Ronnie Wood, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Charlie Watts of The Rolling Stones perform onstage during Desert Trip at The Empire Polo Club on October 7, 2016 in Indio, California

Desert Trip review - McCartney, Stones and co give Oldchella a hint of rebellion

CEOs and chakra readers, dads and daughters rubbed shoulders at the high-rolling festival where rock trumped politics, and vacation-casual beat party chic

S hortly after Sunday night’s US presidential debate , Roger Waters floated out his famous giant inflatable pig in Indio, California, with a special election-year message: “Ignorant, lying, racist, sexist PIG – Fuck Trump and his wall.”

The finale of Desert Trip , festival behemoth Goldenvoice ’s classic-rock spin on its cash cow Coachella , brought its audience back to reality with this overt, aggressive political message. On Friday, a few hours before the first of three baby-boomer bucket-list double headers – Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones, Neil Young and Paul McCartney, the Who and Roger Waters – a 2005 video recording leaked of Donald Trump’s lewd conversation with a TV host and left the world speechless.

An inflatable pig carrying political slogans flies above the crowd at Empire Polo Club during Roger Waters’ closing set on 9 October.

By Sunday night, the audience were preparing to return to the national nightmare via the second debate, but for a trio of blissful days, it was an opportunity to travel back to simpler, pre-Reagan years. Wealthy and abashed GOP-ers gulped $29 glasses of Silver Oak cabernet and sidled up next to self-righteous silver-haired Democrat hippies to ask sheepishly for a toke off their joints, and we all, CEOs and chakra readers, dads and daughters, young and old, disappeared into the music.

When golden gods of rock are your escorts, of course, that escape comes at a price: tickets alone already generated a cool $160m from the estimated 75,000 attendees. A general admission weekend pass to the fest cost $399, but to stand in line for overpriced wine with Leonardo DiCaprio or Tommy Lee, both of whom were spotted at the festival, you had to pony up $1,599 for tickets in the pit. And if comfort trumped star sightings (and for most of the graying folks dressed in vacation-casual attire, I’m guessing it did), you could nab a reserved, padded seat for somewhere in between.

Fans the Who perform at Empire Polo Club, Indio.

For the most part, the music was worth its eye-widening price tag. At 73, Mick Jagger strutted down the catwalk better than Cara Delevingne, who was watching the Rolling Stones’ ecstatic set of nonstop hits. Dangling a cigarette from one hand and grinning crookedly, Keith Richards played with obvious joy. Neil Young delivered the best line of the festival (“Come back tomorrow night – Roger’s gonna build a wall and make Mexico great again”) and ripped into a 20-plus-minute rendition of Down by the River. Paul McCartney stayed on stage for almost three hours, the Who roared what seemed to be the loudest set of the festival and Waters saved the whole thing from being stuck in the past by using the stage as a political platform. Dylan elicited some grumbles by not saying a word to the audience or allowing his face to be shown on the big screens, but a fan plugging up his phone to a charging station shrugged and said he’d been the same way when he saw him play in 1978.

When news of Desert Trip’s two-show-per-night lineup and cushy seating options broke in mid-April, it coincided with Coachella, the sweaty, frantic festival that squeezes in nearly 60 shows and 100,000 partiers per day. Desert Trip quickly and sneeringly was dubbed “Oldchella” – a name bolstered by the sofa areas and expensive jackfruit vegan nachos on display this weekend.

Paul McCartney and Neil Young share the stage at Desert Trip.

The grounds opened early in the afternoon, but shows didn’t start until the sun had begun to set, which solved two problems: burning and melting under a blistering sun, and dressing for the desert’s wild temperature swing from daytime sweltering to evening frigid. Speaking of clothing, Coachella has morphed into as much of a fashion show as a music festival, with girls draping themselves in their Stevie Nicks finest and dying to be snapped for a best-dressed blog slideshow.

Not at Oldchella, however. There were still girls in rainbow shortalls and fringed shirts, and guys in artfully ripped jeans and flannel shirts, but most people were dressed for ease of movement or, charmingly and dorkily, in the band souvenir shirts they’d already purchased. Because here’s the thing: the people who came to Oldchella to be cool were far outnumbered by the people who came to see the bands they loved, maybe for the last time ever.

Rolling Stones Cover the Beatles’ ‘Come Together,’ Play New Blues Song at Desert Trip

More than 50 years after " I Wanna Be Your Man ," the Rolling Stones are once again singing Beatles songs. Last night (Oct. 7), they kicked off Desert Trip in Indio, Calif., by covering "Come Together," which is embedded above.

Admitting it was "strange," Mick Jagger said, "We're gonna do a cover song of some sort of unknown beat group. [I] think you might remember. We're gonna try a cover of one of their tunes." Then he asked, "Are you ready?" three times and launched into the Abbey Road chestnut, which also featured a harmonica solo from the singer in the outro.

Paul McCartney , who, according to Yahoo! Music , witnessed the Stones' set from a VIP box and pumped his fist during "Come Together," plays Desert Trip tonight. Let's see if he repays the favor.

The Stones' 20-song set also included " Ride 'Em on Down ," a 1955 single by Eddie Taylor, which Setlist.fm says was played at their first-ever performance , at London's Marquee Club on July 12, 1962. "Ride 'Em on Down," the performance of which is embedded below, will appear on their upcoming collection of blues songs, Blue & Lonesome . The album, which was recorded live in the studio with no overdubs over three days and features Eric Clapton on two songs, will be released Dec. 2.

Bob Dylan served as the opening act, delivering 16 songs that saw him perform seven songs from his post- Time Out of Mind comeback, although nothing from his two recent collections of standards. He closed with "Ballad of a Thin Man" from Highway 61 Revisited and encored with "Masters of War," from The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan .

What a buzz rocking the Desert! Thank you Desert Trip, Neil Young, Rihanna, and everyone! Desert Trip you went by too fast! Paul McCartney – From paulmccartney.com , October 17, 2016

From RollingStone , August 16, 2016:

Paul McCartney’s second Desert Trip gig featured an unexpected guest as the singer welcomed Rihanna to the stage to perform their joint “ FourFiveSeconds. “ “ We finally found someone under the age of 50, ” McCartney joked as Rihanna exited the stage following the performance, making light of the Desert Trip demographic. “ FourFiveSeconds, ” also co-written by Kanye West, has been a mainstay in both Rihanna and Paul McCartney’s set lists since the single’s arrival in January 2015. McCartney and Rihanna’s “ FourFiveSeconds ” duet at Desert Trip marked the first time the singers had performed the track together since the 2015 Grammy Awards. Like McCartney’s Desert Trip set on October 8th, Neil Young, his partner on the Saturday night bill, again joined the Beatle onstage to perform “ A Day in the Life ” mashed up with John Lennon’s “ Give Peace a Chance ” as well as the “ White Album ” rocker “ Why Don’t We Do It in the Road? “

From Twitter - What a buzz rocking the Desert! Thank you #DesertTrip @NeilYoung @rihanna and everyone! ? ✌ @DesertTripIndio

From paulmccartney.com , December 2016:

In October, over two weekends, Paul appeared at the Desert Trip music festival in Indio (CA). In between the two weekend shows, Paul played a surprise gig to 300 lucky fans at Pappy and Harriet’s Palace in Pioneertown (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Paul:  Desert Trip was a trip. Just being in that company! First weekend, we went on the Friday to see Bob Dylan and The Stones. It was very exciting seeing them anyway, but seeing them in this big desert occasion was great. And then the next night there was Neil Young, and us, and then the next night there was The Who and Roger Waters, of Pink Floyd. It was a heck of a line up, quite a historic weekend! We enjoyed it the first weekend. And then the second weekend I think we were even more settled in. First weekend, Neil guested with us, which was great. Second weekend he guested with us again, and this time he played a longer solo. It was just a joy. Because, I’ve known him a long time, and being beside his beaming face and both of us grinning like Cheshire Cats. It was great fun. And the audience loved it, and it was a huge audience! And then Rihanna playing on the second weekend! She’s such a cool girl. Great singer. We had hardly any rehearsal, but it was pretty much the record. We did it like the record and I took Kanye’s part, so that was very exciting.   Then midweek, we decided we’d just do a crazy pop-up thing, at this biker’s roadhouse in Pioneertown, which is near the Joshua Tree National Park. We actually arrived in the area a bit early, so we could go to the National Park. We all went, got out the car, had our photos taken with the Joshua Trees and even though we didn’t stay long, it was nice, it was sunset. It was great and we had a band photo taken. And then we sort of hopped off and then went to Pappy and Harriet’s, which is this biker roadhouse. A great little gig. It was pretty magical because there was a little barn, where we got to rehearse in. But all our gear was at the little gig, so we didn’t have any equipment. We just had to rehearse acoustically! So you know, when it was time for the guitar solo of ‘Junior’s Farm’, like, “Take me down, Junior!” We all had to go really quiet, so you could hear Rusty. It was great though. Somebody, a reviewer I think, was with some kids who couldn’t get in, and they actually really enjoyed this little rehearsal – they could hear it! And they had to have listened hard, because we had to play so quietly! But it was fun when the solo came around, we all just went to like zero volume almost. That was a good thing, it set us up. Then we did the gig, which was just hot and sweaty. And we’d invited David Hockney, a great English painter. He came and I said, “David, I hope you’re gonna sketch this!” He said, “Oh, I haven’t got anything with me.” And I said, “Well, what about your iPad?” He’s really good on the iPad, he paints on it. And he said, “Oh, I haven’t…” And then somebody said, “Your iPhone!” So he did. He sketched on his iPhone. I haven’t seen any results yet, but he loved the gig apparently. He sent us a note saying that that he loved it. It was a very special little show. And that’s it – 2016!

Paul McCartney Plays 2016 Desert Trip Set: Review

Paul McCartney performs onstage during Desert Trip (Photo by Kevin Mazur/Getty Images for Desert Trip)

Paul McCartney performs onstage during Desert Trip (Photo by Kevin Mazur/Getty Images for Desert Trip)

Like the Rolling Stones 24 hours earlier, who had no trouble following  Bob Dylan , the second night of the three-day Desert Trip festival in California belonged to show-closer  Paul McCartney . Even though opener  Neil Young had much of the buzz, Paul McCartney is, after all, Paul McCartney. The first portion of his October 8, 2016, set was an ode to the Beatles and Wings, with “A Hard Day’s Night,” “Jet” and “Can’t Buy Me Love” starting things off. Following his one wardrobe change, which consisted of him tossing his jacket aside, Macca stormed through a delightful array of hits and jokes, and even one Rihanna/Kanye West collaboration in “FourFiveSeconds.”

Watch the anticipation of the crowd as the band came on stage to perform “A Hard Day’s Night”

However, the problem with latter-year McCartney is that if you’ve seen him at his hamminess once, you’ve probably seen it all. That’s not to say there weren’t a few surprises. Bringing Young up for “A Day in the Life,” “Give Peace a Chance” and “Why Don’t We Do It in the Road” were the first of the much ballyhooed Desert Trip collaborations and it was great. But, there wasn’t much rhyme or reason, nor flow, to the set.

Watch McCartney perform “Why Don’t We Do It in the Road” live for the first time ever, with Neil Young

Dusting off “I Wanna Be Your Man” for the first time since 1993 was a surprise, but as is the norm at a Paul McCartney show, people want to hear the hits. It was the more candid moments, like dedicating “Love Me Do” to George Martin, and talking about the meaning of “Blackbird” and how it resonates today, that provided some of the more poignant moments of the show.

With a crowd-thrilling encore of the Abbey Road medley putting the night to rest, Desert Trip’s first two days managed to top the “Oldchella” crowd’s hopes and expectations for a weekend to remember.

The Who Play Desert Trip #SETLIST

by Paul Cashmere on October 10, 2016

The Who have opened day three of the historic Desert Trip concerts in the California desert, featuring six iconic acts over three nights.

Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones played on Friday night, Neil Young and Paul McCartney on Saturday and Sunday night was The Who and Roger Waters.

The Who played a 22 song set with no surprises but a whole lot of classic hits. The centrepiece of the show was a cluster of rock operas with Quadrophenia then Tommy receiving showcase treatment.

Desert Trip will be repeated with the same six acts next Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
