Travel + Leisure / Anna Popp

Safeguarding your valuables is extremely important when you’re traveling to a new destination, so consider investing in a purse with travel-friendly features. While functionality is important, a travel purse can also be stylish and versatile to pair with any outfit.

Travel + Leisure editors are frequent-fliers and experts in styling travel accessories with limited wardrobes on the go. I asked my fellow travel editors to share their favorite purses they own and love, and they delivered a variety of functional and fashionable recommendations. From designer shoulder bags to packable crossbodies, there are styles for every type of traveler on this list.

July Everyday Crescent Bag

I’m a big fan of July luggage , so I had to try their crescent bag on a trip to Greece. It was versatile enough to use for hiking, sightseeing, and going out to dinner, and I loved the adjustable strap for wearing it as a crossbody or shoulder bag. I took the purse on a 7-mile hike and the main compartment is big enough to fit three 16-ounce water bottles along with all my other essentials like a wallet, sunscreen, and a baseball cap. This bag also got shoved under multiple airplane seats (we had six flights in total) during the trip and the canvas material held up perfectly without any marks or stains.

Quince Italian Leather Crossbody Bag

Quince is one the best places to buy high-quality travel accessories that won’t break the bank. Their Italian Leather Crossbody Bag is the perfect size for storing the essentials since it’s spacious yet compact. Considering it’s made with genuine leather, the price is so good that you might want to pick up more than one of the eight color options available.

“It’s roomy without feeling oversized and compact without feeling too small — as Goldilocks would say, it’s just right,” senior commerce editor Emily Belfiore shared. “I love the adjustable crossbody strap, which I ended up tightening for a more secure fit to make it drape closer to my body, and that it comes in so many luxe textures and colors. I actually overheard someone walk by me and say ‘I love her bag.’”

All Saints Blake Shoulder Bag

Nordstrom Rack

This spacious satchel from All Saints is the ideal size for travelers looking for a little extra space when they’re on the go. For all-day adventures, this bag can store sunscreen, water bottles, a book, and more without having to lug around a tote bag or backpack. The white or black leather material and chain detailing makes this bag much cuter than an average fanny back, too.

“I can't travel with a tiny purse because I need to fill my bag with sunglasses, hand sanitizer, sunscreen, 10 lipgloss options, and more — let's just say I'm an overpacker,” commerce testing editor Jackie Cucco admitted. “I bought this bag the second I saw it because it's big enough to fit more than just the essentials, but it also sits relatively flat against the body, so it won't add bulk while you're out and about.”

Prada Re-edition 2005 Re-nylon and Saffiano Mini Bag

Saks Fifth Avenue

Bring a little piece of Italy with you wherever you go with Prada’s iconic Re-nylon and Saffiano Mini Bag. Made with flexible recycled nylon fabric, this purse is more packable than a structured leather bag, and it still offers plenty of storage space. The designer bag can be dressed down with jeans during the day or dressed up with a dress and heels at night, making it particularly versatile for traveling.

“It's the perfect small, but not too small, handbag that can fit my phone, hotel keys, wallet, lip gloss, and other knick knacks without feeling too bulky on my shoulder,” T+L senior commerce editor Jasmine Grant said. “The nylon fabric is perfect because it not only repels liquid and stains, but it also easily tucks into my suitcase, and I never have to worry about it getting crushed or damaged.”

Uniqlo Round Mini Shoulder Bag

Crescent bags are all the rage when it comes to travel purse styles, especially this one from Uniqlo that you may have already seen on your social media feed. It has tons of room to store wallets, passports, sunscreen, and more. When you’re not using it, the bag can be folded up and stored in a suitcase. Plus, it’s hard to beat the affordable price for such a stylish and practical purse.

“I was influenced to buy this after seeing it all over social media, and I have since bought three more,” T+L updates writer Anne Taylor gushed. “You can make the design go with pretty much any outfit depending on the color you buy and I love that it feels secure and sturdy. You can also fit so much stuff inside.”

Travel + Leisure / Abigail Moore

Shinola The Mini Bixby Basket Bag

The best part about this woven bag from Detroit-based brand Shinola is that it comes with an adjustable and removable crossbody strap, which means the purse can be styled in multiple ways. For dressier occasions, it has tote straps to carry it as a handbag, or you can attach the longer strap for a more casual daytime outfit. No matter which way you wear the purse, we love that it has a privacy flap in addition to the magnetic closure for safeguarding the items packed inside.

“I've been sporting this adorable basket bag for the past few weeks and I swear that I have never been complimented more on an accessory,” T+L commerce writer Ali Domrongchai said. “Beyond its aesthetics, this bag is surprisingly spacious and features adjustable straps for comfortable carrying as a shoulder bag, crossbody, or handbag. Plus, it's designed with a magnetic flap that covers and keeps your belongings secure.”

lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag 1L

There’s a reason why the Lululemon Belt Bag is constantly out of stock: it makes the perfect travel bag. The sporty sling bag can fit travel essentials like passports, wallets, earbuds, snacks, and more all in the main compartment. The material is also featherlight, so it won’t weigh you down while sightseeing or dashing through an airport.

“I love how easy this bag makes it to go hands-free when traveling and I literally bring it everywhere with me, from the pool or beach out to brunch and walking around the city. It allows me to take just what I want to have with me when I'm out and about without being bulky, plus it's cute enough to blend well with most of my daytime outfits, too,” commerce editor Sophie Mendel said, giving the belt bag her travel-editor stamp of approval.

Kaai Mini Bowler Bag

This leather camera bag-style purse came with me on a girls trip and I got so many compliments throughout the weekend. The leather material is sleek and stylish, and the square shape of the bag makes it easy to pack a range of items from lip balm to sunglasses. It has an adjustable crossbody strap to style it across the body or keep it shortened as a shoulder bag. My favorite part is the magnetic slip pocket in the back for accessing a phone or plane tickets easily while still being protected in the back of the purse.

Baggu Mini Nylon Shoulder Bag

I’m not saying packable bags are superior to structured purses, but it’s a lot easier to bring multiple bags on a trip if the material is flexible like this Baggu bag. The nylon fabric makes it easy to fold the bag into a compact size, and it’s also easy to keep the bag clean. Oh, and did we mention it’s machine washable, too?

“I love this Baggu shoulder bag for traveling — the nylon material is practically begging to be shoved into the depths of my backpack and it always comes out looking as good as new,” senior writer Merrell Readman gushed. “I love the adjustable shoulder strap that is comfortable to wear, and the primary compartment has plenty of space for everything from my headphones and wallet to a mini umbrella.”

MZ Wallace Metro Quatro Tote

For maximizing space while traveling, this spacious MZ Wallace tote bag is your best option. Find yourself at a flea market in Paris? Buy one too many shoes while shopping on Oxford Street? This tote is plenty big enough to store all of your purchases without having to lug around shopping bags. It’s also much more stylish than other tote bags on the market and it comes with a removable crossbody strap as an extra helpful touch.

“MZ Wallace’s organizational features are second to none and this bag has four outer slip pockets and two outer zip pockets in addition to that main compartment. It’s surprisingly roomy; I appreciate both the additional zipper pocket inside and the pouch on a leash where I can easily find smaller items without rooting around inside,” associate editorial director Morgan Ashley Parker raved. “While I used to always bring a just-in-case cotton tote when traveling, this is now my go-to since it’s easy to pack but also has a zipper top so I know my things are safe inside.”

Tumi Persia Crossbody

If you’re not a fan of belt bags, this compact crossbody is a great alternative. It’s about the size of a fanny pack, but it has a slimmer vertical design with a top zipper and multiple compartments. The bag has a discreet pocket on the back to keep a phone hidden but easily accessible for directions or answering calls. Tumi also offers free monogramming with up to three characters as an extra special touch.

“It fits an incredible amount for its size — like my phone, wallet, passport, earbuds, a snack, and even my Kindle. I converted to this from a belt bag because there’s no risk of everything toppling out if I bend over with the bag unzipped (which has unfortunately happened to me with a belt bag worn across my chest) and I love the easy access of the zippered front pocket for cash and the back slip pocket to tuck in my phone and ID,” Parker said.

Radley London Sloane Street Medium Ziptop Shoulder

Radley London

While shoulder bags aren’t typically spacious, this one from Radley London is deceptively large without compromising a compact design for traveling. The leather purse can fit more than just the typical travel items, (wallet, earbuds, passport, etc.) which makes it the perfect option for travelers looking for a fashionable and functional handbag.

“The key to a travel purse is whether or not it can fit the essentials; for me, that means my wallet, a small bag of toiletries like lip gloss and perfume, and a book,” commerce editor Taylor Fox said. “I was shocked to discover that this dainty and stylish bag actually fits all of those items (including most paperbacks and smaller hardcover books). The bag also features small interior pockets to keep organized and both a zipper and clip closure to keep your items extra secure.”

Tips for Buying a Travel Purse

Know your storage and organization needs.

There are tons of different styles of packing purses, so you’ll want to opt for the size and design that fits your needs best. Over-packers (like me) should opt for a larger purse like a tote or spacious crossbody bag. Minimalist or carry-on-only travelers can get by with a belt bag or compact phone purse. If you bring a larger bag on a trip, you may want to invest in some travel pouches for extra organization for more packed items.

Consider portability

If you want to bring more than one purse on a trip, we recommend bringing a few packable options made from nylon or canvas. Purses made of fabric (versus leather) will be easier to fold down and pack in a carry-on or tote bag, which offers you variety in bag styles on a trip.

Think about anti-theft protection

Pickpocketing and theft are, unfortunately, just part of the risks of traveling. Some helpful anti-theft features in a purse include discrete zippers, hidden compartments, and anti-slash fabric. Purses with a crossbody strap are also more secure, since they can't be taken off as easily as a shoulder strap or handbag.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on the airplane regulations when it comes to in-cabin luggage, but a purse can usually count as a personal item if you also have a duffel, tote, or carry-on. Most airlines offer different luggage requirements depending on your seat class, so you’ll want to double-check before trying to board with too many items. Since most purses can fit underneath a seat, it can certainly be counted as a personal item.

Most of the time, a purse will come with manufacturer instructions on how to clean a purse. Some materials like leather or suede require higher maintenance for upkeep, but if the material is nylon or canvas, it can likely be spot-cleaned with a bit of water and soap.

That’s where the Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L steps in.

Crafted from recycled weatherproof nylon canvas, this bag is exceptionally engineered to protect your gear, maximize storage space, and keep you organized on the road. 25 Best Travel Purses That Are Actually Stylish

By Brigitt Earley and Paula Lee

best travel purses multiple bags on a background

Your go-to tote bags and carryalls may be perfect for every day, but when you’re on the road, the best travel purses can make a world of a difference. Dedicated travel bags come in all shapes and sizes— fanny packs , laptop backpacks , cross-bodies , work totes , anti-theft purses, and more—but generally feature multiple compartments (hi, mesh pocket) to keep your essentials organized, a usually convertible or detachable strap that’s comfortable enough to wear all day, and even anti-theft features to secure your things against pickpockets.

If this sounds like the stereotypical tourist bag with a less-than-flattering design, though, you’re in for a pleasant surprise. Tumi calls this the Just in Case backpack, because you can fold it flat and stash it in your suitcase—just in case you need extra space to bring a few souvenirs home. Travel Handbags: 7 Best Travel Purses

Picture a glorious spring day in Paris.

I’m sitting in a café with my friend Susanne. She loops the strap of her handbag over the back of her chair. You know the gesture – you’ve probably done it a hundred times.

She’ll never see that handbag again.

Historical photograph of a Paris café - women carrying their best purse for travel abroad

There are things you do with your traveling hand ba – and then there are things you don’t do, like loop it over the back of your chair.

But before we get into the  how  of handbag handling, let’s look at the  what.  What follows are the best travel handbags for women (at least, I think so!)

THE BEST TRAVEL HANDBAGS FOR LADIES – A BUYER’S GUIDE AND COMPARISON CHART

The 7 best travel purse options .

The table above lists the best traveling handbags for women – but it’s just an outline. I’ve expanded on a few individual models below because yes, you need the best travel purse ever.

How do you find great ladies travel handbags and which is the best travel handbag for you?

Standard-sized travel purse for women

If you need something to fit all of the essentials in but isn’t cumbersome to carry around on your travels then I’ve got some excellent options for you. These travel purses are the ideal size, have nifty pockets, and are anti-theft.

Baggallini Womens Everywhere Bagg Hobo Bag, Midnight Blossom

  • Don’t let the rain keep you from exploring. This Baggallini crossbody is also a stylish travel purse, light and water-resistant, so you can take advantage of wet travel days without worrying about your valuables and electronics getting drenched
  • It comes with a removable RFID-resistant wallet you can pull out of the middle of the bag. For me, this feels safer than having an outside zippered pocket for my cards.
  • It has oodles of pockets (including one for a water bottle or umbrella), and wonderful color options if you happen to be tired of your basic brown, grey or black travel handbag. That all makes it one of the best purses for traveling in Europe (or anywhere else) when youre looking for more of an urban vibe.

Travelon Women's Anti-Theft Tailored Hobo, Sapphire, 13.25 x 9 x 3.75

  • Anything I say about this bag is going to be heavily biased... because this is my all-time favorite of all crossbody purses – my best purse for international travel!
  • I have two of these, in different colors and sizes. This slightly more compact version has a few extra goodies, like a front zipper that secures under a little loop, a feature I love.
  • Like most Pacsafe bags, it’s slash-proof, which gives me extra peace of mind in busy city centers, and the pocket with credit card slots features RFID-blocking technology.
  • My iPad fits perfectly in the CS200, but the Gii is much roomier: if you have a DSLR, it will easily fit. I carry my Macbook Air in it. So I use the CS200 for daily sightseeing, but the Gii if Im working.
  • The bag itself is a lightweight travel purse: you can fill it without feeling like youve overpacked. I have traveled all over the world with this, which is why it is my go-to as one of the best handbags for travelling oversea

Timbuk2 Classic Messenger Bag, Eco Amber, X-Small

  • Im not sure I would normally include this among shoulder bags for women – it is more of a messenger bag than an anti-theft purse but... Ive added it to the list because I bought one myself (small size) and used it for a month as I traveled through Eastern Europe. Had I gone for the large I might have even used it as a carry-on.
  • It has a waterproof flap (rain-tested in Romania by me), enough pockets to keep me happy, especially the external one (which is not available in the XS size). The key strap was also useful given the two cavernous main compartments. Plus compartments for pens, and an internal water bottle.
  • I absolutely loved this bag! The wide shoulder strap is so comfortable I loaded the Timbuk2 with plenty – but my back was fine at the end of each day. Im still addicted to my Pacsafes, but this one gets as many kudos from me.

Small travel purse options – the best travel handbags for Europe

The above four are ‘normal-sized’ travel shoulder bags and will carry pretty much anything you need, even though some bags are smaller than others.

BUT –  you may need something smaller . If you’re flying within Europe or on a discount airline, you may find you’re only allowed a single carry-on, handbag included.

The best handbag for flying is a small travel handbag: you can slip it into your carry-on if you’re not allowed a second bag on the flight.

The best small travel purse is the one you’re allowed to take with you on the plane!

Pacsafe Metrosafe LS100 ECONYL 3 Liter Anti Theft Crossbody/Shoulder Bag - Fits 7 inch Tablet, ECONYL Black

  • Here I go with Pacsafe again! The Metrosafe LS100 is a popular anti-theft bag and among the best travel purses for Europe, safe and stylish, if youre looking for something small and discreet.
  • Its smaller and more compact than its counterparts, but you still get all the great anti-theft features (RFID-blocking pocket, locking zippers, and slash-proof fabric) Pacsafe is famous for.
  • Its also water resistant, which makes it ideal for autumn wear in Europe when the skies open up. Its not large, but you can fit a lot into it – most of what you need for the day. No laptop but you can fit in a mini tablet. I like mine – I unfortunately have one of the older versions and dont like the wine color but these new tints are much nicer.

Travelon Women's Anti-theft Classic Mini Shoulder Bag Sling Tote, Wine

  • Travelon bags are much-loved for their anti-theft properties and their affordable price. This is one of the more popular small travel bags: it holds everything you really need (passport, phone, credit cards), and encourages (or maybe forces) you to leave the extras at the hotel. This makes it a great purse for European travel.
  • Both the strap and purse body are made of slash-proof mesh, the straps and zippers lock, and the inner compartment blocks RFID thieves. And I know you could buy an LED light anywhere, but I love that this travelling purse comes with one attached. This is an ideal lightweight travel handbag to slip into your luggage or use for the basics - passport, money, cards, phone...

Travelon Anti-theft Heritage Crossbody Bag, Pewter

  • This looks like a rather fun little travel purse for ladies and one of the few on this list I havent tried for myself. But I probably shall.
  • Its an anti-theft cross-body bag, so has everything going for it in a travel handbag for women, with a steel cable in the strap and anti-slash protection on the sides.
  • Its an anti-theft cross-body bag, so has everything youd want in a travel handbag for women, with a steel cable in the strap and anti-slash protection on the sides. It also has RFID blocking for both the lined internal pocket and the outside locking pocket.
  • This is a small bag for such things as your glasses, papers, phone, keys and the like, and will also hold a small iPad. The strap is adjustable and the exterior is water resistant so rain or shine, your things will be protected. ~

AND HERE’S ONE THAT ISN’T QUITE A TRAVEL HANDBAG…

Pacsafe Metrosafe LS350 15 Liter Anti Theft Laptop Daypack/Backpack - with Padded 13" Laptop Sleeve, Adjustable Shoulder Straps, Patented Security Technology, Black

  • For those of you who prefer daypacks to womens handbags for travel (youll find a selection of great travel daypacks here), this is a sleek, frills-free anti theft backpack that will fit everything you need for a day trip and comes in red, teal and black. It features a couple of pockets and a padded electronic sleeve: just be aware that laptops larger than 13” probably won’t fit inside them.
  • It’s not particularly stylish, but you’d be able to wear it around both urban and rural areas without raising eyebrows.
  • And it has the usual Pacsafe safety features, including the stainless steel wire mesh in the fabric and the wire-reinforced straps, turn and lock security hooks on zippers, and an RFID blocking pocket and main compartment. If youre keen on a theft-proof backpack, this is probably as close as youre going to get.

BEST TRAVEL HANDBAGS FOR WOMEN: THE FEATURES THAT REALLY MATTER

Not all handbags for traveling abroad are made equal and there are a number of features that make good travel purses as opposed to just blah ones. When looking for the best women’s travel handbags, here’s what you should consider:

  • Pockets . Most women have suffered with a “too big” purse that seemed to devour all the contents. Good purses for travel include pockets – zippered, mesh, credit card slots – that allow you to organize and actually find everything that fits.  Click here for a really super travel handbag with compartments!
  • Space for electronics . We need space for our gadgets, including cameras, cell phones, tablets and laptops/notebooks. The perfect handbag for travel has plenty of room for all these. I need to be able to carry my 13″ Macbook Air to most places.  Click here for the perfect big travel handbag  (the larger sizes).
  • Style . A bag with some semblance of “everyday” style will help you look more local and not scream “tourist” too loudly. Designer travel bags may be a bit pricey but you’ll find plenty of cheap travel bags with lots of styles – different colors, shapes, materials, sizes.
  • Durability . Frequent travel requires a bag that will withstand all sorts of wear and tear. It doesn’t have to be leather, but it does need to be made with strong material and sturdy fasteners. Beware of shoddily made purses that can fall apart after a single trip. The best handbag for travel should last and last and last – first, because they’re well made but second, because the style is perennial and never becomes old.
  • Safety features . Being a solo female traveler comes with some risks, so having an anti-theft bag with safety features like anti-slash mesh or locking zippers can bring some peace of mind. The one thing travel handbags for women must deliver is safety for your belongings. There’s little point in carrying it around otherwise…  See the best anti theft travel hand bags for ladies .
  • Carrying options . The best purses for travel are those which you can carry multiple ways, including over-the-shoulder, across-the-body and even backpack-style (I like cross-body purses best).
  • Comfort : Since you’ll probably be toting it around with you most of the day, a good purse for traveling needs to be comfortable – think wide strap that doesn’t slip off, bag that doesn’t slap across your middle…
  • Water-resistance : This isn’t essential but the best handbags for travel should be weather-friendly, both for esthetics and because you want to keep your contents dry.  See more waterproof travelling hand bags for ladies .

HOW ESSENTIAL ARE GOOD TRAVEL HANDBAGS FOR TRAVELLING ABROAD?

Maybe not that essential. It depends.

If you’re a person who doesn’t carry much around, you may not need one. You can always stash your phone, room card and credit card in a money belt or  travel pouch , right? Or if you hate the idea of a traveling handbag, consider a travel daypack instead.

But with so many women’s travel handbags on the market, how do you know which one to get?

If you  are  a handbag person, here are a few simple questions you should ask yourself before you buy:

  • How do you  carry your handbag?  Across your chest and back, on your shoulder, or slung over your arm (not the best idea for keeping your hands free in an unfamiliar environment, by the way)…
  • How lo ng are you going for?  A small purse for traveling (or no purse at all!) might do for a short visit but if you’re off for a few weeks you’ll need a bigger handbag to travel with.
  • What kind of tra vel is involved?  If you’re staying in a central hotel or apartment, you can always leave things in your room and go back for something if you need to ( nothing too valuable though ).
  • How  often will you be using it?  Do you need it all day or is it for evening wear or work?
  • What will you carry ?  If you need your iPad and your iPhone and makeup and clumps of keys, you’ll need a different bag than if you’re slipping your phone, a pen and a Moleskine notebook into something that zips up: the best purse for travel abroad needs to fit what you intend to carry.
  • How often do you need access to your stuff?  I use my iPhone every minute or two so I’m lost without an outside pocket to slip it into.

Answering these questions will help you choose.

And if you travel often, don’t skimp on the expense. You’re better off investing in the best purse for travel now rather than buying cheap travel handbags that will unravel in the middle of nowhere – and that you’ll have to replace.

See my recommendation for the best handbag for travelling overseas!

7 TIPS TO KEEP YOUR TRAVEL HANDBAG AND ITS CONTENTS SAFE

Other than deciding on the best handbag for travlling, the most important issue you’ll have to deal with is probably security.

1. Don’t wear flashy brand name labels  on your travel hand bag: they make it that much more attractive to steal.

2. Don’t be arrogant  as in “it won’t happen to me because I’m too smart/careful/savvy” — it  can  happen to you. I’m a seasoned traveler and I’ve had my belongings lifted. It’s almost inevitable after a lifetime of travel. What I do know is without being careful, it would have happened far more often.

3. Make sure your bag is hard to get into.  Even the best travel purses for women can be stolen. That’s why I like the slash-proof straps with all sorts of wire mesh. I can still lose it and it can disappear — but it won’t be slashed while I’m wearing it and my belongings lifted from under my nose.

4. Pay attention.  The best time for someone to steal your bag is when you’re busy taking that ultimate photograph or admiring the view. You’re not paying attention and you won’t even notice: there goes your perfect handbag for traveling. I sadly speak from experience.

5. Wear your bag in a way that dissuades theft.  Most often thieves look for an easy mark. A handbag across your chest (as opposed to hanging loosely over a shoulder) will look more challenging and less appetizing.  Keep your bag on the inside rather than on the street side. Yes, there have been instances of women being dragged along by a thief on a scooter BUT seeing a well-protected bag should be pretty dissuasive. If this worries you, use a pashmina or a scarf over your shoulder. It won’t hide your bag completely but it makes it more complicated for thieves – and they like to keep things simple.

6. Never leave your bag unattended.  Obvious, right? And if you don’t want to hang onto to it tightly while trying to eat, tie it to the table. Or get one of those metal cable locks to tie your bag to your table or chair: someone else might want that perfect travel handbag you just bought. I simply keep mine on – the strap is long enough to do that comfortably.

7. Don’t carry all your valuables in your purse . Split your things up by using a  money belt  or pouch and spread your cash around various clothes pockets.

Whatever I do, I will NOT be hanging my bag on the back of a chair!

WHICH OF THESE TRAVEL PURSES WILL BECOME YOUR FAVORITE TRAVEL COMPANION?

There are some incredible travel handbags to choose from. From stylish travel handbags and durable purses to functional bags with all the pockets you could ever need — you’re bound to find your next favorite travel accessory.

Remember, don’t keep all of your valuables in one place, and never leave your handbag unattended!

Travelon Anti Theft Classic Messenger Bag

Best Travel Bags with Space for Just About Everything: Travelon Messenger Purse

I absolutely loved the Classic Messenger Bag for my trip to Europe. It was very spacious, offered RFID protection, plus it had two compartments for a water bottle and a travel size umbrella. I loved this feature!

Available in over 10 colors, this is another great anti-theft purse. It’s more spacious than the previously mentioned Anti Theft Cross Body Bag.

Unlike the Classic Cross Body bag, it also has a security feature (lockable zippers) on the outside pocket. However, I’d still recommend keeping valuables in the interior compartments.

In addition to the basics, it also will fit a paperback book, small tablet or Kindle, snacks, sunglasses, and more. Buy it here!

What Are the Special Features of an Anti-Theft Bag ?

There are special safety features found in anti-theft bags:

Slash-proof Fabric

Thin but strong wire or meshed wire built into the straps so thieves cannot cut into them. Even with the cut proof cables, slash-proof fabric and straps, the bag is relatively lightweight.

Zippers with Locking Latches

One of the most important features in all Travelon anti theft purses is their “lockable” zippers with little latches you can use to avoid pickpockets. The zippers make it more challenging to open your bag. This feature is easy to miss but absolutely essential, and it’s one of the top reasons this brand has the best travel handbags.

One thing to note is that some anti theft bag styles don’t have lockable zippers in smaller exterior pockets. Avoid putting anything of value in the front pockets. Keep things you need easy access to such as chapstick, eye drops, tissues, or some spare change, but store your wallet on the interior zipped compartment closest to your body.

Attach to Your Chair or Table while Dining

Many of the best theftproof travel bags have adjustable shoulder straps, which can be attached to a chair, table, or post using the included carabiner.

RFID Lining

Many bags have extensive RFID blocking organizational pockets and separate areas for credit cards, pens, or interior zippered pouch for money or loose change. RFID lining helps to keep credit card information from being stolen electronically.

Easy to Clean Material

As a bonus, the material is easy to clean and hard wearing, making it ideal for travel. Generally speaking, anti theft travel bags for women are made with a water-resistant nylon making it easy to clean in addition to keeping your belongings dry during light showers.

Versatility

For the most part, theftproof bags are versatile and designed with classic, if not plain, styling. They are available in neutral colors and can be worn with everyday outfits at home just as well when you’re traveling.

Many of our readers also like these travel bags to commute to and from work on public transportation, making it a worthwhile investment.

Tip: Travelers think the best travel bag for women is a cross body style as it can be worn securely across their body instead of wearing it loosely slung on their shoulder. Tip: keep your money extra safe with an RFID Secret Bra Wallet , too!

How Do I Choose the Best Purse for Travel?

The best purse for international travel may be one that has anti theft features. It’s something an individual traveler has to decide based on their comfort levels with safety.

However, the one thing that all traveling purses should have is an opening with zippers that can be securely closed. Avoid bags with wide openings or faulty clasps.

You also want to consider the weight and size of the bag as you’ll be carrying it for hours while sightseeing. Unless you’re carrying items for other people or children, avoid choosing a bag that’s too big. It should just hold your daily essentials and enough space to store a couple of layers if you’re traveling in cool weather.

Take style into consideration and remember that an outdoors backpack will look out of place in a big city. The idea is to blend in. Choose the style of bag that you would also use at home.

Brands with the Best Anti Theft Bags

There are two main brands that offer the best anti-theft travel bags for women:

Travelon anti theft bags are the most popular option for our readers. They absolutely love this brand, which is why the top selling anti theft travel purse styles are all from Travelon!

If you’re looking for the best travel bags with security features, Travelon has a wide variety of options. If you’re on the hunt for a no-frills unisex anti-theft bag, then Pacsafe might be your best bet.

For a more traditional women’s travel purse, Travelon has a large collection of styles in all shapes, colors, fabrics, and sizes.

In comparison to PacSafe, Travelon offers various options for small travel bags such as the ones shown above.

The details are what stand out the most. I particularly like the metal hardware, which makes the designs look like “regular” purses.

Where Pacsafe truly excels is its anti theft backpacks . Pacsafe offers them in various sizes, including larger carry-on styles, which open from the side to give you full access to all your belongings.

When we researched their favorites, the vast majority of readers preferred the Travelon brand over any other brand.

Are All Travelon Bags Anti Theft?

Yes, all Travelon bags anti-theft. While some of our readers do buy Pacsafe or anti-theft purses from other brands, the vast majority do prefer Travelon.

I viewed each of their entire collections and found them to be quite distinct in what they had to offer.

Watch this video for more tips on how to keep your stuff safe while traveling.

How to Use Anti-theft Travel Bags

Whether you choose to use anti-theft travel bags for women or regular purses, always follow these precautions:

  • Choose a cross body purse and always wear the strap across your body; don’t wear the strap hung over one shoulder.
  • Avoid carrying all your valuables (including your passport) in your travel purse in busy tourist areas or when attending markets or festivals.
  • Use additional anti-theft products like a bra pouch or money belt to hide the majority of your cash. Only carry the money in your wallet that you’ll need for the day. See a full listing of anti-theft products here!
  • Have your bag positioned toward the front, not against your back side.
  • Hold your purse close to you when in crowded trains or public transportation.
  • Avoid walking next to the street where your travel purse could be yanked from your arm by a motorbike or vehicle.
  • Look up scams and thefts in your travel destination. For example, search topics like “Bali scams” or “Tourist theft risks in London.”

The Benefits of Anti-theft Travel Purses

No matter which destination you’re traveling to, safety should always be a top priority. Anti theft slash proof bags can help protect your belongings by making it more difficult for thieves to rip your bag or cut the strap.

  • In Paris: A traveler shared a story of seeing someone’s entire purse get slashed from the bottom. Everything fell out, allowing the thieves to grab it and run.
  • In Tanzania: A volunteer was mugged for her purse with a knife (in which case it doesn’t matter what type of purse you have – just hand it over).
  • In Madrid: An expat had her belongings stolen when walking home late at night.
  • In Southeast Asia: It’s common for thieves on motorbikes to drive past you and cut or rip the strap of your travel purse from your arm, in some cases, dragging you with them. Read one traveler’s story here.

While there are reports of thefts from travelers, there is a much higher number of people who’ve never experienced anything even close to these scary situations.

These stories are not meant to scare you. That’s the last thing I want you to feel — the world is a much safer place than we give it credit for. It’s good to be well-informed and cautious, but please don’t feel paranoid.

Fortunately, in many years of full time travel, I’ve never had my travel bag, purse, or any other belongings stolen (so far).

So, while theft does occur, it shouldn’t deter you from enjoying your travels.

Where Can I Buy an Anti Theft Purse or Travel Bag?

You can find theft proof bag brands in travel stores or department stores, but we prefer Amazon as it’s easy to shop and you can usually find the best deals, too!

The Travelon Crossbody Bag in black is the most popular anti theft purse for travel! You can buy it on Amazon .

So, What Is the Best Travel Purse? Do You Really Need an Anti-Theft Bag?

Ultimately, whether you need an anti-theft bag is up to your personal comfort level. Some travelers feel more confident in knowing they have their belongings secured while others are perfectly comfortable with their regular handbag.

Pick pockets tend to target busy tourist areas in large cities all over the world; some female travelers feel safer with an anti theft purse vs. a regular purse.

The best travel purses are the ones that give you the most confidence. Being a confident traveler who’s vigilant and aware of her surroundings is one of the best ways to stay safe.

I’ve been traveling for the past four months using a Travelon bag exclusively. It’s the Anti-Theft Tailored Hobo in black. It’s been very sturdy and very easy to use. Sometimes I have it full to the brim, and other times not so much. However, the one ding I’ll give it is that the pattern of the mesh webbing inside (to keep it from being slash-able) is showing through to the outside. The pattern is very apparent on both sides with the right lighting. Also, I should have gotten it in the dark blue. It would still be dark enough to hide dirt, but for the summer months the black was too dark. I didn’t think much about that when I bought it earlier in the year. I didn’t feel the need for the theft protection features of the bag during much of our trip, but it felt like the wise choice for the short time we spent in a couple areas of Europe. Better too safe than not enough. While I really don’t care much about my bag ‘style’ while traveling, the mesh pattern showing through now is even too much for me. Perhaps their bags in other fabrics would be better – ?

Alex

Thank you for sharing your review with us Lauren. Hope you’ve had the most incredible time on your travels!

Vanessa Fry

I am so appreciative of all of the research you do and share throughout TFG! I recently purchased the Tavelon Cross-Body bag for a trip to South Africa. It’s way roomier than I imagined – I can even fit my large camera into it if I’d like. I’ll report back afterwards!

Heather

Great info. A little unnerving, but much needed. I used your suggestions on a trip to Italy last summer and I’m so glad I did. Thanks for all you do!

Vicki

Thank you for breaking these down so completely. It is so stressful to try to choose the right bag. Choosing the right clothes, the right carryon, the right backpack, the right purse. . . all this makes traveling so stressful before I even get started on my trip! Your blog helps relieve that stress.

Shelley Armour

Love this post and shared it with students that I took to Italy this summer. I ended up getting the travelon messenger bag with the bottle holders and my only complaint is that my metal water bottle (20oz) was apparently too big because the webbing ripped. I think they are meant for the water bottles you buy in a store 🙁 other than that great bag!

Glenda

Great article! There is a new brand called Offero which offers 4 anti theft features plus is patent pending

I want a bag that is stylish and beautiful and anti theft.

I Purchased the manhattan for everyday and the Miami travel tote

Hi Glenda, so pleased you enjoyed the article!! Thank you for sharing your recommendation for a stylish anti-theft bag, sounds fantastic!! 🙂

Bel

I have been using PacSafe travel bags for over 10 years. Travelling the world for work as I do, and travelling to some areas where personal safety is not to be underestimated, I suggest only the smallest sized cross body you can find. Wear it under your jacket if necessary and keep the colours dull or in line with your wardrobes. No red or bright coloured bags. Don’t take it off to eat, go to bathroom, or sit in cabs/cars. etc. I even put my pacsafe through the wash on delicate cold cycle after a trip. I have 6 different bags in various shapes and styles, but all cross body , all pacsafe and all used once a fortnight to once a month. . The thieves know they can’t cut steps or slash the bottoms of those bags. In some of the dodgiest places they have left me alone. Others not so lucky.

Hi Bel, thank you so much for sharing your great review of the PacSafe bag with us and for your travel safety tips, it is very helpful!!

Dianne W

Totally agree that Pacsafe is the BEST anti-theft brand. They make wallets, purses, totes, backpacks and more. I must have more than a dozen of their bags, including two backpacks. They’re my necessities for travel anywhere.

I had bad luck with Travelon, the quality just isn’t there. Stick with the proven winner, Pacsafe. All your other tips are spot on, too.

Wendy

I love my Pacsafe purses and backpack. They’re very stylish and the safety features are top notch. I travel a good bit and find these bags to be comfortable as well as durable.

Sandy

I think Pacsafe bags are built much better than Travelon, though Travelon is definitely more fashionable. I absolutely loved having my Pacsafe Citysafe CS300 with me in Europe this summer. I used it to carry my camera (a6000), extra lens, gorillapod, and as a daypack. It even fits my iPad pro 10.5 in it’s logitech case. I felt totally confident on the metros and even my newly-made friends commented on it. Plus, the cranberry color is so cute! I even took it to the beach and was able to use a small cable to attach and lock it to my rented beach umbrella and/or chair while I went swimming. It really took a lot of stress out of the trip since I was traveling solo. 🙂

Hi Sandy, thank you for sharing your great review of the Pacsafe bag with us!! 🙂

Not apropos of travel bags at all- but I don’t suppose you can share anything about that great gray jacket in the photo of the Travelon messenger bag?

Hello, the jacket is the Anatomie Kenya Safari Jacket, have a look at my review of the jacket: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/these-travel-jackets-are-selling-like-crazy/ Hope this helps! 🙂

Selene

And what about those shoes? I can’t find your post about them. Thanks

Hi Selene, if you are talking about the shoes in the photo of me at the top of the article, I am wearing the Skechers PureFlex Mary Jane Flats featured at the top of this post: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/best-slip-on-sneakers/ Hope this helps! 🙂

Sheena

Thanks for this! I am hesitant on purchasing bags specifically made for anti-theft, since I feel like thieves would recognize them and know their weak areas. Any thoughts on that or am I overthinking?

Hi Sheena, If you do not feel safe using an anti-theft bag, then there are other options to keeping your belongings safe such as a bra stash or a money belt. If you are concerned about theft whilst traveling have a look at our selection of TFG articles about anti-theft products: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/anti-theft-products/ 🙂

Sharon Braswell

I just discovered a gorgeous anti theft bag That goes from sightseeing to dinner with Anti theft protection for scanning or slashing and locks for ultimate protection. Saw it on good morning LaLa Land. It’s Offero. Bags. The ultimate bag. Check it out at Offero handbags.com

Bella Parker

Hey, Nice blog. This will be very useful. Thanks for Sharing

Hi Bella, thank you so much for your lovely comment, so pleased your found the blog useful!! 🙂

Shelley

I was so excited that you reviewed anti-theft purses! I immediately ordered a Travelon one for my 4-month overseas trip. Imagine my disappointment when the seams unraveled with less than a month into my trip! Sadly, I was not able to return it due to my lengthy adventure. Needless to say, I will NOT purchase this brand again. Now…what’s a girl to do?!

Hi Shelly! It’s unfortunate to hear you had a bad experience. Our readers also like the Pacsafe and Lewis & Clark brand, too.

Totally agree about the Travelon brand. I bought a Travelon purse once (at ebags.com) and gently put my hand inside a pocket to check the depth. The fabric RIPPED at the seam. I sent it back and won’t purchase that brand again.

While I really like the stylishness of the Travelon handbags, they are very poorly made with poor quality materials, at least in the interior. I purchased a hobo style bag from Travelon about 3 years ago and sadly the lining ripped apart within 3 months. I was NOT impressed. The lining material was of a very inferior quality and the stitching was subpar. I’ve since switched to PacSafe, while not nearly as stylish, the material used for the entire bag is sturdier and more durable. I’ve been using my PacSafe citysafe 100 bag for 2 years now and it still looks like new.

Hi MJ, thank you for sharing your travel advice! 🙂

Suzanne

I have a really bad neck. So purses that are heavy and awkward can cause me real discomfort. We are going to travel Europe for couple weeks and I’m looking for a good travel bag. It needs to be big enough to be able to hold my sunglass case. Thoughts?

Hi Suzanne, thank you for your question! These articles have lots of ideas about travel purses: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/travel-purses-which-ones-right-for-you/ https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/travel-purse/ Hopefully these will give you some ideas. Have a fantastic trip! 🙂

Travel Tip: Zip Lock bags in various sizes! They come in so handy and virtually take up no space or weight.

Hi Deb, thank you for sharing your travel tip!

Barbar Lies

I am traveling with my Travelon bag now and it is wonderful. My best travel tip is to use a tether to attach your smart phone to your bag. I tuck the tether into the bag when I’m not using the phone for a camera. Admittedly it does not quite pass muster as stylish but if I have to choose between stylish and not losing my phone, I will choose not loosing every time!

Hi Barbar, thank you so much for sharing your travel tip! 🙂

Samantha Rioux

My best travel tip is to not have too much of an itinerary. I’ve always found the best food and the best places by wandering. Not much of a tip but it is something good to remember 🙂 Hope I win! We are leaving in 2 weeks and I’m getting everything together 🙂

Hi Samantha, thank you so much for sharing your insight! Have a great trip 🙂

Jo

Best advice I can give is keep all your travel documents with you and handy.

Hi Jo, thank you for sharing your great travel tip! 🙂

Kristin Tousignant

I don’t have any specific “safe” bags but I love that messenger with the water bottle spot. I carry my swell bottle everywhere – even with rfid sleeves my debit card was compromised. I have a super special weekend trip coming up and my hubby is afraid of me going alone (health issues) but I’m going as a patient advocate and it’s paid for! More to come on this!

Hi Kristin, thank you so much for your comment! 🙂

R Chesterman

Travelon really sets a high bar for the competition. Their bags are so well planned, you KNOW they actually consulted with users to get things just right. I’m looking forward to using my new Travelon bag in Scotland next year.

Hi, thank you so much for your comment! Have a great trip 🙂

Christy

Add my vote to the many who prefer PacSafe bags. I find they are much better quality and more durable construction than Travelon. I also find that many of the anti-theft bags (including the one featured in this article) look to me like diaper bags—decidedly unfashionable and not something I would want to wear around a European capital! I own the PacSafe bag with diagonal zippers pictured in the article, chosen for the size and more stylish looks. I use it as my personal item on the plane and it holds my water bottle, iPad mini, wallet, light jacket and snacks. PacSafe has a number of pretty and practical anti-theft purses and backpacks now. I’m not sure how old this article is but if it’s being updated, I’d suggest taking another look. 🙂

Katherine

Travel Tip: Keep an open, curious mind and be respectful of everyone. Remember you are a guest in someone else’s country, community, city.

Hi Katherine, thank you for sharing your great travel tip!

Sharon Schulze

My travel tip is to take the time before you leave to think about what to wear, exactly what toiletries you’ll need (and to decant your toiletries into really small containers—you probably use less than you’d think); get organized before you go, so you don’t have to stress about it while you’re on your trip.

Hi Sharon, that’s a great tip, thanks for sharing 🙂

Jo Pugsley Fortkamp

So glad you were well cared for after your accident. Praying for speedy recovery.

Hi Jo, thank you so much for your comment! 🙂

Ann Lynch

Love my travelon purse.

Hi Ann, thank you so much for your feedback!

Sheila Stinson Owens

Know it sounds cheesy, but “pack your patience”. Travelling has changed so much over these past few years and one may feel like they are being herded through the process. Enjoy new experiences and memories.

Hi Sheila, thank you for sharing your great travel advice! 🙂

Kathy rycek

My travel advice is to carry 5,10 or 20 dollar cash in and out pocket in case you are robbed at gun point as I was. I only had a straw wrapper and the robber looked nervous so I was afraid to remove my outer layers to give him my security pouch. My travel partner was being held up by his accomplice who did not have a gun so she handed him her pouch and they grabbed it knocking her down on the curb in the process. If I had cash n that outer pocket I could have handed over and they may have run off with that .

Hi Kathy, thank you for taking the time to share your travel experiences 🙂

Sarah Morris

I just don’t take all my stuff with me when I’m out and about. I lock it all in my room, and just take the essentials for the day. I’m older and don’t backpack anymore, and theft can also happen inside a hotel room. But my biggest tip is just don’t take things you don’t want to part with.

Hi Sarah, thank you for sharing your great travel tip! 🙂

Miriam

I love a crossbody bag, and especially like that the most recommended is large enough to hold a camera. Even now that cell phone cameras are great, there’s just something about the feel of a real camera in your hand. I also recommend the travel scarves with a zipper compartment. Great for holding passports, money, train tickets and other valuables. See Amazon for many styles!

Hi Miriam, thank you so much for your comment! 🙂

Deborah A.

I use Zip bags as packing cubes for my rolled clothing. The bags come in several sizes and a vacuum can be achieved y squeezing all air out in order to save space. Plus you can see all contents!

Hi Deborah, thank you for sharing your great travel tip! 🙂

Clara Borges

My number one travel tip: bad things can always happen in a trip, so accept that and move on as soon as possible! Do not ruin your trip crying over something you cannot fix or change right now. Put it away on your mind so you can cry over it after your trip is done. By then, time will make it better <3

Hi Clara, thank you for sharing your travel advice!

Cheryl Westra

Using so many of these tips on my upcoming 3 week trip in Europe. My tip, take a photo of your license and passport and upload to a site you can access from anywhere (I use google keep). If your stuff is stolen you will have the info you need.

Hi Cheryl, thank you for your feedback! That is a great tip, thanks for sharing 🙂

Brenda

Great travel advice. With slash proof straps on the bags, you need to make sure you keep it close to your body toward the front so “grab and run”or “drive by” can’t easily reach your bag. The bag ( especially when it’s crossbody) isn’t going anywhere So you don’t want to give the crook a leash.

Hi Brenda, thank you so much for your comment! 🙂

Deidra Atkin

Such an important issue to be aware of. Many years ago we were in Paris. My husband squatted low to ground to get perfect vantage point pic of Notre Dame when a man came behind him and started to reach out towards him. I yelled and the man backed away & left. Not sure what he was planning but my husband had no idea he was there. We were lucky in that I was far enough away he didn’t realize we were together & that he decided not to do anything.

Hi Deidra, thank you so much for sharing your travel experiences 🙂

M. Dyer

I love the Sprigs wrist wallets. I use it for travel. People think that I am wearing a wrist splint which is great for security. My drivers license, credit card and cash is safely on me when in the airport or shopping.

Hi, thank you so much for your feedback!

Lisa Suppan

Need to get one if these for my trip to Italy.

Hi Lisa, thank you for your comment! Have a great trip to Italy 🙂

Abby Dela Paz

My travel tip: get brightly-coloured suitcases. Even if they hurt your eyes to look at. That way, you can always pick yours out from the crowds, and would deter thieves from making you a target.

Hi Abby, thank you for sharing your travel tip! 🙂

Karen

My best travel tip is to be prepared. There can be scary experiences on public transport and trying to find your way around an unfamiliar city, but if you do your research ahead of time you can avoid most problems and disappointments.

Hi Karen, thank you for taking the time to share your travel advice! 🙂

Emily C

My best travel tip is to be a learner! Learn from the locals, learn from your surroundings, learn about yourself.

Hi Emily, thank you so much for sharing your travel tips! 🙂

Jennifer Mumby

This purse would be fantastic on my upcoming trip to Northern Ireland and Scotland! It’s roomy enough for the essentials when traveling, plus a few extras I’ve learned about on Fashion Travel Girl!

Hi Jennifer, thank you so much for your comment! Have a great trip to Northern Ireland and Scotland 🙂

Julie S

Carrying zip lock bags and using packing cubes made a huge difference on my travel!

Hi Julie, thank you for sharing your travel tip! 🙂

Alesha Braitenbach

Number 1 travel tip is to just do your research beforehand, familiarize yourself with the culture that you’re going to be visiting, and make sure that you respect that culture. Learning a few words (hello, good day, please and thank-you) in the language of the country that you’re visiting goes a long way as well!

Hi Alesha, that is great travel advice, thank you for sharing it! 🙂

Anne V. Powell

Travel Tip: Plan more days of activities than you have.

You never know when the train schedule won’t cooperate with your plan to go to Hampton Court Palace, so you need to come up with a totally different set of things to do/see that day.

Hi Anne, thank you for taking the time to share your travel tip! 🙂

J Brunk

My travel tip is to come up with a packing list that you can reprint so you never forget the things you need. And leave irreplaceable items at home.

Hi, thank you for sharing your travel tips! 🙂

Jessica

This is super helpful since I am traveling overseas with my kids and will need to not only keep my wallet safe but also need something big enough to keep their stuff in.

Hi Jessica, thank you so much for your feedback! 🙂

Brenda Lee T

Best travel tip is to keep extra photocopies of travel documents and tickets with you. Travel light and be relaxed and confident. Thanks

Travel Tip: Take blank postcards.

I don’t like a lot of mass-produced postcards, so take blanks ones and do sketches or watercolors of something you’ve seen. It makes a better keepsake for the ones you’re sending it to, and it also helps you remember that special place better.

Hi Anne, thank you so much for sharing your travel tip! 🙂

Debbie D

Roll your clothes when you travel. Saves tons of space.

Does anyone use one of those timbuk2 bags? Are they good for anti theft?

Hi Debbie, that’s a great travel tip, thanks for sharing it! Thank you for your question. We’ll share your question here so the author of the article can reply. 🙂

Jennifer

I wish I could go without carrying a bag, but I need to get one of these for when I’m travelling with my child.

Hi Jennifer, thank you so much for taking the time to share your insight! 🙂

Debbie H

Travel tip: packing cubes & less is more: pack less, more freedom

Hi Debbie, thank you so much for sharing your travel tip 🙂

Tracey

I ❤️ my Traveling bag, I have carried it through ?? , ?? , Portugal ?? and ??, so east to carry and makes travel safe and easy. My #1 travel tip is to carry Zip Lock Gallon size bags. The are a great way to organize. I like to separate thing so gather by day so that I can remember where and when I found things. I am still trying to learn more about how to pack though, I am struggle fitting everyything I need the carry on!

Hi Tracey, thank you so much for your comment! Thanks for sharing your great travel tip! 🙂

Mary Lou

My very best travel tip (and oh, so hard to learn!) is to travel light. I was so happy when I finally figured it out. Adventures are so much more fun when you aren’t distracted by all your stuff.

Hi Mary, thank you so much for taking the time to share you travel tip! 🙂

Julissa Cruz

Thank you for sharing this and it is very helpful. Travel tip: Leave some money folded inside the insole of your sneaker.

Hi Julissa, thank you so much for your feedback. That’s a great idea, thank you for sharing it 🙂

Lisa

Top travel tip: packing cubes combined with the TFG packing lists have been a game-changer for me. Thanks Alex and the TFG team!

Hi Lisa, thank you so much for your comment! 🙂

Linde Millett-Beatty

Thanks Alex, this is a great post.! It really helped me decide on the Classic Travelon Anti-Theft Messenger bag. I have used a smaller Pacsafe cross body bag but wanted something bigger. This one has great features, especially the water bottle holder. When I travel I try to blend in like a local and not look alarmed if I get lost for example. I keep my valuables in two safe places and have some language phrases of the country I visit. Some great travel tips here on this post! Invaluable X

Hi Linde, thank you so much for your feedback! Thank you for sharing your travel advice 🙂

Vicki Roberts

Loved the Travelon cross body and travel bags. Do they make camera bags?

Hi Vicki, thank you so much for your comment! Have a look at this article: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/cross-body-purses-the-best-travel-shoulder-bags-for-women/ Take a look at the section on the Travelon bag. Hope this helps 🙂

Travel Tip: My mom has gotten into historical sewing and found out a trick from a professional costumer…spraying clothes (especially things that aren’t easily washable) with cheap vodka to keep them fresh if you can’t wash them right away.

So, I take a small perfume diffuser full of vodka on trips.

Hi Anne, thank you so much for sharing your travel advice! 🙂

Cathi Prosecky

I never keep all our cash in one spot. We also never pull out our wallets with large amounts of cash showing, we will leave out a few euro or pounds for use during the day for snacks. Never walk around with an open purse either, makes it too easy for an expert pickpocket to gain access.

Hi Cathi, that’s a great travel tip, thank you for sharing 🙂

Kathryn

I have so many packing tips… Using packing cells, using clip seal bags, taking a tiny pocket sized foldable backpack in case of unexpected purchases, downloading offline maps apps and translators and using dryer sheets in my luggage. But the best travel tip I have is actually a very simple one- look confident. I travel a lot and before I walk out the door each day I scan a map to orient myself, ensure I have an offline map just in case, put on some really reflective aviators and make sure I look like I know where I am going (even though most of the time I have no idea!) I find looking confident and purposeful means you don’t look like a tourist and makes you less of a target to anyone with ill intentions.

Hi Kathryn, thank you so much for sharing you travel advice 🙂

Barbara Jean

Best tip is to include name and contact info inside suitcase.

Hi Barbara, thank you for sharing your travel tip 🙂

Lauren

Check your maps before you leave so you won’t look like a lost tourist and always carry water and snacks.

Hi Lauren, thank you for sharing your travel advice 🙂

Rhoda

I just fell in love with the Travelon backpack, especially in the gray color. My travel tip is to pack everything in a carryon that can fit under the seat ? I dread the hustle of snatching and stressing for overhead space. Since I get cold easily, I wear lots of layers on the plane, which means less items to pack in my bag. Plus the bag I have is convertible and can either be a backpack or shoulder bag. It can serve several purposes. In my case, I travel for work so I also use it as my work bag as it fits my 15” laptop

Hi Rhoda. thank you so much for your comment and for sharing your advice 🙂

Becky

Rhoda— what is the brand and model of your bag? It sounds like the perfect solution!

Penny

Number one travel tip is zip lock bags, various sizes. Can be used for so many things, dirty clothes, snacks for day trips, prevent leaking liquids to spoil other items, shoe bag.

Hi Penny, thank you so much for sharing your travel tip 🙂

Robin

I love reading all of your articles. Even if I’m not visiting that particular part of the world! A great travel tip: Purchase a pair of foldable flats. Everyone says to never walk around an airplane in bare feet or socks. The minute I sit down in my seat, I take off my shoes & put on these. When we’re starting to land, I remove them & put my shoes back on. They’re soft, comfy, very affordable, lightweight & fold up into a soft pouch to throw in your carry on. Many colors to choose from on Amazon.

Hi Robin, thank you so much for your feedback! That’s a great travel tip, thanks for sharing it 🙂

Shannon Dourado

In the past I too didn’t like the unfashionable look of safety purses. Glad to see safety purses getting a facelift. My tip? Just enjoy the adventure! No matter what happens, you can go home. Interact with the locals. I’ve had fantastic experiences with people I’ve met while traveling. Be humble and gracious.

Hi Shannon, thank you so much for your comment and for sharing your travel tip! 🙂

Mary

My travel tip: have patience and be polite. Precede your question with a greeting. Be considerate, especially of the locals.

Hi Mary, thank you for sharing your travel advice 🙂

Karen Mowinski

I like Travelon bags for the safety features but also am becoming obsessed with Lug bags for travel. I feel safer with RFID in the bags and in my wallet. For me when I travel -want something that can wear crossbody (ideally multiple ways to wear it) and that packs a lot functionally without being too big/bulky.

Hi Karen, thank you so much for your comment 🙂

Rebecca

Thank you so much for the tip.

Hi Rebecca, thank you so much for your comment!

Terry A.

Using packing cubes is my travel tip. They revolutionized the way I pack.

Hi Terry, thank you for sharing your great travel tip! 🙂

Christine Bash Roeske

Alex, thank you for the blog post and especially your FB group, I learn so much from TFG and fellow admirers! I love cross body bags for travel, I’ve wish listed some of the Travelon bags above for an upcoming trip later this year. One of my favorite travel tips are freezer-strength Ziplock bags – sandwich sizes for credit cards and another for foreign currency, medium size for TSA and larges for medicine, charging cords/headphones. I find it helps me locate exactly what I need immediately (and helps my husband, too).

Again, thanks for the blog and FB group – Love!

Hi Christine, thank you so much for your feedback, so glad you like the blog and the FB group and that their helpful! That’s a great travel tip, thanks for sharing 🙂

Joanne Pugsley

Pick a travel purse that had water bottle pockets to stay hydrated!

Hi Joanne, thank you for sharing your travel advice 🙂

jane werthmann

so happy I came across this post – I will be traveling to italy in June thanks.

Hi Jane, thank you so much for your feedback! Have a great trip 🙂

Janet

For the plane, wear something with a pocket so you can easily access passport info and carry a pen for the forms you need to fill out. Good for boarding pass too.

Hi Janet, thank you so much for sharing your great travel advice! 🙂

I always try to blend in like a local. I don’t talk loudly or draw attention to myself even when I am lost. I always keep my valuables in two safe places, one being a discrete Anti-theft mini cross body bag and had no problems all over Italy and Berlin last year. I have just purchased a Travelon messenger bag for an upcoming trip to Europe, where I will travel alone for most of it. Another travel tip is to know a few words of the local language and pack light!

Hi Linde, thank you so much for sharing your travel tips 🙂

Mari W

My tip would be pack light!

Hi Mari, that’s a great tip, thanks for sharing 🙂

Kathryn Junco

Best travel tip from my experience: Pack as lightly as possible. Nothing is worse than lugging a huge suitcase up several flights of stairs. Rewear outfits and mix and match. It is likely nobody will notice.

Hi Kathryn, thank you for sharing your great travel advice 🙂

Yim Sinclair

I would say I got RM backpack and trevelon convertible messenger after reading your article and watch your vdo. Also I got your packing cubes! So now I am planning for a trip to Italy and my number one tip is reading Travel Fashion Girl.

Hi Yim, thank you so much for your feedback! Hope you enjoy the packing cubes on many adventures! That’s great advice, thank you 🙂

Cinthia H

My tip is to use packing cubes and travel light.

Hi Cinthia, that’s great advice, thanks for sharing 🙂

Mary

Take a picture of the name and address / hotel of your hotel or print it on a 3×5 card to keep in a pocket in case you get lost while out seeing the sights that way you can show it to someone if you have a language barrier and still get directions.

Hi Mary, that is great advice, thank for taking the time to share it 🙂

Judy Smith

2 wire coathangers and 6 pegs gives me my portable for laundry .

Hi Judy, thank you for sharing your travel tip 🙂

Deanna Powell

My favorite travel advice is to utilize Travel Fashion Girl!! I have shared your site with friends, family and coworkers because you have the BEST tips, FASHION, advice and reviews in the business!

Hi Deanna, thank you so much for your comment, so glad you like it! 🙂

Lynda

I absolutely love my Travelon mini crossbody. I use it as my everyday purse. As for my number one travel tip, I think it’s to always carry a snack in your bag like RX bars which I love. When I’m starting to lag, eating an snack helps keep me going and makes me feel better mentally and physically. Plus eating something I know that my body tolerates well and not some random thing picked up off the street makes me feel better. Oh, and carry a bit of toilet paper folded up into a ziploc bag. Both come in handy way more often than you’d think!

Hi Lynda, thank you so much for your comment! Thank you for sharing your travel tips 🙂

Marilyn Sarasquet

Loved you Travelon video! Great info on all the different bags!

Hi Marilyn, thank you so much for your feedback 🙂

Lorri

I love the Travelon cross-body classic bag. I have it in 2 colors! One travel tip is to check the expiration date of your passport and make sure it exceeds the requirements of the country to which you will be traveling. Some require 3-6 months validity beyond your departure date!

Hi Lorri, thank you so much for your comment! That is great advice, thanks for sharing it 🙂

Travel Tip (this one is really just for fun): For a big trip, set up a countdown app on your phone. It’s something to look at in the middle of a bad work day. 😀

Hi Anne, thank you for sharing your great travel tip! 🙂

Elissa Freyer

Always know where your passport is. Carry it with you in a safe compartment of your crossover bag or in the safe of where you are staying. Also I always like to travel with a photocopy of my passport & drivers license just in case I misplace my identification.

Hi Elissa, thank you for sharing your travel tip, that’s great advice 🙂

Rebecca Montaldo

Download movies or binge-worthy shows onto your Ipad or similar device. It makes flight delays a lot more bearable and entertaining. Also, I have a dedicated travel cord and charger caddy pre-packed for all my devices ready to go.

Hi Rebecca, thank you for sharing your travel tip 🙂

Rachel

One of my tips for traveling, especially if you’re traveling “carry-on only”, is to minimize your electronics. I always travel with a 7 inch tablet because it’s the perfect size for me to check my emails and search online. It also has a front & back facing camera with an internal speaker/microphone so I can take pictures and/or record videos. Plus, it’s so small that I don’t worry about it taking up space! My tablet has allowed me to leave my laptop and camera and all of their accessories at home which leaves me with more space and less to worry about. I love it!

Hi Rachel, thank you for sharing your travel tips! 🙂

deneen

I haven’t tried this one yet but plan to on my trip to Greece next month. Instead of decanting my skin care products into smaller containers, soak a cotton ball for each day that you’ll be traveling in the product & put into its own snack-size ziploc bag.

Hi Deneen, thank you for sharing your travel tip! 🙂

Nikki Cantu

My number one travel tip is a packing list. I print mine out and then check things off as I pack them. One time, I thought I could do it without it and forgot tons of things 🙁 Never again!

Hi Nikki, that’s great advice, thanks for sharing 🙂

33

I am list gal, too. I started my list a month before departure, adding and deleting items right up to the day before departure. I highlight items I did not use list after the trip. My list has helped me to not forget things and to minimize overpacking.

Shelley

I never really thought about anti-theft handbags but this article is giving me reason to reconsider. As for tips, never ever pull out a was of money when at a street market. Just keep the equivalent of $30 in an easily accessible pocket.

Hi Shelley, thank you so much for your comment! Thanks for sharing your travel tip! 🙂

Mimi42

My top packing tip? Two words: packing cubes!

Hi Mimi, thank you so much for your comment, that’s a great travel trip! 🙂

Another travel tip: Take raw almonds for a plane snack. No salt.

Hi Anne, thank you for sharing your travel tip!

Linda

I love the anti-theft backpack. It would make me feel secure carrying things on my back.

Hi Linda, thank you so much for your comment! 🙂

Cathey Clarke

Thank you, I have the Travelon cross body bucket bag, I love it and use it every day when traveling, a would be thief was foiled on the Paris metro, as I had clipped the zips closed, and I love the mini light that comes with the bag, helps with finding items at night especially. I rave about this bag to anyone who will listen. My number one travel tip is to wear in the shoes that you plan on taking travelling, don’t keep them ready for the trip, you will smile at the end of every day if you do.

Hi Cathy, thank you so much for your feedback! Thank you for sharing your experiences and your travel tip 🙂

G. A

I do not really have a number one travel tip. I would just plan in advance to know your destination. Have fun when you get there though as plans can change – so be flexible.

Hi, thank you so much for sharing your insight 🙂

Jennifer Bell

Quite simple really, take a few ziplock bags with you. They are useful for a number of things, leaky bottles etc, but also good for separating different currencies.

Hi Jennifer, thank you for sharing your travel tip! 🙂

Sierra Brown

Ive spent a great deal of time in Mexico on missions trips. Unfortunately, due to an autoimmune disease, I have a true allergy to the sun, so I am covered head to toe. But this actually helps me with safety. I keep a small crossbody purse hidden under my long, flowy blouses for valuables, then a bigger crossbody tote over my clothes that carries my medical supplies, water, and a small amount of cash in a small wallet attached by strap on the inside. I also look for maxi dresses or light pants with deep pockets or pockets that snap closed. Ive never had my things stolen, even in the most sketchy places. I also shop at second hand stores for travel clothes and accessories, that way, I wont be that upset if things are stolen.

Hi Sierra, thank you so much for sharing your experiences! 🙂

Sandy Winegar

I haven’t traveled much, but my husband will be retiring soon so we will definitely be traveling more in the near future. I learn so much from you, Alex, and all readers that follow you. The one trip to Japan, last year, made me realize that although I LOVE the RM Julian backpack, it was not practical when taking the train so often. A crossbody is more practical. Not only in having to get your ticket out and your usually rushing, but when you’re inside the train. Whether you’re sitting or standing, you’re always taking off and putting on your backpack. Kind of a slight inconvenience. With a crossbody, it stays in one place and everything is at your fingertips. I still love my RM for walking around because it feels better to my shoulders. Thank you again for all that you offer to all of us. I really appreciate it. Have a great day!

Hi Sandy, thank you so much for your feedback! That is great advice, thanks for sharing 🙂

Terra

Make time to talk to the locals! Take public transportation when possible, or strike up a conversation with someone at a pub or a park. Chat them up. By talking with them, you can find out the best places to eat, the nicest treasures off the beaten path, and make some wonderful memories.

Hi Terra, that’s a great travel tip, thanks for sharing 🙂

Another travel tip:

Don’t assumer it’s a short walk. Look at total distance before you walk that far in heeled boots.

Hi Anne, thank you for your great travel tip! 🙂

sofia

I do wish that my favorite Fjallraven Kanken backpack had some of these anti-theft features, since I find this backpack really confortable and multiuse

Hi Sofia, thank you so much for your comment! 🙂

Jen Bennett

I’ve looked at these bags before but have been on the fence about purchasing because of what other travelers have noted: I wish they were a little more fashionable. Love the features but the canvas just strikes me as a little too casual; I’d love to see the Signature 3 Crossbody (my favorite design so far) in a full grain black leather (like the Rebecca Minkoff backpack!). Now I am planning a trip to Peru and considering whether I feel safe enough carrying my Minkoff backpack…which I LOVE…or whether it’s time to pull the trigger. But, without your post I may not even have considered it so thank you!

Hi Jen, thank you so much for your feedback! 🙂

Eugenie Sung

Thank you for sharing your tips! I’ll be sure to keep them in mind for my Easter trip with my kids!

Hi Eugenie, thank you so much for your comment! Have a great trip 🙂

Debbie Dunning

Get a travel credit card with a limit on it. If it does get lost or stolen, it will prevent a lavish spending spree. Also carry a cc that doesn’t have charge fees associated with use, some cards will charge 3-5% per use. If two of you are travelling together, each person should have a different credit card in the event one gets lost/stolen and you need to cancel it, the other person has a different one for expenses. Do not travel with items you never want to loose, leave them at home.

Hi Debbie, that’s a great travel tip, thank you for sharing it 🙂

Mary Slemmer

I love Travelon bags! My number one tip for traveling is to be super organized in advance when possible! I can never have too many lists, including packing lists! I love your awesome lists Alex! You’ve transformed my packing!!

Hi Mary, thank you so much for your feedback! 🙂

Angela Freeman

Love cross body bags, stylist yet safe to travel with. Great features in the Travelon range.

Hi Angela, thank you so much for your comment! 🙂

Amy T

I leave all of my “nice” jewelry at home. I wear a simple wedding band that if taken or lost will not make me cry. While in Buenos Aires a few years ago, my sister in law almost had her arm taken off when someone tried to take her Rolex watch off of her wrist. A guy ran by her, grabbed her wrist and attempted to unlatch the watch. My niece quickly realized what was happening and hit him in the face with her fist. His accomplice drove by on a motorcycle out of nowhere and he hopped on and sped off. My sister in law was bruised and a local shop owner gave her a bag of ice for her arm. All of this happened in a matter of seconds and we were in broad daylight among people! So now ALL jewelry stays at home except for a simple pair of unassuming earrings and my simple gold wedding band.

Hi Amy, thank you for sharing your experiences. That’s a great travel tip, thank you for sharing it 🙂

Katrina Lynn

Been looking for a bag! Love these!!!

Hi Katrina, thank you so much for your feedback! 🙂

Carole Salellas

Excelent article with many choices to choose from! Thanks for all the good info.

Hi Carole, thank you so much for your feedback, glad you enjoyed the article 🙂

Karen

Wear a jacket with an inside pocket (preferably one that has a zip closure). Safer than a pants pocket while still being easy to get to when you need it. Great for cash, cards, and transit passes!

Hi Karen, thank you for sharing your travel tip! 🙂

Julie Magnus

Hi Alex thanks for the great info. I’ve been using the Pacsafe metro bag and it is great as a carry on personal item- holds my tablet kindle toiletries wallet snacks and a sweater. And a great way to stay safe. But it does get heavy so having a lighter cross body bag to switch to and lighten the load is my goal.

Hi Julie, thank you for your feedback! Thank you for sharing your travel tip 🙂

Jenni Lintz

Thank you for sharing a variety of bag options. I usually carry a Sherpani bag because it is what I have at home. My travel tip is to carry a small pouch of essential oils including peppermint and lavender. Peppermint comes in handy with car sickness and/or yucky fumes/smells on the plane and lavender is helpful for soothing sunburns or other skin stuff.

Hi Jenni, thank you so much for your comment! Thank you for sharing your travel tip! 🙂

Polona

Usually I travel with small hiking backpack and I keep small amounts of money hidden in different inside pockets.

Hi Polona, that’s a great travel tip, thank you for sharing! 🙂

Rachel

One travel tip I have is to pack two or three binder clips with you. They are small to pack but useful for securing hotel/hostel/accommodation curtains shut. This helps block out the light more and make it easier to sleep which is helpful when you are adjusting to a new schedule & overcoming jet lag. Another tip is to try to switch whatever toiletries you can to solids. There are great options for solid shampoo bars, body wash bars, face wash bars, lotion bars, etc.

Anne Powell

#1 travel tip: Don’t check luggage.

I’ve never lost luggage, and I don’t have to wait forever at baggage claim.

Eu

I like to pack my personal items in clear zip loc bags. They’re easy to identify and I can just grab them easily, especially in my mostly black travel bags!

Hi Eu, thank you for sharing your travel tip! 🙂

Cyn

I roll my shirts and tshirts and put them around my suitcase so in the middle i can put some fragile souvenirs like beer cans, or some eatables in glass (i love to eat, the beer is to give as present) and all is wrapped inside a plastic bag just in case! Everything ends up good packed and fixed because we know the airport won’t care and throw our luggage like freesbies

Hi Cyn, that’s a great travel tip, thank you for sharing it 🙂

Katarina

You might want to look into shoes, as well. For example Amazon has combat boots that have hidden compartments for cash or credit cards. They come in an array of colors.

Hi Katarina, that’s a great travel tip, thank you for sharing it 🙂

Coleen Knickelbein

My favorite new travel tip is take a folding hanger and travel size Downy Wrinkle Release with Febreeze. If wearing over clothes twice, can spritz and hang in bath while showering and all night. Between the steam and Downy, many less wrinkles, and you’ve air-washed them!

Hi Coleen, that’s a great tip! Thank you for sharing it 🙂

Emily Grant

This article is so helpful, thank you! I’ve been looking for a new anti-theft bag for my next trip abroad and Travel Fashion Girl has officially made my search so much easier.

Hi Emily, thank you so much for your feedback! Glad you found the article helpful 🙂

Shawna Lincicome

Carrying small amounts of cash and one cc along with ID (not passport) have worked well in the past. A place for umbrella is helpful.

Hi Shawna, thank you for taking the time to share your insight! 🙂

Tracy Lipsett

Thanks for the awesome ideas! Love this blog!

Hi Tracey, thank you so much for your comment! Glad you liked the blog:)

Faye Doherty

so……… you’ve done your research and planning, decided what is applicable to you and purchased and packed accordingly. You’ve done all you can to ensure a safe, happy and economical trip. Now stop worrying……… there is really no right or wrong way to travel, just relax, live in the moment and enjoy the experience.

Hi Faye, thank you for your comment! That’s a great tip 🙂

E K

Thank you very much for featuring Travelon bags on TFG. I wouldn’t have discovered these range of awesome bags if not for you. I have the Anti Theft Messenger Bag and now itching to try other Travelon bags!! ? I’ve also recommended them to family and friends. So glad they are accessible to us! They ship to Asia, not all retailers do!

Hi Eunice, thank you so much for your feedback! So glad you found it helpful 🙂

Carole Lietzke

Pack all medications in your carry-on. Controlled substances (ie., narcotics) should be in their original prescription bottles/containers.

Hi Carole, that’s a great tip, thank you for sharing 🙂

Jamie Monroe

I just use a cheap, small crossbody bag! I also like a mini backpack but sometimes the destination is not great for that.

Hi Jamie, thank you for taking the time to share your experiences 🙂

Emma Robbins

one of the best travel tips I’ve ever heard is to wear jackets with inside pockets, but of course you can’t fit much! that’s why these kinds of anti-theft bags are even better.

Hi Emma, thank you for your comment! That’s a great tip, thanks for sharing 🙂

Penny

Have a look at scottevest vest, hoodies and jackets. They have between 7-20 hidden pockets!

Dee ray

Always be one step ahead when you travel. Keep your valuables on you or locked up. I always keep an extra card and a stash of money separate from my purse in case of theft.

Hi Dee, that’s a great suggestion, thank you for sharing! 🙂

Courtney Osborn

My favorite tip is to be organized and prepared but still willing to be spontaneous. When going new places, my husband and I research the top places to go, get recommendations, and decide what general areas we want to go to. We make sure to hit the top things on our list and then just wander to see what else we can find. When we went to Tokyo, we found the best ramen place and a beautiful little park just by wandering around.

Hi Courtney, that’s a great tip, thank you for sharing 🙂

Anna O'Connor

I had my wallet stolen out of my hand bag in St Petersburg. At the time I thought someone had bumped into me and didn’t realize it had gone. My lesson learned was not to carry everything – cash, cards, passport etc – in the one place.

Hi Anna, thank you for taking the time to share your experiences!

Mary

My number one travel tip is don’t sweat the small stuff. Travellng requires patience and flexibility. And invest in a good pair of noise cancelling headphones.

Hi Mary, that’s a great tip, thank you for sharing it 🙂

Lisa Murphy

I have used Travelon purses for years and love them. My travel tip is to remember to tell your credit card companies where you are going and make sure you have a card with a chip. We had trouble getting cash 3 years because we didn’t have the chip.

Hi Lisa, that’s a great tip, thank you for sharing it 🙂

Melita Routh

My top travel tip is to not plan your trip down to the minute. Have some days to go with the flow, wander around. Some of the best experiences you have are the unexpected delights.

Hi Melita, that’s a great idea, thank you for sharing it 🙂

Laura Scovel

I think the the tip that revolutionized my packing was being told I did not have to pack a new outfit for each day. I knew how to mix different pieces at home, with a wash and and a week in between re-wears, but realizing I could bring only three bottoms and four tops for a week (or more) by simply mixing and matching and planning ahead transformed the way I pack.

Hi Laura, thank you for sharing your experiences 🙂

Bev Hunt

On one of my first travel experiences I happened to meet a wealthy couple from Boston that traveled extensively. They shared with me their tips. They said never to travel wearing expensive jewelry or watches. Always spread your money and valuables out in different places on your body. And try not to stand out. I have tried to follow their advice. I don’t have the anti theft cross body bag but I sure would love it.

Hi Bev, thank you for sharing your travel tips 🙂

Kiley Griffin

Travel Tip: I always travel with clothing that I am ready to part with, either an old t shirt, pajamas that have seen better days or old socks. I don’t feel bad leaving them at the end of the trip that way the bag gets a little lighter and I have room for a few new souvenirs!

Hi Kiley, that’s a great suggestion, thank you for sharing it 🙂

Emily Rose

I’ve been using my pacsafe cross body for years and I have come to absolutely love it. Unfortunately general wear and tear has come into play and it’s not looking as fashionable as it once did.

Hi Emily, thank you so much for taking the time to share your insight 🙂

Larissa Tayles

I do not carry an anti-theft bag yet, but I will be looking into it as the only times I’ve had things stolen while travelling are from a backpack! My travel tip is…also to do with bags..but I always chuck in a couple of roll-up nylon shopping bags when I am packing. They are great as dirty washing bags, shoe bags, beach and pool bags or to put your shopping in as a way to reduce the use of plastic shopping bags. My ones hold up to 20kg so they can carry a lot of groceries! And when you have bought too many souvenirs you can also use them as an extra carry-on bag (and I’ve never been charged for it). My favourites are envirosax (Australian) and Loqi. They all have beautiful eye-catching designs too.

Hi Larissa, that’s a great suggestion, thank you for sharing it 🙂

Leslie DiMaio

I think one of the best tips is to have some basics planned but also to have flexible time and to just relax and go with the flow when things don’t work out and consider it an adventure.

Regarding what purse to take, I love having learned about the various anti-theft protections. Having grown up in a large city, I almost always used zipped crossbody purses that I kept my hands on when I was walking about.

Hi Leslie, thank you for sharing your experiences 🙂

Sheila Wright

I love security that the Travelon and Pacsafe brands offer. The tip I am trying to live by: pack then take several items out and leave them behind. This applies to purses and luggage.

Hi Shelia, thank you so much for your comment 🙂

Nadine van Rensburg

Thanks for a great article and reviews. I travel a lot to Africa and tend to keep it simple, never leave valuables lying around in plain sight, always carry bags across body, and keep it small. I have however been burgled at night while asleep and lost many digital devices (family trip) which were scattered around the house we were sleeping in. Since then I sleep with my cell phone under the mattrass and travel hand bag with passports and wallet tucked under the bed!

Hi Nadine, thank you so much for your feedback, glad you like the article. That’s a great travel tip, thanks for sharing 🙂

Margaret

Great article – thanks for sharing! My travel tip is to try and use just a carry on. It makes life so much easier and you always have everything with you.

Hi Margaret, thank you for your feedback! That’s a great tip, thank you for sharing it 🙂

Danielle T

My #1 travel tip (besides an anti-theft bag) is a Travel Checklist. A spreadsheet with all the items you travel with. I separate things by category…toiletries, clothes, travel documents, etc. If I don’t need a specific item on that trip, then just cross it out. This keeps my husband and I organized and prevents us from forgetting things when we travel. We’re always adding to it and keeping it updated.

Hi Danielle, that’s a great suggestion, thank you for sharing it 🙂

Angela Galvin

I bought a fabulous cross body satchel in dark grey canvas years ago it has flaps and zippered compartments – and plenty of room for a rain jacket – trouble is it is so heavy that by the end of a long day my neck hurts. So last time we went to the US I bought a small shoulder bag I wear it cross body and it has my phone credit card some cash and passports on it. Hubby gets a back pack with my scarf, rain jacket and a water bottle. Best reveal tip – make the husband carry the heavy stuff lol

Hi Angela, thank you for sharing your travel tip! 🙂

sher shepps

Definitely need to get one of these anti-theft bags. My best travel tip is to always carry a shawl – it can be used in so many ways on your trip – not just to keep you warm.

Hi Sher, that’s a great suggestion, thank you for sharing it! 🙂

Hayley

These recommendations are great! I need a travel bag for my upcoming trip to Italy, so this is super helpful. One travel tip I’ve heard over the years in the same vein that I think is really helpful is when you’re walking with a rolling suitcase to keep it either between you and your travel companion, or if you’re alone to keep the bag on the side of you closest to a wall. This applies to bags as well. That way it’s much harder for someone to swipe it as they go by, especially if they’re on a bike, Vespa, motorcycle, etc.

Hi Hayley, thank you for your feedback! That’s a great travel tip, thank you for sharing it 🙂

Arlene Anderson

Over door shoe bag. It keeps everything off limited counter space. Sunglasses, sunscreen, medication, hairbrushes, toiletries ,….

Hi Arlene, thank you for sharing your travel tip 🙂

Alisea Blower

I think my number one travel safety tip is just to keep your eyes open. Watch for people who seem to be getting a little close for comfort (especially if there seems to be more than one getting close).

Hi Alisea, that’s a great idea, thank you for sharing it 🙂

Shelle Raines

I always take a coach leather cross-body and a XS coach backpack. The cross body is for tight/high risk of theft areas because my hand is always covering it. The small back pack holds everything that I need for a full day out and about.

Hi Shelle, thank you for sharing your travel tip!

VIcki

Alex, I’m so happy I found your site and watched all the Live events from LV. We are traveling to Europe during August and September this year and as you can imagine – coming from Australia will require some super packing and discovering handy tips is a bonus. We are going Sydney – Rome – up through Italy to Switzerland, France, Germany, Scotland, Norway – well I hope I haven’t forgotten anything…. anyway, it means lots of different weather… I love everything you have shown, especially a bag to keep your things safe!

Hi Vicki, thank you so much for your feedback, glad you like the site!

Jennifer

I have to say that I love Travelon so much that I used it for my every day purse, in addition to using it while I travel! These purses have the best anti-theft protection and I feel really secure with this bag where I am in the world.

Hi Jennifer, thank you for taking the time to share your insight! 🙂

Merry Borowski

Even though you may have a Travelon bag, still carry your cash and credit cards in a money belt or pouch.

Hi Merry, that’s a great suggestion, thank you for sharing it 🙂

Helen Little

I can not locate the giveaway form in this post and would LOVE to win one of those fabulous bags.

Best travel accessory that I recently discovered was a Travel scarf with hidden pocket. Held my passport, cash and cards in RFID protection.

Hi Helen, to enter the giveaway you need to log in either using facebook or your email address using the box below where the giveaway is announced on the article. Hope this helps! That’s a great travel tip, thank you for sharing it 🙂

Barb Lamm

Love my Travelon bags!!! I always use the lock system on chairs at restaurants that are on my Travelon bags! On a side note I always take a picture of our hotel and the closest street signs with my phone!

Hi Barb, thank you for taking the time to share your travel tip!

Diane

With any trip, I check the weather report for my destination for the upcoming week. It’s amazing how often it differs from a “typical” season.

Crossbody bags are a must.

Hi Diane, that’s a great suggestion, thank you for sharing it 🙂

SAMANTHA DICICCO

My best travel tip is pack, then halve what you’ve packed.. People don’t see you every day like they do at home! You can wear things over & over when your travelling! ❤️

Hi Samantha, that’s a great idea, thank you for sharing it!

G. Kapral

I always pack additional empty quart size ziplocks in the small outside pockets of my luggage, they are great if I have any wet bathing suits or if my TSA small liquid bag breaks.

Hi, thank you for taking the time to share your travel tip!

Madelene Rousset

I am using a small Travelon crossbody on an upcoming Paris, Rome, Venice trip. Cant wait to see how it works out for me. I think I will love it. Thanks for all the great tips!

Hi Madelene, thank you so much for your feedback! 🙂

Bonnie Feather

Best travel tip: DO IT! Posts like this might make some think it’s better to stay at home, but it’s really meant to encourage you to travel. If you’ve wanted to travel, but just never figured out how to fit it into your life, get ready. If you want to go, there’s a way to do it. You might not be the most stylish (but you could!) or stay at the most luxurious hotels, etc, but you’ll be THERE! Wherever you want to be! Just Do it! (And read TFG for all the tips, not just the fashion ones!)

Hi Bonnie, that’s a really great travel tip! Thank you for sharing it 🙂

Pat Coppock

I love all the TFG articles and they are helping me plan my 1 month European adventure in June. My plan is to take a capsule wardrobe and only a carry on! (Thanks for all the help-it’s coming together quite well). My favorite travel tip is to utilize the clothes you have; don’t overthink it and go with your gut!

Hi Pat, thank you so much for your feedback, glad you like the articles! That’s a great travel tip 🙂

R. Drozdowski

Always take along a zipplock type plastic bag for your bathing suit. Can pack bathing suit when damp.

Hi, that’s a great suggestion, thank you for sharing it 🙂

Thelma c Cohen

Just love your life-style…So jealous!!

Hi Thelma, thank you so much for your comment! 🙂

Emma D'Arcy

Desperate for a new travel handbag! Have to admit, on my last few trips I’ve tried to go hands free and gone for a funky ‘bum-bag’ or money belt, but these look super cute!! I don’t travel an awful lot but I am addicted to this blog! The best tips I picked up were to pick a colour and go with it for my travel wardrobe… we applied this when we had 2 weeks glampling in the south of France last year and travelled hand luggage only! Amazing! I would never have thought this was possible! The tip that I would share with you all (that I don’t recall seeing) is possibly not necessarily space saving (!!!) but my husband and I NEVER travel without a pack of cards. Great entertainment and great for meeting new people.

Hi Emma, thank you so much for your comment! Thank you for taking the time to share your insight 🙂

I have the Travelon 3 compartment crossbody and love it. Also, their warranty is fantastic if you have trouble with your bag,

Ann Kan

Alex, thanks for the tips on travel bags!

Rachel

My number one travel tip is to blend in with the locals!

Hi Rachel, thank you for sharing your travel tip!

Meghan

I haven’t tried any of these, but I think I tend to be less cautious than most… I don’t live dangerously by any means, but also don’t take special precautions over and above what I do at home. In a busy city environment I have a tiny cross body that fits my phone, passport and cash that I wear over my clothes but under my coat; then carry a larger purse/backpack (I have a convertible one) over my coat with my day trip items and usually my make up (which I take everywhere LOL).

Hi Meghan, thank you for taking the time to share your insight!

Latanya Ivey

I love Travelon crossbody bags. They’re a definite for travel.

Hi Latanya, thank you so much for your comment! 🙂

Karen

Compartments are the key I find when travelling, from packing cubes to my Travelon toiletry bag to my day bag, I can always find whatever I need to get my hands on, and if it doesn’t have a home, I probably don’t need it anyway!

Hi Karen, that’s a great tip, thank you for taking the time to share it 🙂

Heather

Most of these are pretty cute for being anti-theft bags. I have been looking for a new purse just for going around town in. Times are getting harder and many people are desperate so maybe I will go this route.

I have taken self defense classes and that has given me more confidence. I believe that being aware of your surroundings is very important as well. It actually helped us to catch a thief that broke into our house. I am always paying close attention to people lurking about.

Hi Heather, thank you so much for taking the time to share your experiences 🙂

Karen Li

I have a PacSafe and Travelon that I use for different purposes. I’m still sometimes paranoid that I’ll lose the bag. My best travel tip: take out foam bra inserts from those sports bras and replace with a few well placed large bills. I’ve never had to dig into my emergency cash, but it’s always reassuring to know that it’s there if necessary.

Hi Karen, that’s a great idea, thank you for sharing it 🙂

Lisa Mathews

I just ordered the Signature 3 Compartment Crossbody, based on your reviews!! I’m excited to get it and see if it will be just what I’m looking for. My best travel tip is to read about where you’re going to familiarize yourself – it helps with packing appropriately, knowing the local customs, and just an overall sense of respect for the place you are visiting. I enjoy seeing the sites, but living like a local. Immersing yourself and just taking it all in is the perfect idea of a vacay for me!!

Hi Lisa, thank you so much for your feedback, glad you found the article useful! That’s a great travel tip 🙂

Jean Hilbelink

I like a neutral leather crossbody best.

Hi Jean, thank you for taking the time to share your insight!

Laura Williams

Number one tip: Carry a pack of tissues, travel hand sanitizer, and small change for some of the public restrooms. (or the packs that Alex showed on her recent video at the Travel Show.) I loved my slim pouch Travelon bag with the phone pocket. I carried it all through Italy, Croatia, Germany and Greece. Held more than I thought it would.

Can find it on eBags and Amazon.

Hi Laura, that’s a great travel tip, thank you for sharing it 🙂

Jennifer Sevy

Thanks for helping us travel in style!

Hi Jennifer, thank you so much for your feedback! 🙂

Deb Molnar

I love the variety that Travelon offers. My needs changes occasionally so it’s nice to find something new that meets my requirements!

Hi Deb, thank you for taking the time to share your insight! 🙂

Keisha

I try not to look like a tourist/American whilst traveling, clothing items I can mix and match, and bring a surge protector for charge multiple items with one converter.

Hi Keisha, that’s a great travel tip! Thank you for sharing it 🙂

Lori

As phones get smarter, and my travel experience grows, I find I really don’t need more than a wristlet most of the time. It’s lightweight and I grasp like a clutch while I’m walking but can let it dangle on my wrist for a moment if I need both hands. The amenity bags my husband gets on business class flight for work make great wristlets–ones from KLM look like leather, are generously sized (for a wristlet), unisex designs and have no logos on them.

Hi Lori, that’s a great tip! Thank you for sharing it 🙂

Amelia Smith

My top travel tip is: wardrobe capsules: packing clothes/accessories that play well together to maximize fashion while minimizing packing space.

Hi Amelia, thank you for sharing your travel tip! 🙂

Rosemary Thompson

I enjoy reading all your tips. Also, like the comment that travel bags/purses are not usually used for daily use after return home; additional style without a lot of cost would be appreciated.

Hi Rosemary, thank you so much for your feedback! 🙂

Luann M

Travelon has some very nice new styles- a lot more fashionable!

Hi Luann, thank you so much for your comment! 🙂

Jan Mullady

The Best Tip I can give for traveling is to remember you are not home and things are different with another culture. Smile and enjoy!

Hi Jan, that’s a great travel tip, thank you for sharing it! 🙂

Geraldine Halpin

My number one travel tip is when things go wrong don’t panic! Panic leads to feeling overwhelmed and making poor decisions – you’ll always remember that trip as a disaster. But if you stay calm you have a better chance of rescuing the situation and your holiday! Solid research and preparation for travel doesn’t hurt either 😉

Hi Geraldine, thank you for taking the time to share your insight! 🙂

Luann

I am super happy to see more choices in anti-theft purses for traveling woman. They turn out to be excellent even when just doing home based travels- especially like the easy way to stay organized with all my purse contents! My best travel tip is to have a small cash purse with compartments for change. This allows me to sort my coins according to size and value, rather than pull out all my bills and have them visible when all I need is some change.

Hi Luann, thank you so much for your comment. Thank you for sharing your travel tip! 🙂

Heather

I typically carry my HB Jetsetter crossbody style when traveling, but some of these travelon bags looks cute and may be worth a try!

Hi Heather, thank you so much for your comment! 🙂

dee hayes

Luggage Markers-Place initials on each handle with permanent marker or fabric paint. My favorite is luggage handle straps (I even place one on my backpack or purse matching my carry on). Lock with a zip tie! No one can go through your luggage in flight!

Hi Dee, thank you for sharing your great travel tip! 🙂

Paula Richman

I always make sure I don’t keep all of my money in the same place, just in case something were to happen.

Hi Paula, that’s a great tip, thanks for sharing 🙂

Chelsey Barrett

I agree with looking up scams. Researching before you travel is super important.

Hi Chelsey, thank you so much for sharing your travel tip! 🙂

Claire

I love Travelon! I am going to be doing a lot of travel for work this year so need to get my travel gear sorted!

Hi Claire, thank you so much for your comment! 🙂

Tanya Baer

When I travel, I try to remember to have fun! I spend the days leading up to the trip planning, and that way I can just relax while on my trip!

Hi Tanya, that’s a great travel tip, thanks for sharing! 🙂

Cathy

I wished I had had the Travelon cross body purse on my recent trip to Ireland ( yes I was snowed in in Dublin). The bag I used was too small!

Hi Cathy, thank you so much for your comment! 🙂

Micheline

I would say my op tip is the less stuff you have to worry about, the more enjoyable your trip will be. With very few exceptions, I travel carryon only no matter the length of the trip.

Hi Micheline, thank you so much for sharing your insight! 🙂

Christine

No. 1 travel tip would be rolling clothes! I know it’s a “oldie”, but so true & such a space saver.

Hi Christine, that’s a great tip, thanks for sharing! 🙂

Lizzie

To be really hands free I sometimes wear a flip belt that I bought for running. It is soft spandex/nylon and is comfortable around my waist or upper hips, depending on what I am wearing. It has pockets stay closed, one with a zipper. Easily fits money, keys, chapstick

Hi Lizzie, thank you for sharing your great travel tip! 🙂

Diane Alderson

My #1 tip is… always have snacks!

Hi Diane, that’s a great idea, thanks for sharing 🙂

Mumbojumbo

My best tip is to wear a Sprigs wrist wallet. It holds money, license and credit card right on my wrist. I have had people ask me about my wrist thinking that I’m wearing a splint!

Hi, thank you for sharing your travel tip! 🙂

Tricia H

For travel I like a bag big enough to hold all my “stuff” and possibly even a water bottle, but also one that is secure. A lady traveling or just going around town just can’t take safety with a grain of salt.

Hi Tricia, thank you for taking the time to share your insight! 🙂

Courtney A

I love that these bags are stylish and functional. Such great features..

Hi Courtney, thank you so much for your feedback! 🙂

Michelle

Love this blog and this post. I will be checking out those crossbody purses for my upcoming trip to Italy. My one tip on travel is always keep your purse close to your body and never leave it unattained.

Hi Michelle, thank you so much for your comment! That’s a great tip, thanks for sharing 🙂

Linda McCann

Peace of mind is priceless. I remember being so shocked in Paris 4 years ago at all the warnings on subway cars about theft. I expected it in 3rd world countries but not somewhere sophisticated like Paris. How naive I was. Thanks for a great article. Time to upgrade my purse.

Hi Linda, thank you so much for sharing your experiences 🙂

Anel Muterspaugh

Carry baby wipes! Possibilities are endless!

Hi Anel, thank you for taking the time to share your travel tip!

Catherine Tuckwell

Ooh, I like the purple TravelOn!

Hi Catherine, thank you so much for your comment!

Noreen

I always turn the outside zip pocket on my bag next to my body to make it more secure.

Hi Noreen, that’s a great travel tip, thanks for sharing it 🙂

Carry baby wipes! The possibilities are endless!!

Hi Anel, that’s a great tip, thanks for sharing it 🙂

Valeria

These are all incredibly good tips. Security is one of the most important issues for me when traveling, so I have to admit I loved these bags. I definitely need one. One tip I haven’t seen here is to make copies of all your relevant documents (like passport, visa, etc.). If worst case scenario you have your stuff stolen, you’ll have copies that will help you get back on your feet.

Hi Valeria, thank you so much for your comment! Thank you for sharing your great travel tip 🙂

c Jennings

Absolutely the best site. I visit it often to get the best travel news and tips. Thanks so much

Hi, thank you so much for your feedback, so glad that you like the site! 🙂

Susana B.

I always wear a money belt with some extra cash, and leave my passport and at least one credit card in the safe at the hotel (or locked in my luggage). I also avoid backpacks, they’re very comfortable but in some places they scream ‘tourist’.

Hi Susana, thank you so much for taking the time to share your insight 🙂

Robin Parks

This appears to be a gr eat new addition to many items thst ate now protecting many when they travel. Whether you travel alone as a female, i always share all if these “best-kept secrets” with everyone i know. Thanks!!

Hi Robin, thank you so much for your comment! 🙂

Amy

My husband and I are just starting to really travel!! So excited and I have learned so much from all of you. It seems the best travel tip is Planning!! Looking forward to traveling and learning all the secrets and helpful tips 🙂

Hi Amy, thank you so much for your feedback! 🙂

Alyssa

Wear comfortable shoes, and don’t over pack!

Hi Alyssa, thank you so much for sharing your great travel tip! 🙂

Angela Janik

My best travel tip is packing cubes. They are the best way to pack!!!

Hi Angela, that’s a great travel tip, thanks for sharing 🙂

Kim

My number one travel tip is if your traveling abroad and flying out at night, try to get to sleep on the plane ASAP., even if you skip the meal they are offering. That way you get all of your sleep hours in and get to your destination feeling good! Staying up makes you exhausted at the new location. Works for me!

Hi Kim, thank you for sharing your great travel tip! 🙂

Cynthia Pelkowski

I own the Travelon Heritage small crossbody in grey and it is great. It’s become my everyday bag at home. Perfect size for me and so cute it doesn’t look like a security bag. I’m considering the Heritage backpack as a personal item for flying.

Hi Cynthia, thank you so much for your comment! 🙂

Cheryl

I love my slim crossbody bag. Used it all over Italy and take it to crowded places like museums at home. Going on a cruise with 5 friends in April and all of us will have Travelon bags with us.

Hi Cheryl, thank you so much for your feedback 🙂

Karen Snow

My travel tip:

On the trip abroad wear a set of clothes ready to be disposed: tired cami, leggings, t-shirt. Good for the long trip, perhaps sleeping in, then discard. Saves room in luggage for a few new acquisitions!!!

Hi Karen, thank you for taking the time to share your great travel tip!

Addison Berry

I always carry a regular cross body but have my hand over the zipper at all times or cover it with a scarc in the fall/winter 🙂 works great!

Hi Addison, thank you for your great travel tip 🙂

Sabrina Sandfuchs

I just Love the Design of the Travelon Bags. They are just amazing and I would love to have One for my next trips. During Travel I always love to take my camera to take lots Photos. My best travel Tip is to believe in your own gut and listen to what you feel or what you tell yourself and not what others want you to feel because they are Scared.

Hi Sabrina, thank you so much for your comment! That’s a great tip, thanks for sharing it 🙂

Marie

Thank you for the giveaway!

Hi Marie, thank you so much for your comment! 🙂

My #1 travel tip is to wear your heaviest clothing on the plane. Boots, jeans, heavy coat, etc… Since planes tend to be colder as well, you can layer and wear multiple clothing items, leaving you more space in your bag!

Hi Michelle, thank you for taking the time to share your insight! 🙂

Joann Sordellini

I have always found a crossbody bag to be the best travel bag. I even like to use one when I go shopping or sightseeing around town.

My one travel tip is that I always carry a small journal with me that contains all the pertinent information for my trip. This way should I lose my phone or run out of power, I still have the info I need!

Hi Joann, thank you for your comment! That’s a great tip, thanks for sharing it 🙂

Crystal

Thanks for this article. Haven’t done any traveling yet since I’m a single mom of 2 still in school but looking forward to gathering my “supplies” and getting prepared. Now to decide on which bag to purchase! 🙂

Hi Crystal, thank you so much for your feedback! 🙂

Jeanie

I loved traveling with my Travelon bag! When I returned, I threw it in the wash and it’s now ready for another adventure.

Hi Jeanie, thank you so much for your comment! 🙂

carole-lee wirshborn

I have had the Travelon x-body for several years. It holds up after stuffing. The interlocking zippers are a big plus.

Best travel tip: ( Other than packing your emotional support husband to do the heavy lifting 🙂 )Is to use snack size baggies as currency wallets. Euros, GBP, Swedish & Danish Kroner fit perfectly. If doing a multi country trip its a good way to keep organized and not to carry everything with you.

Hi Carole, thanks for your comment! That’s a great travel tip, thanks for sharing 🙂

Theresa

My sister and I are planning a trip to Europe so this article is perfect I’ve been trying to find a good purse for myself. (My sister hates purses and refuses to carry one) so I needed one a little bigger for both of our daytime stuff. This is the perfect starting point for me.

Hi Theresa, thank you so much for your feedback! 🙂

Robin Hillyer Miles

My favorite tip for the budget minded traveler is to rent a villa with a kitchen, make a menu for your trip (including some dining out), and a grocery list. This way you won’t be wondering what to eat during your holiday as you’ll have a plan with minimal leftovers!

Hi Robin, thank you for taking the time to share your travel tip! 🙂

Carol Jaskulka

My best trip is always the next one scheduled. At this point it is a tour of the Baltic Capitals of Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Russia in May.

Oops, you asked for my best tip, not trip, LOL! Best tip is Global Entry for returning back to the states.

Who knows, maybe I will win the giveaway? First time for everything!

Thanks for all the fun tips!

Hi Carol, thank you so much for your comment! Thanks for sharing your tip 🙂

Jennifer Villarreal

My tip would be to travel with less. Just the essentials even when using a bag. Less to have stolen.

Hi Jennifer, thank you for taking the time to share your great travel tip! 🙂

Jennifer

Love my PacSafe bags! Bought our first one for our first trip to Europe (2007) and it still looks brand new and we’ve never had any issues with theft!

Hi Jennifer, thank you so much for your comment! 🙂

Ashley Senesac

I love that the Travelon Heritage cross body bag looks very unisex. I can’t decide if I want to by it for myself or my partner!

Hi Ashley, thank you so much for your feedback! 🙂

Molly

Not a bag, but my favorite travel gadget is a steripen – it works fantastically on tap water that might not be great otherwise.

Hi Molly, thank you for taking the time to share your travel tip! 🙂

Marsha McLean

I’ve been carrying the Pacsafe for years, paired with the Pacsafe travel wallet. The wallet has anti-scan, and velcro and zippers (multiple subtle pockets mean I can hide most of my cash), and it clips to a loop in my Pacsafe bag. The stuff I use frequently (phone, wallet) go in one section while super important items (passport, tickets) go in a separate, locked by zipper clip, section. The bag is worn cross body (as I always carry my bags) with my arm resting on it and a hand grasping the strap. I saw women in Venice (which is rife with pickpockets) wandering with their huge tote purses hanging open, wallets plainly visible.

Susan

I agree with your comments regarding Pac-safe products. I have the purse and the wallet, as well as the passport wallet. I love the fact that I can chain them into the bottom of the pac-safe purse as well! I’ve travelled extensively with mine to many countries, and I always feel so much safer. The hardware is undestructable.

Mary

I was wondering what your suggestion would be for carrying your DSLR camera. Should I have 2 bags? I’m thinking I would like to carry it and a purse in one and as a crossbody.

Jill

AAA sells purses ans backpacks at member rates (about $10 cheaper than online) Go with black and it’s simple enough to blend with a cute outfit. Or jazz it up with a broach or embellishment. Simple is easy and classic and in this instance safest.

alex

Good tip Jill thanks!

Edna

I have a casual soft denim vest with many pockets out and inside. I love wearing it when I don’t want to carry a purse(movies, store, shopping, etc.) Except for carrying clothes, it would be perfect for travel.

Good idea Edna!

Lizette

Hello Travelon and Pacsafe, could you please design some better looking, more interesting bags? I love the security that I feel when I use your bags but I absolutely never use them when not traveling. They really could use a boost in looks. Thanks.

Don’t worry Lizette, we’re working on that 😉

Janet

In addition to bags a travel bra is also great for keeping valuables out of sight, and reach of pick pockets. The Brave Betty travel bra can even hold a passport in the back.

Good tip Janet, thanks!

Sarah

I’ve got the travel on “essentials” bag and I love it. It’s small enough that it isn’t super bulky, but I can fit everything I need in there. Plus the top opening is smaller than the bottom of the bag, so it’s hard for someone to reach down into the bag without me knowing. AND it locks to my chair and has locking zippers 😉

Awesome feedback, thanks Sarah!

Howey Linda

The bags looks great, where can i get some of those. I will like to list them on my website.

Hi Linda, you can click on the links below the images and they’ll take you to each of the bags. Thanks!

Ellie

I ordered mine from either Travelsmith.com or Magellan.com, I don’t remember which, sorry.

i like the design of the backpack. it is something people should adopt especially when they are travelling to a new area or strange places.

Me too, thanks!

Ron Bamberg

Thanks for the info on these bags and ways to stay safe….my personal comments/tips: 1) I never, ever, carry a bag out when I will be in crowded public areas—I put my id, day cash, lip crème/mirror in an inside pocket of blouse/jacket or secure pants pocket. Sling a water bottle & umbrella if necessary…and go. You find out quickly what is vital……only carry those items in all possible situations. If I feel safer or absolutely have to carry a bag out–I make sure first that it is as small as possible and a cross-body style….that I can wear UNDER a light blouse, jacket, coat re weather conditions. These tactics keep me safer and prevent me from losing stuff….which I am prone to do if I carry too much!! There’s a sad story about Rx sunglasses and a sheep in Ireland!!

alex

Thanks for the tips! Sounds like you have a great system!

Sadie

Thank you for introducing the brands, but other than appreciating the shapes and color, you don’t mention what makes then anti theft – rfid blockers? Chain enforced strapes? Merely that they are cross body? I would have appreciated a summary of how these excelled to encourage and reinforce what I need to look for in a travel bag.

Hi Sadie, thanks for asking! Many of the bags have security features, either rfid blockers, locks for zippers, or have designs that naturally help to prevent theft. Hope this helps!

I have a PacSafe cross body bag. It’s not the most fashionable but I do like it. Locking zippers, wires in strap to prevent slash ‘n grab thieves ,Rfid internal picket, external pocket for water bottle too. I chose this style for the safety features but also, I can put my 35mm DSLR camera inside the bag and not look completely like a tourist at times.

Thanks for the feedback Ellie!

Aniket Anand

Love the designs and colours of all above Travel bags.

Travel Fashion Girl

Glad you like them 🙂

dendys

Im happy that I ran across this when I did.

Lea

I love the look of the Timbuk2 Harriet Shoulder Bag! Do you know where I can purchase it? What features make it anti-theft? I can’t seem to find much about it when I search.

I found them on Amazon not sure if they still make it…

P

These are great! I also love the bag in the picture – do you know which it is?

Thanks! I’m afraid the bag in the pic is just a stock image…sorry about that!

Ann G

I was on the search for an anti-theft bag recently that wasn’t ugly and wasn’t too big. I was set on one of the ones shown here, but when I arrived at a local luggage shop, I found the Travelon Anti-Theft Signature E/W Shoulder Bag in black. It is the perfect size so that I didn’t feel weighed down or look too touristy, and because it has various zippered compartments and decent depth, I was able to also use it for as a camara bag for my compact-system camera with extra lens. It’s a good price at around $40 and comes in different colors ebags.com/product/travelon/anti-theft-signature-ew-shoulder-bag/276982

This purse sounds great! Thanks for the tip!

TJ

I have the Pacsafe City Safe 100 GII and although its not attractive like the previous comment its a great purse and holds a lot. I also use the DayMakers Convertible Backpack — they have a few different sizes, but its great as the zippers connect and there are lots of zippered pockets and the straps are adjustable to wear over one shoulder or wear as regular backpack.

Thanks for your feedback!

Lorena

I think the best trick is not to look like a tourist

Cali

Thanks for this post Alex!

I usually use a day pack or cross body leather purse but its good to see other options. Some of the reviews on amazon mentioned that the pac safe bags started falling apart after some extended use. Have any of your other readers mentioned this?

So far, I think that I will get the Timbuktu messenger bag. There’s only 6 reviews on Amazon so its relatively new and early to judge the durability. I LOVE the fact that it has velcro straps to attach to bike handlebars—I’m a cyclists and make full use of city bike share systems at home and abroad.

Hi Cali, I also prefer to use a leather or faux leather cross body bag on my travels. The items listed includes a round up of the best sellers readers have purchased the past year. Yes the Timbuktu bag is very functional for cyclists. Always great if you can find a bag you love for home AND travel 🙂

Izy Berry

I have that PacSafe bag! It’s pretty good. I thought it was a bit ugly when I bought it but it fits my laptop and I love the safety features.

Nvidia has overtaken Apple to become the world's second most valuable public company.

The AI microchip maker's share price has risen to be worth more than $3trn (£2.34trn) for the first time.

Only Microsoft is a more valuable company listed on a stock exchange, while Apple has fallen into third place.

Nvidia shares rose 5% after a year of growth - with one share now costing $1,224.40 (£957).

Nvidia's chips are powering much of the rush into AI, which has seen it become a poster child of the AI boom.

Demand for its processors from the likes of Google, Microsoft and Facebook owner Meta have been outstripping supply.

Nvidia's shares - up nearly 150% so far this year - are also being boosted by an upcoming move to split its stock by 10-to-one on Friday.

Ian Coatsworth, investment analyst at AJ Bell, said the stock split will "bring its share price down and make it more affordable to investors".

Tech companies - including Microsoft and Apple - have been racing to develop AI and embed it in their products.

Nvidia is a younger company than some of its peers, having been founded in 1993. Similar to many tech giants, it was founded in California in the US.

Britain is less likely to lose power this winter than it was last year, according to the company that runs the grid.

National Grid's Electricity System Operator (ESO) said it expects power plants, wind farms and other generation methods to be able to provide more than enough power to meet demand this time around.

In an early outlook, it said the grid would have an average margin - the difference between supply of electricity and demand for it - of 5.6 gigawatts (GW) this coming winter.

This means the period when demand might outstrip supply is just 0.1 hours.

The increased margins are in part because of improved capacity, thanks to a new 765km high-voltage cable that connects the UK's electricity network with Denmark.

The cable, called an interconnector, is known as the Viking Link, and started transporting wind power between the two countries in December.

New gas generation, growth in battery storage capacity and increased generation connected to the distribution networks have also contributed to the higher margins.

Despite this, ESO's chief operating officer Kayte O'Neill has said it will still need to be "vigilant" due to uncertainties around global energy markets.

"As a prudent system operator we remain vigilant, continuing to monitor potential risks and working closely with our partners to establish any actions necessary to build resilience," she said.

The continent's energy system has been forced to reinvent itself in recent years, faced with potential gas shortages due to the war in Ukraine.

The 20 countries using the euro currency have seen interest rates cut from record highs following progress in the battle against inflation over the past two-and-a-half years.

The Frankfurt-based European Central Bank (ECB) said it was "appropriate" to trim its main deposit rate from 4% to 3.75%.

It followed an assertion last month by its president, Christine Lagarde, that the pace of price increases was now "under control".

But the Bank declared in a statement that the battle was not won - signalling data-driven caution on future policy decisions in the months ahead.

Its staff even revised upwards their forecasts for inflation this year and next.

As we have been discussing in Money this week, the cut before the US and UK could weaken the euro - potentially making Britons' holiday money go further.

McVitie's is selling a new flavour of Jaffa Cake - and it marks the first ever non-fruit flavour since the treat launched in 1927.

Shelves across the country will soon be stocked cola bottle flavoured cakes.

The new flavour will launch in Asda stores from 10 June and be available in other UK supermarkets - including Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Iceland and Co-op - in the coming weeks.

Adam Woolf, marketing director at McVitie's, said: "Jaffa Cakes Cola Bottle is certainly one of our more unexpected product launches – stepping away from fruit flavours for the very first time.

"Jaffa Cakes have always stood out from the crowd (and the biscuit aisle), but we really wanted to try something new with this one. It's no doubt going to cause some debate among our Jaffanatics, and we can't wait to hear what they think."

By  Sarah Taaffe-Maguire , business reporter

Are we entering an era of interest rate cuts? Probably not. Or at least, not yet.

But the European Central Bank (ECB) which controls the euro currency does look set to make their first cut in four years this afternoon.

And Canada yesterday became the first country in the club of G7 industrialised nations to bring down borrowing costs by lowering their benchmark interest rate.

The UK, however, isn't currently expected by markets to make a cut until September.

Elsewhere, oil prices remain below $80 but are slightly more expensive than earlier this week. A barrel of the benchmark Brent crude oil costs $79.10.

The good news for people going on holidays to countries using the euro continues - the pound is still doing well against the currency with £1 equal to €1.1757.

That could go even higher after the ECB decision at 1.15pm. A pound also can buy $1.2783.

Like in the US, the UK's most valuable companies have become more valuable as the FTSE (Financial Times Stock Exchange) 100 and 250 indices are up 0.33% and 0.41% respectively.

Every Thursday  Savings Champion founder Anna Bowes  gives an insight into the savings market and how to make the most of your money...

Can you believe we are almost halfway through 2024?

Although the rate rises that we have seen this year have slowed compared with the previous couple of years, and we have even seen some falls, savers are now able to find hundreds of savings accounts that pay an interest rate higher than inflation.

The latest data from the Office for National Statistics showed inflation was still higher than predicted, however - which means the anticipated base rate cut is likely to be pushed back again – into the second half of this year.

While bad news for borrowers, this is great news for savers.

Incredibly, the latest statistics from the Bank of England show there is over £253bn sitting in current accounts and savings accounts earning no interest at all.

With top rates available paying 5% or even a bit more, that is potentially £12.65bn of gross interest that is not being claimed by savers.

So now really is the time to move your money if you have cash languishing, earning less than inflation, especially if you can lock some away with a fixed rate, as a base rate cut will happen at some stage, we just don't know when.

Easy access

If you think you'll need access to your money, an easy access account is a wise choice.

The base rate cuts that we have been waiting for are yet to start, so the top rates on offer are still paying almost as much as they were at the beginning of the year.

Fixed-term bonds

There is a strange phenomenon with fixed-term bond rates at the moment: the longer you tie up your cash, the lower the interest rates on offer.

Normally, you'd expect to be rewarded for tying up your cash over the longer term - but base rate forecasts have flipped this.

Fixed-term cash ISAs

A frequent complaint that I hear from savers is that the tax-free rates on ISAs are usually lower than the pre-tax rates on the equivalent non-ISA accounts – and this is particularly true with fixed-term accounts.

As many more savers are paying tax on their interest once again, cash ISAs are more popular than ever, as the tax-free rate of the ISA can still be considerably more than the interest earned after tax has been deducted on the non-ISA bond equivalents.

The renowned "50 Best" list of the world's best restaurants was revealed in Las Vegas last night - with a new restaurant taking top spot.

Disfrutar in Barcelona took the crown from Central in Lima, Peru (previous winners are ineligible and instead join a Best of the Best list).

Eating the standard menu costs £247 (€290) - with an extra £136 (€160) if you want the wine pairing.

To be fair, you do get around 30 courses.

They also offer a unique menu for your table for between €1,050 and €390 per person - the more people, the less it costs.

The 50 Best list says: "The combination of brilliantly imaginative dishes, unsurpassed technical mastery and playful presentation results in the dining experience of a lifetime, as full of surprises as it is memories."

Dishes include:

  • Caviar-filled Panchino doughnut
  • Frozen gazpacho sandwich
  • Thai-style cuttlefish with coconut multi-spherical
  • Squab with kombu spaghetti, almond and grape

Two UK restaurants made the top 50 but the UK was eclipsed by countries from across South America as well as Thailand, Italy, France and Spain.

London's Kol moved up slightly to 17, while Ikoyi, which we reported on a few weeks ago following a link-up with Uber Eats, came it at 42.

Three whiskies created by Aldi have been named among the best in the world.

The budget supermarket took home three golds at the International Spirits Challenge awards for:

  • Glen Marnoch Highland Single Scotch Whisky (£18.49, 70cl)
  • Highland Earl Blended Scotch Whisky (£16.89, 1L)
  • Samuel Joe’s Straight Kentucky Bourbon (£14.99, 70cl)

In the single malt category, Aldi's submission beat the likes of M&S as well as premium brand Lochlea Distillery, which costs around £45 a bottle.

Other gold winners included Johnnie Walker, Jameson and Glenfiddich.

Aldi was also given three silver medals for its Highland Black Blended Scotch Whisky, Glen Marnoch Speyside Single Malt Whisky and Glen Marnoch Islay Single Malt Whisky.

"This industry recognition helps to prove that great quality doesn't have to come with a luxury price tag and customers can be confident they're saving money with us, whilst getting the best whisky taste and experience," said Julie Ashfield, managing director of buying at Aldi UK.

As we've previously discussed in the Money blog, holidaying Brits can avoid costly roaming charges by using their own travel eSim - and there's now another mainstream option to choose from courtesy of Uswitch.

UK travellers who want to use their phones abroad usually rely on their roaming plans and data passes or sign up for a local SIM at their destination, which can often require time-consuming ID checks and additional documentation.

That can be costly.

Since Brexit, the UK no longer benefits from several EU-mandated rules, including a worldwide data roaming cap of £45.

Roaming costs, especially in countries outside the EU, can now be as high as £9 for every 1MB of roaming data - equivalent to streaming Netflix for 14.4 seconds.

The savings with eSims are potentially massive, as our cost of living specialist Megan Harwood-Baynes outlined here last month...

USwitch product

Using 10GB of data in Morocco on a UK Pay As You Go network with uncapped fees would cost on average of £56,166, compared to just £17 with a USwitch eSim.

eSims are available online and are entirely digital - meaning customers don't need to visit a phone network store or wait for a physical SIM card to arrive in the post.

Most new smartphones are already compatible with eSim technology, including every iPhone released from 2018 onwards and most Samsung devices released from 2020 onwards.

"eSIMs offer them a newfound freedom that's cheaper than traditional data roaming and with none of the hassle of finding a local SIM card provider when you arrive," said CEO and co-founder of (USwitch's partner in this project) eSIM Go Zacchary Couldrick.

Asda has gone from selling the cheapest petrol out of the supermarket chains to now costing the most, according to the latest fuel price figures.

RAC says Asda's big rivals, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Tesco, all sold a litre of unleaded petrol for 2.1p less on average at the end of May.

Diesel was also coming out costlier at Asda, with the supermarket 2.5p per litre more expensive than the rest of its supermarket competition.

Drivers are being urged - by the RAC - to change their refuelling habits to find the best prices.

What makes up the cost of a litre of petrol?

The price you pay for fuel at the pumps is governed by wholesale fuel prices, which are affected by several factors.

These include the global price of crude oil, which itself is governed by supply and demand and oil refinery production and capacity.

Distribution costs, fuel duty (currently 52.95p a litre in the UK), VAT (currently at 20%) and profit margins dictated by fuel retailers all come into account when working out why prices of fuel rise and fall.

Fuel duty rate and VAT largely stay the same, though oil prices and the strength of the pound to the US dollar (refined fuel is sold in dollars per metric tonne) can cause prices to be extremely volatile.

How have UK petrol prices changed in the 21st century

Unleaded fuel in 2000 had an average cost of 80.35p, while the average cost of diesel in the same year was 81.73p.

The lowest average cost for unleaded petrol in the last 24 years came in 2002, where the average was 73.5p. Diesel also had its cheapest average cost in this year at 75.6p.

Unsurprisingly, the most expensive average prices for fuel have fallen in recent years. In 2022, the average cost of unleaded fuel was 165.06p and the average cost of diesel was 178.13p.

Trump Has Been Convicted. Here’s What Happens Next.

Donald J. Trump has promised to appeal, but he may face limits on his ability to travel and to vote as he campaigns for the White House.

  • Share full article

Donald J. Trump in a dark suit, red tie and white shirt.

By Jesse McKinley and Maggie Astor

  • May 30, 2024

The conviction of former President Donald J. Trump on Thursday is just the latest step in his legal odyssey in New York’s court system. The judge, Juan M. Merchan, set Mr. Trump’s sentencing for July 11, at which point he could be sentenced to as much as four years behind bars, or to probation.

It won’t stop him from running for president, though: There is no legal prohibition on felons doing that . No constitutional provision would stop him even from serving as president from a prison cell, though in practice that would trigger a crisis that courts would almost certainly have to resolve.

His ability to vote — for himself, presumably — depends on whether he is sentenced to prison. Florida, where he is registered, requires felons convicted there to complete their full sentence, including parole or probation, before regaining voting rights. But when Floridians are convicted in another state, Florida defers to the laws of that state, and New York disenfranchises felons only while they are in prison.

The Trump Manhattan Criminal Verdict, Count By Count

Former President Donald J. Trump faced 34 felony charges of falsifying business records, related to the reimbursement of hush money paid to the porn star Stormy Daniels in order to cover up a sex scandal around the 2016 presidential election.

“Because Florida recognizes voting rights restoration in the state of conviction, and because New York’s law states that those with a felony conviction do not lose their right to vote unless they are incarcerated during the election, then Trump will not lose his right to vote in this case unless he is in prison on Election Day,” said Blair Bowie, a lawyer at the Campaign Legal Center, a nonprofit watchdog group.

Mr. Trump will almost certainly appeal his conviction, after months of criticizing the case and attacking the Manhattan district attorney, who brought it, and Justice Merchan, who presided over his trial.

Long before that appeal is heard, however, Mr. Trump will be enmeshed in the gears of the criminal justice system.

A pre-sentencing report makes recommendations based on the defendant’s criminal record — Mr. Trump had none before this case — as well as his personal history and the crime itself. The former president was found guilty of falsifying business records in relation to a $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels, a porn star who says she had a brief sexual tryst with Mr. Trump in 2006, in order to buy her silence.

At the pre-sentence interview, a psychologist or social worker working for the probation department may also talk to Mr. Trump, during which time the defendant can “try to make a good impression and explain why he or she deserves a lighter punishment,” according to the New York State Unified Court System.

The pre-sentencing report can also include submissions from the defense, and may describe whether “the defendant is in a counseling program or has a steady job.”

In Mr. Trump’s case, of course, he is applying — as it were — for a steady job as president of the United States, a campaign that may be complicated by his new status as a felon. Mr. Trump will likely be required to regularly report to a probation officer, and rules on travel could be imposed.

Mr. Trump was convicted of 34 Class E felonies, New York’s lowest level , each of which carry a potential penalty of up to four years in prison. Probation or home confinement are other possibilities that Justice Merchan can consider.

That said, Justice Merchan has indicated in the past that he takes white-collar crime seriously . If he did impose prison time, he would likely impose the punishment concurrently, meaning that Mr. Trump would serve time on each of the counts he was convicted of simultaneously.

If Mr. Trump were instead sentenced to probation, he could still be jailed if he were later found to have committed additional crimes. Mr. Trump, 77, currently faces three other criminal cases: two federal, dealing with his handling of classified documents and his efforts to overturn the 2020 election , and a state case in Georgia that concerns election interference.

Mr. Trump’s lawyers can file a notice of appeal after sentencing, scheduled for July 11 at 10 a.m. And the judge could stay any punishment during an appeal, something that could delay punishment beyond Election Day.

The proceedings will continue even if he wins: Because it’s a state case, not federal, Mr. Trump would have no power as president to pardon himself .

Our Coverage of the Trump Hush-Money Trial

Guilty Verdict : Donald Trump was convicted on all 34 counts  of falsifying records to cover up a sex scandal that threatened his bid for the White House in 2016, making him the first American president to be declared a felon .

What Happens Next: Trump’s sentencing hearing on July 11 will trigger a long and winding appeals process , though he has few ways to overturn the decision .

Reactions: Trump’s conviction reverberated quickly across the country  and around the world . Here’s what voters , New Yorkers , Republicans , Trump supporters  and President Biden  had to say.

The Presidential Race : The political fallout of Trump’s conviction is far from certain , but the verdict will test America’s traditions, legal institutions and ability to hold an election under historic partisan tension .

Making the Case: Over six weeks and the testimony of 20 witnesses, the Manhattan district attorney’s office wove a sprawling story  of election interference and falsified business records.

Legal Luck Runs Out: The four criminal cases that threatened Trump’s freedom had been stumbling along, pleasing his advisers. Then his good fortune expired .

  26. DYSHAYEN Chenille Letter Travel Duffle Bag Large PU Leather Weekender

The bag is well made with clean, even and studry stitching and hems. The handles are comfortable to carry (over the shoulder or by hand) and the zipper is strong and has great movement. This bag is quite spacious too, and really can fit a lot of stuff. My only issue is the material. While it's easy to clean, the PU leather is quite thin.
