How to Change the Travel in a Fox 36

As someone had pointed out, the Yeti SB150 that I presented to a few weeks ago, which I am using for product reviews, was fitted with a Fox 36 fork with “only” 160mm of travel. For this bike Yeti in fact suggests a 170mm fork, so that the so-called vertical travel matches the 150mm of rear travel. The subject was discussed with the engineers of the American brand during the launch of the Yeti SB165 .

fox 36 130mm travel

I reached out to Fox to ask about taking the 36 Grip2 from 160 to 170mm. Receiving a positive response, I was also told that I could do it myself, and that they would send me the necessary parts kit. ” It’s quite simple, just follow the instructions in the video you’ll find on our site .” And so, I took a look on Ridefox.com and I found everything , even which forks can be modified in their travel and how many volume spacers to insert to have the same feeling as when the fork had 160mm of travel.

The video is very well done and our workshop is equipped with every necessary tool so, after a brief bit of research, I got to work!

You start by removing the fork from the bike and removing all the air from the positive chamber. Then, clamp it in the stand in a horizontal position (so as not to spill the oil when you remove the lowers), then unscrew the rebound knob and the bolts that hold the lower leg assembly in place.

fox 36 130mm travel

It’s necessary to use a mallet to get the air spring and damper rods to unseat from the lower leg assembly, and there is a special fitting to make the removal easier, which we do not have. I therefore used a small socket bit whose edge is smaller than the threaded part you see below and I tapped with caution.

fox 36 130mm travel

Next, pour the oil from the lowers into a special container, and then pour it into a bottle that will eventually go to the landfill.

fox 36 130mm travel

The time has therefore come to dismantle the left side air spring assembly.

fox 36 130mm travel

To do this I first have to remove the valve cap at the fork crown and REMOVE ALL OF THE AIR from the positive spring. Then, using the appropriate socket, you can remove the valve cap assembly which the volume reducers attach to.

fox 36 130mm travel

Then I remove the locking ring at the bottom of the stanchion. A thin flat head screwdriver should do the trick.

fox 36 130mm travel

Now I can take out the piston that I’m going to replace.

fox 36 130mm travel

Here they are side by side below: the new 170mm one, not yet greased, and the old 160mm one. The difference between the two is only in length. Notice how the well lubricated and clean it is, despite 8 months of use.

fox 36 130mm travel

Now it’s time to put fresh oil in the lower leg assembly, starting with a small amount placed above the piston. It only needs 3cc. – t he oil, specifically is Fox’s 20WT Gold, which  is very dense.

fox 36 130mm travel

At this point, I closed the left top cap, removing the volume spacer. In fact Fox suggests starting out with the new 170mm travel without a spacer, as you can see in the table below. I put the air in the chamber: 70 psi, to start, then I’ll do the fine tuning when I put the fork on the bike.

fox 36 130mm travel

Time to reinstall the lower leg assembly. It’s an o peration that requires a bit of extra patience – to align stanchions with the dust wipers properly, and then push them up.

fox 36 130mm travel

Again with 20WT Gold oil insert 10cc in the air side (the one I just changed). Instead, on the right side, where the sealed cartridge is, put 40cc of the 5WT oil .

fox 36 130mm travel

Then tighten the bolts that hold the lowers with a torque wrench to their respective specs (5Nm on the right and 9Nm on the left).

fox 36 130mm travel

The end! All that remains is to reinstall the fork on the bike and then it’s ready to ride.

fox 36 130mm travel

In addition to increasing the travel of a 36, it can also be decreased . The operation that I’ve just shown becomes relevant if one decides to change out a frame of a bike, while keeping the components and the situation therefore requires a change in front travel.

The piston kit must be ordered directly from Fox via a dealer.

Fox Float 36 Factory GRIP2 fork

BikePerfect Verdict

Superlative suspension performance and usable adjustability right through the speed and size range, but the Kashima finish makes the Factory version comparatively expensive.

Superb overall spring balance

Plush and sensitive straight away

Consistently supportive

Wider range damping

Happily handles big hits

Performance Elite version is better value

Heavier than before

Bolt-on fender is small

Why trust BikePerfect Our cycling experts have decades of testing experience. We'll always share our unbiased opinions on bikes and gear. Find out more about how we test.

Fox introduced this, the latest 36, in the 2021 season and it rapidly established itself as the best mountain bike fork for aggressive mid-travel trail riding. A new air-spring and damping range finally caters for lighter or less aggressive riders but still delivers for proper pinners. While this superb fork is top of the range, the Factory version we're looking at here isn’t the most cost-effective model though.

For information on Bike Perfect's testing procedures and how our scoring system works, see our how we test page.

Fox Float 36 Factory fork fitted to a Pace MTB

Design and specifications

The latest Fox 36 is a major evolution from previous models inside and out. The most obvious changes structurally are the much bigger, rounded arch with more forward projection. This also gets threaded mounts for a dedicated fender which I’ve not tested but looks a bit small to make much difference in real mud. The back of the fork also features a raised rib that houses a bypass channel from the lowers up to a ‘Bleeder’ air valve on each leg. The crown has more overlap to combat steerer creak and the dropouts now have a floating adjuster to give perfect lower leg alignment. However, while the crown is 20g lighter, overall weight actually increases over the previous incarnation.

The arrival of the bigger Fox 38 model meant the stock travel options for 36 dropped to 160mm in 27.5in and 150 or 160mm travel in 29, but air-springs up to 170mm are available aftermarket. Offset options are 37 or 44mm in 27.5 and 44 or 51mm in 29. Our test fork was a 150mm travel, 44mm offset 29er but we’ve ridden Factory and Performance Elite 36s in other formats too.

Internally, the air-spring and damping have both been reworked too. The new EVOL air spring features a larger negative chamber. The VVC (Variable Valve Control) design with its cunning shim balance point altering, adjustable leaf spring, is now used in the compression damping circuit and not just the high-speed rebound. Low and high-speed compression damping are dialed in via metal wheels on top of the right-hand leg, while high and low-speed rebound damping is under a ‘dustbin’ cover on the right lower. The Factory version gets the iconic ‘Kashima’ gold anodized stanchions that tell everyone you’re riding the top dog Fox. There’s a full pro race ‘Fox orange’ painted lower option for the same price too, but only in 44mm offset and 160mm options.

Fox 36 GRIP2 damper

Performance

Previous generations of Fox have been notorious for stiff feeling forks with a damping range focused on larger and more aggressive riders. The new batch is far more welcoming to lighter, more subtle pilots. As a result, while at 70kg I historically had to wind compression damping completely off, the new 36 gives me at least the lighter end of the high and low-speed damper range to play with. They don’t need an obvious breaking-in period either, with the larger negative spring making them feel super plush off the top of the stroke.

The suggested fork settings are much more accurate than they have been in the past although the default rebound prompts are a bit slow if you’re not regularly doing large jumps. The VVC damping is more forgiving of less than perfect setup in general too and the whole Fox vibe is just a less intimidating and ‘judgy’ place to be.

It’s pretty much a parade of desirable suspension cliches. Buttery smooth off the top and super fast to respond to any jabs or punches from sudden hits at any point of the stroke. Under cornering and braking loads though it stays settled, supportive, and feedback-rich at whatever level your chosen low-speed compression adjustment naturally sits at. It feels super composed through serious slams too, accessing deeper travel progressively without ever wallowing or getting lost mid-stroke. That makes it better able to cope with the seismic appetite of high pivot bikes such as the Forbidden Druid , which I spent a lot of time on with the fork last summer. The only slight niggle is that low and high-speed compression aren’t entirely independent in terms of the overall effect, but you just need to be aware of that and compensate tune accordingly.

As sublime as the Float Factory 36 is, it’s worth noting that you get exactly the same changes and performance with the Fox Performance Elite version for $150/£100 less just without the golden Kashima stanchion coating. Given that I’ve never seen any tangible benefits from Kashima in terms of less friction or greater longevity  The FIT4 damper version with a three-position firm lever for extra climbing support is also cheaper at $1,079/£1179. The current RockShox Lyrik is both 100g lighter and more than a couple of hundred dollars/pounds less too.

Fox 36 Bleeder valve

Fox's Float Factory 36 is a fantastic fork and it really does set the gold standard for hardcore trail suspension. It’s supple, subtle, and far more welcoming and less tiring than previous generations for lighter riders, but it’ll match the best rear suspension bikes without worry.

The Performance Elite delivers the same performance for less money though and while the current RockShox Lyrik is lighter and cheaper but not quite as plush. We’ll be re-evaluating that comparison as soon as we can.

If These Shocks Could Talk…

Challenge Every Trail with the FOX 36 and FOX 34

Trail mountain biking is perhaps the largest category of MTB. Cross-country bikes have grown increasingly lightweight race-focused and all-mountain/Enduro bikes have themselves gravitated towards longer, slacker frame geometry with more suspension travel. In between these two extremes sits the rather large categories of Trail and All-Mountain. Trail bikes are for people who want the most versatile bike possible; reasonably efficient for climbing (where most riders spend most of their time) but capable enough for anything but the steepest and/or fastest descents. All-Mountain is just that; the stiffness and support when trails get steep and complex, but designed to offer desirable decent characteristics while keeping to climbable weight and efficiency.

fox 36 130mm travel

While FOX prides itself on serving the needs of racers in the cross-country, enduro and downhill disciplines, we also make some of the best trail and all-mountain suspension. In the range of the weight-conscious, efficiency-loving Downcountry to the well-rounded Trail rider, we make the 34. With a slightly narrower stanchion diameter compared to its bigger brother, 34 offers small-bump sensitivity and enhanced trail feedback. This makes it a great choice for riders who prioritize agility, precision, and responsiveness on the trail. For the well-rounded, all-mountain, occasional day-in-the-bike-park type of rider who wants confidence at speed or when hitting more complex features, we make the 36. The 36mm stanchions increase stiffness and improved handling under higher loads. This makes it an excellent choice for riders who prioritize stability, aggressive riding styles, and tackling technical descents with confidence.

FOX 34: The Trail Charger

Versatility, capability and light weight make the 34 the obvious choice for modern mid-weight and mid-travel bikes. Many of the chassis and internal design features from the Enduro race-oriented 38 trickle down to the 34, making this an exemplary performer in the Trail category. The 34 is available with 130mm or 140mm travel with a choice of dampers .

GRIP2 is our most advanced damper with 4-way adjustability of High/Low Speed Compression and High/Low Speed Rebound. If you want to get the most downhill performance out of your fork or like to tinker with settings, GRIP2 is the damper for you. The FIT4 offers almost the same plushness and small bump sensitivity as GRIP2 but features a 3-position switch for climbing. If you like to firm up your fork for climbing and enjoy an easier setup process, the FIT4 is the damper you want.

fox 36 130mm travel

Boosting Stiffness with the Lower Leg Arch

The arch may not seem like the biggest design detail, but it contributes significantly to the 34’s excellent stiffness-to-weight ratio. It also provides more clearance for the larger headtube profiles on modern trail bike frames when the fork bottoms out. The arch on the 34 can also accommodate up to a 2.6” tire making it even more capable on the wide variety of terrain covered by modern trail riding.

Adding Suppleness with Lower Leg Bypass Channels

When the fork compresses throughout its travel, the air pressure inside the fork will increase and consequently, make it more difficult to achieve full travel. Our lower leg bypass channels dramatically increase air volume within the lower legs to reduce this pressure ramping. The bypass channels have the additional benefit of recirculating oil into the upper parts of the lowers, continuously lubricating seals, foam rings and bushings and extending the life of those small parts.

fox 36 130mm travel

FOX 36: King of All-Mountain

The 36 is our tried and tested all-mountain fork seen on everything from trail riders—who live close to advanced/expert trail networks—all the way to riders on the Enduro World Cup circuit who prefer something lighter and more agile than the 38. The 36 is a step up from the 34 in stiffness and travel with a couple more features geared towards descending performance. It’s available with 150mm or 160mm travel and shares the same aforementioned choice of dampers (including the descent-oriented GRIP2), as well as its own lower leg arch and bypass channels optimized for the 36 chassis.

The 36: Maximizing Performance with Lower Leg Bleeders

Pressure buildup in the fork lowers can affect performance, preventing full travel from being achieved as well as diminishing small bump sensitivity and responsiveness. Bleeders allow you to vent excess pressure at the push of a button, ensuring your fork is functioning optimally before you drop in for that high-elevation descent.

fox 36 130mm travel

The 36: Kabolt-X Axle

This system increases the torsional stiffness of the fork via its sleeveless, single-sided pinch bolt design, while saving a few grams over the quick-release version of the floating axle. It also allows for perfect alignment, although alignment must be set each time the axle is removed.

FOX 34 vs 36: Which MTB suspension fork is right for you?

The decision on whether to run a 34 or 36 comes down to what type of rider you are. If you enjoy mountain biking on mixed terrain, like to cover distance as well as elevation and run a bike in the 120 to 130mm travel range, the 34 is everything you need and more. If you tend to pedal up to enjoy longer and steeper trails, if you own a bike in the 140-150mm range and if you don’t mind throwing your hat in the ring for the odd enduro race, the 36 offers that additional descent confidence.

Remember, both suspension forks are exceptional choices within their respective categories, and it’s important to consider your riding preferences and the trails you frequently encounter. Most importantly, your suspension is only as good as your effort to set it up properly. Take the time to get your set up right with bracketing . Repeating the same trail and fine-tune your suspension until it feels just right (especially if you’re running the GRIP2 damper) to get the most out of your suspension

Whichever fork you choose , both the FOX 34 and the FOX 36 will enhance your trail riding experience and help you conquer every trail.

Best Trail & All-Mountain Bikes (130-160 mm travel)

mountain biker with two bikes

Mid-travel full-suspension MTBs tend to cover a broader spectrum of mountain biking applications than other more specific MTB styles. With front and rear travel in the 130mm to 160mm range, these mountain bikes are usually classed as trail or all-mountain bikes.

These bikes are able to handle relatively mountainous conditions like rocky trails and singletracks but are less agile on descents than dedicated downhill MTBs. The suspension is usually just tight enough that it can still swallow up obstacles and vibration without losing too much speed and momentum while having a comfortable geometry to climb as well.

Buying Guide

ibis ripley mountain bikes

Ibis Ripmo – Big Wheel, Big Travel Speed Demon. What’s great about this bike is that Ibis Cycles manufacturers their own set of 29″ carbon wheels that can accomodate tires up to 2.8″ in width. “

What to Expect & How to Choose?

Trail bikes have quickly become the most common form of full-suspension MTBs, designed to tackle all forms of terrain while maintaining comfort over a long distance. Trail bikes fall between XC and Enduro bikes, offering sufficient downhill handling while retaining speed over flatter sections.

They usually have a seat tube angle in the 74-75 degree range, with shorter chainstays and longer reach. Travel ranges from as little as 120mm all the way up to 160mm, with both 29″ and 27.5″ wheel sizes popular.

You should consider your style of riding before selecting a mid-travel MTB. While they all have similar characteristics, the type of riding you intend on doing will define how much travel is ideal.

Suspension Travel

If you enjoy charging downhill or attempting small jumps, you’ll want to choose something in the higher travel range . If you prefer racing along bumpy off-road or gravel tracks at high speed, aim for something in the lower travel range .

Wheels & Tires

Other points to consider include wheel and tire size. Larger 29″ wheels are better for speed and absorption, whereas the small 27.5″ wheel size is more agile on downhills and sharp corners. 2.5″ width is somewhat average, while 2.8″ is considered as wide.

Different MTB Disciplines

Xc vs. trail.

Cross-country (XC) is generally considered the most traditional mountain bike style with the most versatile usage. Hence the name, Cross-Country Mountain Bikes can handle all types of terrain from smooth singletrack and gravel roads to rocky trails and technical mountain tracks.

XC mountain bikes typically have a shorter wheelbase for agility and steeper geometry for easier hill climbing. Head angles are in the range of 69-71 degrees, with seat tube angles between 74-75 degrees. They usually have the lowest amount of travel, from 90-100mm , and 29″ wheels for a faster, stiffer ride.

Trail/All-Mountain vs. Enduro

Enduro bikes attempt to combine aggressive downhill geometry with uphill climbing ability, resulting in a bike that can tackle highly technical courses over varied terrain.

They typically have the longest, lowest, and slackest geometry of all MTB styles, making them less comfortable over long distances, but also more versatile. They are both stable on downhills and powerful on ascents, with suspension in the 150-180mm range and tires from 2.3″ to 2.8″ thick.

27.5″ vs. 29″ – The Endless Debate

Mountain bike wheel sizes have become a hot topic recently, after years of 26″ wheels dominating the market. Since the 29″ wheels began gaining popularity in the mid-2010s, manufacturers began experimenting with different wheel sizes, introducing the mid-sized 27.5″ or also known as the 650b wheel size. Nowadays, almost all MTBs use either 29″ or 27.5″, with subtle but noticeable differences between the two. You’ll still find 26″ wheels on smaller frame sizes on some models.

  • Being larger, 29″ wheels are better for taller riders and while they offer less acceleration, they have better traction and attack angle which eventually means better speed .
  • 27.5″ wheels are faster and lighter , with better maneuverability and greater versatility .

27.5″ MTB wheels are also known to have the availability to fit wider tires of up to 3″ in width, while the standard max clearance for 29″ tires is 2.6″

Which are the best mountain bike brand on this list?

Ibis, Yeti, Santa Cruz, Revel, Transition, and Evil are some of the boutique-type brands in the MTB business, while Salsa has the most models available. Cannondale has also done a great job providing online shoppers with a variety of mountain bikes from their fleet.

What is the best all-mountain bike?

The different types of mountain bikes might confuse most riders, but it isn’t actually as confusing. An all-mountain bike is basically built 70% for ascending and 30% descending, making it a few notches harder to ride than the regular trail bike.

Do you need the rear suspension lock-up switch?

Climbing is a part of mountain biking, and if you tend to be the climber who climbs while seated, a rear suspension-lock-up switch might be useful for you. The switch works wonders on longer-travel bikes with slacker geometry, while you’ll generally see the switches on higher-end models.

The Spot Mayhem 130 Raises the Bar for Mid-Travel Trail Bikes

This 130/140mm 29er is super capable and wildly entertaining.

The Takeaway: The Mayhem 130 is a mid-travel trail 29er with the quickness of a bike with shorter travel.

  • All the downhill speed and capability you’d expect from a 130/150mm 29er, but uniquely sharp and quick everywhere else.
  • Spot’s Living Link dual-link suspension design with a titanium flex plate in place of a bearing-and-axle pivot.
  • Inline shock saves weight compared to a piggyback shock.

Price: $7,999 as tested (6-Star XTR build) Weight: 28.8 lb. (medium)

Spot sent me the only bike ahead of the launch, back in early May, giving me lots of time to ride and see how it stacks up.

Nested Hose

The rear brake hose nestles into a groove in the downtube.

Meet The Mayhem 130

The new Mayhem 130 is a mid-travel trail bike with 130mm of rear travel and a 140mm Fox 36 on the front. Complete bikes come with 29-inch wheels, but it’s designed to fit 27.5+ tires as well.

The frame is low-slung with, as I like to call it, squarganic tube shaping and a stout downtube that measures approximately 70 by 40mm. The dual-link rear suspension employs Spot’s Living Link design (more below), with a titanium leaf spring. This replaces the composite leaf spring used in previous models (all Living Link bikes will eventually switch to the titanium leaf spring), as Spot found it offered superior spring and packaging properties.

There’s room inside the front triangle for a water bottle, with another bottle under the downtube (I used it for a Wolf Tooth B-Rad accessory mount ). The Derailleur and dropper post housing run internally in rattle-free tunnels, while the rear brake hose runs externally, nestling into a groove in the downtube and well secured around the BB. The seat tube is short and straight, so it is friendly to longer droppers. There’s a threaded BB shell, ISCG ’05 mounts, and SRAM’s universal rear derailleur mount, too.

spot mayhem 130

Geometry is adjustable via a flip chip in the rear shock mount. This one is a little more elegant than most, as you don’t need to remove any parts to change the geo. Just loosen the rear shock mounting bolt enough to twist the black wing nut 180 degrees. This changes the head and seat angles 0.5 degrees, and raises and lowers the BB eight millimeters.

One perhaps unexpected detail on a mid-travel trail bike is the choice to run an inline instead of a piggyback shock. Spot’s CEO Andrew Lumpkin explains that because the Mayhem 130 runs a lower leverage ratio—2.26:1 averaged—the shock isn’t worked as hard. “Less demand on the spring/damper system means that it can be lighter and less sophisticated without compromising performance,” he said.

spot mayhem 130

There are other benefits to the inline shock. In Fox’s shock line, as you step up from the Float inline to the DPX2, then to the X2, the shocks get heavier and heavier duty. But they also get more planted and less poppy. The inline shock gives the Mayhem 130 a livelier feel than it would have with a piggyback.

True, the inline shock can’t absorb as much heat as a piggyback, and might not offer as much control in really demanding situations, but the 130 isn’t for the bike park. And as you’ll see in my ride impressions, the inline shock compliments the Mayhem 130 well. And if the inline isn’t enough for your needs, you can always swap it out for a piggyback.

Ride Review

cross rut ride shot

I was lucky enough to get on the Mayhem 130 in early May, providing me lots of time to ride in on all my favorite trails and back to back with a number of other trail bikes. I fell in love with it instantly, and that love only got deeper as I rode it more and stronger as I rode other bikes. For what it’s worth, this is my favorite mountain bike right now, and the one bike I’d keep if I had to get rid of the others.

So many modern trail bikes plow through terrain with unflappable stability. It works, and there’s no denying their speed and capability. But unless I’m fully pinned in challenging terrain, I find many of them dead-ish and kind of boring. I think this is part of the reason why we’re seeing gravity-oriented companies finding religion in shorter-travel bikes. Done right, a shorter-travel bike is quicker, lighter, and livelier than a bigger bike, but still capable of running wild on the downhills. But what if they took a more balanced approach to mid-travel trail bike? What if a mid-travel bike wasn’t made to ride like a big bike? There's no longer a need to ask: that’s what Spot did.

The Mayhem 130 is a modern trail bike with all the downhill speed and capability on technical terrain you would expect from a bike like it, yet it completely avoids feeling like it’s built just to take the straightest line. And it doesn’t need pro speed to come alive and turn.

spot mayhem 130

This Mayhem 130 climbs like a shorter-travel bike and descends like a modern 130/140mm bike. It’s bright and zippy on flatter, tighter, trails. It is every bit as fast and capable going downhill or in challenging terrain as any other bike in its class, but I find it much more dynamic and entertaining to ride. It’ll plow if you want to plow, but you’re not fighting its nature if you dance and juke your way down a trail. It has the travel and geometry for a wide range of terrain and almost never feels like you’re riding too much—or too little—bike. It pedals great too, feeling firm at your feet and pulsing forward energetically.

The suspension is butter: extremely sensitive off the top, well supported in the middle, enough ramp at the end to let me use full travel without ever bottoming out, and just smooth, smooth, smooth. The traction is superb, too.

The handling is fun. It’s as stable and predictable as I’d expect a bike with a mid-65-degree head tube angle, but it never has the slow soggies either. I got all crossed up at about 30 mph (see the image higher up) and corrected my line without drama, yet I found it snappy and quick around slower and tighter corners as well.

spot mayhem 130

The riding position is centered for comfortable descending, and the seated climbing position is just long enough. The seat tube angle is a little relaxed compared to current trends, however the Mayhem sits up well in its travel so I never felt pushed into the back seat, even on steep climbs. And though the cockpit length is a touch on the short side overall, it seems to compliment the bike’s lively character.

The Mayhem 130 is a delight. A joy. A refreshing breeze on a warm day. Just all good things. One of those bikes I ride that makes me say, “Why aren’t there more like this?”

spot mayhem 130 geometry overview

The Mayhem 130’s geometry is interesting. Some numbers look average, others are progressive, and others less aggressive.

The 65.2/65.7 (low/high) head tube angle—with a 44mm offset fork—is to the slacker end for the category, and the BB is on the lower side. Reach, top-tube lengths, and the wheelbase are a bit to the short side, and the seat tube angle is less steep than some. No brand satisfies every rider with its geometry, and some riders will of course find something to complain about.

I get it. I do see some things on paper that furrow my brow—the reach and top tube look short-ish to me. But then I go ride the bike and it feels so balanced and dialed and works so well. Things come together in a really special way on this bike, so I can’t imagine changing a thing.

The Lively Living Link

Like Spot’s other full-suspension bikes, the Mayhem 130 uses the brand’s Living Link suspension design. It’s a dual-link system that looks a lot like a DW-Link at first glance, but there’s a key difference. Instead of an axle and bearing, the lower link’s rear “pivot” is a titanium plate.

This not only eliminates any maintenance concerns, it alters the bike’s character. The plate is a leaf spring that “adds and subtracts force at the rear axle as the suspension moves through its stroke,” says Lumpkin. He adds, “The strongest force contribution is somewhere around 25 percent of the travel, and the largest force deduction is somewhere around 75 percent of the travel. This serves to reduce the spring/wheel rate in the middle half of the travel, while effectively increasing the spring rate in the first quarter and last quarter.” Cue the pretty graphic.

spot living link force at the rear axle

Lumpkin also claims the leaf spring has benefits on the rebound side. It improves big-hit recovery and traction near top out because the Living Link, he says, “effectively makes the rebound relatively slower at 75 percent travel, then relatively faster at 25 percent travel.”

If I read Spot’s claims about their Living Link without riding the bikes, my eyes would roll so fast and hard I’d backflip. But this the fifth Living Link bike I’ve ridden, and there is something unique, delightful, and frankly great about the way it works. There’s uncommon pop, liveliness, and efficiency to them, yet they’re every bit as planted, controlled, and capable as the best of their competition.

Dream Build

spot mayhem 130

Spot offers the Mayhem 130 in four builds. They start with the 4-Star build at $4,999 and go up to the 6-Star SRAM AXS build at $8,399. The frame by itself runs $3,199.

My review bike is the 6-Star with Shimano XTR. It’s a dream build: Fox Factory suspension; a full Shimano XTR group, including crank and four - piston brakes; Enve 6/30 carbon rims with Industry Nine’s Hydra hubs (with delicious 0.52-degree engagement); Race Face carbon bar and Turbine stem; Maxxis’s stalwart Minion DHF/DHR tires; Bike Yoke’s superb Revive dropper post, and a classic WTB saddle with titanium rails. Spot equips this bike with Shimano’s excellent SL-MT800 dropper post remote with the clean I-Spec EV integrated mount. The only things I didn’t love were the stick-on Vans grips—I chucked them for a set of Ergon GD-1 lock-ons.

This build comes in at $7,999. That’s high end, but competitive for a boutique brand. It’s the same price as Trek’s Fuel EX 9.9 XTR and cheaper than a Specialized S-Works Stumpjumper 29 ($9,520), a Pivot 429 Trail Team XTR ($8,399), and a similarly equipped Guerrilla Gravity The Smash ($7,450).

Maybe Heavy, Maybe Not

I usually wait until the last minute to weigh my test bikes. I want to form my ride impressions without knowledge of the weight influencing them. And while I knew the Mayhem 130 wasn’t a featherweight, it felt lighter than any trail bike I’ve been on in a bit. So I was genuinely surprised to see almost 29 pounds (I weigh the bikes without pedals) when I hung it on the scale. And that’s with a top-of-the-line (XTR, carbon rims) build with the inline shock. There are few places to cut any weight without significantly altering the Mayhem 130’s character.

spot mayhem 130

I’ve been riding mountain bikes a long time. I can recall when high-end full-suspension trail bikes were 25-ish pounds. So my initial reaction to seeing a 29-pound weight is still, “Damn, that’s heavy.” But then I remember that those 25-pound bikes had 26-inch wheels, no dropper post, and quick-release wheels. And how sketchy and unreliable those bikes were.

Like I mentioned, I’ve been on the Mayhem 130 since early May. Other than chain lube and refreshing the sealant, I haven’t done a thing to it. It’s been rock solid, reliable, and I haven’t wanted or needed to change anything (well, other than the grips). Mountain bikes are heavier than they were, but we’re riding far more capable and reliable equipment. Today’s mountain bikes aren’t heavy: yesterday’s mountain bikes were too light.

Fox 36 120mm?

  • Add to quote

I know it doesn't exist but what would it take to make a Fox 36 Performance or Z1 Bomber 140mm to 120mm? Or would it be better/easier to convert it to 130mm? Any input would be appreciated.

fox 36 130mm travel

It would be easier to convert it to a different fork.

Not sure about the newer air pistons, but in the past it was easy to reduce travel with spacers under the air piston. People used to run the 36 160mm down to 100mm range for Dj, or short travel bikes.

fox 36 130mm travel

A buddy of mine, removed the piston from his air shaft by knocking out the pin, cut the shaft down then redrilled a hole for the pin.

fox 36 130mm travel

You can convert the 36 down to 130mm

Really? How does one do that? Can it be converted to 120mm something in-between?

You can buy a different airshaft, 130 is the lowest they have.

So they make a 130mm 36 but you can only get it via the aftermarket or am I inferring it wrongly?

Vorsprung Luftkappe

fox 36 130mm travel

Make a good fork a great fork.

Introducing the Luftkappe air piston kit for Fox Float forks. The Luftkappe is available for: 34 Float NA2 (2016-17) Performance & Factory Series (130mm + only - 120mm and lower need the 2018 Evol air shaft before a Luftkappe can be fitted) 34 Float NA2 Evol (2018+) Performance & Factory Series 36 Float NA2 Evol (2018+) Performance & Factory Series 36 Float NA (2015-17) Performance & Factory Series (max 180mm travel, min 120mm travel)

Installation tools also available See bottom of page for full compatibility & incompatibility details.

Pinkbike: "The Luftkappe's change to the feel of the Lyrik was immediately noticeable on the trail. Traction was increased across chatter and the fork remained higher in its travel and more stable, improving the dynamic ride height without sacrificing the top end. My confidence soared when hitting sections with a lot of chatter and mid to large-sized hits, and the result meant more comfort and speed through such sections."

Taking everything we learned with the Corset air sleeves and the Luftkappe we developed for the Pike, Yari & Lyrik, this second generation Luftkappe is a new air piston assembly for Fox's 34 NA2/Evol and 36 Evol forks. User installable and simple to set up, the Luftkappe transforms a good fork into a great fork.

  • Softer initial stroke
  • Larger negative air chamber
  • Increased sag without the associated diving
  • Coil-like initial & mid-stroke spring rate without excessive bottoming
  • Increased sensitivity
  • Improved mid stroke support & control
  • Superior bump compliance and traction
  • Reduced hand fatigue
  • Reduces required compression damping
  • Retains volume spacer compatibility
  • Optional tools available for self-install

"I just wanted to follow up and let you know the Luftkappe and Fractive tune on the fork are incredible. I have 3 rides on it now and have the settings almost all dialed. Things I’m noticing so far:

  • The fork smooths out the small chatter making it much easier on my hands and wrists
  • large hits are very controlled and it has a much more bottomless feel
  • the control it gives me going through chunky corners is scary good. I’ve always liked the feel of the rear suspension on the bike, but it can’t keep up to the fork now in these situations.

I’m a very happy customer! Thanks for the awesome service." Steven Wiebe

Grip2 damper Upgrade

fox 36 130mm travel

The Fox Grip2 damper is the benchmark for unparalleled ride quality and ultra-precise adjustability. GRIP2 includes our patented Variable Valve Control (VVC) technology which allows for external fine-tuning of suspension performance. GRIP2 achieves with the twist of a knob what typically requires the time consuming and complicated task of completely disassembling and reassembling the fork.

The damper unit provides the following adjustments:

  • High-speed compression (w/VVC)     8 clicks
  • Low-speed compression   16 clicks
  • High-speed rebound (w/VVC)   8 clicks
  • Low-speed rebound   16 clicks

Vorsprung Secus

Vorsprung created an air spring with a truly better spring rate, everywhere in the travel, than a coil. The Secus upgrade delivers the first and only air spring system to really come indistinguishably close to the linear spring rate of a coil fork for the entire first 2/3rds of its travel, with the advantage of a gentle end stroke progression to prevent bottoming without the “wall of force” harshness that excessively progressive springs create.

Secus Advantages:

  • An enlarged negative air spring chamber delivers a soft, supple initial stroke for ultimate small bump compliance (yes, even compared to the Luftkappe)
  • Proprietary Midstroke Support Valve improves predictability and support beyond the sag point
  • Reduced lower leg pneumatic ramp means better scalability of the air spring, particularly for light riders who previously struggled to use full travel
  • Plush and predictable like a coil, bottomless like an air spring
  • Allows full use of travel in both directions - fully extends to topout without any quibbles (including on Debonair B1 air springs) and fully compresses without excessive ramp
  • Allows more lower leg bath oil to be used for superior lubrication
  • Considerably lighter than coil conversions - adds approximately 130g
  • Simple setup - inflate fork, bounce on it a few times, press MSV charge button, go ride
  • Compatible with OEM volume spacers for end-stroke progression adjustment
  • Compatible with other aftermarket top-cap systems such as DSD Runt and MRP Ramp Control
  • Lower compression ratios mean a more consistent spring rate
  • Transferrable between any Secus-compatible forks with only a footstud to change at most.

Three Stages of Control

By independently optimising the beginning, middle and end portions of the stroke, the Secus gives you the linear-to-progressive spring rate that coil springs and traditional air springs alike wish they had.

Initial stroke - enlarged negative air spring chamber delivers a soft, supple initial stroke for ultimate small bump compliance.

End stroke - enlarged lower leg volume reduces overall progression even at higher pressures and allows for a wider range of end-stroke ramp options to be utilised with standard fork volume spacers.

Who it is for

  • Riders who want improved support, compliance, grip and control from their Fit4-damped fork, without harshness or the blowing-through feel
  • Riders who prioritise HSC adjustment and usable compression damping over lockouts and platform systems
  • Riders serious about performance
  • Large hits are very controlled and it has a much more bottomless feel
  • The control it gives me going through chunky corners is scary good. I’ve always liked the feel of the rear suspension on the bike, but it can’t keep up to the fork now in these situations.

Fractive Compatible Forks:

  • 32 Factory Series Fit4 forks, from 2016-18
  • 34 Factory Series Fit4 forks, from 2016-18
  • 36 Factory Series Fit4 forks, from 2016-18
  • 40 Performance Series Elite forks, from 2016-18 Any spring system in any of the above forks (Talas, Float or the 40 VAN) works fine as the spring system is in the left leg, this part is going in the right leg.

Pricing: Starting at $150 - Buy Now

Incompatible Forks

  • Any remote-lockout or remote-adjust forks. These are not compatible.
  • Any StepCast forks (32 or 34)
  • 32, 34 or 36 Performance Series (P-S) forks with only the 3-position adjuster (no black low speed compression dial).
  • Any Fit Grip forks
  • Any RC2-damped forks (36 or 40) with high and low speed compression dials
  • Any Rhythm forks

The No-BS Limitations

  • If you want a lockout or a "pedal mode", this is not for you. The mode selector now becomes a high speed compression (HSC) adjuster and does NOT make a perceptible difference at low speed (ie bouncing on the fork) as its effect is very much separated from the LSC adjuster. It does however make a substantial difference at high speeds. If that would bother you, keep your stock damper.
  • Self-install on these is not simple. Please read the installation manual before ordering a kit for self-install and ensure you are capable and comfortable carrying this out.
  • We do not sell tools for self-install of these parts at this time - Fox does however.
  • This kit cannot address air spring concerns. Our Luftkappe upgrades however can help with that.
  • Our valving recommendations are based on our testing, and are aimed at centering you in the adjustment range. The range of adjustment is quite wide, and you will still need to spend some time finding the setup you like best.
  • This will not turn your 100mm travel XC race bike into a 200mm DH bike. Sorry.

Custom damper Tuning

Custom Tuning depending on what the customer is wanting. we can increase or decrease the high speed compression or high speed rebound circuit to suit the customer needs.

  • Anti dive control

Air Volume Spacers

fox 36 130mm travel

Changing volume spacers in the shock is an internal adjustment that allows you to change the amount of mid stroke and bottom out resistance.

  • If you have set your sag correctly and are using full travel (bottoming out) too easily, then you could install a larger spacer to increase bottom out resistance.
  • If you have set your sag correctly and are not using full travel, then you could install a smaller spacer to decrease bottom out resistance.
