How to Travel With Groupon: Are Groupon All-Inclusives Legit? My Experience and Advice

Most people know Groupon as a great site to purchase local deals at significantly reduced prices.

Today, I'll fill you in on if it's a viable option for travel deals specifically. By the way, this is NOT a sponsored post (but does contain some affiliate links).

I will be speaking from experience—in November 2016 two friends and I did a Groupon Getaway to Sri Lanka. I'll lead you through exactly how I went about assessing the validity of the Groupon and organizing the trip.

Why are some people hesitant to travel with Groupon?

I think the majority of Groupon's customers normally have no problem buying products or deals on Groupon because it seems like a direct transaction (though it's not), but buying a Groupon travel deal clearly goes through Groupon and  a tourism company and I think that puts people off.

I believe the biggest reason people are unsure about planning a trip through Groupon is that Groupon is a middle-man.

What does that mean?

Groupon operates by entering agreements with local merchants and businesses to help sell whatever product or service that business provides, at some sort of benefit to that business.  This benefit is a combination of reaching a wider audience through advertisement on Groupon's website and being able to sell deals in multiples.

Why does Groupon only sell travel deals in pairs? Are they trying to get more of my money?

As said above, selling deals in multiples is what Groupon does specifically for its travel deals, which they refer to as Groupon Getaways.

Every Groupon Getaway is sold in pairs. Meaning if you see a trip to the Maldives for 1000USD, that price is contingent on you buying two units of that particular deal. If you buy just one through Groupon you'll be subjected to a “singles” fee to compensate for not buying two.

Because of the pandemic, many local travel agencies and tour providers have softened on their usual “double occupancy” requirement.

Meaning: solo travelers, it's your time to shine!

What should I be looking for in a genuine Groupon Getaway?

The first thing you should know is that Groupon does very in-depth research on each business and merchant they work with. Groupon does not want a bad reputation, or worse a lawsuit, from a customer's a bad experience.

With more than 48.3 million global active customers and over 90% Customer satisfaction, I'm inclined to trust most businesses advertised on Groupon.

But, you can't be too sure.

I'll walk you through the exact Groupon Getaway that I went on and how I was sure that it was legit, and the right Groupon for our trip.

My Sri Lankan Groupon Getaway.

Above is the exact  Groupon Getaway that my two friends and I went on. You should know that I was living in Dubai at the time, so this price is in Emirati dirhams (it would be 323.99USD). Getting this price for a trip to Sri Lanka from the US would be a much different price.

Part of the reason this trip is so inexpensive is that it did not include flights.

How can you tell?

If it included flights you would have seen the flights as drop-down option to pick, and it's also specified in the listing, as well as in the listing's header, as shown in the example below.

You can see from just this screenshot the details it already provides, most important being the name of the tourism company that will be facilitating your trip. In the screenshot you can see it on the bottom right as “Nelum Holidays” along with the link to the company website right below it.

In any Groupon Getaway you purchase you'll see this, and be able to check out the specific tourism company. I highly recommend doing this, and doing some Google searches for reviews of that local tourism company.

If it's popular, the Groupon Getaway will have reviews posted directly on Groupon as well at the bottom of the listing. Those are invaluable as well.

Always ready EVERY SINGLE DETAIL.

Above you'll  see details of the rest of my Sri Lanka travel listing. We wanted to make sure that we would have airport transport at the beginning and end of our trip as well as some meals would be included in our package. You're trip essentials will be listed under something along the lines of “Included with Package”, as is in the right of this screenshot. 

If you book this Groupon expecting every meal, transport, flights, free money showers, etc. all included in your stay but you don't see it in that section, DON'T BOOK.

Read the fine print, or better, call the local company to know exactly what you're getting in your Getaway.

Groupon's expiration date, cancellation policy, upgrade options, and booking instructions are all things to diligently read before confirming your booking.

Well, how did my trip turn out?

We booked the Getaway as a group of 4 people, and when that turned into 3 people I thought it would be a huge hassle negotiating with the local company and/or Groupon.

Luckily for us, the tourism company was kind enough to adjust the deal to let us 3 use our Groupon deals without a fourth person, and just put an extra bed in the one room. So my advice is when negotiating, always start with the local company as they're more likely to be flexible.

They sent us our itinerary in the days before our trip and I noticed that the days scheduled were moved around during the week (apparently the itinerary posted on Groupon is just a generic itinerary and they adjust for availability and weather), but it didn't bother us.

Each hotel we stayed at was exactly as described on the website, and by paying an extra 200AED each to get the deluxe deal, it felt absolutely 5-star. Our guide's English wasn't perfect but it was functional and for 3 women alone in Sri Lanka, we felt absolutely safe and comforted having a local guide us through the country.

In summary…

I freakin' love Groupon and have never had a bad experience, but always read the fine print and do your research.

Groupon does extensive research on the businesses they work with, but its better safe than sorry. Read reviews of the specific tourism companies on both the Groupon website and on Google.

I did an international trip to Sri Lanka, and by reading the fine print and communicating with the tourism company directly, we had a once in a lifetime adventure!

A final tip: Use Rakuten!

You should not be using Groupon if you aren't signed up for Rakuten !

Great tips here! I’ve seen a few good offers on Groupon but often have specific dates to go in so haven’t been available when they are. I would definitely try this though if I could!

I am a big fan of groupons but I have not done a trip with them. I have considered it a few times but I think in my case its been limited date availability that has prevented it.

I did book a trip though another company and we did have some issues though. The travel company did not put the flights in our names correctly. It was a bit stressful at the airport but it all ended up working fine. That could happen going direct with the company or through a middle man.

I had no idea that Groupon did travel packages! Or that you could get the discount buying with eBates at Groupon. So glad your trip turned out awesome and I’ll have to look into these for the future!

I browse the groupon travel deals (tbh, I browe all travel deals like its the daily news haha) very often. & while I have not yet taken a trip with groupon myself I notice very good deals, but like you said it is so important to read the fine print! & I agree with ebates! No matter what Groupon deal you’re considering, always price check it against the cost of booking it yourself directly. This will help you be sure that the Groupon is really worth it.

To find out if Groupon Getaways actually save you money, we compared three current Groupon travel deals against the cost of booking it on our own. We compared the prices based on two people traveling, as Groupon Getaways generally charges a single supplement fee for solo travelers. Here are the results:

The same hotel room costs more than double to book directly on Cofresi’s website

However, one of the FAQs on Groupon’s website should throw up a red flag regarding this hotel. “Will I be approached to attend a timeshare sales presentation? Our customers are never obligated to attend a sales presentation. If you are approached and decline a presentation, you will not lose the value of your voucher or have to pay additional fees.”

Be sure to check the reviews carefully (both on Groupon’s website and other sites to determine the quality of the hotel included in the deal.

What Is Travel Hacking—and Should You Be Doing It?

Since this deal is also available directly from Gate 1 Travel, we compared it against booking it through Gate 1 as well as booking it on our own.

Watch out for the Fine Print

Always read the terms and conditions before booking a Groupon Getaway. You’ll also want to carefully scrutinize what’s included in the deal. Here are a few things to look out for:

• Single supplements: How much extra will you have to pay if you’re traveling alone?
• Expiration date of Groupon voucher
• Age restrictions (many travel deals are for 21 and older)
• Cancelation policies
• Additional fees you’ll have to pay at check-in
• Flight options (including number of stops and departure times)
• Rental car options (generally the cheapest car type with a manual transmission is included, so you might want to investigate how much an upgrade will cost you.

Should You Book Through Groupon Getaways?

Groupon Getaways are undeniably a good deal. However, be warned that Groupon Getaway costs can quickly escalate from the rock-bottom advertised cost. For example, the Tuscany package mentioned above is promoted at $699, but will quickly increase to $849 if you would rather fly out of Miami. Adding the hotel “upgrade” package will be another extra cost. Picking a different departure date can bring the cost up to $1,049 per person. Make sure you pay attention to the extra price as you customize your trip.

Before booking, you should evaluate all of the options included in the deal. Independently research the hotel included in the Groupon Getaway. Is it in a good neighborhood? Does it have good reviews? Is it near the things you want to see and do? What bed types are included in the deal?

Also see if you can find out what flight options are included before committing. Is the flight nonstop or will there be layovers? Is the flight at a convenient time? 

Booking a trip through Groupon Getaways can definitely save you money. However, if you would rather have a bit more control over your flight times and hotel choices, Groupon Getaways can also be a great jumping off point to plan your own vacation. For example, if you see a cheap package deal to Tuscany, it likely means that travel to Tuscany is pretty inexpensive during the dates that the Groupon is valid. You could then look up your own flights and hotels for the same time period and find something similarly priced that would give you more flexibility than booking with Groupon. However, if you’d prefer not to have to do all of the trip planning research, and just want someone to take care of all the details, a Groupon Getaway can be a great deal.

For vacationers, scrolling through travel packages on Groupon Getaways feels like waltzing through a discount candy shop.

Consider this sampling of travel offers on Groupon Getaways, the travel section of the deals site Groupon. All of these trips include the cost of hotels and airfare:

7 days in Malta from $799 a person

The prices alone might make you want to start packing your bags. But they also raise the question: Is there a catch?

To find out, NerdWallet talked to three travel bloggers who used Groupon Getaways travel packages to see the world.

Why groupon getaways is worth trying, the downsides of groupon getaways, make the most of your groupon trip.

The travel packages offered by Groupon Getaways are typically run by third-party travel agencies and tour operators. Here’s why you might want to book one.

The planned-out trips are helpful for first-time travelers. Before Shelby Williams traveled to Mexico on an all-inclusive Groupon Getaways tour, she had never flown on a plane or left the country.

Having the whole trip planned out made it a less stressful introduction to international travel, says Williams, a college student in Freeland, Michigan. At $899 per person, the trip was also relatively affordable for Williams, her mom and her sister.

“It’s a great way to travel abroad, if you’re scared and don’t know where to start,” says Williams, who wrote about her experience on her travel blog, Lost Comfort Zone.

You can score great deals. Many of the packages on Groupon Getaways include airfare and top-notch accommodations for a relatively low price.

Williams, who has now been on three Groupon Getaways, says her favorite trip was to Costa Rica with her mom. It cost about $1,200 per person, including airfare, a car rental and a hotel. The hotel they stayed at was luxurious, with a swim-up bar, hot springs and beautiful landscapes.

Although she and her mom had to pay additional fees for activities — including zip lining and rappelling down a waterfall — she found the overall experience to be a good value.

The guided tours can be helpful. Some of the travel packages sold on Groupon come with guided tours or excursions (sometimes for an extra fee). For Maddy Osman, a travel blogger based in Denver, these guided tours were a huge plus — especially when she visited China.

Given the language barrier, “having a guide ... was almost necessary just to get around,” Osman says. She wrote about the trips she’s taken with Groupon Getaways on her online clothing website, Tanks That Get Around. (Disclosure: Osman’s blog contains affiliate links to Groupon Getaways.)

The tour guide in China also took the travelers to the city of Suzhou, where he was from. It wasn’t a place Osman would have thought to visit on her own, and she’s glad she was able to see it, she says.

They’re good for celebrating special occasions. For Christian Portilla, visiting Machu Picchu in Peru was a life-changing trip. Her now-wife had booked the trip through Groupon Getaways as a surprise. When the couple hiked to the top of the Incan citadel, the view was breathtaking.

“When you’re there, when you finally make it to the top and you feel the energy that the land has — it’s hard to describe, but it’s almost electric,” says Portilla, a freelance journalist based in Miami.

That’s when Portilla’s girlfriend got on one knee and proposed to her.

“I was shaking, I was crying. I wanted to say yes but I lost my voice because I was just freaking out,” says Portilla, who wrote about the trip on her blog, Roam Free Writes. “That’s a memory I’ll never forget.”

Here’s why a Groupon Getaway travel package might not be a good fit for you.

Dates can be limited. “It’s hard to find the perfect [trip] when you’re on a time range,” says Williams, who books her trips to coincide with her school’s spring break.

If you have an inflexible vacation schedule, you might have to compromise to find a good deal. When Williams wasn’t able to find a trip to Ireland that fit her schedule, she opted to go to Italy instead.

In some cases, sales pitches are baked into the itinerary. Guided tours will take you to plenty of popular destinations — but you might have to endure some tedious bouts of souvenir-shopping. Travel agencies can make money, in part, by taking tourists on shopping expeditions.

“A lot of them have this pretense of, ‘Oh, we’re giving you a tour of the factory’ or whatever. And they give you an hour or something to shop,” Osman says. “And if you’re not interested in shopping, that’s an hour of your trip you can’t get back — because you’re more than likely in the middle of a day of the tour, so you can’t just peace out if you want to see the next thing.”

The accommodations can be subpar. While many of the hotels in Groupon Getaways are high-quality, some aren't.

The hotel Portilla stayed at in Cusco, Peru, had limited water. Because of that, the toilet in the room couldn’t be flushed unless a hotel worker was called in to flush it.

“We weren’t able to take full showers or baths or anything like that,” Portilla says, adding that they had to rinse off by filling little cups with water from the sink. It would have been nice to know about the situation in advance so they could have prepared, she says.

Williams says that many of her hotel stays through Groupon Getaways were excellent, but not all. “The one in Rome was kind of bad. Our neighbor was puking all night, and we could hear that. The walls were paper-thin,” Williams says.

If you’re unhappy with your accommodations, you can call the Groupon Getaways customer service line to file a property complaint.

“Property complaints do happen. They’re not among our top complaints, but they do happen. If they call us, we’ll call the hotel and sort of work out the details,” says Chris Stevens, vice president of Groupon Getaways. In cases where Groupon has done something egregiously wrong, he adds, the company may issue a refund.

Going on a Groupon Getaways vacation essentially means going on a trip someone else planned for you. It can be a lot of fun — but if you don’t fully understand the itinerary, some details might surprise you. Here’s what you should know.

Understand what you’re buying. If the travel package you’re looking at seems unusually cheap, it could be because:

The price doesn’t include airfare

The excursions and guided tours cost extra

The cost is for a dual occupancy hotel room; solo travelers might have to pay more

Check these details before you book to make sure you know what you’re getting into. Osman recommends reading the reviews of travel agencies and hotels before booking, too.

Master the details. When Portilla and her partner went to Peru, neither of them had read through the full details of the trip. Because they didn’t have cell service in Peru, they weren’t able to check email for details on their phones.

“Read the fine print,” Portilla says. “Or you’ll find yourself at the airport and you don’t know who’s picking you up.”

Renting a car? Do your research. If your travel package includes a car rental, it helps to know what driving conditions are like in the country you’re visiting. Don’t forget to bring maps or a GPS, Williams says.

When she and her mom went to Costa Rica, a car rental was included in their trip. But their GPS didn’t work because they hadn’t downloaded the maps beforehand, and they were surprised to find that the roads didn’t have signs. Without a properly functioning GPS, driving to their hotel at night felt like an impossible task. Next time, Williams says, they’ll come prepared.

Is Groupon Worth It?

Yes, as long as you realize it's not always perfect! 

You can find incredible deals on Groupon if you read the fine print and do your research. I know a couple who arranged their whole holiday via Groupon. 

Saving money while traveling  was always a big priority for them. They saved a huge amount on parking fees at their local airport with a Groupon voucher. 

It helped that they weren't particularly picky about where to go, so they booked a so-called "Mystery Getaway" via Groupon and were lucky enough to get a week in the Maldives, including flights and accommodation, for a ridiculously low price.

Even if you only use Groupon to save here and there, it's still worth signing up. Saving a few dollars for a nice lunch or saving 50% off the entry for some tourist attractions adds up fast.

“There is no better way for parents to find unique local activities for children to have a family fun day,” says Janice Robinson-Celeste, CEO of Successful Black Parenting magazine. “Jump onto Groupon's website, and you'll find everything from traveling exhibits to bumper cars.”

Launched in 2008, Groupon originally offered a single deal per day. To activate the deal, a certain number of people would have to buy in. Customers can still search for offers by location, but many deals are available to shoppers regardless of where they live. Trae Bodge, a smart shopping expert with the website TrueTrae.com, suggests users hover over the bell icon on the Groupon homepage to see specials such as the site’s Deal of the Day. “This is an easy way to find the best deals on Groupon,” she says.

If you buy goods on Groupon, check the reviews to see whether other customers believe the item is represented accurately on the website. As for services, watch for red flags that could indicate a fraudulent deal, such as no reviews or very few purchases.

“Find the location on Google street view to see what the neighborhood looks like,” advises Robinson-Celeste. An address that isn’t an obvious business or doesn’t match what you would expect for the product or service being offered could be a warning sign.

Also check the company's website and social media accounts to confirm it matches the details on Groupon. If it seems too good to be true, contact the business directly to confirm they posted the offer. If you find yourself on the receiving end of counterfeit goods or a fake voucher, contact Groupon immediately.

Understand the Fine Print

Don't buy any deal vouchers until you've reviewed the redemption requirements. “Always read the fine print and check the expiration date,” says Rebecca Gramuglia, consumer expert at cash back website TopCashback.com.

Other fine print details include additional fees and charges , restrictions for new customers only or access to a limited menu or selection of products when redeeming a Groupon voucher. Some Groupon deals may only be used on specific days. “Keep in mind that there may be a waiting period in the terms that prevents you from using it on the same day of your purchase,” Gramuglia adds.

Be sure to check the refund and cancellation policy too. If you are on vacation and purchase a Groupon for a weather-dependent activity, like whale watching, what happens if the company cancels? If you don't live in the area, you may not be able to reschedule, so make sure you can get a full refund.

Not All Deals Are Created Equal

At the website's start, it wasn't unusual to see deals on Groupon for 70% off retail prices. Nowadays, you might find 35% off a haircut or 10% off a car wash. Deeper discounts may be found on travel packages and physical goods.

However, beware of inflated retail prices. Just because something is listed on Groupon at a substantial discount doesn't make it a good deal. Customers still need to do their research, compare prices and read reviews to ensure they are spending their money wisely.

“Groupon's deep discounts create a sense of urgency and also make services, expenses and products appear more affordable,” says Andrea Woroch, a nationally recognized family finance expert. “However, if there's something you didn't plan to buy, don't buy it just because it's on sale.”

Promo Codes and Cash-Back Sites Offer Additional Savings

Customers can save even more by using promo or coupon codes or shopping through a cash back website when ordering from Groupon.

“When it comes to shopping at Groupon, you are already getting a deal, but there are even more options to take the savings further,” Gramuglia says. “Be sure to shop through a cash back site, like TopCashback, to earn the highest percentage of your money back when shopping at Groupon.”

Though not always available, coupons codes can also be found on free deal aggregators such as Slickdeals, DealCatcher or the browser extension Honey. A typical coupon may take 20% to 30% off the price of select Groupon purchases.

Payment Options Can Vary by Deal

While Groupon accepts all major credit cards and PayPal for purchases on its site, vendors may have different payment requirements when it comes time to redeem a voucher. For instance, not all merchants accept American Express cards. However, this information should be included on the deal page and is one more reason to read the fine print.

Is Groupon Legit for Businesses?

While Groupon may not make sense for all businesses, it is a legitimate way for companies to get their goods and services in front of a wider audience.

“We’ve worked with more than one million merchant partners to date,” Halliwell says. “As a pay-only-for-performance marketing channel, we don’t take anything upfront from our merchants.”

In order to make an offer enticing to shoppers, businesses may have to offer a discount that significantly reduces their profit, and Groupon users may not turn into repeat customers.

Despite that, businesses may find it worthwhile to tap into the vast marketing potential of Groupon. And savvy consumers who read reviews and watch for the deals they offer will undoubtedly benefit too.

I have seen some awesome deals in the United States but some great ones for international travel. I would love to book something to Europe but am afraid if something happens or it's not honored since it's done through Groupon.

Anyone ever travel using Groupon - especially out of the States? What was your experience? Is getting a groupon ok for international?

Sorry that I don't have experience with Groupon to share however I have found legitimate offers on TravelZoo.

You can sign up and they too will automatically arrive in your email box. Then explore all of the offers not just the ones on the front page. The thing that makes these safe is that the offers (at least the ones I've checked) can be (recommended) booked by your local travel agent though sometimes travel agents don't realize it.

I've looked at a few Groupon travel deals in the past. It takes some extra research to uncover the actual booking agency (reputation), Terms & Conditions, and "fine print" of such offers. But, if you research wisely, I'm sure you can get good deals. The problem is there are limitations clearly stated - and then one "discovers" them later after booking - and is disappointed. Google is a good place to start. And check, as noted above - to see if you can book the same trip other places - possibly for similar or not much more - to feel more secure.

Another bargain source for which you may want to sign up is LivingSocial. In the past few months I have purchased retail items from both Groupon and LivingSocial with full satisfaction. I know that you want to buy travel though. Good luck.

I too get TravelZoo like CapeCodCharlie. I haven't used them but my recent trip I found people staying in the same hotel for an even cheaper price than I got. Turned out to be one I hadn't opened wouldn't you know it.

It goes direct to the companies making the offer and you can phone or email them so there should be no problems with it being honoured.

Here's what you need to know before you buy that Groupon vacation deal

There are times in life that call for caution, for using that chunk of money in savings to renovate the bathroom because the bathroom is from 1974, and not in a cool way.

But then, there are times Groupon comes along.

A few years back, it happened to me most notably right after a bad breakup. A trip to Paris and Rome, including hotel and airfare, breakfasts and rides to the airport, appeared in my in-box. It was $1,500 for all. A stock photo of the Eiffel Tower danced off the screen. Buy it now , a voice said, a voice wearing a beret. Ask questions later . I enlisted a friend and we clicked oui, oui .

At the time, it was the biggest Groupon I had ever purchased, but I knew it would be fine. I had already come to embrace discount vouchers as my primary mode of travel. Yes, Groupon and LivingSocial, the websites where you get your discount hot stone massages and city Segway tours.

When I tell people I regularly travel using Groupon Getaways or LivingSocial Escapes, I get the same reaction. Wonderment, followed by skepticism, followed by questions.

A) They're surprised it's even a thing.

"Our biggest problem with Getaways is the awareness," said Chris Stevens, who runs the North American travel branch at Groupon. "A lot of people are familiar with the nail salons and food and other things that we're selling pretty consistently. Travel is a little bit different of a creature."

B) There's usually some awkward question, like, "Is it ... nice?" Reading between the lines, they want to know if they are going to be housed in Rome's finest Leatherface shed.

There is risk inherent in buying any trip online, or really, any trip at all. Suppliers pay Groupon a cut to use the service. They also have reservations, Stevens said, but it's about clientele. Just as guests are looking for quality accommodations, hotels and attractions are looking for quality guests.

Anything sketchy is perception, he said.

"It's not only people that have no money that are looking for deals," he said. "Our household income, I think you'd find it's way above average, and it's a good audience. (Suppliers) come back and say, we ran these deals and we got really high-quality customers."

I was nervous the first time. I bought a LivingSocial voucher for a rental vacation house in Sonoma, Calif., and it did not provide the address up front. It turned out to be a gem, tucked into a modest, yet charming, neighborhood. We couldn't walk to downtown, but it felt like a true escape.

Since then, I've been to an all-inclusive resort in Jamaica, to Niagara Falls and to plenty of Florida hotels using vouchers. I've also been on a less-than-impressive Bahamas cruise (more on that soon). For my upcoming honeymoon, we booked an island-hopping trip to Greece on LivingSocial. As friends and family catch on that I like to travel this way, the more Groupon gift cards I get for holidays.

So, when people flash that tentative stare, here are some of the things I share.

Embrace the agencies

Here's the big secret: Travel agencies are a thing.

Typically, after you buy a deal voucher, Groupon or LivingSocial gets out of the way and hands things over to a travel agent, or an online tour operator like Go-today or Great Value Vacations. You call. You give your voucher code. A nice person on the other end books out the trip from start to finish.

Before buying the Groupon to Paris and Rome, I had never used a travel agency. They seemed out of reach, perhaps old-fashioned or haughty. I could go online and book my own plane tickets, thank you. It wasn't that hard.

Mind changed! For a big, complicated trip with lots of stops, flights, shuttles and changes, I'll never go back.

"It's good for people to connect with businesses they may not be familiar with," said Erika Richter, communications director for the American Society of Travel Agents. "Our travel agents are getting creative in how they market and sell themselves and everyone has their own way of doing it."

Groupon uses a mix of agencies, Stevens said. And Richter points out that there's nothing like a human being with expertise. Even if you're not using a deal website, travel agents can help you work within a budget.

Decide how much control you need

Are you someone who, metaphorically, never lets the food touch?

Do you like to know detail about every hotel? Do you insist on picking your airline seat? Is it really important to be in the heart of the action versus a residential neighborhood?

Deal packages often list a hotel that you'll probably be staying at, but it could be one of a similar size and rating. That said, many tour operators who supply vacations to deal sites will work with you to customize or upgrade a trip. Want a nicer room? They'll find it.

When my friend and I went to Paris and Rome, we decided we were too old to share a room. For an extra fee ($500 each), we were able to get separate rooms. It was a big chunk of change, but worth it in the end.

Every hotel I've stayed at from a deal site has been clean and comfortable. There have been quirks, like the shower head that pointed directly out of the stall and onto the bathroom floor. But isn't that the charm of international travel?

If all this induces anxiety, it might not be your ticket.

Do research before you buy

See if it's really the best deal.

When booking my Greek honeymoon, I checked several online tour provider sites, including Go-today and Gate 1 Travel, to see packages outside of the deal sites. I noticed when they had a good deal on their regular sites, they didn't have one on the deal sites, and vice versa.

LivingSocial was the best deal at the time, but I would have been willing to buy directly through the travel provider if the price was right.

Same goes when booking hotels on deal sites. Check around to other booking services and directly with the hotel to make sure it's really a bargain.

Read the fine print and focus on details

Is the deal for two people traveling together? Do you have transportation between locations on your trip? These things can add up, making your deal less of a deal than you thought.

If it says eight days, it means six nights. And check the weather wherever you're going. Deals abound in the off seasons, but that could mean hitting a destination at the coldest, least desirable time of year.

About flights: Most deals will list a few departure cities including New York and Boston, but if you read the fine print, you often have more options.

I've changed flights from the listed cities to Tampa several times, for a moderate upcharge (less than $50 to Europe). Then again, don't take that for granted. Call the agency before you buy the voucher and have them price out your specifics.

A couple of months ago, my fiance and I bought an awesome Groupon deal to Spain, scheduled to fly out on New Year's Day. We soon realized changing the flight to go out of Tampa on a holiday was going to be an extra $900. No deal!

Thankfully, Groupon has a pretty relaxed return policy and gave us a full refund, which leads me to my next tip.

Make sure you understand the refund parameters before you buy.

Sometimes, a deal is too good

So, that Bahamas cruise Groupon. Let's discuss.

It was something in the neighborhood of $200 for a few days from Tampa to the islands. Food was included. It was cheaper than my fiance and I getting a hotel for the weekend.

We didn't get food poisoning or lost at sea. The room was clean. The chow was serviceable.

To be honest, it was just kind of lame. We made the most of it, but could tell it was an older boat. Activities were cheesy or lacking. And it felt like one big sales pitch. Whenever we'd start to relax, the cruise director would come on an intercom and try to sell us Trollbeads. "Every bead has a story, every story has a bead" is burned into my mind.

But, hey. It was $200. Even deals have their limits.
