Everything You Need to Know about Disney’s Jungle Cruise Attraction

in Disney , Disneyland Paris , Walt Disney World

Jungle Cruise Guide header

BEHOLD! The 8th wonder of the world, the magnificent, the amazing (and so on) BACK SIDE OF WATER!! Disney’s Exotic Jungle Cruise attraction has enchanted visitors since its opening day at Disneyland in 1955. That July 17, dapper Guests boarded shiny new watercraft to see animatronic animals in a leafy safari setting, and as the ride artfully aged, Jungle Cruise Skippers kept it fresh and entertained them with puns, jokes and otherwise gut-busting comments, making the attraction an Adventureland classic.

jungle cruise vintage photo

The Jungle Cruise attraction is an 8-minute boat ride through a lush rainforest-landscaped river where “ Guests can chart a course for high adventure on a scenic and comedic boat tour of exotic rivers across Asia, Africa, and South America.” The river, though it looks dirty, is actually clean water dyed with a mucky green dye to make it look dirty and more like a natural river. (This is also to hide the track the attraction ride boats are guided along). Disney Guests will see assorted animatronic animals set into natural-looking settings, a temple overrun with animals, and hear plenty of jokes from live Cast Members driving the boats forward as Jungle Cruise Skippers.

Guests may note that the elephant bathing pool looks so realistic that many photos of the bathing beauties are passed around on social media posing as real elephant photos. But don’t worry, you can take all the photos you want; all the elephants have their trunks on!

Where is the Jungle Cruise attraction?

Jungle Cruise can be found in the heart of Adventureland in Magic Kingdom (Walt Disney World Resort) at Disneyland Park (Disneyland Resort), Hong Kong Disneyland, and Tokyo Disneyland (where the boats run in the opposite direction!). Nestled behind some Adventureland tikis, you’ll find it in Magic Kingdom across from Aladdin’s flying carpets.

In Disneyland Park, you’ll find a two-tier queue next to the Tropical Hideaway watering hole as you pass into Adventureland. But don’t worry, both queues are fully accessible and Jungle Cruise Skippers will meet you at the front of the queue entrance to assist you on your watery safari.

There is a FastPass queue for this Disney attraction at both U.S. parks. While Walt Disney World utilizes a digital advance FastPass+ system, Disneyland Resort still relies on both the paper FASTPASS system as well as the digital MaxPass system. You’ll want to pay attention while you walk around in the queue for this classic Disney ride. You’ll see all sorts of jokes built into the decor as well as puns you can tell your family back home. The real treat is the queue soundtrack for the Jungle Cruise. It’s a mock-up of an old radio show hosted by Albert Awol, and is plentiful in puns, jokes, and old-timey sound effects.

The History of The Jungle Cruise

At the time of its debut in 1955, Jungle Cruise was a novel attraction and one of the few at Disneyland that was not based on an animated film or an intellectual property. Imagineer Harper Goff was in charge of designing the attraction, most well known for his work on 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea . Inspired by the adventure film The African Queen , Jungle Cruise was originally slated to have real-life animals, as requested by Walt Disney himself. When the price and care of live animals exceeded both budget and capability, animatronic animals were chosen as a show-stopping, consistent choice. (Think about how often animals hide from us at the Animal Kingdom Kilimanjaro Safaris !)

According to the Disney Parks Blog , the greenery chosen for the lush jungle scenes at The Jungle Cruise was handpicked by horticulturist and Imagineer Morgan “Bill” Evans. “Rather than create a true-to-life jungle though, Bill’s goal was to develop a “Hollywood Jungle,” a mixture of exotic plants and trees that would give the feeling of traveling through exciting and uncharted territories. To create his Hollywood Jungle here in Anaheim, Bill developed some intrepid techniques, like smuggling plant seeds inside the cuffs of his socks and planting orange trees upside down to resemble mangroves.”

jungle cruise plants vintage

Originally planned for the area where Tomorrowland now stands, Adventureland was moved to the west side of Main Street, U.S.A., in order to use the existing large eucalyptus trees planted there by the orange farmers who previously owned the California land. As the plot developed, the trees became larger and lusher, only adding to the jungle feel. The attraction was such as hit in Southern California that another version was added to Disney’s Magic Kingdom theme park and was included on opening day at Walt Disney World on October 1, 1971.

Ride vehicles on Disney’s Jungle Cruise

When taking your very scenic and giggly cruise around the rivers of the world, you’ll be seated in a multi-passenger boat with a Jungle Cruise Skipper at the helm. He or She will be using a microphone and sound system to share amusing factoids, jokes, puns, and fun surprises along the way. But listen carefully: the purposefully dry delivery of the Skippers means you may miss a few jokes. This is why Disney fans want to experience the attraction over and over again. It’s also worth noting that your cruise script and mood will vary from Skipper to Skipper. Try the attraction a few times and find a Skipper near and dear to your heart!

skipper of the year cast member award

When you board the boat, a Skipper or two will assist you into the boat and direct you to the right or left. It is important not to step over the “boxes” in the center as it is a trip hazard. If you wish to be seated in a certain area, tell the queue manager. There really is no bad seat, as the boat is open to full views on all sides. Pro tip: ride a bunch of times and experience the cruise from all angles! In 2020, clear plexiglass shields were installed in various sections of the boat, keeping passengers apart.

The Jungle Cruise boats do run on a track, similar to the Liberty Belle and Mark Twain Riverboats. But the engines are, indeed, run by the Skippers. You’ll notice the Skippers are in charge of the forward, rear and holding motions of the boat, though they may spin the “steering wheel” quite liberally.

While the boats are plenty seaworthy, mishaps happen. Disney fans may remember in February 2020, a Jungle Cruise boat sank at Magic Kingdom leaving guests with some wet sneakers and a lot of laughs. No one was hurt, and the boat was rapidly repaired and returned to the convoy. There was another boat of lesser memory in 2004, the Sankuru Sadie, that also sank at Magic Kingdom. After Sadie was repaired, she has been seen (even recently) making her way around the bend.

Did you know? The water flowing in the rivers isn’t really as dirty. Disney just adds a dirty looking dye to hide how shallow the river really is (and the track that guides the boat)! Just look at the Backside of Water gushing at Schweitzer Falls… the water is clean!

The Skipper Canteen Restaurant

Explore the bold, flavorful cuisine of Asia, South America, and Africa with the help of daring riverboat pilots. Influenced by the attraction just across the path, The Jungle Skipper Canteen, which opened in 2015 , is a flavorful dive into exotic flavor adventures while also meeting the needs of the pickiest eaters.

The Canteen has a berth-y waiting area with vintage fans and amusing decor in every corner. There are three dining rooms, each paying tribute to the Skippers who just guided you down ‘de Nile. The crew’s colonial-era Mess Hall (which is not messy at all, thank you); the Jungle Room, the former family parlor of Dr. Albert Falls himself; and the S.E.A. Room, a secret meeting place for the Society of Explorers and Adventurers. (Check out the secret bookshelf door that swings open!)

seafood stew at the skipper canteen

The most popular dishes on the adult main menu are the Dr. Falls Signature Grilled Steak, a delicious adobo-seasoned New York strip served with vegetables, chorizo farofa, and caramelized onion purée and red wine reduction. The light-fare sustainable fish served on a cassava cake with wilted greens and guava habanero sauce, and this writer’s favorite, Sankuru Sadie’s Seafood Stew: Shrimp, Sustainable Fish, Mussels, Bay Scallops, and Octopus simmered in a fragrant Coconut Sauce and served with Jasmine Rice (yup… this has to be a joke on the 2004 boat sinking…).

We highly recommend ordering the non-alcoholic Schweitzer Slush, which comes in an optional commemorative steel mug. It’s Frozen Apple Juice and Passion Fruit juice topped with Green Apple Boba Balls, first concocted by the noted explorer and humanitarian, Dr. Albert Slush. Finish your meal with the Kungaloosh!, featuring African-inspired chocolate cake with caramelized bananas and cashew-caramel ice cream.

Jingle Cruise Holiday Overlay

During the festive holiday time, the Jungle Cruise undergoes a decorative refurbishment to become the Jingle Cruise. Nope, it’s not a typo, it’s a winter celebration of burlap Santa hats, Christmas jokes, ride additions, and overall holiday spirit.

In 2013, the Jingle Cruise debuted during the Christmas season, opening at Magic Kingdom on November 8, 2013, and at Disneyland Park on November 12. In its early days, the Jingle Cruise holiday overlay mostly kept to the Guest queue area, the boathouse across the dock, and a script with holiday jokes. Later on, the Jingle Cruise overlay became more elaborate, involving extra queue decorations, a story of Santa’s plane dropping Christmas cargo all over the site, additions to the temple interior, even more jokes and fun Cast Member costume additions.

Jingle Cruise

The yuletide overlay continues to get more creative, and fans continue to become more endeared to the holiday version of the attraction. Walt Disney World fans may remember the outrage that was sparked in 2017 when rumors that Jingle Cruise would not return. Fears were assuaged shortly thereafter when the company confirmed its return. (In 2019, the overlay was not present at Disneyland Resort — be sure to check each park’s holiday lineup every year to see if Jingle Cruise will be available.)

As of the present day, the Jingle Cruise set has become extremely detailed. You’ll see not only additions to the set but also literal overlays to typically existing items. Various rustic Christmas trees dot the queue, and you may see an ethanol dispenser that reads ETHANOL altered to say ETHANOEL EGGNOG.

Observant guests will notice the names of the Jungle Cruise boats are altered with new/changed names like Garland Gertie, Icicle Irma, Poinsettia Sal, Yulelog Lolly, Candy Cane Connie, and Mistletoe Millie. It appears that the skippers made cheap yet heartful changes to the boats for the holiday spirit.

Be watchful as you make your way around the rivers of the world, as you’ll see SANTA STOP HERE signs, Santa’s workshop elements, and even a north pole where the safari group climbs. My personal favorite is the costume additions to Trader Sam, who is now called “Trader Sam-ta” and might bring you a shrunken head for your stocking…

The Jungle Cruise Movie

Disney’s Jungle Cruise movie was filmed in Hawaii and Atlanta, GA in the summer and fall of 2018, but the film’s release has been delayed until 2021 . The film will star Dwyane Johnson as Skipper Frank Wolff, and Emily Blunt as Lily. Billed as a “period piece” set in the early 20th century, the Disney attraction comes to life as a riverboat captain named Frank takes a scientist and her brother on a mission into a jungle to find the Tree of Life. In the African Queen -style film, the trio of newly turned explorers must fight against dangerous wild animals and a competing German expedition with possible supernatural forces and innumerable dangers.

The most groundbreaking news to come out of the creation of the film is that the Disney attraction, Jungle Cruise, will be reimagined with the help of The Rock, hopefully tying the film into the river journey (much like Pirates of the Caribbean did with the film franchise). Disney has yet for provide further details of this.

Dwayne Johnson in Jungle Cruise movie

Disney’s Jungle Cruise has continued to enchant the hearts and minds of Guests from all over the world since 1955. Through its growth and humorous nature, the ride has inspired merchandise , a holiday overlay, mugs , a restaurant, and more. chEARS to the Jungle Cruise, we’ll never take it for granite!

See Disney's new Jungle Cruise ride scenes without 'negative depictions' of native peoples

EW breaks down each new scene in the refurbished Disneyland ride.

disney jungle cruise ride video

If you think Disneyland's Jungle Cruise revamp isn't a slam dunk, you're in denial .

Earlier this year, Disney Parks announced plans to alter various scenes in the classic attraction to remove select cultural depictions in an effort to better "reflect and value the diversity of the world around us." Now, the refurbished boat ride will welcome riders once again when it reopens this Friday (one day shy of the 1955 attraction's 65th birthday), with a new story line involving a band of explorers — including a birdwatcher, an entomologist, a wildlife painter, and a photographer — venturing into the ominous foliage as a pesky group of primates punctuates their journey with adorable hijinks.

Before the grand unveiling — and the July 30 release of the Dwayne Johnson-Emily Blunt movie based on the ride — take a look at EW's breakdown of all the changes you can expect to see while floating past the backside of water once again.

Glowing cobra orb

Things get off to a striking start as the new Jungle Cruise tour begins; The spot previously occupied by tribal ruins now contains a large cobra holding a glowing orb — complete with a new skipper joke: "A lot of people say it's pretty heavy; I say it's pretty light."

Barrel of monkeys

Next on the journey, riders will notice a bright new paint job on a few floating barrels just outside a classic scene that shows a band of primates rummaging through an abandoned campsite. This time, however, a revolver in one of the gorilla's hands fires a few rounds, with sound effects and splashes of water simulating a bullet cutting through the surface.

Pole position

In one of many attempts to remove insensitive depictions from the classic ride, Disney Imagineers revamped a controversial scene that previously saw a group of men — all people of color — being driven up a tree. The set now includes animatronic figures representing a diverse collective of explorers, including two women and others of different cultural backgrounds.

Hungry, hungry hippos

A placid scene where riders pass through a watery alcove populated by a family of hippos received a slightly more menacing makeover with the addition of wreckage from another Jungle Cruise boat. One of the mammals even lunges at the sinking vessel, suggesting a similar fate is in store for park guests.

Trimming the tribal ceremony

Another notable omission in the refurbished Jungle Cruise ride is a scene that shows a tribal ceremony involving a cultural dance. Instead of passing through a village populated by indigenous people, riders now float by a sinking boat overrun by curious chimps. Die-hard Disney fans will recognize the name of the ship, the Mekong Maiden, as the name of one of Jungle Cruise 's original boats that was decommissioned in 1997.

Attack of the butterflies

Immediately after the tribal dance scene, another segment saw travelers being attacked by tribal defenders. The action sequence now features another family of chimps ransacking items from the explorers' boats while swatting away a swarm of colorful butterflies.

Trader Sam's club transformation

The Jungle Cruise finale was as popular as it was problematic; riders exited the canal as a salesman, nicknamed Trader Sam, tempted them with memorabilia commemorating their visit to the exotic locale. Now, in his absence, primates have, once again, overrun a jungle gift shop in a fitting conclusion to the refurbished attraction's new story line.

Disneyland's Jungle Cruise ride officially reopens to the public on Friday, while the big-screen adaptation of the beloved attraction hits theaters and the Disney+ streaming service on July 30.

Jungle Cruise Disney World ride review

Jungle Cruise Disney World ride review

The Jungle Cruise, nestled inside Adventure Land at the edge of Disney’s Magic Kingdom park, is a classic attraction. The idea for the classic attraction was born in the mid 1950’s and has been a hit ever since. While it’s not the most thrilling or visually stimulating ride at Disney’s Magic Kingdom, it holds appeal for a lot of different age groups and demographics.

It’s one of the few rides that Guests in wheelchairs don’t have to transfer out of – many attractions claim to be handicapped accessible but often require the Guest to be able transfer from the wheelchair to the ride vehicle – the Jungle Cruise is able to allow Guests to stay in their wheelchairs but still have the pleasure of experiencing a moving attraction. It also is accessible for children of any age, any height and many languages, including American Sign Language.

First Impressions

Upon entering Adventure Land from Main Street (where Cinderella’s Castle is located), you will find yourself walking through a jungle themed area. A strong smell of grass washes over Guests as they enter this land, and many consider this part of the experience. Unfortunately, many also find the scent overwhelming and migraine inducing. Either way, this smell can be avoided if Guests enter from the back side of Adventure Land (near the Pirates of the Caribbean ride ), which is connected to Frontier Land.

Magic Kingdom Resort Hotels

If you do end up walking in the main entrance and enjoying (or enduring) the scent, you will be greeted first with lovely tropical plants that lead to the Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse before making your way past and down a hill to the left into the queue for the Jungle Cruise attraction.

The ride is meant to look a bit run down and put together by hand, as if you’ve stumbled across an expedition in the wild jungle. The queue line is mostly covered from the sun and does have large fans, but it is still outside. If you have one of those portable fans that also spray water, you’ll probably want to bring it along for the wait. Tight quarters in the Florida heat can often mean that even if it is well-circulated, it’s still stuffy and humid.

In addition to environmental discomfort, isn’t much to do in the queue line either. Aside from a few well-themed crates, clever signs and allusions to a grander story, it’s a pretty bare queue. You will probably want to bring a phone to play a game on, especially if you have restless children. As you progress through the line, you’ll see Cast Members who work there, deemed “skippers,” who will direct you with phrases that will even get the dads in your group to groan. As you approach the end of the line, you’ll get sectioned off into another line and boarded onto a boat.

The boats in the Jungle Cruise are all real boats and while there are some areas that have bumpers, it does not have a track. In addition, the water can get up to 102 inches or 260 centimeters (over eight feet!). Because these are real boats and not simply cars on a track, the Cast Members are extensively trained in safety and will enforce it. Everyone must be sitting on their “back pockets” with their appendages inside the boat at all times.

They will stop the boat and call you out on it if you don’t. I have ridden this attraction over fifty times and I can personally attest that it’s done for safety. I have seen Guests almost get their arms crushed because they dangle them out of the boats. For a seven-year-old child, the weight of the boat against the dock is enough to break bones. Just be aware of your children and know that if someone mentions something, it’s for your own safety.

Fast Pass+ Reservation

Whether you should use a Fast Pass+ reservation for this ride will depend entirely upon your preferences. If you prefer thrill rides, save them for the coasters. If you prefer character meet-and-greets, save them for Mickey and the princesses; however, if you prefer classic attractions and want something that is fun for the entire family, Jungle Cruise should be at the top of your list.

Typically, the wait for this attraction isn’t outrageously long but it can get to be over an hour on a busy day. The queue line isn’t terribly exciting, and the wait is outside so there are better rides that provide more entertainment (and air-conditioning!) for your wait. Also, because this attraction is on the water, there are inevitably more mosquitos and humidity than in the rest of the park. It gets sticky and uncomfortable if you have to wait longer than half an hour. For that reason alone, I would suggest using a Fast Pass+ Reservation on this attraction if you don’t need it for the higher demand rides.

If it’s a nice day and you go in the morning or evening, a Fast Pass+ Reservation probably isn’t needed; however, if you aren’t able to make it during those perfect conditions, a Fast Pass+ Reservation is going to make the experience much more pleasant. It should be noted that it does occasionally close early on event days like Halloween parties and After-Hours events so getting there in the morning is always the best bet if you don’t want to use a Fast Pass+ Reservation. Also, it is an entirely outdoor, water attraction so if there is any lightening in a certain radius, it will be shut down. Safety first!

One unfortunate feature of this attraction is how Fast Pass+ Reservation Guests are handled. All standby Guests enter one queue line while Guests who have Fast Pass+ Reservations enter another. This is typical for Walt Disney World Resort; however, eventually, the two lines converge.

Thankfully, a Cast Member directs the convergence, but it can still make for some nasty stares when a Fast Pass+ Guest walks right in front of a Guest who has been waiting there for an hour. Ideally, the attraction would feature two entirely different lines that do not intersect like many other attractions but for now, you might have to avoid eye contact with some exasperated parents who didn’t choose to secure a Fast Pass+ Reservation for the Jungle Cruise.

Attraction Features

Once you decide if you’re going to use a Fast Pass+ Reservation on the Jungle Cruise, you can finally enjoy and immerse yourself into the story of the Jungle Cruise. Guests are taken on a boat tour of the Nile River and quickly they find out that things don’t exactly go as planned. The skipper leading your expedition will point out animals, locations and other interesting facts but the best part is undoubtedly the monologue each Cast Member prepares.

The skippers dive head first into puns, “dad” jokes and other dry witticisms. Each skipper has a unique slant to the story and they will perform their own curated jokes along with the tried and true classics. Along the ride, you’ll see local “headhunters,” camps that have been wrecked by animatronic animals and even their local celebrity, the Rock!

In addition to the corny humor, if you pay close attention, there is a tale to be unearthed in the attraction. The attraction wasn’t originally based on a Disney film, so it was given a backstory. The atmosphere and props used suggest that it was set in the late 1920’s. It is expedition based and it features a clash between the “modern” world and that of the natives in the Nile River area.

“Modern” men find there is a steep learning curve between the wild animals and crashed planes to hostile natives and ancient tradition. It’s based loosely on the past but mostly uses the past as a jumping off point for the rest of the narrative. For a more thorough history of this attraction, click here .

Popular Disney designers and engineers (referred to as Imagineers by the Walt Disney World Company) are mentioned in the story and via props so any Disney history buff is sure to love this attraction. There are lots of hidden Mickeys (more on those here ) and each detail was considered before opening the attraction. Even if you’re not one of the people who is super knowledgeable about Disney history (often affectionally referred to as Disnerds ), it is still an enjoyable attraction and excellent for the entire family to enjoy.

Child-Friendly

Most children will probably not understand the jokes but it’s a nice rest for ten minutes with plenty for them to look at. Walt Disney wanted his parks to be enjoyable for both old and young Guests and this attraction exemplifies this beautifully. The older Guests will appreciate the wry humor and the younger Guests are likely to enjoy the waterfalls, giant animals and many other sights along the way.

In addition, there is no height requirement, making it an ideal choice for Guests looking at attractions in Disney World for toddlers . There are no drops or jump scares to startle young children. There also aren’t any harsh or jerky movements to scare Guests; however, there is one section of the tour that goes through an ancient tunnel.

The tunnel is dark but not pitch black. There are a few illuminated sections featuring golden statues but it’s generally uneventful. If nothing else, it’s one minute of cool air where Guests can actually look around at their surroundings and check in with their youngsters before emerging from the other side of the tunnel with more high energy jokes. If you want more details about accessibility, this is a great place to start.

Aside from any pictures you take yourself or recordings of your favorite jokes, the options to commemorate your visit to this attraction are not abundant. A few pieces of merchandise are sold in the nearby Agrabah Bazaar but compared to the surrounding rides, the pickings are slim. Fortunately, the company has recently started stationing a PhotoPass Photographer outside the ride.

The photographer typically has a sign Guests can hold that features the name of the attraction and will pose Guests in front of the ride queue, which is probably the best place to get a themed photo anyway. They are obliging enough to take it with your personal camera or with their very nice professional cameras and link it to a My Disney Experience PhotoPass account. More on Walt Disney World’s PhotoPass Service can be found here.

In general, this ride is a great option for the entire family. It features humor that isn’t inappropriate but is witty enough that the adults will love it (with a few simpler jokes thrown in for the kiddos). It is an enjoyable ten-minute ride where Guests can get a short reprieve from the unconventional amounts of walking Walt Disney World requires. It is accessible for any age and disability and it features ideas directly from Walt Disney.

In addition, if you’re planning to visit during the holidays, it makes the transition from the Jungle Cruise to the Jingle Cruise! It features new scenery, new costumes, new boats and best of all, new jokes. Because Cast Members are in charge of giving the tour, they have the luxury of changing the theming and do so to reflect the season.

This brings us to another fantastic aspect of the attraction: humans! As odd as this may seem, very few attractions feature actual humans anymore! Most feature screens or animatronics but there is nothing like having a living, breathing Cast Member with a personal sense of humor to provide a unique experience every time.

Overall, I give this attraction a rating of four out of five stars. If the queue line was airconditioned or even featured interactive elements, it would receive five stars.

But if you’re still trying to decide if this attraction warrants a visit for your vacation, take a look at my list of reasons why it’s one of the best rides at Disney World:

  • Walt Disney himself worked on this ride and was present for the original opening.
  • It is one of the few rides that wasn’t based on a Disney film and has a full backstory.
  • It is ten minutes of sitting, which can be welcome in the Florida heat!
  • All heights and ages are allowed on this attraction.
  • It is entirely handicapped accessible and Guests can stay in his or her wheelchair.
  • It features humans, which means every cruise will be different.
  • During the holiday season it transitions from Jungle Cruise to Jingle Cruise.
  • The humor is sure to elicit groans and inspire inside jokes for the rest of the trip.
  • It’s close to a lot of other larger attractions so if you’re waiting for a FastPass+ Reservation on Splash Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain or Pirates of the Caribbean, it’s a good way to spend some time without wasting it.
  • The Jungle Cruise sits across from arguably the best treat in Walt Disney World Resort – Dolewhip!

BREAKING: Disney World Introduces NEW Ride Tier System as Part of Genie+ Changes

By Samantha Kendall 15 Comments

Genie + is about to change in a BIG way.

disney jungle cruise ride video

A while back, we learned that the service was due for an update  based on  what Disney had shared in the past, and those updates will finally be rolling out in Disney World later this summer . While there are still plenty of questions on just how these new changes will work, we do have more details on what you can expect!

As of July 24th, Genie+ will be known as Lightning Lane Multi-Pass,  and  Individual Lightning Lanes will be called Lightning Lane Single Pass.  In addition to these changes, Disney has announced that as of July 24th, you can:

  • Make Lightning Lane plans before you get to the parks, for added confidence.
  • Choose your experiences and times prior to purchasing, so you know what you’re getting.
  • Book Lightning Lane passes for multiple vacation days, all in a single day.

disney jungle cruise ride video

Lightning Lane Multi-Pass will work a lot like FastPass+, where you can make up to 3 Lightning Lane selections in a park in advance of your visit. Not only that, but you can choose available times as you make your selections. But, here’s the kicker — Disney has introduced (or reintroduced, shall we say) a tiered system for rides. It looks like out of those 3 advance selections, you’ll be able to choose one experience from a higher-tiered group and two experiences (or all three) from a lower-tiered group.

disney jungle cruise ride video

Expedition Everest

At Magic Kingdom, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Jungle Cruise, Peter Pan’s Flight, Space Mountain, and Tiana’s Bayou Adventure are all in the first tier.

disney jungle cruise ride video

At EPCOT , the first tier includes Frozen Ever After, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, and Soarin’ Around the World.

disney jungle cruise ride video

At Hollywood Studios , the first tier features rides like Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, Millenium Falcon: Smugglers Run, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith, and Slinky Dog Dash .

disney jungle cruise ride video

And over at Animal Kingdom , there will be no tiers at all — meaning you’re free to choose any of the attractions available with Lightning Lane Multi-Pass as part of your 3 selections. Avatar Flight of Passage will still be available via Lightning Lane Single Pass (A.K.A. Individual Lightning Lane).

disney jungle cruise ride video

Disney World hotel guests (and guests of other select hotels) will be able to plan Lightning Lane passes up to 7 days in advance  for their entire stay (up to 14 days).  All other guests can plan up to 3 days in advance.

disney jungle cruise ride video

Slinky Dog Dash

Advance purchase windows will allow people to “secure some of their must-do rides and experiences after they’ve had some time to decide what dining reservations they want to book and any other plans they may need to consider.”

You’ll be able to purchase a Multi-Pass, Single Pass, or both  depending on what you need — and there will even be a new option to purchase both in one transaction.

Of course, we’ll be bringing you all the latest updates you need to know about these new Lightning Lane changes along with letting you know how it all works once they officially roll out, so stay tuned to Disney Food Blog for more.

Can you book multiples of the same ride for each day? Like if I use my Space Mountain time and one is still open can I book it again?

' src=

June 25, 2024 at 6:25 pm

This seems like an amazing change for people who stay on Disney property, but I can’t help but wonder if it’s going to be worse for locals like myself with an annual pass. All of the thousands of Disney hotel guests can book rides 7 days in advance PLUS the entirety of their vacation up to 14 days. What rides and good ride times are possibly going to be left for everyone else who can only book one day at a time, three days in advance? At least the old way, everyone was on a level playing field, except for the minor advantage of resort guests being able to book an Individual Lightning Lanes a couple of hours early on the day of the visit. Maybe I’m missing something with the new way? What I described seems like how it’s going to work.

' src=

June 25, 2024 at 7:57 pm

These changes would be great if the service was included with the ticket price, just like it was when it was called Fastpass+. Too many add on costs when you’re traveling to Disney. I miss the good old days.

' src=

June 26, 2024 at 9:14 am

Ok now will the prices be changing as well?

' src=

June 26, 2024 at 10:08 am

Too bad it doesn’t apply to international guests. I guess Disney doesn’t want our money anymore!

So seems like the 2-hour rule is gone too?

' src=

June 26, 2024 at 11:04 am

Any info on the pricing for this??

' src=

June 26, 2024 at 11:05 am

This “new” tiered rides seems familiar, the ticket books back in the day. This new tiered rides, with the IP only rides, are we finally getting back to Walt’s original plans?

' src=

June 26, 2024 at 11:21 am

I want to know if you can book another tier 1 ride after riding your first tier 1 ride at the park if it’s available.

' src=

June 26, 2024 at 1:00 pm

I assume stacking lightning lanes with popular rides of your choice is not possible with the tier system. In fact the term stacking lanes is likely gone. That was fun to do. Go to AK in the morning and stack lightning lanes all day for MK rides to use in the evening when you park hopped there plus the individual lanes for tron and mine train also used in the evening.

' src=

June 26, 2024 at 1:28 pm

My family is the middle of our planned trip on July 24…. What do they mean by it ‘starts’ on July 24? is that the day that people with upcoming trips can start to purchase the new system in advance, or the first day that it is actually implemented for use in the parks (and those of us currently there will have had an opportunity to set up things in advance)? I’m not thrilled at the idea of having to pay up front for more things that used to be included in the ticket price, but I need to know how this is going to affect our trip I have just made the final payment for I do realize this is a lack of info on Disney’s part, and not DFB’s fault. This post has more info than I was able to find on my own yesterday. I will keep watching and hope that there is further clarification from Disney, and I thank you for the diligence of the whole DFB team in helping me be prepared for everything on a trip to WDW.

Is Test Track in refurbishment? I notice it isn’t listed. Do you foresee it being in Tier A or B?

' src=

June 26, 2024 at 2:37 pm

I know you can book another once youve tapped in or used one LL in the park. Can you choose a second tier one ride at that time?

' src=

June 26, 2024 at 4:50 pm

Hi Brian! Yes, Test Track is currently undergoing a refurbishment and we do not yet know which tier it will be in once it’s complete.

June 26, 2024 at 4:59 pm

Hi Melinda! When Disney says it starts on July 24th, they mean that is the day it will roll out. Let’s say that you have a trip planned for July 20-July 28th. You will have to use the Genie+ system from July 20-July 23rd and on July 24th you will have to switch over to the MultiPass system if you choose to do so because Genie+ will no longer exist per a Disney Cast Member, but I would encourage you to reach out to Guest Services directly for more clarification.

Every Disney Movie Based on a Theme Park Ride (In Chronological Order)

Disney theme parks take tourists around the world and beyond, but sometimes, all it takes is a screen to experience their many attractions. Disney has adapted a myriad of different media for the movies, but among the most interesting are their theme parks. When tasked with reimagining these iconic experiences, Disney had a legacy to uphold and close to seven decades of magic to draw from.

While Disney was initially known for its movies, television shows, and animated shorts, in 1955, the company ventured into the world of theme parks. Developing attractions based on their most beloved characters and original concepts, names such as "It's a Small World," "The Enchanted Tiki Room," and "Space Mountain" have become synonymous with the Disney brand. Inspiring merchandise, spinoffs, and happy memories, Disney's Imagineers have made their mark and set the pace for some of the most beloved vacation destinations in the world.

Tower of Terror was a Spooky Hidden Gem

Inviting guests to drop in and rise to new heights of horror, The Tower of Terror is a worldwide phenomenon that found its home in multiple Disney theme parks. Initially debuting as an attraction themed to The Twilight Zone in 1997, it became the first Disney ride to produce a stand-alone movie.

Starring Steve Guttenberg and Kirsten Dunst, 1997's Tower of Terror debuted on The Wonderful World of Disney . Following the adventures of a tabloid journalist investigating the haunted Hollywood Tower Hotel, he becomes entangled in a spellbinding mystery surrounding its cursed elevator. While the original movie is generally well-received by audiences, Tower of Terror became slated for a reboot with Scarlett Johansson.

Mr. Toad's Wild Ride Has Its Own Wild Story

10 Iconic Disney Rides That Closed Down (& Why)

Based on The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad , Mr. Toad's Wild Ride was a surreal journey into the depths of Hell. While the ride took inspiration from Disney's animated adaptation of The Wind in the Willows , in 1997, a film hit the U.S. before embarking on a tumultuous ride of its own.

Initially a direct adaptation of The Wind and the Willows, the 1996 British comedy encountered distribution dilemmas, putting the breaks on wider releases. In 1998, Disney rebranded the film as Mr. Toad's Wild Ride to reflect the iconic attraction. A bizarre tale of a movie that dramatically swerved to avoid box office disaster, this story couldn't have been wilder unless Mr. Toad was driving it himself.

Mission to Mars Twisted Its Inspiration in Creative Ways

Debuting as Rocket to the Moon in 1955, Tomorrowland's simulator attraction became Mission to Mars as technology progressed and humankind took its first steps on the Moon in 1969. Despite being closed in 1993, almost a decade later, Disney bizarrely adapted the ride as a feature-length film, Mission to Mars .

Mission to Mars, headlined by Gary Sinise and future MCU star Don Cheadle, was a sci-fi survival film similar to 2015's The Martian . Focusing on a group of astronauts facing the hazards of the Red Planet, the film ends with a strange revelation about Earth, alien life, and the cosmos. While Disney's Tomorrowland attraction aimed to envision the future, it couldn't have anticipated Mission to Mars' negative critical responses.

The Country Bears Has a Rather Unique Reputation

When the Country Bear Jamboree first welcomed guests in 1971, the technology utilized set a new standard in entertainment that'd inspire the likes of Chuck E. Cheese and countless other attractions. Featuring a colorful cast of animatronics, in 2002, they'd get a feature-length musical comedy that certainly made people laugh, but not in the way Disney hoped.

While the plot and soundtrack were forgettable, The Country Bears' casting of performer Christopher Walken as the villain was the thing memes were made of. Despite receiving a 31% Rotten Tomatoes score and a nomination for a Golden Raspberry , lines like "Oh no, Country Bear Hall has been crushed!" and "This is not over!...BEARS!" have made The Country Bears a cult classic in so-bad-it's-good cinema.

Pirates of the Caribbean Kickstarted a Massive Franchise

(2003-2017).

10 Weirdest Details in Old Disney Movies

An iconic staple of any Disney theme park, guests embarked on Pirates of the Caribbean bountiful boat ride to get a taste of the pirate's life. However, in 2003, a new movie franchise based on the attraction set sail and introduced the world to the now-legendary Captain Jack Sparrow.

Portrayed by the incomparable Johnny Depp, Jack Sparrow became a pop culture icon and the leading role in five Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Set in a world of swashbuckling action, mysterious mythology, and romance, Pirates of the Caribbean still stands as one of Disney's best franchises. With talks of new projects in development, many fans are eager to see where Pirates of the Caribbean will embark next.

The Haunted Mansion Embraced Comedy Over Horror

One of the triumphs of Disney Imagineering and a world-class ride, The Haunted Mansion invites guests to board a "Doom Buggy" to attend a "swingin' wake" with 999 grim, grinning ghosts. Among multiple adaptations of The Haunted Mansion, this ambitious film hoped to brighten spirits and create a delightfully frightful cinematic experience.

Featuring comedian Eddie Murphy, this movie focuses on family as real estate agent Jim Evers combats the paranormal perils of the eponymous haunted house to rescue his family and put its residents to rest. While 2003's The Haunted Mansion may have seemed dead on arrival thanks to its unfavorable critical reception, the film has found new life post-mortem as an underappreciated Halloween classic.

Tomorrowland Tackled a Whole Land Rather Than One Ride

Tomorrowland, the futuristic section of Disney theme parks, embodied Walt Disney's vision of a bright future fueled by human progress and technological advancements. Six decades after Disneyland opened its gates, that "great big beautiful tomorrow" Walt envisioned took flight on the big screen, bringing his futuristic dreams to life like never before.

2015's Tomorrowland offered audiences a glimpse into an alternate reality filled with secret societies, bright minds, and places where science thrived unhindered. While it shared similarities with the Bioshock video game series, it failed to garner the same praise. The movie quickly became a box office disappointment, making the adage "tomorrow never comes" an oddly fitting reflection as it dashed hopes of a Tomorrowland sequel.

Jungle Cruise Captured the Best Moments of the Ride

10 Most Underrated Disney Sequels, Ranked

Taking guests on a jungle safari while cracking a few bad puns along the way, Jungle Cruise remains one of Disney's classic theme park rides. Inspired by the success of Pirates of the Caribbean and perhaps seeking a worthy spiritual successor, Jungle Cruise set course for cinemas in 2021.

The action-adventure film, starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Emily Blunt, led audiences on a pulse-pounding expedition into the Amazon. As a film, Jungle Cruise delivered a fun adaptation of its source material. With reports of a sequel on the table and more adventures to come, many hope it's just a matter of time before a Jungle Cruise 2 disembarks for Hollywood.

Muppets Haunted Mansion Offered a Scary Good Time

In the early 90s, Jim Henson's Muppets made their home at Disney theme parks and greeted guests regularly. However, in 2021, the Muppets had their own adaptation of The Haunted Mansion as part of a straight-to-stream Halloween treat.

Centered on Gonzo and Pepe the King Prawn, the duo embarks on a seemingly straightforward challenge: survive a night in The Haunted Mansion. As things unfold, the Muppets must interact with an array of guest stars and an eerie ensemble as impending doom lurks within the walls of the cursed chateau. However, after learning to face their fears and the valuable lesson of never marrying an axe-wielding widow, this spooky tale concludes with laughter as Gonzo and Pepe ride off into the dawn.

Lego Star Wars: Summer Vacation Tied to a Now-Closed Hotel

Whether it was the sequel trilogy theming, lackluster experiences, or the hefty price tag for it all, few will forget the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser's failures, making it one of Star Wars' biggest mistakes . However, the hotel experience became assembled into a special as part of 2022's Lego Star Wars: Summer Vacation .

The self-aware animated comedy follows Lego Finn aboard the Halcyon luxury starcruiser as Force ghosts regale him with amusing stories of summers past. Despite recruiting the talents of "Weird Al" Yankovic and numerous Star Wars alumni, the Lego special did little to salvage the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser from falling to pieces, closing within a year of its opening.

Haunted Mansion Injected a New Level of Laughs and Horror

The Haunted Mansion lives on as Disneyland gears up for a new expansion to carry on the legacy of this timeless attraction. Yet, casting a shadow over it all is the 2023 reboot of The Haunted Mansion , which materialized on the big screen with the ambition of kicking off Halloween celebrations early and emerging as a summer blockbuster.

2023's Haunted Mansion debuted as a horror comedy revolving around Disneyland's legendary Hatbox Ghost and an effort to exorcise the sinister spirit back to the afterlife. Stuck in development Hell for over a decade and starting life as a Guillermo del Toro project, the final product proved underwhelming despite its all-star cast. Whether Haunted Mansion's performance haunts future Disney projects remains to be seen.

From movies to television and beyond, the Disney franchise incorporates most of the company's original works.

Genie+ Is CHANGING in Disney World — What That Means for Magic Kingdom’s Newest Ride

disney jungle cruise ride video

How will Disney World’s big change affect its NEWEST ride?

disney jungle cruise ride video

The next four weeks are going to be game-changing for Disney World. We’ve already known for a while that the Magic Kingdom’s newest attraction, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure , will be opening to the public on June 28th. Earlier this week, we learned that Disney would be completely revamping its Genie + system into a new take on Lightning Lane that will change Disney World vacations going forward. So, how will one affect the other?

Disney’s new Lightning Lane system will feature two options: Lightning Lane Multi Pass  will allow you to make three Lightning Lane selections in a specific Disney World theme park in advance of your visit, while Lightning Lane Single Pass will allow you to “secure a time to ride one of (Disney’s) most highly demanded attractions” for an additional charge in advance — much like it functions now.

However, just how far in advance will depend on what kind of guest you are. If you’re staying at a Walt Disney World hotel, you can begin booking your Lightning Lane passes up to 7 days in advance, for your entire stay (up to 14 days). If you’re off property, you can begin booking up to 3 days in advance.

disney jungle cruise ride video

For the Magic Kingdom, there are 3 tiers of rides you can book lightning lanes for in advance. For Lightning Lane Multi-Pass, you can book ONE experience from a higher tier group, and two (or all three if you so choose) experiences from a lower tier group. There are also two attractions at the park — Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and TRON Lightcycle / Run — that are ONLY available as separate Lightning Lane Single Pass purchases and aren’t part of the Lightning Lane Multi-Pass options.

disney jungle cruise ride video

So, where does Tiana’s Bayou Adventure fit in? It’s on that first tier, along with Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Jungle Cruise, Peter Pan’s Flight, and Space Mountain, which means that a Lightning Lane Multi-Pass can only be booked for ONE of these in advance.

In addition, it seems that Tiana’s Bayou Adventure — along with Walt Disney World’s other attractions — could have a standby queue normally and a virtual queue on occasion. According to the company, “…standby lines are still available at most attractions and experiences. From time to time, a virtual queue—accessible via the My Disney Experience app—may be used for a limited number of our most highly demanded attractions. When the virtual queue is in place, a standby queue will not be available, and Guests must use the My Disney Experience app to enter the attraction or experience.”

So, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure will be eligible for Lightning Lane Multi-Pass reservations if you can snag one. Stay tuned to AE for further updates on the new system as things come to light.

Is the Queue the BEST Part of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure in Disney World?
