8 breathtaking fashion show locations you can actually visit

By Sarah Leigh Bannerman

The Saline of SalindeGiraud in the Southern France

Fashion Month is a time for inspiration, forward-thinking and escapism. Traditionally run to a strict schedule that sees the style set jet between New York , London , Milan and Paris , a brand must do something special to stand out. As the industry evolves, fewer labels seem wedded to city-centric venues, instead flying guests to far-flung, exotic destinations guaranteed to make an impression. This is a level of creativity that evokes bigger-picture thinking. The question of “where?” piques interest long before the invite arrives and chatter around the experience garners a level of excitement that outperforms the clothes. It’s a tact Chanel and Fendi have been flirting with for years but now Jacquemus and Christian Dior lead the charge, unveiling collections against some of the world’s most breathtaking settings .

Undiscovered, unassuming, or just plain beautiful, these are the destinations to add to your bucket list, as inspired by Fashion Week.

Models walk the runway during the Le Papier Jacquemus' Fashion Show on June 27 2022

Salin de Giraud, Camargue, France

Jacquemus (2022)

In June 2022, Simon Porte Jacquemus flew his guests to the salt mountains in Salin de Giraud, Camargue in his native South of France . The vast, scenic landscape offered a striking white backdrop for a collection aptly named ‘Le Papier’. It comprised natural fabrics and a muted, neutral colour palette. These particular ‘mountains’ may have been a set, but they were designed to mimic the region’s ever-changing landscape. Salt mining has brought big business to Camargue since the 19th century and its natural beauty is a by-product. Its uneven terrain is formed when circulated sea water evaporates and salt solidifies in layers of varying thickness. Its neighbouring Natural Park is home to pink lakes, flamingoes, and flocks of wild white horses.

Great Wall of China

Great Wall of China, China

Fendi (2007)

‘The first fashion show visible from the moon’ French art collector Bernard Arnault said about Fendi’s SS08 collection. It took place on top of the Great Wall of China, specifically on an 88-metre section of the Juyongguan Pass northwest of Beijing. The Great Wall spans a colossal 1,500 miles from end to end and is one of the largest building construction projects in world history. The runway may have governed just a fraction of its length but it made history nonetheless. Until this point, China’s spot on the fashion map was yet to be fully established. Fendi’s event welcomed 500+ guests from across the world to marvel at its striking creations displayed against the setting sun.

Paseo del Prado, Cuba

Chanel Cruise (2016)

Back in 2016, imaginative show locations (and seemingly limitless budgets) were in abundance. In May, under Karl Lagerfeld's instruction, Chanel transported 700 Cruise show guests to the balmy streets of Cuba . Models decked in Caribbean -inspired silhouettes took to the Paseo del Prado – the central promenade dividing the new city and Old Havana’s protected Baroque and neoclassical architecture. The street dates back to 1772 and is famed for being one of the only shaded places in the area. It’s lined with leafy green trees, stone benches, and the work of local artists.

Château de Chenonceau in the Loire valley

Château de Chenonceau, Loire Valley, France

Chanel (2020) Parisian powerhouse Chanel keeps things close to home for its mainline collection shows but ventures further afield for the Métiers d’Art presentations, which spotlight the ateliers that provide its trimmings, embroidery, and decorative details. The Château de Chenonceau in the Loire Valley, otherwise known as ‘Le Château des Dames’ or ‘the ladies’ chateau’, was December 2020’s location du jour. This was about more than just clothes. It was a snapshot in time presented to a single guest – Kristen Stewart – during a nationwide lockdown. The venue is an architectural marvel and the work of generations of powerful women including Catherine de’ Medici. The house and grounds are open to the public.

El Badi Palace Marrakech

El Badi Palace, Marrakech, Morocco

Christian Dior (2019)

Dior’s Cruise 2020 runway was its most comprehensive to date and its venue,  El Badi Palace  in  Marrakech , held equal significance. It was a homage to Yves Saint Laurent, who honed his skills in couture craftsmanship under the guidance of Christian Dior and spent a large portion of his life in the city. 3,000 flickering candles cast soft, romantic light across the venue and models stalked through the grounds showcasing no less than 113 looks. The building maintains an element of majesty despite its derelict nature. Initially built under the order of 16th-century Sultan Ahmed Al Mansour and paved in opulent materials, it was later robbed of its grandeur when Sultan Moulay Isma’il later ordered its gold, turquoise, and crystal to be repurposed. Today, it’s home to art and photography exhibitions. The palace walls reflect traditional  Moroccan architecture  and its grounds span eight hectares, offering a quiet retreat from the bustle of the neighbouring Medina.

Pierre Cardin Whistling Sand Mountain China

Singing Sand Dunes, Dunhuang, China

Pierre Cardin (2007)

Pierre Cardin’s SS08 runway show remains one of the most imaginative and unique destination venues to date. It took place on a winding white catwalk through the dunes of Dunhuang in China. The simplicity of its aesthetic was what made it so impactful and the designer is quoted to say it was like "showing fashion on the edge of infinity." The rolling hills can be found amid the Gobi Desert, and are nicknamed the "singing sand dunes" thanks to the musical sound they omit when the wind blows. Now a tourist destination in their own right, they attract visitors who ride buggies or camels to visit the famous Crescent Moon Lake at the base.

The Valley of the Temples Sicily

Valley of the Temples, Agrigento, Sicily

Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda (2019)

Dolce & Gabbana is famed for bringing drama to the fashion landscape. In July 2019, it hosted its Alta Moda unveiling at UNESCO World Heritage Site , the Valley of the Temples in Sicily . Comprising eight Greek temples and ruins surrounded by towering stone columns, it’s one of the island’s most famous archaeological sites. Rigorous research was done to ensure its interiors remained protected. On any normal given day, guests are able to walk the circumference but for the short time between the show and September that same year when the flooring was removed (wood laid atop a layer of sand to avoid touching the original architecture), the inside was open to the public.

The New York Public Library

New York Public Library, New York, USA

Marc Jacobs (2022) So befitting was the New York Public Library for Marc Jacobs’ 2021 show that it made a return appearance on the same date in 2022. Jacobs embodies the US capital’s uptown/downtown aesthetic and there are few brands as well placed to exhibit in one of the city’s most famous buildings. Standing proud on what was once fashion’s most thriving street, 5th Avenue, it boasts grandiose marble architecture and welcomes a flood of natural light through far-reaching arch windows. It’s open to visitors year-round and continues to operate as one of the world’s largest public libraries for residents.

Dressed Podcast: Fashion History of Paris

Group one: August 2-8, 2021

fashion travel tour

Group 2: August 9-15, 2021

August 2021

From Worth and Poiret to Chanel and Dior, see the birthplace of haute couture and explore the reason Paris remains the hub of fashion- historically and today. Join April Calahan and Cassidy Zachary, hosts of the hit podcast, Dressed: The History of Fashion, on an adventure through the fashion capital of the world! Get exclusive looks into fashion history balanced with plenty of free time to master that joie de vivre like a true Parisian.

Art, cuisine, literature, history, romance…Paris is known for so many delights! Don’t miss your chance to see the “City of Lights” with your favorite fashion historians!

Day One- Enchanté and welcome to Paris! Check into the hotel and take the afternoon to explore Paris. Join April and Cassidy at a welcome cocktail party at the hotel, where you will have the opportunity to meet your fellow travelers and collect your Dressed swag!

Day Two- What better way to kick off a fashion history tour of Paris than with a walking tour of the Rue de la Paix? This upscale shopping street is the original home of the haute couture. April and Cassidy will guide a walking tour of the history of couture on this famous fashion boulevard including a stop at the site of the House of Worth.

We follow this walking tour with a visit to the Alaia Foundation to explore couture pieces from this legendary designer.

In the afternoon, pick your favorite sidewalk café, stroll leisurely through the Tuileries, or find a spot along the banks of the Seine and watch Paris go by.

Day Three- Van Cleef and Arpels is a name synonymous with luxury. Today we start our day in Paris at the Precious Stones exhibit at the Natural History Museum, featuring pieces from the luxury jewelry designer .  Experience this incredible collection as a group before heading to the Louvre’s, Musée des Arts Décoratifs, where we will view the extensive collection of costumes and textiles beginning in the third century to modern times including Poiret, Lacroix, Dior, and more.

Stay at the Louvre for the remaining afternoon or hop over to La Samaritaine, the newly renovated and reopened department store.

Another evening free to soak up that iconic Parisian ambiance.

Day Four- No palace can rival the opulence that is Versailles and perhaps no other queen can rival its most notorious—and fashionable– resident, Marie Antoinette. Today we explore Versailles and its past inhabitants in an audio-guided tour of the main state rooms. We meet a guide who will also reveal secrets of the Grand Trianon as well as explore Marie-Antoinette’s personal hide-away, the Petite Trianon on our own. April and Cassidy will fill us in on the fashions favored by the Bourbon court before lingering over a typical French picnic on the grounds of Versailles.

Upon our return to Paris the night is yours to relax. Perhaps embark on a calming Seine river cruise and visit the booths of dealers of vintage magazines and prints which line the river.

Day Five – Enjoy a free day to experience Paris as you like.  A directory of recommended sights and activities will be provided.

Day Six – With all this talk of fashion history you will be itching to shop! April and Cassidy will take you to the flea market at Les Puces to find that perfect vintage souvenir.

This afternoon discover the Yves Saint Laurent Museum located in the former House of Yves Saint Laurent and learn all about this legendary designer’s life while viewing the current exhibit to be revealed at a later date.

Sadly, our time in Paris has come to an end. This evening we will dine as a group at a traditional Parisian bistro to say au revoir to April and Cassidy and swap contact info with new friends all while enjoying a delicious French meal.

I am doing a essay about the differences and alikes of the american and European fashion. Is there anyways you could give me some ideas and help me with this?

Alex

Hi Carolina, thank you for your question. Let me look into this for you? 🙂

Kathleen

Thanks for the great packing tips 🙂 For my backpacking trip I want to be practical and warm but still look good 😉

alex

Awesome! Glad you enjoyed it! and that’s totally doable! This packing list may help as well: https://travelfashiongirl.com/the-only-backpacking-packing-list-for-europe-youll-ever-need/

Abigail dowell

This is so helpful as I plan a trip to Europe this summer!

Travel Fashion Girl

Hi, Will be travelling to eastern europe on Feb..will be very cold from where I came from ;)..need advice on the must-have clothes & shoes..tqvm

alex

Hi there! The best thing is to read our full guide on what to pack for Europe: https://travelfashiongirl.com/the-only-backpacking-packing-list-for-europe-youll-ever-need/ This has all the information you need to know. Hope you have a great trip!

Carolyne

Help! My husband and I will be making our first trip to Europe late September (Germany, Switzerland and Austria) . . . 2 weeks. I need help with the shoes/clothes thing. Fancy dinner restaurants probably won’t bee found on the agenda. From what I have found, the weather is “typically” in the 60’s by day, and 40-50 at night. I’m in my 50’s but not geriatric . . . I like to be fashionable. Any suggestions would be so appreciated.

Hi Carolyne! The weather average sounds about right so layers will be your best friend. This is the most thorough information we have available: https://travelfashiongirl.com/10-step-packing-guides/10-step-packing-guide-europe/

Have a look at that guide and I’ll also post your question on Facebook to get you more feedback too. Stay tuned for traveler replies here: facebook.com/travelfashiongirl

Shaziane

I’m planning to go to university in Russia for the next 5 years (without returning home until the end). I’ve never been outside of the Caribbean and I have also never had to pack for myself either. (The last time I travel was 16 years ago when I was 9.) Can you assist me?

Hi Shaziane, thanks for your comment! I’ve never been to Russia so I’ll post your question on my facebook page today to get feedback from other travelers. Please keep an eye out here: https://www.facebook.com/TravelFashionGirl Thanks!

Rhiannon

Would Poitiers in July be the same packing-wise as Paris in summer?

Hi Rhiannon, that’s a great question. I’ll post it on TFG’s Facebook for you to see if we can get some feedback from any travelers that have been. Keep an eye out for replies! http://www.facebook.com/travelfashiongirl

Travel + Leisure / Madison Woiten

While I love my hectic travel schedule, it’s a constant struggle to find new comfy styles that look good, pack easily, and are versatile enough to style in fresh ways. With several summer trips on the horizon, I’ve been on the hunt for dresses, pants, and walking shoes that fit the bill.

Luckily, Nordstrom just dropped tons of summer pieces from shopper-loved brands like Free People, Sam Edelman, and more. I’m grabbing linen pants , lightweight cardigans , and slide sandals to pack for my three upcoming trips while they’re on sale. Keep scrolling to browse the 13 designs I’m adding to my own cart for up to 50 percent off.

  • Billabong Wild Pursuit Short Overalls , $40 (originally $56)
  • Steve Madden Amy Square Neck Wide-Leg Jumpsuit , $70 (originally $99)
  • Marc Fisher LTD Espina Mary Jane Flat , $70 (originally $120)
  • Caslon Wide-Leg Linen Blend Pants , $45 (originally $59)
  • Caslon Stripe Wide-Leg Linen Blend Pants , $45 (originally $59)
  • Sam Edelman Bridget Slide Sandal , $50 (originally $130)
  • Free People Robyn Cotton Blend Crop Cardigan , from $59 (originally $98)
  • Sam Edelman Bay Cutout Slide Sandal , $84 (originally $120)
  • Free People Freddie Stripe Oversize Button-Up Shirt , from $77 (originally $128)
  • Sam Edelman Kara 2 Slingback Flats , $98 (originally $140)
  • Topshop Wide-Leg Trousers , $45 (originally $60)
  • B.P. Twill Short Overalls , $30 (originally $60)
  • Faherty Dream Organic Cotton Gauze Midi Dress , $120 (originally $218)

B.P. Twill Short Overalls

Overalls are a fun style to mix in when you’ve tired of the same flowy dresses in your suitcase. This 60 percent-off design is no exception. In fact, they have a five-star rating, which shoppers chalked up to their “large deep pockets” and “comfortable material.” One person even added that they “can’t wait to wear” the overalls on their “next trip.” The cotton-spandex fabric has the perfect stretch and oversized feel, while the square neck and adjustable straps make it a flattering choice.

Caslon Stripe Wide-Leg Linen Blend Pants

Everyone needs a casual yet comfy pair of linen pants, especially if you’re heading to a beach this summer. While I’m a fan of several Caslon wide-leg styles, including this classic black pair from the brand, this striped linen blend design is at the top of my wish list right now. One customer called them the “perfect” summer pants and said they’re planning to pack them for “Europe this summer,” while another added that the “material is nicer” than other linen styles they own and doesn’t “appear to wrinkle.”

Sam Edelman Bay Cutout Slide Sandal

For as long as I can remember, these Sam Edelman slides have been a staple in my summer wardrobe. In fact, I’ved owned the sandals in three different colors. They’re so easy to toss on when you’re headed out the door, and the design offers an elevated look. Plus, the style comes in nine on-sale colors as well as six full-priced shades. Shoppers raved about the “comfortable” shoes, and said they have “enough cushion and support for easy walking.

Faherty Dream Organic Cotton Gauze Midi Dress

This organic cotton midi dress was practically made for summer travel. The breezy style is so easy to toss on after a day at the beach or to wear during a flight. The V-neck provides a flattering design while the three-quarter sleeves add a little extra coverage for chillier summer nights. The on-sale white color is easy to style for any occasion: You can dress it up with a pair of heels and accessories, or toss on casual sneakers or sandals for a low-key evening.

Head over to Nordstrom’s site to shop the sale for yourself, or keep reading for more of my personal favorites, including breezy pants, comfy sandals, and more.
