Phoenix Summer: Flashlight Tours at Desert Botanical Garden
We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. Please see policies for more information.
Everyone knows that summers are HOT in Phoenix. Staying by the pool is a perfect choice for the middle of the day but once the sun goes down, we love to venture out. Desert Botanical Garden is having flashlight tours throughout the summer and we had to check them out! The evenings bring out different animals, sights and lots of new sounds so it’s a great time to visit the Garden.
We arrived when it was still light out so we got to enjoy some of the plants in daylight.
The BEST part for me was being there to see the sun set!
It is a self guided tour so you can go at your own (or your kids’) pace. You do need to bring your own flashlights or buy one in the gift shop. We were walking behind a little boy around 4 years old who was having a BLAST checking out the stuff we found with our flashlight like frogs, toads and lizards.
There are stations set up to interact with guests, give fun facts and information, and just add to the fun of the event. Kids will love looking for plants and animals with flashlights (because who doesn’t), amazing stargazing, a fun area to cool off, putting together and playing in a tent, practicing building a fire and learning about the desert through fun activities and exploration.
There are lots of great restaurants nearby so make it a night out with dinner, flashlight tours and then some ice cream! The flashlight tours are running Thursday and Saturday nights (until September 2nd) from 7-9:30pm. If the weather has been iffy you can check the Garden’s website to make sure they are still holding the flashlight tours that evening. They also post updates on their Facebook page if you want to check there first as well.

Flashlight Tours
We had visited the Desert Botanical Gardens 5-6 years ago and really enjoyed that visit. This trip friends took us on a Saturday night for a Flashlight Tours. (also Thursdays) Gardens are open from 7-9 for the Flashlight Tours, which are self-guided. Flashlights are provided if you do not have one. Stations are set up around the gardens with knowledgeable volunteers to explain desert life and plants, and with activities for children. My 10 & 8 year olds enjoyed the gardens. It is a little cooler once the sun goes down (approx. 7:30) and the gardens take on a different feel at night. We were lucky that several cactus where blooming that night, since they only bloom once at night.
A great place to see all the wonderful plants, cactus of the desert and to learn about and purchase some interesting plants. Great scenery and a wonderful place to visit and tour during the holidays at night with the garden lit up for the holidays.
Check their events. I highly recommend Luminarias, around Christmas time.
I loved learning about the desert habitats and the animals that call Arizona home.
very interesting to see all the desert flora. Everything is marked and the paths easy to follow.
The garden is one of our favorite places in Phoenix. We first visited about 12 years ago when we were still living in Wisconsin and were wowed by the palo verde trees which were abloom in dazzling yellow at the time. Now that we live in Scottsdale, we visit the garden often, specially when the cacti are in bloom. From March to May there is always something blooming and it is gorgeous. Even without anything blooming, though, just walking in the garden is so relaxing, as long as it's not 100 degrees out there. Same thing when the butterfly exhibits are going on - my husband could spend hours taking pictures; I just enjoy sitting on the bench and watching the butterflies and people go by. There are trails off the main desert discovery trail that make you feel you're actually walking in the desert and also learn about how the trees, shrubs and bushes were used by the Indians. Since we started visiting there have been many improvements and there are now many newer trails that allow you to discover more plant exhibits. An audioguide included in the entrance fee allows you to learn more about the plants. It is a wild area and you commonly see hares and lots of birds including quail, roadrunners, hummingbirds, etc. The gift shop was a great source for gardening books and information, though it's closed till November because of construction of a restaurant and new gift shop. The cactus and succulent society hold an annual show here and you can see some amazing specimens then. This garden is definitely worth a visit. Go early or late even in the summer and you can still have a lovely time.
