop has unique Ohio-made treasures to take home with you. Walk a few blocks to the Scioto Mile along the riverfront and grab lunch from a local food truck vendor as you enjoy the Scioto River from one of the many benches located along the green space.

If you want to stay in the heart of downtown, you can spend the rest of the day at one of the top attractions in the city , the National Veterans Memorial and Museum, and catch an afternoon baseball game at Huntington Park .

This district is a pedestrian-friendly area, so you can spend an afternoon here and stop for a coffee or bite to eat at one of the local eateries before taking a stroll in Goodale Park. Make your way to the historic North Market, where you can buy fresh produce, baked goods, cheeses, and ethnic food from local vendors.

Another great half-day option is in German Village, where you can walk the brick side streets to boutique shops and cafés. You can get a take-out lunch at one of the notable German Village restaurants, like The Thurman Cafe or Katzinger's Deli, and head to Schiller Park to enjoy a picnic. Walk off lunch by going to the famed Book Loft , one of the largest independent bookstores in the United States, with 32 rooms to explore.

CoGo bicycles in downtown Columbus

Getting Around: Depending on your style, you can explore downtown Columbus with Columbus City Adventures guided tours or tackle the landscape on your own by foot.

A fun way to explore downtown is with a bike rental from a CoGo Bike Share rental station. There are more than 40 CoGo rental stations throughout downtown Columbus, so you can pick one up in one spot and drop it off at another station when you are ready to return it.

Columbus is a bike-friendly city, with dedicated bike lanes throughout downtown and into adjacent neighborhoods. You can ride down to the Scioto Mile along the riverfront and North Bank Park , which are connection points to trails that extend into Columbus suburbs.

Where to Eat: Columbus is home to Schmidt's Sausage Haus , which has served authentic German cuisine and their famous cream puffs in German Village since 1967.

This beloved eatery was started by a family that was among the first German settlers to the city. If you have an adventurous palate, you can try one of the many small ethnic restaurants near downtown to sample Somali, Indian, Nigerian, and Vietnamese dishes.

Columbus food truck

The Columbus food truck scene is big, and you can download an app to find where local trucks are located each day to cater to your current food mood or location. More than 200 food trucks drive their way around the city at any given time, serving up gourmet grilled cheese, alphabet soup, pita sandwiches, breakfast, vegan food, Korean kimbap, and every foodie combo imaginable.

One of the newest dining concepts in Columbus is at the Budd Dairy Food Hall . This renovated dairy production house has a roster of local chefs that create food offerings that change periodically. It is designed like an upscale food court, with selections that range from Filipino street food and Southern fare to pizza and tacos.

If you want to relax with a full dinner menu and some of the best views of the downtown skyline and riverfront with floor-to-ceiling windows you can dine at The Boathouse Restaurant or Milestone 229 at Bicentennial Park .

Where to Stay in Columbus: Lodging options in Columbus range from boutique hotels with executive suites to budget hotels with simple offerings for a good value.

TWO-DAY ITINERARY

Ohio Theatre

Day 1 With two-days in Columbus, you can expand your sightseeing a bit more. You may want to follow the one-day itinerary to start, since it includes the top things to see, or you can explore the more cultural side of Columbus.

You can start your day with a free public yoga class at the Columbus Commons downtown then begin your cultural excursion at the Columbus Museum of Art , where you can peruse the galleries and stay for lunch at the museum's Schokko café.

Spend the afternoon at the Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, where you can experience every biome in the world in a single visit or take a glass-blowing class. Cap off the day with a Broadway performance at the historic Ohio Theatre .

A polar bear family at the Columbus Zoo

Day 2 Things to Do: With added time in your itinerary, spend your next day exploring the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium . If it is summertime, you can also enjoy Zoombezi Bay water park, which is popular with families. The zoo is consistently ranked as one of the top in the United States, with exciting animal encounter exhibits and demonstrations throughout the sprawling grounds.

While a zoo visit will take up most of the day, you can leave time to explore some of the nearby suburbs, which have great parks and social areas, like Ballantrae Park in Dublin , or stop by a farmers market in historic downtown Powell .

Another full-day excursion that you can plan is at the Ohio History Center and Ohio Village , which are both located in the same complex. The Ohio Village is an outdoor living history museum designed to look like a late 1800s village. There are special events at the village throughout the year, but it is fun to visit anytime.

If you are lucky, you might catch the Ohio Village Muffins baseball team in action in vintage uniforms and playing by the rules of the game from the late 19 th century. The Ohio History Center located next to the village has several floors of indoor exhibits about Ohio history.

Where to Eat: A great way to wrap up your day is with dinner at one of the sure-to-satisfy-hungry-appetites restaurants like Mikey's Late Night Slice, which is a pizza-craver's favorite downtown, or the Happy Greek, one of dozens of great restaurants in the Short North.

Stop at one of the Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams locations in town for an unforgettable dessert, like pistachio and honey ice-cream using all farm-sourced ingredients.

THREE-DAY ITINERARY

Easton Town Center

Day 1 & Day 2

If your visit to Columbus extends to three days, you will be able cover the best of the must-see attractions and food while working in some extra opportunities to enjoy the city. You can follow Day 1 and Day 2 itineraries as they suit your interests.

Day 3 Things to Do : Since you will likely cover the heart of downtown and possibly the fringe of the downtown area, Day 3 is your chance to explore the two premier shopping and entertainment complexes at Easton and Polaris. Both have expansive shopping opportunities in multi-level malls and adjacent outdoor shopping plazas.

Easton Town Center is east of downtown with more than 300 top retailers like Apple, Tiffany & Co., American Girl dolls, Nordstrom, and more. There is a 30-theater cinema with dine-in movie options, a comedy house, and outdoor concerts in the summer. Polaris Fashion Place is an indoor-outdoor shopping complex with more than 200 retailers and locally owned boutique stores with Ohio-made products. The Polaris area stretches beyond the main mall complex and down the street into satellite shopping centers. This area also has a Cabela's and IKEA.

If you are not in the shopping mood and looking for another all-day alternative you can enjoy the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) in downtown. COSI is a main fixture along the riverfront and a popular attraction for families. It is a Columbus staple that features interactive and hands-on science education.

Take a ride on the High Wire Unicycle to test your fear of heights as you pedal along an 84-foot cable suspended two-stories in the air. Just outside of COSI on the Scioto River, you can take a guided kayak trip on the Scioto River in the summer, or head to nearby Scioto Audubon Metro Park to tackle the climbing wall and outdoor recreation area.

German Village offers popular dining options

Where to Eat: There are several local restaurants with a long history in Columbus that are must-trys if you have extra time in the city. Take on the Thurmanator Challenge at The Thurman Café in German Village.

Anyone who can finish the mammoth 12-ounce burger surrounded by a bun, mayo, lettuce, pickle, tomato, sautéed mushrooms, banana peppers, ham, onions, and cheese between the buns gets serious respect and bragging rights around town. While the Thurmanator Challenge is famous at the café, they also have delicious regular-sized burgers.

Another local favorite with a long history in Columbus is Dirty Frank's Hot Dog Palace . You dream up the dog-Dirty Frank's has it. You can choose from more than 50 a-la-carte toppings or put all 50 on your hot dog.

Even vegans can enjoy a wide menu at Dirty Frank's, as most items come in a vegetarian option. The restaurant is a fun visit beyond the delicious dogs, as there is a vibrant collection of pop art along the walls.

Start your third day in Columbus at the Highbanks Metro Park. You can get there by bus, but we recommend taking Uber to save time. Escape the city for a while and explore the natural beauty of Ohio. Wander a path and admire the wildlife. Be sure to hike to overlook the amazing river views.

When you’re done, head to the Otherworld Museum. An Uber ride will take about 30 minutes. This modern museum is full of immersive art installations. It’s a really cool experience and something unusual and unique to do when you visit.

Ohio Theater

Afterward, make your way to Kingmakers in Columbus for some local fun. To get there catch the 25 bus from Chantry Drive to Gender Rd & Refuge Rd, then the 5 bus to N High St & Warren St. Enjoy a drink and a board game at this local board game club.

End your night seeing a performance at The Ohio Theater. From Kingmakers to the theater is about a five-minute drive (1.5 miles). Make sure to check their calendar before you visit for their list of performances.

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.

A sunset over a dock on the lake

431 Catawba Ave | Put In Bay, OH | Put-in-Bay.com

Time from Columbus, OH: 2 hours

Put-in-Bay is one of Ohio’s hidden treasures. Located on the shore of Lake Erie, Put-in-Bay is only accessible by ferry and offers a small, beach town atmosphere to enjoy! When coming to Put-in-Bay, cars are allowed but parking is limited. The common way of getting around the island is by golf cart rentals, which can be rented at most hotels or house rentals. Put in Bay is great for a family trip, a girls weekend, or even a relaxing weekend away by yourself!

Whether you want to enjoy your days lounging on the beach alongside the lake, biking around town, shopping, fishing, or riding golf carts through the village, there is something for everyone here! Put-in-Bay may be small, but the nightlife is huge here and there’s a bar for whatever atmosphere you’re looking for. If you’re a fan of going out, Put-in-Bay won’t disappoint. After a night out, wake up to a view of the lake and a relaxing day down by the water!

“A mix of things for people of all ages to do in the Village of Put-In-Bay. It has been called "the Key West of The Great Lakes," and I can see why. The harbor has the fell of a seaside town. Views are beautiful. It is worth taking a short walk around the harbor. Lots of restaurants.” – Yelp Review

3. The Wilds

The Wilds welcome sign

14000 International Rd. | Cumberland, OH | The Wilds

Time from Columbus, OH: 1.5 hours

The Wilds is a wildlife experience like no other. Unlike a traditional zoo where the animals are in habitats that you can see while you walk a guided path, The WIlds offers a different experience. At The Wilds, you can choose from several different guided tours that take you out to the pastures on a bus or truck where the animals reside so that you can see them as close to their natural habitats as possible. Unlike a traditional zoo, you can see the animals out in the wild as you explore The Wild’s fields.

There are different tours The Wilds offer, ranging from a two-hour tour through the pastures on a bus to look at the animals, to a longer tour in the bed of a truck that goes off the traditional path so that you can get up close and personal with the animals. Another aspect of The Wilds is the chance to go on their zipline course where you can fly over the animals and see them from above! The Wilds offers two different zipline courses you can take, each ranging from a short zipline experience to a longer one with more trails and ziplines to choose from.

“I love this place!! The Wilds is set on over 100 acres I believe and it feels like you're in another country ... not Ohio. The landscape is vast and beautiful!” – Yelp Review

4. Lake Erie

People playing on the beach

1566 S Shore Dr. | Erie, PA | VisitErie.com

Time from Columbus, OH: 4 hours

Lake Erie is a great place to go if you’re missing the feeling of laying on a beach, or floating in the ocean. While you won’t find an ocean here and the sand isn’t quite like the Bahamas, Lake Erie is a beautiful place to go with the family if you want to enjoy a day in the sun! You can lay on the beach and enjoy the sun, or head to the water to partake in the water sport of your choosing. Or, bring a pool float and relax in the water!

Not only does Lake Erie offer you a sun-soaked getaway, but there are also many adventures you can go on at Lake Erie! From waterparks, going to the theater, sled riding in the winter, and many amazing restaurants to choose from, Lake Erie is the perfect place to spend the day or extend your trip for the weekend! There are many accommodations at Lake Erie to stay at, and even more activities to explore.

“A nice place to get away from typical city living! Early spring and fall, once the kiddos have gone back to school, make for great uncrowded beach time on Presque Isle.” – Tripadvisor Review

5. Ohio Caverns

Stalacites in a cave

2210 State Rte. 245 E | West Liberty, OH | OhioCaverns.com

Time from Columbus, OH: 1 hour

Deemed “America’s most colorful caverns,” the Ohio Caverns are definitely a must see for anyone who lives in Ohio or is just visiting! There are two tours available at Ohio Caverns: the historic tour and the natural wonder tour. The historic tour is a guided tour through the original caverns that were discovered between 1897 and 1925. Each tour offers a different look at the caverns, and if you have enough time you can take both!

The natural wonder tour is a guided tour through the caverns discovered after 1925. The natural wonder tour is the more scenic of the two with features like the largest stalactite cave in Ohio. After your tour, enjoy a picnic on the property and enjoy the nice day! The property has many picnic site options to choose from, so you can either picnic in the sun or under the shade of some trees while you watch the sun set. If you’re a fan of adventure and seeing new things, The Ohio Caverns are a must visit!

“We checked out the Ohio Caverns and we were glad that we did. There are two tours that you can go on, the historical and the Natural Wonder tour. The historical was the original cavern and is the less spectacular one. Natural Wonders tour is highly recommended. If you have time, you can actually do both caverns.” – Tripadvisor Review

Journalism students studying international media return from eye-opening study abroad trip to Germany

Nerissa Young Germany

Seven journalism students in Associate Professor of Instruction Nerissa Young’s International Mass Media course recently returned from an eight-day trip to Germany that changed their perspectives on media in the United States and around the world.

“Having family in Germany, I loved the idea of getting to better understand their history, especially in how it shaped German media today,” said Erin Brogan, a sophomore strategic communication major. “I have always been very intrigued by the propaganda and media aspect of the Holocaust, as I have always felt like it is a huge aspect often overlooked.” The eight-week international media course explores the development and operations of world mass communication channels and agencies. It began with the study abroad trip to Berlin and Leipzig, Germany, and now students will spend the rest of the course doing a comparative analysis of media, media practices and flow of news throughout the world. Students are learning about media systems and how they are influenced by historical, cultural and political forces and are exploring the development of current German news media organizations beginning with the Weimar Republic through Nazi Germany, the German Democratic Republic, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of Germany.

“This is a wonderful experience for our students to have,” said Young. “The gist of the course is looking at media systems within the context of the region’s history, culture and politics and experiencing that in person is important to understanding it completely.”

For some students, the trip further underscored the First Amendment rights in the U.S.

“While our country has its issues, one thing I think many people take for granted is the rights to expression we have in the United States,” said Nicholas Wood, a journalism graduate student. “Journalists in other parts of the world aren’t always given that privilege, and international students in the same program as me have had experiences facing persecution or jail time for doing their job where they live. Until just over 30 years ago, half of Germany couldn’t freely publish information opposing their government. Sharing these stories is crucial. They remind us of how powerful the media truly is, how necessary it is to honor that power and how quickly that power can be taken away.”

Brogan also found perspective in thinking about the purpose of journalism in the United States.

“Seeing the way current German news outlets prioritize unbiased and factual information made me take a step back and analyze journalism in our own country,” said Brogan. “I think so often we get caught up in politics and our opinions that we forget what the news is meant to do. The news should not revolve around our own opinions or be targeted to slander another person or part, but rather, inform our audience with accurate, relevant information.”

During the trip, students had the opportunity to tour many German historic sites, which included the Berlin Wall and Checkpoint Charlie, as well as visit MDR Studios, which serves central Germany with news and entertainment media, and the European Centre for Press and Media Freedom.

“While we were in Leipzig we got to hear from Hazal Ocak, an investigative journalist from Turkey and a journalist in residence with the European Centre for Press and Media Freedom. She is temporarily staying in the city to write a book recounting her experience being sued by the Turkish president’s director of communications after publishing an article exposing some of his illegal activity,” said Brogan. “I think this experience during our trip was what had the greatest impact on my perspective of journalism.”

Wood echoed the value of the experience.

“I think the biggest thing I took away from this trip was how different a relationship we in the U.S. have with our country’s history compared to Germany,” said Wood. “There just seemed to be a general sense of humility in their approach to discussing the dark parts of their past, and I admired that. In the U.S., I think there’s a tendency to try and put a positive spin on things to not sully people’s perceptions of our country or maintain some sense of national pride. Recognizing this difference led me to reexamine a lot of what I’d been taught.”

Myles Garrett On Browns Playoff Loss To Texans: "At Forefront Of My Mind"

Spencer german | jun 12, 2024.

Browns defensive end Myles Garrett looks on during day 1 of the team's mandatory minicamp

  • Cleveland Browns

All things consider, the 2023 season was a pretty satisfying one for Browns defensive end Myles Garrett.

The anchor of the NFL's No 1. rated defense, Garrett dominated his way to the top individual award for a player at his position, winning the first Defensive Player of the Year Award of his seven-year career. All the while he helped lead the franchise back to the playoffs for the first time since 2020, with the team finishing 11-6 despite starting five different quarterbacks throughout the year.

Sports are a fickle thing though. So despite the undeniable success Garrett and the Browns produced in 2023, an embarrassing 45-14 loss to the Houston Texans on Wild Card weekend remains as a lasting stain on an otherwise memorable campaign.

Garrett hasn't stopped thinking about it since.

"It's definitely at the forefront of my mind always," said Garrett. "That's the last taste of football that we all had. I plan to make that apparent to everyone and continue to keep it as motivation for myself that we stepped out, we didn't get the job done, we didn't execute and we fell short of our goals."

The loss itself is bad enough for Garrett. However, the former No. 1 overall pick has also had to stew over the fact that he produced one of his worst performances of the season against the Texans as well. When the final whistle blew, Garrett had recorded just three total tackles, not a single one was a sack.

He had no QB hits. No tackles for loss. In the most important game of the season he had been rendered useless. It's no wonder he's refusing to be satisfied despite fulfilling a number of personal goals in 2023.

Myles Garrett admitted today that the #Browns playoff loss to the Texans is: "still at the forefront of his mind" pic.twitter.com/fRDJEXRnQz — 𝚂𝚙𝚎𝚗𝚌𝚎𝚛 𝙶𝚎𝚛𝚖𝚊𝚗 (@Spencito_) June 12, 2024

"It'll never be enough," Garrett said. "I might feel a little bit of satisfaction once we win one for Cleveland, but then it's always the next year. Not going to stop until the body tells me it's time to hang them up, until I stop having fun, until I stop loving this game and wanting to be in here with my teammates. Until that stage, I'm going to be in here giving my all and just trying to do my best to improve this team."

So how does someone follow up winning Defensive Player of the Year?

"God willing, building the success that we had last year," said Garrett." But have everyone be healthy and go win the Super Bowl. That’s where my eyes are only."
