Take one Grandia-style battle system; add challenging bosses and optional arenas; season to taste

Journey to Kreisia is a turn-based JRPG developed by Exe-Create and published by Kemco. Its battle system is very similar to games like Grandia or Final Fantasy X, and almost identical to Exe-Create’s Revenant Saga (which was made a year later). This review is of the 3DS version, which has no in-game purchases. Instead, the 3DS version has a “points shop” where points from grinding enemies can be exchanged for various powerful items.

The story of Journey to Kreisia invokes a common trope in fantasy literature, television, and games – that of an ordinary, modern-day person suddenly transported to a fantasy world.

Kreisia is a fantastic world inhabited by three races, and periodically menaced by the Overlord. Every ten years, a priestess of Kreisia summons a Savior to vanquish the Overlord and win a fleeting decade of peace; but the Overlord always comes back.

Kreisia’s latest Savior is Yusis, a 17-year-old who dislikes homework, gets nagged by his parents, and has an affinity for anime and video games. He is in way, way over his head.

Kreisia’s story is heavily predictable. What carries it is not the unsurprising turns of its plot, but the appeal of its main characters, especially Yusis, who struggles with things like physical exhaustion from hiking about. There is a fair amount of charm and humor to lighten the otherwise dark story, set in a world that has been repeatedly on the brink of annihilation for generations.

Journey to Kreisia’s turn-based battle system has one unique feature: equipment “levels up” in a sense. As characters fight battles with a specific weapon or piece of armor, it earns points that grants bonuses. But characters still need to upgrade their weapons and armor periodically. Transfering points is possible between weapons (this is needed to keep access to battle skills for much of the game), but not armor. Furthermore, transferring weapon points does not transfer attack bonuses with the weapon.

Ultimately, this unique feature feels unnecessary, even annoying (found a shiny new weapon? Better go back to town and transfer points!)

What makes Kreisia’s battle system memorable is its level of challenge. There are three difficulty settings, Easy, Normal and Hard; they affect the rewards of battle, but not the story. The game’s difficulty can be changed on the fly, but when the difficulty is raised it can’t be lowered again until 20 battles have been fought.

On Normal difficulty, bosses steadily ramp up from “requires thought” to “one wrong move could be catastrophic” and beyond. This is Kreisia’s greatest strength, and gamers in search of a challenge can push the battle system to its limit in optional monster arenas.

Journey to Kreisia has multiple endings, but a second playthrough is required to earn some of its possible endings. Save data from completing the game opens a new game+ mode where levels and items carry over, hidden passages become visible on the in-game maps, additional story scenes are present during the second playthrough, and a cutscene skip feature is added.

The carried-over levels turn 9/10 of replaying Kreisia into a visual novel – but if the player chooses to pursue one of the new endings, the last 1/10 brings back Kreisia’s challenge with an extra side of merciless monsters to go.

Overall, Journey to Kreisia is a game worth playing. Its story is not the best, but good enough. Its battle system is not the best, but good enough. Its sense of challenge is what sets it apart.

This treasure among Kemco JRPGs has no in-game purchases on the 3DS

Journey to Kreisia is a JRPG with turn-based, menu-driven combat, developed by Exe-Create and published by Kemco. Like nearly all Kemco JRPGs, Journey to Kreisia is a digital-only game, originally created for mobile platforms.

Like all 3DS ports of Kemco's mobile JRPGs, Journey to Kreisia on the 3DS sells for a higher base price than mobile versions but has no in-game purchases. Instead, the player can grind "Kreisia points" from fighting regular battles, and trade them in for powerful items at an in-game "points shop".

Gameplay: 9/10

Journey to Kreisia has solid JRPG gameplay with random encounters and turn-based, menu-driven combat. The battle system resembles the Grandia series or Final Fantasy X, in that the speed statistic directly affects how many turns players or enemies get, and a couple abilities exist that can delay the enemy's turn.

Overhead perspective (not first-person perspective) is used for exploration. There is a handy in-game map for every area. One notable feature is the presence of numerous treasure chests with hidden paths - the only way to reach some chests on the first playthrough is to correctly guess which walls hold a secret passage leading to them.

Journey to Kreisia has multiple endings, some of which can only be obtained during a new game+ playthrough with carried-over save data. In new game+, the player keeps their levels, money, and nearly all items, making about 9/10 of the second playthrough a breeze. Hidden passages become visible on the in-game map. There is also a cutscene skip feature, but if the player chooses not to use it, they will experience new and extended cutscenes at various points in the game's story. New game+ also has an exclusive postgame dungeon, leading to the additional endings.

What makes Journey to Kreisia stand out is that it's surprisingly challenging. The player has the choice of Easy, Normal, and Hard difficulties; difficulty selection affects the battle rewards, but not the story. The difficulty can be changed mid-game; once the difficulty is altered, 20 battles must be fought before it can be altered again.

A Normal difficulty playthrough slowly but surely ramps up the clout of Kreisia's bosses, from "requires thought" to "one wrong move could spell disaster" and beyond.

Completing Kreisia (especially its postgame dungeon) might require a little bit of level grinding. Although grinding way, way past level 99 is possible, doing so is not needed except for optional arena challenges and such.

Kreisia is a full-length JRPG with optional sidequests. Completing it once will likely take at least 20-30 hours. A second playthrough with carried-over levels will be much shorter, but the postgame dungeon will require the player to get serious.

Graphics: 8/10

The high marks take Kreisia's budget-friendly price into account, as well as the limitations of the 3DS. That being said, Kreisia's spritework is quite nice to look at, and will bring back fond memories of 16-bit JRPGs. Nearly every battle ability has a unique animation. Major characters have a variety of expressive, anime-style portraits that work very well for storytelling.

Sound/Music: 9/10

Kreisia has no voice acting and a limited sound effect repertoire. It gets high marks for its catchy music, especially its "outdoors" theme and its regular battle theme.

Story: 9/10

Kreisia's story is a spin on the timeless trope of "ordinary person gets transported to a fantasy world."

Kreisia is a world inhabited by three different races, each with their own quirks and rivalries. All three races suffer from the periodic rise of the Overlord. Every ten years, a Kreisian priestess summons a Savior to vanquish the Overlord and bring a decade of peace, but the Overlord always comes back.

The soul of Kreisia's story lies in its protagonist Yusis, an ordinary 17-year-old who likes anime/manga/video games, gets nagged by his parents, and hates schoolwork. Yusis is inexplicably summoned to be Kreisia's latest Savior... and he is in way, way over his head.

Kreisia's story is quite predictable at times, with the occasional anime/JRPG cliche thrown in for good measure. What makes it worthwhile is how well it is told (the English localization is quite smooth), and especially how Yusis has to confront his own weaknesses, step by step.

Summary: Is Journey to Kreisia worth your $10?

If you love JRPGs, then yes. The story, while not groundbreaking, is well-told with likeable characters, especially the hero. The gameplay is thoroughly enjoyable with plenty of optional challenges.

Now that the 3DS is in the twilight of its lifespan, it's only a matter of time before the 3DS eshop shuts down and the 3DS version of Journey to Kreisia becomes inaccessible. As of this writing Kreisia is no longer supported on Android, although it's still on iOS.

If you're interested in Journey to Kreisia on the 3DS, buy and play it while you can.
