Fort Sumter Tours: How to Visit the Fort Sumter National Monument and Patriots Point

13509131_588290491344178_4304955568096021215_n

Fort Sumter National Monument and Patriots Point are two Charleston attractions that are popular with history buffs, nature lovers, and photographers. While the exhibits at Fort Sumter focus mostly on Civil War history, the attractions at Patriots Point revolve primarily around the history of World War II and the Vietnam War.

You can take Fort Sumter tours or visit on your own.

Patriots Point and Fort Sumter National Monument can be visited in tandem or separately. Yet many visitors choose to visit them on the same day because Fort Sumter can be reached from Patriots Point by the Ferry to Fort Sumter. There is also a water taxi that shuttles passengers to Patriots Point from Downtown Charleston.

Fort Sumter Tours: Visiting the Island

fort sumter tour patriots point

Fort Sumter National Monument is one of the most popular historic attractions in Charleston. The site of the shots fired that marked the official start of the Civil War, Fort Sumter is a physical reminder of the events leading up to this moment. Built just after the War of 1812, the fort also features exhibits on its design.

Why Visit Fort Sumter National Monument

Not only was this the site of the start of the Civil War, but it was also the site of the Second Battle of Fort Sumter in 1863, where the Union Army attempted to reclaim control over the fort. Visitors can learn about the military history of the island while appreciating stunning views of Patriots Point, Downtown Charleston, and the Ravenel Bridge.

How to Get to Fort Sumter

fort sumter tour patriots point

The only way to get to Fort Sumter is by boat. One company, Fort Sumter Tours , runs the ferries that shuttle passengers to and from the island via Downtown Charleston at Liberty Square or from across the harbor at Patriots Point. The ferry to Fort Sumter ride is 30 minutes long each way, and ferry schedules vary throughout the year but generally run several times a day from Downtown Charleston and at least once a day from Patriots Point.

What to See at Fort Sumter National Monument

Once you arrive on the island, you’ll have 60 minutes to tour the fort and surrounding areas. A National Parks ranger will greet you at the island and offer a general overview of the island’s history and attractions. Fort Sumter Tours offers a full island tour for an additional fee.

Food and Drink

The ferry to Fort Sumter has a snack bar, but there is no food sold on this island. There are several water fountains on the island where you can fill up a water bottle.

How to Visit Patriots Point

fort sumter tour patriots point

Patriots Point is home to the USS Yorktown, an aircraft carrier that served in both World War II and the Vietnam War. The carrier is docked at a naval and maritime museum that offers visitors a glimpse into the history of an aircraft carrier, a battleship, and a submarine. Anyone interested in naval history will appreciate a visit to Patriots Point.

Why Visit Patriots Point

In addition to the USS Yorktown, you’ll get the chance to see the USS Laffey, a battleship, and the USS Clamagore, a submarine. All three vessels can be toured, and there are plenty of photo opportunities in each one. Both adults and kids find the living quarters impressive on these vessels — especially the barber shop and mess hall.

How to Get to Patriots Point

fort sumter tour patriots point

If you have a car, you might want to take a drive to Patriots Point. Only about 10 minutes from Downtown Charleston, the drive is worth it. Crossing over the impressive Ravenel Bridge is an attraction unto itself.

If you don’t have a car, don’t worry — you can get to Patriots Point via the Charleston Water Taxi too. It departs once an hour and takes a little over 30 minutes to reach the other side. You can also choose to stay on the ferry to Fort Sumter for the entire route, which takes approximately 60 minutes. A local company also offers helicopter rides to and from Patriots Point.

What to See at Patriots Point

The biggest attraction at Patriots Point is the maritime museum that features three vessels:

  • USS Yorktown
  • USS Glamagore

There are also a few other attractions that appeal to visitors, including:

  • Cold War Memorial
  • Waterfront park and pier
  • Patriot Point Links golf course

You should plan to spend at least three hours here if you want ample time to visit all three vessels and time to take photos of the surrounding areas.

Food and Drink Near Patriots Point

There are plenty of places to grab a bite to eat while you’re at Patriots Point — and one of them even offers great views of the water! Whether you’re looking for a quick bite or a sit-down meal, you can enjoy some authentic Lowcountry cuisine at these three spots.

Page’s Okra Grill

Comfort food doesn’t need frills, bells, or whistles. When it’s good, you can just taste it. For those looking for a little more substance (at a lower price point), Page’s Okra Grill serves up some stick-to-your-ribs comfort without putting on its fancy pants.

You’ll find some classics, like fried chicken and waffles, fried green tomatoes, pimento cheese, and shrimp and grits here. Most dishes are between $5 and $9.

Graze Restaurant

For a more “elevated” experience that doesn’t take itself too seriously, go to Graze. The minimalist décor is still homey and features plenty of clean, crisp lines and muted colors. Menu items include lobster mac and cheese, spicy tuna tataki, and crispy chicken livers. Most meals are served with a side of hand-cut pomme frites.

The Bridge Bar

If you want to enjoy some lighter fare or a cocktail, head to the Bridge Bar at the Charleston Harbor Resort & Marina. From here, you’ll get fabulous views of the Ravenel Bridge, USS Yorktown, and Downtown Charleston. You can also nosh on fresh fish, crisp salads, and homemade soups — including the local she-crab soup!

If you are headed back to Charleston after your trip to Fort Sumter or Patriot’s Point and are craving more history, you will have plenty of time to join us on one of our afternoon walking tours.  The Charleston History Tour leaves from City Hall at 2 pm and our Alleys & Hidden Passages Tour leaves from the Old Exchange Building at the same time.

If you’re not ready to head back to city life after your trip to Patriots Point and Fort Sumter tour, head further inland to Shem Creek and Sullivan’s Island.  These areas offer water sports, some of the best beaches in South Carolina, and even more restaurant options.  Stay tuned for our next blog post with details!

How To Visit Fort Sumter (Guided Tour Vs Self-Guided)

November 25, 2023 //  by  Southern Trippers

Planning on visiting Fort Sumter Charleston? Here you will find a first-hand experience of touring the grounds! Enjoy a visit during a weekend in Charleston , or maybe you want to explore the city for longer and plan for a whole week.

Fort Sumter is located in Charleston, South Carolina, and is best known as a significant structure of American history. It was the first battle of the Civil War and this sea fort has witnessed events that shaped America’s story.

Come along as I take you through what to expect when you are planning a visit to Fort Sumter!

History of Fort Sumter

The first thing to know before you go is the history! This post is divided into different headings, so if the history doesn’t interest you, you can skip ahead! To me, this is the best part about visiting.

The historical significance of Fort Sumter has become a name that will always remain in American history. This fort is located on a man-made island near Charleston Harbor in South Carolina. Exploring here is one of the best places to visit Charleston .

The construction of Fort Sumter started back in 1829, a time when the United States started investing heavily in fortifications after the War of 1812.

The fort was named after Thomas Sumter, a Revolutionary War hero and one of South Carolina’s famous sons. It was an engineering advancement of its time. It was built from thousands of tons of granite and bricks. With its five-sided layout and an interior large enough to house 650 defenders and 135 guns, it became a symbol of American military strength.

However, Fort Sumter is most famously known as the start of the American Civil War. On December 20, 1860, South Carolina became the first state to secede from the Union.

Five days later the federal troops stationed in Charleston moved into Fort Sumter. Which effectively turned it into a Union stronghold in Confederate territory and started the battle of Fort Sumter.

The tensions came to a head on April 12, 1861, when the Confederacy fired on the US garrison of Fort Sumter. These first shots marked the official beginning of the American Civil War. Which lasted four years and cost the lives of more than 620,000 Americans.

Duration of the Visit: A typical visit to Fort Sumter, including the ferry ride to and from the island, takes about 2-3 hours. The boat ride through the stunning Charleston Harbor is one of the things to do in Charleston!

Accessibility at Fort Sumter: Fort Sumter has accessibility for all visitors. There is a lift at the fort for those with mobility issues. However, it is still recommended to tell Fort Sumter Tours on the day of your visit for any specific accessibility needs.

Thinking is Fort Sumter worth a visit? The answer is always yes! The best times are during the spring and Fall in South Carolina !

Reservations and Tickets For Fort Sumter

Do you need a reservation for Fort Sumter? While it’s not mandatory to make a reservation for visiting Fort Sumter, it is highly advised. Buying your ferry tickets online in advance on the day of your visit will help ensure your place. Keep in mind that tour times vary depending on the season you are visiting.

Getting inside of Fort Sumter itself is free. But getting the ferry ride does have a small cost. Tickets for the ferry can be bought both at the departure locations as well as online.

But, due to the popularity of the Fort and the limited space of the ferry. It’s highly recommended to book your tickets in advance to ensure you get reservations for Fort Sumter on the right date.

In addition to the regular tours, you can also choose to add on extras like a sunset dinner cruise around Charleston Harbor.

Once you reach the fort, you’re free to explore the national monument and its museum at your own pace. If you plan to visit the nearby Fort Moultrie, keep in mind that there is a separate fee.

Tour Of Fort Sumter vs. Guided Tour

When planning your visit, one of the top questions is, can you go to Fort Sumter without a tour? And the answer is yes! You will have the choice between a Fort Sumter guided tour vs self-tour.

I have done both types of tours, and the best choice for you will depend on your personal preferences, how much time you have, and your interests.

Self-Guided Tour

A self-guided tour of Fort Sumter allows you to explore the fort at your own pace. You will receive a brochure when you arrive with a map of the site and information about the points of interest. This type of tour is great if you prefer a slower pace, want to stop for photos and enjoy the history without being rushed.

You can also learn more about the fort by visiting its museum, which has numerous exhibits about the Civil War and the fort’s history. There is plenty to learn and read while exploring Fort Sumter without a tour.

Guided Tour

On the other hand, booking tickets for Fort Sumter guided tour offers a more insider experience. You will be led by a knowledgeable guide, these tours provide very detailed information about Fort Sumter and its role in the Civil War.

The guides often share fascinating stories and lesser-known facts that will not be on the signs.

Also, guided tours typically follow a set route and schedule, which will help you see all the key points. However, they may not offer as much freedom to explore independently.

a great look at the fort from the inside. you can see the ocean full of boats in the back round and the green grass on the side.

Practical Tips For Touring Fort Sumter

When planning your visit there are several things to do at Fort Sumter to make the most of your trip.

Transportation

The only way to get to Fort Sumter is by boat. Ferries are operated by Fort Sumter Tours and actually depart from two locations. They are the Liberty Square in Charleston and Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant. It’s a good idea to secure your ferry tickets in advance as they do sell out fast.

Nearby Attractions

Your trip to Fort Sumter could be paired with other nearby attractions for a full day of exploration. For instance, Patriots Point, one of the ferry departure points, is also home to the Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum. Here you can tour the USS Yorktown and other historic naval ships.

There are also plenty of beaches in Charleston nearby to explore!

Food Options

Unfortunately, there are no food services at Fort Sumter. But you are allowed to bring small coolers with snacks and drinks! There are water fountains available for refilling your reusable water bottles. You have to pack out all of your trash because there are no trash cans on the island.

You could always fill up at one of the best restaurants in Charleston before you head out on your tour of Fort Sumter.

Photography Tips

Fort Sumter offers so many great opportunities for amazing photography. If you have a wide-angle lens it would be the best lens to bring. It will help capture the entire fort and its surroundings! The lighting conditions are typically best in the early morning or late afternoon.

You will want to avoid the harsh mid-day sun if you can! If you head to the fort early in the morning you could always enjoy a good brunch in Charleston afterward!

Time Spent at Fort Sumter

When visiting Fort Sumter Charleston you may be wondering, how long should you spend at Fort Sumter? You will want to plan to carve out about 3 hours. This includes the ferry ride to and from the island. This gives you enough time for the 30-minute ferry ride each way and at least one hour on the island to explore.

Fort Sumter holds a special significance in the course of US history. It was this relatively unassuming military post where the Civil War began in earnest. Today, it is a popular attraction and opens for visitors to explore. This article serves as your guide to making the most of your tour of the site.

Fort Sumter, along with nearby Fort Moultrie , forms a designated National Historical Park of South Carolina. Fort Sumter was indelibly etched into American history when, on the 12th of April 1861, Confederate forces open fired on the US garrison.

The park is open year round but closes for Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day. The visitor center is open each day from 9 am to 5 pm.

In preparation for your visit and tour it is critical to check the boat schedule. Boats depart from two locations: Patriots Point (Mount Pleasant) and Liberty Square in downtown Charleston. Peak season runs from March 1 to November 30. During this time there are three daily departures from Liberty Square and two from Patriots Point.

From December 1 to February 28, there are two daily departures from Liberty Square and one from Patriots Point. The period from December 26 to December 31 reverts to the peak season timetable.

Liberty Square also hosts the Visitor Education Center - a free service and one that is critically important in learning about the fascinating history of the fort. Note that Fort Moultrie is also open from 9 am to 5 pm from Friday to Sunday.

Tours & Particpation

An iconic part of the daily ritual for park staff is the raising and lowering of the US flag. Visitors on the first ferry out to the site can assist rangers in raising the Stars and Stripes, while visitors on the final ferry out can assist in lowering and folding the flag.

Fort Moultrie

Fort Moultrie has lower visitation than Fort Sumter but still offers guided tours twice daily (11 am and 2 pm). However, it is open all year round for walking and exploring.

Current fees are $10 for adults and the site is free for children aged 15 and under. If you intend to visit in a group twice or more during a year, consider purchasing an annual pass for $35, which covers the card holder and up to three adults.

America the Beautiful Federal Lands Pass Holders enjoy free access, as do school tour groups. The latter require advance reservations and should reach out to the site staff at (843) 883-3123.

Fort Sumter

Strictly speaking, there is no entrance fee for Fort Sumter per se. However, the island is accessible only by ferry and private boats are not allowed.

To get the most out of your visit, we recommend booking an acclaimed tour aboard the Carolina Belle. You'll be engrossed in sightseeing and scenery suitable for the whole family, and local experts offer narrated insight into the history of the site.

Pets and alcoholic beverages are not permitted aboard the boat. Although every effort is made to make the tour accessible, ramps used for access are sometimes unavailable due to adverse weather conditions.

Visitors from outside the area should consider seeking accommodation in Charleston.

Fort Sumter Visitor Education Center

We recommend starting your day at the Fort Sumter Visitor Education Center at Liberty Square. This is where you will catch the ferry to Fort Sumter South Carolina. Admission to the fort and visitor center is free but you’ll need to buy ferry tickets to get out to the island.

The displays and information at the Education Center are very small but packed with history! The Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum outlines the history of slavery in the South, tensions between the states, and more information at historic Fort Sumter. A visit will take about 30 to 60 minutes depending on how much reading you do.

If you are visiting with kids, be sure to pick up a junior ranger packet at the Visitor Education Center.

What to Do While touring Fort Sumter

Once you get to the island, you will have 60 minutes for your tour of Fort Sumer. You are greeted by National Park rangers who give you an overview of the island’s history and attractions. This will leave you with about 45 minutes to explore the grounds, gift shop, and on-site museum.

Flag Raising at Fort Sumter National Park

If you are on the first ferry of the day, you can head to the top of the stairs for the flag-raising ceremony. We were lucky enough to get to participate in the ceremony and would highly recommend it. It is a great way to pay respect to the fallen heroes who served, especially those in the Civil War.

Take in the Views

On your way back to the ferry, walk out to the beach to admire the view of downtown Charleston. You will be able to see Patriots Point, USS Yorktown, the Battery, the Ravenel Bridge, and other area Charleston landmarks.

Original Artifacts Still on Site

There is still a lot of original items on the island. Make sure you see the Civil War era projectiles still lodged in the walls, the crooked arch, and leaning brick walls where a powder keg accidentally exploded.

There are also very large and ancient canons to look at throughout the grounds. You can ask one of the volunteers for a demonstration of how the canons worked.

There is also a tattered US flag that was smuggled out in secrecy just before the fort was captured by the Confederates.

Things to Know While touring Fort Sumter

Picnicking is not allowed at the fort, but we brought a refillable water bottle and some snacks without any issues. It is also a good idea to bring a hat, sunscreen and bug spray. There are several water fountains on Fort Sumter.

Your time at the fort will go faster than you think. Take your time and soak in the details but keep a good pace as you explore the island. A ranger will come by to tell you when the ferry is boarding. Keep in mind that if you are the last one on the ferry, you will get the last pick of seats.

Charleston Boat Tours

If the ferry tickets are sold out during your visit or you don’t mind just looking at Fort Sumter from the water, another fantastic option is a Charleston harbor tour . During this highly recommended tour, you will see Fort Sumter, USS Yorktown, the Battery, the Ravenel Bridge, and other Charleston landmarks.

You can choose if you’d like to depart in the morning, afternoon, or evening. The evening tours are a great opportunity to mix a little history in with a beautiful sunset harbor cruise. Sunsets are spectacular here.

About Fort Sumter

The Civil War began with an attack on Fort Sumter. The attack lasted two days from April 12-14, 1861. The only death during the attack was a union soldier who was accidentally killed during an explosion during the 100-gun salute. The Confederate army took over the fort because of nearly exhausted supplies and a shortage of troops. Union soldiers were allowed to retire the flag, fire a 100-gun salute and leave the fort.

How to Get to Fort Sumter

To reach Fort Sumter, the only option is to take a guided tour that includes a ferry ride . Situated on a small island in the beautiful Charleston Harbor, this historic site is accessible only by boat. Private boats are not permitted to dock at Fort Sumter.

Ferries going to Fort Sumter depart from both Liberty Square and Patriots Point.

To secure your spot on the ferry, book your tickets in advance. With Fort Sumter being a must-see attraction in Charleston, tickets often sell out quickly. You can conveniently purchase your tickets online ahead of time. This way, you’ll be able to get on your preferred tour time.

The ferry ride itself provides scenic views of Charleston Harbor. National Park Rangers are also present on the ferry, and you can ask any questions you may have along the way.

If you’re on the first or the last tour of the day, you can help the rangers hoist the large flag over the fort or take it down for the night.

How to get to Fort Sumter Via Liberty Square

One place to hop on the ferry to Fort Sumter is Liberty Square, the hub and official Fort Sumter Visitor Center. In downtown Charleston, Liberty Square offers a convenient departure point if you’re staying in the city.

After arriving at Liberty Square, take some time to explore the visitor center. Here, you’ll find quite a few informative displays that will teach you about the significance of Fort Sumter. They’ll help you gain a deeper understanding of what you’re about to see out on the island.

Once you have familiarized yourself with a brief overview of what happened at Fort Sumter, you’ll head downstairs to get in the ferry boarding line.

During the ferry ride, you’ll be able to take in great views of Charleston from the harbor.

Getting to Liberty Square

Getting to Liberty Square can be a bit of a challenge due to the narrow streets in Charleston.

However, there is a convenient parking option available for visitors. The best place to park is in the parking garage located just across the park, which services both Fort Sumter Tours and the Aquarium next door.

This parking garage offers a convenient and easy way to access Liberty Square and begin your journey to Fort Sumter. The last known rates for this parking garage are $1 per half hour.

Once you’ve parked your car, you can enjoy a nice little walk to the visitor center through Liberty Square.

Liberty Square is conveniently located a few blocks from hotels in downtown Charleston. If you’re staying in the city, you’ll want to get to Fort Sumter from Liberty Square.

How to get to Fort Sumter Via Patriots Point

Patriots Point is the second ferry departure location for a visit to Fort Sumter. It’s located just across the Cooper River. Patriots Point is home to the Naval and Maritime Museum, where you can see multiple retired Navy ships, including the USS Yorktown and USS Laffey.

If you’re looking for a day full of military history, you’ll want to plan to take your Fort Sumter tour from Patriots Point.

Parking is easier to find at Patriots Point. You can park your car in the large guest parking lot next to the museum. From there, you can make your way to the museum for your tour.

Patriots Point offers a more in-depth experience for history buffs and those interested in maritime history.

Getting to Patriots Point

Getting to Patriots Point is easier for those who are stressed out by tight city driving, with its convenient location on the Mount Pleasant side of Charleston Harbor.

To reach Patriots Point, you can easily drive there and park your car in the large parking lot beside the museum.

While walking to Patriots Point is not as easy as walking to Liberty Square, you’ll have better luck finding cheaper hotel prices on this side of Charleston Harbor. Many of the hotels are within 1-2 miles of Patriots Point.

Once you’ve parked your car, make your way to the museum where you’ll find the ferry boarding line. As you approach, you’ll be greeted by the majestic and iconic USS Yorktown aircraft carrier, which proudly sits as the centerpiece of Patriots Point.

Before or after your adventure to Fort Sumter, take some time to explore the exhibits at Patriots Point. Step aboard the USS Yorktown or the USS Laffey, both retired Navy ships that served in World War II.

Tips for the Ferry Ride to Fort Sumter

To help you enjoy the ferry ride to Fort Sumter, we have a few tips to ensure you have a pleasant time on the trip. Follow these suggestions to make the most of your experience:

1. Arrive early: To secure your spot on the ferry boat and guarantee a departure time that suits your schedule, plan to arrive at the ferry dock at least a half hour before your desired departure time. This will give you plenty of time to check in, purchase or present your pre-purchased tickets, and get settled before the boat sets sail. We’d recommend arriving even earlier to enjoy the displays before your tour.

2. Dress appropriately: The ferry ride to Fort Sumter can be quite breezy, especially if you choose to sit on the open deck and enjoy the views of Charleston Harbor. Be sure to dress in comfortable layers and don’t forget a light jacket or windbreaker, especially if you take an early morning tour. Learn from my mistake so you can enjoy the views! Also, wear comfortable shoes, as you’ll want to do some walking to see all of Fort Sumter.

3. Wear sunscreen and/or bring a hat: Since you’ll be spending plenty of time outside on the ferry deck and at Fort Sumter, you’ll want to protect yourself from the sun’s rays. Apply sunscreen before boarding the boat. A wide-brimmed hat will provide additional shade and keep you cool, especially during the hot summer months.

4. Bring snacks and water: While there is a small snack bar on the ferry, it’s always a good idea to have a few snacks of your own and a refillable water bottle. There are fountains at the visitor center to refill.

5. Enjoy the scenery: As you sail across Charleston Harbor, soak in the views of the city’s skyline and waterfront park. Keep your camera handy!

6.  Remember your motion sickness remedies:  Even though I love being on the water, I have a terrible time with motion sickness. Dramamine is my go-to and works well for me. Some swear by sea bands. Others have plenty of mints. Whatever works for you, come prepared.

7. Listen to the guides: During the ferry ride, the National Park Service provides informative commentary on the history and significance of the fort. You just might learn something new! I know we both learned a lot more about the Civil War during our visit.

8.  Keep Your Eyes Peeled for Dolphins!:  While there is no guarantee that you will see any during your boat ride, it is definitely a possibility while traveling through the harbor.

We hope you can use these tips to have a great time getting to Fort Sumter.

A view of the Charleston Harbor from the top of the Battery Huger includes the brick arches of the fort below with the ferry in the background and to the right.

What to See at Fort Sumter National Monument

Fort Sumter National Monument is a must-see attraction for any history buff or visitor to South Carolina. You can’t get much more historical significance! This fort played a pivotal role in the American Civil War, known as the spot where it all began.

While the experience is much different than the one you’d have at other forts, like Fort Jefferson at Dry Tortugas , there is lots to learn during the fairly short tour.

Here are some of the key sights to see while visiting Fort Sumter National Monument.

1. Visit the Exhibits: The visitor center on the mainland at Fort Sumter National Monument houses exhibits to tell the story of the fort and its significance in the Civil War. From artifacts and photographs to interactive displays, these exhibits will help you really appreciate what you’re about to see during your visit to the fort.

2. Explore the Fort: From the brick walls to the out-of-place looking large black Battery Huger structure, there is plenty to see during your hour at the fort. Walk in the footsteps of those Civil War soldiers. Imagine getting all those bricks out to the island to build that structure! Discover the various rooms and quarters as you get an idea of what daily life was like in the fort.

3. Enjoy the Scenic Views: You’ll get to enjoy beautiful views both as you approach and then again as you explore Fort Sumter. Make sure you head to the top of Battery Huger (remember, that big black thing?) where you can overlook all of Charleston Harbor. There are some info boards and displays up there along the edge of the fort and around the flag pole.

4. Learn from National Park Rangers: Fort Sumter National Monument is staffed by extremely knowledgeable National Park Rangers who are passionate about the history of the fort. Take advantage of their expertise by attending one of the brief ranger-led programs. After getting off the ferry, you can attend a brief introduction to the fort, which only lasts about 10 minutes. Then, you can be free to explore on your own with a deeper appreciation for what you’re seeing.

5. Discover the Historical Significance: Fort Sumter witnessed the first shots of the American Civil War. We’d say that’s pretty significant, right? This doesn’t really require any more explanation.

Battered brick walls of Fort Sumter show what is left after cannon balls were launched to begin the Civil War.

6. Browse the Gift Shop: Before leaving, be sure to stop in the museum gift shop either on the second floor of the Battery Huger at the fort or at the visitor center. Grab your national parks passport stamp or a souvenir to remember your trip.

A visit to Fort Sumter National Monument is a great way to experience a pivotal point in US history. By exploring the fort, taking in the exhibits, and enjoying the scenic views, you’ll have a deeper understanding of the historical significance of this iconic site.

Whether you’re a history buff or simply enjoy learning the highlights of America’s past, a trip to Fort Sumter is a worthwhile experience.

Why Visit Fort Sumter, Anyway?

Fort Sumter holds immense historical significance as the place where the American Civil War began.

You’ll be able to learn more about the beginning of the Civil War during a visit to Fort Sumter than just about anywhere else. It is where the first shots were fired, after all.

A cannon faces out over the Charleston Harbor.

Visiting Fort Sumter: Know Before You Go

Before you begin your journey to this fort in Charleston Harbor, there are a few things you should know to make the most of your visit.

After you visit Fort Sumter, continue north to Congaree National Park or south to Cumberland Island National Seashore and visit the wild horses . There is always another NPS site to visit.

How long is the tour of Fort Sumter?

The Fort Sumter tour is an experience that lasts just over 2 hours, allowing you to fully explore the historical significance of the fort at your own pace. Once you reach the island, you’ll have about 1 hour of time within the walls of the fort itself to explore.

You’ll spend about 1 hour and 15 minutes total on the ferry to and from Fort Sumter.

During the hour of exploration, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to dive deep into the rich history within Fort Sumter. From the barracks and cannons to the officers’ quarters and the American flag flying over the fort, each corner tells a story of the American Civil War.

If you’re eager to learn before you explore, take advantage of the ranger talk as soon as you get off the ferry at the fort. Then, you can ask any questions you have before exploring on your own.

While the ferry ride takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes, you’ll have time to enjoy the views of the fort and the surrounding Charleston Harbor. Points of interest are pointed out along the way.

How much does it cost to visit Fort Sumter?

To visit Fort Sumter, you’ll need to purchase a ferry ticket, which includes a tour of the fort. This is $35 per person . However, seniors, active military personnel, and children have reduced ticket prices.

It’s important to note that while America the Beautiful Passes are a great way to access many national parks and federal recreation sites, they are not accepted for ferry tickets to Fort Sumter.

So, when planning your visit, keep these ticket details in mind to make the most of your trip to this historically significant landmark.

Book your ferry and tour tickets early to get a tour time that best fits your schedule.

Fort sumter and boone hall plantation.

On this second day, check out two popular Charleston sites: Fort Sumter and Boone Hall Plantation . You can save some money by purchasing the combo ticket online that gives you admission for both in the same day.

Morning plan

After grabbing some breakfast, walk to Liberty Square where youll board the ferry to Fort Sumter . Its where the first shots of the Civil War are said to have been fired.

After a 30-minute ferry ride to the island, youll have about an hour to spend at the Fort, primarily exploring on your own.

The first ferry leaves at 9:30 a.m. and I think thats the best one to take so you can witness the flag raising presentation, which is the first thing done at the fort each day.

The ferry time back to the mainland brings the total tour time to two hours. Views of the harbor and city and beautiful bridge make the ferry rides to the fort and back well worth your time.

Afternoon plan

From Liberty Square, head to Boone Hall Plantation . Many TV series and movies were shot here, including one of my favorites, The Notebook.

Basic lunch options are available onsite, so Id recommend just eating at Boone Hall to maximum your afternoon. Youre going to want to spend several hours there.

As you arrive, youll go through the famous Avenue of the Oaks an absolutely gorgeous three-quarter mile drive lined with giant oak trees covered in Spanish-moss.

Then, youll want to tour the main house and gardens.

Tour from Patriots Point

Ranger RJ provided an interesting ranger talk highlighting one of the Privates in the war. After the 10-min tour, you were free to walk around on your own. There was a nice museum there as well. Great visit with so much history to learn and see. Definitely worth the time to visit. Book your ferry ticket in advance online. Unfortunately, while the site is no fee, there was a fairly high ticket price for the ferry out to the fort and it is NOT covered by a park pass.

Great experience. From the ferry ride to your time at the fort, everything is well done. You will enjoy this piece of history.

We did the tour while visiting Charleston for the day. It was informative and had several interesting history facts. The ferry ride over and back was nice but a full hour on the island is to long. There isn’t much to see. It was extremely hot the day we visited and there was really mo good place to escape the heat for very long.

We took the ferry out to the island and the information given on board in preparation for our visit was informative and useful. Once on the island we had an hour to wander around, explore and absorb all the information. Personally I became a bit bored towards the end. There are only so many cannons you can see before everything begins to merge into one. There is no doubt this is an important part of American history and even for us to see where the Civil War began was of historic note.
