Your Ultimate Guide to Selecting the Best Oahu Dinner Cruise

Jason

The Hawaiian island of Oahu offers a variety of boat tours for visitors, including the ever-popular dinner cruises. Oahu dinner cruises depart in the evening to watch a beautiful Hawaiian sunset and enjoy a delicious dinner, all from aboard a comfortable cruise ship or catamaran.

But with so many options, it can be hard to decide which dinner cruise you’d like to go on. Do you want a family-friendly cruise when you’re traveling with children or a romantic sunset dinner experience for you and your special someone? Maybe you’re traveling with friends (or solo) and are looking for a more relaxed, casual cruise to meet people in a social atmosphere.

Whatever the case may be, read on to find the perfect Oahu dinner cruise near you in our list of the top dinner cruises on Oahu!

Top Oahu Sunset Dinner Cruises

Oahu’s most popular sunset dinner cruise: the star of honolulu.

cruise-ship

It’s no wonder that the Star of Honolulu is the most popular dinner cruise on Oahu. Operating since 1992, this cruise vessel boasts a capacity of 1,500 passengers, featuring four separate decks that offer different experiences. The largest boat that calls Oahu home, the Star of Honolulu offers excellent service from start to finish. It’s also the only fully-ADA accessible cruise on the island, making it the best wheelchair-accessible sunset dinner cruise in Oahu.

Choose from the casual Pacific Star to the elegant Five Star dinner, and enjoy a delicious dinner served hot, right on board. At sunset, take a stroll along the outer decks of the boat to watch the sun sink below the horizon and see the Waikiki skyline be covered in a warm glow.

Pacific Star Buffet Dinner

Located on the lowest deck, the Pacific Star offers a fun and relaxed atmosphere on the cruise ship. Enjoy a buffet dinner featuring a roast beef carving station while watching a colorful Polynesian show as you eat.

Casual Star Sunset Dinner

A step above the Pacific star, the Star Dinner offers a casual dinner cruise with the Star’s signature “60 Years of Aloha” show. For a limited time, you can also enjoy all-you-can-eat crab legs! Don’t miss this special deal on the Star of Honolulu!

Deluxe Three Star Dinner

Treat yourself to a sumptuous steak and lobster dinner as part of a 5-course dining experience that includes premium beverages. This is the most popular package on the Star of Honolulu, and is perfect for couples celebrating a honeymoon or anniversary looking for a relaxed evening at sea.

Elegant Five Star Dinner

Located on the exclusive top deck and featuring an extensive seven-course menu, the Five Star dinner boasts air-flown live Maine lobster and three super-premium beverages. Personal tables for two make this the superior choice for couples, and has both an age restriction and a dress code: cocktail attire for women, and collared shirts for men (formal evening attire encouraged), children under 12 not allowed. Your entertainment for the night is a live jazz trio, playing soothing melodies to set a romantic mood.

Oahu’s Most Romantic Dinner Cruise: The Majestic by Atlantis Adventures

oahu-dinner-cruise-atlantis

The sleek Majestic cruise ship offers a modern, luxurious cruise experience in a relaxed atmosphere that sets up the perfect romantic evening for couples on holiday. The boat features two air-conditioned decks with large windows for panoramic views, as well as an open-air top deck where you can feel the ocean breeze.

While the Majestic’s sunset dinner cruise creates a luxurious atmosphere, the cruise experience itself is quite relaxed. The Majestic features open seating, so you can freely move around the vessel. A hula dancer and small live band playing music in the background provides your entertainment for the evening. Special mention goes to their lounge-type seating – they have couches!

If you’d like to spend a quiet evening at sea with your loved one, especially if you’re on honeymoon or celebrating an anniversary, the Majestic offers an extraordinary experience .

Oahu’s Most Affordable Dinner Cruise: The Prince Kuhio Cruise

Prince-Kuhio

Prince Kuhio’s dinner cruise offers a casual sunset dinner cruise on a mid-sized passenger boat. This affordable sunset dinner experience is great for families, groups of friends, or anyone else who just wants to enjoy a no-frills evening on the ocean.

This cruise offers a steak and shrimp dinner with roast vegetables, as well as a welcome Mai Tai and live entertainers, including a hula dancer and a fire show. A cash bar is also available.

The biggest feature of the Prince Kuhio is it’s low price: it’s the most affordable sunset dinner cruise in Oahu! For one low price, you get a sunset cruise, dinner, a welcome drink, and on-board entertainment. So if you’re looking for a cheap way to get out on the water, Prince Kuhio’s sunset dinner is the choice for you .

Oahu’s Best Casual Dinner Cruise: Makani Catamaran

Makani-Catamaran

The first catamaran on this list, the Makani catamaran offers dinner and cocktails on this double-hulled sailing vessel. Smaller than the cruise ships listed earlier, this catamaran gives you a fantastic open air deck from which to enjoy panoramic views of Waikiki.

The dinner menu includes a buffet of hot and cold dishes as well as one complimentary alcoholic drink. A full cash bar is also on board, with reasonably priced drinks available.

As a catamaran sail, this dinner cruise option is stable and comfortable due to the double hull design of the vessel. The low-riding design also puts you closer to the surface of the water, making you really feel like you’re on the ocean. And using wind power to operate, this cruise is more eco-friendly than larger motorized boats. As far as casual sunset dinner cruises go, you can’t beat the Makani catamaran .

Oahu’s Top Pick for Fireworks Dinner Cruise: Spirit of Aloha

Spirit-of-Aloha

Another sailing catamaran, the Spirit of Aloha departs from the Hilton Hawaiian Village’s own pier, which is also the place where the Hilton hosts their weekly fireworks show! Every Friday night in Waikiki, an aerial fireworks show is held by the Hilton, right on the beach by their resort. Waikiki’s crowds get even more thick on Friday nights for this reason, which make fireworks cruises an attractive option for anyone who wants front row seats to see the sky show.

For front row seats, what better way than to depart right from Hilton’s own pier? On the Spirit of Aloha, you’ll be able to sail out for a beautiful sunset, enjoy you’r dinner cruise, and head back to the Hilton where you can enjoy the aerial show from a Friday night fireworks cruise before heading back to the pier.

The Spirit of Aloha catamaran cruise also includes a buffet dinner and two alcoholic drinks, making it a great choice for couples, families, or anyone who wants to experience a fireworks cruise in Waikiki.

Oahu’s Best Social Dinner Cruise: Ocean & You

Ocean-&-You

A newer option among dinner cruises in Waikiki, the Ocean & You sunset dinner cruise takes place on a small boat with an intimate social atmosphere. With live music and a menu prepared by Chef Elmer Guzman, this cruise is the perfect night out with friends, or the perfect way to make new friends!

The unique dinner menu consists of multiple courses, served over the course of the night. Each one has been hand picked by the award-winning Chef Elmer, using locally-sourced ingredients and prepared in the island fusion style that Oahu is famous for.

Much like the company’s dolphin snorkel, “Dolphins & You,” the Ocean & You cruise includes live entertainment in the form of music and hula dancing. The boat also features wraparound seating, a surround sound system, and mood lighting. All this and more helps to make a fun night with friends even more memorable on the Ocean & You dinner cruise .

Oahu’s Top Pick for Dinner Cruises in Ko Olina: Ocean Joy Cruises

Ko-Olina

The outlier on the list, Ocean Joy Cruises isn’t located in Waikiki like the other entries. Instead, they depart from the Ko Olina Marina, located on the west side of the island where Ko Olina resorts such as the Four Seasons and Disney Aulani are located.

Making it even more unique, this sunset dinner cruise features snorkeling! The pristine waters of Ko Olina are home to colorful coral reefs, green sea turtles, and wild spinner dolphins, which you’ll be lucky to spot on your afternoon snorkel. All snorkeling equipment and instruction is provided, as well as flotation devices for those who aren’t so confident in the water.

After your snorkeling tour in Ko Olina, you’ll relax on board watching the sunset and enjoying a drink from the bar as dinner is served. Enjoy a local-style plate of island cuisine while taking in sights of the west coast of Oahu on one of the few sunset cruises in the area. Cruise, eat, and snorkel with Ocean Joy’s Ko Olina sunset cruise .

Frequently Asked Questions About Oahu Dinner Cruises

As popular as sunset dinner cruises are in Oahu, there are many questions people have about them. It can be tough to know exactly what you’re in for, especially if you’ve never been on a dinner cruise before. We’ve put together some of the most frequently asked questions we get from customers in order to hopefully answer your questions and make you more confident in booking an Oahu dinner cruise!

Q: What do I wear to a dinner cruise in Hawaii?

A: Aloha attire or smart casual, unless otherwise specified.

Hawaii’s fashion trends to be a lot less formal than other places, reflecting the laid-back culture of the islands. It’s also just not practical to wear a three-piece suit when it’s 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Most dinner cruises are the same, having no dress code at all. For a booze cruise and many catamaran cruises, you could probably wear whatever you want.

Larger cruises like the Star of Honolulu, however, do enforce a dress code for higher-end cruise experiences, such as the Five Star dinner. Featuring a live jazz band and seven courses including live-flown Maine lobster and USDA Prime tenderloin, the Star of Honolulu encourages cocktail attire for their Five Star dinner and prohibits shorts, t-shirts, or slippers from being worn on the top deck.

An appropriate outfit for women could be a cocktail dress with heels, though you could dress down to resort- or summer-styles, as you are in Hawaii, after all. For men, a collared shirt is required, with a coat, dress slacks, and dress shoes highly encouraged.

Whatever the dress code, we recommend bringing a light jacket on your dinner cruise, as it may get chilly after sunset.

dinner cruise in oahu hawaii

Q: Do I have to tip on a dinner cruise? Should I tip the captain/crew of the boat?

A: Tipping is always welcome, but never expected.

Workers on boats are generally paid in wages, so tips aren’t an expectation for them in the same way it would be for most waitstaff in the United States. However, keep in mind that tips aren’t usually included in the cost of your sunset dinner cruise. Giving a small tip won’t hurt, and it would be highly appreciated by your captain, crew, waitstaff, or bartender!

Q: Does the type of boat matter? What’s the difference between a catamaran and a cruise ship?

A: The type of boat you’re on can make a big difference in your cruise experience.

Most cruise ships are fairly large, holding hundreds of people on multiple decks. This can often make it feel like you’re in a floating restaurant, and people who get seasick or motion sick often report not feeling as queasy on larger vessels.

Catamarans, the most popular type of boat in Waikiki, are generally smaller, usually holding around 50 passengers, depending on the size. Their double-hull design allows them to be much closer to the surface of the water while still remaining stable. They have a deck and a often a cabin space where you can sit. However, the smaller vessels are more susceptible to the motions of the ocean, making it a risky choice for people who get seasick.

Star-of-Honolulu

Q: Do I need to make reservations for a dinner cruise?

A: Yes, most dinner cruises require advance booking. Due to their popularity, they may be sold out if you try to book at the last minute.

We highly recommend booking your Oahu dinner cruise in advance in order to secure your spot. It’s also recommended to plan your dinner cruise earlier in your vacation, just in case you can rebook it to a later date if necessary.

Q: Are there sunset cruises that don’t include dinner?

A: Yes! You can book a sunset cocktail cruise in Waikiki before getting dinner at one of Oahu’s amazing restaurants.

Sunset cocktail cruises are one of the most popular things to do in Waikiki. They are much like sunset dinner cruises, but include free drinks rather than a meal. Booking a sunset cocktail cruise is a great way to kick off your night in Waikiki.

Q: What’s the difference between a dinner cruise and a cocktail cruise?

A: Dinner cruises include a meal and are a little longer in duration, whereas cocktail cruises are shorter and only include drinks.

Dinner cruises offer a convenient all-in-one package of beautiful sunset, relaxing cruise, and delicious dinner, which makes them a must-do activity for anyone visiting Oahu. Cocktail sails, also known affectionately as booze cruises, don’t include dinner, but include a few free drinks, with some even hosting open bars. Generally, cocktail cruises are cheaper in cost and more laid-back (due to the cocktails), but you get a lot less in terms of your experience.

In short, if you want a fun happy hour experience and just like being on the water, book a cocktail cruise. If you want all that and dinner, too, you should definitely book a sunset dinner cruise!

dinner cruise in oahu hawaii

Q: Should I book a dinner cruise if I get seasick?

A: It depends on how severe your seasickness is, among other factors.

The waters around Waikiki are fairly calm, so most cases of seasickness can be taken care of with Dramamine or ginger pills. If getting seasick is something you’re worried about, we would recommend looking at larger boats like the Star of Honolulu, or the Majestic, In addition, the double-hull design of catamarans tend to help mitigate seasickness, as they are more stable and move more predictably than the “rolling” motion of single-hull ships.

When taking a motion sickness preventative such as Dramamine, remember to take it an hour before stepping on board the cruise ship. If you’re really worried about seasickness, take an extra dose the night prior. Our lawyers require us to tell you that we are not actual doctors and can’t give sound medical advice. As in all situations, use your own discretion based on what you know about yourself.

This is the best Oahu sunset cruise for anybody who enjoys live music and beautiful scenery while they eat.

Choose between standing out on the deck and feeling the ocean breeze in your hair or retiring to the cocktail lounge to admire Oahu’s beautiful shoreline through expansive windows.

You’ll be served Asian and Polynesian influenced appetizers. Feast on a delicious steak and crab dinner along with fresh local tropical fruits on skewers.

While you eat, you can appreciate the views of Waikiki Beach, the magnificent volcanic cone of Diamond Head, and Oahu’s southern shoreline.

While eating, you can listen to live music performed by accomplished local musicians. You also have the opportunity to chat with your fellow passengers and make new friends.

But the highlight of your evening will be the sublime sunset over the Pacific Ocean.

As the sun sets below the horizon, watch out for the legendary green flash across the ocean waves. This is a meteorological phenomenon where part of the sun changes color at sunset or sunrise.

This effect is due to the refraction of sunlight that is most significant at the angle where the sun “hits” the water.

Since there’s nothing to cause an early sunset, like a hill or buildings on the land, the green flash is most common across oceans where the angles are best and visibility is clear over a long distance.

Oahu Travel Guide

Although Hawaii has been a US State since 1959, it still feels like another country. Oahu is the most popular of the Hawaiian islands, hosting many of its iconic attractions.

Where else in the US can you visit not just one but two genuine royal palaces?

Whether you’re most fascinated by volcanic features like Diamond Head, the abundance of marine life in the surrounding ocean, or local traditions like lei greetings and luaus, you’ll find something amazing to see and do in Oahu.

Airports & Entry

For most visitors, the only practical means to get to Oahu is by air. There are no ferries from the continental US to Hawaii.

However, you can opt to join a cruise to Hawaii from Vancouver, San Francisco, or Los Angeles.

Hawaii’s main airport is Honolulu International Airport in Oahu, which is also known as Daniel K. Inouye International Airport.

Most visitors to Hawaii arrive here, and the airport handles over 21 million passengers a year. By air, you can reach Oahu from almost anywhere in the world.

If you compare the price of flights on a ticket site like Skyscanner , you’ll find one-way flights from LA for as little as $232, from NYC for $367, and from London for $484.

As one of the 30 busiest airports in the US, Honolulu offers all the facilities you’d expect inside a large airport.

International flights land at Terminal 2, which is the main terminal sometimes referred to as the Overseas Terminal.

You’ll find most of the food outlets, stores, and other services in Terminal 2. All 3 terminals of the airport are linked by the Wiki-Wiki shuttle bus service.

You can reach central Honolulu or Waikiki from the airport by shuttle bus, public bus, taxi, or hire car. Some hotels offer a free shuttle bus service.

Shuttles are the easiest economical option, costing around $16 one way. The public buses are cheaper, but they’re slow and don’t allow luggage. Taxis usually charge between $40 and $45.

Cruises from the continental US depart from Los Angeles and San Francisco , and Canadian cruises depart from Vancouver.

The shortest duration of such a tour is 11 days from Vancouver, but that would involve 5 days at sea and 5 in port.

A 14-day cruise from LA consists of 9 days at sea and 4 in port. If you want to reach Oahu by cruise liner, you’ll sacrifice half your vacation to just getting there.

But the biggest disadvantage of taking a cruise over flying is that a cruise will typically only spend one day in each port.

You won’t have enough time to adequately explore Oahu or any other Hawaiian island.

Planning Tips

Oahu is arguably the most interesting of the Hawaiian Islands to visit, boasting many of the top attractions in the state. Here are 5 tips to help you plan your visit.

Tip #1: If you love whales, go in winter

Every winter, humpback whales migrate from Alaska to the waters around Hawaii to mate and calve.

If you want to see whales breaching the surface, come to Oahu and go on a whale watching tour between December and April.

Between 10 and 12 thousand whales gather in the nearby ocean. You can often see them from the beaches, and they are known to circle small boats that approach their pods.

If you’re not interested in whales, the best time to visit Oahu is between September and November.

There are fewer crowds in the shoulder season, and accommodation prices can be cheaper. The fall isn’t as hot as summer but not as busy as winter.

Tip #2: Explore beyond Honolulu and Waikiki Beach

Many visitors to Oahu don’t travel far from their hotel in Honolulu, but many of the island’s more interesting attractions are further afield.

During your stay, make sure you explore some of the more unusual and remote attractions Oahu has to offer. A great to check some areas few people see is by taking an ATV tour .

Tip #3: Book Oahu accommodation and tours in advance, especially during winter

Oahu is a popular destination, so accommodation and tours are sometimes fully booked well months ahead.

To ensure you get the room you want and tickets for the tours you’re interested in, book in advance.

Tip #4: Pack smart clothes and raincoats

Because Oahu has a tropical climate, you’ll spend a lot of time in shorts and T-shirts. However, occasional heavy rainstorms do occur, especially during the summer months.

For that reason, you might want to pack a light raincoat.

And, if you plan to attend any special events in the evenings, such as a traditional luau, or you want to visit a plush cocktail lounge for a romantic evening, then ensure you pack some more formal clothes for such occasions.

Tip #5: Buy traditional local craft souvenirs

You’ll see “authentic Hawaiian crafts” in gift shops around the island, but many of the carvings and traditional clothes are actually “made in China”.

However, there are several arts and crafts stores around the island that specialize in locally produced goods.

For example, check out Na Mea Hawaii , 1200 Ala Moana Boulevard, Honolulu.

Na Mea Hawaii is a store where you can buy books written by and about Hawaiian people, original art, crafts, and cultural products.

Restaurants & Eating Out

Oahu is an island where the indigenous Polynesian inhabitants boast an uninterrupted cultural history. This means it’s a great place to sample authentic Polynesian food.

But the vast numbers of immigrants who have settled here from Asia, Puerto Rico, and Mexico add to the rich cultural mix.

Oahu is also a great place to eat traditional Korean, Japanese, and Mexican dishes.

Because it’s an island, you’ll find lots of seafood dishes in Oahu. Poke is a popular traditional delicacy. Poke is similar to sashimi but the fish is presented in chunks instead of slices.

Monchong is marinated and grilled, deep-water fish. And opakapaka is baked, grilled, or steamed crimson snapper.

If you want to sample traditional poke, check out the Highway Inn in Waipahu. This renowned, award-winning restaurant has served authentic Hawaiian food since 1947.

The Highway Inn also has branches in Kaka’ako and inside the Bishop Museum in Honolulu.

A popular Polynesian cooking technique is using an earth oven called an imu. Any dishes cooked this way are described as luau.

Luau parties are actually named after this kind of food because it is often served at Hawaiian parties.

A popular luau dish is laulau, which features fish, chicken, or pork wrapped in taro leaves.

These wraps are slow-cooked for hours until the meat grows tender. The resulting delicacy has a smoky taste.

For hand-wrapped laulau, again head over to the Highway Inn in Waipahu. While there, also check out the smoked meat loco moco with mushrooms over brown rice. Delicious!

In Oahu, taro is the staple food source. This versatile root crop is often found crushed down into poi, a steamed or baked paste.

Poi is thick and tastes a little sour because of the fermentation that occurs during preparation.

For the best hand-pounded poi, check out the Waiahole Poi Factory on the Kamehameha Highway north of Kahaluu.

Here you can not only eat delicious poi in their restaurant, but you can also attend Hawaiian traditional food demonstrations and tastings. You can also enjoy laulau here.

Honolulu Kitchen in Waipahu, despite its name, is a great place to taste traditional Asian dishes, such as Sichuan pork eggplant, furikake garlic chicken, and kung pao chicken.

Manapua (cha shao bao) are popular all over the island, and Honolulu Kitchen serves a broad variety from spicy, deep-fried Korean style to traditional steamed manapua.

If you enjoy Korean dishes, Sara’s Café (Jun Café) on Beretania Street in Honolulu is popular with the locals. It has a reputation for good-quality, affordable Korean meals.

But if it’s authentic sushi you desire, check out Sushi Sasabune on South King Street in Honolulu. It’s highly rated on both TripAdvisor and Google.

Kulolo is a traditional pudding made from steamed taro, sugar, and coconut milk. You won’t be surprised to hear that you can taste it at the Highway Inn .

Breadfruit is often eaten as a dessert, served steamed, baked, deep-fried, or boiled.

You’ll also love Haupia, a delicious pudding made from coconuts. You can sample haupia, fresh apple bananas, pineapples, and kulolo at Haili’s Hawaiian Food in Honolulu.

Nightlife & Entertainment

Nightlife on Oahu is focused around Honolulu and Waikiki. Typically, the night doesn’t get started until sunset.

With so many tourists here ready to have a good time, Hawaii’s capital is blessed with lots of great bars.

Check out Buho Cantina , a swanky rooftop bar and Mexican restaurant in the Waikiki Shopping Plaza that features panoramic views of Waikiki.

It’s a great place to watch the sunset and start the night. Or if you’re looking for something more upscale, head over to the Halekulani Hotel.

Inside, you’ll find Lewers Lounge , where you can sip cocktails in a plush environment while listening to live jazz.

This is one of those places where they won’t let you in wearing flip-flops and T-shirts.

If you’re looking for a lively nightclub where you can dance to live music and enjoy a relaxed atmosphere, you’ll love The Republic .

This popular club is centrally located opposite the famous Ala Moana Shopping Center. They feature regular concerts and special events.

Nearby is the more upmarket The District . You must be 23 to get inside. They feature a broad dance floor, a VIP section, 3 bars, and live DJs.

Alternatively, check out Addiction Nightclub inside the Modern Honolulu Hotel. Addiction features a stunning light show, with 40,000 lights to light up your dance moves.

Luau and hula hoops

While you’re in Hawaii, it would be a shame not to experience some of the traditional evening entertainments.

You can enjoy a FREE traditional torch lighting, Hawaiian hula show, and blowing of the conch shell at around sunset on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

Go to the Kuhio Beach Hula Mound near the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Hotel.

The show starts at 6 pm November through January, 6:30 pm February through October, and lasts for an hour.

If you want a fun-packed evening of laulau food, drinks, traditional songs, and epic stories, go to a traditional luau.

At a luau, you can experience a lei greeting and eat traditional cuisine cooked in an imu while watching indigenous performers perform traditional acts.

At the best luaus, you’ll see locals dressed in authentic Hawaiian clothing and performing Ha: Breath of Life , one of the most famous traditional epic sagas.

There might even be brave fire-knife dancers and fire walkers. Just don’t stand too close.

There are several venues where you can enjoy a luau, such as the Germaines Luau and the Paradise Cove Luau .

If you love adventure, especially adventure outdoors, Oahu is your place! Whether it’s an parasailing adventure , a zipline adventure tour or a horse back riding tour , Oahu has something for everyone! If you have the extra money, a doors off helicopter tour of Oahu Island is an unforgettable experience.

Getting Around

If you’re staying around Waikiki, many great attractions, bars, entertainment venues, and restaurants are within easy walking distance.

However, if you’re staying elsewhere on the island, or want to explore the island, you probably ought to hire a car.

The major urban area around Honolulu and Waikiki features pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods. You’ll also want to explore the beaches in this area on foot.

When walking any great distance, remember to take a light raincoat. Rain showers are always a possibility, especially during summer.

Cycling is a great, eco-friendly way to cover longer distances. It’s faster than walking but still provides you with the freedom to stop wherever you want and explore.

Bicycles and mopeds are easy to hire around the island.

However, if you’re headed anywhere hilly, or you want to visit other towns, you must make sure everyone in your group is fit enough to go the distance.

Hotel shuttles

Many of the larger resorts and hotels provide shuttles to help you reach the beach and major attractions around the island. These are often complimentary.

However, some hotels charge for their shuttle services, and often those services are limited. Before you set off for the day, ensure you know what your hotel shuttle is going to cost and the timetable.

The public bus service in Oahu is literally called The Bus.

There are mixed opinions about The Bus, with some travelers finding the service great for getting around the island, but others complaining about crowding and slow services.

The Bus does provide 93 routes around the island with an astounding 4,200 stops. You can go anywhere on The Bus!

You pay cash on the bus or purchase a bus pass. You can buy a 1-day pass on the bus for $5.50.

When traveling, keep an eye out for your destination. To stop The Bus, you must pull the cord in advance.

For information about ticket prices, concessions, maps, and schedules, visit The Bus website .

Waikiki also has a trolleybus service with stops along Waikiki Beach. Trolleybuses are great fun for short journeys in the immediate area but useless for really exploring the whole island.

If you want the freedom to travel anywhere whenever you want, you can always hire a car. It’s a lot more expensive than purchasing a 1-day bus pass, but you will get places quicker.

You can easily hire a car at the airport, though some rental companies require drivers to be over 25.

However, note that parking in Honolulu and Waikiki is difficult.

Traffic all around the island gets congested during the busy winter months. And speed limits are lower than in the continental US and strictly enforced.

Because of the problems with parking, congestion, and navigation, you’ll find it easiest to explore the island on a tour where the tour operator provides the transport.

You won’t have the same flexibility as when you rent a car, but you’ll get where you need to go with less hassle.

Taxis and Uber

Taxis in Oahu can be expensive, and they’re difficult to find outside of the main urban area. Hailing taxis isn’t common practice in Hawaii.

However, Uber and Lyft can often offer more affordable solutions to your travel problems.

Accommodations

Most accommodations for tourists in Oahu are found in Waikiki. But you can also find a range of accommodations in Leeward Waianae, along North Shore, and Windward East.

Premier hotel brands, such as Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott, and Sheraton, are found around Waikiki.

Business-class hotels are clustered around the downtown and airport areas of Honolulu.

Prince Waikiki is the top-rated hotel in Honolulu on TripAdvisor and is also highly rated on Booking.com and Google.

Prince Waikiki is a modern and stylish luxury hotel with an infinity pool, wall-to-ceiling windows, and a popular rooftop bar.

If you’re working to a tight budget, you can also find cheaper hotels in this area.

The Inn On The Park in Waikiki offers low rates and free parking, which is useful if you intend to rent a car.

And the Ambassador Hotel is also affordable, though it does have relatively low ratings on both Google and TripAdvisor.

Leeward Waianae

The Makana Valley area contains a luxury resort, championship golf course, and a few vacation rentals.

The Hawaiian Princess Resort is highly rated and offers great surfing conditions in a much quieter setting than Waikiki.

North Shore

This area mainly offers B&Bs and vacation homes, though there is a major resort at Turtle Bay.

The Turtle Bay Resort is situated in a stunning location on a peninsula overlooking the bay. If you love snorkeling and turtles, it’s a great place to stay.

Windward East

This is a residential area, and the accommodations in this area are mainly vacation homes.

The weather in Oahu doesn’t fluctuate much over the year. There are really only two seasons: winter and summer. Most of the rain falls during the summer.

And there is only around an hour’s difference in sunrise and sunset times between midsummer and midwinter.

Generally, the leeward (west) side of the island is drier than the windward (east) side. This is why the eastern coast is greener than the west.

The hurricane season is from June to November, though bad hurricanes are rare.

The coldest winter month is February, with an average daily high of 78 0 F and a low of 63 0 F. By May, temperatures have risen to an average high of 81 0 F and low of 67 0 F.

August is the hottest month of the summer, with an average high of 85 0 F and a low of 71 0 F. By November, the average high drops to 81 0 F and the low to 68 0 F.

Attractions

Oahu boasts many iconic attractions that make it the most visited of the Hawaiian Islands.

Royal Palaces

Honolulu boasts 2 authentic royal palaces!

The more sumptuous of the 2 is the Iolani Palace . It was built in 1882 for King Kalakaua and became the official residence of the Hawaiian Royal Family.

In recent years, the palace has been lovingly restored. Docent-led tours of the grand halls and opulent rooms are available.

Queen Emma Summer Palace (Hanaiakamalama) was built as a summer retreat in 1857.

This house is a museum filled with displays of the personal possessions of Queen Emma, her husband King Kamehameha, and their son Prince Albert Edward.

You can enjoy a self-guided or docent-guided tour of this royal residence.

Pearl Harbor

While you’re in Oahu, it’s only polite to pay your respects to the servicemen who lost their lives to defend your freedom here during WWII. The Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor draws 1.8 million visitors each year.

The USS Missouri (WWII battleship) and USS Bowfin (WWII submarine) are permanently anchored in the harbor.

You can explore these nautical relics and learn about sailors’ lives during the war. You can also visit the Pacific Aviation Museum.

Diamond Head

You can’t not notice Diamond Head while you’re strolling along Waikiki Beach. The Diamond Head Trail is a great way to explore the volcanic cone that dominates the Honolulu skyline.

Although there are some steep sections, and it looks daunting, the hike to the summit is easier than it looks. It only takes between 40 to 60 minutes for the average hiker.

From the top, you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Waikiki and the Pacific Ocean.

Waimea Falls

This waterfall at the back of the Waimea Valley is relatively easy to reach. The 15-feet waterfall is surrounded by botanical gardens, and you’re allowed to swim in its plunge pool.

The Waimea Falls trail is only ¾ miles long. Your whole family can follow the paved path that passes important archaeological sites to reach the waterfall.

And if your walk leaves you hungry, you can find the Na Mea Ono Snack Bar at the visitors center.

Waikiki Aquarium

Your whole family will love the Waikiki Aquarium. Inside you’ll find 3,500 species of marine life native to Hawaii, including crabs, jellyfish, sea horses, octopus, squid, sharks, and seals.

You’ll find the aquarium across from Kapiolani Park near San Souci Beach. It’s a great place to see all of Hawaii’s marine life in one place.

Polynesian Cultural Center

This is a great attraction for anyone fascinated by Hawaiian culture.

The center demonstrates traditional music, dances, food, and other traditions. But it’s not only limited to Hawaiian culture.

The center features 7 separate villages each representing a different region of the South Pacific. You can learn about all Polynesian cultures at the Polynesian Cultural Center .

It kicks off at 5:30 pm and goes until 7:30 pm almost every day.

One great thing about this cruise is the complimentary transportation from select hotels in Waikiki. So, if you have a few too many cocktails, you’ll be in good hands (check beforehand to see if your hotel is included).

With this cruise,  you get volumes of open space to enjoy the Hawaiian sun, gorgeous views of Waikiki’s coastline, Honolulu’s skyline and lights, as well as the stunning Oahu sunset . The sun sets at about 7:30 pm around mid-year, so make sure to get a comfortable seat or soak it in on the trampoline nets out back.

Alternatively, you can roam around the Makani Catamaran’s deck. From there you’ll be able to  take in the expansive scenery of Koko Head, Diamond Head and Koko Crater . As with the other cruises, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to snap some picturesque photos on these tours, so don’t forget your camera.

All of that paired with a five star steak dinner and an Oahu sunset never looked better!

Overall, the Honolulu City Lights Sunset Cruise is a great option if you’re the type that likes to bring the party, or spend some alone time with a loved one.

  • Frequent Sightings of Turtles & Dolphins – Oahu’s finest
  • Free five star transportation
  • 1 Complimentary Drink
  • Trampoline nets out back to relax
  • Smallest cruise in our selection

Entertainment

When we look at the entertainment value of each cruise, all three offer lively activity and room to enjoy your friends’ company. But, there’s also private lounges if you prefer a more private experience with a loved one, close friends, business partners or colleagues.

Another feature that all three cruises offer is a special  Friday night sunset plus Fireworks tour . It is a Friday-night-only festivity, so if you want to add a little bit more to your experience, make sure to book it then. The fireworks light the sky courtesy of Waikiki’s Hilton Hawaiian Village.

A 3 course dinner makes for a romantic evening and adds up to being one of the best tours and activities for couples when visiting the island of Hawaii.

Whatever occasion you’d like to celebrate, all three allow guests to indulge in a little partying. So, if you’re thinking birthday parties, weddings, promotion celebration, or what have you, they allow it.

each dinner cruise offers a free drink to get the party started

Thanks to its spectacular size, the Star of Honolulu cruise ship obviously tops out as the cruise with the most bang for your buck, for anyone wanting to enjoy a wide range of cruising delights. Their Friday fireworks and  sunset dinner cruises  extend an extra hour, plus you can catch all the firework over the ocean action from the deck for an extra $10. Now that’s some hospitality; Hawaii style!

Call us now to book your Oahu Dinner Cruise.

The  Star Sunset Dinner Cruise  has a classic show currently showing. They call it  60 Years of Aloha . Essentially, it is a story about a young couple who continue to embark on their long (and seemingly illustrious) journey together through the deep blue Pacific. It is a colorful spectacle, the largest and most elaborate of the three cruises reviewed. Along with that, they also have a fun welcome ceremony they call the Welcome Hula on the pier-side of the ship.

The  Island Style Buffet Cruise  and  Honolulu City Lights Sunset Dinner Cruise  also have a variety of live shows, entertaining audience participation, live Hawaiian music, and a number of other live shows that go on until sundown ensuring you’ll have fun. Check out their cruise cards to find out what they have lined up for you. Or, maybe you’ll let them surprise you!

Also, since all three cruise options operate around the same route, all of them offer Turtle sightings and a chance to cruise alongside dolphins.

Also, if you’re lucky and go during the right time, you’ll have the opportunity to see herds of Humpback whales. They swim into the warm waters of Hawaii from chilly Alaska to breed and calve. This is a seasonal festivity, but you can arrange to catch it between mid-December to around mid-April.

Food and Beverages Available on the Oahu Dinner Cruises

It is not a dinner cruise without the food now is it? Rest assured there is a lot going on for foodies and everyone who loves a good drink or two.

You’ll encounter  a rich mixture of island cuisine  (delicious and nutritious seafood and Hawaiian drinks that make for a perfect dinner) on all the cruises, similar to an  Oahu luau . That includes hot and cold selections as well as both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages to choose from.

Interestingly, though, they also allow you to come with your own drink and some food on the Catamaran (Honolulu City Lights Sunset Dinner Cruise), provided you clean up after yourself. This is a little known fact since they don’t publicly advertise it. However, the menu has a number of gluten-free and vegetarian plates aboard, too. If you’re looking for a truly delicious meal, we must say the  Island Style Buffet Cruise’s menu  is by far the richest and yummiest of the trio—with options like Garlic Shiitake Teriyaki Chicken, the Pacific Catch of the Day, and a unique Chef’s Selection for dessert, this buffet just can’t be beat. On top of that, they also include one complimentary drink.

But, if you love yourself some crispy crabs and juicy beef, the Star Sunset Dinner Cruise and Show has a whole serving of those. They’ve christened it the “ all-you-can-eat-crab and tenderloin of beef ” buffet dinner.

We do advise that you find yourself a good seat that is not too far off from the main dining areas. Although there is plenty of crab to go around, if you love crab like I do you’ll want to sit close so you can enjoy all-you-can-eat crab.

The great thing about all three is that there is so much to choose from with each Oahu dinner operator, and you’ll find you need a couple of minutes just to decide on what you want to have.

One thing is for sure though, the  Mai Tai  is one popular drink around these shores, so expect it on all three dinner cruises.

About their Cancellation Policies

Looking at the three cruises, they all have similar cancellation requirements that they’ll let you know up front. If for any reason they cancel your cruise, they expressly state that they can (and will)  refund your money 100% . But, if you have to cancel your trip, you have to  alert them 24 hours prior  to the time you are required to check-in. If cancellations are made within this time or in the case of no shows,  they keep the full amount . No partial refunds for you.

(Check for additional information on Aloha Tower, Kewalo Basin Harbor, Hawaii, and Waikiki)

Bottom Line

These are the  top Oahu dinner cruises  for good reason, and all have unique traits that makes them special and resonate with what it means to have the best Hawaiian experience you can imagine (not your normal tour). They all offer a sunset dining experience with lots of food and drinks to choose from. The entertainment offerings are on point and the crew members friendly (and they know how to get the party started!).

But, they also offer slightly different packages in-between, so you’ll need to consider what works best for your distinct taste and cruising needs. That is the surefire way to enjoy the best Oahu dining cruise experience around.

Star of Honolulu Dinner Cruise

What's included, description, hawaii's only luau at sea.

An evening dinner cruise on the  Star of Honolulu  is like three excursions in one: a scenic boat tour along Oahu’s coastline, a delicious five course meal, and live Hawaiian entertainment – all wrapped up in one easy, convenient package.

The  Star of Honolulu  sets sail from the heart of downtown Honolulu, conveniently located just four miles from Waikiki. The ship docks at Pier 8, right next to the Aloha Tower , which makes it easy to find and access. The cruise operates seven nights a week, year-round, although like most excursions in Hawaii it is beholden to our (usually) pleasant weather.

Upgrade to our most popular Celebration Package during the checkout process to guarantee a private window-side table along with a keepsake photo.

The Star of Honolulu

The Star of Honolulu cruise ship at sea with Diamond Head crater in the background.

The five-course meal consists of an appetizer course (cheese and tropical fruit plate), salad (locally grown salad greens with a house made dressing),  a seafood course (a whole Maine lobster served in the shell), the main course (Tenderloin steak served with mashed potatoes and vegetables), and then dessert (cake served with Kona coffee). This is a full-service dining experience, you will be served at your table, so no waiting in a buffet line at this luau!

A 5-course meal is plated with steak, lobster, salad, cheese, fruit and dessert.

This deluxe dining package also includes two premium drinks. The  Star  bar offers a number of frozen tropical drinks and specialty cocktails, as well as a limited variety of beer, wine, and spirits.

For the evening’s main entertainment, the  Star’s  cast of performers will present “65 years of Aloha” which is a tribute to the sixty-five years that the dinner cruise has been in operation. This is an original luau show, complete with music, costumes, and choreography, all performed right in your dining cabin.

Luau dancers pose is costumes with bright yellow feathers and large headdresses.

Friday sailings are the most popular due to the fireworks and fill up fast

Dress code is resort casual. Shorts are allowed, but tank tops, swimwear, and flip flops are not.

Groups larger than 8 will be seated at tables next to each other.

A government issued photo I.D. is required to consume or purchase alcohol.

Getting There

The easiest and most convenient way to get to the ship is by using the Star’s own shuttle bus. They will pick you up right at your hotel, plus you will not have to worry about parking, missing the boat, or having too many Mai-tais. The cost is $19 per person, round trip, and this can easily be added to your reservation during the check-out process.

If you would prefer to drive yourself to the harbor the closest public parking lots are located near Piers 5 and 6. Parking currently costs $6 per hour, and you will need three hours at the very minimum (4:45pm – 7:45pm).

Taxis and rideshares are also an option. Prices will vary with demand, but an Uber or Lyft will cost you about $15-$25 each way.

Finally, public transportation is the cheapest option ($5.50 for a day pass) but be aware that the nearest bus stop will require an additional 10 to 15-minute walk to get to the ship.

Whichever method of transportation you choose, be sure to leave a bit early just in case you experience any delays – the boat will not wait for you if you are late. Check in is at Aloha Tower .

Safety is our first priority. The captain reserves the right to alter the cruise route for the comfort and safety of our guests. A cruise may be canceled due to severe weather in very rare cases.

Cancellations or changes for parties under 10 may be made up to 24 hours prior to your cruise departure, without charge. Cancellations made within 24 hours or “no showing” on your cruise date will result in a full charge.

A cultural guide to Honolulu, Oahu

Traditional arts, outdoor adventures and urban cool await in the heart of Hawaii, with beaches and lush green hillsides always nearby

Ages 0 to 17

Even if you’ve never been to Oahu, you’ve likely seen the North Shore’s monster waves and the Koolau Mountains’ rippled cliffs in films like Jurassic Park and TV series such as Lost . But this island is more than a backdrop: With traditions and cuisine rooted in ancient culture, museums showcasing historic artifacts and contemporary works, and concert halls and outdoor spaces playing host to festivals, Oahu has some serious main-character energy.   Formed by volcanic eruptions, the island is an easily explorable 44 miles long and 30 miles across—but packs in a lot of history. Settled by Polynesians around 500 C.E., conquered by King Kamehameha I in 1795, annexed by the U.S. in 1898, and attacked by Japan during the Second World War, it has had a tumultuous journey. Today, in a place where hula and the Hawaiian language were once outlawed, Oahu is experiencing a cultural resurgence. From Grammy award-winning Hawaiian music to menus highlighting taro and other culturally significant foods, to signage displaying original Hawaiian place names, you’ll find symbols of resilience—and resistance.

Art & architecture

Honolulu ’s open-air airport terminal greets visitors with an amuse-bouche of sculptures, murals, and gardens—a celebration of the environment and cultural diversity that you’ll see across Oahu.  Traditional Hawaiian hale (houses) were made of wood and other natural materials, and designed to allow natural air circulation. Today, you can feel the breeze blowing through open-air lobbies and halls of historic hotels, like The Royal Hawaiian , and the world’s largest open-air shopping center at Ala Moana . You’ll find native koa wood incorporated into modern buildings, such as the Hawaii State Capitol, which also features a sky-framing, open-air atrium.  Temples, shrines, churches, chapels, and heiau (Hawaiian sacred sites) sprinkled around Oahu reflect the variety of spiritual practices and structures, and some, like the Byodo-In Temple in Kaneohe, modeled after a larger Buddhist temple in Japan, invite visitors of all faiths to pause for a contemplative moment.

In Kaka`ako , you’ll find an al-fresco gallery of murals, credited with transforming this monochrome industrial neighborhood into a colorful cultural hub. Nearby, `Iolani Palace , a restoration of the royal residence, stands as a symbol of Hawaiian heritage and the only building in the world designed in American Florentine style.   Time your trip for a First Friday , and go gallery-hopping around Chinatown after browsing the Honolulu Museum of Art’s collection of more than 50,000 artifacts and works of art from around the globe. For some of the best contemporary Hawaiian artists, check out Capitol Modern , formerly known as the Hawaii State Art Museum. Engage with Oahu’s living arts with a theater performance at Kumu Kahua Theatre or through hula and ukulele lessons offered at the Royal Hawaiian Center and to guests at `Alohilani Resort and many other hotels.

Expert tips

The essentials

Fly into Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) in Honolulu. Waikiki is a 25- to 45-minute drive and the North Shore is about 45—longer if there’s traffic. Rental cars and rideshare options, such as Uber and Lyft, are available at the airport (rentals should be reserved in advance). Shared shuttles to Waikiki are also an option; there are service desks at baggage claim, but booking ahead is advisable to guarantee your spot. The cheapest way to get to downtown Honolulu or Waikiki is route 20 on TheBus, but it will take around an hour.

Tipping is customary for services, including restaurants, bars, hotels, guides, and drivers—15% for adequate service, 20% or more for excellent service, and $2 per bag for bellman. Although English is widely spoken, you will hear and see the Hawaiian language. Using basic Hawaiian phrases, such as “ mahalo ” (thank you) is appreciated. Reef-friendly sunscreen is a must; sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate are banned in Hawaii.

Getting around

TheBus is the cheapest way to get around, but not the quickest. It’s good for short distances within the city but not ideal for longer trips around the island. Determine what parts of Oahu you plan to visit, then look at bus routes to decide if it’s suitable for you. Drivers do not carry change, so you must bring the correct amount or load a HOLO card in advance. During rush hour, you may find standing room only.

Rental cars offer the most freedom to travel around the island, but can be pricey and sometimes sell out, so it’s best to reserve in advance. Parking in Honolulu and Waikiki can be challenging and expensive; rideshare services are a good alternative to driving in these areas. Biki bike rentals are also available for short jaunts around town; download the Biki app or buy the subscription online.

Accessibility

TheBus is wheelchair accessible and also welcomes service animals. People with disabilities who are unable to use TheBus may be eligible to use TheHandi-Van (contact TheHandi-van Eligibility Center for more info). Several popular beaches on Oahu provide all-terrain wheelchairs, including Ala Moana Beach Park, Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve, and Kuaola Regional Park. AccessSurf offers swimming and surfing programs for those with physical or cognitive disabilities. Many hotels, tours, museums, and other sites can accommodate a variety of needs but it’s best to inquire well in advance. For example, sign language interpreters can be arranged at the Bishop Museum with two weeks’ notice.

Every October, Oahu hosts Honolulu Pride, a month-long celebration that includes a festival, live music, arts events, performances, talks, food and drink specials, and a parade. Travelers will also find LGBTQ+ friendly restaurants, bars, and events throughout the year, such as drag shows and catamaran cruises hosted by the legendary Hula’s Bar & Lei Stand.

Food & drink

If there ever was a recipe for flavorful eats, Oahu’s tropical climate, mineral-rich soil, bountiful ocean, and multicultural influences could be it. You can take a global tasting tour without leaving the island: Sample ` ulu (breadfruit) and other island-grown superfoods at KCC Farmers Market , nibble Portuguese malasada pastries at Leonard’s Bakery , slurp spicy tofu soup at hole-in-the-wall eateries like O’Kims Korean Kitchen , sip sake at Japanese izakayas tucked along South King Street, and indulge in a five-course French-inspired dinner at La Vie .   While relaxed vibes are the norm—yes, your sundress and slippahs (sandals) are adequate attire for many restaurants—casual dining doesn’t mean low quality. Whether you refuel with South Shore Grill’s fish tacos after a surf sesh, try a plantation era-inspired “plate lunch” of kalua pork served with poi and lomi-lomi salmon at Waiāhole Poi Factory , or sit down to a multicourse fine-dining meal featuring hyper-seasonal ingredients at Mugen , you’ll get a taste of Oahu’s terroir and heritage. If you’re unsure where to start, join the Aloha Plate Food Tour and let local chef Lanai Tabura lead the way.

dinner cruise in oahu hawaii

Even the umbrella drinks get an upgrade on Oahu; savor sunset mai tais made with local rum at Hau Tree and The Mai Tai Bar , or slip behind The Lei Stand storefront to try craft cocktails infused with pineapple, Hawaiian chili, and other island ingredients at this chilled speakeasy. Then there’s the iconic Hawaiian shave ice: a colorful, ice-based treat that makes for a fun way to beat the heat.

Music

Turn on the radio or drop by a beach bar (perhaps joining the crowds singing along with Henry Kapono at Duke’s on Sunday ), and you’re likely to hear a mix of reggae, pop, rock, and traditional and contemporary Hawaiian and “island” music featuring slack-key, ukulele, and guitars. Oahu’s favorable weather sets the stage for outdoor music celebrations, including the Hawai`i `Ukulele Festival , concerts under the stars at open-air venues like the Waikiki Shell , and more intimate shows at beachside spots such as House Without a Key . Catch a performance by the Honolulu Symphony or the Hawaii Opera Theatre at The Blaisdell Center , or experience a creative blend of local culture, symphonic music, and celebrated artists like singer Paula Fuga and ukulele master Jake Shimabukuro, through the HapaSymphony Series at Hawaii Theatre.

Watch before you go

If you get the feeling you’re walking or driving through a movie set while roaming around the island, you very well could be. Oahu has had much more than 15 minutes of fame.  More than 200 Hollywood movies and TV shows, including Jurassic Park, Jurassic World , Jumanji , 50 First Dates , and Hawaii Five-O , have been filmed at Kualoa Ranch ( shown ) alone. Board a vintage bus and pose for photos among dinosaur bones on the movie tour around this private nature reserve, considered “Hollywood’s backlot.”  Rom-com fans may be disappointed to find Turtle Bay Resort no longer looks quite like it did in Forgetting Sarah Marshall , thanks to recent renovations—but the ocean views remain intact. You can also hike from the resort to another filming location: The banyan tree at Kawela Bay, seen in the Lost series as well as The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Pirates of the Caribbean .

Those who watch Hawaii Five-O will recognize the Diamond Head lookout, the Rainbow Tower at Hilton Hawaiian Village , and the Battleship USS Missouri Memorial at Pearl Harbor. To reach the latter, head to the Pearl Harbor Historic Sites’ visitors center where a Navy boat will shuttle you to the offshore memorial dedicated to crewman lost in the 1941 attack.
