Brilliant baboon bus

We have visited here many times especially during the recent pandemic. We have always felt extremely safe with all of the extra safety measures that have been put in place. This was our first experience on the baboon bus which we thought was really good. The driver did an excellent commentary all round but the other passengers were extremely noisy and it was often difficult to hear him. Unfortunately due to the heat we did not get to experience many baboons climbing on the ropes along the bus. The staff were excellent during the sea lion show by ensuring that everybody was kept safe.

From visiting the self drive safari and the foot safari, was better than any awesome review that I could write, just totally out of this world and definitely will be back. Staff were very friendly and everything was extremely clean. Our first visit and definitely won’t be the last

Just left here after not being able to get tickets to Blackpool or Chester zoo, & we needed somewhere to break up a long journey from Blackpool to Kent. This was the perfect place. Enjoyed the safari, we avoided the monkeys, but could still drive alongside the enclosure & see them climbing on everyones cars! The lions were all lying right by the side of the road which was great to see them so close. Rest of the animals had good enclosures & everywhere was well looked after. We payed £10 for the wristband so my son could go on all the rides & thought it was so good that they let an adult ride with them for free. All in all a good day out for all the family 😁

I enjoyed watching the monkeys sitting on people’s cars. I personally opted out of this. Not a great deal of animals to see.

I'm here now and they've sold most of their animals due to the loss of money from the pandemic. There is no mention of this on their website or any warning of some animals not being there. You can't feed the giraffes due to social distancing but everywhere else in the park people are not social distancing... Took us 10 minutes to drive through the park and we seen 3 different animals. Don't bother walking through the tiger psrt as there isn't one.

It’s a shame because the park itself is really good, lots to do. However, the staff and some others higher up are taking Covid restrictions into their own hands and creating their own rules. If you watch the sea lion show and you’re exempt from masks you get segregated from other visitors and made to sit in the right section. The staff then make threats to grown adults that if they’re caught pulling masks down during the show then they will terminate the show and everyone will have to leave. We also was wanting to sit in the cafe to have lunch and then when I said I was exempt they advised us to sit in the marquee instead. The discrimination is as clear as day and it’s disgusting. But yet, the park itself is absolutely packed with visitors and it’s actually impossible to socially distance during any other activity.

  • Knowsley Safari

We have been to the Safari Park many times but this was our first on the baboon bus. The foot safari was free entry so it meant this way was cheaper for us than the £20 a car - we’re a family of 3. Really enjoyed not having to drive round yourself. The driver was very informative but at times we couldn’t hear. Not due to the noise of the children on the bus but the adults behind us having a catch up chinwag - shame on you!!! The best section is obviously the baboon zone. The bus has ropes on the side so the baboons can come say hi!!! We had a few visits. I have to say I would personally never take my own car through after seeing what those naughty baboons get up to!!! A thoroughly enjoyable visit.

Hadn't been to Knowsley for years but we decided to go last minute after we read about the winter offer of only £20 per car with upto 6 people for both the driving safari and the walking safari. It was fantastic and despite the freezing weather, the animals were mostly very active... Especially the baboons who conducted the usual assault on our car!! 😂 The walking safari is really good too, especially the tigers. Love how the enclosure has been done as you can almost always see the tigers. Really would recommend you go between now and February at this really good price as usually it would cost £50-£60 for the 4 of us to go.

A good pleasant day out if you live in the local area, if you are travelling from far away Chester zoo which is nearby has more things to see which may be a better option. Lots of space in the park is not used so more exhibits and attractions could easily be added. The food is ok and portions are quite big, however those looking for healthier or vegetarian options may struggle to find things. The Sea lion show is excellent and the staff are very nice. The park is well maintained, pleasant and kept clean, being open in winter is also a bonus.

Had a great day at the safari park having booked to go around it on the baboon bus. This is a much better option than taking your own car as the driver's talk around the park is fascinating as he recalls the names of the animals and interesting facts about each species and where they live. Learnt so much that we'd have missed on our own, and the ropes on the side of the minibus had the baboons swinging around which was so funny. Would definitely recommend booking this if visiting.

What a great day out with the husband and 8 year old daughter. Firstly for the price brilliant £20 for all of us. Secondly the car safari and foot safari are brilliant. The baboons what can I say we laughed but I think it was because it wasn’t our car. The entire day was fabulous thank you. The park itself if worth the visit with so much to see and do.

We had the most amazing time today, Santa was fabulous! He was so attentive to alll the children (teenagers too) presents were great. The winter wonderland was beautiful such a festive walk and we were so close to the sleeping tiger!! Toasting marshmallows at the the end was such a lovely idea - thank you to the whole team for a wonderful afternoon :)

Knowsley Safari Park – A Safari Park In England

Are you visiting England and looking for something unusual to do? Want to get up close and personal with baboons? If you are interested in an exciting day out and seeing animals run wild, then Knowsley Safari Park near Liverpool is the perfect place. Here, we will share everything you need about this safari park in England.

About Knowsley Safari Park

Knowsley Safari Park is exactly as the name implies – a safari park. However, it’s not your ordinary safari park. At Knowsley Safari Park, you can drive your vehicle through the park and get up close highly close to the wildlife. They are so close that some will mount your car if you choose to drive through the baboon encounter!

In England, this safari park is a part of the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA). It’s a well-known attraction situated in Prescot, England. Knowsley Safari’s primary goal is to conserve different animal species and research them. Knowsley Safari also participates in preservation projects. The park is in northern England, close to Chester, Liverpool, and Manchester universities.

Knowsley Safari Park’s History

The founders are Jimmy Chipperfield and Edward Stanley. They opened the park in 1971.  The original drive was 3.5 miles through the park when it first opened.  Tourists can drive by lions, elephants, antelope, giraffes, and zebras. After a while, the park became popular among tourists, and because of this, the drive route was extended by 1.5 miles. Since 1973, additional animals have been added, and visitors can observe camels, rhinoceros, buffalo, and tigers. It’s now the longest safari drive in England.

As the park evolved, it added new attractions.  For example, there are two baboon sections – self-drive or the Baboon Bus .

Knowsley Safari Park Animals

Knowsley Safari aims to help people get closer to the animals.  There are approximately 500 animals within. One of the most popular is the baboons. They are so popular because they jump on your car if you ride through their enclosure in your vehicle.

And I can tell you from experience that they WILL damage your vehicle. I’ve been many times, and if you make it through the baboon enclosure only missing a windscreen wiper, you should consider yourself lucky. I have lost windscreen wipers, a side mirror, and an antenna!

Then there’s the fact that they might flash you, so if you have children be prepared to explain anatomy!

About The Baboons

These animals are considered to be in a group of the biggest primates. They have been living on the planet for about 2 million years already! Five species of baboons exist now:

The size of baboons varies by species. Generally, these primates live 30 years. Baboons are not endangered, but the anthropogenic impact might cause a population decline.

Self Drive The Baboon Enclosure

This, people, is where you will experience the baboons jumping on your car and will pull off a piece or two. If this concerns you, you can opt to take the Baboon Bus.

Baboon

Take The Baboon Bus

Many people want to lose a piece of their car, so Knowsley introduced the car-friendly route, the Baboon Bus.

If you take the bus, you don’t have a car or are worried about your vehicle becoming damaged. You can book a seat on the Baboon Bus for just £6.50 per person on top of the standard admission price.

Amur Tigers

Endangered tigers inhabit the eastern parts of Russia and can also be found in China. They have thick pale orange fur that is covered with dark stripes. Tigers roam long distances, hunting for food. However, the natural habitat of these animals suffers from agricultural expansion and logging. These factors cause population decline.

In Knowsley Safari Park, you will meet two Amur Tigers –  Sinda and Miron, who came to participate in the tiger breeding programs. A special drive with tigers was opened for tourists in 2018. The territory is equipped with small forests, streams, and ponds.

White Rhinos

The white rhino is the biggest of all rhinoceros. White rhinoceros possess a huge, strong bodies with a small neck. Their heads are big, and their natural habitat is savannah or grassland. Rhinos consume grass and drink water two times per day. These animals also like to rest in mud pits because it helps cool their bodies.

White Rhino

Knowsley Safari Park possesses the biggest white rhino group for breeding. It is considered to be the largest and the most successful in Europe . As you drive through the park, you get to observe them.

Almost extinct, with an estimated 140 left in the wild, this is a rare opportunity to see these antelopes. These antelopes are distinct because of their striking reddish-brown coat with black-and-white markings or white-yellow stripes.

These animals have two horns, spiraling slightly. The natural habitat is tropical jungles. Bongos like to consume roots, grass, and leaves. The greatest danger for them is deforestation and hunting, which have caused the population to decline to near extinction.

You can see bongos while driving by the sixth zone of the African Savannah route.

Other Animals

In addition to the baboons, tigers, and bongo, there are lions, emu camels, giraffes, elephants, meerkats,s and many other species.

Animal Experiences

If you’ve ever dreamed of getting close to a giraffe or wanting to feed a meerkat its breakfast, then the Animal Experiences are just the adventure you’re looking for!

How To Get To Knowsley Safari Park

Knowsley Safari is in Prescot, not that far from Liverpool. There are various ways to get there:

It’s one of the most convenient ways to get to the park and the most fun! After all, if you arrive by car, you can drive through the baboon enclosure and the lion enclosure.

If you don’t have your own vehicle, it’s an excellent option to book a 9-seater car hire in Liverpool , especially when you bring friends! It takes only 14 minutes to drive there from John Lennon Airport. If you need to have your luggage with you, try a 9-seater minibus hire in Liverpool.

The route is quite simple. From A561 Speke Road, turn to Knowsley Expressway, and then lead to M57. When you get there, leave the road at the second junction. Look for the signs of Knowsley Safari, situated by the roundabout, and you will reach the park.

The road from the center of Prescot to Knowsley Safari Park takes 12-15 minutes. You can walk the footpath that will lead you straight to the main gates of the park.

Not wrecked, but if you enter the baboon enclosure, you will lose an antenna, potentially a mirror, or windscreen wipers. The baboons are notorious for ripping pieces of cars off.

It’s a five-mile safari drive that takes about an hour to drive. You are not limited to one drive; you can go around the park as often as you like.

Pets can not be brought to Knowsley Safari Park. The only exception is for Service Dogs.

The best time is around 10 am during the summer weekends when the schools are out. Or, go when the kids are in school!

Closing Thoughts

Knowsley Safari Park is one of the most unusual days out in England. Kids absolutely love it! Even though you might have to replace an element of your car, it’s worth it. There’s nothing quite like a baboon that’s showing off its lower regions while taunting you as it tears off the windscreen wiper.

The lions at the park are huge, and when you drive through their enclosure, they will come up to the cars, so keep your windows closed! Now you know that there is a  safari park in England, add it to your list of “must-dos.”

Knowsley Safari Park Review (Beware The Baboons!)

knowsley safari baboon bus

We were very lucky on our recent family weekend break  to Liverpool to be invited to Knowsley Safari for a day out. None of us had been to Knowsley Safari Park before, so this was an amazing new experience for us to share together.  Daddy didn’t even realise that safari parks even existed in this country so it really was an eye opener for him.

We arrived at the park when it opened and were given our arrangements for the day and the time we had to join the Knowsley Safari Baboon Bus by the meet and greet staff.  As we weren’t going to be joining the bus until 12pm, we decided we would drive around Knowsley Safari first to find out what it was like.  I’m so glad we did, as being one of the first cars around the park was a real advantage.

Meet The Lions

If you are planning a visit to Knowsley Safari Park I really would urge you to get there as soon as the gates open and head straight to the safari.  The benefit of doing this is you get to see the lions right up close and personal, so to speak.

Lions at Knowsley Safari Park

Lots To See

Around the park there are so many animals to see that to make the most of your visit we would recommend going around twice at least.  They have a vast collection of all different kinds of animals from zebras, giraffes , peacocks, elephants and rhinoceroses.  The park contains around 700 species of animal all together over 550 acres of safari park and I’m pretty sure we saw nearly all of them.

Indie seemed to enjoy the sea lions the most, and the fact she could see them from under the water really added to her experience.  I lost count of the times she went up and down the steps to see them from all the different angles  she could in the pool.

Sea Lions At Knowsley Safari

Beware the Baboons

Knowsley Safari Park has a a very large collection of Baboons in residence.  When we drove round the park ourselves we decided to take the Baboon safe route.  We valued our windscreen wipers, especially as we were going to be driving 2 hours back to Nottingham after the weekend and we know baboons aren’t shy about pulling things off cars.  We knew we would get to see them when we caught the baboon bus later.

These cheeky primates have quite a reputation you see.  They are famous for stealing windscreen wipers, England flags, number plates and pretty much anything they can pull off a car.  They are also known for using the odd moving vehicle as a toilet.  We saw this in progress, so I can completely vouch for it.

They are amazing creatures, but when they see a car they think it’s playtime.  When we were about to enter their enclosure on the Baboon bus, we saw a women get out of her car, and stick her windscreen wipers down with masking tape.  Now, you remember those lions I mentioned at the beginning of the post?  Firstly, it really isn’t a good idea to get out of your car whilst at the safari, and secondly masking tape really isn’t going to make a jot of difference.

baboons at knowsley safari park

It’s definitely worth taking the Baboon bus at Knowsley Safari Park for lots of reasons.  The guide gave us lots of interesting facts about all the animals that live at Knowsley Safari, which we all really enjoyed.  You can use the guide your given on entry too, but I must say I prefer someone to point things out and talk to you, they often have stories you don’t find in the tour guide.

The main reason though is that the Baboon bus is a great way to see the Baboons and keep your car in one piece.  There are ropes hanging from the bus that the Baboons catch and climb up, but they aren’t shy about using the windscreen wipers either.

This was such a fun experience, and our 3 year old thought it was very amusing watching the baboons jump onto the bus.  She thought it was even more amusing when one wee’d down the windscreen.  These baboons know no shame.  I really can’t recommend the Baboon bus enough.

We Met Ben & Holly Too

During our visit, Ben & Holly were visiting Knowsley Safari too.  They were having meet and greets with their fans through out the day.  Now, we couldn’t miss this as Indie loves the show.  She kept reminding us that she’d seen them at the theatre , and was very excited to meet the in person.  Just look at this happy little face…

Recommendation

We had an amazing visit to Knowsley Safari and would recommend a visit for anyone coming to Liverpool.  It really does have something for everyone.  The have a play park for the children to enjoy, restaurants and picnic areas too.

They have a really flexible pricing structure so that you can enjoy the park in the best way that suits you.  Entry starts at just £17.50 and under 3’s are free.  Baboon Bus tickets are £5.50 per person.  It really is great value for money.

We were provided with complimentary tickets to Knowsley Safari Park in exchange for this post, but all thoughts and opinions are our own.

We’ve been a couple of times. Last time was last Xmas. It was our 3yr old 1st time, she liked it until we went to see the lions and monkeys, we went. All she can remember is one of them jumping up at our door and opening our side door.

Oops. They really are cheeky monkey’s aren’t they. Did you have the door locked? They are pretty strong aren’t they

We will next time!! As it opened slightly.

That must have been pretty scary. I hope it doesn’t put you off going. We really had a great day. The Baboon bus is a great way to keep your car in tact 🙂

this looks so fun!! so you can drive around the park on your own? the lions don’t damage the cars?

Yep, you can drive around on your own. There are rangers around making sure people don’t do anything silly like open car windows for photo’s. It’s not the lions you have to worry about, it’s the baboons!

It looks such an amazing place to visit! It must be so great to get so close to the animals! It sounds like you had a lot of fun! Great photos x

Thanks Kim, it was amazing. We really enjoyed. It was a much better experience than going to a zoo x

I can vouch for the Baboons liking number plates, we had ours snatched off a few years ago, not that we minded as the children loved every minute of it, but if you are worried about losing something from your car the Baboon bus sounds ideal!

We went in early like you and saw the lions close up, a brilliant if slightly nerve wracking experience!

What a great price for such a good day out. It is wonderful being able to be so close to such magnificent creatures. And to meet Ben and Holly too. I’m glad you all enjoyed it.

Oh wow this place looks amazing!! I am going to have to take Boo – she loves monkeys at the minute. And I am really pleasantly surprised by the prices too!

I love Safari parks; it might be the only place I will get to see some of the wild animals.

We are to go next week, and cannot wait! It looks absolutely brilliant x

5-mile safari drive

The uk's longest safari drive.

Our 550-acre Safari Drive is home to many animals from around the world. From Bactrian Camels and White Rhino to Baboons and African Lions, you can see them all as you drive around the grounds. The route is split into different continental zones where you’ll drive through many habitats and see our collection of animals along the way. Once you’ve finished your roar-some experience, you can head down to our Foot Safari - both experiences are included in your ticket!

Your adventure begins in Eastern Asia where you’ll meet our herd of Bactrian Camels whose coat sheds throughout the year, and lots of Yaks, Eastern Kiang and Père David’s Deer roaming around. In the Southern Asia area, you’ll find the Axis Deer and Eld’s Deer as well as Nilgai and Blackbuck.

Our African Savannah zone is home to one of the largest White Rhino crashes in the UK. Watch out for the world’s largest bird too, the Ostrich, as they love to come over and say hello! Can you spot the distinct markings on the Roan Antelope or the short pointed horns of the Waterbuck? Whilst driving through the African woodland, keep your eyes peeled for the Sitatunga too.

Dare to enter the monkey jungle? The most anticipated area of the Safari Drive. Hold on to your seatbelts as our Baboons steal the show. They’ll come right up to your car so, if you’d prefer, our car-friendly route will allow you to watch from afar. If you still want the full mischievous experience, why not book the Baboon Bus?

African Lions

Our Safari Drive takes you through Lion Country, allowing you to watch the pride without a fence between them and your vehicle!

African Lions

White Rhino

White Rhino are one of the most endangered animals on the planet. They are often hunted for their horn.

White Rhino

European Bison

Bison can be found in North America and Northern Europe. The European Bison were once extinct in the wild.

European Bison

In the wild, a Baboon troop can number between 20 and 100! Their ranges vary considerably depending on food availability.

Baboons

A real highlight of the Safari Drive is meeting the Pride of Knowsley in the lion enclosure where our pride of African Lions roam around. See for yourself!

The beauty of the Safari Drive is that it's different every time you drive through and the best part is, you can go around as many times as you like!

Warning infographic incase of a breakdown

It's important to us that our guests and animals stay safe so we ask all guests to follow our rules of entry. Our animals behave as close to the wild as possible and can be unpredictable, so you should stay inside your car at all times. If you break down while on the safari drive it is important that all passengers stay within the car, you should sound your horn and wait for a patrol vehicle to come to your assistance.

Our safari drive is full of wild animals who can act unpredictably at times and we are not able to accept any responsibility for damage caused by our baboons within their enclosure. If you would prefer not to take this risk then why not take our car-friendly route or even hop on our Baboon Bus.

Guests are strictly prohibited from feeding the animals – that’s our job! If you are seen feeding the animals from your vehicle you will be asked to leave.

Dogs are not allowed in any areas of Knowsley Safari. This includes both the Safari Drive and also the pedestrian areas of the Foot Safari.

We do however provide basic accommodation for your dog should you wish to bring them on your trip.

Our kennels provide basic accommodation for your pet. Drinking water is available but we do not provide water bowls or blankets. Please feel free to bring with you any items that will make your pet as comfortable as possible. A £5.00 refundable padlock is available at reception on arrival.

We are famous for our drive-through Baboon enclosure but did you know that you can watch their antics from a safe distance if you’re not quite brave enough to venture in? You can take our car-friendly route which still gives you fantastic views of our cheeky residents.

If you fancy the thrill of the Baboons without any of the risk then try our baboon bus. You can book your seats online and you’ll be driven the whole way round the safari as well as through the baboon enclosure.

Baboon bus rules

Visited Knowsley safari park as part of a hen party as our bride loves zoos, we hired the baboon bus and have to say this made our trip, Nick our driver was brilliant, he told us at the beginning that he wasn't a tour guide but would give us a few tid bits as we went round, he seriously sold himself short he was brilliant. Not all of us had been zoo fans before but we had a brilliant day at the park, despite the rain we had a fantastic day and would definitely visit again.

We visited the Park for the second time and this time during a cold and rainy day. It still was absolutely exceptional. Most of the animals were outside and quiet close to the roads and cars. The camels munched on the mirrors and the Baboons played with the wipers. Absolutely fantastic day out with the kids as there is also lots to see by foot (Seals, Giraffes, Birds, Bats etc.)

Visited 30th January, cold and windy, drove round the safari first, we were worried that most of the animals may be hidden because of the wind, not the case at all, we were early just after half ten, tigers by the fence, wolf on patrol, camels and plenty of deer/antelope type animals, the kids, aged 4 and 8 were excited and amazed, the excitement got better in lion section, lions right upto the car, rolling in the road and play fighting, brilliant. Then the big decision, do we drive through the baboon enclosure or take the car friendly route. We decided to risk it, asking the ranger to remove our aerial before we entered. Round we went, baboons riding on the bonnet like princesses in a carnival parade, the kids excitement had now reached fever pitch, one baboon took great pleasure in trying to nibble the windscreen washers from the bonnet, luckily they failed, whilst another managed to twist my rear wiper right round so it was facing the floor, we found it hilarious, though the car in front had their windows cracked and it's occupants were feeding the baboons something despite notices strictly saying not to, I reported it to the rangers on the way out, who shot off in their truck into the enclosure. On we continued and round to the rhinos, the kids couldn't believe how big they were. Outside of the safari we really enjoyed the sea lion show, it was indoors and out of the wind too, not just tricks but educational too. Most of the fairground rides were open so we let the kids have a ride or too. We didn't get to see the elephants, giraffes or birds of prey because the weather took a turn for the worse with snow and hail, and living the other side of the pennines reluctantly decided to head for home. All in all we had a fab time, the price was a bargain with free kids, we will be back.

Couldn't recommend this place more! Great in every single way, great staff and great animals lots of activities for the kids too. Great all round.

Take yourself some confortable shoes and/or a lot of money. Basically, this is a tiring experience. Everything appears to be too far apart and to get to locations you either walk or take a train. Wwhich ofcourse you have to pay for and its not cheap. If you decide to walk it, you are soon hot, bothered, tired and hungry. To compound it all you probably haven't seen much because you don't know where you are going and getting lost. Sound familiar? There are some food stalls which serve alcohol as well. There are also some grassy areas to sit and rest. I went in the summer so it was pretty hot. There are some good animals to see but the big cats were difficult as usual. They were either hiding or too shy and you'd catch a glimpse of one in the distance etc or spend hours running around to try and get a better view which you never get. It's good for kids etc because you need a whole day for this, but bring loads of money coz they charge for everything.

Thank you for your review, however I believe this is a review of an alternative zoological collection as our walkaround area is compact and accessible for all and we do not have a train that takes guests to different locations, ours gives visitors a tour of our Equatorial Trail exhibit.

Brill day out fantastic things to do. Have been here a few times now and it never fails to deliver Well worth the money and great memories too
