Karen Houston

Karen’s experience in the travel industry is vast. She started off at Thomson Holidays in the UK, and worked as a Reservations Manager for 10 years. She then became the General Manager of Portland Holidays in London, UK, and managed hundreds of staff for seven years.

After her move to New Zealand she worked as Head of Travel & Tourism at Crown Institute of Studies in Auckland. Always keen to take on a challenge, she established the International Travel College, and was CEO of this successful training institute for 14 years.

Retirement is not an option for the active person Karen is, hence the progression into Project Management & Training, and Consulting, which she has been doing for businesses around New Zealand for the last 3 years.

Gavin ensures all his training programs and material are highly interactive and focused towards practical application and results back at work.

He likes to design and run courses that have a good mix of learning methods, including practical exercises that deliver insights, develop skills, and engage creativity. Most of all: Learning should be fun!

Enrolling from overseas on any of ITC’s airline, travel or tourism courses is easy using this website. Applications from international students are accepted on all of our courses.

If you would like to enrol, the first thing you need to do is complete an  International Student Enquiry Form . This will help us assess your eligibility for the college. Once you have submitted the form, our friendly team can help suggest the best course for you depending on your future career goals and past education or work experience.

Our international team will be able to help you through the application and enrolment process, and will send you an official offer letter should you be accepted on a course. We can also arrange a ‘meet and greet’ service if you do not have friends and family in New Zealand.

Below is an overview of our eligibility criteria.

English Requirements (IELTS)

All ITC courses are conducted in English. Prospective students must provide evidence of their English language levels as part of the enrolment process. The IELTS requirements are as below:

  • Level 3 courses require a minimum of IELTS 5.0 (General or Academic) overall band, with no band score lower than 5.0
  • Level 4 courses require a minimum of IELTS 5.5 (General or Academic) overall band, with no band score lower than 5.0
  • Level 5 courses require a minimum of IELTS 5.5 (Academic) overall band, with no band score lower than 5.0

If you do not have an IELTS Certificate, you will need to provide other evidence of your English language proficiency. If you need help or advice in this area, please email [email protected]  or view other acceptable tests here .

We also have some wonderful  English Partner Schools  here in New Zealand that can help you improve your English before coming to study at ITC.  You may even be able to get one visa that covers both them and ITC with a special Pathway Student Visa!

Working and studying

The full schedule has been confirmed for rugby's Autumn Internationals, with the giants of the Southern Hemisphere once again coming to take on the Six Nations teams in a busy month of rugby.

England will have Tests against New Zealand and Australia before hosting world champions South Africa, a repeat of their World Cup semi-final, before completing their run of fixtures against Japan.

Six Nations champions Ireland have Friday night matches against New Zealand and Argentina ahead of further games against Fiji and Australia, while the All Blacks' autumn tour also contains trips to France and Italy.

Specifically designed for international students, the two-year Diploma in International Tourism and Travel Management (Level 5) course provides an outstanding suite of qualifications, most of which are well-recognised throughout the world.

The first year covers the practical skills required by the industry, including subjects such as flight attending, travel documentation, online fares & ticketing, reservation system (Amadeus), the cruise ship industry and destination geography.

The second year of the program becomes more theory based and focuses on sustainable tourism and management topics such as human resources, marketing, planning, research, finance, legislation and communications.

Throughout this two-year Diploma there is a full programme of field visits, guest speakers, work experience and industry participation events. Students will also have the opportunity to experience the NZ tourism industry ‘first hand’ on two 3-day familiarisation trips and the ability to work part time throughout their studies.

At the end of the course, graduates will be fully prepared to enter the tourism industry with both practical and management skills, making them highly valued by employers. Graduates are also eligible to apply for a Post Study Work Visa, which will allow them to work in New Zealand for 12 months to gain valuable industry experience.

Students may wish to continue their studies (straight away or after one year of working in NZ) by pursuing a Level 6 Diploma or Bachelor Degree qualification with another education provider.

Note: Students who enrol on this program at our South Auckland & Christchurch campuses are required to transfer to the Auckland City campus for the 2nd-year papers.

Entry criteria

Students must be 18 years of age by the start date of the course. You need to provide evidence of your English language level as part of the enrolment process. A minimum of IELTS 5.5 (Academic) is required with no band lower than 5.0. If you do not have an IELTS Certificate you will need to provide other evidence of English language proficiency.
