Exploring the Jungle River Cruise at Hong Kong Disneyland

I’m a big fan of the Jungle Cruise, and no less here than at Hong Kong Disneyland. This is the most unique Jungle Cruise among Disneyland, Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World, and Tokyo Disneyland. I talk about it in an accompanying post to this one at DisneyatWork.com and in our podcast which can be can be found  here on Podbean  and  here at iTunes .

hk disneyland jungle river cruise

What sets it off differently from the start is that it’s not heading off down some narrow river, but rather a wide river typical of what Rivers of America looks like in other parks. Here, as it sails away, it passes by Tarzan’s Treehouse, where guests board river rafts to explore this jungle home.

hk disneyland jungle river cruise

Further on, the river narrows, and this is where the Jungle River cruise looks more familiar to most fans of this attraction.

hk disneyland jungle river cruise

Many of the same elements stand out, such as menacing hippos, an African savannah, and a lost group of explorers up a tree.

hk disneyland jungle river cruise

But what makes this tour unique is that here in Hong Kong you can create a jungle that really feels like a jungle. There isn’t a greener, more lush version of Adventureland than you find at Hong Kong Disneyland. It really does feel like you’re in a very tropical place–partly supported by the oppressive heat and humidity that one finds much of the year.

hk disneyland jungle river cruise

Further beyond, you meet up with the natives. But rather than the traditional surprise attack, these individuals are blowing arrows toward you from behind their shields. The effect is similar to what you experience in the Indiana Jones Adventure. But it’s more impressive here because of the distances involved.

hk disneyland jungle river cruise

Those elements combined set this river cruise apart from the others. But what they do as a finale is really quite over the top. The boat seems to be heading toward the port, when a large gusher erupts in the middle of the river diverting the boat over to a narrow lane of rocks and caves.

hk disneyland jungle river cruise

From here the boat is blasted at with water, steam and fire. It’s a very cool ending most guests are not expecting. It’s something you don’t want to miss, especially at night.

hk disneyland jungle river cruise

Soon you are returning to the dock and going back on shore. Then it’s off to other attractions to include the new Moana: A Homecoming Celebration and a very unique version of Festival of the Lion King .

In creating a video of the Jungle River Cruise, I ended up on the attraction twice in one morning. That video is below, and you’ll want to check it out. But I also had a chance to observe the queuing system for the attraction, and I’ve written about my experience at DisneyatWork.com. Definitely check out this article, which I have titled, “ The Hardest Working Cast Member at Disney .” It offers some thoughts about individuals whose job it is to keep repeating the same experience again and again and again. Check it out!

Guide to Disney’s Jungle Cruise Attraction

in Disneyland Resort , Tokyo Disneyland , Walt Disney World

Jungle Cruise Attractions

Being inside a Disney theme park can truly transport you to a world of magic and endless possibilities. Whether you are flying on one of Aladdin’s magic carpets, or traveling to the planet of Batuu and battling Kylo Ren , there are just so many places to go. However, maybe you don’t want to fly on a carpet or travel to another planet. Maybe you want to go on a river journey that takes you to a variety of amazing places.

Jungle Cruise

If so, Disney has you covered there too! Disney’s world-famous Jungle Cruise will take Guests from the Amazon to the Nile and more. Here is everything you need to know about Disney’s Jungle Cruise attraction!

What is the Jungle Cruise?

Disney’s Jungle Cruise ride takes Guests on a “10,000-mile” river journey, complete with angry hippos, elephants, and the eighth wonder of the world — the backside of water! Skippers who are full of punny quips and dad jokes will guide you along your tour of some of the world’s most beautiful locations.

Jungle Cruise

Here is more information on the fun attraction from the Walt Disney World website :

Embark on a river cruise where dangerous beasts and dry wit abound. Board a canopied tramp steamer piloted by your trusty skipper, who will expertly navigate you through some of the world’s most treacherous waters. Steam past lush foliage, butterflies and waterfalls on the Amazon in South America. Glimpse an abandoned camp overrun by curious gorillas on the shores of the African Congo.  Along the Nile, watch for bathing elephants, angry hippos and hungry lions. Your cruise continues down the Mekong River in Asia, home to baboons, cobras and other fearsomely life-like creatures.  It’s a 10-minute, 10,000-mile journey that you won’t soon forget!

Different Versions of the Jungle Cruise

While Walt Disney World, Disneyland Resort, Tokyo Disneyland, and Hong Kong Disneyland all have the Jungle Cruise ride, they are not all the same. Disney loves to make each experience its very own, and that is no different when it comes to its famous attractions. However, each attraction does last about 10 minutes.

For example, at Magic Kingdom Park at Disney World, Guests on the Jungle Cruise enter a large temple, where danger could be lurking around any corner. However, that temple cannot be found at the Jungle Cruise at Disneyland .

Disneyland Jungle Cruise

Below is each different Jungle Cruise ride experience you can have at Disneyland, Tokyo Disneyland, and Hong Kong Disneyland (the Magic Kingdom description is written above).

Disneyland Resort

Board a canopied tramp steamer and leave civilization behind on a tongue-in-cheek journey through the globe’s most “treacherous” rivers—and oldest gags. Highlights of your unforgettable adventure include: Ancient Cambodian Shrine Come face-to-face with leaping tigers, lethal cobras and snapping crocodiles. Jungle Cruise Safari Camp Cruise past a former camp overrun by explosively curious gorillas. Indian Elephant Bathing Pool Venture into this sacred pool where you’ll see bathing Indian elephants. Feel free to take pictures—they have their trunks on. The African Veldt Behold angry hippos and hungry lions guarding a sleeping zebra. Schweitzer Falls Be awed as you take in a true natural wonder—the back side of water! Throughout your voyage, you’ll enjoy lively narration from your brave and trusty skipper. It’s a sometimes perilous, always hilarious 10,000-mile journey you won’t soon forget!

Hong Kong Disneyland

Cast off on a thrilling expedition where elephants, gorillas, hippos and maybe even a headhunter await your arrival.  Trek to a dusty tropical jungle outpost—laden with hanging cargo nets, wooden crates, timber canoes and rusty anchors—and board a weathered tramp steamer for an exciting adventure along a remote tropical river. Led by your trusty skipper, leave civilization behind as you navigate through treacherous waters rarely seen by man.  A True-Life Adventure Encounter awesome wonders and startling surprises along the river route. Highlights of your unforgettable 8-minute journey include:  A pool of playful elephants King cobras and giant spiders Mischievous gorillas ransacking a camp Wading hippos An encounter with headhunters The legendary Canyon of the Gods Throughout your amazing voyage, take in lively narration from your friendly skipper, known for a brave heart and a clever joke… or two. Native Languages Upon entering the covered boathouse dock at the front of the attraction, choose one of 3 queues indicating the language spoken by your skipper—Cantonese, Putonghua or English. Please note, all lines advance at approximately the same rate.

Hong Kong Jungle Cruise

Tokyo Disney

Board a boat with a brave, light-hearted skipper who loves the jungle. You’ll see elephants, crocodiles, lions and other wildlife on this adventure tour where surprises and mysteries await you. There’s also a nighttime cruise that takes you through the jungles wrapped in an even more mystic and thrilling atmosphere.

Where Can You Find Disney’s Jungle Cruise Attraction?

Walt disney world resort.

At the Walt Disney World Resort, the Jungle Cruise attraction is found in the Adventureland area of the theme park . Adventureland is on the left side of the Magic Kingdom theme park and is the first land on the left that Guests will encounter as they walk down Main Street U.S.A.

Jungle Cruise

Guests walking into Adventureland will find Jungle Cruise next to Pirates of the Caribbean and across from The Magic Carpets of Aladdin and Walt Disney ‘s Enchanted Tiki Room.

Just as with Walt Disney World , Disneyland’s Jungle Cruise can also be found in the Adventureland area of the theme park . Disneyland’s Jungle Cruise is located between the Tropical Hideaway and next to another popular Adventureland attraction , Indiana Jones Adventure.

Tokyo Disney Resort

Also located in Adventureland, Tokyo Disney’s Jungle Cruise Wildlife Expeditions attraction can be found next to Thunder Mountain Railroad, which is technically located in Westernland. Unlike other Disney theme parks, Adventureland is very small and is mainly taken up by the Jungle Cruise.

Tokyo Disney Jungle Cruise

At Hong Kong Disney, the Jungle Cruise is not simply known as the Jungle Cruise — it is called Jungle River Cruise. At Hong Kong Disneyland , the Jungle River Cruise is located next to Liki Tikis and on the same river as Tarzan’s Treehouse, which is located on its own island.

Hong Kong Jungle Cruise

Ride Vehicles on the Disney Jungle Cruise

Since the Jungle Cruise takes Guests on a 10,000-mile river journey, the only way to travel is by Jungle Cruise boat. Guests will board the Jungle Cruise boats — which all have their own fun names — and it on benches along the sides of the boat. There is also a bench for seating in the middle of the boat as well. Each boat can hold around 32 Guests.

Jungle Cruise Boat

Jungle Cruise boats are handicapped accessible and Guests who are traveling in wheelchairs or electric scooters may remain in their wheelchair and scooter as they enjoy the attraction.

Guests with hearing impairments can also receive assistive listening devices or even a sign language interpreter upon request.

Reimagining a Classic

The Jungle Cruise at Disneyland has been around since the theme park opened in July of 1955. At Walt Disney World, the Magic Kingdom opened in 1971 and received the Jungle Cruise attraction in 1983. Things have changed a lot in the 50 and almost 40 years, respectively, including people’s attitudes and sensitivities towards other cultures.

jungle cruise

Both Disneyland and Disney World Jungle Cruises had the character of Trader Sam, as well as a native welcoming tribe. Over the years, many have deemed the scenes and Trader Sam to be culturally insensitive. Disney has reimagined both attractions and is, as Disney says :

“building on the story of the Jungle Cruise at both Disneyland park at Disneyland Resort and Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort to include new adventures that stay true to the experience we know and love – more humor, wildlife and skipper heart – and also reflect and value the diversity of the world around us.”

Fun Facts About Disney’s Jungle Cruise

It recently became a blockbuster movie.

The Jungle Cruise has been a must-ride attraction since it opened at all four Disney theme parks. It is so popular that on July 24, 2021,  Jungle Cruise   starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt sailed into theaters. Fans of the  Pirates of the Caribbean  franchise will love all of the action and adventure of the Jungle Cruise movie, while fans of the ride will love the puns that absolutely could not be left out.

Hong Kong’s Version Has Fire

Each version of the Jungle Cruise attraction has its own spin, and Hong Kong is no different. Guests riding Hong Kong’s Jungle Cruise will find themselves right in the center of a battle between a fire God and a water God and water and fire will shoot up around them. Who will win? You’ll need to ride to find out!

Walt Disney Originally Wanted Live Animals

While building Disneyland in Anaheim, California, Walt Disney wanted to keep things as authentic as possible. For the Jungle Cruise, this meant bringing in real live animals. Eventually, Walt and his Imagineers discovered that such a plan was just not feasible, so they improvised and built the animals that you can see along the Jungle Cruise today.

Walt Disney Jungle Cruise

Some Versions Receive a Christmas-themed Overlay

Disney loves to go all-out for the holiday season, and sometimes the rides can get in on the fun. Jungle Cruise at both Disneyland and Disney World have been themed into the Jingle Cruise for Christmas. However, the overlay isn’t always guaranteed, so Guests visiting the Resorts during the holidays should continuously check both Disneyland and Walt Disney World websites to see if Jungle Cruise will become the Jingle Cruise that year.

Jingle Cruise

It Has a Great Connection to  Tarzan

Disney loves to connect films and attractions through Easter eggs, although they are sometimes more obvious than that. Guests riding the Jungle Cruise will be able to see the incredible Schweitzer Falls — which is named after Dr. Albert Falls. In reality, Dr. Albert Schweitzer was a real humanitarian who traveled deep into the jungles of Africa to help the indigenous peoples there.

Archimedes Porter

Dr. Albert Schweitzer was also the inspiration for Dr. Archimedes Q. Porter, Jane Porter’s father in the 1999 film Tarzan.

Some Pretty Famous People Have Been Skippers

Disney has been known to employ some famous actors and actresses before they become the stars we know today. Steve Martin, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Wayne Brady all call themselves former Cast Members. There are also some A-List celebs who call themselves a former Jungle Cruise skipper — including Robin Williams and Kevin Costner.

robin williams with butterfly

There is so much to see once you board the attraction, each Guest may have their own favorite aspect. Maybe you love seeing all of the elephants — don’t worry, they all have their trunks on. Perhaps you like the skippers pointing out all of the wildlife, and maybe giving them a name or two. Whatever you love about the Jungle Cruise, there is always something to love about the world-famous Jungle Cruise!

The Ultimate Hong Kong Disneyland Guide (2024): Secrets, Tips & Must-Dos

hk disneyland jungle river cruise

The hoi-sumest place on earth to let it go! ❄️

First published: 7 Jan 2019

Disneyland - Hong Kong Disneyland Guide

When I first visited Hong Kong Disneyland a decade ago, I was underwhelmed. It seemed like a watered-down, almost pirated version of Disney magic. So when the park became part of our 7D Hong Kong trip , my reaction was a solid “meh”.

But now, the attractions are nothing short of world-class, and you can’t help feeling that sense of wonder. I say this as a full-grown adult, so you know it must be true! And the good news is they just keep building bigger and better attractions.

Arendelle - Hong Kong Disneyland Frozen

Case in point: the long-awaited World of Frozen just opened back in November 2023! The kingdom of Arendelle is ready to explore with familiar sights from the movie like the ice palace, the clock tower, and the friendship fountain.

Not to mention, Hong Kong Disneyland also unveiled its Castle of Magic Dreams in 2020, featuring 14 Disney princesses!

You’ll also find attractions not found in any other Disneyland, like the first-ever Marvel ride  (on top of a Marvel land in the works ) and a unique spin on the Haunted Mansion .

Changes in operations

Before visiting: – All guests must reserve a slot for their visit on the Hong Kong Disneyland website prior to arrival, up to 90 days in advance. This includes tickets purchased via Klook . – Check here for the updated list of attractions and shows for each day. – Download the Hong Kong Disneyland mobile app to check attraction wait times.

Stickers: Cast members no longer give out free stickers post-Covid 🙁

Pre-visit tips

1) avoid visiting during peak periods.

To avoid crowds, steer clear of weekends,  school holidays and China’s Golden Week holidays . It’s also best to visit during the cooler months of October to April (bonus: this period includes Halloween and Christmas decor and festivities).

2) Pre-book tickets to save money and skip the queue

Save 8% by booking through Klook . A one-day pass can go from  ~S$100 , compared to the HK$639 ( ~S$108 ) price tag on the official site . We also skipped the long lines at the entrance, and simply flashed our in-app voucher to go in!

Tickets are also available with the Klook Pass Hong Kong . So if your itinerary covers multiple Hong Kong attractions, this option could save you up to 26% overall.

3) Download the Hong Kong Disneyland app

It may be a small park, but these legs were made for riding coasters, not walking aimlessly! With the free  Hong Kong Disneyland mobile app , we checked attraction wait times and showtime schedules and got there fast with the GPS-enabled park map.

Difference between Hong Kong Disneyland Tickets (2024)

There are many ticket options for Hong Kong Disneyland via Klook with the World of Frozen opening up, so here are a few pointers to help you decide.

Priority access to rides can also be pre-booked via Klook. We go through it more in this section !

What do the different tiers mean?

hk disneyland jungle river cruise

Hong Kong Disneyland has recently implemented a tier system for their 1-day tickets. Each day has an assigned “tier” based on how busy it gets. The higher the tier, the more expensive the ticket; Tier 1 is the cheapest, and Tier 4 is the most expensive.

*Pro-tip: Use the 1-Day Ticket Calendar to check which ticket you need to buy based on when you’re visiting.

Example: Only people who bought Tier 3 tickets can go on 29 Mar 2024 — a busy day in the middle of peak season.

If you accidentally buy a higher-tier ticket than intended, you can still use that to visit on a “lower tier” day.

Example: You bought a Tier 4 ticket, but decide to visit the park on a Tier 3 day instead. That’s okay!

Getting to Hong Kong Disneyland

Disney Express - Hong Kong Disneyland Guide

The super-cute Disney Express train.

The cheapest (and most scenic) transport option is the MTR. Take the Tung Chung Line to Sunny Bay Station, transfer to the Disneyland Resort Line and onto the Disney train. It’s hard to miss, with adorable Disney-themed handles and memorabilia!

If you’re coming from the airport, it’s a 20-minute taxi ride which costs ~HK$180 (~S$31).

Secrets & tips for Hong Kong Disneyland

1) [new] use disney premier access for the popular attractions.

visitors purchasing the Disney Premier Access - Hong Kong Disneyland Guide

Hong Kong Disneyland sadly no longer uses the free FASTPASS system — you’ll now have to purchase Disney Premier Access ( available via Klook add-on ) to skip the queues instead.

It pretty much works the same, where you’ll have to scan your Disney Premier Access QR code at each attraction to enjoy priority access.

You can purchase either Disney Premier Access for a single attraction, or a bundle of three or eight attractions. Take note that each pass provides priority access to different rides.

Purchase the Disney Premier Access passes online beforehand via Klook add-on , on the Hong Kong Disneyland mobile app , or on-site at the Main Entrance Ticket Booth, Guest Relations (City Hall, Main Street USA),  Pooh Corner (Fantasyland), Expo Shop (Tomorrowland), Archive Shop (Mystic Point) or Andy’s Toy Box (Toy Story Land).

*Note: The Disney Premier Access does not include admission to Hong Kong Disneyland Park. You’ll have to purchase it separately! For convenience, you can purchase this as an add-on in Klook in addition to your admission ticket.

2) If queues are long, pick single-rider options

Toy Story Shop - Hong Kong Disneyland Guide

Opt for the Single Rider option where available — this cut our waiting time for  Toy Soldier Parachute Drop   from 40 minutes to just 5!

3) Trade pins with cast members

Pin Trading Disney- Hong Kong Disneyland Guide

Pin trading is a huge (albeit relatively unknown) tradition at Disneyland, and Hong Kong is no exception. Choose a pin from the shop (from HK$75 – HK$105), and trade with cast members around the park.

4) Collect badges for special occasions

Badges - Hong Kong Disneyland Guide

If it’s your birthday or first time at Disney, head to Guest Relations (located within City Hall on Main Street) and collect a celebratory badge. You never know what surprises await when you put it on!

5) Watch out for picture spots

Photo Point - Hong Kong Disneyland Guide

These often-missed signposts show you how to position yourself for the best photos!

Suggested routes

Both of these itineraries include must-dos, but the Magic Route prioritises shows and scenic attractions while the Mayhem Route  suits thrill-seekers.

Do note that Main Street opens at official opening time, while other lands and attractions open 30 minutes later.

Also, an hour before park closing, attractions in all lands except Fantasyland and Tomorrowland close. We recommend spending 30 minutes walking through the park to see the lights, then camping out at Main Street for the night parade.

*Note: Rides that are eligible for Disney Premier Access bundles are marked with an asterisk (**).

This was a Pirates of the Caribbean themed overlay done for the, "Pirate Takeover" event. • The Umbala are portrayed as using blowguns. In real-life, blowguns are not known to be traditionally used by any Indigenous Africana tribe but are more likely taken from Jivaroan cultures .

8 Stunning Hong Kong Disneyland Attractions You Have to Experience

Hong Kong Disneyland Attractions

Disneyland Hong Kong attractions feature the Jungle River Cruise, Mystic Manor, Fairy Tale Forest, Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars, iconic churros, and Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters. A blend of Disney magic with Hong Kong uniqueness.

All the Disneyland Hong Kong attractions were officially built in 2005 and was derided as the smallest of the Disney “castle” parks.

TIP: Don’t miss the Momentous Nighttime Spectacular at the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort

8 Hong Kong Disneyland Attractions

1. experience the jungle cruise in mandarin or cantonese:.

Hong Kong Disneyland’s Jungle River Cruise is a bit unique in the Disney canon.

First, the waterways for the attraction are wider and less intimate than other Hong Kong Disneyland attractions.

Guests cruise around an island upon which Tarzan’s Treehouse resides accessible only by raft (a la Tom Sawyer’s Island) and other lands and attractions are visible while aboard the Jungle Cruise.

Hong Kong Disneyland attractions version adds some pep with some water and fire effects.

For those of you who enjoy visiting Disney parks (you know who you are!), Jungle Cruise is known for the captain’s witty banter and it just plain falls flat when delivered in English at Hong Kong Disneyland.

We tried several times, and though fluent, they Jungle River Cruise captains couldn’t compete with their stateside (or Tokyo-based) counterparts.

At Hong Kong Disneyland , this version of the venerable attraction allows guests in line up in one of three queues: English, Mandarin or Cantonese.

The latter two versions are delivered with considerable more enthusiasm and the skippers often try to accommodate their English-speaking passengers with some Chinese/English variations.

This makes the trip far more interesting and an extremely unique experience at Hong Kong Disneyland!

hk disneyland jungle river cruise

2. Ride Mystic Manor

Mystic Manor is the first-and-only-of-its-kind Hong Kong Disneyland attractions answer to the Haunted Mansion (Phantom Manor to those of you in Paris!).

This wonderful ride combines show elements from Tokyo DisneySea’s Tower of Terror with the state-of-the-art trackless ride technology of Tokyo Disneyland’s Pooh’s Hunny Hunt to wow guests with show elements, technology and a story that is Disney at its best!

hk disneyland jungle river cruise

3. Explore every Diorama in the Fairy Tale Forest:

Fairy Tale Forest is the unsung hero out of all of the Hong Kong Disneyland attractions in Fantasyland.

This quaint and unobtrusive garden-like setting is home to charming self-triggered dioramas and effects in a selfie-haven for Disney stories.

Guests are encouraged to engage, watch, pose, snap and enjoy numerous Disney Classics including Tangled , Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs , Beauty and the Beast , Cinderella and The Little Mermaid as they make their way through the Fairy Tale Forest.

Fairies are said to inhabit this enchanted forest and a meet and greet with Tinker Bell is an option for those who are interested.

hk disneyland jungle river cruise

4. Scream Aboard the Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars:

SPOILER ALERT: Do not research this ride. Don’t read the description on the Hong Kong Disneyland website or on a park map.

Do yourself a favor and board this attraction and just treat yourself to one of the best Disney surprises since the giant boulder at Disneyland’s Indiana Jones Adventure almost crushed you and eleven of your closest friends.

This is a sure underdog out of all of Hong Kong Disneyland attractions .

Just ride it!

hk disneyland jungle river cruise

5. Enjoy Some Disneyland Comfort Food:

Part of the fun of discovering Hong Kong Disneyland is trying new foods…and there are many!

From strawberry popcorn to Korean squid (you can smell it coming and going and the Nerd is not a fan), there is no shortage of snacks, beverages, desserts and meals to try.

But sometimes, when you are far far away from home, it’s nice to bite into something familiar.

Enter the Hong Kong Disneyland churro (mmmmm…tastes even better than the ones at home) and the Mickey Ice Cream Bar… always a solid choice for a sweet tooth!

Want the perfect blend of new and familiar?

Pop by Jessie’s Snack Roundup for a churro and soft serve…and a little taste of home.

hk disneyland jungle river cruise

Nerd Alert: Order your churro from the BB-8 Snack Cart in Tomorrowland. Watch as the Cast Member grits his teeth in embarrassment and really delivers the line with all the acting chops of a Star Wars extra as he hands you a churro and says (in slightly broken English), “May the Force be with you.”

You cannot bottle this kind of Disney magic.

6. Eat Breakfast on Main Street Before the Park Opens:

Main Street, U.S.A. generally opens at Hong Kong Disneyland 30 minutes before official opening time.

Not only can you position yourself to be ready for the “rope drop” as the park opens, it will give you time to peruse the shops and grab a waffle (or hot dog or corn on the cob) for breakfast while you explore!

The stunning part?

In the off-season, Main Street U.S.A. is serene this time of day despite the fact that the park opens after 10am and, jet-lagged, you have probably been awake for 6+ hours.

hk disneyland jungle river cruise

7. Max Out Your Score on Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters

Is it the air?

Do you have magical powers in Hong Kong?

Is it a hallucination caused by jet-lag?

Whatever the reason, it’s decidedly easier to score big points on Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters at Hong Kong Disneyland than its California and Florida counterparts.

This, coupled with an off-season wait that never seems to exceed the Disney minimum posting of 5 minutes, makes Buzz a prime target to achieve a score that is out of this world… thank you Hong Kong Disneyland !

TIP: Always aim for any target outlined in a neon light! If none are available, aim exclusively for the diamond and triangle targets for the biggest points!

hk disneyland jungle river cruise

8. Be There or Be Square for the “Rope Drop”

If you have traveled to Disneyland in Anaheim and the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World in Florida, then you know how critical it is to be at the park, geared up and in the “starter’s position” at opening time (AKA “rope drop”).

The bloodshot eyes of those around you, the parents nursing their Starbucks and feeding granola bars on the go to their young is a mainstay of any Disney park visit.

Here’s the best news about Hong Kong Disneyland… during slower times of the year, the park does not open until 10am or 10:30am and the crowds present at rope drop are practically non-existent.

Even after more than a decade, Hongkongers do not rush the gates of their Disneyland like the locals do in the rest of the world.

So those who stroll through the gates around 10:15am, grab a waffle (or hot dog or corn on the cob) at a food cart along Main Street, peruse the shops and cozy up to the rope with 75 of your closest friends for the official opening time will relish this wonderful cultural difference… only wondering how many years until it disappears!

Jungle Cruise at Disney World: An Unforgettable Adventure Awaits

Jungle River Cruise

The Jungle River Cruise is an attraction located in Adventureland of Hong Kong Disneyland in Hong Kong, China.

The shape of Hong Kong Disneyland's route is significantly different compared to the others and circumnavigates Tarzan's Treehouse. A grand finale is included with a battle between angry fire and water gods. Three languages are regularly available: Cantonese, English, and Mandarin. Each language has a separate queue, allowing visitors to experience the journey in their preferred language.

Attraction Summary [ ]

The queue takes place in a small boathouse less elaborate than the boathouses found at the other parks. After winding through the queue, guests board one of the boats and meet their skipper who speaks either English, Cantonese, or Mandarin, to accompany the park's guests who speak many different languages themselves.

The boats then depart and head down the river, past Tarzan's Treehouse where the skipper tells guests to wave goodbye to the guests traversing the treehouse, for they will never see them again. The boats then drove past a mother Indian elephant and her calf playing in the water, followed by another elephant showering in a waterfall. A large bull Indian elephant emerges from the water squirting a plume of water at the boats with the guests narrowly avoiding the free shower.

The vessels then drift down a narrow stream past ancient Cambodian ruins which have been claimed by the jungle. Giant spiders and king cobras watch the boats as they move on. Up ahead several crocodiles are seen resting on a small beach, while a school of hungry piranha is jumping in the hopes of attacking the guests. The boats escape into Africa and they pass a large safari camp where several curious gorillas have discovered clothes, guns, hammocks, and books, as the "Trashing the Camp" song from Tarzan plays on a nearby 1930s radio. The African Veldt comes into view where antelope, giraffes, zebras, and African elephants stare at the boats. The vessels then drift into a small pool where a pod of hippos tries to tip the boat. Several feet ahead a rhino is seen chasing a safari group up a tree while several hyenas look on laughing.

Skulls and cloth impaled on broken bamboo sticks appear as tribal drums and horns fill the air. The skipper tells guests that they have entered headhunter country and must quietly sneak by. The boats slowly pass through the main village where several upright shields rest in the tall grass. Native notices the boats and all the shields now revealed to have headhunters behind them begin firing spears and poison darts at the boats as they narrowly escape into a rocky canyon. In the rocky canyon, the boats stop near two unusual rock formations that look like faces, revealed by the skipper to be the fire god and the water god who constantly feud over their differences. The fire god sets the river ablaze while the water god vomits a water bomb, causing the flames to die and the whole canyon to become a cloud of steam. The boats escape the canyon and pass a baby elephant before returning to the boathouse.

Say good-bye to civilization and come into Adventureland, a jungle-themed area of wild animals, savage headhunters, rain forests and magical totems. A lush island awash with dense vegetation and wilderness is at the center, with Tarzan's Treehouse as its main feature. The Jungle River Cruise adventure circles the island bringing eager safari explorers on a fun and exciting journey.

The jungle river cruise.

The Jungle River Cruise is one of the coolest rides in the park. Your safari guide takes you on a river adventure through the jungles of the world, from the Amazonas to the Okavango and the Mekong delta... Keep an eye out for the big five... and watch out for cannibals and headhunters!

Weather conditions are treacherous, so be prepared for some showers... and as you cruise by the Sacred Temples, pay attention that the Fire and Water Gods are not acting up again, if they are, you might get caught in the middle of either a tsunami, a blazing river of fire, or both...

Safari guides are provided for English, Mandarin and Cantonese explorers, and there will be separate lines for each language.

Tarzan's Treehouse

To get to Tarzan's Treehouse you have to take a raft which will bring you to the island. This attraction is similar to the Family Robinson treehouse, where you climb on foot and there are bridges and small chambers where you recognize little details from the Tarzan movie.

Adventureland Tarzan Treehouse

The view from the top of the tree is spectacular with all the action at the raft docks and the Jungle Cruise boats circling around the island.

Another one of our favourites, this really is a class act, like being in Broadway without spending hundreds of dollars in tickets. The Festival of the Lion King is fantastic, the music, the acrobatics, the costumes, the stage, the choreography, the interaction with the public, it all combines to offer a truly spectacular production.

The play is based in the Lion King movie and tells the story of Simba. It is mainly in English, with little snippets in Cantonese, and subtitles in Chinese are projected on the screens.

15 Secrets of Disney’s Jungle Cruise You Might Not Know

Ever since opening in Disneyland in 1955, the Jungle Cruise has been one of the “boulder attractions” amongst guests who don't take adventure for “granite.” Due to its popularity at the Anaheim location, the ride was introduced to the Magic Kingdom in Orlando and officially opened with the park in October 1971.

Since its inception, this classic adventure has whisked millions of eager explorers away on a journey through dense, exotic landscapes, teeming with animatronic wildlife. Walt himself called the ride “the waterways of our man-made jungle.” The Jungle Cruise boasts an approximately 10-minute boat ride through “10,000 miles” of river wilderness, encompassing the Egyptian Nile, the African Congo, the Amazon in South America, and the Southeast Asian Mekong River.

In this article:

A Peek Behind the Curtain

In this exploration of the Jungle Cruise's hidden wonders, we'll delve into the secrets and behind-the-scenes tricks that bring this jungle to life. This includes the meticulous craftsmanship, the clever storytelling techniques that unfold along the riverbanks, and the artistry behind creating an immersive experience that has stood the test of time.

So come aboard, fellow adventurers, as we navigate these waters and discover the enchanting mysteries that make the Jungle Cruise an enduring favorite among Disney enthusiasts of all ages.

It Was Originally the Only Ride in Adventureland

hk disneyland jungle river cruise

As the gates of Disneyland swung open in 1955, Adventureland made its debut, featuring a lone attraction that stole the show – the Jungle Cruise. Drawing inspiration from Disney's acclaimed True-Life Adventures documentary films and the movie The African Queen , the ride and its surrounding area became a gateway to wild and captivating narratives.

In the early stages, there was a plan to christen the area “True-Life Adventure Land,”  a nod to the documentary series that fueled its creation. However, simplicity prevailed, and the name was gracefully shortened to the now-iconic “Adventureland.”

Above see the current entrance to Adventureland at Walt Disney World!

Real Animals Were Almost Used

hk disneyland jungle river cruise

In the early days of envisioning the Jungle Cruise, Walt Disney himself dreamt of infusing a touch of authenticity by featuring live animals on the attraction. His passion for creating immersive experiences led him to contemplate the idea of incorporating real wildlife to bring the jungle to life. However, practical challenges and safety concerns soon became apparent. Maintaining the well-being of the animals, ensuring their safety and the safety of the visitors, and the unpredictability and inconsistency of live creatures in a controlled environment posed significant hurdles.

In the spirit of innovation, Disney opted for a groundbreaking solution–Audio Animatronics. This decision not only addressed the logistical challenges but also allowed for a level of creative control that would ensure a consistent and magical experience for every guest. By pioneering the use of animatronics in Jungle Cruise, Disney successfully blended imagination with technology, creating a timeless attraction that captures the essence of the wild in a safe and enchanting manner.

The Skippers Don't Drive the Boat

hk disneyland jungle river cruise

While the charismatic skippers of the Jungle Cruise may appear to be masterfully navigating the winding rivers with expert precision, there's a delightful secret beneath the surface–the boats are actually on a track! Yes, the magic of Disney extends even to the waterways of this iconic attraction.

Behind the scenes, the boats are guided along an unseen track beneath the surface, ensuring a seamless and controlled journey through the exotic landscapes. What makes the experience truly enchanting is the skillful touch of the skippers. The skippers excel in making you believe they are steering the ship with ease with perfectly timed spins of the captain's wheel. While they can control the speed of the boat and move it forwards and backward, the track guides the boat along the Jungle Cruise's journey. This way, the skippers can focus on bringing the adventure to life with their wit and “niles and niles” of punny jokes.

There's Something in the Water

hk disneyland jungle river cruise

Have you ever wondered why the water on the Jungle Cruise river has such a murky appearance? Personally, I have. Come to find out, it's not a natural muckiness! In fact, it's Imagineers employing a clever technique!

The Imagineers introduced a water-soluble dye, tinted in green-brown hues, to give the water an authentic jungle aesthetic. Located behind the “Eighth Wonder of the World” a large pump disperses the dye into the water.

Beyond its visual impact, this dye serves a crucial purpose—it conceals the boat tracks and wiring essential for the animatronics. It also helps give the illusion that the water is much deeper, like it would be in the wild. In reality, the water is only about 4 feet deep in most areas. This thoughtful technique ensures that guests remain fully immersed in the jungle ambiance.

Sensors Help the Skippers

hk disneyland jungle river cruise

“Does anyone know what kind of snake that is? Begins with P… not Python – good guess though! Plastic!” – Anonymous Skipper

Personally, I was always curious how the skippers had such impeccable timing with their jokes hitting at the exact right moment with an animatronic. If you’ve ever wondered about this too, wonder no more–it's no mere coincidence!

According to DisneyFanatic.com and TPM Vids , there are sensors in The Jungle Cruise that trigger a specific effect to go off when the boat passes. This clever technological integration allows skippers to synchronize their narration and punch lines perfectly. Harnessing the ability to control the boat's speed, skippers ensure that their witty commentary aligns precisely with the sensor signals preceding each animatronic encounter.

An Animator Added the Fun

hk disneyland jungle river cruise

“It’s okay to take pictures folks, they all have their trunks on.” – Anonymous Skipper

When The Jungle Cruise initially debuted in 1955, it embraced a more educational tone reminiscent of the documentaries that inspired its creation. However, by the early 1960s, Walt Disney envisioned injecting additional drama and humor into the ride to enhance the overall experience. To bring this vision to life, he enlisted the talents of animator Marc Davis, one of Disney's esteemed “Nine Old Men.”

Starting his journey with Disney in 1935 as an animator for “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” Davis became a crucial collaborator on various iconic rides, including Haunted Mansion, Jungle Cruise, it's a small world, and Pirates of the Caribbean. Walt Disney's request for humorous sketches from Davis marked the beginning of transforming the once-serious wilderness into a “wise-cracking” adventure. Among Davis' notable contributions is the creation of the Elephant Pool scene, leaving a lasting mark on the Jungle Cruise's whimsical evolution.

Too Good for Backstage

hk disneyland jungle river cruise

In addition to his work on the Jungle Cruise, Marc Davis was enlisted to create entertaining scenes adorning the outskirts of various lands visible from the train, serving as lively advertisements for the attractions within. According to a Marc Davis conversation with Disney Archaeologist Scott Wolf detailed in a Keeping the Magic Alive YouTube video and The Kingdom Insider article , the “Trapped Safari” scene was initially designed as a promotional visual. However, Walt Disney, captivated by Davis' ingenuity, declared that it had to be in the ride.

Fast forward to today, and the once-promotional sketch has evolved into a cherished fan-favorite scene on the attraction. Notably, it has become the “butt-of-the-joke” for many of the skippers' witty punch lines.

Easter Eggs Laid by The Rock

hk disneyland jungle river cruise

In July 2021, Walt Disney Pictures unveiled the highly anticipated summer blockbuster “Jungle Cruise,” featuring the dynamic duo of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Emily Blunt. While the Jungle Cruise attraction predates the movie, the film drew inspiration from the iconic Disneyland ride. Disneyland's queue, in a stroke of cinematic magic, received some delightful Easter Eggs courtesy of the movie.

Notably, across from Dr. Kon Chunosuke’s insect collection, visitors will discover the map from the film—a map that Dr. Lily (Emily Blunt) reveals to Skipper Frank (Dwayne Johnson), leading them on a quest to find an ancient, powerful healing tree poised to revolutionize medicine.

The Disneyland queue holds additional hidden gems from the movie. Dr. Lily and Skipper Frank's attire is suspended behind Alberta Falls’ office door in the Jungle Cruise boathouse. Frank's coat also adorns Alberta's office, discreetly placed behind a wicker hutch. Further intrigue awaits in the Safari Supply Storage Room, where a Conquistador's helmet serves as another nod to the film's adventurous narrative.

Recent Changes to the Jungle Cruise Attraction

hk disneyland jungle river cruise

Returning visitors to Disneyland and Magic Kingdom will notice a change in the Jungle Cruise attraction, as the character known as the “Head Salesman” Trader Sam is no longer present in person. Following a 2021 refurbishment at both parks, which aimed to address concerns about cultural sensitivity, several scenes underwent renovations to ensure they were more respectful to Indigenous people.

In response to criticisms regarding the representation of Indigenous people on the ride, Disney Parks took action in January 2021. The refurbishments were designed to “reflect and value the diversity of the world around us.”

As part of these changes, scenes featuring a war party with spears, native dancers, and Trader Sam selling shrunken heads have been completely removed from the attraction. However, Trader Sam is still part of the ride in a different capacity, as guests can now encounter him within the new “Gift Shop,” where he sells explorers' lost items.

Special Holiday Overlays

hk disneyland jungle river cruise

During the merriest season of the year, both Disneyland and Disney World once joined in the festive transformation of The Jungle Cruise, giving rise to the enchanting “Jingle Cruise” holiday overlay. While Disneyland stopped doing this festive overlay in 2017, Disney World still partakes in the merriment every year.

From early November through approximately the first week in January, the classic attraction dons holiday decor, ushering guests into a yuletide wonderland.  This joyous holiday makeover, accessible to all park visitors and not exclusive to Christmas event party-goers, brings a delightful twist to the Jungle Cruise experience. The animatronics and scenes get a festive facelift with whimsical decorations, and even the jokes take on a special holiday flair. It's a seasonal spectacle that infuses an extra dose of magic into the already boisterous attraction, making the Jingle Cruise a must-see holiday treat for all park-goers.

Hungry for More Fun Facts?

hk disneyland jungle river cruise

Our cruise can't come to an end just yet! Here are some additional fun facts about the Jungle Cruise ride:

  • Disneyland's Jungle Cruise queue is two stories tall, while Disney World's queue is only one story.
  • In Walt Disney World, the legend is the plane that crashed on the Jungle Cruise is actually the back half of the plane from the Casablanca scene on the former Great Movie Ride attraction in Hollywood Studios.
  • The Disney World attraction includes a temple tunnel scene and Disneyland's does not.
  • Schweitzer Falls was actually named after Dr. Albert Schweitzer, a famous doctor, humanitarian, and Nobel Prize winner.
  • Both Disney World and Disneyland locations have Schweitzer Falls, a.k.a. the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” and get to see the “backside of water.”

The Jungle Cruise stands as a true Disney masterpiece, demonstrating that even in the heart of the jungle, magic is very much alive! From the clever storytelling and meticulously crafted animatronics to hidden surprises and festive overlays like the Jingle Cruise, each detail adds to the awe of this iconic attraction.

Whether it's your initial voyage or a return to familiar waters, every twist and turn on this jungle adventure brings forth not just high-seas hilarity and puns, but also reflects Disney's dedication to providing enchanting experiences for visitors of all ages. The next time you embark on the Jungle Cruise, take a moment to appreciate the intricate details that make this expedition a timeless journey into the heart of Disney magic, where the wonder is grounded in the artistry and craftsmanship that brings the adventure to life.
