Now this Naples or Sorrento: Full-Day Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius Tour is a stellar option for a couple of reasons.

Yup, trust me. Going tour-free was a BIG mistake.

“Definitely worth for us. Our driver Antonio and guide Carolina were just great! Thanks guys for making it really fun for us. Tour in Pompeii was totally worth it, I can not imagine to go without our tour guide, we learned so much about the history and she made sure to show us all the main points. Lunch was awesome, highly recommend to include it (starter, main course, desert and beverage). Overall really glad we took this tour and saved ourselves from the pain of trying to make it on our own by public transportation.” Adela ( read more reviews now )

I am gonna be real with you. Italy is a BIG ass place with tons of epic destinations to enjoy.

However, most normal humans out there (at least from the US) only get around two weeks of vacation per year. So, it’s likely that your mega epic Italy itinerary might feel a wee bit rushed.

Based on previous discussions he created the perfect itinerary including driving the Amalfi Coast and exploring the ruins of Pompeii! Along the way he provided tons of information to make the journey more meaningful. But the highlight of the day was a customized drive to the small mountain village of Petina where my wife’s great grandparents grew up! Believe me that is in no one’s guidebook! But Antonino took us there and served as translator so we could meet some of the townsfolk and explore the quaint streets. Another hour in Pompeii would have been cool but understand it can take days to get round all of it. #2 Daily Pompeii and Amalfi Coast Tour from Naples

It was the best tour of our trip. Michael, Viator review

This Pompeii and Amalfi coast tour is perfect for anyone hoping to see a little more of this beautiful area.

Combining a few different destinations on a tour is a great idea, because you can often see much more in a day than you could if you were going it alone. The people running this tour have been in the business for years, and have all the inside info!

The drivers on this tour have a lot of experience navigating the tricky mountain roads here, and they know all the best roads to take to get you places quickly and safely. I would absolutely hate this job, but being a passenger down these roads is pretty awesome.

This tour includes a half day at the famous UNESCO World Heritage Site of Pompeii and a trip to the most photographed place in Italy (or one of them anyway), Positano. You’ll get to stop for some incredible views too, so make sure you’ve got your camera handy.

#3 Full-day Sorrento, Amalfi Coast, and Pompeii Day Tour from Naples

a road in italy

Excellent tour! Worth the cost! Met all our expectations. Stephanie, Viator review

This tour really packs it in , so it’s perfect for anyone with limited time in the region.

Stop off at Positano first where you can explore the tumbling backstreets or head straight first for the best views and photo opportunities.

Next up is Sorrento where you’ll find breathtaking views of Mt Vesuvius. Sorrento is another totally stunning destination and you’ll wish you had longer to explore.

They save the best for last on this tour, with the visit to Pompeii. This open-air museum is one of Italy’s most visited sites, and it’s an absolutely fascinating look into the past, with a rather tragic backstory.

We wouldn’t normally recommend a tour that packs in so many different destinations, as it doesn’t leave you long to explore each one. But if you have a limited time in the area then this is actually a great option.

You’ll get a taster of each stunning destination but only need a day or your time to do so.

#4 Pompeii, Herculaneum And Vesuvius

Would highly recommend, Herculaneum was a highlight of our whole trip! Annette, Viator review

Many people want to know if they can visit Pompeii and Herculaneum in one day, and this tour allows you to do just that .

Herculaneum is smaller than Pompeii but in much better condition because it was protected by a flow of mud.

This town was a popular holiday spot for rich Romans, and the place is a lot more luxurious than Pompeii with coloured marble cladded villas. The ancient city has some famous finds, such as the  Villa of the Papyri  and the “boat houses”. This is where the skeletal remains of at least 300 people were found.

After seeing the devastation it caused, it’s time to head up Mt Vesuvius itself. The views from the top are incredible, though it’s a bit of a hike up there so make sure you wear decent walking shoes.

Pompeii Archaeological Park is one of the most famous sites in Italy. This open-air museum is a shrine to the city it once was, and you’ll see buildings like the Temple of Apollo to the Baths, the Casa del Fauno, and the Amphitheater which were preserved under ash for thousands of years.

#5 Private Tour To Pompeii And Herculaneum

Would highly recommended a tour like this if you only have a really short period of time to see all 3 places. Shirley, Trip Advisor Review

One of the most popular combinations when taking a tour is to visit both Pompeii and Herculaneum. Many people find they actually prefer Herculaneum, though it’s pretty impossible to miss out on the famous site of Pompeii altogether!

By visiting both you get a chance to see the highlights of each archaeological site. This private tour takes you between the two and also adds on a trip to the stunning Mt Vesuvius so you can see what caused all the chaos.

You’ll learn about the volcano from a volcanologist who will be able to tell you exactly what happened on that fateful day thousands of years ago.

You also have the option to upgrade your trip to include a private tour around both Pompeii and Herculaneum with an archaeologist.

This is a fantastic opportunity to learn about the past from a real expert, and as Pompeii is one of the most famous archeological sites in the world there is no better place to do it!

#6 Pompeii Amalfi and Positano Private Tour

the Colosseum at pompeii

If you get the chance TAKE THIS TOUR! ! We truly enjoyed this tour and it was one of our best tours so far! It couldn’t have been any better. Mary, Trip Advisor Review

This family run business gets rave reviews for a reason. They are friendly and knowledgeable, speak excellent English and nothing is too much trouble for them.

The private tour includes a visit to Pompeii and a trip along the famous Amalfi coast, stopping at all the best lookout spots until you reach the beautiful town of Positano.

You’ll have the chance to see (and stop if you like) traditional fishing villages, visit landmarks like St. Andrew Cathedral and the Spiaggia Grande, and take in the incredible views out to sea.

You’ll be picked up and dropped off at your hotel, and you can speak to the guide about customising your tour to make sure you get everything you want (and often more) out of your day.

#7 Pompeii Half-Day Tour From Naples

Great tour, well worth the money for hotel pickup, avoiding the queue and having a proper tour guide. The guide was very diligent and tested all the headsets in advance. Hugh, Viator review

This is the best half-day trip from Naples to Pompeii , with a 4.5 star rating and nearly 1000 reviews. One of the best things about going on this organised tour is that you’ll save a lot of time with the hotel pick up and drop off and the priority entry.

The guides on this tour are fantastic, sharing haunting stories about the lives (and deaths) of the people that once called Pompeii home. You get a lot more out of a trip here with an informed guide to share their knowledge.

This is the perfect tour for anyone on a time limit, who still wants to experience the famous city under ash.

Self-Organised Tours To Pompeii

the ruins of Pompeii from Naples

If you would rather get to and from Pompeii yourself then this is totally possible. You can book a tour of Pompeii with an experienced guide and meet them at the archeological site.

You might save a little money doing this, but honestly, not much. We will break down the prices below.

What it does give you is a little more freedom. You can choose which times you go, meaning you could even book a sunset tour and see Pompeii as the light turns golden.

If you’re keen to go it alone here are a few helpful details.

The Best Tours Around Pompeii

These are the best guided tours around Pompeii. You can walk around on your own but you won’t get nearly as much out of it. Unfortunately, the site isn’t well signed and doesn’t have descriptive panels so you miss a lot without a guide.

The ruins themselves are very cool, but way, way cooler when you know the backstories of the people that once lived, worked, and played there. These guided tours will share all of that and more.

#8 Sunset Guided Tour

Highly recommend this tour, it’s a great time to visit, the light is beautiful and it’s definitely quieter. This meant there were times when our group was totally alone and we were able to really soak up the atmosphere of this amazing place. Rachel, Get Your Guide Review

This is a unique way to see Pompeii , as the sun sets.

You’ll have a guided tour where you’ll learn about the ancient streets and discover more about the daily life of citizens of Pompeii prior to the catastrophic eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. But you’ll also have the opportunity to see the sunset over Pompeii.

We also highly recommend this tour because at this time of day it tends to be much quieter here (though don’t get any disillusions about having the place to yourself!)

✅ Book the Pompeii sunset tour here

#9 Archaeologist Guided Tour

visiting Pompeii from Naples

Our guide was exceptional! Being an archeologist that actually worked on multiple excavations at Pompeii allowed him to provide us with invaluable information. We would have never learned so much and appreciated the visit as much without having our guide. Get Your Guide Review

This is a very popular tour so make sure you book in advance as it’s likely to sell out during the summer months.

You’ll visit the most important buildings, homes, and shops on this 2 hour walking tour, led by your archaeologist guide. The guides on this tour have worked on the site of Pompeii so know a lot more than your average joe.

They use headsets and speak great English, so you can always understand what’s being said. This is also a small group tour so you can always see what’s going on and there isn’t much waiting around.

✅ Book this guided tour here

If you would rather do it all independently you might be wondering how to get to Pompeii from Naples. Here are the quickest, easiest and cheapest ways.

It’s only around a 30 minutes drive from Naples to Pompeii on the A3. There is plenty of parking near the site itself. Be prepared for some hectic drivers on the road though – Italy is famed for this!

There are multiple places to hire a car. We recommend using Discover Cars to find the best price and car for you, they often have some really great deals and cover all the major car hire companies as well as Italy’s own.

✅ Compare car hire prices at Discover Cars

Train is one of the best ways to reach Pompeii from Naples. The trains along this line are older trains, they stop frequently and they are often crowded (without air conditioning)!

Saying that, you won’t have to change as these trains take you directly to the closest station to Pompeii.

There are trains every 30 minutes from the Napoli Piazza Garibaldi Station, and you just grab your ticket at the station since you can’t book seats.

Look for either the

  • Circumvesuviana train , 35 minutes
  • Metropolitano train, 38 minutes

The Circumvesuviana train stops closest to the entrance of the ruins. Because of this convenience, it is also usually the most crowded and you may have to spend the journey standing up. Disembark at the Pompei Scavi/Villa dei Misteri stop.

The Metropolitano train is roughly a 10-minute walk to the archeological park but the trains are slightly more comfortable. Get off at Pompei Station for the closest stop.

Trains run from 6 am to 10 pm.

Bus is the cheapest option and takes roughly the same time as the trains (35-40 minutes). They leave every hour, sometimes more frequently.

You can catch a bus to Pompeii from the SITA bus station. Head to the Nuova Marina port first to buy your bus ticket. Then get off at the Pompeii Scavi Sita Bus Stop and it’s a short walk to the ruins.

You can also catch a bus to Mount Vesuvius from here by heading to either the Pompei Scavi Circumvesuviana or the Ercolano station.

How Long Does It Take To Get From Naples To Pompeii

On a day trip from Naples to Pompeii

If you drive from Naples to Pompeii it will only take around 30 minutes. If you take the train or bus the journey is around 40 minutes but you will also need to factor in walking time to the train or bus station on either end.

Is It Better To Visit Pompeii From Naples Or Sorrento?

You can visit Pompeii from either Naples or Sorrento, but it is quicker and easier to get there from Naples.

The roads are more direct, and there are more transport links. To get the bus from Sorrento you will need to make several changes.

It is also much easier to find tours that are based in Naples, though it is also possible to get a tour from Sorrento.

✅ This half-day tour to Pompeii from Sorrento is very highly rated

Can You Go To Pompeii Without A Tour?

You can absolutely visit Pompeii without a tour, and many people do every year.

You will save a little money if you go by train or bus and pay the entrance fee separately, but if you want a guide around the site then it is worth going with a tour group which usually includes transport from your hotel, a tour guide, lunch and often some other stops along the way.

How Much Does Entrance To Pompeii Cost?

Mount Vesuvius with snow on the top

General ticket prices are around $20 for an adult and you will pay extra on top of that to get access to other areas of the park.

You will also pay extra for a guided tour of the park or for headphone information (which is well worth getting as information boards are sparse).

On the first Sunday of every month, entrance to Pompeii is free. It’s a good idea to arrive early or late, as they have a maximum capacity and will close the ticket office for an hour once this is reached.

You can check up-to-date information on prices and opening times here .

Conclusion: The Best Naples To Pompeii Day Trips

Pompeii is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Italy, and for good reason. It’s a remarkable testimony to the Roman Empire and its effects on the world.

A trip to Pompeii is fascinating, educational, and fun, and there are plenty of different ways to make the trip depending on your schedule and budget.

Just make sure to do your research ahead of time so that you can enjoy your Pompeii day trip to the fullest!

This article has been written,  reviewed, and fact-checked  by Rick and I.  We live in Italy  and travel throughout the country to help you make the best choices for your trip. We wrote this piece  to help you have the best trip possible on your next trip to Italy.  Portions of this article have been written using assistive AI tools to help with tasks like research, spell-checking, grammar, and translation.

  • A road trip option lets you explore three beautiful Italian cities on a half-day trip from Naples. You'll have opportunities to taste limoncello, shop, and enjoy local cuisine.

Visiting Naples and want to see Pompeii is one of the most fascinating archaeological sites in the world. Once a bustling Roman town with paved streets and grand villas, Pompeii was frozen in time when Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD 79 and caught an estimated 12,000 people completely unprepared.

The city was preserved for over two thousand years until it was rediscovered in 1748. Having visited the site several times, Pompeii is absolutely worth seeing as visitors can stroll along ancient Roman streets, view beautiful villas, and participate in an exciting and memorable adventure.

If you’re planning a full or half-day trip from Naples to Pompeii, these tours can help you get the most out of your visit.

You can take a guided tour of the Pompeii Archaeological Site —whether a small VIP group or a larger regular group—and explore the paved streets, lavish villas, and temples of this well-preserved Roman city. Experience Pompeii’s ancient piazza and its famous theaters, or visit Vitti’s house and “Lupanare” (the old Roman brothel) for yourself! You can also see natural body casts preserved by volcanic ash nearly two thousand years ago!

A Travel Guide From Naples to Pompeii

Just 26 kilometers, or around 30 minutes by car, separate Pompeii from Naples, making it ideal for a half-day vacation. One of Italy’s most well-liked tourist spots, the remains of Pompeii draw 2.5 million tourists annually.

Naples and Pompeii are connected by buses, trains, and tours for those looking for a more in-depth experience. The Circumvesuviana railway provides the easiest way to get to Pompeii from Naples. This is for visitors who want to see the archeological ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum. The train route connects Naples and Sorrento, with stops near the excavated ancient Roman cities.

A tour guide who can direct you to the most significant locations is an excellent way to see as much as possible in one day because the ruins are so extensive—about 44 hectares have been unearthed. We took a guided tour of Pompeii with our very knowledgeable guide Vincenzo. He gave much inside information about Pompeii, including some fun facts that only an experienced tour guide knows.

If you’re wondering whether it’s worth getting a guided tour of Pompeii or not, the answer is “It is!” . Pompeii offers much to explore for visitors. The archaeological site is pretty wide with well-preserved ruins of this ancient Roman city. Having a tour guide improves the experience as they usually provide historical context and details about the area.

A journey to the adjacent Mount Vesuvius is a fantastic option for anyone looking for more information about what transpired in Pompeii. Here is our guide to the best half-day tours from Naples to Pompeii.

Private Transfer From Naples To Pompeii & Sorrento

Experience your tour with a private driver from Naples to Sorrento. It includes Naples hotel pickup and drop-off. We recommend you take a two-hour stop to explore the wonder of Pompeii and learn about its history. You can take a day trip from Naples to Pompeii. But to avoid peak times, it would be best to visit between 9 am to 11 am or later in the afternoon.

You can enjoy a 2-hour stop in Pompeii as you travel from Naples to Sorrento. Infact, I highly suggest spending at least the night in Sorrento or perhaps 4 to 6 hours, which should be enough time, to really immerse yourself in the culture.

You will be able to appreciate the beauty of the city that Mount Vesuvius’ catastrophic eruption of 79 A.D. buried beneath meters of ash and pumice. After your fascinating tour, you will proceed to Sorrento, where more enchanted settings await you.

A Road Trip Through Pompeii & The Amalfi Coast

On your half-day trip from Naples, explore three breathtaking Italian cities. On this enjoyable day, you can browse stores, sample limoncello, and eat a light lunch.

You can travel from Naples to Sorrento while admiring the natural beauty of the surroundings. While traveling, pay attention to the commentary.

After stopping to sample some of the limoncellos, a local liquor made from lemons, spend up to an hour exploring the winding lanes. Visit artisan stores and indulge in some regional specialties.

Continue to Positano, where you will have an hour to spend at the beach or admire the summertime flowers. Before going to a fine restaurant on the coast for lunch on a patio with stunning sea views, shop for the local Moda Positano fashions.

After that, you can spend the next hour and a half at your leisure in Amalfi, where you may explore the church or unwind on the beach with homemade ice cream.

Discover Ancient Wonders In Campania: Pompeii, Herculaneum & Mount Vesuvius

You can visit three of Campania’s top attractions in a single day. Make use of tickets with no lines. Discover the historical ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum, a Roman settlement, and be in awe of Mount Vesuvius.

Now, if you’re wondering how to get to Pompeii and Herculaneum in one day, here’s how!

Enjoy your day of fascinating sightseeing as you unwind in comfort and style on a luxury bus as you travel to charming locations in the Campania Region. After being tragically destroyed by volcanic lava nearly 2000 years ago, the world-famous Pompeii ruins are your first stop on the tour. These ancient ruins are in excellent condition. After spending about two hours there, it’s time to leave the Pompeii site.

We recommend you visit the fascinating Roman town of Herculaneum , another ancient site obliterated in 79 A.D. by volcanic flows. Retrace the course of history as the ruins are still primarily undisturbed after so many years. In Herculaneum, you will see the chilling site where the city’s people tried to find shelter from the eruption, but instead, they found their death.

After spending 1.5 hours at Herculaneum, proceed toward the impressive Mount Vesuvius to take in this magnificent but intimidating volcano.

Enjoy live commentary from your private driver as you travel to and from each destination. Learn about the legends and anecdotes surrounding these three of the area’s most popular tourist destinations.

Pompeii Walking Tour: A Private Tour Of The Ancient Ruins

You can take a private tour of ancient Pompeii ruins without waiting in line for tickets. View many of the structures still standing despite being covered in volcanic ash during Vesuvius’ eruption and see more than 250 ancient artifacts that are in exhibit.

Bypass the crowds and take a guided walking tour of the historical city of Pompeii. Find out about daily life and the previous residents. Explore significant structures like the Forum and the Thermal Baths.

Prepare to explore the excavation site where the Ancient Roman town has been slowly revealed over the last few centuries. After being covered by volcanic ash for almost two thousand years, many of its landmarks are remarkably well preserved.

You will see the Forum, the Thermal Baths, Lupanare (the ancient brothel), and even streets with shops displaying signs selling produce, including wine, on this walking tour as you learn about Roman town life at the time.

You can learn more about the town’s history and what transpired on that day in 79 A.D. when the nearby Mount Vesuvius erupted with the aid of a tour guide.

Experience Naples National Archeological Museum

View one of the most significant archeological museums in the world. It exhibits over 2,500 ancient objects . Look at gems, sculptures, and artifacts from Pompeii and Herculaneum that the Bourbons, the royal family of Naples, inherited from the Farnese collections.

One of the best collections of Greco-Roman artifacts worldwide can be seen at the Naples National Archeological Museum when you use your day admission ticket. Midway through the 18th century, King Charles III of Spain founded the museum.

The museum is home to sizable collections of ancient Greek and Roman artifacts. The Farnese marble and other engraved gems that comprise the collection’s core are part of the Farnese Collection. Additionally, you can view the museum’s most well-known collections and brand-new exhibits like the renowned Secret Cabinet and a history of coins.

3 Things to See While Staying in Naples

The city of Naples sits on Italy’s western coast, overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. With a population of 975,000 and a larger metropolitan population of more than 3.1 million, this enormous metropolis ranks third in terms of population in Italy, behind Milan and Rome . Since the Neolithic era, people have lived in Naples and the surrounding area. This human presence persisted through the ancient Greek, Roman, and later periods.

Naples has seen bloody wars throughout history as various civilizations fought to control the region. The country is one of the major economies in Italy and one of the most important Mediterranean ports. Due to the region’s long history, Naples has significant old structures, squares, and churches. It also has a wealth of modern conveniences and fantastic nightlife options. This genuinely magnificent tourist site looms in the shadow of the fabled Mount Vesuvius.

Castel Nuovo

One of the first views that guests approaching Naples from cruise ships will encounter is the Castel Nuovo, which stands out as a prominent element in the city’s skyline.

One of Naples’ most important historical sites, the castle is conveniently located near the well-known Piazza del Plebiscito.

The castle, built in 1282, has five round, crenulated towers and a fantastic triumphal arch that was later added.

Explore the castle’s interior to take in its lovely towers, the painted ceiling of the Baron’s Hall, the central courtyard, and the breathtaking views of Naples and the harbor that can be had by climbing the ramparts.

Cappella Sansevero

Naples’s center has numerous chapels and churches, including the Sansevero Chapel.

Before being transformed into a family burial chapel in 1613, the chapel was constructed in 1590 and served as the Duke of Torremaggoire’s private house. Near the harbor and the Castel Nuovo, the chapel sits in the heart of Naples.

Cappella di San Severo

Even though the chapel’s outside is simple and unremarkable, its inside is extraordinarily magnificent and the main attraction.

The chapel contains a sizable collection of paintings and numerous famous sculptures.

A beautiful painting adorns the ceiling, and several marble statues keep vigil at each pillar.

This outstanding display’s centerpiece is the magnificent Veiled Christ statue created by Giuseppe Sanmartino.

Naples Harbour

Naples from the top

Naples has a very active port, and marine trade is the primary driver of the local economy.

The network of ports, divided into different docks, is constantly bustling with activity.

You might easily spend hours strolling through the docks and ports along the stretch of land that runs from the Castel Nuovo to the Piazza San Giovanni Battista while taking in the fascinating activity that takes on here.

If you keep going west, you’ll also come to Porto di Mergellina, full of hip cafes and restaurants with a lively ambiance.

Come here to experience local culture and marvel at the various yachts docked in the harbor.

It is simple to understand why visiting Pompeii is one of the most popular activities in Italy. Pompeii, which had a population of 20,000, had suffered significant damage from an earthquake only 16 years before its destruction. Only about 2,000 people were trapped in the city when the final flow descended like a tidal wave because they had started leaving as soon as the eruption became apparent.

Reclaiming ancient Pompeii is still ongoing, and each fresh discovery advances our knowledge of daily life in 79 C.E. The most recent discovery was a slave family’s living quarters in a room of the nearby villa of Civita Giuliana. The room served as storage space and housing beds made of wood planks.

Its homes, shops, and public spaces will surprise you with the vivid impression of the old life they give you. Unavoidably, one gets the impression that everyone was going about their daily routines when the eruption happened, unaware that their final deeds would one day serve as a window into history. Pompeii is one of Italy’s most well-liked tourist destinations. It is easily accessible from Rome or Sorrento and can even be visited as a half-day trip from Naples.
