Owned by Peter Johnstone, a founding member of the hunting industry in Zimbabwe, we offer both bow and rifle hunting for leopard, sable and plains game in their natural habitat. We can also combine our hunts with dangerous game hunts on other hunting properties in Zimbabwe, creating a truly unique and customised experience.

Rosslyn Safaris hunts out of Cawston Block, which is a dedicated safari area of 32,000 acres just north of Bulawayo. When it was first bought in the late 1980’s, game numbers were low. Intensive management, appropriate utilisation of natural resources, and the introduction of new bloodlines for a number of species effected a long lasting transformation in a land naturally suited to wildlife.

The result is a superb safari area with possibly the largest privately owned free ranging herds of sable and tsessebe in Zimbabwe. With a wide range of free roaming wild animals and amazing bird life, there’s so much to experience. It’s a true piece of African paradise and a must for any hunter’s bucket list.

Natalie edwards.

Natalie grew up in a small town, born into a hunting family and is the oldest of four children. She attended Rhodes University, Grahamstown, South Africa where she studied Accounting. She's an outdoors girl who enjoys hunting with her family. She married a fisherman in 2011 and now has two sons who love both fishing and hunting. An opportunity arose where she could work with her brother, earn a living and meet likeminded people; Natalie and Mark are both passionate about Zimbabwe and it's wildlife. And thus, Crane Safaris was born.

Mark Jansen

Professional hunter.

Mark is our registered Professional Hunter who specializes in Elephant and Buffalo. Mark is a born and bred Zimbabwean. He was born into a hunting family where from an early age knew he wanted to make a life from hunting. He excelled in art and rugby at school. After finishing his education he was accepted as a Learner Hunter (apprentice) with Zambezi Hunters under Johnny Hulme. This was for 2005 and 2006. An opportunity presented itself with the Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife, where he would be involved in the Problem Animal Control (PAC) program. He has dealt with crop raiding elephant and hippo, livestock killing predators such as lion and leopard, and buffalo control in 'foot and mouth' problem areas. This has given him unrivalled experience in hunting elephant. He also travelled to Botswana where he assisted with problem Leopards on cattle farms. Mark can be described as a quiet man until he has something to say. He has a natural presence in the bush; coupled with vast experience and a deep understanding of dangerous game behaviour. His goal is to ensure his client gets the whole experience that they envisioned and come to appreciate Zimbabwe as he does.

Steven Baloyi

Steven is a born Shangaan from the Shangaan tribe near Mahenya (South East Zimbabwe). He worked on cattle ranches most of his young adult life. Who (as fate may have it) the Jansen Family met and used as a tracker on hunts when Mark was a young boy. Once Mark left school (2004) Steven joined Mark and they have been hunting together ever since.

Livingston is a born Shangaan from the Shangaan tribe near Mahenya (South East Zimbabwe). He has worked as a tracker in the hunting industry for many years. Mark and Livingston met while Mark served as an apprentice hunter under Johnny Hulme. Years later they reconnected and now are working together full time.

Overview of Zimbabwe Hunting Safari

Zimbabwe hunting safaris are filled with adventure at every turn.  The country of Zimbabwe has remarkable resources and sights to see from Victoria Falls to Hwange National Park to Mana Pools National Park.  Hunting here is wild and exciting  like few places on earth.  It is critical that your Zimbabwe hunting safari is planned with a well established stable safari operator.  For this very reason, we work exclusively with the oldest safari lodge in Zimbabwe!  The owner of this lodge is a legend in Zimbabwe and his family joins him in offering clients a once in a lifetime experience.

We have never seen a more vibrant and healthy sable population.  Zimbabwe has long been known as the prime place in southern Africa for the majestic Sable!

Zimbabwe hunting safari

You will be hunting 32,000 privately owned acres with game that roams freely and in abundance!    Over 25 different species may be hunted from the dozen specially built bow hunting blinds or on foot with your rifle.  There is no shooting from vehicles and all hunts are conducted traditional by spot and stalk methods.

Located only two hours from Victoria Falls and only 45 minutes from Bulawayo where your host will meet you as soon as you clear customs and collect your baggage, this lodge is ideal for adding on amazing photo safari opportunities.  We will customize the perfect itinerary to suit your desires for your Zimbabwe Sable hunting and plains game hunting.

The accommodations are comfortable en-suite tents with thatched living area and lovely swimming pool overlooking a well-established busy waterhole where game will entertain you by the firepit each evening over sundowners (African for drinks).

Amazing numbers of game Covering 32,000 acres (13,000 hectares) this large Block including superb leopard, sable and plains game safari area – a piece of African paradise. It is perfect for families, groups, first time and experienced hunters. All our animals are hunted ‘free and fair chase’. Bow hunters may hunt at waterholes or may try their skill at ‘spot and stalk’ hunting. Rifle hunters are encouraged to go out on foot and participate in the joy of the stalk.

They hunt two leopard a year on the Block and have a high success rate in big male leopards both with bow and rifle.

Bow Hunters are encouraged and catered to.

Built on a rocky hillside, offers a delightful oasis of green lawns, shaded tents with en-suite bathrooms, a lovely swimming pool, deep thatched rooflines and a superb wooden deck overlooking a waterhole where game comes to drink. Our daily rate is inclusive of excellent food and drinks and attentive service to make your stay a memorable one.

Tents Enjoy classic safari style living of the golden era. ‘Meru’ style tents with proper beds; an en-suite bathroom with running water and flush toilets. 220v electricity is provided in each tent and adaptors are available to use. Hairdryers are available on request. 110v shaver plugs are installed in the bathroom.

The Camp There is a swimming pool and a large and comfortable dining / living area set around a very productive watering hole! During the dry season the waterhole in front of the camp is a busy thoroughfare of wildlife. The camp gardens are inundated with bushbuck, warthog, kudu and mongooses. Enjoy watching them while you relax in camp.

Food They strive to serve locally grown organic foods. Venison is the meat predominately served and they aim to serve meat from the animal that you have hunted and can prepare cuts to your request.  Organic duck, lamb and pork may also be served.

Not only do they have their very own dairy herd providing fresh milk and their own chickens for fresh eggs but they also make their own jams, jellies, peanut butter, hot sauces and pickles.

Most safaris are 7-14 days.

Day 1:  Arrive in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe where you will be greeted by your professional hunter and transfer by road about 1  hour to the hunting property.

Day 2 – ?:  Hunt and enjoy this amazing property

Departure day:  Return transfer to Bulawayo or if you would like to add on some days in Victoria Falls we will arrange all touring.

The safari property is one and a half hours from Bulawayo Airport, four hours from Victoria Falls and one hour from Hwange Main Camp.

Guests typically fly into Johannesburg then fly commercially from Johannesburg to Bulawayo where the lodge representative will greet you for your transfer to the property.

There is not internet at the camp, however, there is limited internet available at the camp office.  There is fair mobile phone reception throughout most of the property.

Our neighbors are re-settled farmers some of whom have been around for nearly as long as we have. We provide assistance in the form of loans of our tractors and trailers to cart materials. We service diesel engines for borehole pumping and weld carts and various items for the community. We also donate meat to community functions.

We have two local primary schools. Dundubala now boasts four classrooms for the seven grades, although the windows are still free of glass and the desks are few and far between. Mathonisa inhabits a collection of burnt and semi-revived outbuildings of an old farm. Both schools have dedicated teachers who weedle favours from us like carting river sand to build new toilet blocks, meat for their school events and fundraisers and transport to inter-school sports days! Our students on attachment undertake outreach sessions with the kids and tell them a bit about wildlife and their individual uniqueness and importance in our environment.

In October 2014 we ran a two day kids camp with an experienced facilitator who took a small group of 10 – 12 year old kids from Dundubala and Mathonisa Primary Schools and taught them about the wildlife around them, showed them animals that some of them had never seen, and most importantly, made it a FUN camp that’ll have them talking and thinking about the world around them. Most particularly we hope it’ll result in an anti-poaching awareness. We plan to run more of these camps in the future.

Clients wishing to bring something for the kids are encouraged to bring pens, pencils, crayons, chalk, writing books, learning aids such as flash cards, wall charts, maps. Monetary donations will be handled transparently by us who will provide you with receipts to show you what happened to it.

Redwood clinic, our closest at approx 8km distant, provides basic care to our community numbering upwards of 1000 people. In existence for nearly five years now it provides a three bed maternity ward, HIV testing and commonly associated disease testing, counseling and medication. It is staffed by three hard working nurses, two of whom live on site.

We mow their yard after the rainy season. We provide food for workshops with the local village caregivers.  Every village in the area (including us!) pay our monthly fees towards security for the clinic.  Redwood clinic completely and utterly burnt down on 10th November 2014 as a result of a large veld (bush) fire.  The local community themselves are working hard to clean up and begin the re-build. Various building materials have been sourced and it will be a slow but sure project. However, it will need to be restocked and new furniture installed.

Our First-Hand Experience

Virginia often joins us on check out trips and this time she brought her 11 year old daughter, Mary Carolyn (MC).  Josie and MC had a ball exploring the tents, hunting monkeys, night hunting, watching the Sable and other game congregate around the watering hole in front of the open-air lodge.  Both took trophies with their own PH’s while we went after a Tsessebee. MC proudly shot her first Guinea Fowl.  As a result, she collects Guinea fowl pottery and other guinea souvenirs.

One of our favorite “Virginia” stories came from this trip. Virginia is what we affectionately call a germ phobe and she is a very clean eater.  Organic clean eating is the norm in Africa so that was easy for Virginia.  However, she insisted on using hand sanitizer as she walked through the bush…she will never live that down!  We tease her to this day endlessly.

The tents were a big hit and everyone loved the adventure.  Bushbuck roamed around the tents creating our own little safari right there. We added to our hand etched Ostrich collection shopping nearby. After our time hunting, we spent a few amazing days in Victoria Falls fishing on the Zambezi, helicopter tours, visiting Chobe Game Park watching Elephant cross the channel etc.  All around another adventure of a lifetime!

As with all of our African hunting safaris, touring may be added and it encouraged.  It would be our pleasure to design a hunting safari with exceptional touring added before or after your time hunting.  Victoria Falls is a perfect addition to this safari as well as Hwange National Park and Chobe National park for some photo safari touring.

Built on a rocky hillside, offers a delightful oasis of green lawns, shaded tents with en-suite bathrooms, a lovely swimming pool, deep thatched rooflines and a superb wooden deck overlooking a waterhole where game comes to drink. Our daily rate is inclusive of excellent food and drinks and attentive service to make your stay a memorable one.

Tents Enjoy classic safari style living of the golden era. Five ‘Meru’ style tents with proper beds; an en-suite bathroom with running water and flush toilets.

220v electricity is provided in each tent and adaptors are available to use. Hairdryers are available on request. 110v shaver plugs are installed in the bathroom.  Tents are equipped with heaters and electric blankets for the cold months of June – August.

The Camp There is a swimming pool and a large and comfortable dining / living area set around a very productive watering hole! During the dry season the waterhole in front of the camp is a busy thoroughfare of wildlife. The camp gardens are inundated with bushbuck, warthog, kudu and mongooses. Enjoy watching them while you relax in camp.

Food They strive to serve locally grown organic foods. Venison is the meat predominately served and they aim to serve meat from the animal that you have hunted and can prepare cuts to your request.  Organic duck, lamb and pork may also be served.

Not only do they have their very own dairy herd providing fresh milk and their own chickens for fresh eggs but they also make their own jams, jellies, peanut butter, hot sauces and pickles.

Amazing numbers of game Covering 32,000 acres (13,000 hectares) this large Block including superb leopard, sable and plains game safari area – a piece of African paradise. It is perfect for families, groups, first time and experienced hunters. All our animals are hunted ‘free and fair chase’. Bow hunters may hunt at waterholes or may try their skill at ‘spot and stalk’ hunting. Rifle hunters are encouraged to go out on foot and participate in the joy of the stalk.

Most safaris are 7-14 days.

Day 1:  Arrive in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe where you will be greeted by your professional hunter and transfer by road about 1  hour to the hunting property.

Day 2 – ?:  Hunt and enjoy this amazing property

Departure day:  Return transfer to Bulawayo or if you would like to add on some days in Victoria Falls we will arrange all touring.

The safari property is one and a half hours from Bulawayo Airport, four hours from Victoria Falls and one hour from Hwange Main Camp.

Guests typically fly into Johannesburg then fly commercially from Johannesburg to Bulawayo where the lodge representative will greet you for your transfer to the property.

There is not internet at the camp, however, there is limited internet available at the camp office.  There is fair mobile phone reception throughout most of the property.

We are involved in several community & conservation initiatives including aid and support to local clinics and schools, rural job creation, protected animal monitoring and tracking, anti-poaching and animal pest control. Guests are welcome to take part in our outreach or conservation initiatives during your stay.

Our neighbors are re-settled farmers some of whom have been around for nearly as long as we have. We provide assistance in the form of loans of our tractors and trailers to cart materials. We service diesel engines for borehole pumping and weld carts and various items for the community. We also donate meat to community functions.

We have two local primary schools. Dundubala now boasts four classrooms for the seven grades, although the windows are still free of glass and the desks are few and far between. Mathonisa inhabits a collection of burnt and semi-revived outbuildings of an old farm. Both schools have dedicated teachers who weedle favours from us like carting river sand to build new toilet blocks, meat for their school events and fundraisers and transport to inter-school sports days! Our students on attachment undertake outreach sessions with the kids and tell them a bit about wildlife and their individual uniqueness and importance in our environment.

Clients wishing to bring something for the kids are encouraged to bring pens, pencils, crayons, chalk, writing books, learning aids such as flash cards, wall charts, maps. Monetary donations will be handled transparently by us who will provide you with receipts to show you what happened to it.

Redwood clinic, our closest at approx 8km distant, provides basic care to our community numbering upwards of 1000 people. In existence for nearly five years now it provides a three bed maternity ward, HIV testing and commonly associated disease testing, counseling and medication. It is staffed by three hard working nurses, two of whom live on site.

We mow their yard after the rainy season. We provide food for workshops with the local village caregivers.  Every village in the area (including us!) pay our monthly fees towards security for the clinic.  Redwood clinic completely and utterly burnt down on 10th November 2014 as a result of a large veld (bush) fire.  The local community themselves are working hard to clean up and begin the re-build. Various building materials have been sourced and it will be a slow but sure project. However, it will need to be restocked and new furniture installed.

If your trip is more than 90 days out from date of departure, a 50% non-refundable deposit confirms your reservation and must be received within 10 days of booking to confirm your dates. All trips must be paid in full at least 90 days prior to the departure date. If your trip date is within 90 days, FULL payment for the trip is required. All payments to Family Expeditions are non-refundable. Should you need to reschedule or cancel your trip, we will do everything in our power to assist you in finding a suitable substitute or transferring your dates per the lodge/providers/government requirements. Trip insurance protects your investment!

Use the guide below to help you plan your hunting trip to Zimbabwe.

Hunting in zimbabwe, preparation for your trip, preparation of trophies, health issues, terms and conditions, general information.

The untamed wilderness of this unique country makes Zimbabwe still one of Africa’s top hunting destinations. Formerly known as Rhodesia, Zimbabwe is a 150,820 sq. mile landlocked country between the Zambezi and Limpopo rivers. It hosts not only breath-taking savannah and woodlands but also large bodies of water such as Lake Kariba and the famous Victoria Waterfalls. Our trophy hunting season is all year round, but with the best hunting days during the dry, sunny, winter months (May to September). Average temperatures range then between 7°C and 20°C (45°F and 70°F) in comparison to summers that can be hot and humid (25°C to 38°C / 75°F to 100°F). Most hunting takes place in three different types of areas namely governmental hunting areas, tribal hunting areas and private hunting areas. Most of these territories are unfenced and open. Tsholotsho South is known for its majestic elephant bulls while Lake Kariba is home to excellent trophy crocodiles and hippos. When it comes to wing shooting, several species of duck, geese, partridge, guinea fowl, pigeon, dove and quail are available for hunting.

Firearms and Ammunition

There is no limit to the number of firearms that may be imported into Zimbabwe for trophy hunting purposes, however a hunter is limited to 100 rounds of ammunition per rifle imported. Handguns and black powder rifles are allowed but no automatic, semi-automatic or military category firearms. Bowhunting in Zimbabwe may only take place on alienated (private) land or communal (tribal) land. Bowhunting is illegal in Zimbabwe on National Parks Safari or Government Controlled Areas and no crossbows, recurve or longbows are allowed in the country. A .375 or bigger and a medium caliber 7mm – 300HxH range are suggested as generally suitable for most hunts. Should a hunter wish not to bring his/her own rifle on the safari, there are camp rifles and ammunition available for their use at an additional cost.

Permits and Licences

Each hunter requires a hunting permit from the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority. Permits must be issued prior to the hunt commencing and Chapungu-Kambako Safaris will obtain this on our client’s behalf. An additional, special permit is required for the large cats including leopard, cheetah and lion, elephants, crocodiles etc.

• Additional clothes when hunting during the cold winter months (June – August): 1 x warm padded jacket (cammo, khaki or olive green), 1x pair of gloves, 1x beanie, 1x buff and long underwear.
• Personal documentation: passport, airline tickets, rifle import documentation, invitation letters, emergency contact list and copies of all documents.
• Personal items: cash, toiletries, sunglasses, reading glasses, any prescribed medication (if applicable), sunscreen, cellphone and iPad charger, power adapter (Local power 220V) and leisure reading books.
• Hunting gear: camera, knife, ammo belt, binoculars, telescope, hunting backpack, flashlight, hunting gaiters or leggings and insect repellent (Skin so Soft by Avon is recommended)
• Malaria prophylactics

There is daily laundry done in camp. Below is a packing list to get you prepared for your Zimbabwean safari:

Port of Entry

The closest ports of entry to our hunting concessions in Zimbabwe are Victoria Falls International Airport (VFA) and Bulawayo International Airport (BUQ). Airlines that service these airports are South African Airlines, SA Airlink, British Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines and Air Namibia. We also make use of private airstrips at our concessions.

Travel Agent

It is advisable to make use of a travel agent when booking your international flights to Africa. Miriam Clingensmith at Frosch travel agency can assist with any flight bookings ( [email protected] / +1 713-590-8138). She is also available to meet in person at the DSC and SCI shows.

Entry and Visa Requirements

Every visitor to Zimbabwe must be in possession of a passport that is valid until six months after the initial date of travel as well as a round-trip airline ticket or other proof of exit out of the country. Temporary entry visas for Zimbabwe are required by visitors from almost all countries. Regulations change constantly and we advise all visitors to please check with their nearest Zimbabwean Consulate about entry regulations and obtaining a visa. A valid yellow fever vaccination certificate is needed for travellers coming from a country with risk of yellow fever transmission.

Health and Travel Insurance

It is important to note that all hunting safaris are potentially dangerous and it is each client’s own responsibility to arrange his/her medical, evacuation or personal insurance. We recommend Ripcord Comprehensive Travel Protection ( www.ripcordtravelprotection.com ) as a preferred travel insurer.

Travelling with Firearms

It is advisable to take out full insurance for all firearms before travelling anywhere in Africa. Ensure that your ammunition is in a separate lockable container from your rifle. Bows can be imported with a special hunting permit at an additional cost. Hunters entering Zimbabwe with firearms and ammunition must complete in duplicate a Certificate To Possess Firearms (Form F.R. 20) for all firearms and/or ammunition in their possession. Upon arrival in Zimbabwe, present this form together with a copy of the Letter of Invitation which we will be sent to each client before travelling. The temporary import/export permit will be issued at customs at the airport. Clients visiting or travelling through South Africa (depending on the airline in-transit regulations), will need to complete a South Africa Firearms Permit Application Form (SAPS 520) and obtain the permit prior to their arrival. Our continent is known for rich and colourful cultures, friendly people, exhilarating adventures and breath-taking natural beauty. Chapungu-Kambako Safaris can assist in arranging some additional sightseeing, interesting excursions or alternative activities for our travellers and observers.

Skinning of trophies and field preparation is included in our services, however all dipping, collecting, taxidermy work and shipping of trophies are not included.

A gratuity is a gift of appreciation for services provided. They can be given to staff members at the hunter’s own discretion. We can provide a proposed gratuity list as guideline should it be required.

Malaria risk is high throughout the year in the Zambezi Valley (which includes Victoria Falls) and in areas below 1200m from November to June. Risk is negligible in Harare and Bulawayo. It is recommended to take malaria prophylactics and other precautions. Adequate clothing as well as mosquito repellent are important to minimize mosquito bites. Each hunter is advised to also bring a small personal medical kit with necessary preferred medication for headaches, colds, burns, allergies etc.

Booking and Payment

Bookings are confirmed on receipt of the signed safari contract and 50% of the total daily rate. The balance due (which consists of the balances of the daily rate, trophy fees of reserved animals and all extras) is payable 60 days prior to the commencement of the safari. The only exception is for trophy elephant hunts in the Caprivi that require 4 installments, each of 25% on the total hunt value, from the date of booking to 2 weeks prior to the commencement of the hunt. Trophy fees of any animals killed/wounded and any additional expenses incurred during the trip, are payable at the conclusion of the safari and can be paid in cash in camp (US dollar notes, clean and unmarked and not older than 2009 series only) or by electronic bank transfer. Any unused credits will be refunded within 30 days of the safari end date. Any other payment arrangement must be authorized in writing.

Cancellation Policy

There will be no refund of any deposit paid within six (6) months prior to the 1st of March of the year the hunt is to take place in. If cancelled longer than 6 months prior to this date, 50% of the deposit will be refunded.

Policy on Lion and Leopard Hunts

It is hereby agreed that any leopard or lion shot, regardless of its age, without the consent of the professional hunter accrues an immediate fine of US$ 30,000.00 and $US 50,000.00 respectively. The hunt will not continue until payment has been received.

It must be noted that hunting is a dangerous vocation and although Chapungu-Kambako safaris are committed to your safety, comfort and enjoyment, we cannot be held responsible for any accidents, illness or death that may occur whilst on the safari.

DEPOSIT POLICY

We require a deposit being 50% of Total Daily Rates plus 2% ZTA Government Levy be transferred to NYAMAZANA SAFARIS to secure a booking with the balance of Daily Rates to be transferred one month prior to hunt commencement. Hunts sold in the previous year will retain that years pricing on daily rates only.

All trophy fees will be charged out using the price list relevant to the year during which the hunt takes place.

CANCELLATION POLICY

1. There shall be no refund on any deposit paid if a hunt is cancelled within six (6) months of the date of commencement of the Safari. 2.  In the event of a hunt being cancelled prior to six (6) months of the date of the Safari, then all efforts will be made to refund the full amount of part of the amount should the hunt be resold. Otherwise, if required the hunt will be sold at a discount against the deposit already paid. 3. In the event the Safari is cancelled by the Safari Operator, or the area is closed to hunting or travel for any reason, prior to commencement of the safari, the client will receive a full refund. 4. No refunds will be made if the client leaves the safari before the scheduled completion date.

POST HUNT PAYMENTS

The balance of any charges i.e. trophy fees, rifle hire, curios, staff gratuities etc. must be paid prior to departure from camp, in cash..  NO personal cheques or Travellers cheques will be accepted in Zimbabwe by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe. Note: Cash payment must be accompanied by a stamped Blue Form 47 form completed on arrival in Zimbabwe

TRANSFERS / CHARTERS TO AND FROM CAMP

Clients normally fly in and out of Bulawayo. Road transfers with the PH booked on the hunt, in the PH’s Cruiser are $250-00 should the camp be further than 400km. The PH vehicle can accommodate 1 person comfortably, and 2 people max. Should a road transfer in a larger vehicle or an air charter be preferred, we can arrange for this to be done.

CAMP ALLOCATIONS

These are done based on the area that will offer the best possible opportunity to take the species requested, as well as numbers in the hunting party. They are worked on a first come first served basis.  While we do try not to move bookings around once allocated to a specific camp, unfortunately there are times when this is necessary.   Camps are normally booked exclusively.

Hunt Contract – on acceptance of a quote and payment of the required deposit we will provide a hunt contract to be signed and returned. Indemnity Form – we require an Indemnity Form per person to be completed and returned prior to departure for Zimbabwe.  This is a legal document so should be completed in full and legibly. Invitation Letter – will be provided as soon as complete client information is received with weapons and flight details included.

It is essential for all clients to take out appropriate medical aid insurance that will also cover your repatriation to your home country. Global Rescue and Medjet Assist are good Insurances to look at.

Hunting in Zimbabwe: Legal Aspects, Tourism Attractions, and Professional Associations

There’s much more to hunting than pulling the trigger, especially when we’re talking about traveling to a foreign country. It’s essential to be aware of and comply with the most important legalities in the land you’re visiting, which would definitely differ from those you’re accustomed to. On the other hand, while you are there you may consider taking a side trip to see some of the tourist attractions and splendors on offer.  While my previous post about hunting in Zimbabwe dealt with the huntable species and hunting areas, this time let’s speak about laws and regulations, and finish with a few places that I recommend you or the observers who travel with you to do and visit. 

Hunting Licenses

• Safari Operators in Zimbabwe must be registered and licensed by the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority. 
• Only Professional Hunters licensed in Zimbabwe may conduct hunts in Zimbabwe.
• When booking a hunt, ask for the operator’s license number. This can be verified through Safari Operators Association Zimbabwe (Email:  [email protected]) .
• Operators must be in possession of a lease agreement and quota for the hunting area where they operate.
• Hunters must be able to prove that their hunting trip was paid in foreign currency for your trophies to be released by the taxidermists after your hunt. 
• The duration of the safari is regulated by the operator and not the government. Most safaris generally last 7, 10, 14, 18 or 21 days depending on what you are hunting. 
• A hunting permit (known as a TR2) must be issued to each hunting client.
• This TR2 form must be issued, signed and stamped by Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management prior to the commencement of the hunt. Application for Hunting NP/CITES – Hunting Return Form and a completed NP/CITES Form 11 may be required depending on what animals you are hunting. 
• This TR2 authorisation to hunt form also serves as a declaration of harvested game during the hunt, you’re banking form and export application permit. 
• Ensure that you are in possession of this paperwork at all times during the course of your safari.
• A Zimbabwe National Parks official must be present when hunting elephant, lion and leopard.

Firearms and Ammunition

A number of different airlines travel to Africa , some of which have banned the transportation of firearms on their flights. Prior to booking your ticket you need to ensure that your carrier will permit the transportation of firearms on your flight. It is important that you familiarize yourself with the latest laws and regulations for hunters traveling with firearms and ammunition as each airline and country has different regulations. We’ve written a dedicated blog on the subject where you can learn more.

To Africa with Guns: All You Need to Know About Bringing in the Firearms for Your Safari

Application for a temporary firearm import permit for Zimbabwe can be made on arrival at the port of entry. There is no fee for issuing a firearm permit. There is no limit to the number of firearms you may import but only a maximum of 100 rounds per firearm is permitted. It is possible to import a hunting handgun, but hunting with handguns is allowed only in certain game areas. It’s recommended to apply for the handgun import permit via your outfitter. Fully automatic rifles are forbidden; hunting (non-military design) semi-automatic rifles are possible, but it’s not advised to bring them on safari.

Minimum Equipment Required for Rifle Hunting 

Class A Game : (Elephant, Hippo and Buffalo) Minimum 9.2 mm calibre in diameter.

Class B Game: (Lion, Giraffe, Eland) Minimum 7.0mm calibre in diameter.

Class C Game: (Leopard, Crocodile, Kudu, Oryx / Gemsbok, Hartebeest, Wildebeest, Zebra, Nyala, Sable Antelope, Waterbuck, Tsessebe, etc.) Minimum 7.0mm calibre in diameter.

Class D Game: (Warthog, Impala, Reedbuck, Duiker, Steenbok, Jackal, Game Birds, etc.) Minimum 5.6mm calibre in diameter.

Black Powder Rifles: Minimum calibre .40

Bowhunting 

Bowhunting is legal in Zimbabwe . However, the hunting of pachyderms and thick skinned animals, like elephant , hippo and crocodile , with bows and arrows is no longer permitted.  Bow-hunting may only be done with compound bows. Bow-hunting with recurve bows, longbows or crossbows is not permitted unless a special permit has been issued for which the safari operator must apply for six months prior to the start of the bow hunt. This special bow-hunting permit comes at a substantial cost.

Minimum Equipment Required for Bowhunting 

Class A Game : (Elephant, Hippo and Buffalo) Bow Kinetic Energy 80ft/lbs. Arrow weight 700 grain.

Class B Game: (Lion, Giraffe, Eland) Bow Kinetic Energy 77ft/lbs. Arrow weight 695 grain. Bowheads with only two cutting edges.

Class C Game: (Leopard, Crocodile, Kudu, Oryx / Gemsbok, Hartebeest, Wildebeest, Zebra, Nyala, Sable Antelope, Waterbuck, Tsessebe, etc.) Bow Kinetic Energy 70ft/lbs. Arrow weight 618 grain. 

Class D Game: (Warthog, Impala, Reedbuck, Duiker, Steenbok, Jackal, Game Birds, etc.) Bow Kinetic Energy: 56ft/lbs. Arrow weight: 618 grains.

Trophy Export/Import Restrictions

Elephants, lions and leopards from Zimbabwe may in principle be exported. CITES I and II enhancement permits for importation of specific species are required by signatory countries to the CITES agreements. Unfortunately the EU and Australia do not always follow suit, so check with your outfitter if any of the species you would like to hunt need a CITES I or CITES II permit.  

As for the USA, the situation is complicated. In 2014 the US Fish and Wildlife Services (USF&W) announced the suspension on the import of sport hunted elephant trophies from Zimbabwe. Under the Trump administration the USF&W tried to lift the suspension, but, after a public outcry, had to reinstall it. At the time of writing, importation of elephant hunting species from Zimbabwe is considered “on a case-by-case basis”, and some successful cases have been recorded. However, we recommend you to double-check the situation before booking a lion, leopard, or elephant hunt in Zimbabwe, making sure that you will be able to import the trophy. 

Hunting Laws  in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe has 3 sets of hunting laws, depending which areas you are hunting in. Listed below are some of the more important hunting laws you should be aware of when hunting in the following areas:

Zimbabwe Parks Safari Areas 

• Hunting must take place during daylight hours – half an hour before sunrise until half an hour after sunset. 
• The use of electronic callers, night vision scopes, artificial lights and aircraft to assist with a safari are not permitted.
• Vehicles may be used to reach an area but shooting from the vehicle is not permitted. 
• All hunting must be conducted on foot and hunters must be at least 55 yards (50 m) from a vehicle before shooting at an animal. 
• Animals may not be driven or chased with a vehicle.
• Hunting may not take place within 440 yards (400 m) of a designated waterhole.
• Hunting with dogs is not permitted.
• Handgun hunting is not permitted but may be used as a backup. 
• Bowhunting is not permitted. 

Communal and Tribal Areas

• Safari operators operate within the bounds of the law and what they consider ethical hunting. 
• Hunting for certain species may be conducted at night e.g. leopard, lion and bushpig . The use of electronic callers, night vision scopes and artificial light is permitted.
• Handgun and bowhunting is permitted. 

Private Land Areas

• The landowner sets the standards and hunting ethics for their property within the parameters of the various wildlife protection laws. In addition the safari operator may apply their own standards.
• The hunting of nocturnal species may be conducted with an artificial light, electronic callers and night vision scopes. 
• Hunting leopards with dogs is permitted but requires a special permit. 

Information for Travel in Zimbabwe

The visa and health information should only be used as a guideline. When making your travel arrangements ensure that you get the latest information in this regard.  All visitors to Zimbabwe need to present a valid passport, return transportation ticket and sufficient funds. 

You will be required to fill out a Currency Declaration Form to state how much currency you are bringing into the country. You will be given a copy. Upon departure you will be required to show the copy. This is an effort by the government to prevent clients from possibly taking forex out of the country on behalf of Zimbabwean residents. 

A passport and visa are required to enter Zimbabwe. Passports must be valid for at least six months upon arrival and have at least three blank pages upon each entry. Zimbabwe entry visas can be obtained online through the Department of Immigration’s e-Services website or upon arrival at any port of entry.

Anyone considering travel should be aware that restrictions are subject to change at short notice, and all passengers should undertake proper research and carefully consider the necessity of their travel at this time. Visit your doctor at least a month before you travel. The following vaccinations, medicines and precautions are recommended:  

• COVID-19 . At the time of writing, unvaccinated travellers were allowed to enter Zimbabwe if they could present a negative COVID-19 test result, issued no more than 48 hours before their arrival at the border. However, this requirement is reviewed and changed from time to time.
• Cholera : The vaccination is only required when active cases are reported.
• Hepatitis A & B: Recommended for unvaccinated travellers.
• Malaria : Hunters are recommended to take prescription medicine to prevent malaria.
• Rabies : If you are bitten by a dog or other strange behaving animal while in Zambia, seek medical attention. Do not pet strange dogs.
• Typhoid : Recommended for most travellers.
• Yellow Fever : Required if travelling from a country with risk of YF virus transmission.

Insect repellents for biting flies, ticks and mosquitoes are provided in most camps. Ask your outfitter to brief you on the latest health information and equirements.  

Most hunters flying to Zimbabwe use either Harare (Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport – HRE), Bulawayo International Airport (Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport – BUQ) or Victoria Falls Airport (VFA) as their port of entry. In many instances this may require flying via South Africa to get there. Depending on your arrival time in Johannesburg (South Africa) you may have to overnight. If this be the case, and you’re travelling with a rifle, you will have to complete the firearm importation formalities for South Africa as well as Zimbabwe.

For those requiring an overnight layover in Harare or Victoria Falls, both cities offer an array of exceptional hotel options.

Places to Visit and Adventure Activities

Some hunting clients, especially those travelling with family and partners use the opportunities to experience some of the local tourist destinations. Listed below are some of these popular destinations:

• Victoria Falls:

Known as “Mosi-oa-Tunya” – The Smoke that Thunders and one of the seven greatest natural wonders of the world, now a declared World Heritage Site. The waterfall is nearly 2km wide and 100m high (355 feet high and over a mile long) and recognized as the world’s largest sheet of falling water. The spray can be seen from 30 km away and reaches 500 m high when at full force. In what is often called the adventure capital of Africa, there is no shortage of things to do: bunjee jumping, a giant cable swing, canoeing, white water rafting, kayaking, helicopter rides, sunset cruises and ample opportunities to shop for local made crafts. 

• National Parks

You may be game viewed out by the time you complete your safari, however the country has some fantastic National Parks. 

• Lake Kariba

This water wilderness and wildlife paradise is a laid-back holiday playground with a wide choice of activities ideal for families, a hot, tropical climate, fantastic Tiger fishing, lots of boating choices, houseboats, motor boating, sailing and water sports and wildlife and safari opportunities second to none.

For the more adventurous try a ferry trip from Mlibizi to Kariba. 

• Great Zimbabwe

This Stone Age medieval city in the south-eastern hills of Zimbabwe is thought to have been the capital of a great kingdom built in the 9 th century and abandoned in the 15 century. 

• Matobo (Matopos) Hills 

If you have time and in the Bulawayo area, a visit to this area is highly recommended. These granite kopjes and wooded valleys make for some spectacular scenery.

Safari operators in Zimbabwe are required to be registered and licenced by the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority. Whether you’re considering a hunting or photographic safari, it’s your professional hunter or guide who can ‘make or break’ your experience. Furthermore, your safety may often depend on their knowledge and training. Zimbabwe has particularly rigorous regulations in this respect, and all tour operators who offer these safaris are obliged by law to employ licensed professional hunters or guides. And Brent is about the best I have encountered in getting the job at hand done. He has extensive knowledge in every aspect of the game hunted. Personally, I have taken 5 of the dangerous 7 with Brent and have trusted my life with him on many occasions. I am sorry to say that I have taken all the animals to be hunted in Zim or would be returning to hunt with Brent again.

Read what I liked. Would not have hunted with Brent 5 times if I didn't like things. Haha.
