Explore the waters on a galveston fishing charter.

Galveston is Texas’s very own fishing Mecca. The town is surrounded by more types of waterways than you can shake a stick at. The Gulf of Mexico, inshore inlets, piers, reefs, pristine shorelines, and protected bays, it's got them all. And guess what? With such a wide array of habitats comes a litany of marine life. From big game fish – including none other than sharks – to plenty of species fit for dockside dining or a local fish fry, there's something out there for every angler. In fact, Galveston has most types of fishing known to man. What are you waiting for?

Did You Know? The first Saturday in June each year is Free Fishing Day state-wide!

Fishing in Galveston

If such an abundance of fishing options seems daunting, fear not. These are the main types of fishing in Galveston, and you can't go wrong with any.

fishing boat tours galveston

The open ocean, wind running through your hair, and the potential of a giant sea monster – what more could you want. An offshore fishing charter in Galveston is something to behold. One can start only a stone’s throw from the coastline, as there are still plenty of fish in the shallower waters. However, depending on your charter length and captain, it's better to get yourself approximately 30 miles out to sea. This is where offshore fishing really begins. These waters are home to angler favorites: King and Spanish Mackerel, Cobia, Sharks, and more. Dare to travel out even further and you might find yourself facing big Snapper, Wahoo, and Marlin.

fishing boat tours galveston

Like fish but can't stomach the high seas? No problem. Inshore fishing is a blast. In fact, Galveston was rated by Saltwater Sportsman Magazine as number three on its list of Top 10 Saltwater fishing locations in the United States. With such a long coastline, there are plenty of great inshore spots to bag your catch of the day. Your best bets when the seas are rough may be a range of sheltered bays accessible from Galveston Island State Park, Pelican Island, and Seawolf Park. For pier fishing, there is also the 61st and Galveston Fishing Pier to consider. Plus old-timers are always on hand to teach you a trick or two should you wish.

Fishing License Requirements

Unlike many other states, fishing charters in Texas do not typically cover your fishing licenses. What this means is that, if you are over 17 years old, you will need to purchase a Texas fishing permit before you get out on the water. This applies to state residents and non-residents alike. If you only wish to fish for a single day, there is a One-Day All-Water License that lets you fish fresh and saltwater on a day of your choice. You can also buy longer-term or annual licenses if planning to fish multiple days or on a longer expedition. Fishing licenses are available at approximately 1,700 locations throughout the state. This includes, but is by no means limited to, sporting goods stores, gun shops, department stores, discount stores, bait and tackle shops, and grocery stores.

Best Places to Fish in Galveston

With such a fantastic array of fishing spots, it's hard to choose, right? Don’t worry, we've got you covered. Check out these top fishing spots below. We promise they'll leave you with plenty of fishy tales.

fishing boat tours galveston

The Gulf of Mexico

Of course, the Gulf of Mexico. This sublime body of water is a treasure trove for anglers. Southeasterly breezes pull fish towards the shore, while jetties, piers, and submerged structures, plus over thirty miles of beach mean it is easy to reel in a fish – that is, if you decide to stay close to the shore. Further offshore, some real whoppers are to be had. Anglers in this stretch of water regularly reel in Cobia, Wahoo, Tuna, Mahi Mahi, Red Snapper, Kingfish, Marlin, and Shark. Be on the lookout for artificial reefs, shipwrecks, and oil rigs, these waters are dotted with thousands of them.

East and West Flower Garden Banks

If you're willing to make the journey – the Banks are 100 miles from Galveston – this place is the Garden of Eden. Recently expanded from 56 square miles to 160, this wildlife sanctuary is made up of 17 different reefs and banks. Conventional hook and line fishing is the only form of fishing allowed in the sanctuary. However, you will see a plethora of species. There’s Barracuda, Bluehead and yellowhead Wrasses, Butterflyfish Groups, plus a whole host of other species. This truly is a fantastic place to lay down a line.

fishing boat tours galveston

Galveston State Park

Galveston Island State Park provides a range of great opportunities for anglers. On the beachside, it's possible to wade into the surf and fish at your leisure. What you will catch depends a lot on the time, tide, wind direction, and, of course, how tasty your bait is. Nevertheless, Speckled Trout, Redfish, and Flounder can all be caught from the beach over the course of a year. Seasonal visitors include Mackerel, Ladyfish, and Trophy-sized Drum.

Tips for Fishing in Galveston

Here are three recommendations for preparing for a fishing trip out of Galveston.

Charter Capacity

Charters in Galveston range mostly from $199 to $2,500. Many are captained for 3, 4, 6, or up to 12 passengers.

Bait and Tackle

If booking a charter, your captain will have exactly what’s needed for the fish you want to target. Going on your own? You can get more information from local bait and tackle shops, or look for other help online.

Tip / Gratuity

When booking a fishing charter, remember to come prepared with cash since gratuity is expected for most captains and/or their first mates helping on the trip.

Popular Species in Galveston

Mackerel, Marlin, and Sailfish – they're all here. In fact, Galveston hosts an immense diversity of fish, which tag each other out in terms of the fishing season across the year. See the main targets below.

fishing boat tours galveston

Red Snapper

Snappy by name, snapper by nature. Red Snapper promise an exciting battle. And if you manage to land one, they're tasty too.

fishing boat tours galveston

The most common Sharks in Galveston are Blacktips, Tiger Sharks, and Hammerheads. For the best chances to catch one, time your visit between late May and September.

fishing boat tours galveston

Flounder are an angler's favorite. Not much of a looker, what Flounder lacks in beauty, it more than makes up for it in their cunning and flavor.

Types of Fishing to Try in Galveston

Although it might be the Lone Star State, Texas gets five stars when it comes to fishing.

fishing boat tours galveston

Love archery and fishing? Bowfishing involves – you guessed it – firing a bow and arrow at fish from the boat. If this sounds simple to you, then think again. Bowfishing is a special challenge that requires skill and precision. Although less popular than more orthodox techniques, such as casting and gigging, bowfishing for Flounder is guaranteed to satisfy your adrenaline fix of the year.

fishing boat tours galveston

Spearfishing

Spearfishing is not for the faint-hearted. In the world-famous Gulf of Mexico to shallower waters, spearfishing in Texas is a sure way to get your blood pumping. You'll come face to face with some big fish. And by that, we mean REALLY big fish. Most notable of which are Tuna and Mahi Mahi. However, if you fancy something smaller, but no less thrilling, why not dive into shallower waters and hunt some Redfish, Snappers, and Speckled Trout.

fishing boat tours galveston

Shark fishing

Since the dawn of recreational saltwater fishing, Sharks have occupied the minds of anglers the world over. And there is nothing like trying to bag yourself a Shark in Galveston. In fact, local anglers have transformed Shark fishing into a sport of its own – worthy of the Olympics. Yet its definition is hotly contested. For many anglers, Shark fishing is about hooking a monster far out at sea. While for others it is more about using your craftiness and strength on the shore. Where do you stand?

Galveston Fishing Seasons

Unsurprisingly, the climate in Texas provides opportunity to fish year-round. Many species such as sharks can be caught throughout the year. That said, there are certain limitations imposed on some fish species and water activities at given times of the year. Red Snapper, for instance, opens in June and closes in August. Flounder have a limited rest period between November and December.

Greg is a great guy that cares about giving you a good time, while also protecting the environment from which he makes a living. Greg, and his deckhand Kyle, gave my friend and I an experience we won't soon forget - the sail out to our spot alone, as the sun was rising, was worth the trip. On top of that, we hooked more than 20 fish between the two of us in just 4 hours - due, no doubt, to a combination of Greg's knowledge of the area, and some good old luck. We bagged a few - some of which made for great fish tacos on the grill that night. In all I would very warmly recommend Fishing Galveston TX - I will be back to experience some flounder gigging with the captain in the near future. If you are in doubt, like I was, just give the captain a call. You'll know you are in the right place. read less Morten W. 5/24/2015

ABSOLUTELY SUPER

Had an absolutely super time last weekend. We went for the 5 hour jetty and bay fishing trip. We caught about 25-30 pieces of fish including Croaker, Whiting, Catfish and Shark - including a 40 lb,4 ft big sand shark whom we released after catching. I was really impressed by the care the staff took to ensure that everyone of us was really enjoying the trip. His knowledge and attention to detail was simply great! Lot of attention to properly filleting the fish as well after .

Barge hits a bridge in galveston, damaging the structure and causing an oil spill, aerial video showed portions of a rail line on top of the barge.

Associated Press

GALVESTON, Texas – A barge slammed into a bridge pillar in Galveston, Texas, on Wednesday, spilling oil into surrounding waters and closing the only road to a smaller and separate island that is home to a university, officials said. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

The bridge that leads to Pelican Island, north of Galveston, was struck by the barge around 9:50 a.m. when a tugboat backing out of Texas International Terminals, a fuel storage operator located next to the bridge, lost control of two barges it was pushing, said David Flores, a bridge superintendent with the Galveston County Navigation District.

“The current was very bad, and the tide was high. He lost it,” Flores said.

One of the barges hit the bridge and two telephone poles, he said.

The tugboat was pushing what are called bunker barges, which are fuel barges for ships, Flores said. The collision resulted in oil spilling from the barge into the bay and crews were working to clean it up, he said.

Aerial video showed portions of a rail line that runs parallel to the bridge on top of the barge. Flores said the rail line only serves as protection for the structure and has never been used.

Pelican Island, which is connected to Galveston by the bridge, is home to a large shipyard, Texas A&M University of Galveston, and Seawolf Park, a former immigration station that now attracts tourists to its iconic fishing pier and decommissioned U.S. Navy vessels.

The accident came weeks after a cargo ship crashed into a support column of the Francis Key Bridge in Baltimore on March 26, killing six construction workers.

Fire trucks drove over the bridge to Pelican Island on Wednesday as workers and law enforcement officials looked at the remnants of the collapsed rail line. Aerial footage showed a large piece of broken concrete and debris from the railroad hanging off the side of the bridge and laying on the barge that officials said rammed into the passageway.

A statement posted on the City of Galveston's Facebook page said there were no reports of injuries and that the island is currently inaccessible to car traffic.

“Engineers from the Texas Department of Transportation are also enroute to inspect the roadway and determine if there is damage,” the statement said. “The bridge will remain closed until it is deemed safe to use.”

One business, Baywatch Dolphin Tours, said they were seeking the university's approval to shuttle people off the island and were planning how to provide a long-term service while bridge repairs are underway.

Opened in 1960, the Pelican Island Causeway Bridge was rated as “Poor” according to the Federal Highway Administration’s 2023 National Bridge Inventory released last June.

The overall rating of a bridge is based on whether the condition of any of its individual components — the deck, superstructure, substructure or culvert, if present — is rated poor or below.

In the case of the Pelican Island Causeway Bridge, inspectors rated the deck in “Satisfactory Condition,” the substructure in “Fair Condition” and the superstructure — or the component that absorbs the live traffic load — in “Poor Condition.”

The bridge has one main steel span that measures 164 feet (50 meters), and federal data shows it was last inspected in December 2021. However, it’s unclear from the data if a state inspection took place after the Federal Highway Administration compiled the data.

The bridge had an average daily traffic figure of about 9,100, according to a 2011 estimate.

GALVESTON, Texas (AP) — A barge slammed into a bridge pillar in Galveston, Texas, on Wednesday, spilling oil into waters near busy shipping channels and closing the only road to a small neighboring island. No injuries were reported.

The impact sent pieces of the bridge, which connects Galveston to Pelican Island, tumbling on top of the barge and shut down a stretch of waterway so crews could clean up the spill. The accident knocked one man off the vessel and into the water, but he was quickly recovered and was not injured, said Galveston County Sheriff’s Office Maj. Ray Nolen.

Ports along the Texas coast are hubs of international trade, but experts said the collision was unlikely to result in serious economic disruptions since it occurred in a lesser-used waterway. The island is on the opposite side of Galveston Island’s beaches that draw millions of tourists each year.

The accident happened shortly before 10 a.m. after a tugboat operator pushing two barges lost control of them, said David Flores, a bridge superintendent with the Galveston County Navigation District.

“The current was very bad, and the tide was high,” Flores said. “He lost it.”

Pelican Island is only a few miles wide and is home to Texas A&M University at Galveston, a large shipyard and industrial facilities. Fewer than 200 people were on the campus when the collision happened, and all were eventually allowed to drive on the bridge to leave. The marine and maritime research institute said it plans to remain closed until at least Friday. Students who live on campus were allowed to remain there, but university officials warned those who live on campus and leave “should be prepared to remain off campus for an unknown period of time.”

The accident came weeks after a cargo ship crashed into a support column of the Francis Key Bridge in Baltimore on March 26, killing six construction workers.

The tugboat in Texas was pushing bunker barges, which are fuel barges for ships, Flores said. The barge, which is owned by Martin Petroleum, has a 30,000-gallon capacity, but it’s not clear how much leaked into the bay, said Galveston County spokesperson Spencer Lewis. He said about 6.5 miles (10.5 kilometers) of the waterway were shut down because of the spill.

The affected area is miles away from the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, which sees frequent barge traffic, and the Houston Ship Channel, a large shipping channel for ocean-going vessels. Aside from the environmental impact of the spill, the region is unlikely to see large economic disruption as a result of the accident, said Marcia Burns, a maritime transportation expert at the University of Houston

“Because Pelican Island is a smaller location, which is not in the heart of commercial events, then the impact is not as devastating,” Burns said. “It’s a relatively smaller impact.”

At the bridge, a large piece of broken concrete and debris from the railroad hung over the side and on top of the barge that rammed into the passageway. Flores said the rail line only serves as protection for the structure and has never been used.

The Texas Department of Transportation had been scheduled in the summer of 2025 to begin construction on a project to replace the bridge with a new one. The project was estimated to cost $194 million. In documents provided during a virtual public meeting last year, the department said the bridge has “reached the end of its design lifespan, and needs to be replaced.” The agency said it has spent over $12 million performing maintenance and repairs on the bridge in the past decade.

The bridge has one main steel span that measures 164 feet (50 meters), and federal data shows it was last inspected in December 2021. It’s unclear from the data if a state inspection took place after the Federal Highway Administration compiled the data.

The bridge had an average daily traffic figure of about 9,100 cars and trucks, according to a 2011 estimate.

Lozano reported from Houston. Associated Press reporters Christopher L. Keller in Albuquerque, New Mexico; Valerie Gonzalez in McAllen, Texas; Acacia Coronado in Austin, Texas; and Ken Miller in Oklahoma City contributed to this report.

It moves pot to Schedule III, alongside some anabolic steroids. The U.S. Cannabis Council trade group applauds the proposed change.

Boat strike causes oil spill, partial collapse of bridge between Galveston and Pelican Island, Texas

HOUSTON, TX — A barge slammed into a bridge pillar in Galveston, Texas, on Wednesday, spilling oil into surrounding waters and closing the only road to a smaller and separate island that is home to a university, officials said. There were no immediate reports of injuries, although officials said one person on the barge was knocked into the water and quickly rescued.

The bridge that leads to Pelican Island, north of Galveston, was struck by the barge around 9:50 a.m. when a tugboat backing out of Texas International Terminals, a fuel storage operator next to the bridge, lost control of two barges it was pushing, said David Flores, a bridge superintendent with the Galveston County Navigation District.

“The current was very bad, and the tide was high. He lost it,” Flores said.

One of the barges hit the bridge and two telephone poles, he said.

The accident came weeks after a cargo ship crashed into a support column of the Francis Key Bridge in Baltimore on March 26, killing six construction workers.

The accident Wednesday knocked one man off the vessel and into the water, but he was quickly recovered and was not injured, said Galveston County Sheriff’s Office Maj. Ray Nolen.
