DP World Tour: Victor Perez holds on for dramatic Rolex Series win at Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship

Victor Perez posted a final-round 66 in Abu Dhabi to become the first French winner of a Rolex Series event and put him inside the projected Ryder Cup qualification standings; Min Woo Lee and Sebastian Soderberg share second as Padraig Harrington takes fourth spot

Gary Neville believes Harry Kane would be the ideal striker for Manchester United, but insists it will be hard to prize the England captain away from Tottenham.

Victor Perez secured the biggest win of his career and boosted his Ryder Cup qualification hopes after surviving a late scare to claim a dramatic Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship victory.

Perez posted a six-under 66 during a thrilling final round at Yas Links Abu Dhabi, where a host of players were in contention, to claim a third DP World Tour victory and become the first French winner of a Rolex Series event.

The world No 111 produced a remarkable bunker hole-out at the par-three 17th to take a two-shot lead into the final hole, where a bogey was enough to end the week on 18 under and claim a one-shot victory.

Playing partner Sebastian Soderberg ended tied-second alongside Min Woo Lee, who almost found the final-hole eagle required to force a play-off, while Padraig Harrington's bid to become the oldest winner in DP World Tour history ended with a fourth-place finish.

How Perez prevailed in Abu Dhabi thriller

Perez went into the final round a shot off the lead but quickly joined the group tied at the top when he followed an opening-hole birdie by two-putting from 25 feet to pick up another at the par-five next, with the Frenchman then adding successive birdies from the sixth to briefly go two clear.

The 30-year-old birdied the 10th and fired an incredible approach to tap-in range at the par-five next to temporarily restore a two-shot cushion, although he that advantage halved when Lee followed three straight gains from the fifth with back-to-back birdies from the 11th to get within one.

Perez responded to losing his outright lead with a three-putt bogey by birdieing his next hole, then seemingly took control of the tournament when he saw his bunker pitch on the penultimate hole pitch five feet past the hole and spin back into the cut.

Harrington comes close to history

The tournament was potentially blown open at the last when Perez found sand off the tee and then narrowly avoided going out of bounds with a wayward second, although was able to pitch out and scramble a bogey to set the clubhouse target at 18 under.

Soderberg could only par the last to close a five-under 67 and finish a shot off the pace, while Lee - who bogeyed the par-three 17th - almost holed his must-make eagle attempt from the rough and then saw the ball narrowly miss the hole again when it trickled down the slope.

Lee's closing birdie left him on 17 under, while Harrington enjoyed a final-round charge with five birdies in a seven-hole stretch and signed off an impressive display with a final-round 67.

Overnight co-leader Francesco Molinari claimed a share of fifth with Alex Noren, while Tyrrell Hatton fired a hole-in-one at the par-three 13th on his way to a closing 65 and a share of seventh.

Sami Valimaki set a new course record with a 10-under 62, parachuting the Finn inside the top-10, while Shane Lowry dropped six shots in a four-hole stretch - including putting two balls in the water and triple-bogeying the par-four 15th - to slump to a four-over 76 and tied-28th.

Perez proud of victory after 'crazy finish'

Perez's victory follows his breakthrough success at the 2019 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship and last year's play-off win at the Dutch Open, with the latest title making him the early leader of the DP World Tour rankings and has him inside the projected Ryder Cup qualification standings.

"It's a great year ahead," an emotional Perez said. "There's a lot of big things coming up. I've had a really good off-season, I've worked really hard, and it's just great."

"I got off to a good start and I was just focusing on me and trying to do the best I can, because you can't control what anyone else is doing. I was trying to plod along, but Seb [Sebastian Soderberg] was fantastic, he never gave me an opening.

"I'm just delighted to finish on top. It was a crazy finish but I'm used to that by now. Hopefully I can make it a little easier for the next one. It [bunker shot on 17th] came up a little skinny, I'm not going to lie, and then spun back and the just the fortune of the ball going in. It's probably the greatest shot I've ever hit."

The DP World Tour season stays in the Middle East for the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, where Rory McIlroy features for the first time in 2023. Watch live on Thursday from 4am on Sky Sports Golf.

Luke donald, playing captain he's not ready to go there, but he leads the abu dhabi hsbc championship after day one, share this article.

dp world tour abu dhabi results

Is it too late for Luke Donald to declare himself a playing captain for the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome?

If he continues to play the way he did Thursday at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, that might be a decision he has to make later on this year.

“Playing here the last couple days I felt like there was some low scores out here as long as the wind didn’t blow too hard. It kinda suits my eye,” Donald said after his round at Yas Links.

Guess he was right.

Donald started strong with a birdie at the 10th, his first of the day. He’d go on to make three more birdies on his front side to turn in 4-under 32. The European Ryder Cup captain traded a birdie and a bogey on Nos. 2 and 3 (his 11th and 12th), before going on a run. Donald put circles on the card from Nos. 6-9 to come home in 32 for an 8-under 64 day one.

“I putted very nicely today, other than one three putt on the third hole for my only bogey. Made a couple long ones, but just was very tidy,” Donald said. “Maybe a little inspired by watching some good golf from last week (Hero Cup).

He was later asked about making his own Ryder Cup team.

“1975 was the last time that happened. We’re a long way from that.”

Guido Migliozzi and Jason Scrivener are one shot behind Donald at 7 under while Seamus Power is at 6 under. Shane Lowry is at 5 under with the Molinari brothers and Tommy Fleetwood is one back of them at 4 under.

Now that the Tour Championship is behind us, the PGA Tour is taking a week off.

While the tournament may not have delivered the dramatic finish everyone was hoping for, that’s often how tournament golf goes. It’s important to let the players play and let the results unfold naturally.

Trying to engineer drama with adjusted handicaps, especially for the top players, doesn’t always work out. Sometimes, you just have to appreciate and congratulate the winner for a fantastic season. Well played Scottie Scheffler!

The FedEx Cup has had a number of tweaks over the years – with the PGA Tour have another look at the format?

This is the case on the DP World Tour and it seems inevitable that Rory McIlroy has almost certainly already won the 2024 Race to Dubai – and well played to him.

But maybe there could be a twist in the tail that I am not seeing. Rory has committed to playing a strong end to the DP World Tour season – which can only be good for us global golf fans. When Rory is in the field it is a must-watch on TV for so many of us.

This week sees one of the long-standing tournaments on the DP World Tour – the OMEGA European Masters. It has a history dating back to 1905 at a venue established in 1923.

With the FedEx Cup now over it is exciting to see some of the returning players to the DP World Tour. This week the following players will be competing: Erik Van Rooyen (RSA), Matt Fitzpatrick (Eng), Francesco Molinari (It), Nicolai Hojgaard (Den) as well as the usual characters from the DP World Tour.

I could not find defending champion Ludvig Aberg (Swe) in the list of entries – perhaps I missed him.

I am always disappointed when players do not defend a title – we will give him the benefit of the doubt that he has a good reason – or I have missed him!

Ryder Cup points are up for grabs, Week Two – with all the Europeans hoping for a fast start on this race.

The Ladies European Tour (LET) takes a week’s break before next week’s Solheim Cup – a highlight of ladies’ professional golf – this year to be held in the US. We will review that next week.

Tommy Fleetwood, Adam Scott and Justin Rose confirmed for Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship

O lympic Silver Medallist Tommy Fleetwood will bid for further success on the 2024 Race to Dubai when he tees it up at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship at Yas Links, from November 7-10.

He will be joined in Abu Dhabi by Major Champions and former World Number Ones Adam Scott and Justin Rose, who have also qualified for the penultimate event of the 2024 season.

The fourth Rolex Series event of the season, the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship assumes a new position on the Tour’s Global Schedule as part of the season-ending ‘DP World Tour Play-Offs’.

Dubai resident Fleetwood is no stranger to success in the United Arab Emirates having claimed three of his seven DP World Tour victories to date in the country. A two-time winner of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in 2017 and 2018, he also won the season-long Race to Dubai in 2017 and earlier this year took the title at the inaugural Dubai Invitational.

Last month Fleetwood claimed the Silver Medal for Great Britain at the Paris Olympics, sharing the podium with World Number One Scottie Scheffler and Major winner Hideki Matsuyama at Le Golf National, the same venue where he made his Ryder Cup debut in 2018.

“I’m very proud to be a two-time winner of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship,” said the Ryder Cup star. “It’s an iconic trophy and an iconic tournament in this part of the world. It’s really exciting that we now have these two events back-to-back at the end of the season, and it’ll be nice to finish the season so close to home now that I’m based in the UAE.”

Forming part of the new DP World Tour Play-Offs, the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship will welcome the top 70 available players from the Race to Dubai Rankings in Partnership with Rolex at the conclusion of the Genesis Korea Championship. The Top 50 players on the rankings at the end of the week will then advance to the season-ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.

Getty Images

Scott, who moved up to second on the Race to Dubai Rankings in Partnership with Rolex after his runner-up finish at the Genesis Scottish Open in July, is seeking a career-high finish on the season-long standings, with his best result being seventh in 2002.

The former World Number One and 2013 Masters Champion is in excellent form, also finishing runner-up at the PGA TOUR’s BMW Championship a fortnight ago and fourth at the TOUR Championship at East Lake. He is set to make his 11th appearance for the International side at the President’s Cup later this month.

The Australian has had a run of strong performances in the UAE in recent years, recording four consecutive top ten finishes in his most recent starts in the country.

“The UAE is always a place I’ve enjoyed playing golf in and I’m excited to compete in this year’s Play-Offs,” said Scott. “I’ve had some good performances there over the last few seasons and I’d love to finish the season strong in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.”

Rose, who recorded his best finish in a Major Championship in six years with a runner-up result at The 152nd Open last month, will be making his first appearance at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship since 2021.

The Gold Medal winner at the 2016 Rio Olympics was runner-up on his first appearance in 2013 and he is hoping to capture an elusive title in the United Arab Emirates.

The Englishman was recently named Captain of the Great Britain & Ireland side for the 2025 Team Cup in Abu Dhabi in January, with his squad being finalised at the conclusion of this year’s Race to Dubai.

“I’m looking forward to finishing my season in the UAE,” said Rose, who won the 2013 U.S. Open. “The Play-Offs will certainly add an exciting new dynamic to the end of the year and I’m excited to compete in Abu Dhabi again.

“I’ve been fortunate to have achieved a lot in my career, but a win in the United Arab Emirates has escaped me thus far. I’d love nothing more than to change that this year and finish the season on a high note, before returning to Abu Dhabi for the Team Cup in January.”

McIlroy set to defend Race to Dubai crown at DP World Tour Championship

Rory McIlroy is set to return to Dubai with his sights on securing a third DP World Tour Championship title and equalling the late, great Seve Ballesteros’ record of six Harry Vardon Trophies at the season-ending Rolex Series event from November 14-17.

DPWTC-Rory-Announcement_16x9

The reigning Race to Dubai champion opened his 2024 season with a successful title defence at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, and the Northern Irishman has remained atop the rankings since January following a runner-up finish at the Dubai Invitational, and strong performances at the first three Majors.

The renowned Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates has been a prosperous venue for the World Number Three, who has won the event twice and topped the season-long standings in 2012, 2014, 2015, 2022, and most recently in 2023.

The 35-year-old has moved clear into third place for the most Race to Dubai victories, one behind Ballesteros and three behind Colin Montgomerie, as he looks to add another European Number One crown to his already impressive career.

The four-time Major Champion currently leads the Race to Dubai Rankings in Partnership with Rolex from Adam Scott by 1,554.39 points. He will spend two weeks in the United Arab Emirates following confirmation he will tee it up at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship - the first event of the DP World Tour Play-offs, a new two event series also incorporating the season-ending DP World Tour Championship.

The top 70 available players at the conclusion of the “Back 9” events will gather at Yas Links in Abu Dhabi before the top 50 available players move on to Dubai, as the new-look season comes to a dramatic close.

"Competing at the DP World Tour Championship is always something I look forward to at the end of the season,” McIlroy said. “Dubai has been a special place for me, and I've been fortunate to achieve a lot of success there. To have the chance to equal Seve’s record is incredibly meaningful, he was a pioneer for European golf, and his impact on the world game can’t be overstated.

“It’s going to be a couple of big weeks in the Middle East with the DP World Tour Play-offs and I’m focused on playing some good golf to put myself in contention for more titles.”
