Lake Street Drive are a band founded in 2004 hailing from Boston, Massachusetts. The quartet are known for their indie rock infused take on classic jazz, soul and swing music from the pre-rock era of music.

Lake Street Dive seem to have a band motto. Not a lot of bands do that because not a lot of bands should do that but in their case, it works. That’s because it’s a simple, yet precise description of the band and their music, it’s simply “two girls, two guys, and a whole lotta feelings”. It sums up the basic idea of the band pretty well, what it doesn’t cover is their delectable indie-soul sensibilities or the way they’ve built themselves up the most natural way that they could.

The four members began playing together in 2004, but the origins of the band begin a year later. Double bassist Bridget Kearney wrote a song that the band performed for the John Lennon Songwriting contest, and promptly won in the Jazz category. They won a cash prize and 1000 CD’s pressed, which led to them independently releasing their first album “In This Episode…” in 2006.

The band performed and recorded intermittently over the next four years, recording another album entitled “Promises, Promises” in the interim. They even signed to Signature Sounds Recordings in 2011, but it wasn’t until one year later that they decided to make a strong commitment to the band, and finally went on tour. When I say they toured, I mean it, we’re talking 150 shows in 2013 alone.

This was done in the midst of recording their 2014 album “Bad Self Portraits”. Along with a viral video of them covering The Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back” around a single microphone on a Boston street corner that’s got 2 million views on Youtube and counting, this looks set to take them to the next level. It’s already got the band slots performing on The Late Show with David Letterman, The Ellen DeGeneres Show and The Colbert Report and the only way seems to be up from there.

Lake Street Dive are truly unique, and richly deserving of any and every bit of attention that they can get. Highly recommended.

Live reviews

Tuesday 26th April. The Scala. Lake Street Dive. It’s me and the missus tonight at Kings Cross’ finest. It’s a great venue, nowhere too far from the stage with generally good sight lines although the two tallest people in the world came tonight and stood dead centre stage near the front.

Lake Street Dive are a Brooklyn based, Boston formed band that’s difficult to categorise. Its pop, rock, funk, soul, R n B, a bit of everything. They take to stage looking like a cross between the ‘Bash Street Kids’ and the ‘Kids from Fame.’ There’s the geeky one on guitar, the Vicky Pollardesque one on double bass, the cool guy with bandana on drums and the posh one in the middle with the pretty dress on vocals.

Touring in support of their new album ‘Side Pony’ which I have had a bit of trouble getting into after the excellent ‘Bad Self Portraits’ of a couple of years ago I am unsure what to expect tonight.

I needn’t have worried. Once they started and Racheal Price opens her mouth and that beautiful voice cascades into us we are rapt. It is a joy to behold, its Mariah, its Christina, its Ella and at the low end of the scale Bonnie Raitt. It has a raw soul blues feel that kicks you in the stomach, grabs your insides and never lets go.

She is ably supported both musically and vocally by Mike Olson, Bridget Kearney and Mike Calabrese who provide sublime harmonies throughout.

The new songs sound amazing and are really brought to life as well as some of my favourites from the back catalogue. There’s a great version of Lola half way through and the set closer ‘Rich Girl’ has the whole crowd singing and dancing long after they finish performing. Fantastic night of live music and the absolute contrast to the subdued atmosphere of Calexico the night before.

Keep on rockin y’all

One of the most enjoyable live performances I have seen to date...

LAKE STREET DIVE...@ Crossroads KC

09/04/17...the Passion is infectious the performance is classy, witty, sultry, and sensuous. The band exhibits a cutting edge of humility and heartache that capture the essence of the human relationship. Their persona exemplifies the importance of allowing oneself to feel and express joy amidst whatever circumstances surround you. Rachael Price's Voice is profound with soothing harmonies from her supporting cast. Bridget on the stand up Bass is superb. If you haven't seen them your doing your head and heart a disservice. The passion and presence of Rachael Price is immaculately beautiful and captivating. I encourage you to check them out live. They are performing some new songs on this tour and they were A breath of fresh air. I particularly liked "Good Kisser". A few of my standard favorites are "Bad Self Portrait", "Side Pony" and "What am I Doing Here"...Definately an act not to miss if they come to a venue near you and I would say worthy of a couple hour road trip as well.

Lake Street Dive played last night in Clearwater, FL at the Capital Theater. The opening act was Mikaela Davis and Southern Star. They were very good, better than expected from an opening act. She's a beautiful young lady with a beautiful voice, playing a beautiful harp.

Lake Street Dive played for about an hour and a half and they were outstanding, great, phenomenal, and any other accolades you can come up with. Rachel tore it up. Her vocals are unbelievable. Her moves are so sexy and cool.

Mike Calabrese, on drums, had outrageous solo towards the end that lasted at least 5 minutes. The new guy on keyboards, Akie Bermiss, also sang "Still the One", his version of the Shania Twain hit. It was amazing.

There is so much talent in this band, with a pretty good light show too. If you have the chance to see them, do not pass it up, you will be missing out on a great experience.

Our first time seeing Lake Street Dive perform was beyond memorable; it was unparalleled. Each member of the band is so very talented, yet it's the passionate, energetic and seamless collaboration among the members that make LSD such an amazing experience. I have never heard a singer quite like Rachael, ever. Mike's guitar and trumpet work is astounding, and Drummer Mike has no rival. Then there's Bridget. I'm a bassist and this woman is an absolute marvel, if not a deity. Couple the stunning musicianship, flawless arrangements and charming (I mean this with the utmost affection) stage presence with the brilliant harmonies and clever, innovative phrasing and, well, it was quite an evening. I must mention the sound and lighting crew, whose work was without flaw and enhanced an already-perfect show. We have a new favorite band! Rick R - no bass, no groove

Great show, great energy. My only exposure prior to this show was Youtube videos. I knew Rachel Price had a great voice, but WOW! She kept up the energy and great smiles throughout the show. Lake Street Dive is clearly a tight ensemble. The synergy between the musicians was palpable. Hard to believe such great music was being put out by only 4 people! The music was soulful and jazzy, and kept me moving all night. They were troopers, not even acknowledging the chilly breeze off the harbor. I'm not sure why they have only put out 2 albums in 10 years (bought both at the show), but I hope they make more. Will see them again if they come to town. Was a little disappointed that the last song of the night was a cover song. Great cover, but would have preferred to leave with an original ringing in my ears.

Fabulous, which I expect from this band. The foursome brought their high-octane energy and passion to the stage at the Britt Festival. Rachael Price was nothing short of spectacular with her soulful performances. Mike-squared on the guitar/trumpet and drums brought their A games and Bridget Kearney on the upright bass, inspired and energized the crowd the way she cherished every note. If you have never seen this band, make it a point of finding out where they are playing and by tickets. Thanks for a great show LSD.

Confidence. Talent. Tight. LSD delivered both an joyous and professional performance. Each member of the quartet delivered exceptional musical work; while the Ms Price controlled the stage with her voice, smile and moves.

Having the courage to allow "The Suffers," a 10-person group of exceptional excitement and sweep to open shows how unafraid LSD is.

Lake Street Dive doesn't fit genre categories, except "value for the time and money." You won't be disappointed in going to one of their concerts.

What can I say that would do justice to the performance last night or to Lake Street Drive as a band. They are ridiculously good at performing live and never fail to blow me away. The venue was awesome and only made their performance that much better. The power, the versatility, the funk factor is high with Lake Street Dive and I count myself fortunate to have been there to see/hear it.

So thank you Songkick for the getting us there. Definitely one for the permanent memory bank!

Saw LSD recently in Charlotte. And was a fan via CD’s and Pandora. But live in a venue with 2,000 + standing was another dimension of supreme enjoyment. Not fair to single out any one performance or accolade, but suffice to say these musicians are in a limited league of peers. If they accidentally appear in your ‘hood, do whatever is necessary to observe. It will restore your faith in raw (albeit studied) and exciting talent.

How was Lake Street Dive, you ask? AMAZING! That's how they were. Rachel, Mike, McDuck, & Bridgette are THE. LITERAL. S***! I'm so happy for all of the success they've had since I first started following them four years ago. They put on an amazing show. Every band member is ridiculously talented, and their friendship shines through on stage which makes the show even more fun! Also, Thalia Hall is a great fucking venue. That is all!

Lake Street Dive

As a band, Lake Street Dive epitomizes democracy in action: the group, expanded into a quintet since touring keyboardist Akie Bermiss officially joined in 2017, share writing and arrangement duties. Their personalities, skills, and wide-ranging taste in pop, rock, R&B, and jazz have long blended together to make an impressively cohesive sound, both sophisticated and playful, combining retro influences with contemporary attitude. On its most recent Nonesuch album, 2018's Free Yourself Up, the band even produced the record itself.

But after being on the road for nearly eighteen months since that album, the band members decided they could use some outside help. They had been writing, swapping demos, and rehearsing before and after soundchecks or in backstage green rooms and had amassed a wealth of new material, full songs, and sketches. With more than three dozen new songs and the desire to make a concise, vinyl-length album, they turned to Mike Elizondo, the producer-songwriter-multi- instrumentalist whom Lake Street Dive fans might remember as music director of Chris Thile's public radio series, Live From Here. The Grammy Award-winning Elizondo is perhaps best known as a songwriting collaborator of Dr. Dre, Eminem, and 50 Cent, but he has also served as a record producer for Fiona Apple, Mary J. Blige, Carrie Underwood, and 21 Pilots, among many others. He is as conversant in jazz as in rock, country, bluegrass, and hip hop -- exactly the sort of genre-juggling guy who would appreciate Lake Street Dive's own versatility.

Obviously is titled after the first word in the lyrics of opening track "Hypotheticals." And it is obvious from the start that the band has homed in on Elizondo's hip-hop record- making expertise, because, on this material, the grooves run especially deep. A sense of rhythmic fun drives just about every track, from up-tempo numbers like "Hush Money" to a bittersweet slow dance like "Anymore." The quintet fashions disarmingly cheerful arrangements guaranteed to keep the party going even as the subject matter takes a more serious turn on lead-off single, "Making Do," about a younger generation facing a life of diminished expectations, and "Being a Woman," a finger-snapping, bird-flipping treatise on gender inequality. "Nobody's Stopping You Now" is a letter of encouragement from lead vocalist Rachael Price to her teenaged self, co-written with bassist Bridget Kearney.

Though they still excel at songs like "Lackluster Lover," poking sly fun at a hapless Lothario, Lake Street Dive has also figured out how to write tunes that reflect this particularly turbulent chapter in our shared history. As Price puts it, "You're trying to express your anxieties, your feelings, your sadness, your happiness, all of these things -- your authentic state of being in a song. But you're also trying to create something people will listen to over and over again. That's the unique fun thing about music, putting these messages into three and a half minute snippets, dropping whatever truth we can and hoping it's the type of thing that people want to ruminate on."

With the permanent addition of Bermiss to the line-up, Lake Street Dive gained another singer and songwriter, as well as a keyboardist. Vocal harmonies have been a strong suit since the band's earliest days in Boston, when the original foursome became a YouTube sensation for its impromptu sidewalk singing. Here, with Elizondo's encouragement, the group vocals are among their most inventive. On "Same Old News," Price and Bermiss do a lighthearted and sexy Roberta Flack/Donny Hathaway-style duet. Album closer "Sarah" is performed a cappella, and it is as lush and emotive as an orchestrated piece.

"We had so much fun in the studio making Free Yourself Up," recounts Kearney. "But we've been a band for so long that we didn't want to just become a feedback loop of our own ideas. It felt like a really good time to bring another person like Mike [Elizondo], and he really opened us up. He encouraged us to make bolder arrangement choices, take those chances and try those things. The record really is a success in what we set out to do: continue to challenge ourselves, continue to grow, and do things we've never done before."

"Throughout our recording projects, our frame of reference has come from classic rock and '70s AM gold," explains McDuck. "But in terms of modern production aesthetics, no one is getting it right more than hip hop. There are a lot of great rock and roll records too, but there are aesthetic choices that we, as a rock band, always struggled with when it came time to mix. So, it was great to work with someone as musically omnivorous as Mike [Elizondo], who's had all that success and fluency in the hip hop world but can also hang when it came time to talk about double bass."

Prior to joining Elizondo at his suburban Nashville studio, Lake Street Dive had been on what would now be an unthinkably jam-packed schedule: concert dates, Brandi Carlile's "Girls Just Wanna Weekend" festival on the Caribbean coast of Mexico, and the annual Cayamo Cruise back east, a floating music festival with Jeff Tweedy, Mavis Staples, the Watkins Family Hour, and more. They managed to complete the recording -- and even an album-cover photo shoot -- before the pandemic lockdown. The studio, filled with an abundance of guitars, amps, keyboards, and synthesizers all prepped for their use, was an ideal, semi- secluded location for the band to build these tracks from the ground up.

"Playing it live all together as a start is never a bad idea," says drummer Mike Calabrese. "Even if we didn't keep anything but the high hat, everyone's in there getting a feel for the arrangement. But there were other songs that were constructed piece by piece. 'Sarah' was the first song we recorded because we had all the voices we needed. 'Feels Like the Last Time,' which starts with Akie beat boxing -- he beat boxed to his own demo of the song and Mike [Elizondo] was like, 'That's a good tempo, let's just use that.' We cut that up, flew it around, and pieced the song out and added layers to it bit by bit."

Bermiss had already integrated himself into Lake Street Dive as a live performer, touring with them for the last five years, but he has now revealed himself to be a songwriter able to get right into the band's groove. His beat-boxing skills were an inadvertent bonus. Kearney notes, "This was the first time we got to collaborate with Akie as a writer. He really brought a lot of stuff to the table. It's pretty remarkable that you can add somebody to a band after fourteen years and have this completely new writer who fits into the grand scheme."

Bermiss uses the word "organic" to describe how he came to work with Lake Street Dive, starting with an invitation to go on tour with them back in 2015, after the band had caught him performing a gig of his own. That led to his joining them on the Free Yourself Up sessions, and, finally, to a night in Chicago where, he recalls, "There was a formal 'engagement' situation. They took me to dinner and told me it was a band thing they like to do, and while I was distracted, they each put plastic engagement rings on my plate and asked if I would take their musical hands in band marriage."

Choosing an album title was organic as well. Price says, "Naming our albums has always been a painstaking process. Obviously is the first word in the song 'Hypotheticals' -- an undeniable dance track, a great way to say, 'We are back!' We went through a couple of title iterations, then one day we were like 'Obviously -- let's call the record Obviously.' It was -- in a word -- obviously the right one."

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Since forming in 2004, Lake Street Dive have matched their sophisticated musicianship with a fearless refusal to limit their sound. As shown on their most recent full-length album, 2021’s critically acclaimed Obviously , the Boston-bred band also possess a keen talent for combining sociopolitical commentary with immediately catchy pop gems. With their current lineup comprised of founding members Rachael Price (vocals), Bridget Kearney (bass), and Michael Calabrese (drums)—as well as keyboardist/vocalist Akie Bermiss and touring guitarist James Cornelison—Lake Street Dive continue to create joyously soulful rock & roll with equal parts ingenuity, intelligence, and irresistible abandon.

The Lemon Twigs

Following the release of Everything Harmony , which garnered acclaim from Questlove, Iggy Pop, Anthony Fantano, The Guardian, and countless others, The Lemon Twigs—the New York City rock band fronted by brothers Brian and Michael D’Addario—have once again captured the attention of the music listening public. They are in their premature “comeback” stage, and coming back this early has its benefits; the brothers have the energy of 24- and 26- year-olds, plus the experience and songwriting chops of seasoned musicians, having recorded their first album, Do Hollywood , nearly a decade ago at ages 15 and 17.

Set for release less than a year after their last album, A Dream Is All We Know is a joyous affair. As the title suggests, it’s less of a sober look at the darker side of life, and more a hopeful sojourn into the realm of dreams. The tone has shifted away from dreary melancholic ballads and moody power pop. Brian and Michael are revisiting their “1968” sound. This album feels closely related to Do Hollywood , but their songwriting and recording techniques have vastly improved over the course of five albums.

The brothers combine elements of the Merseybeat sound, the California Beach Boy harmony sound, and Bubblegum to create a unique collection of pop nuggets. (They say it’s part of a new “Merseybeach” movement, sure to catch on, though that fact remains to be seen.)

The sense of urgency imbued in lead single “My Golden Years” comes in part from the jangly 12-string guitars and driving drums, but also from the anxiety of a narrator who can feel their “golden years” slipping away from them. Michael’s line, “In time I hope that I can show all the world the love in my mind,” can serve as a statement of intent for the whole collection of songs, as the brothers race against time to create as much quality pop material as possible.

“They Don’t Know How To Fall In Place” propels the album forward into bubblegum paradise with its euphoric harmonies and biting clavinet, while the Roy Wood inspired “Church Bells” takes you on a journey in its two-minute and nine-second run time. At every turn you’re introduced to a new instrument, and as Michael sings “ring goes the bell,” the drummer switches to the bell of the ride cymbal and the song reveals itself as a pop tone poem, complete with cellos, mandolin and trumpets, all played by Brian. Not to mention the fun Mersey pun, using famous drummer Ringo’s name in a song that conflates images of the west side of Manhattan with the atmosphere of northern England. Next comes the titular “A Dream Is All I Know,” an existential space age epic, followed by the baroque pocket-prog of “Sweet Vibration.”

Equipped with the songwriting chops of a lost era (somewhere between The Brill Building and 10452 Bellagio Road) the new record was carefully arranged and produced entirely analog in the brothers’ Brooklyn recording studio. Most of the tracks were constructed with the two brothers swapping instruments and layering all the parts themselves. One of the exceptions to that rule was “In The Eyes Of The Girl,” co-produced by Sean Ono Lennon in his upstate New York studio, which had the brothers tracking drums and piano while Lennon handled bass duties. On top of that, the brothers add multilayered harmonies that bring to mind The Beach Boys, The Four Freshman, and The Free Design.

Side two’s opener “If You And I Are Not Wise,” has the brothers channeling the Everlys’ close harmonies while seeking spiritual illumination with the line, “I wish that someone could tell me what my soul knows that I don’t know.” Brother Brian says, “There’s definitely an escapist bend to this album. Joyous music can take you out of the world when things get too heavy, which everyone needs sometimes. ”

“How Can I Love Her More?” is a whirlwind of musical flights of fancy. Blaring horns and strings set the stage before the song settles into a rollicking shuffle, complete with two drum sets, an adventurous bass part, theremin, flutes and harpsichord. It’s a kitchen sink approach, full of left turns, but never bordering on cacophony. It segues directly into the peaceful, sparser “Ember Days,” propelled by a meditative nylon string pattern that’s part bossa nova, part Nick Drake. The peace doesn’t last long though, as “Peppermint Roses” erupts with a menacing Farfisa into a two-part nightmare comedy that doesn’t let up. The album unwinds with the dreamy “I Should’ve Known Right From The Start.” It’s like a forgotten piece of French Pop that just happens to be sung in English, complete with arpeggiated acoustic guitar, melodic bass and catchy drum hooks.

While the album is chock full of progressive pop ideas, it closes with an ode to early rock and roll on“Rock On (Over and Over).” “Rock On” contextualizes the band as part of a lineage of rock and roll that’s never really stopped. In every decade there have been bands that have put their own spin on the music and “push(ed) it on down to the line.” But none have done it with the attention to detail and raw talent of these brothers. For The Lemon Twigs, it took almost a decade for critics and audiences alike to present them with the major accolades they’ve earned this past year. While their initial records were appreciated for the musical proficiency they displayed, the brothers’ past few records have communicated their ideas with more clarity and emotional resonance. In other words, “It took too long to say ‘rock on.’”

Switzerland might look tiny on paper, but with most of its land gobbled up by the Alps, this little European nation packs in a lot of elevated space.

Wherever you go, you’re in for one hell of a drive: roads unfurl along the shores of great lakes and glaciers, mountain passes corkscrew up to fairy-tale medieval castles, and on the high roads, every glorious bend makes you want to screech to a halt and yodel in delight.

Neatly wrapping it all up is the big one – the 1,643km (1,021-mile) Grand Tour of Switzerland – an epic, efficiently signposted lap of the country that links 12 UNESCO World Heritage sites and shows off the Alpine nation from its most flattering angles.

Short on time? Don’t worry – here are seven alternative road trips in Switzerland to give you a head start.

A lone road through the Furka Pass wiggles through a valley that is hemmed in by giant, snow-capped mountains in Switzerland

1. Furka Pass

Best road trip for glaciers and mountain peaks Obergoms–Andermatt; 35km (22 miles)

The wows never leave your lips, and the Alps never leave your rear-view mirror on this astonishingly steep, snaking, stop-the-car-and-grab-the-camera drive from the remote valley of the Goms in Valais to mountain-encrusted Andermatt in Uri.

If you begin to feel rather Bond-like behind the wheel, it’s no coincidence: this road starred in the car chase scene in the 1964 movie Goldfinger and brings out the 007 in everyone.

Swerving precariously around switchbacks, it tops out at the 2,429m (7,969ft) Furka Pass, where you can peer across the lunar rockscape of a wind-battered plateau and park to see the deeply crevassed Rhône Glacier and its ice grotto before the long, sweeping descent to Andermatt.

Planning tip: Drive the Furka Pass west to east for full-on, hairpin-riddled drama and views of austere peaks and glaciers that will draw constant gasps. Open roughly from June to October, the best time to go is the summer, as the road closes when the snow arrives. Check conditions before heading out.

2. The Appenzell rural route

Best road trip for rural Switzerland Appenzell–St Moritz; 200km (124 miles)

Switzerland’s rural, folksy heart beats loudest in the Appenzell region, snuggling up to Liechtenstein in the country’s northeast. It’s a terrifically unsung region for a road trip, with rolling dairy country giving way to lavishly frescoed towns. A week? Doable. Two weeks? Now you’re talking…

The route passes Säntis mountain (at the summit of which you can see six countries), the seven wavy limestone peaks of the Churfirsten range and the pretty medieval hamlet of Werdenberg before crossing little-but-lovely Liechtenstein, with an essential stop-off at its castle-topped capital, Vaduz .

The mountains soar ever higher as you cruise south to vine-rimmed Maienfeld – the setting of the beloved Swiss children’s book Heidi – and the gorge-spanning Salginatobel Bridge, a feat of engineering described as a work of art.

Storybook Engadine villages with fountains and frescoed houses like Guarda and Zernez entice you into the nature-gone-wild Swiss National Park before your drive south to St Moritz , where sky-high peaks are ripe for Alpine adventures.

Planning tip: Factor in time to break from the wheel and stretch your legs with a properly wild hike in the Swiss National Park. The national park visitor centre in Zernez can hook you up with rangers.

Boats and lake side buildings in the small village of Gandria on Lake Lugano.

3. Southern Switzerland's peaks

Best road trip for mountain scenery Lugano–Zermatt; 264km (164 miles)

The Alps are your constant companion on this ravishing drive through the high mountains of southern Switzerland, which takes in both the Gotthard and Furka passes. You'll want to allow at least a week to do it justice.

Begin at the route’s end in lakeside Lugano , which shoulders up to Italy and delivers a shot of la dolce vita in its cafe-rimmed piazzas and palm-fringed parks. From here, the road cruises north to Locarno – another beauty with its botanical gardens and palazzo-filled Renaissance Old Town – and UNESCO World Heritage Bellinzona with its trio of hilltop medieval fortresses.

The language flicks from Italian to German as you power north into the Alps proper and Airolo at the foot of the Gotthard Pass. This drive is simply too good to rush, so factor in time for a break in Andermatt, where big wilderness, high-elevation hikes and sensational Alpine scenery await.

Just west of here, the heart-quickening, hairpin-bend-riddled Furka Pass leads you up and over into the glacier-encrusted mountains of Valais. The final stretch of the trip encompasses Bettmeralp, the epic Aletsch Glacier and Brig, with its whimsical Stockalper Palace, building to a crescendo in Zermatt , where the mighty Matterhorn holds you in its thrall.

Planning tip: This route is seasonal, with both the Furka and the Gotthard Passes closing over winter. Check the Alpine Passes website for details on opening dates and current snow and road conditions.

The Gotthard Pass weaves down a mountain in Switzerland, with many switchbacks

4. Gotthard Pass

Best road trip for gorges and canyons Andermatt–Airolo; 26.5km (16.5 miles)

Sure, you could take the tunnel (one of the world’s longest) through the St-Gotthard Massif, but where’s the fun in that?

If it’s Alpine highs you’re after, the old road over the 2,108m (6,196ft) Gotthard Pass enthralls. Buckle up, roll down the window and prepare for a feast of wild, lonely, bleakly beautiful mountain scenery on this serpentine road linking the Italian-speaking Swiss region of Ticino to the German-speaking region of Uri. If the curvy road seems a challenge today, just think of the poor souls that once made the arduous journey on foot and with pack animals.

In a former customs house at the top of the pass, the seasonal Museo Nazionale San Gottardo gives insight into the history and culture of the pass, but it’s the heart-quickening views you’ll remember most.

Even the Romans shied away from the Gotthard, and it wasn’t until the Devil’s Bridge was built in the 1300s that the pass became properly accessible. The bridge straddles the Schöllenen Gorge, where walls of sheer granite plunge to the raging Reuss River far below. On the south side of the Gotthard Pass, the cobblestone Tremola is a tour de force of 37 switchbacks that send you pinballing down to Airolo.

Planning tip: The road is weather-dependent – it's usually open from May to November.

5. Julier Pass

Best road trip for getting off the beaten track Chur–St Moritz; 157km (98 miles)

Scenery like this should come with a drumroll. Unfurling through the otherworldly gray, jagged, moraine-streaked Alps of Graubünden , the 2,284m (7,494ft) Julier Pass is the icing on the cake of a lovely, long, winding drive that connects the Alpine city of Chur to St Moritz in the Engadine Valley.

Little-trafficked and thrillingly wild, the pass has been used since Roman times, and remains of a Roman temple are still visible. The road dives deep into the heart of the Albula Alps, ticking off pristine mountain landscapes like Parc Ela , Switzerland’s biggest nature park, where you might be tempted to temporarily swap the open road for a hiking trail or two.

Unspooling like a ribbon, the Julier Pass frequently tops polls of Switzerland’s most beautiful drives, and for good reason: its remote, far-away-from-everywhere feel adds to its appeal tenfold.

Planning tip: While the drive is technically open year-round, take care with snow and ice. You’ll need winter tires and snow chains in the cold months.

Aerial view of Geneva Old Town from St. Pierre Cathedral with Mt. Saleve on background

6. Wheel through Western Switzerland

Best road trip for lakes and forests Geneva–Neuchâtel; 190km (118 miles)

The Alps get a lot of love, but sidling up to France in Switzerland’s not-so-wild west, the deliciously off-the-radar Jura region has its own quiet, unexpected beauty with lakes and vineyards rolling to châteaux and pine forest-cloaked hills.

Begin with a powerful hit of culture in worldly Geneva , reclining gracefully on the shores of its croissant-shaped lake. From here, the route tiptoes off the beaten track north into the Jura Vaudois Nature Park for hikes with lake views and tastings of Gruyère cheese at rural Alpine huts.

Devote at least a couple of days to the second half of the drive as you cruise north to serene Lac de Joux, with its watchmaking heritage, and Vallorbe, where Switzerland’s most astounding limestone caves reveal a wonderland of subterranean rivers, waterfalls and rock formations.

Near Lac de Neuchâtel, you’ll find the lushly rolling Val-de-Travers, birthplace of the “green fairy” (absinthe) and the great crescent-moon canyon of Creux du Van . The drive ends with a metaphorical bang at Neuchâtel , topped off by a turreted fantasy of a medieval castle.

Planning tip: The drive is part of the well-signposted and mapped Grand Tour of Switzerland . See the website for details on stages and route highlights.

A bridge spans the Aare River in Bern, Switzerland

7. Switzerland's top cities

Best road trip for nature amidst urban Switzerland Zürich–Bern; 315km (196 miles)

Bookended by Switzerland’s de facto capital Bern and the country's largest city Zürich (commonly mistaken for the capital), this sensationally varied road trip leaps joyously from the urban to the outdoors, winging you from culture-crammed cities to great abbeys, medieval castles, lakes and mountains of myth.

Bidding Zürich’s big-hitting museums and cool waterfront bars a reluctant adieu, the drive swings south along the shores of Lake Zürich with tantalizing views of the Alps on cloudless days. Stop off at ludicrously pretty towns, such as vine-ribbed, castle-topped Rapperswil, before heading south to Einsiedeln and its whopping Benedictine abbey.

Lucerne hits the cultural sweet spot with its perfect-looking Old Town and galleries. Detour to fjord-like, exquisitely turquoise Lake Uri for a taste of the country’s geographical and spiritual heartland. Squeeze in dairy tours and meadow strolls in mellow Emmental as you ease your way southwest to Bern, the city of Einstein, elegant arcades and wild swims in the Aare River.

Planning tip: Aim for at least a week behind the wheel – preferably more.
