What to See and Do at Geneva-on-the-Lake, Ohio

Geneva-on-the-Lake , located on the shores of Lake Erie about an hour's drive east of Cleveland, was one of Ohio's first lakeside resorts. Today, the popular resort community boasts antique stores, a variety of restaurants , a cool water slide and a host of wineries, just to name a few attractions.

Visit Lake Erie Wineries

The Grand River Valley, which extends from Madison to Conneaut, includes more than 20 wineries. Two of these—the Lakehouse Inn and Winery and Firehouse Winery—are located right in Geneva-on-the-Lake. Others are just a short drive away in Geneva, Madison, and Harpersfield.

Savor the Varied Restaurants

Nobody needs to go hungry at Geneva-on-the-Lake. The village boasts a varied assortment of eateries. Choose from Eddie's, a 1950s-style restaurant, or Mary's home cooking, or the spectacular lake views at the Lake House Inn and Winery and the Lakefront Restaurant... just to name a few.

Hit the Beach

Lake Erie is an integral part of any trip to Geneva-on-the-Lake. The 300-foot sandy expanse at Geneva State Park is family-friendly and scenic. Lifeguards are on duty during the summer. Other park facilities include a marina, a lodge, hiking and biking trails, picnic tables, and camping facilities.

There are also a number of small, private cove beaches all along the lake side of the "Strip."

Be a Kid Again at the Adventure Zone

Adventure Zone, located at the curve on the west end of the "Strip," features all kinds of family fun. Open daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day, they offer Go Carts, miniature golf, bumper boats, a classic 1957-circa merry-go-round, a rock-climbing wall, batting cages, a children's play area, and more.

Browse Through the Many Antique Stores

One of the most enjoyable things to do (aside from hanging out at the beach) in Geneva-on-the-Lake is to explore the village's collection of eclectic antique stores. You'll find everything from furniture to glassware to Geneva-on-the-Lake memorabilia.

Explore the Jennie Munger Gregory Memorial Museum

Located on the west end of the "Strip," the Jennie Munger Gregory Museum, a part of the Ashtabula County Historical Society, is housed in an 1823-circa Victorian farmhouse, the oldest frame structure on the "Strip." Each room of the museum tells a different story about Ashtabula County history, including displays about Platt Spencer, the Underground Railroad in northeast Ohio, and the early history of Geneva-on-the-Lake. The museum is open year-round. Hours vary by season.

Play Miniature Golf

Geneva-on-the-Lake is also home to the oldest mini golf course in the United States. Opened in 1924, Allison's Mini Golf is fun for the entire family. Located in the heart of the GOTL Strip, Allison's is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

How To Spend The Perfect 3 Days In Geneva-On-The-Lake

This year, I have really been craving time on the lake. When I had the opportunity to partner with Ohio. Find It Here. on another road trip post, I knew that I needed to visit somewhere on Lake Erie. Luckily, Geneva-On-The-Lake, Ohio is one of the destinations on the Charming Towns Road Trip by Ohio. Find It Here. and it made for a great Ohio staycation for us! I will be sharing how to spend the perfect 3 days in Geneva-On-The-Lake including where to stay, what to do, see, and eat while you’re there! Thanks to Ohio. Find It Here. for sponsoring this post. 

One thing that I love about living in Ohio is being close to Lake Erie. I definitely took living in such proximity to one of the beautiful Great Lakes for granted growing up. Now that I am an adult, I think it would be really difficult for me to live anywhere that isn’t close to the beach – whether that be a lake or ocean. It is a part of me now and I just can’t stay away!

A Perfect 3 Days In Geneva-On-The-Lake

We recently had to cancel a family reunion trip that we were supposed to split our time between Anna Maria Island and Sanibel Island, Florida and I was so missing my beach time! I’m so glad that we chose to visit Geneva-On-The-Lake. It definitely gave me the beach fix that I was looking for!

Even though Geneva-On-The-Lake is not super far from home, it felt like we had gone away on a real vacation. We had the most wonderful time spending 3 days in Geneva-On-The-Lake! I want to share our itinerary with you in hopes that you might be able to get away too!

Things To Know Before Spending 3 Days In Geneva-On-The-Lake

How To Get Around

Getting around Geneva-On-The-Lake is very easy because of how walkable the town is. You can also rent bikes or a golf cart to help you get from point A to point B. It’s easy enough to drive as well or you may want to sign up for a winery bus tour if you plan to visit a few of the wineries. We really love Sunset Taxi because they have so many different vehicle options that it makes things easy no matter how many people you have in your group.

Where To Stay During Your 3 Days In Geneva-On-The-Lake

When thinking about where to stay during your 3 days in Geneva-on-the-Lake, there are plenty of options for every group size and budget. My recommendations for accommodations in Geneva-on-the-Lake are

• High End – The Lodge at Geneva-On-The-Lake Cottages
• Mid-Range – The Lakehouse Inn
• Budget – Camping at Geneva State Park Campground

What To Wear in Geneva-On-The-Lake

Geneva-On-The-Lake is pretty casual for the most part, but we like to dress a bit nicer. You can definitely get away with shorts and a t-shirt though if that is more your syle! I packed a nice, flowy dress for the winery day, white jeans, a sweater, jean shorts, and a few nice tops.

Helpful Tips For Your 3 Days In Geneva-On-The-Lake

Geneva-On-The-Lake is famous for The Strip with its many historic and charming local businesses and restaurants. Most of them are only open on Saturday and Sunday and during peak travel season so keep that in mind while planning your trip and always check the hours before you go.

If you want to visit the more popular wineries, like M Cellars, Debonne or Laurentia, go early! That way, you can beat the rush and enjoy your time with fewer people.

To make things easier and safer, book a winery tour through Sunset Taxi. You can choose your own itinerary or let them suggest a good plan for you.

Things To Do During Your 3 Days In Geneva-On-The-Lake

This 3 day itinerary is what we did on our trip to Geneva-on-the-Lake. We had an amazing time and I hope it will give you inspiration to go off of or you can follow it completely for a lovely trip!

Day 1: The Lodge at Geneva-On-The-Lake and Geneva State Park

When you arrive, check-in and get settled into your hotel! We chose to stay in a Cottage at The Lodge at Geneva-On-The-Lake. I liked that they were all individual cottages so we would have our own space. Like I said before, I really wanted to stay right on Lake Erie and our cottage was about as close as you can get to the water! I also loved that it has a nice front porch for epic sunset and sunrise watching.

Once you unpack, take a walk around and explore! I like to get my bearings when visiting a new place, so we walked the hotel property, along Lake Erie, and into Geneva State Park. There’s an entrance to the park just to the left of the lodge.

After exploring, we went to dinner at Horizon’s restaurant at the lodge. We sat on the patio and enjoyed the idyllic Lake Erie views. My husband and I both ordered the Fish and Chips and enjoyed some local wine and beer.

Once we had stuffed ourselves with our dinners, we decided to watch the sunset from our cottage porch. I will never get sick of sunsets and dreamy cotton candy skies! We called it a night early and opted to enjoy the cozy cottage for a movie night.

Day 2: The Strip and Geneva-On-The-Lake Wineries

After going to bed early, we woke up feeling refreshed and excited for our first full day in Geneva-On-The-Lake. We had brought some breakfast food to make in our kitchenette and drank our coffee on the porch while admiring the views. There’s something so peaceful about drinking coffee outside in such a beautiful setting. Yet another reason why I need to live near the water someday! (Since writing this blog post, I did move and now live a 5 minute walk from Lake Erie – dreams do come true, ha!) Horizons Restaurant also offers breakfast at the hotel if you would rather enjoy a nice continental breakfast. 

Once we got ready, we walked over to the lodge to pick up our golf cart for the day. The Lodge at Geneva-On-The-Lake was nice enough to give us a complimentary rental for the day – thank you! I highly recommend renting one because we had so much fun driving it around and it was super convenient and easy to park on The Strip.

We drove it over to The Strip and ended up having lunch on the patio of Ruff Life On The Lake. It is a cafe and dog boutique, and doggy daycare! We don’t have a dog but it was still a cute place to eat, and if you do have one its obviously very pet friendly…they even have a doggy menu!

Next, we decided to grab a coffee from The Corner Coffeehouse to-go before visiting the Old Firehouse Winery. I chose to try their dry and specialty wine tasting and we ordered some fries too. They were delicious! It was nice to sit on the patio and just hang out for a while. 

It started to rain as we were wrapping up at the Old Firehouse Winery, so we decided it would be the perfect time to go back to our cottage and relax for a while before dinner.

Luckily, the rain stopped and we had a beautiful evening on the patio at The Lakehouse Inn Winery. You can eat inside at Crosswinds Grille with a full menu but we did not make reservations ahead of time. Instead, we ordered a pizza and drinks from the outdoor bar to eat on the patio which was also great. The Lakehouse Inn has some stunning views of Lake Erie and we had the best time hanging out there for the evening.

Next, we went back to our cottage for *you guessed it* yet another gorgeous sunset! It was one of those incredible sunsets where everyone was outside admiring the view and friends all over Northeast Ohio were sharing their amazing sunset shots online. It was one of those memories you won’t quickly forget.

Day 3: Visit The Grand River Valley Wineries

On the final day of our 3 days in Geneva-On-The-Lake, we visited the pool at The Lodge before getting ready for the day. There are outdoor and indoor pools so take your pick! By the time we were ready, it was almost lunchtime. We planned to visit a few Geneva wineries and decided to go to Laurentia Winery first. You can sign up for a winery bus tour through The Lodge as well but we didn’t end up doing that this time.

Laurentia Winery is about a 20-minute drive from Geneva-On-The-Lake. The grounds and restaurant at Laurentia are stunning, the dry wines are excellent, and we really enjoyed our time there. We ordered 2 of the daily specials and a glass of wine for a light lunch.

I ordered the Shrimp and Scallop Picattta and Alex ordered some Pork Medallions. For our wine choices, I had to try the Laurel Blanc (obviously!!) and Alex tried a Riesling. We both loved our choices and the fact that our wines were on the drier side. I love exploring Ohio’s wine country but sometimes the wine is very sweet, so Laurentia was a great discovery for us and has become our favorite Ohio winery.

Stop 2 on our Grand River Winery tour was Debonné Vineyards. We knew that this is one of the most popular wineries in the area so we wanted to go earlier in the day before the evening rush. Alex tried the dry red wines tasting and I opted for the dry whites. We both enjoyed our choices and had the best outdoor spot too, sitting under a little gazebo overlooking the vineyard with views of the whole winery and gardens outside.

We had intended to go on to M Cellars as well, but we decided to spend some more time back at our cottage and have another dinner at Horizons Restaurant at the lodge. We just wanted to have a relaxing last night before going home the next day. A few other wineries in the Geneva area that we love are M Cellars, South River Vineyard, and Benny Vino. Going Home After Your 3 Days In Geneva-On-The-Lake

I definitely recommend that you wake up early to catch the sunrise. It was such a peaceful experience to sit and watch the sun come up on our last morning at the Lodge. Check-out isn’t until 11 am but we had to head out early for work and I’m so glad we did or I probably wouldn’t have seen a sunrise during this trip. Photos just can’t do it justice – it was so beautiful!

Geneva, Ohio Excerpt from a past edition of OhioTraveler by Robert Carpenter

It’s not surprising that some people look upon their transgressions of youth as a badge of honor—but usually, the crowing starts only after reaching respectability and the statutes of limitation are in place.

The closest I can come to errant war stories are summer escapades at Geneva-on-the-Lake—and the statutes would be irrelevant.

My adventures were perhaps a little over the top at times, but mainly just a search for those things central to an unseasoned age—a few drinks, a lot of laughs, and of course, girls.

Frankly, I had never heard of the resort on the lakeshore until I moved to Ashtabula County in 1959.  Although youthful, a responsible job had brought me there—with a rather intolerant employer. Still, Geneva-on-the-Lake soon beckoned with the enticement of a fiery lover that fledglings always long for, rarely experience, and find impossible to resist.

In those days most of the crowd came from the northeastern corner—Cleveland, Warren, Youngstown, and across the state line. There was one lovely young lady who showed up almost every weekend. Over drinks and loud music, I understood her name to be Sewickley—uncommon, but a cute handle, I thought. Often, complete names in those surroundings were not surrendered, so that’s what I called her on following encounters, and she replied with giggles and good-natured grins. Imagine my embarrassment when I finally discovered she had been trying to tell me she was from Sewickley, Pennsylvania.

Visitors in recent years have come from a much wider geographic area, supposedly due to Geneva-on-the-Lake becoming more family-oriented. The resort took root about 140 years ago with parks and picnicking. One claim to fame is that in the early 1900s, it was a favorite camping area for Henry Ford and friends John D. Rockefeller and Harvey Firestone. So, from that vaunted beginning, the town has billed itself as “Ohio’s First Summer Resort.”

However, one thing should be clear. People coming to Geneva-on-the-Lake have never cared much about the history—the drawing card here is all-out fun.

And Geneva-on-the-Lake should not be confused with parks like Cedar Point or Six Flags.  Geneva-on-the-Lake is a village with a mayor and council charged with all the usual duties and responsibilities of managing a small municipality—it’s just that they understand their purpose better than most.

There are few permanent residents, and Memorial Day and Labor Day are the on/off switches for three months of frenzied activity. Unlike decades ago, some nightspots open year-round, but still, during much of the winter, you can fire a cannon down the mile-long thoroughfare—the “strip” they call it—without doing much damage.

On an up-to-date visit, it was evident that the natural lakeside ambiance of clean air and sunny beaches had not changed and will always be appealing.  But, after several decades, one would expect a transformation of the synthetic elements.

On the strip, there were a couple of amusement rides I didn’t remember, and most of the business fronts were unrecognizable, but to my delight, some were not. There was Eddie’s Grill—appearing almost as it had fifty years ago—and the old-style arcades presented fresh faces, but they were still there, lining the street.

Reminiscence flooded in—the concessionaires with whom I’d made friends—the after-hours, behind-the-scenes parties dissolved only by sunrise and scattered players like vampires. Those people led a lifestyle that I was unacquainted with.

It also occurred to me that aside from the fun factor, the most alluring element of Geneva-on-the-Lake is the throwback to the lighthearted ‘40s and ‘50s. It’s different. There was a time when it was a Mecca of the Big Band era featuring the likes of Glen Miller, Tommy Dorsey, and Duke Ellington. Currently, for the more reserved, the equivalent is free concerts every Tuesday evening throughout the summer at Township Park.

Of course, when I first arrived, local groups blasted out rock and roll, and there was still that ingredient of loud music and drink at the epicenter.

That’s the night scene, but there’s an abundance of entertainment to occupy the daylight hours, too. The eighteen-hole championship golf course south of the strip is where I first took up the game. The design and topography were more of a challenge than I wanted as a beginner. Today, it’s rated as one of the top 100 courses in the state.

The big change came in the mid-80s when the State of Ohio got into the act, creating new camping, hiking, and bathing facilities west of the strip in the Geneva State Park, a 698-acre facility with a 300-foot sand beach, a marina, outdoor pool, and several picnic areas. Overnight guests can choose from cabins or campsites.

The marina has 385 slips and a small boat harbor with six public boat ramps open. As boaters and jet skiers make their way in and out of the harbor, serious sun worshipers converge on the vast beach while kids rocket down the waterslide, play miniature golf, or race go-carts.

It’s the state park that brings families to Geneva-on-the-Lake. Most of them have endured air travel to the ultra-expensive theme parks popular since the ‘70s and have opted instead for longer, more economical vacations on Ohio’s north shore.

Another significant alteration has been in accommodations necessary for the family influx. Old cottages have been torn down and condos erected.  Modern hotels, motels, and bed and breakfasts that were once sparse are nearby and plentiful.

In addition to the casual hot dog and french-fry eateries of my day, there are fine restaurants such as the Crosswinds at Lakehouse Inn Winery that looks out over the water, and the Old Firehouse Winery with house-crafted wines, live music, and lakeside patio.

Yes, the village is more sophisticated and hospitable than it was in my youth, and the State Park is a big plus. Yet, regardless of the family lure, the strip reverberates as the only “real” Geneva-on-the-Lake. It still caters to, and probably always will favor, the young singles crowd. You see, to me Geneva-on-the-Lake is a state of mind. That’s my frame of reference; anyone from my era understands that.

The question now is: how long can a charming and venerable but archaic community like this be preserved before some progressive decides it all has to be ripped out and replaced with modern chic?

In the enclave of Fontana-on-Geneva Lake, The Abbey is billed as the only full-service lakeside accommodation. “The Abbey has undergone a beautiful renovation, and the property shines from its lakefront location," Krause says. "You can easily walk to nearby shops and restaurants in the village of Fontana."

Lake Lawn's 250 acres include two miles of Delavan Lake shoreline and 271 guest rooms with a balcony or patio.

One of Geneva Lake's main attractions is the public walking path. Krause explains that “the Shore Path is an amazing piece of living history. The path encircles the entire lake and is nearly 22 miles around, so most people walk just a portion of it at a time.”

You can see historic turn-of-the-century estates up close and modern new homes. “You walk through the lakefront yards of these homes. We don’t know of any other lake in the United States with this type of public access,” Krause says. 

Black Point Estate and Gardens 

"Set on the highest natural point of Geneva Lake, Black Point Estate is a historic house museum on the lake's southern shore," Hill says. The previous owners donated this summer residence to the state of Wisconsin for public enjoyment, and it's now recognized for its architectural significance on the National Historic Register. You can only access the Queen Anne-style home via Geneva Cruise Line's 3.5-hour private tour.

Yerkes Observatory

Yerkes Observatory , the birthplace of modern astrophysics, is one of the country's most important ground-based observatories. And it almost became condos. Thankfully, a group of dedicated locals and summer residents intervened to save the storied structure from demolition.

Krause expands: “Yerkes Observatory is housed in a grand, historic building with beautiful architecture … we are so grateful that it has been saved from the wrecking ball and development, and now open to the public for tours and events. Einstein was here! I’ve been on the tour a few times, and I love seeing the telescope and hearing about our local contribution to astronomic discoveries.” 

Mail Boat Run

Geneva Lake is one of only a handful of places in the U.S. that still offers mail service by boat. Join the 2.5-hour Mail Boat Run for an iconic area activity. The boat traverses the lake and makes about 50 mail drops.

“I’ve been on the mail boat tour several times. It looks so challenging to jump on and off the piers! But it’s a lot of fun to watch, and the residents get into it, too, waiting on the pier with kids or their dogs," Krause says. "Between stops, the mail jumper tells you about our lakefront history.” It's only offered in the summer from June 15 through Sept. 15, so plan your visit accordingly.

Big Foot Beach State Park

This 271-acre state park boasts five miles of hiking trails, a family campground, a picnic area, a swimming beach, and a playground. For excellent fishing, visit the on-site lagoon, a replica of Geneva Lake.

It's a special spot for Krause. “We originally moved to Lake Geneva because my dad became superintendent at Big Foot Beach. So we grew up enjoying the park as a family, taking walks, grilling out, and learning to cross-country ski in the winter,” she says. "Today, I take walks through the park with friends. Visitors love the open areas for big picnics, just across the street from the beach.”

One of Wisconsin's largest and deepest inland lakes, Geneva Lake is renowned for its cleanliness and gorgeous aquamarine hue — take advantage of it if you visit in the summer. Clearwater Outdoor offers kayak and standup paddleboard rentals. Hill suggests renting a motorboat, too. ​"It's a pretty large lake, about 5,000 acres, so renting a boat allows you to see more than paddling can. People love to rent pontoons, especially families," she says.

The Lake Geneva area is a golfer's delight. The two most notable spots are the Grand Geneva, which has two courses, and the Geneva National, which has three courses (one is reserved for members). If you can’t swing a tee time at these elite courses, plenty of other options exist. 

Oakfire Pizza

Oakfire Pizza is a must-visit for its wood-fired pizzas and inventive pasta. “I love Oakfire Pizza — the rustic décor, lake views, and the open floor plan. The bartenders craft creative cocktails, and we always share cheese curds, salad, and pizza," says Krause.

Helmed by Chef Simon Cumming, Sopra in Lake Geneva embraces Italian-American influences and seasonal products. “This is our top fine dining option right now. The food is fantastic, very eclectic," Hill says.

Simple Food Group Café, Market, and Bakery 

“ Simple Café is perfect for breakfast or brunch. It’s our go-to when we have guests from out of town because there’s something for every foodie and dietary restriction, and the menu changes seasonally,” says Krause. The cafe focuses on artisan products from southeastern Wisconsin producers.

Located on the Williams Bay side of the lake, Pier 290 provides an outdoor bar, sandy beach, fire pits, and a beautiful backdrop for a waterfront meal. "One of my favorite spots is Pier 290, the only restaurant directly on Geneva Lake. And it's actually built next to the working shipyard of Gage Marine, which just celebrated its 150th anniversary on the lake," Hill says.

Krause agrees: "Pier 290 is our special occasion destination, and by that, I mean birthdays, good days at work, or just a random Wednesday. We prefer the outdoor and tented seating, even in the winter. They have live music nearly every weekend, and the gift shop is not to be missed."

Though there's reason to visit Lake Geneva year-round, the traditional summer season (Memorial Day through Labor Day) is the most popular as the weather is warm and kids are out of school. But if you don't have to worry about school schedules, the spring and fall shoulder seasons offer mild weather and more affordable prices. The Geneva Lakes Boat Show at the Abbey , a showcase of vintage and classic boats from around the country, is popular in the fall.

Winter is also a special time to visit. According to Hill, “​Our busiest weekend of the year, and one of the most fun, is Winterfest weekend.” Every year, during the first week of February, Lake Geneva hosts the U.S. National Snow Sculpting Championship. “Teams fly in from all over the country, and they craft these massive, massive forms [in] downtown Lake Geneva … it is just a hoot,” Hill says.

The snowy season also allows for Nordic skiing, downhill skiing , ice fishing, and ice boating, when sailboats on metal runners glide on the frozen lake. “Hanging out at Chuck’s on a Saturday afternoon in the winter to watch ice boats is a rite of passage,” Hill says. 

Lake Geneva is 80 miles from Chicago and 40 miles from Milwaukee. If you're flying in from outside the region, O’Hare International Airport (ORD) or Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport (MKE) are your best bets, though MKE is preferable — it's closer to Lake Geneva and you'll encounter less traffic than if you drive from Illinois.

The Lake Geneva area doesn't have public transportation, so you need a car. Rent a vehicle at MKE or O’Hare . Milwaukee earns convenience points for an on-site rental car operation, while O’Hare provides free, 24-hour shuttle service to the rental car parking structure.

Among a flurry of surreal images capturing the dazzling auroras is one taken by Benjamin Williamson of a lighthouse in Portland, Maine.

"It's one of the most incredible things I've ever seen, the awe and wonder," Williamson told CNN.

He said he used a long-exposure technique to snap the shot, but did not edit it.

Things could be about to ramp up

If you still haven't seen the aurora, hold on for another 30 minutes to an hour, according to CNN meteorologist Chad Myers.

The next wave of coronal mass ejections, or CMEs, which cause the aurora, is about to arrive, he said.

"Just wait a minute because things are going to start to ramp up here," he said, adding that the increase could arrive "anytime now." "When it comes, get outside, get ready, put your coat on."

For those who are too busy to witness the phenomenon tonight, Myers said the aurora is expected to last three nights.

Why does the aurora last for a weekend?

Generally, it takes just eight minutes for light to travel 93 million miles to the Earth from the sun, but astrophysicist Janna Levin said the energized particles causing the current wave of aurora travel a lot slower, causing the phenomenon to last for the weekend.

"Some of these mass ejections are trillions of kilograms," she said. "They're slower. So they're taking longer, but still hours, maybe tens of hours."

Here's how the solar storm looks in the South and on the East Coast

The aurora was visible across the East Coast and in the South Friday.

Here's how it looked in Chester, South Carolina.

Down in Florida, waves of color swam through the sky.

Up north in New Jersey, a purple-ish haze could be seen in the sky.

Will solar storms get more intense and risky in the future?

The answer is probably not in the short term, according to astrophysicist Hakeem Oluseyi.

He said scientists study what is constantly happening on the surface of the sun and have found a pattern.

“Geological data shows us that in the past the sun was way more active than it is today. It has cycles where it goes very quiet ... and you have events that show that the solar activity was much, much greater,” he told CNN. “So there's no evidence that we're going to see those big maxima this cycle." 

But the astrophysicist also spoke of a caveat - the limitations of modern science.

“Even though it's predictable in the short term, we still don't quite understand what creates the magnetic fields in the sun,” he said, adding: “That's why NASA has so many satellites looking at the sun.”

A series of solar flares and coronal mass ejections from the sun are creating dazzling auroras across the globe .

The rare solar storm may also disrupt communications. The last time a solar storm of this magnitude reached Earth was in October 2003, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center.

Behind dazzling aurora could lie “real danger,” Bill Nye the Science Guy says

The massive solar storm could present “a real danger,” especially with the modern world relying so much on electricity, according to Bill Nye the Science Guy , a science educator and engineer.

Scientists are warning an increase in solar flares and coronal mass ejections from the sun have the potential to disrupt communication on Earth into the weekend. Solar flares can affect communications and GPS almost immediately because they disrupt Earth’s ionosphere, or part of the upper atmosphere. Energetic particles released by the sun can also disrupt electronics on spacecraft and affect astronauts without proper protection within 20 minutes to several hours.

In comparison to tonight's event, Nye drew comparisons with another incident in 1859, known as the Carrington Event, when telegraph communications were severely affected.

“The other thing, everybody, that is a real danger to our technological society, different from 1859, is how much we depend on electricity and our electronics and so on,” Nye said. "None of us really in the developed world could go very long without electricity."

He noted that there are systems in place to minimize the impact, but “stuff might go wrong,” stressing that not all transformers are equipped to withstand such a solar event.

“It depends on the strength of the event and it depends on how much of our infrastructures are prepared for this the sort of thing,” he said.

Here's where clouds will block the view of the northern lights in the US

After an incredibly stormy week, most of the Lower 48 has clear skies to see the northern lights. But there are some areas where clouds and rainy weather are spoiling the view.

A deck of clouds is blocking the sky in the Northeast, from parts of Virginia into Maine, as an area of low pressure spins off the East Coast.

In the Midwest, the aurora will be hard to see through thick clouds in parts of Wisconsin, Michigan — including the Upper Peninsula — and Illinois.

A stripe of clouds is tracking across Texas, including Dallas-Forth Worth, and into Louisiana.

And in the Southwest, patchy clouds across the the Four Corners region could make the northern lights difficult to spot.

Aurora seen at least as far south as Georgia

Barely visible to the naked eye, the aurora can be seen in Atlanta in the 10 p.m. ET hour. 

It is easier to see through photographs using a long exposure. The photos below, taken by CNN's Eric Zerkel and Emily Smith, used 3- and 10-second exposures.
