Haribo starts making gummi bears in Pleasant Prairie, but no tours (yet)

German candy maker Haribo has opened its production facility in Pleasant Prairie.

In the 1800s, German immigrants arrived in Wisconsin in droves and the influence of German culture can be seen in town names, summer festivals and the state's love of beer.

Now, Germans have brought a new influence to Wisconsin — Haribo Gummi Bears .

Sure, Haribo gummies have been available in the U.S. since the 1980s. But last week, for the first time, the company opened a production factory in North America.

Located in Pleasant Prairie , the 500,000-square-foot factory is part of a multiphase project that will also include an administrative building.

When did the Haribo factory open in Pleasant Prairie?

Production began in late July at the building along Interstate 94 that features a massive Haribo logo emblazoned on the side of the building. The company said the factory was opened to meet the growing demand by American consumers.

“I started my career with Haribo more than 20 years ago, and I’m so proud to be part of the team that made the dream of a U.S. factory come true,” said Hakan Zor, chief production officer, Haribo of America.

What will be produced at the Haribo factory in Pleasant Prairie?

Haribo said the factory will be almost solely dedicated to producing Goldbears — the brand's most popular snack.

With 200 employees working at the factory, the company predicts that hundreds of tons of Goldbears will be produced at the new location this year.

Does the new Haribo factory mean new flavors will be coming to the U.S.?

While the factory will mainly be used to produce Goldbears, Haribo announced that it'll also be introducing new Wild Berry Goldbears into the American market.

While the new product will be produced in Germany, the presence of the new factory could mean new flavors will be more common, since Haribo said it wants to grow and diversify production at the facility.

Can you take tours of the Haribo factory in Pleasant Prairie?

Unfortunately, Haribo said tours of the factory won't be available “in order to abide by food safety regulations and protect all stakeholders.”

However, the company didn't dismiss the possibility of running tours at the facility in the future.

Why did Haribo choose Pleasant Prairie?

The company said it chose Pleasant Prairie as its U.S. manufacturing location because of its “shared values of quality, trust and independence, coupled with the work ethic of the region and warm welcome from the community.”

Haribo also said it intends to work with the Boys & Girls Club of Kenosha, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, Carthage College and Gateway Technical College to provide scholarship and internship opportunities.

Haribo’s Pleasant Prairie manufacturing facility now open, producing gummi bears

Ashley Smart

Haribo’s Pleasant Prairie manufacturing facility is officially open and focused on producing the company’s well-known Goldbears gummi treats.

The company announced Thursday that production has begun at the new, 500,000-square-foot factory. There are currently 200 employees working at the facility and the company is planning to expand production in the future.

Haribo originally announced plans for a plant in Pleasant Prairie in March 2017. The company did not break ground for the plant until late 2020.

This is Haribo’s first North American manufacturing facility. It is located southwest of 120th Avenue (West Frontage Road) and Highway C (Wilmot Road) in the Prairie Highlands Corporate Park. The facility is on 136.8 acres of property.

“I started my career with HARIBO more than 20 years ago, and I’m so proud to be part of the team that made the dream of a U.S. factory come true,” said Hakan Zor , chief production officer, Haribo of America. “Our associates worked tirelessly to ensure every step was taken with care, with the best quality equipment, technology and ingredients on the market. The Haribo brand has limitless potential and producing in the U.S. is an exciting next chapter of our story.”

The Pleasant Prairie facility is a multi-phase project. The first phase includes the production facility, an administrative building and a warehouse. Future phases are in development and will include new technology, capacity and hundreds of new employees.

Those future phases could bring employment at the complex to more than 1,200. Haribo has not specified by what date the full buildout of the campus will be completed. The company plans to produce 132 million pounds of gummi candies each year now that phase one of the facility is complete.

“At Haribo we think in generations. We are in the U.S. for the long-term and are honored to be part of the Pleasant Prairie community,” said Wes Saber , chief financial officer, Haribo of America. “One of our core values is trust, and it was important for us to give back to the people of Pleasant Prairie who have welcomed us so warmly. We believe everyone deserves access to quality, affordable education so our partnerships reflect that. We’re committed to creating learning and career opportunities that will drive economic development and wellness for southeast Wisconsin.”

The Wisconsin-based facility is HARIBO’s 16th factory; facilities span across 11 countries. The global headquarters is located in Germany and the U.S. headquarters operates out of Rosemont, Ill.

The company makes more than 160 million Goldbears daily, with hundreds of tons of them now coming from Wisconsin.

“I started my career with HARIBO more than 20 years ago, and I’m so proud to be part of the team that made the dream of a U.S. factory come true,” said Hakan Zor, chief production officer, HARIBO of America. “Our Associates worked tirelessly to ensure every step was taken with care, with the best quality equipment, technology and ingredients on the market. The HARIBO brand has limitless potential and producing in the U.S. is an exciting next chapter of our story.”

HARIBO said it opted top open the facility in Kenosha County because it believed the area held values of “quality, trust and independence, coupled with the work ethic of the region and warm welcome from the community.” HARIBO said it has brought hundreds of jobs to the area, and will bring hundreds more as production grows.

HARIBO said it plans to give back to the community, too. The company said it is working with Boys & Girls Club of Kenosha, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, Carthage College and Gateway Technical College, “to provide scholarship and internship opportunities.”

“At HARIBO we think in generations. We are in the U.S. for the long-term and are honored to be part of the Pleasant Prairie community,” said Wes Saber, chief financial officer, HARIBO of America.

The facility is a multi-phase project. Right now, in the first phase, the facility includes a production facility, warehouse and administrative building. The company said new developments are in the works and are set to include expanded capacity, new technology and hundreds of additional workers.

HARIBO said in order to keep its employees, customers and partners safe, it will not offer factory tours.

ROSEMONT, Ill. , July 27, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- HARIBO® has officially begun gummi production at its first-ever North American manufacturing facility, located in Pleasant Prairie, Wis. The brand-new, state-of-the-art factory was created to meet the growing demand by American consumers of the beloved gummi brand, which produces over 25 varieties of gummi treats for the U.S. and more than 1,200 types globally.

Currently, the 500,000-square-foot factory is focused on producing HARIBO's iconic Goldbears®, with plans to expand production in the future. The facility currently employs nearly 200 Associates and produces hundreds of tons of Goldbears.

The Pleasant Prairie facility marks HARIBO's 16th factory and supports the global company's production of over 160 million Goldbears every day. The facility is a multi-phase project and this first phase includes the production facility, an administrative building and a warehouse. Future phases are in development and will include new technology, capacity and hundreds of new Associates to bring HARIBO's mission of childlike happiness to life. HARIBO's top priority is the safety of its Associates, consumers and partners, so in order to abide by food safety regulations and protect all stakeholders, the brand does not offer factory tours at this time.

"I started my career with HARIBO more than 20 years ago, and I'm so proud to be part of the team that made the dream of a U.S. factory come true," said Hakan Zor , chief production officer, HARIBO of America. "Our Associates worked tirelessly to ensure every step was taken with care, with the best quality equipment, technology and ingredients on the market. The HARIBO brand has limitless potential and producing in the U.S. is an exciting next chapter of our story."

HARIBO chose Pleasant Prairie, Wis. , located in Kenosha County , as its U.S. manufacturing location because of its shared values of quality, trust and independence, coupled with the work ethic of the region and warm welcome from the community. The factory has already brought hundreds of career opportunities to the community, with hundreds more slated as the facility continues to expand over the next several years to diversify production. Aligned with the brand's commitments to community giving, HARIBO works closely with the Boys & Girls Club of Kenosha , as well as with the University of Wisconsin-Parkside , Carthage College and Gateway Technical College , to provide scholarship and internship opportunities.

"At HARIBO we think in generations. We are in the U.S. for the long-term and are honored to be part of the Pleasant Prairie community," said Wes Saber , chief financial officer, HARIBO of America. "One of our core values is trust, and it was important for us to give back to the people of Pleasant Prairie who have welcomed us so warmly. We believe everyone deserves access to quality, affordable education so our partnerships reflect that. We're committed to creating learning and career opportunities that will drive economic development and wellness for Southeast Wisconsin ."

NEW PRODUCT LAUNCH

At the same time, the brand continues to bring excitement with innovation. As the classic Goldbears roll off the line in Pleasant Prairie , HARIBO's newest treat, produced in Germany , will join them in stores nationwide just in time for summer: Wild Berry Goldbears.

Wild Berry Goldbears are inspired by consumers' love of fruity flavors. They're the same Goldbears shapes that fans know and love, but with bursts of berry flavors: Blueberry, Wild Cherry, Strawberry, Raspberry and Wildberry.

"HARIBO fans tell us they love our texture and flavor combinations, and Wild Berry Goldbears are a nod to that for a perfect summer treat," said Rick LaBerge , chief commercial officer, HARIBO of America. "HARIBO has been the world's #1 gummi brand for over a century because we stay true to our heritage while also driving to innovate, and that's all inspired by our consumers. Right now as we're starting production in the U.S. we're focused on classic Goldbears, and we're excited to produce more of our gummi varieties including innovative new treats like Wild Berry Goldbears in the future."

HARIBO is proud to celebrate this new facility and to continue producing the world's most iconic, high quality gummi treats that inspire childlike happiness (and countless smiles) every day.

Haribo Water Tower

Image shows multiple angles of the HARIBO waterpower in pleasant prairie, Wisconsin.

The Haribo manufacturing plant recently began operations in Pleasant Prairie! While the facility may not have any public exhibits or attractions in place just yet, the bright and creative design on the nearby water tower is now complete, and even more amazing when viewed in person.

Eric Henn, a muralist and artist with over 30 years of experience in large-scale art, came to Pleasant Prairie to complete the project late Spring 2023. As a muralist, Henn is known for his  vibrant and creative designs on a variety of surfaces, from traditional wall murals to large tanks and water towers like the one recently completed in Pleasant Prairie for HARIBO.

We had the opportunity to speak with Henn about this project, his process for completing his designs,

Could you provide an overview of your process for creating the design and then actually implementing the design on the water tower?

Most of the time I work with the client and create a custom design for them. Other times I am approached by a client who already have a specific logo or design they want and just need me to paint it. The latter was the case with this project. I was happy to bring this iconic design to life with my skills as a muralist.

Otherwise the custom design creation process is a collaborative endeavor between myself and the client. The client provides me with their ideas and inspiration, often sharing images or concepts they have in mind. From there, I take those inputs and begin crafting a rendering that captures their vision. We engage in discussions and revisions until we reach a final design that satisfies their expectations.

Once the design is finalized, my focus shifts to the practical aspects of the project. I assess the amount of paint needed, select the appropriate colors, and determine the most suitable technique for transferring the design onto the chosen surface. This involves planning and strategizing to ensure a successful execution.

How did you get started in this line of work? And how long have you been painting in general, and what brought you to murals and water towers/large projects like this one?

In my early 20's, while living in Virginia Beach, I began painting surfboards, motorcycles, and billboards. One opportunity led to another when I had the chance to create a 140ft long underwater mural in a mall located in Corpus Christi. It was during this project that someone from the Citgo refinery in town noticed my work and approached me about painting a small image on one of their tanks. I ended up convincing them to let me paint the entire 17,000 square foot tank!  This experience sparked my focus on large-scale murals, particularly in industrial settings such as water towers and storage tanks.

This project is in the running for the Tnemec Tank of the Year contest. Can you tell us more about that?

Tnemec, the paint manufacturer I'm utilizing for this mural, organizes the "Tank of the Year" contest. All nominated water tanks will have their photographs featured on the contest website, allowing the general public to participate in voting for their favorite tank, aptly named "The People's Choice."

The voting phase of the contest can be quite intense, as participants are able to track the progress of their water tank design and see their ranking among the other entries. The competitive atmosphere drives communities to rally behind their respective water tanks, and it’s exciting to see the level of engagement and enthusiasm generated by the contest.

The recipient of the People's Choice award automatically becomes a contender for the official Tank of the Year title, alongside the 11 other runners-up. A panel of water tank enthusiasts will assess these finalists based on artistic value, the significance of the tank to the surrounding community, and any challenges encountered during the project.

Voting will be open to the public through an  online platform  from October 2nd to the 13th, and the winner will be announced on October 20th.

Your artwork has been featured in movies, TV, and popular publications – any that you’re able to share specifically that stands out to you?

I always get a thrill when my friends and family reach out to me, to let me know they've spotted one of my murals in a TV show, movie, or magazine. It's a special feeling to see something I've created being showcased and recognized in such a prominent medium. With the advent of social media, it has become even more amazing to discover the unexpected places where my work has been shared and appreciated. It’s opened my eyes to the widespread impact of my art.

Reasons to Visit the HARIBO Factory Store in Bonn, Germany

factory tour haribo

Germany, the land of enchanting castles, beer, festivals, Christmas markets, and much more.  But, did you know they’re known for something sweet and delicious?  Candy lovers, this post is for you, specifically gummy bear lovers out there!

Now, I normally don’t get too excited about candies, but I specifically put the HARIBO factory store on my list for a reason (we’ll get to that in a bit).  I thought this deserved its own post.  It was the perfect ending to our day trip to Bonn (psst, click here to read up on our day trip to Bonn).

This post contains affiliate links. If you purchase the items linked in this post, I earn from qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you. For more information, please read my disclaimer . Thank you for your support!

              about haribo.

Before we get to the reasons why you should visit the HARIBO Factory store, here are some interesting tidbits about the famous German company:

  • Hans Riegel founded HARIBO in Bonn, Germany, in 1920
  • The name HARIBO was derived from the founder’s first two letters of his first and last name and the first two letters of Bonn.   HA ns  RI egel,  BO nn.  Nifty, huh?
  • The company is still family-owned
  • Locations can be found here on their  website .  They have several locations in Germany.
  • I was really hoping for a tour, but sadly, they do not offer factory tours, even before Covid.  See their response on their website  here. (tip: view the site on Chrome and let the site translate the website for you).
  • I mean, you have to visit the birthplace of HARIBO, at least while in Bonn.

Reasons to Visit the HARIBO Factory                                  Store

  • The Factory store (though not the original store) is located close to the original Factory in Bonn.
  • You’re in the city where the HARIBO gummy bears were invented
  • The prices for the gummies are CHEAP ( I like that word), or rather, low in price!  I mean prices for a 200g bag of gummies were around 0,59 cent Euros to 0,85 cent Euros, depending on the flavor.  I’ve easily seen these size bags at Aldi for around 1 Euro or more.
  • It’s in Bonn, the birthplace of the one and only Beethoven!
  • The VARIETY!!!  There are so many flavors I have never seen before, some from other countries!  I even saw a flavor from the U.K. (see below for the Wine Gummy, yes, wine gummy; I don’t know if it’s really wine inside the gummy, but I’ll find out soon!)
  • The store also sells other candies besides gummies, like jelly beans, sweet and sour string candies, and more!
  • The souvenirs are pretty nifty too!
  • There are clean restrooms inside the store (it’s free)
  • It’s a fun stop in Bonn for all you candy lovers out there
  • Want to know how the gummies are made? Check out their production page here .

 final thoughts.

There you have it, some fun reasons to add the HARIBO Factory store to your Bonn list.  Is it worth the visit?  Only if you have a sweet tooth and you have a desire to visit a gummy bear store.  Plus, it’s a good excuse if you want to bring your kids along to a candy store full of sweets while in Bonn; I mean why not?   It wouldn’t hurt to visit one of the stores . The factory store itself is close to the original factory, and their prices are pretty sweet!  It’s not a bucket list location, but it’s a pretty neat stop if you are tired of sightseeing for the day and need a sweet break.

I had a very excited husband who was literally my kid in a candy store.  I think he was more excited about the low price and variety!

factory tour haribo

My kids are a bit older and were just there for the experience, lol.  I still had fun visiting the store; it’s not often you get to visit one of the OG HARIBO stores, especially in the city it originated from.

thank you for your post. it is a worth for me.

Glad I could be of help, I hope you enjoy visiting!

Hello! Thanks for the post. Is it possible to visit the Factory?

Hi! I think you can only visit the Factory Outlet store, but not the actual factory where they do the production of the products. Here is what I found on their website: https://www.haribo.com/de-de/shops-fabrikverkaeufe (link) Can I visit the production of HARIBO? Extremely high and internationally standardized hygiene and quality standards apply to the manufacture of HARIBO products. Therefore, all HARIBO production plants worldwide are certified according to FSSC 22000 (Food Safety System Certification 22000), which enjoys a high level of acceptance in international trade and stands for the highest level of quality and safety standards along the entire production and supply chain. Unfortunately, this also means that in order to protect the entire production and filling processes, no groups of visitors are allowed to be guided through the factory halls. We therefore ask all HARIBO fans for their understanding that we generally do not offer any factory tours.

I hope this helps!

Thanks for the post. I’m attending a meeting in Bonn and will definitely find time to visit another “birthplace” next to Beethoven’s. It also helped in deciding on what to bring home to my folks as souvenirs that are originals from Bonn.

I’m so glad this was helpful! Thank you for reading my blog posts! I hope you enjoy visiting Bonn! It really is a beautiful city!

Frequently Asked Questions About HARIBO

Some questions are just too good not to ask them. On this page you will find answers to the questions we are asked most often.

We do not offer tours at this time.

The safety of our Associates, vendors and partners is our number one priority. We adhere to the highest international food and quality standards, and all of our factories around the world are Food Safety System Certified (FSSC 22000). In order to maintain safety in our production and protect all stakeholders, including any potential visitors, we do not offer factory tours at this time. If you'd like to see how we make our gummies, please visit the Production section on our website.

We do not have any retail stores in the United States at this time.

Our Goldbear costume is used exclusively for HARIBO activities at events, advertising films, etc. and, unfortunately, cannot be lent to third parties.

Unfortunately we are unable to produce custom-made products at this time. Requests such as these would slow down our ability to bring childlike happiness through our everyday products that you love so much! We kindly ask for your understanding.

HARIBO believes deeply in giving back to the places where we live and work, and we partner with a number of organizations to help inspire moments of childlike happiness through our sweet treats. We receive many requests for support of very worthy causes and events, but due to our resources and capacity we cannot participate in further projects at this time.

Established in 1920 by Hans Riegel, HARIBO is the acronym that comprises our founder's name and the city in which the company was born (Bonn, Germany): HAns RIegel BOnn.

Due to different regulatory requirements, it's not possible to purchase HARIBO products from other countries. If the product you're interested in is not included in the Products section of our website, that means it's not currently available in the United States.

HARIBO products are available at retailers throughout the U.S. and online. If you have questions about where to find HARIBO in your area, please contact our Consumer Care team and we’ll be glad to help you.

Corporate Social Responsibility

At HARIBO, we have a 100 year legacy of inspiring moments of childlike happiness through our treats. We take a holistic approach to being good corporate citizens, inclusive of our Associates, customers, consumers and the environment in which we all live and work. A key part of our sustainability strategy is reducing our CO2 emissions. We pursue this in a variety of ways including energy management, reduced packaging, modern production facilities and optimization of our logistics. We're continuing to work with our community partners to achieve sustainable solutions and shape the future together.

HARIBO believes deeply in giving back the places where we live and work. We believe everyone should have access to quality, afforable education and we partner with a number of colleges in the Midwest to help in that effort. We also focus on helping children and young adults have safe spaces to learn and play and we are a proud partner of the Boys & Girls Club of Kenosha.

Since we established our business in 1920, high-quality sugar has been a key component of our products as it helps maintain their unmistakable shape and contributes to the enjoyable taste experience. HARIBO's mission is to inspire moments of childlike happiness through our sweet treats, and we believe they're just that, a treat. We all deserve to treat ourselves and sugar in moderation has a place on our plate. We offer a variety of pack types and sizes, including mini bags, which help encourage healthy portion control.

HARIBO pays special attention to its packaging. Food packaging needs to protect its contents from contamination and maintain freshness and shelf life, as required by quality and food safety regulations. As of now, 90% of all HARIBO product packaging can be recycled, which has been certified by the renowned cyclos-HTP testing institute.

HARIBO does offer a variety of Halal products. For more information, please reach out to our Consumer Care team and we’ll be glad to help you

HARIBO’s ZING Sour Streamers and ZING Sour S’ghetti are both vegetarian options.

Unfortunately, because we use ingredients containing wheat in some HARIBO products, we cannot rule out entirely the possibility that our products or the ingredients used to produce them have come into contact with products containing gluten. Our products may therefore contain traces of gluten . Please always consult the ingredients list on the product packaging. Allergens that are subject to allergen labelling guidelines appear in bold in the ingredients list.

Unfortunately, because we use dairy as an ingredient in some HARIBO products, we cannot rule out entirely the possibility that our products or the ingredients used to produce them have come into contact with products containing dairy. Our products may therefore contain traces of dairy (including lactose) . Please always consult the ingredients list on the product packaging. Allergens that are subject to allergen labelling guidelines appear in bold in the ingredients list.

In the U.S., we don’t sell bags of one specific flavor of Goldbears or any of our other gummies. We know that the variety of flavors and colors are two of the things that make HARIBO the favorite of fans around the world! We’re really sorry if you’re a fan who prefers a specific flavor or color, but at least that gives you an extra reason to share your HARIBO which is one thing that makes it so fun!

The green Goldbear is Strawberry; the yellow Goldbear is Lemon; the orange Goldbear is Orange; the red Goldbear is Raspberry; and the translucent Goldbear is Pineapple.

We're happy to offer a kosher line of HARIBO products sold exclusively through our partner, Paskesz . Our special line of kosher products are made in Austria and are clearly marked as certified kosher on the front and back of each pack.

HARIBO products are made in peanut/tree nut-free facilities and therefore do not contain peanuts or tree nuts. In addition, our manufacturing facilities and our ingredient suppliers have robust cleaning procedures and allergen controls in place to prevent any cross-contamination of other ingredients. Please contact us for more detailed questions about other allergens or sensitivities.

We recommend that our products are stored in room temperature conditions, between 55F – 77F to ensure quality remains intact. Please note that if stored at higher temperatures especially for longer periods of time, our gummies may melt and lose the character shapes our fans love so much.
