Top Reviews 2022

“A wonderful experience and tour. Everything is well thought out and it all runs so smoothly. Joe and Kody our guides were professional, knowledgeable and very friendly. They made the trip so enjoyable. We are asked to choose a highlight, but everyday had a new one. If you like the great outdoors then don’t hesitate to book your tour with Cockatours. The tour is excellent value and you won’t be disappointed.” Charlene, 2022

“Rossy takes so much care to ensure you are going to have a great trip! I went to Cape York on the MAN truck with Joe and Kody and you can just tell that Rossy chooses his guides and cooks with such thought and care to know you will have a great time! Yes it is real camping, yes there are mattresses and good linen, yes they really do have everything on the truck! Highly recommend pre-buying the souvenir shirt, they keep you warm in the water and cool in the sun!” Catherine, 2022

“A trip to The Tip with the amazing Joe and Kody was definitely a life changing and very memorable experience. They were fun, knowledgeable guys who made every day exciting and different to all the other days. Joe handled the 12-ton truck admirably, so that, coupled with his knowledge of the tricky road conditions and the comfort of the truck, made our travel something we could eagerly anticipate each time we boarded. Kody’s main role was to cook our meals, which he did superbly. Each meal was delicious, different every day, and served hot and plentifully. But he also took great care of us in many other ways, and had a fantastic sense of humour. Nothing was too much trouble for these chaps and they made every day a true delight.

The trip itself was superb. I’m sure we saw many sights, and heard much information that other travellers might not, especially if they did the trip on their own. I can’t recommend Cockatours highly enough and have put my name on the wait list for next year’s Gulf Savannah trip. There were too many exceptional experiences and places visited to pick a favourite, so I’d prefer to leave that for future travellers to discover for themselves.” Brodwyn, 2022

Explore a pristine tropical wilderness en route to the tip of Australia

About cape york.

Bordered by the Gulf of Carpentaria and the Coral Sea, Cape York Peninsula is an untouched wilderness dominated by mighty meandering rivers and vast flood plains. It’s the place where you can stand on the very tip of the Australian continent, discover the oldest rainforest in the world, and travel deep into wild frontier country.

Connected to New Guinea for much of the past 250,000 years, the repeated interchange of flora and fauna has bequeathed a rich biological legacy on Cape York Peninsula. Nowhere is this more evident than the Wenlock River, home to more freshwater fish species than any other river in Australia. You’ll also learn about the Cape’s incredible biological diversity at Piccaninny Plains, an AWC Sanctuary.

Itinerary  Details

(PD, Motel) We fly to Cairns where we are met by the coach and transferred to our motel. Note: Flights arriving after 6pm will have snack evening meal provided in the room.

(CB, RD, Motel) Travel along a spectacular coastline to the lush Daintree River, where we have a boat cruise then time for lunch at the resort town of Port Douglas. We return to Cairns for a free afternoon on the esplanade, with many cafés and restaurants, galleries, markets and stalls. It is a lovely coastal Queensland city. Note: Daintree cruise included.

(CB, MD, Motel) We head up the Atherton Tablelands to Mareeba then begin up “The Cape” to Lakeland and Cooktown. In June 1770, the local Aboriginal Guugu Yimithirr tribe cautiously watched the crippled Endeavour limp up the coast seeking a safe harbour after sustaining serious damage south of Cooktown.

(CB, RD, Motel) A full day in and around Cooktown including the Botanical Gardens and the James Cook Museum. Drive up Grassy Hill to the lighthouse lookout and wander the shores of the Endeavour River in the afternoon. Note: James Cook Museum entry included.

(CB, PL, MD, Motel) An early start through the Barrons Range to the Peninsula Development Road. Morning tea at the Split Rock Art Site, this Country contains a large and dramatic body of prehistoric rock paintings. Through Laura and Musgrave to Coen the largest inland town on The Cape. Over the Archer River to Weipa.

(CB, PD, Motel) Weipa began as a Presbyterian Mission to the Aboriginal people of the Cape and is now the largest settlement on the Cape due to a large bauxite deposit in the region now mined by Rio Tinto. We take an afternoon wildlife cruise exploring the Arafura Sea and Mission River. Note: Cruise included.

(CB, PL, MD, Motel) Heading north again we visit Fruit Bat Falls for a swim at one of far north QLDs most iconic watering holes. As the northern most tip of the country gets closer the journey becomes increasingly stunning. We travel through the Heathlands Resource Reserve and cross the Jardine River on the vehicle ferry to Bamaga settled by people from Saibai Island in Torres Strait, after Saibai Island was devastated by abnormally high tides.

(CB, PL, MD, Motel) Today is all about reaching the Cape. We take the final slow drive through thick forest to the Northern most point of Australia named by James Cook on 21 August 1770 in honour of Prince Edward, Duke of York and Albany. We drive as far as we can but then have to walk out over the rocks to the tip. From there it is 160km to New Guinea across the Torres Strait. We return to Bamaga to celebrate reaching this iconic Australian location.

(CB, MD, Motel) From Bamaga we take the ferry to Thursday Island. TI is the administrative and commercial centre of the Torres Strait Islands set up in 1877. Since then TI has been a pearling centre and defence base during WWII. We tour the island including the WWII tunnels and emplacements. The afternoon is free before our final dinner. Note: Cruise to Thursday Island and Thursday Island Tour included.

Camping in the Australian Outback is one of the great attractions of touring around the country. Over the years we have refined our processes and equipment to maximize the enjoyment of the camping experience.

Some camping is in the beauty of Australian bush and on other nights we use the facilities of caravan parks, National Parks or stations. Passengers are asked to assist to their capacity in teams to erect the campsite.

Tents are 210cm high and 270cm square at the base, fully floored with fly-screen sealed windows and doors. They are very simple to erect, simply four pegs, a pole in the middle and the tent is up.

Inside the tent sleeping is on suspension camp stretchers with a thin foam mattresses on top. It is recommended passengers bring a pillow and warm bottom sheet and sleeping bag or warm rug to sleep in. Sleeping bags can be hired when booking for $40 per tour per person. You can comfortably fit two friends into each tent, a single supplement is available for some extra space.

Australia's Last Frontier

Cape york tours.

Cape York Peninsula is one of the last unspoilt frontiers in Australia. Even now, it remains a wild sparsely populated wilderness that is accessable only in the dry season from May until October and then only by 4WD vehicles for most of the way. To travel overland to the Cape is still a true adventure allowing travellers to see the unspoilt and diverse scenery, wildlife and birdlife at close range.

Reaching the tip of Cape York and overlooking the myriad of exotic and unspoilt islands, is truly an awe inspiring experience. With only these beautiful waters between Australia and Papua New Guinea, one can truly appreciate the experience of standing on the most northern point of the continent.

About Cape York Peninsula

Where is cape york.

Cape York Australia is a large tract of largely unpopulated land, which covers the far northern part of Queensland. It includes ‘the tip’, an iconic landmark which is Australia’s most northern point, overlooking the nearby Torres Strait Islands.

Mostly flat, much of Cape York’s landscape has been left as it was for hundreds of thousands of years, except for several large cattle stations and some small isolated communities. It includes the historic township of Cooktown, which is a 3.5 hour drive from Cairns, and Weipa which is a bauxite mining community.

At its widest point, Cape York Peninsula is 430km across, which is from the Bloomfield River on its eastern coastline to Kowanyama on the west coast. It’s 660km ‘tall’ from the southern border of the Cook Shire to the tip. Roads of varying quality criss-cross Cape York. 4WD is the recommended mode of transport. There’s several remote air strips, the largest of which is serviced daily in Weipa and Horn Island in the Torres Strait Islands.

‍ We are off to Chillagoe! It’s an early start as we travel through the rolling hills of the Atherton Tablelands and the iconic “Wheelbarrow Way” stretching from Mareeba to Chillagoe, travelling through farmland, cattle country, wooded savannah and historic towns. Our morning starts with a National Parks Ranger Guided Chillagoe Cave Tour . Delight in the spectacular caverns and passages decorated by stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstones. Their formation began over 400 million years ago, with fluctuating groundwater slowly dissolving and sculpting the caves. Day 6. Daintree Rainforest to Iron Range National Park

Today’s highlight will be experiencing the Iron Range National Park with long sweeping beaches, rocky outcrops, and the largest area of lowland tropical Rainforest in Australia.

We will be visiting picturesque Mount Tozer viwing platform in Kutini-Payamu, Iron Range National Park. Be captivated by views from the lookout of colourful heath-clad ranges with Mount Tozer rising impressively in the distance. Learn about the park's cultural and natural history along the way.  Cast your eyes over the peaceful heathlands and imagine scenes of violent volcanic activity 250 million years ago!  Look for heath plants such as carnivorous pitcher plants and pretty ground orchids. See if you can identify she-oaks with needle-like stems, grevilleas with orange flowers, banksias with papery leaves and woody seed pods, and Jacksonia shrubs with pretty purple-pink flowers.

We will also stop to explore the long coastline of stunning Quintel Beach . The 200 m wide ridged sand flats front the beach, with pretty granite boulders scattered across the sands.

Our afternoon arrival brings us to The Temple Cape York : off-grid, isolated living at its finest. This is a great location with something for everyone! Fishing addicts, bike enthusiasts, bird watchers, military history buffs, and general lovers of life who want to just soak in the sea views. ‍ ‍ Accommodation : The Temple Cape York (FNE Exclusive use). Located in Lockhart, just 10 mins from iconic Chilli Beach . ‍ Meals : Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner are catered by Far North Escapes .

Day 7. Choose to relax, undertake activities, or explore Iron Range National Park

Today you will be treated to a Half Day Reef excursion to Maʼalpiku, “Restoration Island” to meet the inspiring David Glasheen. Losing his fortune in the stock market crash of 1987 was the final straw for David Glasheen. After a series of catastrophes, he needed to take drastic measures to restore himself. Opting out of the rat race, he cast himself away on a deserted island off the north-eastern tip of Australia, as far off the grid as was humanly possible. He has lived there ever since. He catches fish, traps rainwater and cooks on an open fire. For company he tames dingoes, meets with friends from the Lockhart River Aboriginal community 40 kilometres away, and entertains drop-in visitors. A great photo opportunity, inspirating life tale, and chance to have a yard with Dave!

If you wish to upgrade to a Full Day experience (upgrade arranged onsite), you will spend the afternoon on the crystal clear waters of the most pristine and untouched sections of the Great Barrier Reef. Visit a Sand Cay and drop a line along the way at The Temple’s secret spots. There is no denying that their backyard is a fishermans paradise… Esturaries, Reefs and Rivers loaded with all the A-List Superstars of the fish world – and maybe a few surprises you’ve never hooked before.

If fishing's not for you - choose to flop and drop and enjoy an afternoon at leisure on the stunning sands of Chilli Beach at THE TEMPLE CAPE YORK . Accommodation : The Temple Cape York (FNE Exclusive use). Located in Lockhart, just 10 mins from iconic Chilli Beach . ‍ Meals : Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner are catered by Far North Escapes .

Day 8. Iron Range National Park to Bramwell Station

Today we travel wind inland to Bramwell Station , the most northerly cattle station in Australia. Moreton Station is home to lovely bushwalks, as well as a fishing hole stocked with Barra, Saratoga, Bream and Jew Fish yar around. If you are a bird watcher, you will be surprised at the species that can be found along the river. Onsite is a lovely collection of memorabilia showcasing the history of the Telegraph Station. We are treated to a Station Talk followed by live entertainment. Located 2 hours North of Archer River and 4 hours South of the Tip – the station is a well know and well-loved stop for visitors to the Cape over the last 40 years…however it is most famous for its location: the start of the famous 4WD challenge the “ Old Telegraph Line Track ”, also known as the “OTL”.

Bramwell Station serves up a popular fresh food Buffet in the open air and spacious Bar area. Enjoy dinner under the stars with new friends and lively live entertainment. Don’t be surprised to get caught up in the fun at night and you get caught on camera dancing in a silly party hat! ‍ Accommodation : Bramwell Station , Located in Bramwell.

Meals : Breakfast at Temple Cape York , Lunch catered by Moreton Telegraph Station, Dinner a Bramwell Buffet at Bramwell Station.

Day 9. Bramwell Station to Cape York Peninsula

The Jardine River Ferry plays a crucial part in getting to Pajinka, as it links the Northern Bypass Road on either side of the river. It is less than 100 meters from bank to bank, and the Ferry itself almost fills that entire distance on its own. For the distance travelled, it is the most expensive ferry journey on earth! Don’t worry about the cost – the Jardine River Ferry is included in your premium experience. Enjoy!

Weather permitting, today we start on the Telegraph Track and the mighty Jardine River Crossing. Heading further north over the next two days we edge ever closer to our ‘bucket list’ experience, with some incredible 4WD adventure and hidden waterfalls along the way.  You’re in the heart of it all now!

Fruit Bat Falls is a fan-favourite stop along the journey – located off the Tele Track in the Apudthama National Park (Jardine River National Park). It is a broad, natural weir that is croc-free, and a beautiful and refreshing spot to wash off the dust on your Trip to the Tip.

Whilst Fruit Bat Falls is spectacular– a few kilometers up the road is our favouite - the gorgeous Elliott Falls. Not accessible by large tour groups, motorhomes or buses, you’re less likely to be sharing the rock pools of this stunning place with others. Travelling in a premium 4WD, we can get you there. ‍ Accommodation : Cape York Peninsula Lodge ‍ Meals : Breakfast at Bramwell Station, Lunch catered by Far North Escapes and Group Dinner at Cape York Peninsula Lodge .

GENERAL ‍ Safari vs. Premium Cape York Tours – what’s the difference?

‍ PREMIUM: Premium Tours are designed for those who want the entire Trip to the Tip to bean experience. We have cherry-picked the best accommodation options for our guests in each area to ensure you start and finish each day in comfort. Cape York is incredibly remote and undeveloped so true ‘luxury’ accommodation simply does not exist, however you will have air conditioning, your own ensuite, clean, comfy private accommodation to the best standard available. Premium Tours are capped at a total of 10 passengers to ensure you have an immersive experience. Our Premium tours are hosted in our Luxury Fleet, fresh off the showroom floor: our 79 Series LandCruiser, and 300 Series LandCruiser. A Scenic Helicopter Flight over Pajinka “The Tip” is included for all Premium Tour guests. SAFARI: Our Safari Clients will be travelling in a FUSO Canter 4x4 Truck, as opposed to luxury LandCruisers. Safari departures operate in conjunction with our Tag-a-long tours, so whilst there are only 6 passengers in your Fuso Canter 4x4Truck, you will have a small convoy of up to 5 additional (client owned)vehicles travelling as a part of your group. Safari accommodation is basic, clean, comfy and well appointed – however it is basic. This is reflected in your total trip cost. Safaris are designed for those who are on tour for the experience and adventure and don’t mind compromising on creature-comforts along the way to get the most bang for their buck. The Scenic Heli Flight over Pajinka “The Tip” is not included on Safari Tours, however can be added on as an optional extra. ‍

Group Sizes & Vehicle Allocation

‍ We have a strong focus on client experience, and as such our groups are small in size. We want to give you thebest, most immersive experience and that just cannot be delivered with large group touring. We have capped our numbers for this reason. The tour you have booked will determine the vehicle you are travelling in and your group size. PREMIUM: 79 Series LandCruiser – 4 Passengers PREMIUM: 300 Series LandCruiser – 6 Passengers Premium tours operate with a maximum of 2 vehicles, and 10 passengers per departure. SAFARI: Fuso Canter 4x4 Truck – 6 Passengers Although Safari Tours only have 6 passengers in the vehicle, these tours operate alongside our “Tag-a-long Tours”, which can a convoy of up to 5additional (client owned) vehicles travelling as a group.

15-Day Cape York 4WD Camping Tours

If you plan to visit Cape York only once in your life then this 15-day Cape York Camping tour from Cairns will give you a very complete experience. Meals Guides work extremely hard to provide passengers with excellent, wholesome meals. Cooking is often done over a campfire. Breakfast consists of a choice of at least 3 cereals, toast, and spreads, and occasionally a fully cooked breakfast is made. Lunch has a variety of cold meats and a selection of salad vegetables. With more time available in the evenings, our staff can concentrate on their culinary talents and present a complete 2-course meal. We begin with nibbles and ‘happy hour’; the main course could be a grill, roast, or casserole. An appropriate selection of vegetables is generally served with the main course, followed by a tasty dessert. If a passenger is on a medically prescribed diet, we will do our absolute utmost to cater suitable meals for that person. Before booking your tour, it is suggested that you contact our office to discuss such diets to assess suitability.

Participation All tours are conducted on a partial participation basis; it generates friendship and conversation. Assistance with vegetable peeling, firewood collection, and filling water buckets is greatly appreciated. Passengers assist with washing and wiping dishes and erecting their own tents after a demonstration; those less agile will of course be given assistance by the tour guides

Alcohol The government has imposed very strict alcohol regulations throughout the Cape York Peninsula and our company has a permit to carry certain quantities of alcohol and complies with all regulations and laws. Please do not bring any alcohol on tour. There is an Honesty Tin for drinks (beer & wine only). Any surplus money above the cost to purchase is donated to the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Cash On Hand It is usually recommended for each person to take some CASH spending money. Obviously, this depends on the number of souvenirs you intend to purchase (a tee-shirt will cost on average $25- $40, artifacts up to $500). Also, keep in mind that alcohol can be double the usual price in some places. Whilst modern ‘conveniences’ are on the increase in remote areas, including EFTPOS, do not rely heavily on there being cash out, however, Credit Card facilities are generally available at most stops.

Electrical Telephones, cameras, and other electrical devices can be charged in the vehicle with our inverter. Mains power is available in Cooktown, Cooks Hut Accommodation, Weipa, Bramwell, and Cape York Seisia Beach

Phones Telstra Next G network currently offers the best coverage in regional areas but does not work in remote areas. All vehicles are equipped with Satellite phones, but these phones are for emergency use only

Smoking As per government regulations, smoking is not permitted in vehicles. Ample stops provide time for “smoking breaks”. Smokers are asked to dispose of their cigarette butts in a responsible manner and not on the ground.

Vehicle Seating Vehicle seats are individual: Which are all facing frontwards NOT side seating. Vehicle suspensions are modified to ride as comfortably as possible but the roads to Cape York can be extremely corrugated and rough in places. Toilets and Showers Toilets and showers are available each night and morning of the tour. Toilets are either flushing or composting type.

We have just returned from Cape York. We booked this trip through you. So we thought we had better let you know of the wonderful time we had. The 3 tour guides were very experienced fantastic, knowledgeable, fun and willing to assist in any way. The accommodation was not always in tents and the nights we were not in tents we were in very special places and the accommodation was awesome! We had no idea it was going to be this good! The standards were very high! The accommodation owners were also so friendly, experienced, informative, accommodating and helpful. Given Covid, everything was managed exceptionally. The tour was very well planned out and nothing was omitted. Each and everyday had its own surprises and unique adventures. Let us not forget to mention the food! All Meals made and served off the beaten track were scrumptious and more than sufficient. We enjoyed steak on 3 occasions and have never tasted it so tender. Cooked to perfection. Meals out were also of the highest quality. All restaurants, cafes, hotels and eating places provided some of the best meals we have ever enjoyed. Great choices by the organizers once again. There was never a shortage of food anywhere or anytime either. Lunch and morning tea spots were well chosen with great views, nature and atmosphere. We have no hesitation in recommending this tour to anyone and are in fact doing so. Thanks so much for coupling us up with this small but exceptional tour group. They certainly earned their money. Thanks, with very fond memories of Kathy, Terry, lan, Peter and Mooks. Ian and Sylvia

Thank you all for an absolutely fabulous trip these last few weeks. The guys were brilliant – you should be very proud of them. So knowledgeable, helpful, patient and friendly. The country they showed us was amazing and so full of history. It will be my mission now to spread the word about your wonderful tours. My thoughts are with you in this difficult time and I really hope things start to pick up. I am so grateful for the experience you and the boys have given me. Many thanks. Julie

Fantastic! Loved every minute! Every day was an amazing adventure. Loved the small group and vehicle. Very social, fun, great food. Lots of surprises along the way. This is the only way to experience Cape York. I will be back, thanks for everything! Marianne

A truly fabulous experience – good company, great cook/guides/driver – top notch grub. Many thanks. Colin

We found the tour extremely interesting with very friendly guides. We enjoyed all the activities and lunches. Please don’t change a thig – you do it so well! It has been a pleasure to share the days with you. Moros

Thank you for a wonderful trip. Great food, great company. The information on the Cape, the special spots where we stayed and where we had our lunches were excellent. Top job, glad we came. Greg & Flo

Cannot express how much of an incredible adventure I experienced on the 15 day Camping tour just recently. I was able to reminisce my younger hippy days at Cedar Bay from the 70’s. Ian , Nev and Terry were a great bunch of blokes whose passion for the Cape was outstanding by able to deliver us so much local knowledge and stories from the area. The food was fantastic and we had lots of it as I am a big eater. The small side trips off the main itinerary were amazing. To be able to do a chopper ride from Roku Island around the Torres Strait Islands and the tip was both incredible and unforgettable. I am seriously looking to do another trip with your company as you really know how to look after your fellow travellers. John

Phone service will be possible in Cairns, Laura, Seisia, Roko Island, Thursday Island, Horn Island, Weipa, Cooktown and Coen. There may be other locations and all service will depend on the phone carrier used.

Tour Itinerary: Cape York & Northern Islands

B,L,D: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

The first stop on the Cape York & Northern Islands is near the borders of NSW, SA and QLD, at the Dig Tree, where the explorers Burke and Wills famously set up camp. Learn more about this pioneering pair and their ill-fated expedition.

Continue to Birdsville, where sunset drinks are at Big Red, the first of 1,140 parallel sand dunes marking the edge of the Simpson Desert. Look out over the vast expanse of not very much, and you'll honestly know you've made it to the outback!

To end the day, stay and dine in one of Australia's most iconic pubs — the Birdsville Hotel.

Overnight : Birdsville Hotel

Fly further north towards the Gulf of Carpentaria arriving in Burketown, halfway between Cairns and Darwin. Burketown sits along the Savannah Way, a 3700 kilometre route linking the historic pearling town of Broome with tropical Cairns.

Afternoon touring with a local operator, see some sights of the area including the Burketown Bore, The Old Wharf, Albert River and the Escott Crossing Weir. Hear how the water systems are a major feature of Burketown and an important part of the traditional Gangalidda culture.

Overnight at the Savannah Lodge, a hidden gem amongst abundant tropical gardens - a peaceful oasis in outback Queensland.

Overnight : Savannah Lodge

Kick off with breakfast at Adels Grove before heading to Bremer Island, Arnhemland, in the Gulf of Carpentaria.

Banubanu is an eco-sensitive beach retreat built in partnership with the Yolgnu people to ensure guests experience and appreciate the natural wonders and the culture of East Arnhemland in this tranquil location. With only six rooms, the whole retreat is reserved for your group. Beach Front Bungalows offer perfect barefoot luxury. Relax on your deck and watch the ocean, indulge in your outdoor shower and fall asleep to the sound of the waves.

2 nights : Banubanu Beach Retreat, Beach Front Bungalows

Today you will have the option to go fishing, canoeing, snorkelling or on an ATV tour. Migrating Pelagic like Spanish Mackerel and Tuna abound in the waters where the Gulf of Carpentaria meets the Arafura Sea.

Back at the lodge, savour a well-earned drink at sunset overlooking the water and enjoy the day's catch.

Continue west today to the Tiwi Islands with a detour via Darwin to hop on a smaller aircraft.

Tiwi Island Retreat is on the incredibly remote Bathurst Island, north of Darwin in the Timor Sea. Recently upgraded and expanded, the resort has a relaxed beach vibe and features oceanfront rooms and a wonderful pool deck with views over the ocean.

The afternoon is yours to relax, rejuvenate and soak it all in. Delicious seafood is a focus, with ocean-to-plate and locally sourced produce tempting your mouth to water.

2 nights : Tiwi Island Retreat, Ocean Front Room

Today is your chance to go offshore reef fishing on a half-day cruise. With an experienced skipper and all fishing equipment included, you'll visit some of the most remote, pristine fishing environments in the world, targeting a range of tropical species, including Barramundi, Blue Salmon, Black Jewfish, Golden Snapper, Mangrove Jack and many more.

Fly back east to Cape York, past the tip of Australia, and on to Horn Island in the Torres Strait.

Local history experts and tour guides Liberty and Vanessa will meet you on arrival. They'll take you to the Torres Strait Heritage Museum to view exhibits from the pearling industry, myths and legends of the Torres Strait, artwork, artefacts and the World War II history of the area. On the In Their Steps WWII tour, visit gun emplacements, an underground command post, slit trenches, an aircraft wreck with an unbelievable story, a WWII airstrip, dispersal bays and taxiways. Walk in the steps of the indigenous and non-indigenous soldiers who served in the area with insightful and entertaining commentary.

Transfer by ferry across to Thursday Island and your accommodation, shared with your fellow passengers.

2 nights : Island Villas (2 bedroom, 2 bathroom)

Today it's time for a bucket list adventure - a visit to the Tip of Australia. Fly by chopper over the region's 247 virtually untouched islands, spreading like stepping stones through the strikingly turquoise waters of the Arafura Sea. Land at Loyalty Beach, then bus to Frangipani Beach for a 500 metre walk over uneven ground to the tip of mainland Australia. Snap a photo for the memory vaults! Lunch is a picnic on the beach, then heli back to TI.

On return to the island, a tour of the island and Green Hill Fort reveals how its history helped to create today's dynamic, multicultural community and the tropical lifestyle it offers.

Ferry back to Horn Island to re-join your aircraft for the flight south to Lizard Island on the Great Barrier Reef. Take in the breathtaking coastline en-route and fly over some of the world’s most spectacular scenery on the reef.

As the most northern resort on the Great Barrier Reef, Lizard Island is truly secluded from the rest of the world. Exceptional service, facilities, touring and food are the perfect complement to swimming off the beach into the wonders of the largest coral reef in the world – very hard to beat.

2 nights : Lizard Island Resort

Enjoy a leisurely day relaxing in the island paradise that is Lizard Island, with activities at your discretion. Take advantage of the complimentary snorkelling equipment and lessons, stand up paddle boards and sea kayaks and it’ll be hard to stay out of the water. The local reef life will leave you spellbound.

If you’re feeling energetic, a walk to Cook’s Lookout, the highest point of the island with a 360° view, is well worth the effort.

Optional tours (at your own expense) include a boat trip to the outer reef.

Cooktown is your next destination, where Captain Cook sought refuge when his ship, The Endeavour, sustained severe damage during his 1770 expedition. Tour the many historical sites and learn how Cooktown prospered in a gold rush, dwindled, and then rose again to become an important base in World War II.

A sunset cruise makes for a wonderfully peaceful way to end the day. Nibble on a gourmet cheese platter, sip on a drink and listen to stories about Cooktown.

Overnight : Sovereign Resort Hotel

Fly to Laura for a tour of spectacular rock art. Quinkan Country contains a large and dramatic body of rock paintings. These galleries, at least 15,000 to 30,000 years old, are listed by UNESCO as being among the top 10 rock art sites in the world.

Fly over the vast Queensland countryside, arriving at Longreach in the late afternoon. Explore the historic homestead at Camden Park Station, enjoy the expansive view from the verandah, visit a circa 1920 shearing shed and gain an insight into the history of grazing in the outback. After dinner, witness a thrilling luminescent light show at the Qantas Founders Museum.

Luxury ensuite glamping at Mitchell Grass Retreat - with a private deck, air conditioning, indulgent king size bed and bath looking out over the plain, you may not want to leave!

2 nights : Mitchell Grass Retreat

Your day in Longreach begins at the fascinating Stockman's Hall of Fame, where the Australian Stockman's Experience will take you on an adventure that depicts the rugged, harsh and sometimes humorous antics of life in the bush.

Spend some more time at the Qantas Founders Museum — with an impressive collection of aircraft. Glide down the coolabah-lined Thomson River at sunset to Smithy's Outback Dinner & Show.

Next is Carnarvon Gorge, an oasis in the semi-arid heart of Central Queensland. Carnarvon Creek has carved a winding course through sandstone over millions of years to form a spectacular steep gorge with narrow, vibrantly coloured, lush canyons. Take a guided walk to Mickey's Creek, Warrumbah Gorge, and a narrow side gorge where you can touch both walls simultaneously.

At the front gate of the Carnarvon Gorge National Park, the lodge is set on 100ha, looped by Carnarvon Creek. Stylishly appointed cabins in the bush provide a remarkable base for touring into the gorge.

In the evening, cast your eyes upwards for a tour of the stars. The Carnarvon night sky is incredibly clear, allowing for some spectacular viewing.

2 nights : Carnarvon Gorge Wilderness Lodge

Take a long, guided walk. The Moss Garden, one of the best-known sites at Carnarvon Gorge, is an excellent example of how the spring systems work and is nestled amongst one of the best patches of remnant rainforest in the National Park.

If you choose not to do the full-day tour, you can spend more time this afternoon around the grounds or go on shorter walks around the resort. Sit on the private verandah of your cabin, drink in hand, and do a spot of wildlife watching.

Sadly, it's the last day of your Cape York & Northern Islands tour. The final stop will be Charlotte Plains, a 27,000- ha sheep station, or Lightning Ridge, to tour an underground opal mining camp. Back in the air, head for home to Melbourne, where you'll arrive at Moorabbin Airport around 6.45 pm.

Where else but Cape York can you stand on the tip of Australia, discover one of the world’s oldest rainforests in the world and travel on roads few even dare to tread? Just because Australia’s last frontier is calling, doesn’t mean you need to travel it alone.

For the adventure of a lifetime, without any of the ‘going solo’ stress, join one of these guided Cape York tours.

Save the hours of detailed planning, itinerary coordinating, and stress of driving and let a Cape York tour take care of the rest. All that’s left to do is sit back and watch the landscape ebb and flow between cattle stations, World Heritage-listed rainforest, wetlands, towering termite mounds and pristine beaches to name a few.

Accessibility Statement

Compliance status

We firmly believe that the internet should be available and accessible to anyone, and are committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of circumstance and ability.

To fulfill this, we aim to adhere as strictly as possible to the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 (WCAG 2.1) at the AA level. These guidelines explain how to make web content accessible to people with a wide array of disabilities. Complying with those guidelines helps us ensure that the website is accessible to all people: blind people, people with motor impairments, visual impairment, cognitive disabilities, and more.

This website utilizes various technologies that are meant to make it as accessible as possible at all times. We utilize an accessibility interface that allows persons with specific disabilities to adjust the website’s UI (user interface) and design it to their personal needs.

Additionally, the website utilizes an AI-based application that runs in the background and optimizes its accessibility level constantly. This application remediates the website’s HTML, adapts Its functionality and behavior for screen-readers used by the blind users, and for keyboard functions used by individuals with motor impairments.

If you’ve found a malfunction or have ideas for improvement, we’ll be happy to hear from you. You can reach out to the website’s operators by using the following email

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation

Our website implements the ARIA attributes (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) technique, alongside various different behavioral changes, to ensure blind users visiting with screen-readers are able to read, comprehend, and enjoy the website’s functions. As soon as a user with a screen-reader enters your site, they immediately receive a prompt to enter the Screen-Reader Profile so they can browse and operate your site effectively. Here’s how our website covers some of the most important screen-reader requirements, alongside console screenshots of code examples:

Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website.

These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.

Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside it.

Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over seven different coloring options.
  • Animations – person with epilepsy can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

Browser and assistive technology compatibility

We aim to support the widest array of browsers and assistive technologies as possible, so our users can choose the best fitting tools for them, with as few limitations as possible. Therefore, we have worked very hard to be able to support all major systems that comprise over 95% of the user market share including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Opera and Microsoft Edge, JAWS and NVDA (screen readers).

Notes, comments, and feedback

Despite our very best efforts to allow anybody to adjust the website to their needs. There may still be pages or sections that are not fully accessible, are in the process of becoming accessible, or are lacking an adequate technological solution to make them accessible. Still, we are continually improving our accessibility, adding, updating and improving its options and features, and developing and adopting new technologies. All this is meant to reach the optimal level of accessibility, following technological advancements. For any assistance, please reach out to

This award winning indepth tour brings the island’s history to life!  Your indigenous guides easy storytelling style, driven by pure passion for their island home will transport you into another time.  You will visit Green Hill Fort Lookout where the now silent 6″ breach loading guns jut out menacingly over the islands’ main approaches and from here we look south to the mainland, west to the pearl farm and north to the main shipping lane.  Be sure to have your cameras at the ready as the panoramic island views on this tour are nothing short of stunning. Green Hill Fort also houses a museum within the rooms and tunnels that once stored ammunition.  The themed displays include maritime, pearling, township and military history.

Disembark at the Japanese Pearl Divers Memorial located at T.I. cemetery on the northern side of the island to learn of the extraordinary and far reaching impact the pearling industry had in Torres Strait.  Another important part of this stop is the monument commemorating Bernard Namok  Senior who designed the Torres Strait Island Flag. The monument was unveiled on the flag’s 22nd anniversary, a memorial was unveiled at Thursday Island Cemetery.
