Wednesday Racing Tips: Going for Gold in the Mallow

 | Tuesday 10th September 2024, 18:38pm

Tuesday 10th September 2024, 18:38pm

Flat Horse Racing

It’s a quieter than usual Wednesday of racing with just four cards in Britain and Ireland to focus on as we build up to the St Leger and Irish Champion Stakes later in the week.

We’ve picked out a trio of selections for three handicaps on the Flat either side of the Irish Sea, including a recent Curragh winner who looks ready to score again.

Horse Racing Tips, Wednesday

17.25 Cork - Goldmoyne @ 4/1

19.25 Cork - Polemon @ 7/2

16.50 Lingfield - Berry Clever @ 5/2

Today's Horse Races

There are two divisions of the Mallow Handicap at Cork this year. The second division looks very warm with some horses on a steep upward curve that are hard to assess but the first division at 5.25 looks a bit more straightforward.

The one that may be able to take advantage of the weaker race is recent Curragh winner, Goldmoyne.

This son of Galileo Gold bolted up when making all in a Curragh handicap on his penultimate outing and it was a respectable follow-up bid back at that venue over an insufficient six furlongs last month, doing well to hit the frame.

He gave the impression that he would relish the step back up in trip that he gets here and experienced jockey Ronan Whelan takes over from an inexperienced apprentice rider.

This four-year-old is still pretty unexposed having just his sixth start here and his dam improved as she got older, so there could easily be more to come.

Later on the Cork card, the finale has a couple of nice prospects going for back-to-back wins and one that appeals most is Polemon for Denis Hogan.

This five-year-old was a bit frustrating when trained by Archie Watson in Britain but he hasn’t looked back since switching to Ireland for his new connections, winning two of his first three outings.

The win at Tipperary last time is certainly worth marking up given that he was going away again at the line and this well bred son of Frankel who is a full brother to Weekender could be up to defying a 9lb rise in the weights now that his new trainer appears to have found the key with him.

With the ground in his favour once again with no rain in forecast, he probably deserves to be the outright favourite for this contest.

Silvestre De Sousa rides plenty of winners for Chris Dwyer and he gets back on board Berry Clever, who the Brazilian has twice hit the crossbar on already this season.

The son of Expert Eye has run with credit in two runs since stepping back up to this trip and he met a bit of interference when fifth at Newcastle last time.

It’s probably more a case of when rather than if this three-year-old breaks his maiden tag and there’s a suspicion that Lingfield’s all-weather track will suit given that he has run well around a tight bend at Wetherby previously.

Back a horse by clicking their odds below.

CABURN (2.25 Doncaster, nap)

Can scoop the fantastic £192,000 first prize in this red-hot sales race for up and coming trainer Jack Jones. He has already shown his liking for these big-field contests by seeing off 18 rivals to scoop the Super Sprint at Newbury in July. Dylan Hogan’s mount showed sharp speed to grab that big pot which earned him a crack at the Gimcrack Stakes at York last time out. He more than held his own in that classy contest and was finishing strongly up the Knavesmire. This slightly longer trip should be ideal and he can take another step forward on just his third racecourse run.

PROMETHEAN (4.10 Doncaster, nb)

Can confirm his promise for in-form trainer David Menuisier. This improving three-year-old was beaten in a photo at Newmarket last time when the line came a heartbeat too soon. He was asked to come from a long way back at HQ and hopefully Sean Levey will have him closer to the pace today.

MISTRAL STAR (3.35 Doncaster, nb)

Can live up to her name by taking the Park Hill Stakes. Hughie Morrison’s daughter of Frankel should relish this step up in distance and there’s a lot more to come.

Templegate's tv verdicts.

1.50 ART DESIGN clocked a big personal best when winning at Southwell last time. The winning margin was only a neck but she didn’t hit top gear and has more to come.

She’s good on turf too as she showed with a good third at Newmarket.

Toomuchforme has every chance on this handicap debut after a good third at Newbury last time. She’s got every chance provided there isn’t too much rain.

Dear Cat went from the front when scoring over 7f at Salisbury and that stamina could be an asset as there’s likely to be plenty of pace on again.

Silver Ghost has been knocking on the door and was second again at Newmarket latest. She’s up 3lb for that but has place claims again.

Eartha has been consistent over 5f and could figure if seeing out this longer trip on handicap debut from what looks a fair mark.

CABURN was doing all his best work at the end of the Gimcrack at York last time so this slightly longer trip should be ideal.

Jack Jones’ star came home with a real rattle and showed his liking for these events when winning the Super Sprint at Newbury two runs ago. There should be more to come.

Camille Pissarro was a place behind the tip at York on the back of a smart effort at The Curragh latest.

He has yet to win since his Navan debut but Aidan O’Brien continues in excellent form and he’s the danger.

Intrusively had to drop in class for a first win at Nottingham last time but he looked up to this level when a cracking third in the Richmond Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.

He is best over this trip and is likely to make another bold bid from the front.

An Outlaw’s Grace has cheekpieces on for the first time after a good effort in a hot contest at York latest. He finished strongly and could hit the frame if not getting too far behind.

Hallasan is taking a hike in class after an easy Nottingham maiden win. You would expect him to take a fair step forward for Charlie Appleby and William Buick.

Moving Force has been running well without winning and was just over a length off the pace in a big field at York latest.

DESERT FLOWER has won both starts without breaking sweat and can show why she’s near the head of next year’s 1,000 Guineas betting.

She caught the eye when scooting in on debut at Newmarket over 7f and matched that form back at HQ last time. She shapes as though this mile will bring more improvement.

Ecstatic comes from Ballydoyle after breaking her maiden nicely at Tipperary latest. She is bred to want further than this in time but has plenty of speed and is dangerous under Ryan Moore.

Despite jockey bookings, the other Aidan O’Brien runner January is not without a chance after clocking a decent time when winning at Tipperary.

Anshoda battled right to the line when taking the Group 3 Prestige Stakes at Goodwood last month. That was over 7f but she’s crying out for this trip.

The issue could be the ground as she enjoyed it soft on the Sussex Downs.

Flight didn’t have a lot to beat at Sandown 12 days ago but it was a smooth success and this stronger company should bring improvement.

Elsie’s Ruan was a solid Group 3 third at Newmarket and needs more to figure.

MISTRAL STAR held her own in the Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks last time and should love this extra quarter-mile.

This Frankel filly landed the Listed Aphrodite Stakes at Newmarket easily in July and trainer Hughie Morrison has a good record with stayers. William Buick stays on board and can steer her home.

Night Sparkle is proven over this distance and shaped well when fourth in the Lonsdale Cup at York three weeks ago.

Her last run over this trip saw her narrowly beaten in the Lillie Langtry at Glorious Goodwood which is strong form. She’ll be right there for Favourite columnist Andrew Balding.

Scenic ran her best race of the season when winning a York Listed race over 1m4f 21 days ago. She had the race wrapped up a long way out and finished strongly so should stay.

Grateful was below par in the Lillie Langtry after winning a Fairyhouse Group 3 over this trip in July. Aidan O’Brien stayers are always respected and she should be an each-way price.

PROMETHEAN looks a winner in waiting for in-form David Menuisier. He should be coming here off a victory but the finishing line came a stride too soon at Newmarket last time.

He had too much ground to make up over the mile there and should relish this extra quarter-mile. He looks much better than his handicap mark of 85.

Victorious Street got off the mark on Southwell’s all-weather track last month. He was just getting going over the mile there and is another who will relish this stamina test.

We haven’t seen Harper’s Ferry since his modest run in a Royal Ascot Group 2 where 1m4f looked too far. He’s been gelded and connections clearly believe he’s better than this grade.

T’Challa had a bit in hand when winning over this trip at Newbury latest. He’s up 5lb against stronger rivals but will make a bold bid from the front.

Beechwood produces career best to earn black type at Galway

Beechwood produces career best to earn black type at Galway

Beechwood and Billy Lee win the Oyster Stakes at Galway. Picture: Healy Racing

The Paddy Twomey-trained Beechwood made her stakes-race breakthrough when bolting-up in the listed Ardilaun Hotel Irish EBF Oyster Stakes in Galway.

Having her third run for Twomey and providing Billy Lee with the second leg of a Tuesday double, the 5/1 shot cruised into contention, asserted off the home-turn and forged clear to slam British raider and favourite Rouge Selier, with long-time leader Romzina picking up valuable black type in third.

“We’ve been taking her time with her,” stated Twomey, “We ran her over a mile in Killarney and she produced a career-best, although we were disappointed she got beaten, in Sligo. But she has come forward well.

“I was a bit concerned about her staying the mile and a half today, but there was no problem. Billy got her switched off and you could see coming into the dip that she’d win.

“The plan was to get black type, and she has winning black type now. I’m thrilled to win with her — this was another career best — and I’ll talk to her owners about future plans, but I can see her running in the likes of the Munster Oaks and ‘Give Thanks’ next year.”

Aidan O’Brien won the opening two-year-old maiden for the 11th time in 14 years (he has won it with the likes of Serpentine, Kyprios and Grosvenor Square) when Trinity College, blinkered for the first time, produced a hugely impressive performance, making all and powering clear up the hill to score by no less than twelve lengths from newcomer Minella Boss.

The winner is a Dubawi colt out of dual 1,000 Guineas heroine Hermosa, who won her maiden at the 2018 Galway festival, and was ridden by Wayne Lordan, who commented, “He ran well in Leopardstown and stepped forward in the blinkers. I was able to go my own, even pace, he picked up and went to the line well. Like his dam, he’s very straight-forward.”

O’Brien’s representative Chris Armstrong added, “He has shown plenty at home, but has been very babyish. He’s lazy, but very genuine and the blinkers have helped. He could be a horse for the ‘Beresford’ or ‘Eyrefield’ and should develop into a lovely middle-distance horse next year.”

The Ballydoyle runner Medici Venus was narrowly denied in the two-year-old fillies maiden, collared on the line by the well-backed 3/1 favourite and Fillies Mile entry Tamam Desert, ridden for Eoghan O’Neill by Billy Lee (initiating his double) to get up on the line for a short-head win.

O’Neill explained, “She came from the Breeze-Ups and needed the experience of the track and learned from her Leopardstown run. She improved for it and wants all of a mile. She’s a work in progress and will probably go for the (Group 3) Weld Stakes at the Curragh now.”

Winning rider Lee, described by the trainer as “a fabulous jockey”, added, “I got a good run around, following Wayne but she took a while to hit top gear. That seven furlongs is a minimum for her.”

Course specialist Clear Quartz overcame a tardy start to take the Donnellys Of Barna Rated Race, collaring favourite Monasterboice (chasing a four-timer) close home to score by a half-length, under an inspired ride from Ronan Whelan.

The seven-year-old was winning at Ballybrit for the third time, to the delight of trainer Mark Fahey, “This fellow gets wound-up in the stalls and missed the kick, but Ronnie was brilliant on him – he didn’t panic, went down the inside and is brilliant everywhere, but particularly around here.

“This is a tremendous horse. He loves this place and will come back for the October meeting, if there’s a race for him, and then we’ll start looking forward to next year’s festival.”

Another course specialist ,nine-year-old Sirjack Thomas, winner of the Galway Mile in 2021, recorded his third win on the track when capturing the Galway Handicap for Ado McGuinness and Adam Caffrey,. Holding off Kinda Tiny by a neck.

In a virtual carbon copy of her breakthrough win at the festival, Danny Howard’s Sylkie (Colin Keane) came from well off the pace and pounced late to deny Eddie Go in the James P Cunningham Electrical Handicap while Barry Connell’s recent Roscommon winner Avondale (Daniel King) defied top-weight and justified 5/2 favouritism in the Galway Apprentice Handicap.

And surprise of the evening came in the concluding Sean Cleary Memorial Fillies Maiden as Joe Murphy’s 72-rated Dark Oak (Gary Carroll) stayed on dourly to land the spoils at the expense of Radar Ahead.
