Elounda is a cosmopolitan town/village with a small fishing port. It has several sandy beaches all in walking distance from the centre (square)

The square has many bars, restaurants and fast food businesses. You can even find a few kafenions here the real traditional watering holes.

Elounda's fishing port also offers boat trips to the nearby Island of Spinalonga (Kalidon) which in the past was used as a leper colony.

Near the main beach a little way from the square is a children's play area. There are shops, bars and restaurants close by. The beach has been awarded the blue flag.

Near to this beach there is also boat trips and one boat called the Shark's Eye has a glass bottom and is a hydrofoil.

If you walk back through the square to the other end..you will see a street going up a bank. You probably came down this street on your coach. On this street there are shops, bars, restaurants and Jewellery shops, Fashion shops, tourist shops, and even a couple of night clubs.

Going further up this street you will see a cut going down to the left. You will see a sign saying "Sanken City Of Olous"(yes sanken) This was the original Elounda many questions are being asked about this city "was Olous the real Atlantis from Myths and Legends ?" As you walk along the causeway you may still see some of the walls of the city in the water. Keep walking and you will come across a small beach, with a large old stone building at the end of it. This building was originally built as a storage building. Keep walking along and to you right you will see some old windmills. Here is a beautiful spot over the bridge a small canal with fishing boats to the side. You will also see the original stone bridge now broken. This Canal was built by the French many many Years ago. There are many things to see this side of the bridge .......and if you are fit and can put up with the heat even a beautiful fine white sand beach.

Spinalonga island [ edit ].

happy travel elounda

Spinalonga Island (Σπιναλόγκα) is the setting for the bestseller "The Island" by Victoria Hislop that was made into a popular television mini-series. The novel chronicles the history of the island as a leper colony through the lives of a family from Plaka. Spinalonga Island is easily accessed by boat from Agios Nikolaos, Elounda, and the small village of Plaka.

The island of Spinalonga (Καλυδών, Kalidon) has captured the imagination of many throughout its long history. Since millennia past, artists, musicians and authors have romanticised and written about this island. It is one of the most visited tourist attractions on Crete, and annually thousands of visitors walk along the narrow streets through the village on Spinalonga. The name 'Spinalonga,' which means 'Long Thorn,' came from the Venetians after a small island near Venice. The official name is Kalidon , but so well known is its former name that even the sign posts and the boats that take you to the island will call it only by its Venetian name.

Spinalonga is an island fortress on the southwestern entrance to the Gulf of Elounda. It is 5.6km away from Skisma (the central village of Elounda). On the rocky island of Spinalonga, a fortress was built even from ancient ages to protect the port of the ancient Eloundians. It is reported that many Christians from the surrounding village took refuge in the ruins to save themselves during the time that the Saracens overtook Crete.

In 1579, the Venetian rulers built the powerful fortress for the safety of the port of Elounda, enclosing the area from hostile ships. It was originally part of the mainland, but the Venetians undertook the engineering project of turning it into an island. In 1630, the fortress seemed to be impregnable but in 1715, the Kapoudan Pasha, the Turkish captain, besieged it at close quarters and took it. During the 1821 Revolution, it was a safe haven for many Turks, and during the 19th century it was the main port that was importing and exporting goods for the entire region of Mirabello. In 1881, it had 1112 Ottoman inhabitants who were involved in commerce, and they comprised the local council. During the revolution of 1821, 1866 and 1897, it was besieged by Cretan rebels.

By edict of the State of Crete, from 1904 Spinalonga was used as a gathering point and place of refuge for Cretans suffering from leprosy. After a couple decades, it became the home of those from all over Greece who were suffering from the disease. Before this time, lepers lived a harsh life as outcasts, many living in the caves that riddle Crete and other areas of Greece. Exile to Spinalonga was harsh, as many people were separated from their families on the mainland. But at least they had company. People fell in love, married, and had children. There was agriculture and farm animals and a school. Goods were brought daily from the mainland. It was one of the safest places to be during the Nazi occupation of the island. Nonetheless, life was difficult. Death from leprosy was often very painful, and a number of the exiles committed suicide by leaping into the sea from the high fortress walls. With the progress of science, a cure was found, and the hospital was closed in 1957 as those who were now cured returned to their homes around the country.

Practical Information The boat from Plaka takes only about ten minutes, and is reasonably priced. From Elounda or Agios Nikolaos, the boat ride is longer and more costly. During the season, boats depart from several locations in all three towns. If you are going late in the day, make sure you know when the last boat departs the island. Additionally, boarding a boat back to mainland is pretty informal. You can get on just about any of them. Make sure you know which town it is heading for, or you could end up miles from your car. As long as you are going back to the right town, it really doesn't matter which boat you get on. You may end up at a slightly different location than where you originally boarded, but the walk will not be far.

There is a nominal fee to enter the site, and you can purchase guide books in several languages when you pay for your ticket. You can spend an entire day exploring this fascinating place, but you should set aside at least two hours, plus the boat ride. During the heat of the summer, it is a good idea to try to go as early in the day as possible. Bring a bottle of water. There is a small taverna/cafe and public toilets at the landing area. You cannot picnic inside the site, but you can picnic outside the fortress walls around the landing area. To fully explore the entire island requires a great deal of walking, up inclines and up and down steep stairs. For those who cannot manage all this walking, the most interesting part of the island can be done quite easily without all the inclines and stairs. This area is the main part of what was the village, including the "main street" shops, many homes, and public buildings like the hospital and church.

There are many tavernas clustered around the embarkation/disembarkation areas in Plaka, Elounda, and Agios Nikolaos. The owners will actively invite you to have your lunch at theirs when you return. Don't feel pressured to go into the first one. Take a stroll to find the one that really appeals to you.

A QUICK GUIDE TO ELOUNDA, CRETE

Crete has so many towns to tempt you but our destination of choice and recommendation is a little village called Elounda.

Elounda was once a small fishing village and still remains relatively untouched by tourism. Unlike Malia just over the hill, where the party lasts all night, Elounda is the place to come for quiet, calm and incredible fresh Greek food! The path that runs along the waterfront is full of tavernas, bars, and restaurants, all offering the most incredible delights.

Things To Do In Elounda

Day trip to spinalonga.

One of my favourite days of our trip was an adventure over to Spinalonga, a small island which faces Elounda and its neighbouring village Plaka. The tiny island once belonged to the mainland of Kalydon but was separated by The Venetians centuries ago.

It’s more recently remembered for being a leper colony, which is how it was used all the way up until 1958 when the last leper, a priest, left the island for the last time. The lepers were taken on boats from Plaka to live out their days away from the mainland, but close enough so that they could see the lives they were missing out on.

This tiny place was made famous by Victoria Hislop’s book ‘The Island’ and has injected a lot of curiosity into travellers in this area of Crete. Spinalonga is a 20-minute boat ride across the sparkling turquoise water from Elounda’s main square and harbour and costs €12 for a return journey.

Make a note to take your own bottle of water across with you from the mainland as the island only has one shop/bar where they charge a fortune!

The island itself is now pretty much ruins of the streets and churches lived in by the lepers, but it’s really quite beautiful and sad in equal measures. The views across the water to the mainland are stunning but must have been absolute torture to look at every day for the people who were stuck there.

I couldn’t get my head around the fact that these ruins weren’t that old, and would have been lived in as recently as 60 years ago.

Ride The Happy Train

Another highlight of our Cretan adventure was an afternoon spent on a little red road train, known as ‘ The Happy Train ’. This was a four-hour excursion from Elounda Beach which cost €18 per person. The little train took the waterfront road along to Plaka which has undisturbed views of Spinalonga.

We were able to walk through this tiny village which is made up of only a handful of tavernas and a few shops. I was fascinated by the freshly caught octopus hanging out to dry, like washing on a line, alongside tanks of lobster, all ready to be ordered that evening.

The train met us on the other side of the village and then we started our climb into the mountains. When I tell you the views were stunning from up there, I mean they were so gorgeous I could have stood there for hours just breathing it all in.

Elounda is pretty much surrounded by mountains or water so to look down over this pretty jewel of a village felt so special. We then continued further up into the mountains and over the other side where we were taken to two tiny mountain villages.

The last village we reached was called ‘Seles.’ We were greeted by the village dogs with the warmest welcome and waved to by an elderly lady who came out of her tiny house to say hello to us.

The village is home to only ten families and it felt like a tiny glimpse into a life that I will never get to experience. A life where the bus only comes once a week to take locals into a bigger town. A life where the only shop is a bakery and the average age is sixty! A life where mobile phones will have no use and the pace is almost at a standstill.

I wouldn’t be able to function here for a long time without going a little stir crazy, but this little peek into the mountain village lifestyle definitely made my brain slow down and reminded me to appreciate all of my luxuries.

I returned to Elounda feeling incredibly lucky and grateful for all that life provides for us and being in the fortunate position to even be on this holiday – Mind and heart well and truly reset!

Hike Kalydon

There is also a causeway over to Kalydon island which is home to a beautiful Art hotel and cafe . After a little wander along the shore, we decided to follow the little red and white spots that were marking out the route of a scenic walk/hike!

The walk ended up being an 8km/4 hour trek around the entire island, but it was so worth it. We were completely alone on our walk and didn’t see another person apart from those anchored up in their yachts in the tiny blue alcoves, pure bliss!

The last thing that deserves to be talked about are the people of Elounda. We felt welcomed wherever we went, whether it was to a restaurant or just walking along the road from our hotel . Every evening we passed a little restaurant called ‘Thea’ on our walk towards the water, and every evening without fail the owner would wave and smile.

We ended up eating in his restaurant twice and the hospitality was perfect! The same was true of Yannis, the owner of ‘Olondi’ who chatted and showed us photos of his farm and his animals which he was obviously incredibly proud of. We literally felt like family being welcomed home, even though we’d never been to their village before.

Where To Eat

I highly recommend ‘ Olondi .’ I had the best seafood I’ve ever tasted at this restaurant – it was so good and the staff were so warm and welcoming that we actually ate there three times! If you’re a seafood lover like me I would strongly suggest trying the seafood risotto which was full to the brim with prawns, octopus, and mussels.

Or if there are a couple of you, then try their ‘Fish Fantasia,’ the most seafood I’ve ever seen on a plate plus a whole grilled sea bream, yum!

I’m sure there were other incredible excursions we would have loved and bigger cities like Agios Nikolaos that we could have spent more time in, but for me, these few trips were absolute perfection. The sun, wonderful food, and gorgeous people just made Elounda the dreamiest place to recharge. If you find yourself on the north side of Crete for a few days I couldn’t recommend it more.

Crete is a busy island during peak tourist season, but Elounda can offer an escape from that. Although it does get some travelers, it isn’t nearly as busy as some of the other spots on the island. Rather, it feels tucked away and provides a nice, relaxing haven for those looking to get away from it all.

The World's 30 Happiest Countries & People: 2024 List

I n 2012, the United Nations declared March 20 as the International Day of Happiness . Twelve years later, the 2024 World Happiness Report , which just released its latest rankings of the world's happiest countries, zeroed in on the happiness of people at different stages of life.

Regardless of whether you're young or old, these are the countries where people rate themselves as happiest and are most satisfied with their lives.

What is the happiest country in the world?

According to the 2024 World Happiness Report, Finland is the happiest country in the world for the seventh year in a row. It's followed by Denmark, Iceland, Sweden, Israel, and the Netherlands in the annual survey released on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, that ranks countries by how happy their citizens perceive themselves to be. European countries, including Norway, Switzerland, and Luxembourg dominate the rest of the top 10. (It's worth noting that the survey in Israel took place after the attacks on October 7, 2023, but before the ensuing escalation in warfare, according to the report.)

The only country beside Israel outside of Europe to make the top 10 in 2024 is Australia, which ranked 10th. The United States dropped considerably to 23rd this year, down from its spot at 15 in the rankings last year, while the United Kingdom dropped one spot since last year to 20th.

Why are the Finnish so happy?

"Finnish happiness boils down to the simple things in life: connecting with nature, caring for one's mind and body, and appreciating design and art around us. Happiness can be found in moments of pure contentment you get when the setting is just right: on a bike ride in a forest with the perfect playlist on or enjoying a post-sauna sausage while cooling off on a beautiful summer evening," stated Heli Jimenez, senior director of international marketing at Business Finland, which is part of the Finnish Ministry of Employment and the Economy.

The World Happiness Report bases its annual rankings predominantly on data from the main life evaluation question in the Gallup World Poll .

In it, respondents are asked to rate their current lives on a scale of 0 to 10, with 10 being the best possible life for them and 0 being the worst possible life. The countries that made the top 10 this year ranged from Australia's 7.057 up to 7.741 for Finland at the top. Afghanistan had the lowest score at 1.721.

While these results are based entirely on self-reported perceptions of satisfaction, factors that the World Happiness Report says contribute to making these life evaluations better in each country include a higher GDP per capita, a strong social support system, higher life expectancy, greater freedom, absence of government and corporate corruption, and charitable giving.

"Rankings differ a lot for the young and the old. In some cases these favor the old, as in the United States and Canada, where the rankings for those aged 60 and older are 50 or more places higher than for those under 30. In other cases, especially in Central and Eastern Europe, the reverse is true, with many rankings being more than 40 places higher for the young than for the old," the Happiness Report concludes. "In almost every global region . . . social interactions add to happiness, with their effects flowing through increases in social support and reductions in loneliness."

The 30 happiest countries in the world in 2024

If you're looking for inspiration for your upcoming travels and like the idea of traveling to a place where happiness is in ample supply, these are the 30 happiest countries in the world, according to the 2024 World Happiness Report.

Can traveling to the happiest country in the world bring you greater joy?

In Finland, it's a common belief that happiness is "a skill that can be learned," according to the country's tourism marketing organization Visit Finland , which has unveiled a new five-day Helsinki Happiness Hacks urban expedition that will be free for select participants.

Those who are interested in participating have until April 4, 2024, to apply; Visit Finland will then select a group of lucky travelers to come to Helsinki to learn "new happiness hacks that they can apply to their everyday life"-free of charge. To be considered, applicants must complete a social media challenge and an online form .

From June 9 to 14, 2024, a group of "Helsinki Happiness Hackers" will guide participants on what makes the city's residents so happy, based on four categories: nature and lifestyle, health and balance, food and well-being, and design.

Finland's friendly locals, thriving culture and coffee scenes , and unfettered access to nature all make it a great destination for those looking to find greater joy in their own travels.

Arts and culture lovers will be thrilled to explore Helsinki's museums. In the past few years, Helsinki opened Amos Rex , a world-class contemporary art museum, and Oodi , an energy-efficient public library at the center of the city designed to be the nation's "living room."

If being outdoors makes you happiest, Finland has plenty of that, too. Like many other Nordic residents, Finns have a close relationship to nature and get outside even during the coldest months . Finland is also home to numerous islands, many of which make for an idyllic remote escape . For those who want to relax in a serious way, Finland has more than 3 million saunas .

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

happy travel elounda

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

happy travel elounda

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

happy travel elounda

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

happy travel elounda

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

happy travel elounda

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

TSA prepping for massive surge in Memorial Day travel

by: Jonathan Williams

Updated: May 16, 2024 / 05:55 PM PDT

Summer travel season could be the busiest ever, according to the Transportation Security Administration.

Beginning on Memorial Day weekend, TSA is predicting next Friday will be the busiest travel day of this year, with close to 3 million passengers in airports across the U.S.

From May 23 to May 29, the agency is expecting to screen close to 18 million passengers and flight crews crossing through airport security checkpoints.

“In close coordination with airport, airline and travel partners, we are more than ready to handle this summer’s increased travel volumes,” said TSA Administrator David Pekoske.

Last year, cities like Los Angeles experienced record air travel during the holiday season.

“We are also continuing to deploy state-of-the-art checkpoint technology that increases security effectiveness, efficiency and enhances the passenger experience and our retention and recruitment numbers are the highest they’ve ever been,” Pekoske added.

This comes after testimony from Pekoske about the investment into TSA, addressing screening technology, passenger security fees and cybersecurity along with several other topics.

Just last year, TSA experienced issues across the agency after more than $2 billion in spending, resulting in long lines and additional screenings.

In April, the Biden administration announced a final rule for major airlines, demanding greater transparency on fees and streamlining the rules to make it easier on passengers.

“Passengers deserve to get their money back when an airline owes them—without headaches or haggling,”U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in the announcement. “Our new rule sets a new standard to require airlines to promptly provide cash refunds to their passengers.”

Other details released by TSA included several important travel tips like having a REAL ID , knowing your TSA PreCheck Known Traveler Number (KTN) or contacting TSA directly with any questions.

Despite the onset of a recession and record-high inflation , Americans are still heading to the terminals as summer approaches.

A Proclamation on Mother’s Day,   2024

Today, we show gratitude to moms and mother-figures for loving their children unconditionally; raising them with care, courage, and grit; and leading by the power of their example.

On my desk in the Oval Office, I have a picture of my mother, Catherine Eugenia “Jean” Finnegan, in Grant Park on the night that President Barack Obama and I won the 2008 election.  That night, my mother walked on stage, took my and President Obama’s hands, and said, “Come on honey, it’s going to be okay.”  That was my mother — fearless, caring, and ready to lend anyone the bravery that always resided in her heart.  She taught my siblings and me that courage was the greatest virtue, instilled in us the belief that everyone is your equal, and inspired us to lead lives defined by honor and integrity.

I have also seen the way that my wife, First Lady Jill Biden, has put her whole heart into being a wonderful mother and grandmother.  She brings our family so much joy and is the source of so many of our best memories.  She has also guided our family forward through the most difficult times, always finding the strength to hold us together.  Every day, she shares her heart with the students she teaches full time and so many others who find inspiration in her leadership, kindness, and wisdom.

Across the country, mothers are raising their children, caring for their families, and making history.  Mothers are leaders in every field — from Main Street to Wall Street, they are driving innovation and strengthening our economy.  They are the health care heroes, service members, and public servants, who sacrifice so much for all of us.  They are the artists, journalists, engineers, and scientists creating new possibilities.  They serve at the highest levels of my Administration, working hard to open the doors of opportunity wider for the next generation.

Moms do so much for all of us, and my Administration has their backs.  During the pandemic, I signed the American Rescue Plan, which helped keep the doors open for 225,000 child care providers so families could go to work while their children were cared for.  At the same time, we expanded the Child Tax Credit, giving moms and families some breathing room — which helped slash child poverty rates in half during my first year in office.  My Administration is also making sure that the good-paying jobs from our once-in-a-generation investments in infrastructure and clean energy go to women, who have been underrepresented in these sectors for too long.  I also signed legislation to ensure employers make reasonable accommodations for pregnant and nursing mothers, who deserve to have job security and common-sense workplace protections — such as breaks to drink water, eat, rest, or use the restroom.  These protections help ensure that pregnant workers and new moms do not have to choose between their job and their health.

My Administration is working to make sure that mothers have access to the health care they need.  With the leadership of Vice President Kamala Harris, we released a Blueprint for Addressing the Maternal Health Crisis, which outlines actions the Federal Government will take to combat maternal mortality and improve maternal health.  Further, the American Rescue Plan also gave States the option to provide a full year of postpartum coverage to women on Medicaid, increasing it from just 60 days previously.  Now, 46 States, Washington, D.C., and the United States Virgin Islands provide a full year of this critical care.

This Mother’s Day, may we all show gratitude to our mothers, who are our rocks, believing in us so that we may believe in ourselves.  May we pray for those who have lost their mothers and miss their comfort each day and for the mothers who have lost a child — a piece of their soul.  May we wholeheartedly support the countless mothers across the country who work tirelessly to make the American Dream real for their children and families.

The Congress, by joint resolution approved May 8, 1914 (38 Stat. 770), has designated the second Sunday in May each year as “Mother’s Day” and requested the President to call for its appropriate observance.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR., President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim May 12, 2024, as Mother’s Day.  I urge all Americans to express their love, respect, and gratitude to mothers everywhere.  I call upon all citizens to observe this day with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this tenth day of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty-four, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-eighth.                                    JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR.

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

  • Atlant @ Ufa, Friday Apr 8 (3:00 PM CET/10:00 PM EST)
  • Atlant @ Ufa, Sunday Apr 10 (1:00 PM CET/8:00 AM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Tuesday Apr 12 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Thursday Apr 14 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)

Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.
