A life’s journey devoted to giving back comes full circle.

Awa Cisse

Awa Cisse (Photo by David Liebowitz)

There’s a word that carries deep cultural meaning in Awa Cisse’s native Senegal; Téranga , which comes from the Wolof language, connotes the values of selflessness and generosity, and the importance of giving back to one’s community.

For Cisse, the word téranga  isn’t just a reminder of her Senegalese roots, it’s a sort of guidepost for how she wants to live her life.

As a young girl she frequented hospitals for a variety of reasons. Throughout these visits, she developed a profound appreciation for all the people who give care to patients — the doctors and nurses, of course, but also those who don’t typically receive accolades.

“ There is this whole ecosystem of care, from the people who greet you at the front door to those who assist you when you’re leaving,” said Cisse, who is part of Trumbull College. “Every single piece of the puzzle is important, and it all helps make everything work. This is what inspired me to pursue a life in health care.”

For Cisse, a member of the Eli Whitney Students Program (EWSP), who graduates from Yale with a degree in molecular, cellular, developmental biology and French studies, that journey has taken many turns — some of which even she can’t believe.

She enrolled in nursing school straight out of high school, and over the next few years she worked in clinics and hospitals in her native city, Dakar, and later in Diembering, a remote village of southern Senegal. Eventually, she returned to Dakar to become the head nurse in a clinic.

While her journey began in Senegal, in 2018 it brought her to Georgia, where she was reunited with her father, who had come to the United States earlier. For Cisse, the change meant a temporary pause in her health care career; for a year, she worked at a call center, which not only provided a much-needed paycheck but also an opportunity to practice her English.

A year later, she enrolled in Georgia State University’s Perimeter College to resume her studies. She quickly discovered that the dimensions of health care were much wider than she’d ever imagined. “I had previously a very narrow view of what being in health care meant,” she says. “I didn’t really associate science as a component that is integral to being in health care.”

wa Cisse conducts fieldwork with the Bei Lab in Senegal.

At Perimeter College, mentors helped Cisse discover new opportunities and provided life-changing support. And as she built up what her advisor described as a “ladder of knowledge” in the sciences, she began to fully appreciate the link between scientific research and the delivery of clinical health care.

Cisse was completing her associate’s degree when she learned about the Eli Whitney Student Program (EWSP), which offers students with “non-traditional” backgrounds an opportunity to receive a Yale College education. While she admits she couldn’t locate Yale on a map at the time, and was skeptical that she would be accepted, she applied for admission and was accepted.

In 2021 Cisse moved to New Haven and immersed herself in her new community. (“Community is important to me,” she says. “That’s what téranga, is all about. That’s what was instilled in me!”) She enrolled in as many different kinds of courses as she could. She discussed school projects with classmates over pizza. She savored hours spent talking with friends about school, and about life, in Yale’s dining halls.

And she continued to explore the science underpinning potential public health solutions — including in the lab of Amy Bei, an assistant professor of epidemiology at Yale School of Public Health, where researchers use pathogen genomics and field epidemiology to test the role of genetic diversity in combatting malaria.

Working in Bei’s lab, Cisse even had the chance to conduct fieldwork in Senegal and be again reconnected with the rural communities.

“ I returned to these places where I’d first learned to challenge myself and to learn about health care,” Cisse said. “But this time I was returning to my country as an apprentice scientist.”

Don't antagonize the elderly, pope says in grandparent's day message

"To set the young against the old is an unacceptable form of manipulation," Pope Francis wrote in his message for World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly.

Justin McLellan

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- The elderly must not be accused of saddling younger generations with their medical expenses and pensions -- a notion which foments intergenerational conflict and drives older people into isolation, Pope Francis said.

"The accusation that the elderly 'rob the young of their future' is nowadays present everywhere," the pope wrote in his message for World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly, a church celebration that will tak e place July 28.

Even in the most advanced and modern societies "there is now a widespread conviction that the elderly are burdening the young with the high cost of the social services that they require, and in this way are diverting resources from the development of the community and thus from the young," he wrote in the message released May 14.

Such a mentality "assumes that the survival of the elderly puts that of the young at risk, that to favor the young it is necessary to neglect or even suppress the elderly," he wrote.

Yet the pope stressed that "intergenerational conflict is a fallacy and the poisoned fruit of conflict."

"To set the young against the old is an unacceptable form of manipulation," he wrote.

The logo for the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly 2024.

The 2024 celebration marks the fourth edition of World Day for Grandparents and the elderly. In 2021, Pope Francis instituted the world day to be observed each year on the fourth Sunday of July, close to the liturgical memorial of Sts. Joachim and Anne, the grandparents of Jesus.

In his message for this year's celebration, the pope emphasized that "God never abandons his children," even as they grow weak and "can risk appearing useless." But today, a "conspiracy surrounding the life of the elderly" often results in their abandonment by those close to them.

"The loneliness and abandonment of the elderly is not by chance or inevitable, but the fruit of decisions -- political , economic, social and personal decisions -- that fail to acknowledge the infinite dignity of each person," he wrote.

The pope explained that such a phenomenon occurs "once we lose sight of the value of each individual and people are then judged in terms of their cost, which is in some cases considered too high to pay."

Unfortunately, he said , the elderly themselves can succumb to this cost-benefit mindset; "they are made to consider themselves a burden and to feel that they should be the first to step aside."

Pope Francis blesses an elderly woman.

The pope then recounted the Bible story in which the elderly Naomi encourages her two daughters-in-law to return to their hometowns after the death of her husband and children since she sees herself as a burden to them. "Her words reflect the rigid social and religious conventions of her day, which apparently seal her own fate," the pope wrote.

While Orpah returns home, grateful for the encouragement, Ruth "is not afraid to challenge customs and inbred patterns of thought" and "courageously remains at her side," he wrote.

The pope encouraged all people to "express our gratitude to all those people who, often at great sacrifice, follow in practice the example of Ruth, as they care for an older person or simply demonstrate daily closeness to relatives or acquaintances who no longer have anyone else."

Pope Francis also pointed out how in poorer countries elderly people are often left alone because their children are forced to emigrate, and in regions ravaged by conflict young men are called into conflict while women and children flee for safety, leaving elderly people alone in areas "where abandonment and death seem to reign supreme."

In a statement released with the pope's message , Cardinal Kevin J. Farrell, prefect of the Dicastery for Laity, the Family and Life, which organizes the world day, lamented the "bitter companion" that is loneliness in the lives of elderly people.

"Attending to our grandparents and the elderly ," he said, "i s not only a sign of gratitude and affection, but a necessity in the construction of a more human and fraternal society."

The cardinal's message was also accompanied by pastoral guidelines and liturgical resources for parishes and dioceses. The guidelines suggest that Catholics visit the elderly people within their own community, share with them the pope's message an d p ray together.

The document said that to involve the elderly in the day, " o lder people can be asked to offer special prayers for young people and for peace."

"The ministry of intercession is a real vocation of the elderly," it said.

Writer Carvell Wallace on past pain and forgiveness: Letting go is 'always available'

Headshot of Tonya Mosley.

Tonya Mosley

Another Word for Love, by Carvell Wallace

Award-winning writer Carvell Wallace was 12 when he had a realization: He couldn't rely on anyone else; the only person that would always be with him in the world was himself.

Wallace, who grew up unhoused for a year, sometimes sleeping in a car with his mother, calls the realization "a wounded response ... a way of ensuring myself against the actual feelings."

In his new memoir, Another Word for Love , Wallace writes about his early life with, and without, his mother in western Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles. He also chronicles his addictions, becoming a parent and a writer, and coming into his own as a queer Black man.

Wallace didn't start writing until he was 40 years old, beginning with an impassioned Facebook post in response to the death of Black teenager Michael Brown , who was shot and killed by police in Ferguson, Mo., in 2014. He's since written profiles of musicians, athletes and politicians for publications like The New York Times Magazine, Rolling Stone and The New Yorker. He's also the co-author, along with basketball star Andre Iguodala, of The Sixth Man, which chronicles Iguodala's NBA career.

Wallace says he's careful to avoid what he calls "trauma porn" when writing about his own experiences with poverty, racism and homophobia: "There's a weird kind of ghoulish fascination with watching people suffer under oppression for art and for people writing about their oppression and reliving it over and over again."

For his own memoir, Wallace says his focus is on the root of his pain and his recovery from it, rather than the nature of the pain. "This is about what it means to become whole again. This is about living and hope and fullness and the regaining of self. This is about courage," he says.

Interview highlights

On processing his trauma about his mom through writing

I think it was cathartic and healing, ... even though that's cliché, because it helped relieve me of some lingering resentment that I may have still been carrying towards her. Because I believe that, like any resentment that we have, I mean, even if they're justified, they're more harmful to us than they are to anyone else. ... [When] my mother was alive, I had a very complicated relationship with her. On the one hand, I loved her, and it was great. On the other hand, I was mad at her for leaving. I was mad at her for not being there. I was mad at her for the way that the things that happened in my life, as a result of the way that she, in my opinion, chose to live.

On forgiving his mom before she died

Towards the end of her life, I had a real moment of clarity, like two days before she died, where suddenly it dawned on me, oh, wait a second, there's no benefit to me being mad at this person. ... And after that point, I was like, oh, you can actually let go of anything at any time, can't you? That's actually possible. It might not be easy, but it's available to you.

A Black Mother Reflects On Giving Her 3 Sons 'The Talk' ... Again And Again

And so it has become really important for my health, but also out of respect for my mother and my ancestry, that I let go of whatever troubles I have with this person — or had — and focus on what their power and beauty and glory was. And I actually believe that there's a real personal and political benefit to that, because it allows me to be empowered. It allows me to connect to her sources of power. It allows me to show up more fully. ... So I have no doubt that she joined me in the writing of this book. I have no doubt that this was what she wanted for me on some level. And to whatever extent she's able to reach me from wherever she is.

Carvell Wallace's new memoir is Another Word for Love.

Adults have tremendous emotional and spiritual power in the lives of children, and I'm always surprised by how deep that goes. And so [my aunt] saying, in 1987, "You're terrible, you're a freak, you disgust me," is incredibly powerful. And this person saying in 2011, or whatever year that was, "I hope you've been able to recover from that," is also powerful. I think I got off the phone [with my aunt], I was like, yeah, I'm going to magically be free. ... And what I learned is that it was a good beginning, but all of the scarring and damage around it was all there. So it didn't magically snap a finger and disentangle everything. It was like, now I have permission to start disentangling.

On what it means to make his life an apology

The ways in which we harm one another can never be undone. You cannot un-harm a person. And that is a heavy realization to have, and yet, to me, absolutely necessary. Because if you truly want to make amends and make right, you have to fully embrace the fact that I can't un-harm a person. ...

The real apology is changing the behavior. So if you just say, "I'm sorry," and, "That was terrible," and then you just keep doing the same thing, that's not enough. And so for me to live as an amends is to wake up every day with the consciousness that I am responsible for my behavior. ... And it's necessary for me to deal with my behavior and my problems and my triggers and my shortcomings and whatever, because of the way those things have harmed other people, that it's actually necessary for me to deal with them. It's not optional. It's not, "Oh, today I'm going to try and be good." It's actually I've already done enough harm to people that I owe this to the world.

On writing about what his mom's life could have been if she had an abortion

It felt so good because again, I am also living in amends to my mom. And what that means is I am trying to love her in her fullness now, in ways that maybe I wasn't able to do when she was alive. And so there is a feeling of joy that I get from being able to examine her full self. And so that part felt good. Obviously, there's also grief. There's tremendous grief, and none of it is like, "I shouldn't have been born. I ruined my mother's life." I have no inkling of that. That's not even remotely how it works in my mind. It's more like grief for what she couldn't have. And I think the fact that she has passed helps a lot because in my belief, I think she gets more opportunities. Her spirit and soul will get more opportunities to embody themselves in new ways. And so this go-round that she had may not have been everything she wanted it to be, but she's been freed from this, from these constraints — and I love that for her.

Hannah Dodd, who stars as Francesca Bridgerton in season 3 of 'Bridgerton'

Season three of “ Bridgerton ” introduces several new faces, but one stands out: Hannah Dodd, who takes over the role of Francesca Bridgerton (after Ruby Stokes, who played the role in seasons one and two, dropped out for scheduling reasons). Dodd jumps into the role of Francesca, a shy, piano-obsessed middle Bridgerton daughter who makes her debut into society in season three.

Dodd, 28, sent through a tape for a mystery project, and then didn’t hear anything for months, when she finally got a call saying they wanted to meet her.

Given the character was established in the first two seasons but enters the plot as a main role this season, Dodd had flexibility in crafting her.

“I love so much about her. It’s so nice when you play a character that you genuinely adore. The thing that I’m most excited about is that she is just slightly different,” Dodd says. “It’s so nice that maybe people who are a bit more introverted and maybe don’t see themselves in the Bridgerton family might relate to her in a slightly different way. And her love story is slightly different to what we’ve seen before and what love can look like and what it feels like. It’s really dramatized and romanticized a lot of the time in TV and film and books, and it’s really nice to tell us slightly different versions of that as well.”

Dodd grew up between Essex and Suffolk in the U.K. and began her career as a dancer before starting with musical theater. When she was at dance college she did a short film for Burberry , which was her first experience being on a set.

“I just loved that feeling of working with a giant crew and everybody bringing something that they’d trained in, whether it’s hair, makeup, costume, the cameras, the lighting. I just loved being part of a team and being one cog in telling a story,” she says.

Her first proper acting job was playing a ballerina in a TV show, and her acting snowballed from there.

‘Bridgerton’ Season 3 Premiere Red Carpet Fetes Nicola Coughlan, Luke Newton, Tori Kelly, Shonda Rhimes and More

“It was never a conscious decision to move away from dancing, but I just fell in love with acting,” she says. “And it’s kind of the same thing to me, even though they’re completely different, but they really did kind of go parallel together.”

Now that the first half of season three has launched (with the second coming in June), Dodd faces her first time launching a project of this scale into the world.

“It’s my birthday on the Friday, so my friends are kind of forcing me to do something,” she says. “I don’t know yet whether I’ll be watching it or hiding.”
