It includes an outfit planner, budget worksheet, comparison guides, planning timelines, and more!

Packing for Boarding Day

Before I dive into explaining all the things you will need for your trip, I wanted to first discuss embarkation day. This is the very first day of your cruise when you board the cruise ship. Since you will give your luggage to the porters at the Disney Cruise Line terminal, you will probably want to keep a small carry-on bag with you when you embark.

beach items and a packing list

The DCL crew members will deliver your luggage to your stateroom later in the afternoon or even after dinner. It is a good idea to keep important things that you may need throughout the day with you in a carryon bag.

Some items that you would want to pack in your embarkation day bag include:

  • baby/toddler essentials
  • identification/ passports
  • Port Arrival Form
  • prescription medications
  • sea sickness medication
  • dollar bills for tipping
  • extra change of clothes
  • plastic bag to hold wet swimsuit
  • small bills for tipping
  • portable charger

For more detailed information on embarkation day, you can check out this post- Disney Cruise Line Guide to Embarkation Day . In that post, I also discuss what types of outfits are best to wear on embarkation day.

What to Pack for a Disney Cruise

If you are wondering what you should pack for your Disney cruise, this guide is a great place to start! It includes all the must haves that I take for my family. I highly recommend reading through all of the items below as we go into detail on what to pack and why you need each item.

Packing List for Bahamas or Beach Ports

If your cruise itinerary includes the Caribbean islands, the Bahamas, or Castaway Cay , you are probably going to be spending time on a beach. If that is the case, these are the items I recommend packing for your trip.

  • Beach Bag or Backpack – We carry the items listed below in this Beach Bag because it holds our belongings and also has a cooler section at the bottom. It also folds up really easily to fit in your suitcase, so it doesn’t take up a ton of room. (Amazon Affiliate Link)
  • Reef Safe Sunscreen – You’ll notice sunscreen guidelines and restrictions at many of the ports you visit. These islands require that coral or Reef Safe Sunscreen be used on their beaches to protect marine life. We prefer this Blue Lizard sunscreen because it’s great for sensitive skin. (Amazon Affiliate Link)
  • Water Shoes – Many of the beaches (including Castaway Cay at times) have lots of shells present. Water shoes help to protect your feet, so they don’t get cut or scraped by the shells or rocks.
  • Goggles – My kids require goggles any time they are swimming. We recently found these clip on goggles that are SO easy to put on and take off. You can find these nifty goggles in multiple colors here.(Amazon Affiliate Link)
  • Sand Toys – If your kids plan to play on the beach, you may want to pack a few sand toys to keep them busy. We like this Collapsible Sand Pail and Toys because they don’t take up a ton of space in your luggage. (Amazon Affiliate Link)
  • Refillable Water Bottles – We use Refillable Water Bottles both on the ship and off to keep water cool and easily on hand.

It’s important to note that you DO NOT need to pack beach towels. You can grab towels on the ship to take with you when you get off the ship in a port of call.

In general, you can wear whatever you want (within reason) on the Disney cruise. Even on formal night you will see loads of people wearing casual outfits and some in formal clothes.

You shouldn’t feel out of place in a gown/suit or in a sundress/polo shirt. Plenty of people will be wearing both types of clothing, so you will fit in no matter what you decide to do.

person packing a suitcase

DCL does have some dress code guidelines that you will want to follow if you eat in the specialty, adult only areas. You can find those guidelines here . These are the clothing items I typically pack for my family’s cruises:

Pack 2-3 swimsuits per person. This way you have an extra suit to wear while the other one is hanging to dry.

You are not supposed to enter certain areas of the ship (like the buffet) wearing swimsuits. We like to pack coverups/sundresses to throw on over our swimwear. This way you can eat breakfast and then swim without going back to your stateroom to change.

Dinner Attire

We usually eat in the Main Dining Rooms during our trips. You can typically find my husband in golf attire (polo and pants) and my daughters and I in casual dresses for dinner.

cruise packing hacks and pdf packing list with text overlay Disney Cruise Packing Tips and Hacks

I ALWAYS pack a cardigan or light jacket for my kids and I because the dining rooms can get chilly.

Day Outfits

In addition to your bathing suit and coverup, you will probably want an outfit to wear during the day. We tend to return to our stateroom after swimming to change into dry clothes before going back out for other activities.

Workout Clothes

If you plan on hitting the gym or the jogging track, you will want to include workout clothes on your packing list.

Other Essentials

Also don’t forget shoes, socks, undergarments, and pajamas! The Disney cruise ships do have laundry facilities available for super reasonable prices if you need to wash clothes on your trip.

Disney Cruise Must Haves

All of these items will not apply to everyone; however, I tried to include the really important things I’m always terrified of leaving at home!

  • Passports/Identification Documents – We use our passports at check in and then store them in the stateroom safe throughout the trip.
  • Driver’s License – Since we leave our passports onboard the ship, my husband and I take our driver’s licenses off the ship and into port. You will be asked to show your Key to the World card and your photo ID (not including minors) to get back on the ship.
  • Cash – Take a bunch of $1 bills for tipping. We tip our drivers to/from the port, porters, and room service to name a few.
  • Sea Sickness Medicine – I pack this in my embarkation bag just in case. You can read more of our tips on how to prevent and manage motion sickness here!
  • Port Arrival Form – This is the piece of paper you print once you finish online check in.
  • Other Important Necessities – glasses/contacts, phone, camera, chargers, medication

Disney Cruise Line provides some bathroom amenities in your cruise stateroom. These include shampoo, conditioner, lotion, and body wash.

Disney Magic Stateroom Bathroom Amenities

You may also want to pack the following:

  • Toothbrushes/Toothpaste
  • Floss/Mouthwash
  • Face Moisturizer
  • Shaving Cream/Razors
  • Hair Brush/Hair Products
  • Perfume/Cologne
  • Air Freshener
  • Flat Iron/Curling Iron
  • Hair Dryer (DCL provides one, but I bring my own.)

It’s important to note that if you are sailing in the Concierge level, your stateroom will have upgraded amenities. This is just one of the many Disney cruise Concierge perks .

For more information, you can read my post on how to upgrade to Concierge at the port .

Packing Tips for Organization

The items below come in super handy during your cruise, and they help to keep your Disney cruise stateroom really organized!

These hold your Key to the World card so that you always have easy access to it. I have recently started holding my Key card in my phone case since I always have my phone with me to use as a camera.

Collapsible Hamper

I take this with me every time we travel. Since it folds flat, it takes up very little space in your suitcase.

Packing Cubes

These packing cubes are AMAZING! You can buy them in different colors and assign each family member his/her own color. (Amazon Affiliate Link)

Packing Cubes

You can pack pajamas in one, workout clothes in another, undergarments in a different one, etc. They make it super easy to unpack your clothing because you can pile them on shelves or in drawers without mixing up your items. I HIGHLY recommend them!

Gallon Ziplock Bags

I pack anything that can potentially leak in a Ziplock bag. I also pack a few extra bags to hold wet swimsuits that way we can change clothes while in port and put our wet suits in a bag.

Magnetic Hooks

These are awesome!  Did you know that most of the walls, doors, and ceilings on the ships are magnetic?! That means you can stick these hooks virtually anywhere in your stateroom and they will be secure. You can hang wet swimsuits, lanyards, etc. from these hooks. You can grab the magnetic hooks we use here. (affiliate link)

Over the Door Shoe Organizer

I use the magnetic hooks mentioned above to attach this shoe organizer to the bathroom door in our stateroom. You can then use the shoe organizer (Amazon Affiliate Link) to hold anything from sunscreen to hairbrushes to toiletries.

Hanging Closet Shelves

I like to pack this because it folds up really flat and doesn’t take up much space. You can hang it inside your stateroom closet for more storage space.

Disney Magic Stateroom Closet Organizer

Special Disney Cruise Essentials

The items below are things you may want to pack and are mostly exclusive to Disney cruises. Although, some other cruise lines also have passengers that pack some of these items.

Door Decorations

Since the stateroom doors are magnetic, you can attach magnets to special decorations for some extra fun. (The majority of people do not do this, so don’t feel like it is something that is necessary.)

disney cruise concierge stateroom

On my most recent cruise, I bought some foam Christmas decorations from a local craft store. I hot glued magnets to the backs of these so they would attach to the magnetic stateroom door.

I want to caution you not to spend a ton of money on these decorations. Ours have been known to turn up missing during a cruise so make sure you are ok losing whatever you put up.

On the Disney Fantasy, Disney Wish, and Disney Dream, you need to put a card in the power slot in order to have electricity in your room. In other words, your stateroom lights and outlets only work with a card in the slot.

→ → Pro Tip – Since any credit card sized card will do, we like to use an old Disney gift card as our light card. You can even use a chip clip or hot glue a magnet to the back of the card so that it sticks to the wall when it’s not in use.

Pirate Night Outfit

Disney Cruise Line assigns one night per cruise as a themed “Pirate Night.”  You will notice that some people go ALL OUT in their pirate attire on this night. So, if you love to dress in costume, this is the perfect opportunity for you to show off your pirate costume!

luggage and organization images with text overlay Disney Cruise Packing List and Hacks

You will find that others go more low key by wearing pirate themed shirts or a couple pirate accessories. If you don’t want to dress up, that is perfectly fine too!

Other DCL Extras

Some Disney cruisers also make sure to pack things like Disney pins for pin trading, glow sticks for deck parties, fish extenders (gifts for exchanging), princess dresses, Mickey ears, and an autograph book for character signing. Also, if you are traveling on one of the Disney Cruise Line ships that offers a themed cruise like Halloween on the High Seas, Merrytime Christmas, Star Wars, or Marvel Day at Sea, you may want to pack for those events as well.

Other Must Haves

The following items are random things you may want to add to your packing list.

  • Clothes Pins – You can use these to hang clothes to dry in the bathroom.
  • Dish Soap/Bottle Brush – If you bring refillable water bottles, you will want to pack dish soap to clean them in the bathroom. I also pack a bottle brush to reach down into the water bottle for cleaning.
  • Pre-packaged Snacks – We pack pre-packaged items like popcorn and candy to take with us to the nightly shows so we don’t have to buy any onboard.
  • Downy Wrinkle Releaser – Greatest thing ever!!!!  If you have never used Downy Wrinkle Releaser, you are missing out. I literally NEVER iron. You just spray this on your clothes, smooth them out, and the wrinkles disappear as it dries.

Baby and Toddler Packing List

If you are traveling with a baby or toddler, you will have extra items to take with you. Disney Cruise Line provides milk, juice, and water for free. They are also great about providing puréed food for little ones.

Some other items you may want to pack are as follows:

  • diaper rash cream
  • disposable diaper bags
  • favorite toys/blankets
  • sippy cups/bottles
  • pacifiers
  • formula/breast feeding accessories
  • swim diapers

If you’re looking for a stress-free way to get to the cruise terminal, we highly recommend utilizing the Disney Cruise Line ground transportation both before and after your cruise.

As you plan your DCL vacation, try not to stress about packing or organizing your Disney cruise stateroom. Just focus on taking the essentials and go from there. If you forget something, the gift shop on the Disney ship should sell the miscellaneous items you may need. And you don’t need to worry about toting credit cards to the onboard shop since DCL will just charge your account for your purchase. We hope you have the best time!

The ultimate Disney cruise packing list

Summer Hull

A Disney cruise is all but guaranteed to be an amazing, relaxing and downright fun vacation, but knowing what to pack for a vacation on Disney Cruise Line can be overwhelming, especially if this is your first cruise.

With seven Disney cruises under my family's sea legs to destinations ranging from the sunny Bahamas to chilly Alaska, I now consider myself a Disney packing expert. Here is a tried-and-true Disney cruise packing list to take you from the beach to glaciers and back again.

Passports, birth certificates and important documents

Do you need to pack a passport for a disney cruise.

It's always a good idea to have a passport when you cruise , even if it isn't required. You never know if there will be an unexpected situation or emergency causing you to debark your ship early and fly home from a foreign country.

But it's not always feasible for everyone in your travel party to have a passport. The good news is there are lots of Disney cruises that do not require you to pack a passport.

For example, round-trip sailings from Port Canaveral, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Galveston, San Diego, San Juan, New Orleans and New York require only an original state-issued birth certificate and government-issued photo ID. Kids 15 and under do not need a government-issued ID.

However, if you are sailing from Vancouver to Alaska, you will need a passport if you are 16 or older. Those under 16 can do that sailing with a state-issued birth certificate, which works for land and sea crossings, but everyone who arrives in Canada by air from the U.S. would need a passport.

Pro tip: Don't put passports in your checked bags! You must show them in the cruise terminal when you check in for your sailing, so put them in your embarkation day backpack.

Other required documents

Be sure to pack any other documents you might need to show your identity, citizenship and ability to cruise:

  • Non-expired government-issued ID
  • A letter of permission to travel without the other custodial parent if sailing solo with your kids internationally (or if you're sailing with your grandkids or another child without their parents)
  • Your Disney Cruise Port Arrival Form with QR code (have this handy when you board)
  • A letter from your doctor if you're pregnant, saying you're not further along than 23 weeks and safe to travel

Pack your luggage tags when you travel to the port and attach them to the luggage that the crew will deliver to your cabin.

Don't stress about what you're going to wear on a Disney cruise. In most areas of the ship, casual, comfortable clothes are always appropriate.

disney cruise ship packing list

How long your cruise is, where it is going and what you are doing will dictate what you need to pack per person. Here are some suggestions on wardrobe items to pack for your Disney cruise.

  • One casual outfit per day
  • One to two pairs of sleepwear
  • One to two swimsuits — two if heading to a warm destination and you plan to swim frequently
  • Rash guards or other UV protectant swim shirts if you want to spend the day outside in the sun
  • Swimsuit cover-up
  • One zip-up hoodie or sweater for the movies and evening shows if you get cold
  • Work out gear, if desired, for the gym, onboard walking/running track or the Castaway Cay 5K
  • Shoes: one pair of sneakers, one pair of sandals, one pair of water shoes (most important on Disney Wish, which has a hot deck) and one nicer pair of shoes for evenings (optional)
  • Nicer outfits if you want to dress up at night or are dining in an adult-only restaurant such as Palo , Remy or Enchante with fancier dress codes
  • Mickey ears: optional but fun
  • Excursion-specific gear: appropriate clothes for port activities, which may mean an extra casual outfit for that day if you expect to get hot or sweaty, or an umbrella or rain gear if your tour will operate rain or shine

If sailing to Alaska:

  • Rain jacket
  • Warmer outer layers, such as a vest or long sleeve shirt
  • Warm gloves and a hat
  • Hiking boots, if necessary

If on a seven-day or longer sailing:

  • Dressy attire for the optional "formal night" that takes place once every seven-night or longer cruise
  • Travel-sized laundry detergent or a travel-friendly laundry sheet if you want to use the washing machines and dryers on the ships (available for a small fee using your Key to the World Card, or you can buy detergent on the ship)

Themed outfits

Your Disney Cruise will likely have a themed night, though the theme will depend on where you're sailing.

Mexico and Caribbean cruises most reliably have pirate night, which is the most common theme on a Disney sailing. However, Alaska sailings often have a Frozen-themed evening instead. Many cruisers dress up for these events.

Pirate night

Most Disney Cruises have a pirate-themed evening where everyone, even the characters, dresses up in pirate attire. The crew may lay out pirate bandanas in your stateroom for you to wear, but you should bring your own pirate gear from home. It's a bunch of fun to lean into the theme — and it's much cheaper to bring from home than buy onboard.

'Frozen' night

If you're sailing to Alaska, you'll get a "Frozen"-themed night instead. Pack your Elsa dress, Nordic-looking sweater or Sven the reindeer outfit and join in the fun.

Princess dresses and other costumes

There's never not an appropriate time to dress in your princess best on a Disney cruise. You can buy princess dresses for your kids at the Bibbity Boppity Boutique, but you'll save some cash by bringing one from home.

disney cruise ship packing list

The BBB package that includes the dress, backpack and makeup is about $200. If you bring your own dress, the hair-and-makeup-only package comes with a T-shirt and costs half that amount. I'm partial to the non-itchy dresses from Little Dress Up Shop if you want something both washable and wearable.

Either way, when you're in that magical age range, there's nothing like meeting your favorite princess onboard while being dressed in your own royal ballgown.

If you're sailing on one of Disney's Marvel, Pixar or other themed cruises, you may want to pack costumes or outfits to represent your favorite superheroes or movie characters. Halloween costumes are a must on Halloween on the High Seas cruises, and holiday apparel won't go amiss on Very Merrytime cruises around the holidays.

Lanyards — if it's your 1st Disney cruise

While the ships are working on transitioning to a DisneyBand+ system , most still give passengers a keycard to use as a room key and onboard charge card. Though it isn't the most stylish look, wearing your keycard around your neck via a lanyard is a functional solution to keep your card handy (and keep your kids from losing theirs), so pack a lanyard to hold your key card if it's your first Disney Cruise.

If you are a returning cruiser with Silver, Gold, Platinum or Pearl status in the Disney Castaway Club program , a free lanyard should await you in your cabin. It will be themed to your level in the Castaway program.

Refillable water bottle and coffee mug

Regular self-pour coffee and soda are free on a Disney Cruise — but only up on the pool deck and in the buffet area. Unless you like going up and down the stairs frequently to grab the small paper cups, pack a coffee mug with a lid or other container to hold the coffee or soda you want.

Refillable water bottle stations are available around the ship, so pack a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated for free.

You'll need to pay extra for soda in cans and plastic water bottles (unless you are staying in the concierge level and getting them for free from the concierge fridge). So you'll save money if you bring your own containers and refill from the dispensers.

Portable charger

You're going to be using your phone a ton on your Disney cruise, whether to find activities or message your sailing party in the Disney cruise app or to take plenty of pictures. Batteries can drain quickly — especially on port days.

Pack a portable charger or power bank , so you don't run out of battery juice while you're on the go.

Magnetic hooks

Cruise cabins are small. If you are traveling with a family, every nook and cranny can fill up quickly. Take advantage of the ship's metal frame by packing magnetic hooks that you can attach to your cabin's walls and doors. They create the perfect spots to hang your keycards, hats, light jackets, bags and/or swimsuits.

Amazon sells some affordable magnetic hooks .

For your port excursion days, long afternoons on the pool deck, and for your embarkation and debarkation days, you'll want a good backpack or large crossbody bag to keep the things you need handy.

Related: These are our favorite travel backpacks

What to pack in your embarkation day backpack

You will most likely hand your larger suitcases to the porters at the pier when you arrive, and they won't arrive in your cabin until mid-afternoon. Therefore, you'll want to pack anything you need to check in for your cruise or your first afternoon on board in the backpack you keep with you.

Some of those items include:

  • Passports, IDs and boarding documents
  • Money and credit cards
  • Any necessary medication
  • Electronics and external charger/battery pack
  • Swimsuit, sunscreen, flip flops, sun hat

Related: Items you should always pack in your cruise carry-on bag

Pro tip: One of the best times to swim without crowds or use the waterslides without waiting is shortly after boarding. Don't be shy about popping into that swimsuit in a restroom (or wearing it under the clothes you board in) and taking a ride on the slide before half the ship has had time to embark. If you are one of the first to board, the pool deck attractions may not be open yet, but usually by noon or 1 p.m., you should be good to go.

disney cruise ship packing list

Door decorations

If you walk the halls of a Disney cruise ship, you'll see decorations on many doors. Usually, these decorations consist of magnets, some personalized to the guests in the cabin or the cruise itself.

disney cruise ship packing list

It's not only fun to have a decorated door, but it can also help your kids (and you!) easily spot your door while you're still getting used to the ship.

You can buy personalized items on Etsy or even find some Disney cruise accessories on Amazon . Just order with enough buffer to allow time for personalization.

Fish extenders and other Disney accessories

Ignore this part if this is your first Disney cruise or you're already overwhelmed with the packing and planning. We've sailed seven times with Disney and only done this once.

But if you want to go all-in on the Disney Cruise Line experience, you can join an informal group on Facebook whose participants exchange gifts throughout the cruise. Just search for your ship name and sailing date in Facebook to find your group.

To join the fun, you must pack a "fish extender," a pouch you hang from the fish-shaped mail holder above your cabin door. With enough advance time, you can order a personalized fish extender on Etsy or just get a basic one on Amazon .

disney cruise ship packing list

Even if you don't join a gift-exchange group, you might want to hang up a fish extender anyway. Sometimes other cruisers will surprise cabins with small gifts like stickers and candies. Or you can delight your own kids with unexpected gifts you place into the pouches yourself.

disney cruise ship packing list

If all of that sounds like too much, but you'd like to exchange a bit of Disney magic, some cruisers put up pin trading boards on their cabin doors. You can pick up pins on ShopDisney or Amazon before your sailing and then make pin trades as you walk the halls.

Food and drinks

Byo wine or beer.

If you are 21 or older, you can bring up to two bottles of unopened wine or Champagne (no larger than 750 ml) or six beers (no larger than 12 ounces each) at the beginning of the sailing and at each port of call. The catch is you must carry these on board yourself and cannot put them into your checked bags.

disney cruise ship packing list

Nonalcoholic beverages

If you want to stock your stateroom minifridge with Gatorade, bottles of water or cans of soda, you can bring those on board, too. They must be unopened, and, as with the wine, you have to carry them on yourself, so the only real restriction is your ability to carry the drinks yourself.

You can also bring nonperishable snack foods in original factory-sealed packaging if you want specific snack items. If you have a baby who needs special foods or formula, bring that along, too. If you don't want to lug a bunch of jars, you can request fresh, pureed vegetables in the main dining rooms and via room service.

Related: Things you can't bring onboard a cruise

Cash and cards

You'll likely want some cash on hand for tips for excursion tour guides, your room host, the crew delivering room service and baggage handlers at the pier. While U.S. dollars are generally welcome as tips in ports such as Nassau and Mexico, you'll want local currency for tips and purchases in places like Europe.

Credit cards

In most cases, the purchases you make on the ship will be charged to the credit card you have on file. Maximize your spend by bringing one of the best credit cards for cruises , such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve , which will award 3 points per dollar for travel charges. For onshore purchases in the ports, you'll want to pack a credit card that charges no foreign transaction fees .

The Disney Visa is another popular credit card to consider if you are sailing with Disney Cruise Line.

Related: Is the Disney Visa worth it?

Disney gift cards

If you want to pay for some — or all — of your onboard purchases, tips added to your account, etc., with discounted Disney gift cards , be sure to pack those along for your trip. You can apply those to your account at the guest services desk.

Bottom line

It's hard to resist the urge to overpack , but there are only a few must-pack essentials for a Disney cruise — or any other cruise for that matter. Pack comfortable clothes and shoes, something to swim in, and necessary identification and funds, and the rest is just gravy. You can always wash clothes on board — or even visit a shop on board or in port for forgotten essentials.

But, if you want to be as prepared as possible, this Disney cruise packing list should set you up for a magical cruise.

Preparing for Your Cruise – Frequently Asked Questions

What kinds of clothing, toiletries or other items should I pack for my cruise?

As a general guide, bring clothing you would take on a vacation to the itinerary you’re on, such as the Caribbean , Europe or The Bahamas .

You can pack a little lighter, because there is a hair dryer in every stateroom as well as shampoo, conditioner, body lotion and soap.

Important Items Be sure to carry all proof of citizenship, required documents , your method of payment, prescription medications (in original containers) and any valuable items with you.

Clothing Tropical itineraries or summer travel – Bring lightweight clothing such as shorts, slacks, sundresses, jeans and short-sleeved or sleeveless tops.

Northern itineraries or winter travel – Pack warmer clothing, including a light jacket, sweatshirt or sweater, and socks.

Footwear – You may want to do some walking during port stops, so be sure to pack comfortable shoes like boat shoes, sandals or athletic shoes.

Sun wear – Swimsuits, hats or visors and sunglasses are a must for most of our itineraries. Also pack a high-SPF waterproof sunscreen if you plan to be at the pool or outdoors.

Costumes – During themed cruises and onboard celebrations like Pirate Night, Guests are invited to dress in costume. We value safety and good judgment and ask Guests to choose costumes that are family friendly, not obstructive, objectionable, offensive or violent. To avoid any disappointment or delay in the boarding process, please refrain from bringing toys or props that resemble guns, knives or other related implements. Masks that completely cover a person’s face may only be worn when standing still at character photo locations and must be carried when moving around the ship. Guests may dress as their favorite character, but may not pose for pictures or sign autographs. Guests that fail to comply with these guidelines may be removed from events unless their costume can be modified.

Dressy attire – If you are planning to dine at Palo , Palo Steakhouse , Enchanté or Remy during your cruise, be sure to pack appropriate clothing for these more formal, adults-only dining experiences.

Other Items Corrective lenses – If you wear prescription glasses or contact lenses, be sure to pack spare glasses or extra contacts.

Stroller – We recommend you bring your own stroller. However a limited number of strollers are available for rent on board .

Golf clubs – If you plan to golf at any of the port stops, you are welcome to bring your clubs. Please note that clubs do not count against your 2-bag limit, but you will need to store them in your stateroom.

Essential Travel Documents to Pack for Your Disney Cruise

A passport being held up for the camera in front of a Disney Cruise Ship

When packing for any trip, the first things that should go in your bag are your travel documents and identification. For a Disney cruise, here are the essentials:

  • Photo ID : All guests (18+) must present a valid government-issued photo ID to board the ship at the start of a cruise.
  • Passport and Entry Visa : You may also need to show a valid passport and travel visa for certain international trips. Even if your cruise doesn’t require a passport, it’s wise to have one — you’ll need it to board a plane if you miss the ship in an international port or have an emergency and need to fly home from overseas.
  • Documents for Minors : Minors can use a passport or birth certificate to check in. Additionally, A minor traveling without a parent or legal guardian needs an Authorization for Minor to Travel form signed by their parent or guardian.
  • Disney Cruise Documents : Your check-in form, reservation confirmation, passenger registration forms, and cruise contract should be packed or accessible electronically.
  • Travel Insurance Documents : Be sure to pack your travel insurance policy information in case you need to make a claim during your trip.

Pro Tip : Photocopy all documents and leave a set with family or friends at home.

Must-Have Toiletries to Pack for Disney Cruises

Don’t let forgotten toiletries ruin your Disney cruise. Be sure to pack:

  • Prescriptions : Bring ample quantities of medications in original bottles.
  • Motion sickness relief : Sea-Bands, Dramamine, and ginger candies can ease nausea.
  • Pain relievers : For headaches, cramps, sore muscles — ibuprofen, acetaminophen, aspirin.
  • Sunscreen : Water resistant SPF 50+ to protect skin in tropical climates.
  • After-sun aloe vera gel : Soothes sunburns and skin irritations.
  • Specific personal care items : Contact solutions, cosmetics, sanitary products, etc.

Pro Tip : Purchase travel-size toiletries to conserve luggage space. Items over 3.4 oz (100 ml) can’t fly. Sundries are sold onboard the ship, but they’ll be much cheaper if purchased on dry land before your cruise.

Clothing & Accessories to Pack for Disney Cruises

Disney Packing List Luggage

My family and I are often surprised by how much the temperature can fluctuate, particularly at night. Therefore, it is crucial to pack for any scenario. Additionally, it’s essential to keep in mind that the dress code on Disney Cruise Line ships is casual during the day but can become formal at night. Below are some clothing and accessory must-haves that we always pack:

  • T-shirts, shorts, pants, and dresses : Pack casual basics for daytime wear. Choose moisture-wicking fabrics.
  • Swimsuits and cover-ups : Bring at least two swimsuits per person, plus cover-ups for the pool deck. Consider rash guards for sun protection.
  • Layers : Even warm-climate cruises can have a sort of “wind chill factor” due to the ship’s forward motion. Bring warm clothing such as jackets, sweaters, and sweatshirts for the cooler evenings. Our kids love snuggling up in a hoodie for the movies.
  • Rain jackets or ponchos : These are handy if you encounter rain during port excursions.
  • Formalwear : Pack cocktail attire or suits/dresses for a formal night. Check your ship’s dress code.
  • Footwear: Pack sandals, pool shoes, sneakers, dress shoes, and slippers.
  • Hats : Both sun hats and Disney ears are must-haves for us!
  • Nightwear : Robes and slippers are provided for comfort, but you may want to bring pajamas to lounge in your cabin.
  • Basics : Socks, undies, and undershirts seem obvious… until you forget to pack them!
  • Baby supplies : If you are cruising with a baby, pack regular and swim diapers, bottles, food, pacifiers, rash cream, stroller, games, baby hat, bibs, and blankets.

Pro Tip : Limit footwear to three or four versatile pairs to save luggage space.

Fun Specialty Items to Pack for Disney Cruises

In addition to your regular cruise attire, there are some specialty items that can add to your Disney cruise experience. Here are some fun things to consider packing:

  • Themed costumes : We always bring a Disney, pirate, princess, or superhero costume for themed parties and events for the kids, and Mickey Mouse ears for everyone, including us adults!
  • Autograph books : Our kids love collecting drawings and signatures from Disney characters.
  • Decorations : We pack Disney door magnets and lightweight props to customize our cabin.
  • Snorkel gear : Bring your own for Castaway Cay to save on rental fees.
  • Inflatables and water toys : These make the pool deck more fun for kids. Disney sells branded options. (Note that Pool Noodles are prohibited.)

Pro Tip : Purchase Disney cruise accessories and toys ahead of time for the best selection and prices. Specialty items sold onboard can be pricey. Also, please remember that costumes must be family-friendly — not violent, offensive, obstructive, or objectionable.

Packing Essential Electronics for Your Disney Cruise

Screenshot showing the DCL Navigator App

Disney Cruise Line Navigator App

Technology helps keep your Disney cruise relaxing and hassle-free. Here are some of our must-pack electronics:

  • Smartphone : We use the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app and take plenty of photos! Connect to the ship’s WiFi .
  • Camera : Capture family memories with a DSLR, action cam, or point-and-shoot.
  • Headphones or earbuds : We use them at night so we don’t disturb the sleeping kiddos.
  • Memory cards : You’ll take more pics than you expect (my co-worker Jackie snapped nearly 3,500 photos on his last Alaska cruise) ! Have extra storage to ensure you don’t miss a single moment.
  • Portable chargers : We use these a lot since our kids have iPads onboard.
  • Electronics organizers : Use packing cubes, bags, or kits to corral cords, chargers, batteries, and memory cards.

Pro Tip : Purchase high-capacity memory cards before your trip to avoid running out of space for photos.

Helpful Extras for Your Disney Cruise Packing List

In addition to your clothes and electronics, here are some miscellaneous but useful items to pack for a Disney cruise :

  • Refillable water bottle : We stay hydrated using the ship’s filtered water stations.
  • Travel mug or tumbler : Take your coffee, tea, or soda on the go.
  • Lanyard or DisneyBand+ : Keep your Key to the World card or DisneyBand+ handy to unlock your stateroom.
  • Hanging Organizer : Make the most of cabin storage by using hanging shelves, shoe organizers, or a clothesline and clips to hang damp swimsuits to dry after multiple swims. (Note that Disney forbids anything which hangs “over-the-door”.)
  • Portable Fan or White Noise Machine : Provides white noise and/or air circulation in your snug stateroom. (May need to be inspected by the ship’s electrician before using.)
  • Travel first-aid kit : Bandages, medicines, supplements, motion sickness relief, and other healthcare items.
  • Guidebooks : They can provide information about ports of call to help you plan excursions.
  • Ziploc bags : Keep items like wet clothes contained.
  • Laundry bags : Keep dirty clothes separate for sending out to the laundry service or just to keep from fouling up your suitcase.
  • Mini umbrella : We pack one for unexpected rain showers at ports of call.

Pro Tip : Pack a couple of magnetic hooks to conveniently hang hats, keys, or towels in your cabin.

What Prohibited Items Should I Leave at Home?

Forbidden items range from the obvious to the somewhat surprising. Here’s just a small sampling of what is not allowed on Disney cruise ships:

  • Illicit Drugs
  • Medically-Prescribed Marijuana
  • Baby Bottle Sterilizers/Warmers (but Guest Services will let you borrow one for free)
  • Electric Irons (the ship has irons in the laundry room)
  • Surge Protectors / Power Strips / Extension Cords
  • Christmas Lights
  • Pool Noodles
  • Many, Many More Items

You should thoroughly review Disney’s extensive list of prohibited and restricted items before you pack your suitcase , even if you can’t possibly imagine that you’d pack something prohibited. As I said, some items on the list might surprise you .

At best, packing a prohibited item may result in it being confiscated and your checked bags being held until late in the evening on your first day onboard; at worst, it could result in severe criminal penalties.

In addition to the completely prohibited items, other items are restricted, meaning they’re allowed only in certain quantities or only after inspection by the crew. The list linked above covers those, too.

FAQ: Packing List for Disney Cruises

How many bags can you bring on a disney cruise.

Disney allows each passenger to bring up to two checked suitcases, one carry-on bag, and one personal item like a purse or backpack. This offers plenty of room for packing needs.

Can you bring alcohol on a Disney cruise?

Yes. Guests who are 21 years and older are allowed to bring a maximum of two unopened bottles of wine or champagne (not exceeding 750 ml) or six beers (not exceeding 12 oz) with them at the beginning of the cruise and at each port of call. Passengers must carry their alcohol on the Disney ship by hand and not pack it away in their checked luggage.

Should I bring a reusable water bottle for my Disney cruise?

Yes, packing a refillable water bottle is highly recommended. Disney has filtered water stations on their ships, so you can fill up for free. This saves money and reduces waste.

Should I pack beach towels for my Disney cruise?

No need – Disney provides towels at the pool decks and on Disney’s private island of Castaway Cay (and the new Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point ). Packing your own towels just takes up precious luggage space.

How much cash should I bring for my Disney cruise?

We recommend bringing $200-$500 in cash for port purchases, excursion tips, and any other incidentals. You won’t need cash onboard since Disney cruises are cashless.

Do you get shampoo and shower products on a Disney cruise?

Yes, Disney provides shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion, and hand soap in staterooms. You’re welcome to bring your own preferred products, but Disney’s are high quality.

Can I bring full-size toiletries in carry-on luggage for my cruise?

Yes, unlike air travel, there are no restrictions on the size of toiletries for Disney cruises. However, liquids over 3.4 oz cannot be in checked luggage at the airport.

Can I keep the Disney Cruise Line robe as a souvenir?

Unfortunately, the plush robes and slippers provided in some staterooms are not meant to be taken home as keepsakes. But they sure are comfy during your trip! If you want a Disney Cruise robe of your very own, check the onboard shops or look into the luxury/romance packages offered through the Onboard Gifts program.

What’s the dress code during Pirates Night on a Disney cruise?

Disney encourages passengers of all ages to dress up in pirate costumes or wear pirate-themed accessories to fully embrace the pirate theme party. You can purchase costumes onboard or bring your own. While all of this is fun, it is not required — you can dress however you like (within the normal cruise dress code).

How strict is the formal night dress code on Disney cruises?

For formal nights, cocktail dresses or suits are encouraged but not required in the main dining rooms. Jeans and polo shirts meet the minimum dress code, but most guests like to dress up. You can also skip out on the formal dinner and enjoy a casual meal elsewhere on the ship. Check the Navigator for details.

Ultimate Disney cruise packing list

Ultimate Disney cruise packing list

Much of packing for a Disney cruise is like any other trip, but there are some specific things you might want to bring that you wouldn’t on most other vacations.

Worried about luggage space in your stateroom? While it’s true that staterooms are generally much smaller than an average hotel room, there is plenty of storage, including space under the bed for luggage.

Going on an Alaskan cruise? That requires different things than your typical Caribbean cruise. Check our our Alaskan cruise packing list for that .

In this article

Clothing Items

You’ll want to pack your normal clothes for the temps which will usually include things like shorts, shirts, capris, PJs, and swimsuits .

disney cruise ship packing list

In addition to that, you might want to also include special clothing for themed nights (Pirate Night, semi-formal, formal) and dressy clothes if dining at 1 of the adult-exclusive restaurants.

CONSIDER PACKING:

  • Pants/capris/leggings
  • Suit/dressy clothes  (only if you are planning to dress up for formal night or have a reservation at 1 of the adult-exclusive restaurants)
  • Dress shoes  (for formal night)
  • Flip-flops or sandals
  • Hairbands & accessories
  • Hats/visors
  • Sunglasses w/strap
  • Swimsuit cover-ups

You probably have a set of typical toiletries that you bring on trips, so be sure to include those on a Disney cruise as well.

Disney Cruise Line does provide lotion, shower gel, shampoo, and conditioner so no need to pack those unless you have a specific brand you want to use.

disney cruise ship packing list

For sunscreen, check to see if any of the places your cruise is going require reef-safe sunscreen to be used.

  • Shower gel  (Disney Cruise Line provides full-sized bottles in the shower)
  • Shampoo  (Disney Cruise Line provides full-sized bottles in the shower)
  • Hair conditioner  (Disney Cruise Line provides full-sized bottles in the shower)
  • Contacts/glasses
  • Contact lens solution & case
  • Sunscreen (might need a reef-safe option in some ports)
  • Lip balm w/sunscreen
  • Face lotion
  • Body lotion  (Disney Cruise Line provides full-sized bottles in the bathroom)
  • Make-up remover
  • Nail polish
  • Nail polish remover
  • Tampons/pads
  • Foot powder
  • Shaving cream
  • Nail clippers
  • Hair brush/comb
  • Hair gel/mousse
  • Blow-dryer  (Disney Cruise Line provides full-sized hair dryers)
  • Travel hair diffuser  (Some ships will have them, but others don’t)
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Kids shampoo
  • Kids toothbrushes
  • Kids bath soap
  • Kids hairbrush/comb

Laundry Supplies

You might consider bringing some basic laundry supplies on the cruise, just in case you want to wash some things – laundry detergent, dryer sheets , etc.

You can use your Key to the World room key to pay for the machines.

In addition to that, we always bring a collapsible hamper for dirty clothes which helps keep everything tidy in the small stateroom space.

  • Laundry soap
  • Dryer sheets
  • Stain remover
  • Pop-up hamper
  • Wrinkle release spray

Documents and money

While we used to have to bring hard copies of a lot more documents than we do now, there are still a few things you’ll need to bring.

Those items include your passports (make sure you have at least 6 months until they expire!) and your Port Arrival Form (can also save it to your phone if you don’t want to print it).

disney cruise ship packing list

For money, you’ll likely use room charges and credit cards for most things, but cash is needed for tipping anybody who handles your luggage and any tips you want to give your servers and stateroom attendant.

I almost always bring $200 in cash when cruising.

  • Passports/Drivers Licenses/Birth Certificates
  • Hotel confirmations
  • Rental car confirmation
  • Boarding passes
  • Cash/credit cards
  • Dollar bills for tips & tolls
  • Notepad/notebook
  • Insurance cards
  • Membership cards (AAA, DVC)
  • Addresses for postcards

Download the packing list (PDF, Google Doc)

  • Get the Google Sheet packing list (make a copy from the File menu)

You’ll want to pack your prescription medicine , of course, but also consider packing more over-the-counter meds just in case. You can’t run to a pharmacy or have items delivered on a ship like you can on land, so it can be helpful to have some basics on hand just in case.

disney cruise ship packing list

You might want to include sea sickness remedies as some cruises can be rocky.

  • Prescription medications
  • Moleskin (for blisters)
  • Antibiotic ointment
  • Anti-itch gel/spray
  • Birth control (or other prophylactic)
  • Pain medicine (like Tylenol, Advil, etc.)
  • Kids pain medicine
  • Motion sickness remedies
  • Sinus/allergy medicine
  • Cough drops

Baby and kid stuff

Be sure to bring all of your basics and in plenty of supply as they won’t be as easy or affordable on the ship.

For little ones, that might also include a stroller which is very common to see onboard as you can do a lot of walking.

disney cruise ship packing list

Also make sure your packing for littles includes entertainment that doesn’t require streaming as that can be difficult to do on the ship, even with the highest level of WiFi.

  • Swim diapers
  • Stroller
  • Baby monitor  (Will be inspected and returned if approved)
  • Blanket/toy
  • Board games
  • Handheld games
  • Kids ID tags
  • Outlet covers

Electronics and gadgets

Throw your normal gadgets in your bags, but also consider a few things that are handy when cruising.

That can include:

  • A waterproof lanyard pouch for your phone – if you’ll be getting in the water with your phone
  • USB hub for your stateroom – you can’t bring power strips, but you can bring a USB hub to make it easier to plug in all of your devices
  • DisneyBand+/MagicBand+ – if you already own a MagicBand+, you can bring it on your cruise to use on board. Disney Cruise Line calls them DisneyBand+ but it’s the same as MagicBand+.

disney cruise ship packing list

  • Ear buds/headphones – with several people in a small space, it can be helpful for everyone to have ear buds or headphones to listen to their own devices. We are big fans of Bluetooth headbands which are easy to wear while in bed.
  • Binoculars – if you want to be able to see things at a distance, bring some binoculars.
  • MagicBand+/DisneyBand+
  • Camera or smartphone
  • Portable charger and extra batteries
  • Travel adapters (if traveling from outside the United States)
  • Waterproof phone case or pouch
  • Earbuds/headphones
  • Charging cords for all devices
  • Battery powered nightlight

Miscellaneous Items

In addition to all of the items above, there are some random things that we would highly suggest bringing.

Here are some ideas:

  • Magnetic hooks – the doors are magnetic (on some ships, the walls are too) so having hooks to use makes it much easier to keep the cabin organized
  • Lanyards – if you’ve cruised with DCL before, you’ll be given a complimentary lanyard in your room. First time cruisers will need to bring their own. This is helpful for carrying your Key to the World card and credit card.
  • Alcohol – Disney Cruise Line allows each person to bring a 6-pack of beer or two 750 mL bottles of wine/champagne. It needs to be brought on board in a carryon bag, not a checked bag.

disney cruise ship packing list

  • Big cups – DCL has self-serve beverage stations where you can get unlimited drinks, but they only give you small cups. It’s convenient to bring your own for bigger refills. I like to have 1 cup for soda and an insulated cup for water (fill it before bed and it’ll still be cold by morning).
  • Door decorations – a big part of Disney cruises is the door decor on each stateroom. You can use magnets to decorate, string lights, etc.

Special Dining Attire

  • Adult Only Restaurants: At a minimum, pack a cocktail dress or a suit and tie.

This is why having the right special dining attire in your Disney cruise packing list enhances these occasions. Whether it’s an elegant dinner at Palo or a whimsical meal at Remy, dressing up adds to the ambiance. For these special nights, include sophisticated options in your Disney cruise clothes – think cocktail dresses for women, and dress shirts with slacks, or even a suit for men. Formal or semi-formal attire is recommended. Dress casual attire with a polished look (such as dress pants, jeans in good condition, collared shirts blouses, and lifestyle shoes). Clothing such as T-shirts, swimwear, and sports attire is not permitted. By carefully selecting your special dining attire , you ensure that you’re not only enjoying the exquisite meals but also feeling part of the enchanting atmosphere.

  • Reusable Water Bottles: Stay hydrated as you explore the ship and the islands.
  • Waterproof Lanyard:  Your room key will need to be on you at all times.

  • Themed Magnets:  It’s common and encouraged to personalize your stateroom door with magnetic decorations.
  • Toiletries:  Soaps, deodorants, lotions, toothpaste and brushes, makeup/beauty products, razors and shaving cream.

  • Prohibited Items: Check Disney Cruise Line’s prohibited items list   for the full list of updated items  including irons, coffee makers, and certain toys.
  • Overpacking: Space is limited, so only bring what you need.

When planning your dream vacation, knowing what not to pack for a Disney Cruise is just as important as what to bring. Your Disney cruise packing list should exclude prohibited items like weapons, firearms, and marijuana products as these can pose safety hazards. Avoid overpacking; space in your stateroom is limited, and unnecessary items only add clutter. Leave behind valuables that you won’t need, as they might create worry rather than enjoyment. Remember, practicality is key when you are  packing for a Disney cruise . Streamlining your luggage by focusing on Disney cruise essentials ensures a hassle-free and enjoyable journey for the entire family. Something to take advantage of is the onboard laundry facility. There is a separate fee but it is less than paying for overweight baggage! Each wash and each dry is $3. There is also detergent available for $1. So just doing one load would only be $7!

Complete Disney Cruise Packing List – Everything You’ll Need on the High Seas

Sarah Gilliland

Disney cruises are incredible vacations. It’s like getting the best of both — a Disney Parks vacation and a cruise — all wrapped into one easy package.

However, unlike a Disney Parks vacation, what and how much you pack for a Disney Cruise will depend on your cruise itinerary and the length of your cruise. Sailing to Alaska for a week requires different clothes than a 5-day sail through the Caribbean.

And of course, there is limited space aboard the ship. Even the most spacious Concierge Suite on each cruise ship is still limited in size and storage space. I urge you to mix and match your attire as best you can to save room in your suitcase (and stateroom)!

Here we give you the details on everything you need on your Disney cruise packing list, and everything you should leave at home!

Disney Cruise Line Embarkation Day

The day you board your Disney cruise ship for the first time is called “Embarkation Day.” It requires a packing strategy all its own. That’s because you will be separated from your luggage for most of the day.

Here’s how it works:

When you get to the cruise terminal in Port Canaveral, Disney Cruise Line luggage handlers will take that heavy suitcase off your hands and deliver it straight to your cabin. (Just one of the ship terms you’ll want to learn before your cruise, a cabin or stateroom is cruise lingo for your room onboard.)

That’s the good part. The bad part: You don’t know what time you will see your suitcase again. It could be way past the kids’ bedtime before the bags show up.

That’s why it’s important to also pack a roll-aboard suitcase or day bag with a few necessities.

What to Pack for Embarkation Day

Depending on how early you board on Embarkation Day, you’ll have time to explore the ship and eat lunch before you will be invited to head to your stateroom. So you’ll want to have a few things with you.

These are items you must pack in the carry-on you will keep with you throughout the day:

  • Cruise and travel documents
  • Passport or birth certificate and government-issued ID
  • Prescription medications
  • Cash/credit cards
  • Unopened drinks or alcohol (more on this in a minute)

Next are some items that are nice to have with you, but not always necessary. The pools will be open when you arrive on board, but they can be crowded. On some previous cruises, we have gone to the pool. Other times we opted to forego the pool and spend the time exploring the ship. If you want the option to go to the pool, then move your swimsuits to the “must take” pile for your carry-on.

  • Sunglasses/hat
  • Swimsuit cover-up
  • Motion sickness medication (such as Sea Bands )
  • Portable charger
  • Reading material (books, magazines, Amazon Kindle)
  • Towel clips (these come in handy on the pool deck)
  • Lanyard (this is great for holding your Key to the World cruise card)

Disney Cruise Line Food and Beverage Policy

If you choose to bring food or drinks onto Disney cruise ships, they MUST go in your carry-on. DCL limits guests 21 and older to two bottles of unopened wine/champagne or six beers at the beginning of your sailing. Don’t forget your own corkscrew if you plan to open your wine in your stateroom!

Wine/champagne may be brought to the main dining rooms. There is a $25 corkage fee per bottle, and the Cast Members will store your bottle for you to drink each night at dinner.

As far as other food goes, the DCL website states that guests MAY BRING:

  • Nonperishable snack foods in sealed, original packaging. All items must either be consumed prior to returning to your home port or remain unopened.
  • Breast milk, in carry-on luggage only.
  • Coolers no larger than 12″ x 12″ x 12″, as carry-on luggage for storing medications, baby food or items related to dietary restrictions only.

One of the perks of sailing on a Disney cruise ship is that all sodas, coffees and teas are included in the cost of the cruise with meals and at the beverage stations. Bar drinks, beer, wine, smoothies, specialty coffees and bottled water are an additional charge.

Disney Gear to Pack

Next, let’s talk about the all-important Disney gear you will need to pack. The kids will want their princess dresses and every Disney cruise has a Pirate Night, so you’ll definitely want to pack your pirate best!

Plus, dressing up just ramps up the fun for everyone. Even adults can get into the act with some cute Mickey ears and Minnie-inspired polka dot dresses . Or make it a family affair with matching t-shirts for everyone! Check out Etsy for some really cute Disney cruise gear, from t-shirts to Disney cruise nail decals .

We’re Amazon Prime members, so one of our favorite places to get pirate gear is Amazon when we need the gear to arrive quickly. Amazon sells several pirate costumes , accessories and shirts. If you don’t wait until the last minute (like I do), shopDisney.com is also a great place to look for more official Disney pirate gear , but quick shipping will cost you extra.

Additionally, your children may wish to participate in the makeovers at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique or the Pirates League. Save yourself an extra expense by bringing a  princess dress or pirate costume from home for this experience.

Disney Door Magnets

These magical magnets are fun and also serve a real purpose: They can help you and the kids easily find your cabin door from among the loooooong hallway of cabin doors.

Mickey Ears with the name of each member of your family are a popular option. We even have a SheBuysTravel tutorial on how to make them with templates!

Just remember: Only magnets are allowed. No tape or glue of any kind can be used to adhere the decorations to your cabin door.

Do I Need Formal Clothes for a Disney Cruise?

Disney cruises are, for the most part, casual affairs. Sundresses or collared shirts are about as dressy as most people get and some will spend the entire week wearing t-shirts and shorts.

There are only two times when shorts and t-shirts won’t do: When dining at the adults-only restaurants, Remy and Palo. They have stricter (but not all that formal) dress codes. Shorts, capri pants, tank tops, swimsuits, swimsuit cover-ups, hats, cut-offs, torn clothing, t-shirts, flip-flops and tennis shoes are no-nos at Palo and Remy.

This restaurant, which offers dinner and brunch, requires the following:

  • Men : dress pants or slacks and a collared shirt; jacket is optional
  • Women : dress, skirt or pants with a blouse

Jeans may be worn if they are in good condition and have no holes.

This restaurant, which offers brunch, dessert and dinner on the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy only, is the most formal of all the Disney Cruise dining options. It requires the following:

Brunch & Dessert

  • Men : dress pants and a shirt are required; jacket optional
  • Women : a dress or pantsuit is required
  • Men : a jacket (sports, suit or tuxedo jacket) is required with dress pants/slacks and shoes; ties are optional
  • Women : Cocktail dress, evening dress, pantsuit or skirt/blouse are required

What Should I Pack for Castaway Cay?

A fan favorite stop on most Disney Cruise Line vacations is Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay.

A beautiful island in the Bahamas, Castaway Cay has so many great amenities, you won’t need to pack much in your beach bag . However, it is a long walk/tram ride from the ship to the beach area of the island, so you won’t want to go back and forth to your stateroom if you forgot something!

Castaway Cay supplies items such as swim goggles, snorkels, life vests and towels (so leave the towels in your stateroom).

Have everyone put on their swimsuits and cover-ups before you leave the ship and pack these things in your day bag for Castaway Cay:

  • Sunscreen/Sunglasses/Hat
  • Water shoes
  • Portable charger (outlets are not plentiful on the island)
  • Towel clips
  • Reading material
  • Dryer sheets (they magically remove sand from little bodies!)

Also consider bringing a refillable water bottle as it does get hot at Castaway Cay. There is food available (included in your cruise fare) as well as drink stations. But if you plan on spending the whole day at the beach, you won’t want to go back and forth from those areas to the beach every time someone gets thirsty.

What to Pack for Port Excursions

In addition to Castaway Cay, Disney cruises visit some amazing ports of call. Again, what you need to pack for port excursions will vary. For cruises to Alaska, packing a poncho is probably more important than packing multiple bathing suit choices. However, Caribbean cruises might call for more swimsuit options because putting on a wet swimsuit isn’t easy!

You will definitely want to bring along your beach bag or day bag to keep clothing or bathing suit options at your finger tips. Appropriate shoes for each activity are a must. Flip flops are great for the beach, but more adventurous excursions such as biking or zip lining, call for sturdier closed-toe shoes.

  • Hair dryer (available in your stateroom)
  • Pack and Play/Crib for baby (available onboard)

The Ultimate Disney Cruise Packing List + What To Wear

I f you are looking for the best packing list for a Disney Cruise you’re in the right place!

You have booked an unforgettable vacation on Disney Cruise Lines, and now you need to figure out what to wear on the cruise! It can vary depending on where your cruise is going and the season you are visiting.

What To Pack on a Disney Cruise and What To Wear On A Disney Cruise

A cruise to Alaska may make a warm coat a top packing item, while a cruise to the Caribbean will make swimsuits a top thing to put on your packing list. Pirate Night replaces the traditional formal night on Disney Cruise Lines with guests sporting their best pirate attire!

The magic of Disney Cruise Lines makes this the ideal family vacation. Whether it is your first disney cruise or 20th it always best to be prepared. Let’s dive into what to pack and wear for your upcoming Disney Cruise.

The links on this page are Amazon affiliate links. If you click on the links and make a purchase, I receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.

What To Wear On A Disney Cruise?

Consider the weather.

The first question to ask is, “What is the weather going to be like where I am going?” Disney offers a variety of cruises around the world so if you are opting for a Caribbean cruise vacation your packing list is going to vary from a family going on a European Cruise. I recommend googling the weather two weeks prior to your departure to get a feel for the climate during your trip.

Consider Your Excursions

Dressing for excursions outside of the ship always seems to be the hardest for me. I want to overpack the beach bag or backpack to bring more clothing, leaving little room for other necessities. The best advice I can give is to think about what you will be doing on your excursion and dress accordingly.

For beach excursions and water activities, I dress in my bathing suit, quick-drying shorts, and a tank top. I wear comfortable sandals and pack a cover-up. For walking tours, I typically dress in walking shoes, comfortable pants, t-shirt and pack a sweater.

Pack for shore excursions

Packing Tip: I always like to pack bottled water, hand sanitizer, sunscreen, and a small washcloth in my bag each time I leave the ship at a port of call. Don’t forget your cruise cards, credit cards, cash, and Photo ID.

Pirate Night

Pack your best eye patch and peg leg as you get ready for a swashbuckling night aboard the high seas. As evening falls, guests venture to dinner in their pirate best with many going out in full costumes for Pirate Night. That evening Disney hosts a Pirates of the Caribbean Deck Party which ends with a spectacular fireworks show.

Pirate Night

Planning Tip: Disney does not want anyone feeling left out so every guest has a souvenir pirate bandana in their stateroom that they can wear. Pirate gear is also for sale onboard the ships for top dollar.

Easy Pirate Ideas: Utilize the bandana Disney gives with black leggings and a white shirt, and add in some eye makeup. I bought this Women’s Pirate Accessory Kit and paired it with black leggings. Many guests just buy a few Pirate Accessories to jazz up outfits.

Around The Ship

One thing I love about Disney Cruises is that they are mostly casual dress for all events and dinners. When I wasn’t in my swimsuit lounging by the pool, I was in shorts and a Disney T-shirt. You will find that a good majority of guests will be out in shorts and Disney gear for meals and activities.

During dinner men are typically wearing shorts with a nice shirt and women are in causal dresses or shorts and a nice top. Disney attire is always welcome and I loved seeing the variety of Disney outfits that everyone wore. I have this cute Minnie-themed dress saved for next time!

Packing List for a DIsney Cruise

Kids will love dressing in their favorite princess dresses or superhero gear for dinner and meeting the characters. All throughout the ships, you will find little princesses and princes along with Marvel favorites such as Captain America and Spiderman.

Planning Tip: There is a more formal dress code at the adults-only restaurants, Palo and Remy. If you plan on dining at one of these restaurants it is best to wear pants and a collared shirt for men and a dress, skirt, or pants and a blouse for women.

Pro Tip: Dresses and costumes onboard are expensive. I recommend checking your second-hand children’s store for costumes. Especially look after Halloween for discounted costumes and dress-up gear! We packed a new dress for our daughter to wear to the bippity boppity boutique to prevent spending an extra $100 on a dress and $30 on shoes on the ship.

My Clothing Packing List For A Disney Cruise:

  • Tank tops and lightweight t-shirts. Disney shirts always add a little magic to the trip.
  • Swimsuit Cover-Up  (I particularly loved this black beach cover-up.)
  • 2-3 Swim Suits- That way you won’t have to wear wet swimsuits while the others dry.
  • A few pairs of shorts, capri pants, or casual dresses.
  • Pirate costume or accessories
  • A pair of  water shoes if you are doing an excursion such as river tubing, climbing waterfalls, or an adventure park.
  • A couple of pairs of pants or leggings if going to Europe or Alaska.
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Casual shoes or flats to wear to dinner
  • Hats, especially for kids.
  • A rash guard for kids since they will be spending a good amount of time in the sand and sun at ports of call.
  • Pack a set of fitness clothing.
  • A lightweight jacket or sweater. Bring one for everyone as the evenings can get cool or in air-conditioned spots.
  • Pack a pair of PJs.
  • Undies and Socks.
  • Accessories for outfits such as mouse ears, headbands, pirate night, etc.
  • A coat, hat, and gloves may be needed if going on an Alaskan Cruise.

Other Things You May Want To Wear On A Disney Cruise

  • If plan on using the fitness facility bring workout clothes and gym shoes.
  • Halloween on the High Seas has a costume night. If you are planning on dressing as something other than a pirate, be sure to bring a costume. Many guests double as pirates for both costume night and pirate night.
  • There is an optional dress-up night on cruises under 6 nights. There is a formal and semi-formal night on cruises over 7 days. Formal pictures are offered on the cruise if you wish to dress up and have a gorgeous professional photo taken.
  • Matching Mickey Shirts are always a crowd favorite!
  • Don’t forget to pack your Mouse Ears ! Many shops on Etsy have darling customizable ears.

What To Wear On A Disney Cruise

Packing For A Disney Cruise

While planning for your Disney Cruise, there is more to pack outside of your clothing and sunscreen. Coming prepared with the necessary documents, travel gear, and essential items will keep you from making a mad dash to the gift shop and paying higher prices for everyday items.

Putting together a travel plan can help in packing. Start by placing important items such as passports, government-issued ID, Disney Cruise Luggage tags, printed confirmations for hotels, transfers and cruise documentation, birth certificates, medical insurance, travel insurance, mobile phones, phone chargers, keys, money, credit cards, and wallets in a designated area in your carry-on baggage.

It is a good idea always to pack an extra pair of clothes, prescription medications, and contact lens/glasses in your carry-on as well in case your flight gets canceled or delayed.

When traveling to tropical destinations, I typically pack a swimsuit in my carry-on. In the event my luggage is lost, I have something to wear to the pool or beach.

Packing Tip: On embarkation day ensure you have a carry-on that has bathing suits for everyone and bedtime clothes for littles who go to bed early. While Disney tries their best to get your checked luggage to your room quickly, it can take awhile. Having a carry-on with necessities will be a life saver.

Planning Tip: When leaving the ship during port days, passengers are advised only to carry their driver’s license and Key To The World Card and leave their passports on the ship.

Currency To Bring On The Ship

Everything that you will be purchasing on the ship will be charged to your onboard account. Your Key To The World Card will act as a credit card onboard.

Tipping On A Disney Cruise

I recommend having a variety of bills available on hand for tipping. Disney Cruise Lines does charge each guest a set amount in tips per day, however, many guests will find that there are a few areas where having cash for additional tips is helpful.

  • Tipping the cast member who brings up a room service order.
  • There is no automatic gratuity at adult restaurants on a Disney cruise. However, you will most likely receive exceptional service at Palo and Remy. An additional 18% is the suggested starting point.
  • Tipping tour guides and having cash available for excursions.
  • Tipping the porters who help handle your luggage.

Guests will find envelopes in their stateroom on the final evening of their cruise with the opportunity to leave additional tips for your Server, Assistant Server, Head Server, and Room Steward. While it is not mandatory, many guests leave additional cash as the staff works extremely hard with long hours to make your vacation fabulous.

Planning Tip: Remember that 18 % gratuity is already added to spa services and 15% gratuity to bar purchases.

Vaccination Documentation

If there is one thing a pandemic has taught us is that things can change overnight. Ensure that you keep up to date on any vaccinations or testing protocols that may be required to get on the ship or country that you are visiting. As a safety precaution, we brought our vaccination cards with us, even though we didn’t need them for our November 2022 sailing.

I recommend checking the Disney Cruise Line policies and reading important emails they send you about any changing policies.

After packing your carry-on for travel, here is your general packing list for a Disney Cruise with a stop in Castaway Cay.

  • Sunscreen, but check to make sure it is reef safe.
  • Insect Repellent, bring if you are venturing out on a hike, a zip line adventure, or anything outside of water.
  • A beach bag
  • Water bottle
  • Bring an  Underwater Camera  if you plan on going snorkeling or doing fun activities that involve water. We have this particular waterproof camera, fell in love with it, and ended up buying all the extra accessories that come along with it.
  • First-Aid Kit
  • Wellness Kit: This includes Benadryl, Ibuprofen, Tylenol, stomach medications such as Pepto tabs and Pepcid, and decongestants. Epi-Pen if needed. If traveling with children ensure that you have medication for them such as children’s Tylenol and Ibuprofen.
  • Dramamine. I would pack this for adults and children. It is best to be prepared if sea sickness set in.
  • E-reader or tablet and charger
  • Portable Phone Charger
  • Toiletries such as shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant
  • Shaving Supplies
  • Hair products and accessories
  • Body Lotion
  • Aloe Vera in case of sunburn
  • Small travel towel
  • A  waterproof phone case  allows you to take your phone in the pool, the ocean, etc. You can also keep cruise card in it!
  • Pre-packaged snacks
  • Special occasion supplies such as anniversary gifts, birthday decorations, etc.

Packing Tip: The Cruise Line does offer shampoo, conditioner and soap in every stateroom for guests.

Extra Things To Put On Your Disney Cruise Packing List

Fish extenders.

Fish extenders (also known as FEs), are hanging gift bags, usually embroidered with the names of the family members traveling together, that are hung from small metal fish, used as mailboxes to receive information by the cabin stewards, located next to the cabin doors.

Disney Cruises families looking to participate in a fish extender gift exchange can reach out to other families on their cruise-specific Facebook Page or Disney board. Think of it as a secret Santa for fellow Disney-loving cruisers. You will need to sign up with a group so you get the room numbers of the families that you will need to surprise with a gift!

Gifts often are small in nature such as magnets, ornaments, etc. The Fish Extender group you join will have a limit and ideas on what to give. The beauty of the Fish Extender is that it is in no way organized by Disney. It is fellow cruisers making magical moments.

Personal Opinion: I felt that the fish extenders were just one additional thing to put on my to-do list. I didn’t have the space in our luggage to carry extra gifts so I opted to not participate. On the flip side, many guests love the surprise of getting fun trinkets throughout their cruise from fellow passengers.

Stateroom Door Decorations

Decorating your Disney Cruise stateroom door with Disney magnets is a long-time tradition on Disney Cruises. Many guests get personalized magnets with the cruise date and names of the guests in the room. You will see everything from Star Wars, and Marvel Comics to an array of Disney Movies themed doors.

Great Idea s: One family had a magnetic dry-erase board that the kids would indicate where they were going and leave messages. Consider using magnetic hooks as well to hang things from the door.

Get an autograph book

Autograph Ideas

A highlight of any Disney cruise is gathering all the signatures from the characters, including the infamous Captain Hook! I recommend getting an autograph book or an autograph photo mat to have the characters sign. Then print out the pictures of your family with the characters for a memorable souvenir.

You Can Bring Alcohol On Board

Disney Cruise Line Guests 21 years and older may bring a maximum of 2 bottles of unopened wine or champagne or 6 beers (no larger than 12 ounces) on board at the beginning of the voyage and at each port of call. These beverages must be packed in carry-on (not checked) bags or luggage.

Disney does charge a corking fee per bottle if you wish to consume wine or champagne in the dining room.

WHat to pack for kids on a disney cruise

What To Pack For Castaway Bay

Castaway Bay is Disney’s private island where many of the Caribbean sailings stop at. It is a great beach break with plenty of fun for the entire family. Keep in mind that there is a long walk from the ship to the beach. They do offer a tram but be sure you pack everything you need because you don’t want to make the trek back to the ship.

  • Bring a beach bag to carry all your beach supplies in.
  • Sunscreen/ Sunglasses
  • Disney Cruises provides beach towels for you to use.
  • Dryer sheets to get sand off of little ones!
  • Phone/Camera
  • Snorkel Gear. They do rent it on the island but you can bring your own. I wish I had gotten the full-face snorkel for my daughter since she struggled with the traditional snorkel gear.
  • Water shoes
  • Water Bottle
  • Pre-Packaged snacks. Disney does offer lunch on the island but kids are always hungry.

What NOT to Bring on a Disney Cruise

Ensure that you are not accidentally bringing anything on board that is not allowed by reading the complete list of prohibited cruise items .

A few items you do not need to bring are:

  • A pack-n-play/ crib for baby (They are available onboard)
  • A hairdryer (Available onboard)
  • Electric irons and Steamers (all ships offer self-service laundry facilities equipped with irons and ironing boards)
  • Bottle sterilizers and warmers (A limited number of approved bottle warmers and bottle sterilizers are available upon request through Guest Services)
  • Store-bought Light sabers
  • Plastic toy ‘pirate’ swords
  • Plastic store-bought toy “Mjolnir” hammers (Thor’s hammer)
  • Homemade food or snacks
  • Balloons and candles
  • Extension cords, power strips and surge protectors
  • Inflatable Mattresses
  • Metal Detectors
  • Over-the-door hanging organizers

Note: The following electrical appliances will be collected for inspection by the Chief Electrician and if approved, will be returned for use onboard the ship.

  • Baby Monitors
  • Humidifiers
  • Portable fans
  • White Noise/Sleep Machine

We had our sound machine taken apart and given back to us. I recommend downloading a sound machine app on your phone to avoid this situation altogether.

Disney Cruise Packing List

 essential documents and necessities.

This section might be the most important section of the Disney Cruise Packing List! Make sure you don’t skip it!

  Passports, Identification, and Travel Documents

Before you embark on your Disney Cruise, ensuring you have all the necessary identification and travel documents is crucial. For international cruises, a valid passport is helpful. Sometimes you can use a birth certificate but double-check to ensure you have all the documents you need for your Disney Cruise. Even if your cruise remains within your home country, having a passport is still advisable as it is a universally accepted form of identification.

Double-check the expiration date on your passport and ensure it remains valid for at least six months beyond your planned return date. Some countries have specific entry requirements, so having a valid passport is essential for a smooth sailing experience.

In addition to your passport, bring a government-issued photo ID (such as a driver’s license) for domestic cruises and any other identification documents you might need during your journey.

You’ll also want to ensure you have your credit cards and any cash you need. Pack them in a safe place where you’ll easily be able to find them. Please make sure the bag you put them in will be with you at all times.

Disney Cruise Line Reservation Confirmation and Other Paperwork

Print out all the necessary paperwork for your Disney Cruise reservation and keep it in a safe and easily accessible place. This includes your cruise tickets, booking confirmations, and any pre-purchased shore excursions or special event tickets.

Having physical copies of these documents can be helpful in case of any unexpected technological glitches or connectivity issues. However, you can also store digital copies on your smartphone or other electronic devices as a backup.

Important Contact Numbers and Emergency Information

Before setting sail, make a list of important contact numbers and emergency information. This list should include:

  • Disney Cruise Line contact number: This will be essential for any last-minute inquiries or changes before or during the cruise.
  • Emergency contact information: Share your cruise itinerary and ship details with a trusted friend or family member who will not be joining you on the trip. This way, they can be reached in case of an emergency.
  • Important phone numbers for credit card companies or banks: Notify your financial institutions about your travel plans to avoid any issues with your cards while onboard or during excursions.
  • Medical information: If you have any allergies or medical conditions or require specific medications, it’s vital to always carry this information with you. Additionally, familiarize yourself with the ship’s medical facilities and procedures.

Clothing and Attire

When it comes to clothing for your Disney Cruise packing list, versatility is key. You’ll want to be prepared for a range of activities, from exploring the ship to dining at upscale restaurants and attending themed events. Let’s dive into the essential clothing items you should pack for a magical and stylish voyage:

Casual Daywear for Exploring the Ship and Excursions

During the day, you’ll likely be busy exploring the various amenities of the ship and participating in exciting excursions at port destinations. Comfortable and casual clothing is essential for these activities. Here are some must-have items:

  • T-shirts and Tank Tops:  Pack a variety of lightweight and breathable tops that you can mix and match throughout the trip.
  • Shorts and Skirts:  Opt for comfortable shorts or skirts for warm-weather destinations. For cooler climates, consider packing a pair of lightweight pants.
  • Cover-Ups and Sarongs:  These are useful for heading to the pool or beach and can double as a quick cover-up over swimwear.
  • Sun Hat and Sunglasses:  Protect yourself from the sun with a wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses.
  • Light Jacket or Sweater:  Even in warm regions, evenings at sea can get breezy, so a light jacket or sweater is handy.
  • Rain Gear:  If your cruise takes you to a region with unpredictable weather, consider packing a compact rain jacket or poncho.

  Swimwear and Beachwear Essentials

For fun-filled days by the pool or at tropical beaches, make sure to pack the following swimwear and beach essentials:

  • Swimsuits:  Pack a couple of swimsuits so you have a dry one to wear while the other is drying.
  • Flip-Flops or Sandals:  Easy-to-wear footwear for poolside lounging and beach outings.
  • Beach Bag:  Carry a spacious, waterproof beach bag to hold your towels, sunscreen, and other necessities.
  • Beach Towels:  While Disney Cruise Line provides towels for onboard use, you’ll need to bring your own for excursions.

Semi-Formal and Formal Attire for Themed Nights and Fine Dining

Disney Cruises offer themed nights and elegant dining experiences, allowing you to dress up and create magical memories. Some cruises no longer host a formal night and have eliminated the dress code at most restaurants, so you may not need formal clothes. It’s best to check with your specific ship to see if they’ll be hosting a formal night. Be sure to pack the following semi-formal and formal attire:

  • Cocktail Dresses and Dress Shirts:  Ladies, bring a stylish cocktail dress or dressy outfit. Gentlemen, pack dress shirts and ties.
  • Semi-Formal Shoes:  Comfortable heels or dress shoes for ladies and dress shoes for gentlemen.
  • Formal Attire:  Consider packing an evening gown or tuxedo for formal nights.

Recommendations for Themed Costume Nights and Character Meet-and-Greets

disney cruise ship packing list

Disney Cruises often include themed nights, such as pirate nights or Disney-themed costume parties. Embrace the spirit of these events with the following items:

  • Pirate Night Outfits:  Eye patches, pirate hats, and bandanas for a swashbuckling good time.
  • Disney-Themed Costumes:  Get creative and pack costumes inspired by your favorite Disney characters.
  • Autograph Books and Markers:  Have a designated autograph book ready for character meet-and-greets.

Lightweight and Comfortable Shoes for Various Activities

The proper footwear is essential for exploring the ship, participating in shore excursions, and enjoying various onboard activities. Pack the following types of shoes:

  • Comfortable Walking Shoes:  Sneakers or walking shoes are essential for excursions and exploring ports.
  • Sandals or Flip-Flops:  Lightweight and comfortable footwear for casual days onboard.
  • Dress Shoes:  For formal nights and themed events that require a more polished look.

 Disney-Themed Accessories and Gear

As you set sail on your Disney Cruise, why not add a touch of enchantment and show off your Disney spirit with some magical accessories and gear? Here are some delightful Disney-themed items that will elevate your cruise experience to a whole new level of fun and excitement:

Packing Ears: A Must-Have for Every Disney Enthusiast

disney cruise ship packing list

No Disney vacation is complete without a pair of iconic Mickey or Minnie ears! Whether it’s the classic black ears with a red bow or a pair inspired by your favorite Disney character, wearing ears is a tradition that Disney fans of all ages embrace. Not only do they add a touch of whimsy to your outfits, but they also make for fabulous photos with your favorite characters. My favorite ear shop on ETSY is Alli’s Ears ! She makes most of my ears and made me a few pairs of ears just for my Disney Cruise! Use my code MIXINMAGIC15 for 15% off!

Disney-Themed Apparel and Accessories for a Touch of Magic

Pack a selection of Disney-themed clothing and accessories to showcase your love for all things Disney throughout your cruise:

  • Disney T-shirts and Hoodies:  Choose from T-shirts featuring beloved characters, iconic quotes, or Disney Cruise Line logos. Remember a cozy hoodie for more relaxed evenings at sea.
  • Disney Hats and Caps:  Shield yourself from the sun with a Disney baseball cap or a cute Minnie Mouse sun hat.
  • Disney Bags and Backpacks:  Opt for bags adorned with Disney characters or cruise-themed designs to carry your essentials during excursions and activities.
  • Disney Jewelry:  Add a touch of elegance to your cruise outfits with Disney-themed necklaces, bracelets, or earrings.

Autograph Books and Markers for Character Signatures

Meeting Disney characters is a highlight of any Disney Cruise, especially for the little ones (and the young at heart!). Be sure to pack autograph books and markers to collect signatures from your favorite characters. It’s a fantastic keepsake to cherish long after the cruise is over. Some fun options include character-themed autograph books that make the experience even more magical.

Disney Pins and Lanyards for Pin Trading Fun

Pin trading is a beloved tradition among Disney fans, and it’s no different on a Disney Cruise. Bring a selection of Disney pins to trade with crew members and fellow cruisers. It’s a fantastic way to interact with others and expand your pin collection. Don’t forget to display your pins on a lanyard so they’re easily accessible during your cruise.

Sun Protection and Beach Day Must-Haves

As you embark on your Disney Cruise, you’ll likely enjoy sunny days by the pool and beautiful beach excursions. To ensure you have a safe and enjoyable time under the sun, it’s crucial to pack the proper sun protection and beach essentials. Here’s what you need to make the most of your beach days and bask in the glorious sunshine:

Sunscreen with High SPF and Broad-Spectrum Coverage

Packing for a Disney Cruise isn’t complete without sunscreen! Sunscreen is your best friend when it comes to protecting your skin from harmful UV rays. Choose a high SPF sunscreen (at least SPF 30) that offers broad-spectrum coverage to shield you from UVA and UVB rays. I prefer  mineral-based sunscreen  because it protects my sensitive skin better. Apply sunscreen liberally and frequently, especially after swimming or sweating.

Sunglasses, Hats, and Other Sun Protection Gear

In addition to sunscreen, it’s essential to wear sun protection gear to safeguard your eyes, face, and head from the sun’s rays. Pack the following items:

  • Sunglasses:  Invest in good sunglasses with UV protection to shield your eyes from the bright sunlight.
  • Hats and Visors:  Wide-brimmed hats or visors are excellent for shading your face and neck from direct sunlight.
  • Lightweight Cover-Ups:  Long-sleeved cover-ups made from lightweight, breathable fabrics can provide extra protection over your bathing suit when not in the water.

Beach Towels and Portable Chairs for Shore Excursions

Having a comfortable spot to relax is essential for beach days during shore excursions. While Disney Cruise Line provides towels onboard the ship, you’ll need to bring your own for beach excursions. Consider packing lightweight, quick-drying beach towels that won’t take up much space in your bag.

In addition to towels, portable beach chairs or loungers are a fantastic addition to your beach day must-haves. Look for collapsible chairs that are easy to carry and set up at the beach. Having your own chair ensures a comfortable place to relax, especially in popular beach destinations.

Waterproof Phone Pouches or Camera Bags for Beach Activities

Preserving your electronic devices while enjoying beach activities is crucial. Invest in  waterproof phone pouches  or camera bags to protect your smartphone, camera, or other gadgets from sand and water. This way, you can capture stunning beach photos and videos without worry.

Waterproof pouches  also come in handy during water-based excursions, such as snorkeling or water sports, allowing you to keep your phone close by while protecting it from potential splashes or accidental drops.

 Gadgets and Electronics

In the digital age, gadgets, and electronics play a significant role in enhancing our travel experiences. On your Disney Cruise, these technological companions can capture magical moments, keep you connected, and provide entertainment throughout your journey. Make sure these things are included in your Disney Cruise packing list! Here are some essential gadgets and electronics to pack for an even more enchanted cruise:

Camera or Smartphone for Capturing Magical Moments

This probably goes without saying, but you need a camera on your Disney Cruise packing list! Preserving the precious memories of your Disney Cruise is a must, and a camera or smartphone is the perfect tool for the job. Whether you’re capturing character meet-and-greets, onboard entertainment, or breathtaking views at the ports of call, having a camera ensures you’ll have a treasure trove of photos and videos to cherish long after the cruise.

Smartphones with high-quality cameras are incredibly versatile and convenient, making them popular for capturing moments on the go. To maximize your smartphone’s camera capabilities, consider bringing external lenses, a tripod for stable shots, and a selfie stick for group photos.

Power Banks and Portable Charger to Stay Connected Throughout the Cruise

Staying connected during your cruise is essential for various reasons, whether to keep in touch with loved ones, access useful apps, or enjoy your gadgets without worrying about a dying battery. Here’s what to consider:

  • Power Banks :  Invest in a good-quality power bank to recharge your devices while on the go. Opt for one with multiple USB ports and enough capacity to charge your devices several times.
  • Chargers and Cables:  Don’t forget to pack all the necessary chargers and cables for your gadgets, including your phone, camera, tablets, and any other electronics you plan to bring.

  Travel Adapters for International Cruises

Remember to add  travel adapters  to your Disney Cruise packing list for international cruises to ensure your gadgets can be plugged into foreign electrical outlets. Different countries have varying plug shapes and voltages, so having the appropriate travel adapters will keep your devices charged and ready to use no matter where your Disney Cruise takes you.

 Medications and First Aid Supplies

While a Disney Cruise promises a magical and enchanting experience, it’s essential to prioritize your health and well-being throughout the journey. Packing the proper medications and first aid supplies ensures you’re prepared for minor health concerns during the cruise. Here are the essential items to include in your travel medicine kit:

Personal Medications with Proper Labels and Documentation

If you take any prescription medications, ensure you have an adequate supply for the entire duration of your cruise, plus a few extra days in case of unexpected delays. It’s essential to keep these medications in their original containers with clear labels showing your name, the medication name, dosage instructions, and prescribing doctor’s information.

Motion Sickness Remedies for Smoother Sailing

While Disney Cruise ships are equipped with stabilizers to minimize motion, some individuals may still experience seasickness, especially during rough weather or when sailing through open waters. Be prepared with motion sickness remedies to ensure a smoother and more enjoyable voyage:

  • Over-the-Counter Medications:  Consider packing motion sickness medications like Meclizine or Dramamine.
  • Motion Sickness Bands:  Acupressure bands that apply pressure to specific points on your wrists may also help alleviate motion sickness symptoms.
  • Motion Sickness Patches:  Motion Sickness patches are an excellent way for many guests to stave off motion sickness.

Basic First Aid Kit for Minor Injuries and Ailments

A well-stocked first aid kit can come to the rescue for minor injuries and ailments that may occur during your cruise. Here’s what to include:

  • Adhesive Bandages:  Assorted sizes to cover cuts and blisters.
  • Antiseptic Wipes or Solution:  To clean wounds and prevent infection.
  • Pain Relievers:  Over-the-counter pain medications like ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
  • Antihistamines:  For allergic reactions or minor allergic symptoms.
  • Hydrocortisone Cream:  To relieve itching from insect bites or skin irritations.
  • Digital Thermometer:  For monitoring body temperature.
  • Medicated Ointment:  For minor burns or skin irritations.

Disney Cruise Packing List Miscellaneous Essentials

Adding some of these miscellaneous items to your Disney cruise packing list will enhance your comfort, convenience, and overall experience throughout the journey. These essentials are the little things that can make a big difference in ensuring your cruise is nothing short of magical. Let’s explore some must-have miscellaneous items:

 Reusable Water Bottle

Staying hydrated is crucial during your cruise, especially when exploring the ship or participating in shore excursions. Bring along reusable water bottles for each member of your travel party. Disney Cruise Line provides complimentary water at various stations onboard, so you can easily refill your bottles throughout the day.

Power Strips  and  Extension Cord

There won’t be nearly enough outlets in your Disney Cruise stateroom. I promise that you will need more than is offered! Bring a power strip and extension cords; you’ll be happy that you did!

Waterproof Bags  or Pouches for Wet Items

Whether heading to the pool, beach or enjoying water-based excursions, having waterproof bags or pouches is essential for keeping your belongings safe and dry. These bags are perfect for storing a wet swimsuit, towels, and water-resistant gadgets like waterproof phone pouches or camera bags.

  Travel-Size Laundry Detergent

Disney Cruise Line offers convenient laundry facilities for guests during the cruise. Pack some travel-size laundry detergent or laundry pods to keep your clothes fresh and clean. This way, you can easily do light laundry throughout the trip and pack fewer clothes, especially on an extended voyage.

Digital Clock(Battery Powered)

You won’t find any clocks inside Disney cruise line ships. I like to bring my own so I can easily keep track of time, especially in the middle of the night!

Shoe Organizer

There’s not a lot of storage space in the bathrooms on a Disney Cruise. Many guests like to bring an over-the-door shoe organizer to hang up in the bathroom to hold their toiletries in an easy-to-access space.

Princess Dress

If your child is visiting the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique on your upcoming Disney cruise, consider princess dress from home to your Disney Cruise packing list. They can change into it before there appointment.

Essentials For Your Bag On Embarkation Day

The excitement of embarking on a new journey is palpable, but there’s one minor inconvenience that most travelers face: waiting for their luggage to be delivered to their state rooms. It’s common for checked bags to take some time to reach your room. To ensure a smooth and enjoyable first day of your trip, it’s essential to pack a well-prepared bag with all the necessities you’ll need until your main luggage arrives. Add these things to your Disney cruise packing list:

1. Travel Documents:  First and foremost, ensure you have all your essential travel documents in your bag. These may include your passport, ID, travel itinerary, boarding passes (if you’re on a flight), hotel or cruise confirmation, and any necessary visas or travel permits. Keeping these documents close will help ease any last-minute travel anxieties and make the check-in process a breeze.

2. Change of Clothes:  While waiting for your luggage to arrive, having a change of clothes is a game-changer. Pack a set of comfortable attire suitable for the weather and the activities you plan to undertake on your first day. You might want your swimming suit so you can head right to the pool!

3. Toiletries:  Toiletries are essential to freshen up after a long journey. Include a toothbrush, toothpaste, travel-sized shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and facial wipes. You’ll feel rejuvenated and ready to explore without relying on what the hotel or cruise ship may provide.

4. Medications and Personal Care:  If you take any prescription medications, pack them in your bag. Also, bring a small first-aid kit with band-aids, pain relievers, antacids, and any other personal care items you might need.

5. Electronics and Chargers:  Keep your essential electronics, such as your phone, camera, and any necessary chargers, in your bag. Capturing the first moments of your trip and staying connected is crucial for creating lasting memories and ensuring convenience.

6. Sunscreen and Sun Protection:  Sun protection is a must if you’re heading to a sunny destination. Carry a travel-sized sunscreen with an adequate SPF to shield your skin from harmful UV rays. Remember to pack sunglasses and a hat to protect yourself from the sun’s glare.

 Packing Tips and Organization

Now that we’ve covered everything you should have on your Disney Cruise packing list, let’s talk about a few packing tips. Packing efficiently and staying organized can make a difference during your Disney Cruise. From maximizing suitcase space to quickly locating your belongings, a little planning can lead to a stress-free and enjoyable vacation. Let’s dive into some essential packing tips and organization strategies that will ensure you have everything you need at your fingertips:

Rolling vs. Folding Clothes: Pros and Cons

When it comes to packing clothes, the age-old debate between rolling and folding continues. Both methods have their advantages, so consider these pros and cons to decide what works best for you:

Rolling Clothes:

  • Pros: Rolling clothes can save space and reduce wrinkles. Rolled garments are easy to stack and access in your suitcase, making them convenient for grab-and-go situations.
  • Cons: Bulkier items, like jeans and sweaters, may be more challenging to roll neatly.

Folding Clothes:

  • Pros: Folding clothes may work better for dressier attire and structured fabrics. It keeps clothes neatly stacked and wrinkle-free.
  • Cons: Folding can be more time-consuming, and tightly packed folded clothes might take up more space.

A combination of both techniques can be effective. For example, roll casual items like T-shirts and fold dressier outfits to balance space-saving and wrinkle prevention.

Utilizing Packing Cubes for Better Organization

Packing cubes  are a game-changer for staying organized during your cruise. These lightweight and compact zippered bags come in various sizes and can help you categorize and separate different types of clothing and accessories. Consider using packing cubes for:

  • Separating tops, bottoms, and undergarments.
  • Organizing swimwear, beachwear, and accessories.
  • Keeping kids’ clothes or specific outfits together.

Packing cubes keep your suitcase tidy and make it easier to find specific items without rummaging through everything.

Bonus Tips for a Magical Disney Cruise Experience

disney cruise ship packing list

I know this post is about a Disney Cruise packing list, but here are some bonus tips to ensure an unforgettable and magical experience. From planning your activities to embracing the onboard entertainment, these tips will help you make the most of every moment:

Booking Shore Excursions and Activities in Advance

Disney Cruise Line offers a variety of exciting shore excursions and activities at each port of call. Consider booking in advance to secure your spot in popular tours and experiences. Keep an eye on the cruise line’s website or app for the opening of excursion reservations.

Whether exploring ancient ruins, snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, or enjoying a thrilling zip line adventure, booking in advance ensures you will experience the activities that interest you the most.

Understanding Disney Cruise Line’s Dining Options and Rotational Dining

Disney Cruise Line’s rotational dining is a unique and delightful experience. Throughout your cruise, you’ll have the opportunity to dine at different themed restaurants, and your serving team will rotate with you, providing personalized service each night.

Take the time to familiarize yourself with the dining schedule and menu options. If you have any special dietary requests, inform the cruise line to accommodate your needs.

Participating in Onboard Activities and Entertainment

Your Disney Cruise is not just a means of transportation; it’s a destination in itself. Embrace the onboard activities and entertainment options, from deck parties and live shows to character meet-and-greets and family-friendly games.

Check the daily cruise newsletter, the Personal Navigator, for a schedule of events and activities. Plan your days to include a mix of thrilling experiences and relaxing downtime so that you can make the most of every magical moment onboard.

Taking Advantage of Photo Opportunities with Disney Characters

Meeting beloved Disney characters is a highlight of any Disney Cruise. Take advantage of photo opportunities at various character meet-and-greet locations throughout the ship. Bring your autograph book, camera, or smartphone to capture these magical interactions.

For an extra unique experience, consider attending ticketed character events or character breakfasts to enjoy more one-on-one time with your favorite Disney friends.

Making the Most of Castaway Cay, Disney’s Private Island Paradise

A Disney Cruise isn’t complete without a visit to Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island paradise in the Bahamas. Explore the island’s pristine beaches, embark on exciting water sports, or relax in a hammock with the sound of waves lapping nearby.

Be sure to book the Castaway Cay 5K run in advance if you want active fun on the island. Enjoy the complimentary beach barbecue and explore the family and adult-exclusive areas for a well-rounded experience.

Decorating Your Stateroom Door on a Disney Cruise

One way to make your voyage even more special is by customizing your stateroom door with delightful decorations that showcase your family’s unique style and Disney spirit. In this section, we’ll explore the joys of decorating your stateroom door and share some creative ideas to help you get started. Add door decorations to your Disney Cruise packing list if this interests you.

Why Decorate Your Stateroom Door?

Decorating your stateroom door on a Disney cruise is a time-honored tradition, and it’s easy to see why so many guests participate. Here are some compelling reasons why you should consider adorning your door:

1. Personalization:  Your stateroom door is like a blank canvas that allows you to showcase your family’s personality, interests, and celebration themes. It makes your door stand out in the long hallways and adds a touch of home during your voyage.

2. Festive Spirit:  Disney cruises are all about celebrating and decorating your door, setting the tone for a fun-filled vacation right from the start. The vibrant and creative door decorations create an atmosphere of joy and excitement.

3. Wayfinding:  When you deck out your door with distinctive decorations, it becomes much easier to locate your stateroom, especially in the vast sea of doors along the corridors.

4. Social Interaction:  Your door decorations can be a conversation starter with other guests. You might make new friends or find fellow cruisers with similar tastes or interests.

Tips for Decorating Your Stateroom Door

Now that you’re ready to embark on your door-decorating adventure, here are some practical tips to make your stateroom door truly shine:

1. Magnetic Decorations:  Stateroom doors on Disney cruises are metal, which means you can use magnetic decorations. Stock up on fun and colorful magnets, including Disney characters, cruise-themed designs, and any other appealing personalized items. Magnetic hooks are a great idea!

2. Avoid Damage:  Remember that you should not use adhesives or tape that could damage the door’s surface. Magnetic decorations are the way to go to ensure a damage-free experience.

3. Embrace the Theme:  Get creative and incorporate the Disney theme into your decorations. Whether you’re a fan of Mickey Mouse, princesses, pirates, or Star Wars, there’s a vast array of themed decorations to suit your preferences.

4. DIY Crafts:  Consider making your decorations to add a personal touch. Get the whole family involved in crafting fun and memorable door ornaments that reflect your unique style.

5. Celebrate Special Occasions:  If you’re cruising to celebrate a special event, such as a birthday, anniversary, or engagement, tailor your decorations to match the occasion. Disney offers celebration packages that include door decorations, so be sure to check those out.

6. Respect Others:  Remember to be mindful of your fellow cruisers when decorating your door. Avoid blocking cabin numbers, peepholes, or any important signage on the door. Also, don’t use noisy decorations that could disturb your neighbors.

Disney Cruise Packing List: 11 Items You Must Bring

Published by Elizabeth Morgan

Is your long-awaited Disney Cruise adventure only a few weeks away? If it is, then you’ve probably started thinking about what to pack.

Well, you’ve come to the right place! We’ve compiled the ultimate Disney cruise packing list for you.

This list is helpful for anyone going on a Disney Cruise line vacation, but especially if it’s your first Disney cruise.

The essentials to pack for Disney cruises include swimwear, sunglasses, credit cards, and footwear for each occasion.

Other things to consider are a multi-port charger and a Disney costume for younger family members.

Having an old gift card and your personal toiletries with you is also a plus. Read on to learn more about the items you should pack for your Disney cruise adventure.

disney cruise ship

1. Motion Sickness Medication

If you get seasick or are worried you will, then definitely remember to pack some motion sickness medication, whether it’s pills or patches.

You’ll obviously be on a ship in the ocean for a few days and you don’t want to be sick and miserable that whole time. You should be able to buy some onboard the ship if you forget or run out though.

2. A Couple of Books

stack of four books

While your Disney cruise adventure will definitely be packed with action and fun, there will inevitably be some downtime.

This is where the reading material you have with you will come in handy.

Make sure to pack a couple of classic Disney fairy tales for your kids to help them get into the magical spirit too!

If you don’t want the extra weight in your bags, you can always download a few books on your Kindle or iPad.

3. Sunglasses and Sunscreen

Let’s face it, you haven’t spent all that money on a Disney cruise to stay cooped up in your stateroom all day.

You’re going to be spending a lot of time on the deck enjoying the many activities that Disney cruise ships have to offer.

This means that you’ll be spending plenty of time in the sun. In turn, you should make sure to pack sunscreen. We also recommend that you pack two pairs of sunglasses in case one gets damaged or lost.

That way, you can enjoy the sunlight without risking  sunburn  or hurting your eyes.

4. Swimwear

Throughout your Disney cruise, you’ll be doing a lot of swimming.

Therefore, packing a pair of swim trunks or a bathing suit for your trip is a must-do.

We recommend that you have an extra pair on hand too so that you always have something dry to put on.

Additionally, don’t forget to pack cover-up clothing to put on when you’re chilling poolside.

5. Shoes For Every Occasion

Let’s get one thing straight from the get-go. We aren’t saying you should take every pair of shoes you own. In fact, we advise against that.

However, only one pair of shoes is also not enough.

From our experience, the sweet spot is three pairs of shoes. We recommend a pair of sneakers, a pair of dress shoes, and a pair of flip flops or slides.

If you have this trio of footwear, you’ll be ready for every occasion you could find on your Disney cruise.

6. Personal Toiletries

bag of toiletries

Although your room on the Disney cruise ship will be equipped with the essentials, there are still plenty of personal toiletries that you’ll need to bring yourself.

The toiletries you’ll find available in your room will typically be lotion, shampoo, and conditioner.

Here are some other essential toiletries you should remember to pack:

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Hairbrush and comb
  • Razor or shaving machine
  • Feminine hygiene products

Make sure to pack the medication that you or your family members may need during the cruise. In the case of medicines, keep them in your carry-on bag to avoid losing them if your luggage is misplaced.

7. A Disney Costume For Your Child

If you’re taking your child with you, it’s a great idea to pack a costume of their favorite Disney character. The look on your child’s face when you surprise them with it on the ship will be priceless!

You can even go the extra mile and get a matching costume for yourself.

Don’t forget to book an appointment at the  Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique  and watch your child get transformed into a royal prince or princess!

You could also consider a pirate costume for your child to wear on Pirate night!

There are also other themed nights on Disney Cruises that you may want costumes or accessories for, like Merrytime Christmas, Star Wars, and Halloween on the High Seas.

8. Multi-Port Charger

USB Wall Charger, Hootek 2Pack Wall Plug 3-Port USB Charging

Your room on the Disney cruise ship is unlikely to have any more than three power outlets.

If you and your roommate each have several devices with you, these outlets simply won’t be enough to charge them all every night.

This is where a multi port charger will come in handy. It’ll ensure that there’s enough space for everyone to charge their phones, laptops, and other electronics.

9. Backpack

girl wearing a backpack

Your typical day onboard the Disney cruise ship will involve plenty of roaming around.

These ships are quite large, so it would be inconvenient to rush back to your room each time you need one of your belongings.

In turn, having a spacious backpack with you is a great idea.

You can stow in it all of the essential items you’ll need throughout the day and have them on hand at a moment’s notice.

It’s also good to have a backpack with you as a day bag for embarkation day since you don’t get your luggage right away.

You can also use your backpack as a beach bag when you go to Castaway Cay.

10. Laundry Pods/Detergent

Instead of packing a bunch of clothes for your trip, you can do your laundry onboard and always have a clean outfit available.

All Disney cruise ships have laundry facilities for passengers to use. These facilities aren’t a free Disney service, but the cost is minimal.

If you want to make use of these nifty amenities, make sure to bring some laundry pods or detergent with you.

11. Formal Clothes

Every Disney cruise has a formal night where you dress up and go to dinner in one of the main dining rooms. You’ll want a formal outfit like dress pants or a dress to wear to it.

Depending on the length of your cruise there can be multiple formal nights during your vacation.

You can contact Disney Cruise Line ahead of time to see how many formal nights your trip will have.

There are certain items you can’t forget to add to your Disney cruise packing list .

These items include swimwear, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a backpack. You’ll also want to pack suitable footwear and any personal toiletries you may need.

The most important thing to remember to pack is your appetite for fun. That’s because you’ll have tons of it on your Disney adventure!

I hope these travel tips help you prepare for your amazing Disney vacation!

2024 Disney Cruise Packing List: Essentials to Pack & What Not to Bring

Disney Cruise Packing List

If you have ever been on a Disney Parks vacation before, you know there are essentials that you must pack no matter what. The same goes for a Disney cruise which is why a Disney cruise packing list is important. The essentials though are going to be slightly different because it is a different type of vacation with vastly different activities.

Going on any Disney vacation is exciting, but a Disney cruise has to be at the top of the list for vacations. Not only do you get a relaxing and remote vacation, but everything is Disney-fied! It really is the best of both worlds, especially if you are traveling with people who like Disney but not the stress that comes with the theme parks. You can see our Disney World vs. Disney Cruise guide for a full comparison if you are deciding how you'd like to spend your next vacation.

The other difference is that at Disney parks, most of the time you are dressing for comfort in the heat and walkability in your footwear. When embarking on your Disney cruise, you could be spending four days going to the Caribbean or a two-week-long Alaskan adventure. These two cruises are going to require many different items for you to be comfortable which we all list on our Disney Cruise packing list. Through our Disney Cruise packing list, we will try to be inclusive of all cruise needs as well as address what you may need for specific locations.

In this planning guide:

Disney Cruise Packing List- Boarding Day

disney cruise line boarding day

Boarding the cruise ship is better known as “Embarkation Day,” and many first-time cruisers don’t know or underestimate the items they need for the day for their Disney Cruise packing list.

When you get to the cruise terminal, Disney Cruise Line luggage handlers will load your luggage for you onto the boat and into your cabin or stateroom (this is your “hotel” room on the ship). While this is great because you don’t have to worry about boarding the boat with it, it also means you will be away from your belongings for most of the day. It could be late into the day by the time the crew members actually deliver your belongings.

When you board the cruise, there are many activities you can participate in that will help determine what you need for the day. Guests can eat, explore the ship, go swimming, attend welcome activities, and visit your room.

It is incredibly important when packing for your cruise that you make sure you have a bag packed with all the necessities for the first day that you won't check. We particularly like a backpack or day bag like this one as it squishes down to save space to carry with you. Not to worry though because we have you covered with the essentials you need.

Boarding Day Disney Cruise Packing List

Must have items:

  • Cruise and travel documents
  • Passport or birth certificate and government-issued ID

What to Wear on Disney Cruise

Disney Cruise Line Packing List Alaska

Living on a cruise ship for 4-10 days can have you questioning, what clothes should I pack for my Disney Cruise?

Disney Cruise Line suggests that guests should pack clothing that will allow them to dress comfortably for vacation. Guests should also bring the appropriate attire for dinners and Port Adventures.

A lot of the clothing that you will pack is going to depend upon your destination. If you are cruising somewhere warm, then shorts, t-shirts, and dresses will probably make up most of your wardrobe. If you are cruising somewhere colder, then jeans, sweatshirts, and jackets may be the go-to. We also always end up doing some workout during the sailing to burn off the endless good food that you can enjoy while onboard. Here's a look at the workout facility onboard the Disney Wonder ship.

disney wonder work out room

Disney Cruise Line pools are all heated, so a bathing suit is recommended no matter which cruise destination you are sailing to. You may want to pack more than one bathing suit if you are going to a warmer destination and have water excursions planned.

Generally for Disney Cruise Line we recommend the same thing that we do for all Disney vacations – wear clothes that are comfortable but nice looking. Throughout your trip you'll want to be capturing photos and making memories. By no means are we saying to wear a collar the whole time, but maybe leave the t-shirt with the holes in it at home. You will be seen by hundreds of other people on the ship each day and have photos from this trip forever.

Below we dive into more of what you should wear on a Disney Cruise for the various activities on the ship and off.

Disney Cruise Line Dining

When dining on a Disney Cruise, there are multiple dining experiences that each have their own dress code. Also, depending on the length of the cruise there can be specialty dining events.

Before packing, make sure to check what dining experiences you have booked to ensure you have the right level of dress.

3-night cruises:

One cruise casual night One pirate night themed deck party One optional “dress-up night”

4-night cruises:

First night is cruise casual One pirate night themed deck party One optional dress-up night Final night is cruise casual

7-night cruises:

First night is cruise casual One pirate night or other themed deck party 3 additional cruise casual nights One formal and one semi-formal night

Typically we will wear the same clothes we wore to dinner to the show afterwards because there isn't really enough time to change without being rushed.

Disney Cruise Packing List- Dining

Cruise casual dining attire is in the majority of the dining restaurants. This simply means no swimwear or tank tops. It is completely optional to dress up.

What to Wear on Disney Cruise Formal Night

On a Disney Cruise, formal attire means more dressed up than your cruise casual. This would be attire that makes you feel a little more fancy than just your normal grabbing a bite to eat. Cocktail dresses, skirts, button-down shirts, jackets, a tie, are all acceptable forms of formal attire on a Disney Cruise.

Disney Cruise Line Specialty Themed Nights

On almost all sailings in the Caribbean and Bahamas, as well as some other destinations, Disney hosts a Pirate Night for guests. On this night, guests can choose to dress as a pirate and there is a special deck party. Disney will give every guest a pirate-themed bandana to wear on Pirate Night.

If you didn’t bring anything with you and want to dress up, the onboard shops will sell full pirate costumes for children as well as faux hook hands, eye patches, and other related accouterments. Guests are welcome to dress up how little or how much they want to with the themed night.

Pirate Night Disney Cruise Line

Pixar nights happen on most seven-night Alaska cruises. Again, dressing up is optional, but many guests will typically adorn a Pixar-themed shirt.

Adult Exclusive Dining

Disney understands that adults love the Disney Cruises, but sometimes they need to have an adult-only experience.

Each cruise ship has adult-exclusive restaurants. These restaurants are elegant dining experiences and the dress code is formal or semi-formal (dress casual is permitted). Clothing such as T-shirts, swimwear and sports attire are not permitted at all.

disney cruise line palo restaurant

Adults-only restaurants will vary depending on the ship. Below are the restaurants available in the Disney Cruise Line fleet:

Palo: An elegant northern Italian-inspired dining venue aboard the Disney Magic, Disney Wonder, Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy. Remy: A love letter to the City of Lights, serving up sophisticated French cuisine aboard the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy. Palo Steakhouse: Acclaimed Italian cuisine is paired with world-class steakhouse fare aboard the Disney Wish. Enchanté: A romantic dining venue featuring French-inspired delicacies aboard the Disney Wish.

Disney states that “guests are requested to dress in a manner consistent with the restaurant’s atmosphere. Formal or semi-formal attire is recommended.” Though a dressed-up casual look is now permitted, we really recommend that you take the opportunity to get dressed up to really enjoy the fancier meal away from the kids and other families.

Can I Bring My Own Food and Drink?

At Disney Parks it is not uncommon for guests to bring their own food and drinks to the hotel rooms as well as the parks to help save costs but also for the familiar foods that help keep your body happy.

With a Disney Cruise, guests can also bring their own food and drinks, but there are rules and limits. The first and major rule is that all food and beverages must be packed in your carry-on item. This is why we listed it on your boarding day packing essentials.

If you want to bring food aboard, Disney Cruise Line asks for guests to follow the following packing restrictions

Non Perishable snack foods packed in sealed, original packaging. All items must either be consumed prior to returning to your home port or remain unopened.

Breast milk brought on board in carry-on luggage only.

Coolers no larger than 12″ x 12″ x 12″, as carry-on luggage for storing medications, baby food or items related to dietary restrictions only.

Alcohol & Other Beverages

On a Disney Cruise all sodas, coffees and teas are included in the cost of the cruise with meals and at the beverage stations. Bar drinks, beer, wine, smoothies, specialty coffees and bottled water are an additional charge.

Guests 21 and older boarding the cruise are able to bring two bottles of unopened wine/champagne or six beers at the beginning of your sailing. You will need to provide your own corkscrew to open the bottles if you plan to enjoy it in your room. You can also purchase additional alcohol at port when you are on land. Each time that you go to port you can bring on an additional six pack or two bottles of wine per person.

If you bring your wine/champagne to the main dining rooms, there is a $25 corkage fee per bottle brought to dinner. The Cast Members will store your bottle for you to drink each night at dinner.

Port Excursions Disney Cruise Line Packing List

Depending on your cruise destination, you will be able to book excursions at your port to fully experience the destinations that you cruised to.

For Bahamian Cruises, Disney usually books a day at the Disney Owned island, Castaway Cay. Guests will want to pack sunscreen, bathing suits, water-bottles, maybe some sand toys, and anything else you may need to enjoy a day at the beach. These are some perfect water-bottles that are good for bringing along with you.

During Alaskan Disney cruises , the beach and your bathing suit will most likely not be used when you get off the ship. Many cruisers have needed multiple jackets, hats, and gloves depending on the time of year.

The best thing to pack for port excursions is to look at the Disney Website and what they recommend for your excursion attire.

Disney Items

Mickey Ears: No Disney trip would be complete without a pair of Mickey Ears. Disney has specific cruise line merchandise, including ears to buy, but check out the official Disney ears here on Shop Disney or find other licensed Disney Mickey ears that cost less on Amazon here .

Princess Dresses & Costumes: There are many character meet and greets available on board the cruise ships. Your princes and princesses may want to bring their dresses or costumes aboard the ship for pictures. For costumes the following toys are allowed: Store-bought light sabers, Plastic toy “pirate” swords & Plastic store-bought toy “Mjolnir” hammers (Thor's hammer) You can find good deals on all of these here .

Disney Apparel: Everyone in your party will find themselves wanting a Mickey shirt at some point. Make it easier on yourself and buy these items ahead of time! Check Shop Disney, Amazon, and Etsy for some great items.

Autograph book: Don’t forget an autograph book for your kids (or you!) to collect character autographs! Don't forget a fat pen.  There are some great options on Amazon!

disney door magnets for packing list

Disney Magnets: Almost everyone on a Disney cruise decorates their stateroom door with personalized magnets. The purpose of the door decorations: it makes it easier to find your room in a long hallway of similar looking doors and it is super fun. You have to see these Captain Mickey and Minnie door magnets that are surprisingly affordable. Feel free to be a little extra in your decorations. No tape or adhesive is allowed, only magnets.

Disney Cruise Packing List For Traveling with Babies

Children over 6 months of age are eligible to sail on cruises. Having items that are comfortable to them and that you are used to using every day will be incredibly important.

If you happen to forget something, there are typically some items available in the on board shops, but it is always best to try to pack your own.

Items you may want to bring: Bottles/sippy cups, Diapers, Wipes, Pacifiers, Baby food, Breastmilk/formula, Swim diapers, Baby carrier.

Pack n play/Cribs are available on board. A limited number of approved bottle warmers and bottle sterilizers are available upon request through Guest Services on board.

Disney Cruise List Packing List- Misc Items

verandah room view disney cruise line alaska

There are a variety of Disney Cruise Line packing list items that you should bring to have just in case or to improve your stay in your state room.

Bag or backpack to carry with you: You don’t want to drag your entire suitcase with you around the ship or want to have to constantly go back to your room when you need something. Make sure to pack a small bag that you can carry essentials (hand sanitizer, chapstick, sunscreen, bathing suit cover-up, etc) around the ship.

Camera: If you have a professional camera, decide whether you want to bring it along.

Battery Pack: You may want to bring a battery pack for your phone or other devices. As we mention above, we swear by the Anker PowerCore Portable charger . This charger holds 3-4 phone charges, is light, small, and affordable. Buy it here >

Ponchos: When traveling, you never know when rain is going to hit. Some of the excursions you book may also get you wet. Having your own poncho can help to keep you dry. You can order these on Amazon.

Lanyards: Lanyards work great for holding trading pins or your Key to the World Card. This card is used to get into the rooms and make purchases on board. See best lanyard options .

Your own glow sticks: Partying on the cruise deck late at night can be a ton of fun. Add even more fun with glow sticks. You can order these here.

Sunscreen & Aloe Vera: This is important- no one wants a sunburn on vacation. And sunscreen will cost more on the ship. You can never have enough.

Seasickness Medication/ Band/ Patch: Many people don’t know that they get seasick until they are aboard a cruise ship. I never get seasick, carsick, or have issues on roller coasters, but we sailed during a tropical storm once and I was incredibly sick. Having some sort of seasickness medication, band, or patch can be helpful in those just in case moments. Check out these options on Amazon.

Chapstick or lip balm: You would be surprised at how quickly your lips get chapped. Buy chapstick here .

Small pack of Kleenex: You don’t want to have to run to the bathroom or your stateroom every time you need to blow your nose. Grab a travel tissue pack to keep in your ship bag. Buy Kleenex travel packs here .

Anti-bacterial Gel Hand Sanitizer: Keep the germs away and buy travel hand sanitizer here.

Medications: Don’t forget to pack some pain reliever and tums/ Pepto Bismol! Always good to have just in case. Make sure it is in the original packaging.

Ear plugs: If you’re jammed in a room with others, bringing ear plugs can be a great choice. I prefer to bring a bulk bag and particularly like these earplugs with the connecting cord so you don't lose them.

Anything you need to make your child comfortable: Make sure to access the sleeping situation of your children before leaving home. Even the littlest thing to improve the amount or quality of sleep is valuable.

Books: During the day you are on the cruise ship there are a ton of activities that you can take part in (trivia, spa, swimming, games, athletics, etc.), but there may be times you want some down time to relax. Grabbing a book to read may be the best way to enjoy a relaxing day at sea.

What Not To Bring- Disney Cruise Packing List

The Disney Cruise Line has provided a list of items guests should not include in their packing. This list is compiled with the safety guidelines that are mandated by the US Customs and Port Security, so it is important for guests to leave these items at home. These are some of the items on the list:

  • Diving Equipment
  • Flammable Liquids & Combustible Substances
  • Restraining devices
  • Perishable items
  • Electrical Appliances (heating pads, power strips, diffusers, blenders, streaming devices, bottle warmers, irons, etc.)
  • Illegal narcotics/drugs, medically prescribed marijuana, drug paraphernalia
  • Sports equipment, except golf clubs and sports balls that must be stored in the room and only used at port.
  • Wheeled Recreational Equipment
  • Over-the-door hanging organizers, over-the-door hooks
  • Weapons: Firearms and ammunition, explosives, knives, sword, dagger, bullwhip

Disney Cruise Line reserves the right to seize and secure any item deemed to be dangerous or pose a security or safety risk, so it is better to just leave these items at home than try to sneak them in.

Consider getting a Travel Document Organizer to keep all your papers secure and easily accessible.

Cruise Documentation

Your cruise documentation is another must-pack item on our Disney cruise packing list. These documents, typically sent by the Disney Cruise Line ahead of your voyage, include crucial information like your cruise itinerary, port arrival form, and stateroom details . It’s like the magic ticket to your grand Disney adventure.

Medical insurance

Adventures are fun until someone needs a Band-Aid (or more!). So, having your medical insurance documents handy is crucial. This could be particularly important if you decide to partake in shore excursions. Safety first, even on a Disney cruise!

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is a safety net that can cover unexpected hiccups on your journey, from lost luggage to travel delays. Having this on your Disney cruise packing list can offer some peace of mind while you’re out meeting Donald Duck on the deck.

Medication (with prescription)

Lastly, if you or anyone in your party is on medication, be sure to pack an ample supply, along with a copy of the prescription. Whether it’s baby food for the little ones or specific medicines, being well-prepared means you can enjoy your Disney cruise to the fullest without any worries.

Don’t be fooled, my friends – packing for a Disney cruise isn’t as easy as saying “Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo”. There’s a little more to it than throwing in a bunch of T-shirts and flip-flops. You see, Disney vacations are a delightful medley of casual comfort, nautical adventures, and elegant evenings. And our ultimate Disney cruise packing list aims to help you strike that perfect balance.

Now, let’s talk about dress codes, particularly for the adults-only restaurants on Disney ships. Yes, you heard it right. Amidst the pirate costumes and Mickey’s ears, there’s room for a little sophistication, too.

Dress Codes for Adults-Only Restaurants for Guests 18 and Older

The adult-exclusive restaurants aboard Disney Cruise Line ships like Palo, Remy, Palo Steakhouse, and Enchanté, are not just about fantastic food; they’re about the experience and the ambiance. Picture this – you’re enjoying an elegant Italian meal at Palo, aboard the Disney Dream, the sea stretching out beside you as you take a sip of your fine wine. That’s a world far from the plastic swords of Pirate Night, isn’t it?

For these sophisticated dining experiences, guests are requested to dress appropriately. It’s suggested to dress in formal or smart-casual wear to align with the refined ambiance. Think dress pants, well-kept jeans, collared shirts, blouses, and stylish shoes. It’s your chance to trade the cruise casual for something a bit more refined.

But remember, there are restrictions . Attires like T-shirts, swimwear, and sports clothing won’t cut here. After all, Cinderella didn’t wear her glass slippers to the beach, did she? So save the swimwear for the pool deck and the flip flops for your casual strolls around the ship.

Now that we’ve tackled the sophisticated side of your packing list let’s set sail to the next part of what you can bring. Stay tuned!

Casual Blouses for your cruise

When packing shirts or Casual Blouses for your cruise, consider the magical range of activities awaiting you. There’ll be sunny afternoons on the pool deck, adventurous shore excursions, and even themed nights. Pack a variety of T-shirts, tank tops, and perhaps a few dress shirts or blouses for formal nights or dinners at adult-exclusive restaurants. Don’t forget to include a couple of themed tops for special events like Pirate Night. For first-timers on a Disney cruise, wearing a Mickey Ears T-shirt is almost a tradition!

Casual shorts for men

Picture yourself on Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island, with its average summer temperatures that practically scream “shorts weather!” A variety of shorts – from cargo shorts for your beach excursions to smart casual shorts for those warm cruise casual evenings on the deck – should be on your Disney cruise packing list. Don’t forget a couple of Swim Shorts for those dips in the ship’s pools or the island’s crystal-clear waters!

Jeans/Trousers

Casual Jeans

While shorts are perfect for the day, as the sun sets, you might appreciate the added warmth of jeans or trousers. Bring a mix of Casual Jeans for relaxed days on the ship and dress pants for formal nights or upscale dining experiences. Remember, even a Disney cruise requires a touch of elegance!

Pack dresses for Disney Cruise

Now, for the ladies on board! Dresses are versatile, stylish, and easy to pack. From casual dresses for the day to formal dresses for the evenings, ensure you have an assortment that suits all occasions. And for themed nights like Pirate Night, why not pack a fun, themed dress to show off your Disney spirit? Also, remember to pack a cocktail dress or two for the adult-exclusive dining venues.

Swimsuit Beach Cover Up Shirt

Last but not least, let’s not forget about Cover-ups . Ideal for transitioning from your stateroom to the pool deck, a stylish swimsuit cover-up is a must-have. They’re perfect for those times when you’re done with swimming but still want to hang around the pool or beach.

Also, if you’re planning a day on Castaway Cay, a cover-up is the perfect way to enjoy the beach while still being ready to hop into one of the island’s restaurants or the gift shop. The magic of Disney cruises isn’t just about the destination – it’s about the journey, the experiences, and the memories you create along the way.

Add swimsuit in disney cruise packing list

A crucial item on your cruise packing list is a Swimsuit . Whether it’s for poolside lounging or beach fun at Castaway Cay, ensure your swimwear combines style with comfort.

Themed swimsuits can enhance the fun, especially on Pirate Night! Pack multiple suits if you plan frequent dips and include cover-ups for transitioning between ship areas. Don’t forget a waterproof bag to stash wet swimsuits, protecting the rest of your beach bag contents from dampness.

Just as Cinderella’s glass slipper had a crucial role in her fairytale, your footwear choices can significantly impact your Disney experience. Let’s break down a careful selection of shoes that you might need in your journey.

Casual shoes for men

Sturdy, Comfortable Shoes are your best friends for this magical adventure. For onboard activities and shore excursions, opt for sneakers or tennis shoes that can stand up to a day of exploration. Remember, you’ll be covering a lot of ground – from the various decks of the ship to the fascinating locales of your port excursions.

But the fun doesn’t stop when the sun goes down. Evening events might call for something a bit dressier. Ladies, pack a pair of dress shoes for those fancy dinners, and gentlemen, don’t forget your dress pants and matching shoes for those formal nights.

Sandals/Slippers

Joomra Pillow Slippers for Women and Men

While shoes are perfect for active days and formal nights, don’t forget about the laid-back moments of your cruise. This is where sandals and slippers come into play.

Consider packing a pair of Sturdy Sandals for casual strolls around the ship or exploring the beach. And for the ultimate in comfort, flip-flops are a must. They’re perfect for poolside lounging, quick trips to the room service, or those leisurely mornings when you’re sipping coffee on the pool deck, watching the sunrise over the ocean.

Accessories

Sure, the Disney ships are a spectacle themselves, but what adds to the grandeur of this magical journey is the right ensemble of accessories. They’re like the fairy godmother’s wand, transforming the ordinary into an extraordinary Disney cruise experience. Let’s sprinkle some pixie dust, shall we?

Beach Hats for Women

Venturing into a tropical paradise on a Disney world, you’ll want to befriend the sun, not engage in a duel. This is where a sun-protective hat comes to the rescue. A comfortable, wide-brimmed Beach Hat for Women is an accessory that doubles as a shield, keeping you guarded from the harsh sunlight, whether you’re exploring beaches or lounging on the pool deck.

Squinting against the glare of the sun is so last century. Instead, opt for a sleek pair of Polarized Sunglasses like these polarized sunglasses for women. Not only will they protect your eyes, but they’ll also elevate your cruise casual-style game.

On a cruise ship that’s practically a floating city, you need an organized system to keep your essentials. A compact wallet or Purse can hold your room key, world card, and some change for the gift shop. For beach outings, consider a spacious beach bag that can accommodate everything from sunscreen and beach towels to sand toys for the kiddos.

Lanyard for Keys

Why not flaunt a bit of that Disney spirit with a Disney-themed Lanyard ? It’s not just a fun accessory but also a practical one, keeping your room key and cruise card readily accessible. Plus, it’s a great conversation starter with other Disney fanatics aboard!

Water Bottles

Hydration is key, especially when you’re in vacation mode. Having a refillable Water Bottle can help you stay on top of your hydration game. Many cruise ships feature refill stations on the pool deck, so it’s both an eco-friendly and convenient option.

Luggage tag

Finally, a unique Luggage Tag can make identifying your carry-on luggage at the crowded cruise terminal a breeze. This small but mighty accessory ensures that your Disney journey kicks off without a hitch, right from the embarkation day. After all, every magical adventure deserves a smooth beginning!

Sure, a Disney vacation is all about excitement, but let’s not forget those unsung heroes of daily life that keep us fresh as a daisy, even in the heat of an epic Pirate Night. Here are the toiletries to pack in your cruise bag to keep you ready for all adventures on your Disney ships.

Before you flaunt that radiant smile at the formal night or say “cheese” for the character meet-and-greets, it pays to invest in Good Oral Hygiene . Pack a toothbrush and your favorite toothpaste – the kind that leaves your breath fresh and ready for every magical Disney encounter.

As you find yourself in the heart of immersive experiences offered by cruise ships, staying fresh becomes paramount. From the high-energy “Deck Party” under the sweltering sun to busting moves with your favorite Disney characters at the magical night of the pirates, you’re going to need a Good Deodorant .

One that keeps up with you and your schedule, ensuring you’re fresh, confident, and fragrant throughout your Disney cruise. And remember, a little goes a long way. So pack your trusted brand or maybe try a new travel-sized deodorant. You never know, the scent might end up being your aromatic keepsake, a whiff of which will take you back to the cruise terminal, ready to embark on another vacation.

Moisturizer

Sun-kissed skin and sea breeze might be the unbeatable cruise experiences you’re after, but the combination could be a tad harsh on your skin. This is where a Moisturizer , suitable for your skin type, becomes your skin’s best friend on this nautical journey. After a long day spent at the beach, slathering some on will not only replenish lost moisture but also ensure a soft and supple texture.

In case your cruise itinerary includes some days of basking in the sun on the pool deck, a moisturizer with SPF can be a game-changer, offering that much-needed shield against potential sun damage. And for those who are thinking about Alaskan cruises, the chilly winds call for an intense hydrating cream.

While the cruise vacation is all about intense relaxation, it doesn’t mean you can’t look your best. Pack your Essential Skincare Items and a minimal makeup kit. A tinted moisturizer, mascara, and lip balm can work wonders for a quick, polished look for the main dining rooms or the themed cruise evenings.

Backup Glasses

If you rely on contacts, don’t forget to pack enough supplies, along with a bottle of Contacts Solution . As a backup, bring your glasses to give your eyes a break or in case of any unexpected issues with your contacts. After all, you wouldn’t want to miss the breathtaking views from the deck of the ship, would you?

Camera is a must-have for your packing list

In this digital era, devices have become our go-to companions for both capturing moments and entertainment. Whether you’re on your first cruise or your umpteenth, these handy tools are must-haves for your packing list.

Disney cruise line vacations are all about making memories, and what better way to capture those moments than with a Camera ? From the first glimpse of the majestic Disney ships to the enchanting themed nights, there’s a photo opportunity at every turn. Pack your DSLR or point-and-shoot, or if you’re into instant gratification, a Polaroid would do just the trick.

Between capturing memories, staying connected, and navigating your way around the ship with the Disney Cruise Line Navigator App, your devices will need some juice. And with the day-long shore excursions, a Power Bank becomes an essential item. Choose one with a high capacity to keep power banks up and running, ensuring you don’t miss a magical moment.

An iPad or any tablet is a versatile device for your cruise. It can serve as an entertainment hub, book repository, or even a digital canvas for the artistically inclined. If you have an early embarkation day, it can keep kids entertained while you wait to board the ship. Don’t forget to download movies, games, or books for offline use in case the Wi-Fi gets spotty.

From chilling on the deck to waiting at the cruise terminal, or winding down in your cruise stateroom after a day filled with fun and frolic, a good pair of headphones can be a real lifesaver.

Whether you want to catch up on your favorite podcast, dive into an audiobook, or enjoy Disney’s classic hits as you look out at the open sea, Headphones provide a personal sanctuary amid the buzz of cruise life. Make sure they are comfortable, offer good sound quality, and if you’re planning to be by the pool or beach, are water-resistant too.

The Disney Potion

Pirate costumes

Disney Cruises are a unique blend of relaxation and an endless whirlwind of Disney magic. To fully immerse yourself in this enchanting world and make your first cruise truly memorable, be sure to pack the Disney Potion essentials!

Princess Dresses (or other character costumes)

Deck your little one in their favorite princess dresses or character costumes for a truly magical Disney Line experience. Pirate’s Night on Disney ships isn’t just for the kids; adults can join the fun too! Pirate gear, Star Wars outfits, or even a swanky Mickey Ears hat can make the experience all the more memorable. Don’t forget, on a Disney cruise, you’re never too old for dress-up!

Magnetic Door Decorations

Get creative and make your cruise stateroom door stand out with some Magnetic Decorations . Not only does it add an extra touch of Disney magic to your stateroom, but it also makes locating your room after a day full of fun much easier. You can even tie in the theme of your door decorations with your vacation – think seashells for Castaway Cay days or stars for Star Wars Day!

Dry Erase Board

A Dry-Erase Board is a practical yet fun item to add to your Disney cruise packing list. Hang it on your stateroom door for a quick way to leave messages for your family or your new-found cruise friends. It can also serve as a fun countdown to exciting cruise itinerary items like the formal night, beach day, or shore excursions.

Pins for Trading

Disney Pin trading is a popular activity that adds an extra sprinkle of fun to your trip. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or just starting, packing some pins could lead to exciting trade encounters with the crew and other guests. It’s a magical conversation starter that transcends age!

Autograph Book

An Autograph Book is a Disney cruise essential for the young and the young-at-heart. It serves as an ideal memento for gathering signatures from beloved Disney personalities. Imagine looking back on it years later and reminiscing about the time you met Mickey and the gang on your magical adventure!

Optional Food and Drink to Pack for a Disney Cruise

Aboard the magnificent Disney Cruise, a scrumptious array of food awaits. However, having a few optional food and drink items on your packing list could enhance your vacation further. Pack some of your favorite snacks, such as granola bars or dried fruit, perfect for a quick nibble in between shore excursions.

If you’re traveling with a baby, having some extra baby food on hand is prudent. Bringing along a few packets of hot cocoa or tea bags can make a leisurely night on the cruise ship’s deck feel cozy and comforting. Remember to bring along a refillable water bottle to keep hydrated while enjoying the Disney enchantment!

What Not to Bring on a Disney Cruise?

When packing for your trip, you’re likely juggling princess dresses and pirate gear, but it’s equally crucial to be mindful of what NOT to bring. Disney Cruise Line, like all cruise lines, adheres to strict safety guidelines set by US Customs and Port Security.

For instance, absolutely no weapons are permitted on board, including firearms, ammunition, knives, swords, or even a charming pirate’s dagger. Also, leave your irons, sporting equipment, candles, bottle warmers, balloons, and musical instruments at home. Illegal drugs, including prescribed and synthetic marijuana , are strictly off-limits. Coolers are generally prohibited unless they’re needed for medications, baby food, or dietary constraints. As tempting as it might be, don’t pack homemade, pre-cooked, or other perishable items either.

Packing Tips for the Cruise

Disney cruising is a magical voyage, but don’t let the excitement of Mickey ears and Star Wars outfits make you forget the practicality of packing. Make a Disney cruise packing list and check it twice, like Santa!

Organize your luggage into two categories: an embarkation day bag and the rest of your luggage. Pack all your essentials like travel documents, medications, and a change of clothes in your embarkation day bag.

A light jacket, an extra swimsuit, and a pair of flip-flops can be handy as well. Use dryer sheets in between layers of clothing to keep them fresh, and consider packing cubes for efficient space utilization. Remember, your cruise is a blend of cruise casual and formal nights, so pack accordingly! And lastly, don’t forget shoes for all occasions – comfy ones for shore excursions, flip flops for the pool deck, and dress shoes for formal nights.

Packing for your first Disney cruise can feel like trying to wrangle a herd of enchanted broomsticks, but with the right packing list, the task transforms into a delightful prelude to your adventure. Remember, beyond your everyday essentials and the occasional formal attire, you’re packing for magic, laughter, and memorable encounters.

Whether it’s your child’s autograph book brimming with Disney character signatures or a prized pirate costume for the night, every item adds a spark to your vacation. So, pack your luggage with both practicality and enchantment in mind, lace up your tennis shoes, don your Mickey ears, and set sail towards a vacation that’s as magical and memorable as Mickey’s storybook ending!

How much luggage can I take on to Disney Cruise?

Disney Cruise Line allows you to bring two suitcases per person onboard, all luggage must fit comfortably in your stateroom, as there are no storage facilities for luggage elsewhere on the ship. Remember, larger bags must be checked with porters at the cruise terminal, and only carry-on-sized bags can be personally carried onboard.

Can I bring full-size shampoo on Disney Cruise?

Yes, you can bring full-size shampoo on a Disney Cruise. This cruise line does not have restrictions on shampoo bottle sizes as airlines do. However, staterooms come equipped with complimentary H2O+ shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and lotion. Additionally, if you’re flying to the port to embark on your cruise, remember that airlines typically do have size restrictions on liquids in carry-on bags.

Does Disney Cruise provide towels?

Yes, Disney Cruise Line provides towels for use in your stateroom and pool towels for use on deck. They also provide beach towels for their private island, Castaway Cay, and for shore excursions. However, if you’re particularly attached to your own beach or pool towel, you’re welcome to bring it along. Just keep in mind that cabin space is limited, so plan accordingly.

Can I bring food on a Disney cruise?

You can bring pre-packaged snacks and food on a Disney cruise. However, homemade or unpackaged foods, including items like fruits and sandwiches, are generally not allowed due to health regulations. Always make sure food items are unopened and in their original packaging.

Check the latest guidelines on the Disney Cruise Line website or with customer service to stay updated on any changes to their food policy.

What not to wear on a Disney cruise?

While Disney Cruises are family-friendly and relatively casual, swimwear is not appropriate in dining areas, and bare feet are not allowed outside of the pool area. For themed dinners or more formal nights, avoid ripped jeans, tank tops, or shorts. Always check the specific dress code recommendations for any specialty or themed nights onboard.

Can you take water bottles to Disney World?

Yes, guests are allowed to bring water bottles into Disney World. It’s a smart way to stay hydrated throughout the day. Ensure that they are not in glass containers and are not alcoholic beverages. Refill stations are also available throughout the park, making it convenient to refill your water bottle.

Can you bring a 12-pack of soda on a Disney Cruise?

Yes, guests are allowed to bring a limited quantity of soda or other non-alcoholic beverages onboard in their carry-on bag, provided they are in the original unopened container. Always check the latest guidelines on the Disney Cruise Line website, as policies may change. The onboard drink prices can be high, so this can save you money on room service.

What is the inappropriate dress code at Disney?

In Disney parks, inappropriate dress might include clothing with obscene language or graphics, excessively torn clothing, or clothing that exposes inappropriate portions of the body. Costumes for guests over 14 years of age are also discouraged. At Disney water parks, thong swimsuits or swimsuits with excessive material like long dresses or skirts are inappropriate. As always, it’s best to consult Disney’s official guidelines for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

Disney Cruise Packing List FAQ's

Before we get into the list of packing essentials and helpful extras that should be on your Disney cruise packing list, let's go over some frequently asked Disney cruise packing questions.

Multiple suitcases opened on a bed so you can see all of the clothes and items that are packed inside.

What Should I Pack for a Disney Cruise?

At a minimum, you should pack cruise casual attire (at least one outfit per day), a swimsuit, cover-up, hat, sunscreen, pj's, sandals, a pirate costume, prescribed medications, and personal care items.

Do I Need to Bring Shampoo on a Disney Cruise?

No, you don't need to bring shampoo on a Disney cruise with you because DCL provides it for you. Recently, DCL transitioned away from the travel-size bottles of toiletries to larger shampoo bottles (that you can't take as a free souvenir) in the shower.

This is the brand of  shampoo and conditioner that they have on board the ship, just in case you fall in love with it and want to buy more when you get home (like a lot of people do!) to remind yourself of being on the cruise.

Can You Bring Snacks on a Disney Cruise?

You can only bring non-perishable snacks that are factory sealed with you on the cruise. I brought a box of sealed granola bars on the ship with me to pack for excursions, and I had no issues getting them through security.

What Can You Not Bring on a Disney Cruise?

See below for a detailed list of what shouldn't be on your Disney cruise packing list:

  • Irons
  • Bottle Warmers
  • Sporting Equipment
  • Musical Instruments
  • Illegal Drugs
  • Coolers (Unless they're for baby food, medication, or allergy-related items)
  • Homemade or Perishable Food Items (You can bring non-perishable food that is factory sealed)
  • Weapons (Including knives, daggers, sword, firearms, and ammunition)

What Are Disney Cruise Luggage Limits?

According to this post , DCL allows each guest to bring two pieces of checked luggage (no more than 50 lbs each), and one carry-on bag that isn't bigger than 9x14x22.

However, I have to say that after three cruises, I've never once seen my bags being weighed or measured (like at the airport) at the port, so I don't know how serious they are about these limits.

A man in a floral shirt is sitting on top of a purple suitcase with a few suitcases next to him.

My husband and I always bring four pieces of luggage (see picture above) with us on a Disney cruise. We each pack one large suitcase (we check these), one small suitcase, and we both wear a backpack. I wear this small Belle backpack , it's the perfect size to hold the basics that I need while walking around on the ship!

I know it says that you can only bring one carry on bag per person, but we always each bring a small carry on and a backpack and we've never had an issue. On our last cruise, I carried on three bags (the third carry on pink bag (in the main image at the top of this page) has our Fish extender gifts in it) and I still had no problem carrying it all on board with me.

Disney Cruise Packing List 2019

This is my Disney cruise packing list that I use to pack for every Disney cruise that we go on. I hope it helps you!

Embarkation Day Disney Cruise Essentials

Pack these embarkation day items in a separate carry-on bag from your checked luggage because you'll need it once you get on the ship! Also, remember to put the luggage tags that DCL sent you on all of the luggage that you're going to check.

  • Cruise Check-In Documents
  • RFID Wallet  - I bought this wallet to hold both of our passports, ID's, cash, and credit cards for the trip. I love it because it protects against identity theft and I like how the zipper keeps everything contained. If you have any questions about what type of documentation you need to bring, you can find that information, here .
  • Glasses, Sunglasses, and Contacts (and contact solution if you wear contacts)
  • Medication (in original container)
  • Camera + Accessories
  • Swimsuit + Coverup
  • Change of Clothes
  • Anything Valuable (Expensive jewelry, camera gear, electronics)
  • Lip Balm
  • Wine or Beer - If you're bringing alcohol on the cruise ship with you, you have to pack it in your carry-on bag. Don't check it! If you have questions, you can read the Disney Cruise Line alcohol policy, here .

Note - Keep in mind that your checked luggage will be left outside of your stateroom for you to bring in yourself, they're not put safely inside your stateroom. I wouldn't leave anything valuable in your suitcase for this reason. I've never had a problem but I still wouldn't risk it.

Caribbean Cruise Attire for Women

  • Sundresses
  • Bathing Suit
  • Jeans or Pants
  • Sandals/Flats/Heels
  • Water Shoes (if you're doing a water excursion)
  • Light Sweater
  • Bras & Underwear
  • Belt

During winter, you may also want to pack:

Caribbean Cruise Attire for Men

  • Button-Down Collared Shirts (My husband loves wearing these tropical shirts on a cruise)
  • Water Shoes
  • Light Jacket
  • Undershirts

Dinner Dress Code

  • Main Dining Room (MDR) - The dress code for the main dining rooms is cruise casual (No bathing suits or tank tops). However, many guests like to dress up, it's your choice.

Related: Disney Cruise Restaurant Food Guide

  • Palo - If you dine at Palo or Remy, be aware that they enforce a very strict dress code. Women should wear a dress, a skirt, or dress pants with a blouse. Men should wear slacks, a collared shirt, and closed-toe shoes. Jackets aren't required.
  • Remy - Women should wear a cocktail or evening dress, a blouse with dress pants or a skirt, or a pantsuit. Jackets are required for men, along with a collared shirt, dress pants, and dress shoes. Ties are optional.

Themed Night Dress Code

If you go on a 7-night + cruise, there will be themed holiday nights, like, Pirate Night, Formal Night, or Halloween Night if you go on a Halloween on the High Seas Cruise. There is an optional dress code for each of the themed nights.

Formal Night Dress Code

If you'd like to dress up for Formal night, it's up to you how fancy you'd like to dress. I've seen a range from cruise casual to black tie, so it's really a personal preference. I wore a long, flowy maxi dress and I felt like I was dressed perfectly. You can see our Disney cruise formal night photos above.

If you do decide to dress up, you might find these clear garment travel bags to be helpful to protect your fancy outfit.

Pirate Night Dress Code

It's not mandatory to dress up for Pirate Night but it's really fun, so why not join in? If you want to participate but not wear a costume, you could wear this pirate t-shirt and the Mickey Mouse pirate bandana that your host will leave in your stateroom!

  • Women's Pirate Costume - This is the pirate costume that I wore, and this is the costume that my mom wore on our last cruise.
  • Men's Pirate Costume - This is the men's pirate costume that my husband wore.
  • Kids - This little girl pirate costume and this little boy pirate costume are adorable and would be perfect for Pirate Night.
  • Pirate Accessories - You should pack a pirate hat , eye patch, and hoop earrings.

Halloween Night

If you go on a Halloween on the High Seas cruise, there will be a Halloween day during the cruise. On this day, most guests (kids and adults!) dress up in costumes.

We've dressed up in the following costumes:

  • Women's Peter Pan Costume
  • Women's Minnie Mouse Costume (this costume is very similar to the costume I'm wearing in the picture above)
  • Men's Captain Hook Costume (this costume is very similar to the costume my husband is wearing in the picture above)

Disney Cruise Outfit Ideas

If you're like me, you'll want to be comfortable while on vacation. I stuck to sundresses , shorts and really cute Disney cruisewear t-shirts (l ike this  I Want Adventure in the Great Wide Somewhere  women's (small) aqua t-shirt), and light-weight floral maxi dresses .

A young woman modeling Disney cruise outfit ideas on the Disney Fantasy.

I mostly wore flats or strappy sandals, but I also brought one pair of comfortable low-heeled wedges ( similar to these shoes , this brand is really comfortable for me), water shoes, and my favorite sneakers for excursions at the ports.

An older and younger man smiling and dressed in matching Disney cruise shirts.

My husband and dad both wore button-down shirts or t-shirts with shorts (except at Palo) and sandals for most of the cruise (they only matched on the first day!). We never really dressed up and that seemed to be the norm for most of the people on the ship. You're on vacation, you should be comfortable!

Additional Items You Should Pack for a Disney Cruise

Camera gear & accessories .

  • Camera   - This is the camera that I use and love! I use to film all of our youtube videos and to take pictures while on vacation. It's the perfect size camera and it produces high-quality pictures and video!
  • Memory Card   - You should always pack an extra memory card for your camera just in case your main memory card malfunctions (this has happened to me!) or if you take more pictures than you expected.
  • Camera Battery  - Just like the memory card, you should always have a backup camera battery just in case.
  • GoPro - We got a GoPro specifically for the cruise so we could bring it snorkeling or on water excursions with us. I'm so glad we brought it, we recorded so many great memories of our cruise!
  • Electronics Travel Organizer - This is the case that we use to hold all of our camera batteries, memory cards, charging cables, and related camera accessories.
  • 5-Port Charging Station - If you have multiple phones, batteries, cameras, and devices that need to be charged, you'll be so glad that you have this 5-port charging station to charge everything at once!
  • External Battery Charger - We always bring an external battery charger with us on port excursions just in case we need to charge our phones.

Cold & Seasickness Remedies

  • Organic Lavender Hand Wipes   - These chemical-free hand wipes are the best! They don't dry my skin out and I love the fresh lavender scent.
  • Hand Sanitizer Spray
  • Elderberry Gummies - We each ate one of these gummies every morning and I really believe that it helped us to not get sick on the cruise! Be prepared, there are a lot of people with colds on the ship.
  • Oregano Oil - We took these drops once or twice on the cruise as a precaution to ward of sick germs. It mush have worked because we never got sick!
  • Sovereign Silver - This is another immune system booster that we take as a precaution to not get sick.
  • Hand Soap - I prefer to use liquid soap to wash my hands with (your stateroom only has a bar of soap) so I bring my own small bottle of castille soup.
  • Sea-Bands  - I was very worried about getting seasick so I wore these pressure point bands every day and I never had a problem!
  • Herbal Ear Patches  - I get very bad motion sickness in the car, so I took extra steps to prevent seasickness on the cruise without having to take medication. I swear these herbal patches are magic! I say this because I also wore them in the car driving to the port and I didn't get motion sick at all! You can see what the herbal patch looks like in the picture below, it's a very small circle patch that sticks behind your ear.
  • Ginger Capsules - I brought these ginger chews as a last resort for seasickness but I didn't end up needing them because the herbal patches and bands worked so well!

Stateroom Essentials

  • Magnetic Clips - We used these magnetic clips to keep all of our tickets and Personal Navigators together and then we stuck them to the door to stay organized.
  • Reusable Water Bottle - If you're like me, you like to have water around at all times. I'm always thirsty and I didn't want to make a million trips to the drink station! Also, I'm a bit of a germophobe, so I absolutely love that these water bottles have an attached screw cap that covers the mouthpiece so you don't have to touch it when you open it.
  • Clothes Pins - You'll need these to clip wet swimsuits to the clothesline in the shower to dry.
  • Door Magnets   - Most cruisers decorate their stateroom door with magnets! It's really fun to do and it helps you to find your door easily in the neverending hall of identical doors. We get a new magnet for every cruise and then bring them all on each trip, it's so fun to look at our magnets from over the years!

  • Wine Corkscrew - You can order a bottle opener from room service but it's much more convenient and quicker to just bring your own if you plan on enjoying wine in your stateroom.
  • Chemical-Free Laundry Pods - Pack a few of these natural laundry pods just in case you need to do laundry while on the ship.
  • Pop-Up Hamper - I've brought this hamper with us on our last two cruises and it was so helpful in keeping our stateroom organized! It pops right open and you can put it in the corner of your room to hold all of your dirty clothes. When it's time to go home, transfer all the dirty clothes to a trash bag and then you can easily fold the hamper back to its original flat state and store it in your suitcase.
  • Light Card - You're supposed to put your Key to the World Card in the light cardholder when you walk in the room, but it's not convenient if someone leaves the room and takes the card with them and the power goes out. These are the cards that we ordered and brought with us.

A light card in the light switch slot on the Disney Fantasy.

  • Wrinkle Spray - There are very few irons on board and you can't bring your own, it will be confiscated. I brought a small bottle of wrinkle releaser to spray our clothes before dinner and it worked like a charm to get rid of wrinkles.
  • Ziploc Bags -We used Ziploc bags to pack our shoes in, store wet swimsuits, and to keep little things organized.
  • Battery Operated Fan  - If you can't sleep without a fan blowing on you (like me!) then you might want to think about bringing your own small fan. Disney only allows battery-operated fans (or rechargeable) so don't bring a fan that plugs into the wall. I brought this small fan to set on my nightstand and it was perfect. There is a plug right next to the nightstand that you can plug it into.
  • File Folder - I like to keep all the personal navigator's (now you have to ask for a paper copy), maps, tickets, check-in papers, and any other documents that we received, organized and wrinkle-free in this file folder.
  • Hanging Organizer - You're going to pack so many little random things and there really isn't a lot of counter space to store everything. This organizer fits perfectly in the closet and it holds all those small items. We used it for vitamins, seasickness medicine, trading pins, sandals, my first-aid box, and so much more. Clutter makes me feel really anxious, so this hanging organizer was a lifesaver!

Castaway Cay & Excursion Gear

  • Wide-Brimmed Beach Hat - I brought a beach hat just like this one to protect my face and neck from the extremely strong summer sun at the pool and at Castaway Cay. This is the straw hat that my husband wore to Castaway Cay (See it in the photo below).
  • Reef-Safe Sunscreen   (this is the brand I use) - This is my favorite sunscreen. It rubs in easily and it works very well. The spray version of this brand is great too.
  • Beach Bag - This is my favorite Disney beach bag! I love the Mickey and Minnie print, it's so roomy, and the durable material is perfect for the beach and water. You'll need a beach bag for carrying things to Castaway Cay or to any water excursions.
  • Sunglasses - Bring an extra pair of sunglasses just in case you lose one pair!
  • Snorkel Gear - If you plan on going on a snorkeling excursion or if you want to snorkel at Castaway Cay, I would recommend bringing your own snorkel gear. You can rent a set for $32 at Castaway Cay but I just don't like the idea of putting my mouth on a snorkel that someone else has already used.
  • Reusable Shopping Bag - If you go shopping at a port, bring a reusable bag to put all of your purchases in. You can also buy a reusable bag at the gift shop on Castaway Cay.
  • Water Shoes - If you're going on any water excursions, you might need to bring water shoes! We visited the Baths in Tortola and these water shoes were invaluable for climbing over the rocks in the water.

A photo collage showing a man and woman going on excursions at Castaway Cay and Tortola on a Disney cruise.

  • Sun Shirts - This is the women's sun shirt that I wore and this is the men's sun shirt that my husband wore on the cruise (see photo above). These shirts are the best! We've never burnt when we wore them, even if it's all day out in the sun!
  • Baseball Hat - Bring a baseball cap (that you don't care if it gets wet) to wear during any water excursions to protect your scalp and face from the sun.
  • Small Backpack - Bring a small backpack that you can carry the basics in if you do any physical excursions. We brought the Castaway Club backpacks with us when we went to the Baths in Tortola. I'm glad that I didn't bring my nice Mickey Mouse backpack because the Castaway Club bag got wet and sandy.
  • Sunglasses Floating Neoprene Strap - Don't ever lose your sunglasses in the water again! These straps attach to your sunglasses and they float in the water if you drop them. This strap came in so handy when we were snorkeling at Castaway Cay!
  • Silicone Ring - I never wear my wedding ring on vacation. I don't want to risk walking around at a port that I'm not familiar with and possibly being jumped for my jewelry. This is the silicone ring that I wear for fun instead of my wedding ring while on a cruise.

Items to Carry With You on the Ship

  • Cash for tips - Mostly $1's and $5's for tipping and for shopping at the ports.
  • Backpack   or Small Purse - I carried my small Belle backpack around the ship and I brought it out on port days too. It was very convenient, I didn't even use any of the purses that I packed. If you don't want a Disney-themed backpack, I also love this slim anti-theft safe backpack .
  • Necklace Fan - This was the most important item to pack for me (it's the little pink or purple box hanging from my neck in most of the pictures), I wore my necklace fan every single day. The ship sways quite a bit and it bothered me sometimes during dinner. Having the fan around my neck with the air blowing up at my face helped to distract me from noticing the swaying. It was also really helpful at the ports because it was extremely hot!
  • Disney Cruise Lanyard  - Travis wore a lanyard the whole cruise and kept our KTTWC in the plastic holder for convenience. You need it for everything! Getting on and off the ship at port, to buy souvenirs at the gift shop, even to check-in at the fire drill.

Personal Care Items

  • Hair Straightener
  • Hair Curling Wand
  • Face Lotion
  • Body Lotion
  • Travel Makeup Bag
  • Tooth Paste
  • Tooth Brush
  • Shaving Razor (I brought this electric razor )
  • Tampons (I use this menstrual cup )
  • Clear Zippered Bags (to organize all the small toiletries)
  • Blister Bandaids - If you ever get blisters on your toes, these are the best band-aids to use! For those of you that like to break in new shoes or heels on the cruise, you'll be happy you brought these!

Assorted Important Items

  • 1st Time Disney Cruise Buttons - I bought these buttons for my parents on their first Disney cruise and they loved them! My mom wore her button every day of the cruise, it was one of her favorite Disney cruise accessories!
  • Disney Pins  - Bring at least 10 official Disney pins to trade at the Officer's Pin trading Event.
  • Sealed Candy  - We packed our own candy to bring to the movies because the candy at the theater is expensive and it's not included in the price of your cruise!
  • Fish Extender  (I've ordered Halloween-themed and Christmas-themed fish extenders from this Etsy creator, she's so talented and even offers super quick delivery if you order last minute!) - You don't have to participate in the fish extender groups on Facebook to join in the fun! On our last cruise, my husband and I went with my parents, and my mom and I enjoyed leaving little treats for each other to enjoy every morning.

  • Book (I brought my favorite Outlander Book) - It's nice to relax by the pool with a good book or trashy romance novel, whatever you're in the mood for!
  • Towel Clips  - We liked to sit on the top deck in the pool chairs because it was so breezy up there! These towel clips will hold your towel to the chair and stop it from whipping off in the wind.
  • Travel Journal  - You might be like my mom and like to write down all the details of the day so you can remember them forever!
  • Unofficial Guide to Disney Cruise Line Book - If you want to do more cruise research, this DCL guide will be very informative for you.
  • Hidden Mickey's at Sea Book - We love to look for hidden mickey's on the cruise, this guide will help you find the hard ones!
  • Glasses Wipes

159 Disney Cruise Tips You Need to Know

Once you've finished packing using this printable checklist and making your Disney cruise to-do list (make a checklist of everything that you still need to do before the cruise and check off as you complete items), make sure to go over the following tips that I've learned after going on three Disney cruises!

I wish I would've known these tips before my first cruise, my loss is your gain!

  • Every stateroom has a hairdryer with an attached diffuser, so you don't need to bring your own!
  • The only pressed penny machine at Port Canaveral is in the port before you board the ship. If it's important to you to get a DCL pressed penny, make sure you get it before you walk through the Mickey Mouse gate!
  • There is a walking tour of the ship offered on the first day of your cruise. The ships are massive and these tours will really help you to get a feel of the ship.
  • You get 50 megabytes of free internet but you have to redeem it on the first day of your cruise.
  • It's not listed on the room service menu, but you can call and order a slice of the cake of the day to have a surprise slice sent up to your stateroom!
  • If you order a one-day rainforest pass for Senses Spa before the cruise begins, it only costs $17!
  • If you don't get a reservation for Palo brunch or dinner before the cruise starts, you can get on the waiting list for a reservation once you board the ship.
  • There are morning drink specials (only $4.25!) at the adult pool bar on mimosas, bloody mary's, and screwdrivers.
  • If you buy a specialty coffee at Cove Cafe, there are complimentary treats that you can enjoy with your coffee.
  • The underwater statues of Mickey and Minnie in the snorkeling lagoon at Castaway Cay are marked by floating white buoys. Knowing this will save you so much time swimming around the huge lagoon looking for the statues like I did!

Free Printable Packing List for Disney Cruises

Suzanne Rowan Kelleher

A Disney Cruise is a treat for the whole family, but what you choose to bring onboard can help you make the most of your family vacation.

Before deciding what items to pack, think through how you want to spend your time on the ship and what experiences you would like to include in your schedule. Since a Disney cruise is very different from a regular cruise, consider carrying along with you some special items like an autograph book (for character meetings), magnetic stateroom door decorations to add a personal touch to your home away from home for the week, or Disney trading pins to help make new friends.

To help you stay organized (and provide a few suggestions about what not to forget) download and print out this free packing list .

Insider Tips and Do's and Don'ts

  • Dos and Don'ts for Embarkation Day : Make sure you get to the port and are ready for fun from Minute One. Be sure you know what to pack in your carry-on bag so that you can begin enjoying the ship even before your luggage arrives in your stateroom. For example, if you choose an early boarding time, it's handy to have your swimsuits and pool gear, including goggles and sunscreen, with you so that you can enjoy the pool deck even before setting sail.
  • Dos and Don'ts for Dining on a Disney Cruise : Make the most of your meals onboard. There is no "formal night" on a Disney Cruise, but passengers tend to dress smartly for dinner in the main restaurants. For adults, a typical look is either a suit or shirt and tie for men; dresses/skirts or dress pants for women; polo shirts or similar for boys; and dresses or coordinated outfits for girls. On "pirate night" many passengers dress the part and on any given night you often see young kids wearing costumes of their favorite Disney characters. If you plan on dining in either (or maybe both) of the wonderful adults-only specialty restaurants, you'll want to dress up a notch or two: suits for men and semi-formal dresses for women.
  • Insider Disney Cruise Hacks Seen on Pinterest : Pinterest is full of ideas for making first-time cruisers feel like veterans and includes optional take-along items that can make your cruise go smoother. Find out why, for example, magnets and clothespins are handy extras to have with you.
  • Inexpensive DIY Disney Souvenirs : Ideas will spark your imagination to include permanent markers among your must-bring items. You can easily turn affordable items from the dollar store into personalized keepsakes with the help of special Disney friends on the cruise.
  • If you are sailing during a special event, such as  Halloween on the High Seas  or  Very Merrytime Cruises  during the holiday season, pack special seasonal items or costumes for some of the special events and parties.
  • Finally, don't forget your smartphone. Download Disney's oh-so-handy  Navigator App  before you board so that you stay up-to-the-minute on events, meals, and activities happening on the ship. You can even communicate with family members through the app without using extra data.

Cruise packing list: The ultimate guide to what to pack for a cruise

P acking for a cruise can be complicated, especially for first-timers who aren't 100% sure what to expect. The task is made even more stressful because you can't run to the nearest shopping mall to pick up something you forgot when you're sailing in the middle of the ocean.

What you need is a cruise packing list that accounts for cruise line dress codes for daywear and evening wear, the various activities you'll do on board and in port, the gear you need for travel and to enhance your cruise cabin, and the necessities you need for daily life and unexpected emergencies.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

We've listed 103 essentials you should always pack for any cruise vacation. Follow our cruise packing list to avoid packing mistakes and be prepared for anything on your next sailing.

Daytime clothing

When packing for a cruise, start with the basics: what you plan to wear each day.

On every cruise line, daytime clothing is casual, and on a big-ship cruise, nearly anything goes. On a more upscale or luxury cruise ship, casual daywear tends to be more fashion-forward and stylish, so you might feel out of place in your cheap tee from Target.

Of course, the destination and weather will dictate what exactly makes it onto your cruise packing list. For a Caribbean cruise , you'll want plenty of beachwear; for an Alaska cruise , you'll want rugged clothes for hiking and warm layers for the frequently changing weather. In the Middle East and Asia, you might need an outfit that covers the shoulders and knees for visiting religious sites.

Remember that any destination can be unseasonably warm, cold or wet, so pack a jacket for that Bahamas cruise or a short-sleeved top for an Arctic sailing — just in case.

If you want to stay fit on your cruise and plan to hit the onboard gym or go biking in port, pack activewear. I once forgot to pack socks on a short warm-weather cruise and was disappointed when I wasn't allowed on the ship's bungee trampoline.

Cruisers traveling in a group should consider planning matching outfits, especially if they wish to take group photos on board. Group T-shirts are common, as are color-coordinated outfits for everyone from the kids to the grandparents.

Most important of all: Double-check that you've packed underwear. You're welcome.

Pack one outfit for every day, or plan to do laundry on your cruise ship . I like to look for ways to reuse pieces to save space. For example, I'll dress up a top with a skirt or dress pants for dinner, then wear the same shirt with jeans in port the following day. Or, I'll bring one solid color dress and wear it twice, but with different accessories.

Here's your daywear packing list (adjust numbers for the length of your sailing):

  • Casual tops
  • Workout wear
  • Bathing suits and swimwear
  • Cover-up or swim shirt
  • Sweatshirt or sweater

Evening clothing

Some cruise lines, such as Norwegian Cruise Line , have a relaxed attitude toward dinner attire, and you can come as you are. Other lines, especially the more upscale ones, have strict dress codes for dinner. For cruises on those ships, you'll need to add some nicer outfits to your cruise packing list.

Evening wear on cruise ships tends to fall into two categories: resort casual and elegant. For casual nights, think of a date-night style. Some cruise lines do allow jeans in the evening; pair them with cute tops and nice shoes.

Elegant or formal nights bring out cocktail dresses, suits, ties and jackets. If formalwear is not your thing, choose room service, or go to the buffet or a casual restaurant for dinner to skip dressing up. Some luxury cruise lines will not allow underdressed passengers into certain restaurants or entertainment venues on formal nights.

Related: Cruise ship restaurant nirvana: The 9 best meals you can have at sea

Pro tip: Many cruise ships turn up the air conditioning at night. Pack a light sweater or dressy shawl to keep you comfortable in cool onboard restaurants and theaters.

Don't forget to pack outfits for cruise ship theme nights. Popular themes include white night, pirate night and Halloween — and, yes, cruisers do go all-out with costumes. Check with your cruise line to see which parties or theme nights will take place, and then pack accordingly.

Consider an eye patch or swashbuckling hat for Disney Cruise Line 's Pirate Night, a white sundress for Norwegian Cruise Line's White Hot Night and some neon leggings for Carnival Cruise Line 's '80s night.

Definitely don't forget the ultimate evening wear — comfy pajamas — especially if you're sharing a cabin with family or friends.

Here's your eveningwear packing list:

  • Skirt and blouse
  • Wrap or sweater
  • Button-down shirt or polo
  • Dress slacks or nice jeans
  • Suit or tuxedo for formal night
  • Cocktail dress or gown for formal night
  • Theme cruise attire and costumes

It's easy to fill a carry-on with footwear alone when packing for a cruise. The must-have basic is a comfortable pair of travel shoes for the flight, ship and walking in port.

Other types of footwear to add to your cruise packing list are sneakers for athletic activities, flip-flops for the pool and beach, and dress shoes for dinner. (Ladies, try to match your outfits, so you only need to bring one pair of heels.) You might also want casual or athletic sandals, hiking boots or water shoes for rocky beaches.

Related: 13 things you should do before every cruise

Pro tip: Lay out all the pairs of shoes you think you need for the cruise, and then decide which shoes can do double duty and which you can leave at home. For example, on a Caribbean cruise, a sturdy pair of waterproof athletic sandals (like Keens) can multi-task as travel shoes, beach shoes and rugged activity footwear. A comfy pair of flats can pair with your casual daywear and your fancy evening attire.

Here's your footwear packing list:

  • Sneakers or comfortable walking shoes
  • Water shoes
  • Hiking boots
  • Dress shoes for the evening
  • Slippers for in-cabin use

Accessories and gear

Once you've packed all the clothing, it's time to accessorize.

For sunny days, men and women will want to bring hats and sunglasses. On cold-weather cruises, you'll need a warm beanie, scarf, gloves and waterproof gear. (Antarctica and Arctic cruises have unique packing lists, so check with your cruise line.)

Related: 20 must-have cruise items — including a roll of duct tape

Don't forget belts, jewelry and ties for evening dress. Have a little fun with it — you're on a cruise.

Don't forget to add these accessories to your cruise packing list:

  • Wide-brimmed sun hat or baseball hat
  • Rain jacket and/or pants
  • Pashmina or shawl

Toiletries and medicine

Like hotels, cruise ships typically provide soap and shampoo in your cabin. Some also offer conditioner and body lotion. However, it's hard to know whether your hair will respond well to the onboard products or if you'll hate the scent.

It's always safer to pack your own toiletries. Bring more than you think you'll need because it may be hard to find your favorite brands in foreign ports, and cruise ships sell necessities at inflated prices. (Here are a few more things you should never buy on a cruise ship or in port .)

Although you'll find hand sanitizer stations throughout your cruise ship, you'll still want to pack your own.

Sunscreen is essential; look for reef-safe versions if you plan on swimming in the ocean. Bug spray is also useful, especially in Alaska, where people joke that the mosquito is the state bird.

It's always smart to pack a first aid kit for your cruise; make sure it contains seasickness remedies if you're sensitive to the motion of the ocean. Over-the-counter medications are pricey on board, so bring the brands you most commonly use. If you take prescription medicine, bring enough for the trip and a few extra days' worth, just in case.

Pack these toiletries and medications for your cruise, preferably in your carry-on bag:

  • Shampoo and conditioner
  • Hair-styling products
  • Toothpaste and toothbrush
  • Glasses, contacts and contact lens solutions
  • Razor and shaving cream
  • Moisturizer
  • Body lotion
  • Lip balm (consider one with SPF protection)
  • Soap (if you're picky about scents or ingredients)
  • Feminine products
  • Hand sanitizer (gel or wipes)
  • Seasickness remedies (patches, pills, ginger candies and acupressure wristbands)
  • Pain-relief medication, such as Tylenol or ibuprofen
  • Allergy medication
  • Upset stomach medication

Travel gear

Not all of us are lucky enough to live an hour or two from a cruise port. Many cruisers have to fly or road trip to their departure port and need to pack for this travel as well. Make sure your cruise packing list accounts for your pre- and post-cruise travel needs, as well as items useful for your time on board.

For long and overnight flights to your cruise, pack accessories for the plane. If you've scheduled a pre-cruise hotel stay, consider packing the necessities for that overnight in a separate bag so you don't need to unpack and repack your main suitcase.

Related: 10 must-have travel accessories for less than $15

You'll want to pack your tablet, portable video game system and e-reader for both your pre-cruise travel and the sailing itself. Don't forget all the related charging cables. Or, skip the tech and bring a few books, as many cruise ships no longer offer onboard libraries.

It should go without saying, but you are responsible for packing necessary travel documents, including your cruise/flight/tour tickets, passport book or passport card (or birth certificate) and visa paperwork. Do not put these items in your checked bags. Pack them in your carry-on so they're always on hand and less likely to go missing.

I'm a fan of bringing a day bag for carrying things around the ship (like toting my book, water bottle and cover-up to the Lido Deck pool) and a small purse for carrying my key card, lipstick and tissues at night. Some folks prefer to bring a lanyard to keep their cruise room key card close at hand.

If you like to walk about with your morning coffee or tea, you can't get a to-go cup at the buffet unless you're paying extra for a latte or espresso. Pack a travel coffee mug so you can fill up on the free stuff. I also recommend bringing a reusable water bottle and filling it up at the buffet or even a bar. It helps reduce plastic waste, and you don't bust your budget buying bottled water.

  • Neck pillow
  • Noise-canceling headphones
  • Regular headphones or earbuds
  • Tablet or laptop
  • Portable video game system
  • Playing cards or other small diversions
  • E-reader or physical books
  • Visa documents
  • Cruise ticket or documents
  • Travel insurance information
  • Tour booking information
  • Small purse
  • Water bottle

Cabin enhancements

First-time cruisers don't realize all the cruise ship cabin hacks they can employ to enhance their onboard accommodations. Usually, all you need to pack are a few key items from home.

Many cruise cabin walls and doors are magnetic (Did I just blow your mind?), so I like to pack magnets both as fun decor and for organizational purposes. Magnetic clips and hooks can help keep paperwork and hats off the in-room desk and couch, while a magnetic whiteboard can be useful for leaving notes for your travel companions.

Newer cruise ships are designed so every cabin has enough electrical outlets and USB ports conveniently located throughout the room. However, older cruise ships have a sad lack of outlets. Unless you want to constantly battle your travel companions for charging priority, pack a power strip, multi-prong outlet or power adapter/current converter so you can charge multiple devices at once (and use any 220V European outlets in the cabin).

Just be sure that your power strip doesn't include a surge protector; those are banned from most cruise ships, as are extension cords.

Related: Packing for a cruise? These items aren't allowed on board

For evenings on board, pack a night light or battery-operated candles so you can find your way to the bathroom in the dark. A small, portable sound machine is helpful for blocking out hallway noise if your cabin is in a noisy area of the ship, such as close to the elevator banks.

You can sweeten your cabin bathroom by bringing a bathroom spray to mask unpleasant odors. Traveling with babies and toddlers who hate showers? A small inflatable kiddie pool or tub packs down small and can be used to give your little one a bath.

You don't need to pack a clothesline to dry wet items because one is usually hidden in your cabin's shower. However, I do recommend bringing a laundry bag or pop-up hamper to keep dirty clothes separate and off the cabin floor. Chair clips are useful if you plan to dry your clothes on the balcony and don't want them to blow away.

Pack these items to enhance our cruise cabin:

  • Power strip or multi-pronged outlet without surge protection
  • Power converter
  • Night light
  • Battery-operated candles
  • White noise machine
  • Bathroom spray
  • Inflatable kiddie pool
  • Pop-up hamper or laundry bag
  • Chair clips

Port day gear

You'll want to pack items specific to the activities you aim to do in port. Leave room on your cruise packing list for items that will change based on your destination and planned tours.

No matter where you cruise, you'll want a strong but lightweight backpack to stow everything you want to take off the ship with you. I love the kind with mesh pockets on the side to tuck away a water bottle.

In especially scenic destinations, such as Alaska or Scandinavia, you might want to bring binoculars and/or a DSLR camera (rather than relying on your phone for photos). Don't forget accessories like extra batteries, chargers and memory cards.

On beachy cruises, you'll want a beach bag, sand toys for the kids and perhaps your own snorkeling gear. Wet bags (or even plastic zip-top bags) will keep your wet stuff from leaking onto everything on your way back to the ship.

For water sports like kayaking, consider a dry bag to stow your camera gear, smartphone and wallet and prevent them from getting wet. Waterproof cases for your cellphone and camera are also useful, as well as "beach wallets" that let you go into the water with your credit cards and cash on your person.

  • Camera, memory cards, portable tripod and other accessories
  • Waterproof dry bag
  • Waterproof phone and/or camera case
  • Waterproof beach wallet
  • Snorkel, mask and fins
  • Beach toys for kids (such as packable pails and inflatable floats)
  • Retractable hiking poles
  • Packaged snacks (such as protein or granola bars) for long excursions
  • Lightweight packable travel towels if you want something that folds up smaller than the bulky cruise ship beach towels

Miscellaneous items to pack for your cruise

Some must-pack items for cruises defy categorization but are important nonetheless. Don't leave them off your cruise packing list.

Cruise lines have strict rules about what types of beverages and alcohol you can bring on a cruise ship . If you're picky about wine, many lines will let you bring on a 750 ml bottle or two. Pack your favorite, but be prepared to pay a corkage fee if you drink it at an onboard bar or restaurant.

If you plan to purchase wine in port to bring home, you'll also want to pack bubble wrap or wine protector bags to get your bottles home safely.

Some lines, such as Holland America and Carnival, also allow you to bring on a limited number of cans of nonalcoholic drinks such as soda, juice or seltzer water. This can cut down on your bar bill or fuel your Diet Coke obsession should your ship carry only Pepsi.

I'm sure I don't need to remind anyone to bring their cell phone on vacation (but remember to pack the charging cables). However, you might not know to download your cruise line's app before you leave home. The app will show you the daily schedule, deck plans, dining reservations, shore excursion options and more. Many apps, like the one from Celebrity Cruises , even allow you to chat with other passengers while you're connected to the cruise ship's internet . (Remember to keep your devices in airplane mode to avoid accruing large at-sea roaming charges.)

You'll want cash, especially small bills, for tipping porters and purchasing small souvenirs in port. Depending on your itinerary, you might want to acquire some foreign currency in advance. Otherwise, you can use an ATM once you arrive in port. (ATMs almost always offer a better exchange rate than airport kiosks.)

Bring a credit card that does not charge foreign transaction fees, so you don't spend more than you need to abroad. (If you don't have one, consider applying for one of the best credit cards for travel .)

What not to pack for a cruise

Now that you know what to put on your cruise packing list, you'll also want to know what to leave out. Some items you might be tempted to pack are outright banned by the cruise lines . Others simply aren't necessary.

Here's what you can leave out of your suitcase.

  • Linens and towels
  • Hand soap (unless you're picky)
  • High chair and portable crib (your ship will provide these)
  • Coffeemakers and other appliances with heating elements
  • Illegal drugs (including marijuana and CBD products, even if they're legal in your home state or departure port)
  • Extension cords
  • Beverages beyond the modest allotment of wine or nonalcoholic drinks in cans
  • Meat, cheese, fruit or other non-prepackaged food (check with your cruise line if you have dietary restrictions and require special food items)

Bottom line

Many cruisers tend to overpack when it comes to clothes and shoes but sometimes forget about other necessities. When you take your suitcase out of the closet and begin packing for your next itinerary, refer to this list and be sure you're covered when it comes to both clothing and those all-important accessories.
